Booming Llandudno has fewest empty shops in Wales
Llandudno is defying the march of internet shopping with the best vacancy rates for towns across Wales.
The town centre – under the management of Mostyn Estates – has worked hard to fill empty units across the seaside resort.

This will see the vacancy rate dip below 6% once plans for Specsavers to expand and jewellery business Warren James to come to the Victoria Centre are complete.
This is the lowest rate for towns of its size in Wales and among the best compared to towns in the North West of England as well.

The average UK rate is double that at more than 12%.
Mostyn plan to keep investing in the recently purchased Victoria Centre - including changing the parking arrangements to make it easier for drivers.

Mostyn’s managing director Edward Hiller said: “In tough trading times Llandudno continues to attract lively interest from retailers and within a few weeks it’s expected that the number of empty properties will fall below 6%, making it the best performing town of its’ size in Wales and it would also rank as one of the best in the North West of Britain.
“The potential of having 94% or more shops open and trading in Llandudno is phenomenal.”

Mostyn Estates are particularly pleased about lively interest in empty units at the Victoria Centre which they acquired towards the end of 2015.
Specsavers are soon to enlarge their existing store by expanding into an adjacent unit, while jewellery business Warren James will be opening in one of the empty units within the next few weeks.

Managing director Mr Hiller said: “Having taken ownership and management of the centre late last year we’ve carried out an active programme of improvement works both internally and externally and we will be continuing these in the coming months.
“I’m encouraged by the level of interest in the centre from prospective occupiers and we are currently in detailed discussions with three interested parties.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the centre achieve its’ full potential.”

Interior and exterior painting have given the centre a fresh look, and the benches on the pavement outside have also been refurbished.
The car park will also see a significant overhaul, to make it more attractive to park in.

I believe this is good news for Llandudno.

However, when I tried to visit the Tourist Information Office last Sunday within the Library Building, I found it was closed.

Joining me outside was a group of tourists wanting to book the Alice Trail.

I returned the next day and enquired about the TIO being closed and I was informed it will begin opening on Sundays in June.

I noticed yesterday that the Retro Collectibles shop from Craig y Don has moved into Chapel St, next to Tribells.
Only had time for a quick look, but a lot better organised than previously, very interesting items, I had a good find there last year, a signed print of the RAF "Memorial Flight" by Robert Taylor.

I suppose it is to do with population, Conwy's being much smaller

UK retailer BHS could file for administration as early as Monday, threatening 11,000 jobs, the BBC understands.
Sources close to the owners told the BBC that "things don't look good".
Talks are continuing with Sports Direct to buy some of BHS's 164 stores but it is understood any buyer would only do so if it did not have to take on its £571m pension deficit.

Despite last month winning the support of landlords to reduce rents at some stores, BHS warned that it needed extra funding to continue trading.
It had been due to announce a new £60m loan last week, but failed to do so, according to one report.

Retailer BHS files for administration
High Street retailer British Home Stores (BHS) has filed for administration, putting 164 shops and almost 11,000 jobs at risk.
Administrators Duff & Phelps will now try to find a buyer for all or part of the 88-year old business, but in the meantime BHS will continue to trade.
They said BHS had "no alternative but to put the group into administration".
If a buyer is not found, it would be the biggest High Street collapse since Woolworths in 2008.  REF BBC

Sorry to see any shop closing, but two card shops so close together would have been tough, and I think the centre needs more variety anyway.

Retailer BHS files for administration
High Street retailer British Home Stores (BHS) has filed for administration, putting 164 shops and almost 11,000 jobs at risk.
Parc Llandudno have submitted plans to extend the mezzanine floor by 1,000 sq.mts.
It is to ensure the unit remains “commercially viable” although it is not clear if this is to help retain BHS or attract a new occupier if the chain does leave.
The resort has the best occupancy rates of towns its size in Wales and sources say that Primark could be interested in coming to Llandudno if the right size unit can be found.

Indigo Planning have submitted the application on behalf of Parc Llandudno.
In the report, they say: “The economic downturn has had a significant impact on the retail sector, with many retailers closing down altogether.
"The proposed development provides an opportunity for economic growth.
“It will ensure that the unit remains commercially viable.”
They added: “It will provide more job certainty in the local area by improving the unit’s viability. The increase in retail floorspace will provide new jobs in the local area.”
