great pics there  It's always amazed me how the builders of the archways new to make them big enough for todays traffic  If only todays planners could think so far ahead

Joking aside, quite a few of Conwy's archways are not original, the one above was constructed by Thomas Telford for his new road in 1826, as was the one on the Bangor Road. Curiously, the little pedestrian archway at the side of the harbourmaster's office is original. The one on Berry Street was built to enable easier access to the Bodlondeb Estate sometime in the 1800s. The oldest way into Conwy is the archway opposite the British Legion (by Conwy Visitor Centre), the pathway actually predates the town walls as a means of access into Conwy, hence it is on an odd angle to the walls themselves.
