Tripod? Or very steady hands?
;D Very steady hands and breathing in whilst taking the shot! Either that or balance the camera on a wall, railing etc, With my new D700, it handles ISO up to 6400 with practically no noise, so will be invaluable for the next round of night photos. I also have the Nikkor 50mm f1.4 lens, which is ideally suited for low light work.

I'm seriously impressed. Those shots are sharp.

Why not splash out and get a decent camera like a Nikon? _))*
-
Now how did I know you were going to say that? :Scot:
-
Excellent pics Dave.
-
Cheers, mate! Being honest, it takes me about 20 shots at night to get one decent one. :-[
-
I used to dabble a bit myself before the digital age. Mostly B&W though because I could D&P it myself instead of sending it off to Truprint and waiting a week!
-
Ohh, Dave...those images are fabulous.
On holiday and suchlike I always try and get some night shots with my £120 point and shoot jobbie, but they are always blurred and disappointing.
I've just arrived home after an evening out and those pictures make me want to got back into town again!
-
Excellent shots Dave. ;)
-
They are fantastic photos Dave, I'm like Fester and my camera is always set on auto for a point and shoot and the results are sometimes disappointing.
-
With point and and shoot cameras, it is possible to decent night shots but its certainly a lot trickier! Best thing is to try and get the Auto Focus to lock on a source of light somewhere in the scene you are taking the photo of. Without that, the Auto Focus cant operate and you'll get out of focus images. Also a good idea to try and balance the camera on a wall, litter bin, railing etc as the camera will knock the shutter speed right down due to the low light, again making hand held shots very likely to be blurred.
-
Just looking through the tele mag and see there is a programme on Channel 5 at 7-30 tonight about photography it`s in 6 parts. Just thought it may be of some interest to Dave R or Hugo.

I'll try that, I've got a decent camera (Olympus SP-500UZ) but find the instructions baffling and tend to keep it on AF, I'm clueless about shutter speeds and white balance etc. Seem to get decent shots now and again and use the edit facility quite a lot. Having said that I'v just bought myself a pocket sized camera for £60 and seem to be getting decent shots from that too!

Giving a camera on auto works fine most of the time as long as the light is decent, but they do struggle badly at night time, even on the night setting (the little half moon symbol). With your Olympus, you should try it on S setting (shutter priority) which is like Auto but you have control over the Shutter speed. Depending on how dark it is or how much light is entering the frame, you could set the shutter on anything from 1/50th sec down to 1/10th sec and see how it goes. The great thing about digital camera is you can take shot after shot without it costing you anything, so you could try taking the same photo at a whole range of shutter speeds and see what works and what doesn't. It's the best way to learn.
I just bought (yet) another camera, a pocket sized Nikon S640 - its smaller than a packet of cigarettes but delivers pretty good photos, was £130:

Dave,
Are you now hopelessly addicted to buying cameras?
I have to ask this because I can't understand why someone who ones a camera worth £1000's, would bother with another costing £130?
Are you to cameras what Imelda Marcos was to shoes??

:D The answer comes to down to practicalities. If I'm walking down Mostyn Street on an ordinary day, I don't want to be carrying a camera like the D700 which, with a lens fitted, weighs the same as a bag of sugar. I can use the little pocket Nikon and thats fine for any snapshots like the work going on in the Ethel Austin shop. If I'm out photographing the high tides in the Winter, I need a decentish quality photo but, again, dont want to risk getting the big Nikon soaked by a wave and several grand of camera down the drain. :o So, I'll use the Sony HX1 on that occasion:

More worrying for me Andy!! my workplace might get swept away.
The day after that picture was taken, I opened up the shop and found water inside, and splinters of wood.
Its a good job those Victorians knew how to build things ....hell even Colwyn Bay pier survives storms like that, with NO assistance from engineers for many years now.

Interesting shot of Cayley Prom in Rhos at night, I was experimenting with the camera so nowhere near as sharp a shot as I would like. Will try again.

A trick that can assist in keeping the camera steady, is to put a screw in the base of the camera, for the tripod fixing, ( 1/4 Whitworth I think ) or use a tripod mount. Fasten a piece of string to it, long enough to reach the ground as you hold the camera, put your foot on the end of the string and pull taught when taking the photo. It helps to avoid some camera shake. ££$
-
Or just tie the sting around the camera.
-
Perhaps I'll start taking my tripod with me! D)

A monopod is probably easier and doubles as a walking cane. $wales

I sometimes use the Gorillapod (http://joby.com/gorillapod). Cheap, easy to carry and does a good job.

I sometimes use an Isopod.....cheap, flexible, but sometimes runs off with my camera.

