'Tacky' attractions and drink stalls next to historic Welsh town's castle and walls come under fire
The rides and cabins are in an event space on Conwy Quay

Tacky? attractions and drinks cabins set up in the shadow of Conwy?s 13th century castle have been criticised as unfitting for the medieval town. The refreshment stalls and children?s rides, which include an inflatable slide and a mechanical merry-go-round, are set up on the council?s event space on Conwy Quay.

But not everyone in the town is happy with the attractions, given they are so close to the castle and its walls, a World Heritage Site, which tourists travel from across the world to see. Conwy resident Richard Hughes was walking along the quay with his family when he spotted the attractions.

THE first stage of the new UK-wide BoatLife Fishing Championship will be taking place at Conwy Marina on May 17-19.

Conwy has been selected as the first location for the national catch and release competition due to its ?rich sea fishing history and stunning coastal scenery?.

Known for its diverse range of fish species, the tidal patterns of the Conwy Estuary will give seasoned professionals entering the pro competition and weekend anglers in the privateers competition the chance to show off their skills as well as compete for trophies and great prizes.

A STRAY buoy has been rescued in Conwy after it had been washed away during Storm Pierrick earlier this month.

The Conwy Fairway Buoy is normally located in the middle of Conwy Bay, marking the start of the Conwy Harbour approach channel.

It weighs about 1.5 tonnes and is fitted with large weights to help it withstand rough sea conditions.

Staff at Conwy Harbour rescued it before sending it on its way back out to sea.

Plans for this skyline dominating landmark in historic town divides opinion
Civic Hall plans have been submitted to Conwy county council

Plans for an ?apart-hotel? and a food hall at a former Conwy library have received a mixed response from residents - with some fearing parking could worsen in the town. Developer Nautical Point has submitted two planning applications to Conwy?s planning department, seeking permission for 15 apart-hotel units at the grade-two listed Civic Hall, as well as an artisan food hall with stalls.

As the council's 'preferred bidder', Nautical Point is believed to have reached an agreement with Conwy over the purchase of the council-owned building, should planning permission be agreed. Cash-strapped Conwy is currently reviewing its estate with a view to raising much-needed funds by selling several of its historic buildings, including its Bodlondeb HQ.

What to expect at this year’s Conwy Pirate Festival

THE CONWY Pirate Festival returns to the town this weekend, with two days of swashbuckling fun in store.

The annual event - which attracts thousands, many in fancy dress - features a treasure hunt, barrel and keg race, music and entertainment, and the ever-popular pirate attack.

In the pirate attack, militia re-enactment groups defend Conwy from the Pirate Ship attack with a battery of black powder cannon and muskets.

The battle is a great success and enjoyed by all who attend, also giving the public a living demonstration of life at this time in history.

Sea dogs and landlubbers alike descended on Conwy at the weekend for the town's annual Pirate Festival.

The event celebrates Wales' rich history of buccaneering seafarers, such as Pembrokeshire's infamous Black Bart, the former Governor of Jamaica Henry Morgan from Llanrumney and Rhuddlan brothers Owen and John Lloyd, who some believe were the true inspiration for Long John Silver in Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island.

The festival attracts thousands of visitors to Conwy each year to discover more about pirate history, immerse themselves in the music and arts that came out of the period and much more.
