I believe that most "spooky" pictures are the innocent result of a double exposure from that time that cameras had films that had to be wound on after each shot.   Don't suppose one sees many now that we are in the digital age.

The photo was taken. When the friends looked at it, someone said "little johnny looks just like a ghost in that pic, doesn't he?". Everyone agreed and Mr Summers thought to himself "I can make some money out of this". So he phones up the Daily Mail, tells them all about it and they pay him £500 to use the photo.

Case closed.

I wonder whether the photo above captures the extent of just how cold it is.. perhaps the sea water has turned into ice vapour as it has splashed up.. this might seem a crazy idea, but in low temperatures, providing it has been persistently cold, sea water could in theory turn into ice vapour instantly.
