I think it would be easier to eliminate a few towns, and state where it is not... it might help narrow the search down.

For example, it is not on the East coast of England as the promenade area is too low and flat.
Nor does it look like anywhere in North Wales.

The South coast of England is my best guess, unless it is in the North West?, ... with Morecambe being a contender in that case.

the sun goes from east - south - west and shadows point west - north - east during the day. So that rules out the south coast of england in this picture

That looks like a pier in the right background?

To me it does look like an east coast resort. Not sure if this works with the shadows?
It has a look of Aldeburgh.

I can't remember that big building in Aldeburgh though. Looks like it could be a bigger place than that?

Well done Dwsi,  so technically it IS on the East Coast, despite being in the South of England.

Lowestoft has 2 piers Dave, and they are both a bit rubbish.
As is Lowestoft itself, recently highlighted as being one of the most deprived towns in the whole of the UK.
Terrible immigration problems, sky-high unemployment, and more...

Well done, Dwsi.

I've only just caught up with this thread but as soon as I saw the first picture I thought that it looked like Lowestoft.  My mother was born not far from that picture (a bit further into the distance).

Fester, I wouldn't say that Lowestoft is in the south - I thought that "The North" began at Watford Gap!

Glad we could help, Miss Veltmeijer.

Lowestoft used to be a very busy port, with quite a big fishing fleet, so your dad's boat must have visited the port.

Your written English is very good.  I'm sure that the majority of us would not be able to write so well in another language!

Thanks again,

My dad sailed at the Dutch Merchant Shipping,
in the early fifties.

As you can see in the picture, he met someone there ;-)
<< it might just be that there is a brother/sister of mine who lives in England ?  ;) >>

When I was 2 years old my dad took me for the first time to England,
and than I came every year back for 2 or 3 weeks summerholiday.

Even now , I go every year back to England.
My last visit was Cornwall ,... I think England is a beautiful country.
I think I saw more of England than of my own country  ;-))

I was in Yarmouth , I think thirty years ago ( with my dad )
But I never been to Lowestoft,  so I think my next visit shall ( or is it will ) be there ;-))

Thnx  $thanx$

Lowestoft is the most easterly town in the UK and it nudges the north border of Suffolk. Just over the border is Norfolk - Hopton, Gorleston and Gt Yarmouth. I live 13 miles inland from Lowestoft (equidistant with Norwich and Gt Yarmouth) and our dog often used to take me for a walk along the area shown in the photo. Just down the small cliff from the prom is the 'German Ocean.'  Y^^Y
