ha ha we are perfect ,i was leaving work today and also chatted to a cousin  doreen she was saying barry has done a family tree very interesting as well .looks like livrpool only won 4 european cups lol

Barry has done a family tree and there's some good news and some bad news.   Nain Hughes' father was Edward Burton and he was a Welsh speaking Englishman and was born in Liverpool.
The good news is that he was an intelligent man  so we know that he must have been a Liverpool FC supporter.     $good$

Tweet from Badgers Tearooms @BadgersTearooms

Just heard a nasty rumour that yet another shop in Llandudno is due to be leased to a major coffee brand chain. Yes another cafe!!!! :-(

Is it the long heralded arrival of Starbucks?  ;)

Who knows? Where would it go I wonder, U. Mostyn St.? Whatever happens, these places generally do a good job of fitting their coffee shops. I find it rather rich that Badgers would complain, as they hardly covered themselves in glory a couple of years ago when they had that environmental health trouble, maybe they rested on their laurels a bit (if my memory serves me right)? Ultimately, it's all different horses for different courses. Younger people like going for a coffee in places like Starbucks, Costa and Nero because it's good quality and has a nice atmosphere. Some people (generally more mature) like going to take afternoon tea in Badgers, it wouldn't be my thing but there we go..Just like decades ago some people would go to coffee bars rather than places like Sumners.

If you think about it, in the 90s we had very poor provision of cafes and other such places. there was Badgers, the Coffee Centre (which I've never been to and doubt I would to be honest), the Milk Bar, Habit, Upstairs at Clare's, Fortes, Sandbach and that was about it (I know there were more but they're the main ones I recall). They were all pretty old-fashioned (but Forte's was always quite nice in my book) and a couple were very much 'pile 'em high and sell 'em cheap' type places. Today, refreshment provision, range and quality is much better.

It's good to have range and competition in my book and the fact that they all do reasonably well demonstrates that there is a market for different types of places catering to different customers.

Went to the Pen Y Bryn in Upper Colwyn Bay for lunch on Friday. Its always a very welcoming pub, I think, with such friendly staff. We sat in the side bit by a big open fire and watched the snow falling outside. Lunch was an open Steak sandwich, a decent sized portion and very filling for a 'light bite'. Recommended.

As it's my birthday, we we there today at lunchtime for the first time. It was very good, we don't eat out very often, but we were very impressed with everything!  D)

Just had 2 guests go home today who, before coming to us spent one night at the Kinmel Arms. They had spent over £80.00 on dinner, fair enough, if that's what you want, but breakfast was delivered the night before, to your room, into a fridge and a table set in your bedroom. Obviously a continental type and ( Note you people with coffee fetishes )a coffee machine. Cornflakes with lump sugar to put on them !!! Ah well !

I see Mr M Cooney is applying for a license on 129 mostyn street the old Gimberts Shop as if there weren't enough bars in the area. Cant quite understand why as he has a bar further up the street.

Rumours are rife regarding china cave becoming Costa coffee. How much coffee can we drink

And another rumour is that Yates bars are moving into the tudno Castle hotel

Has China Cave closed down? I hadn't noticed. It would be better I think if they took over the old Moss Chemists across the road. It's a better location I think, with space to sit outside too, which China Cave doesn't have.

I am not sure what sort of place Gimberts would be if it became a pub. I would prefer somewhere like Speakers Corner was in Colwyn Bay, a bit more arty and interesting with a continental/real ale beer selection rather than a sports bar or an Irish bar selling rubbish, flavourless beer (as good as though those places can be occasionally...).

I don't know about Yates. It would not be viable for that to happen on its own (what would you do with the upper floors?). Unless they went into partnership with an hotel chain, or apartments- unlikely above a potential pub- then I can't see it happening really.

Anyone else's thoughts?

Interesting rumours, Cat. You certainly seem to have your ear to the ground.  $good$

China Cave (or rather Gimberts as it is now) - I believe the rent is around £50k a year on that, whereas the rent on the old Hoosons is only £35k for what is (in my opinion) a bigger and better location. Still, corporates don't always think logically or cost effectively. Costa were originally mooted for the ground floor of the revamped Clarence Hotel, maybe these chaps are coming instead, they have an aggressive expansion policy

Cooneys - maybe the rent is significantly lower on Gimberts, so he is moving the whole lot a few doors down? Can't think of many other reasons for doing it.

Yates - certainly a possibility, with a Premier Inn on the upper floors. Premier Inn had agreed in principle to take the upper floors last year. Coincidentally, there were surveyors at the Tudno Castle on Monday afternoon taking a good look at the facade.