First thing you need is a tripod, no reason to struggle doing it hand-held like I do. Doesn't need to be an expensive one, you can get them on ebay for a pound or two.
At night, to state the obvious, there is a lack of light! So, the objective is to let as much light into the lens as possible to get a decent image but not so much that the image is washed out with too much light.
The easyish way - On most decent cameras, there will be an S option - that means 'Shutter Priority' or, to put it another way, all you have to do is select the Shutter speed and the other settings will be made automatically by the camera. So, a bit of trial and error is needed. Set the shutter to, say, 1/10th sec, and then try and get the autofocus to lock on to something like a distant streetlamp to that the focus is set correctly. Take the shot and see how it comes out. Remember to press the shutter button down gently to avoid shaking the camera and causing blurriness.
Too dark? Reduce the shutter speed further, to maybe 1/5th of a sec - you're giving it more time to let light into the lens. If it's still too dark, reduce the shutter speed again. Once it reaches zero, it will start to register in seconds, 1 sec, 2 sec etc.
Too light? Too much light is being let into the lens, so increase the shutter speed and try again. If it was on 1/10th sec, try it on 1/20th sec etc.
Doing it manually (the not so easy way) - you need to alter the following 3 controls on your camera:
Shutter Speed ( usually shown as something like 1/100) - This one is trial and error but, at night, will probably need to be anything from 1/10th second to a several second exposure (to get those nice trail effects on car headlamps)
Aperture (usually shown as something like f/2.5) - this needs to be as low as your camera/lens will allow ideally (until you get the hang of night photography).
IS0 (usually shown as a figure like 100) - the higher the figure, the lighter the photo BUT also the grainier the photo becomes. So, it's a tradeoff.
-
I have a new tripod with QR coupling available if you want one. £10 and free delivery to Penrhyn Bay! :D
-
An example of a very long exposure, This is a 25 second shot on Penrhyn Bay Promenade I did a couple of years back. Note how the car lights form one long trail and the street lights have a star effect around them. Because it was a very long exposure, I needed to knock the aperture up to avoid the image being far too light, so I set it on f/13. The ISO was able to remain low at 160, this giving a pretty sharp image.
(http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1061/1386681878_671af45783_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/davellandudno/1386681878/)

This is a 10 Second exposure at f/9 at the mini roundabout in Penrhyn Bay. This one is actually a bit too light (note the 'keep left' bollards are washed out), so I should maybe have increased the aperture from f/9 to maybe f/11. As with the other image, the ISO was set at 160:

Great stuff. Something showing up on the Llandudno bay intriges me. On top of the hill behind Craigside (not the Little Orme) there appears to be an illuminated pencil type structure sticking up. Its obviously high at that distance. With the benefit of the original, is this something there or, dare I say it, is it a fluke with the camera? The only thing I can think of around this position is the transmitter aerial at I think its called Moel y Parc. Its above Bodfari. Thats an awful long way away, and, of course, its not a single light, just warning lights to aircraft. This looks like a single light. Mike
-
Looked at it again. Its not Moel y Parc, its too far over to the left. I havent a clue what it is
-
The tower on Rhyl promenade perhaps?
-
It's definitely a mast of some sort, are you sure it's not Moel Y Parc, Mike?
I blew up the image as far as possible, it's above Bodafon Fields when looking from Pen Y Dinas and it's a very large structure:
-
Thinking about it more, it appeared a year or so back and pink was the colour of the digital tv switch over campaign, so maybe it was something to do with that?
-
No, looking at it blown up, it is Moel y Parc, I was correct the first time. Never change your mind. That will teach me.
-
I just found it on a map, too!
-
This proves it. You said you had a good camera, its mega good. You can see four distinct individual lights. I said it had warning lights for aircraft, but I wouldnt have thought any camera would pick them out individually at that distance. Must be 35 miles, maybe more
-

Restaurants come and go, owners change, they get a new image with a new name. The Clemence in your photograph carries the same name for, to my knowledge, fifty five years. And in the same spot doing the same thing. You cannot accuse them of being fly by nights.
-
I took this this mornng, but it came out grainy and this was the best one!
it came out grainy because the ISO was quite high, I see it was set (probably automatically) at 800, because of the low light. On most cameras, the photo will appear grainy at anything other than 100 or 200.
You used the setting of 0.5 sec shutter speed and f/3.1. Did you use a tripod? If so, try setting the shutter speed to, say, 3 secs, and knock the f-stop up a bit to around 10 or 11 and see how that comes out. If there's an option to set the ISO yourself, you could set it at 200 to keep a sharp photo. Try doing a few shots and alter the shutter speed slightly after each one. If it's too dark, then reduce it to, say, 2 secs, then 1 sec, etc until the photo is well lit. On the other hand, if it's too bright, then increase the shutter speed from 3 secs to 4 secs, then to 5 secs until it looks ok. Let me know how you get on.
-
I've been trying to see my settings after I've taken the pic and I can't yet somehow you can? I'm still looking at how to alter the iso setting, the camera is a Fujifilm Finepix s1900, not on a tripod as I just nipped out in the cold this morning and leaned the camera on the wall, I'll get there in the end, thanks for your advice Dave :)

I'm using Windows XP, left clicking does nothing except with your (excellent) pictures when it links to your Flickr site, at least now I know I'm not going mad! L0L

Oh I see, you mean you're clicking the photos on the forum! No, I mean when the photos are stored on your hard drive and you are viewing them in the Windows folder there!

Hi MrFalafel, not bad! You could try using manual settings with the tripod and see how it affects the photo. Set the Aperture down to as low as possible, say f4, and the shutter speed to, say 1/10thsec. Doing it manually will mean you can choose to allow far more light into the photo, ending up with a far brighter overall image.

There's a small railing either side of the slipway, I just balanced the camera on top of them and held my breath when I pressed the shutter release. The sand is illuminated by the glare of the Prom lights, which becomes more visible when using a slightly longer exposure.

Hey Dave - I have to say, your photography is fantastic! - and consistently so too. You even manage to make the Spar shop in Rhos look iconic - like something out of 1950s USA - amazing. I have really enjoyed seeing these superb photographs of my old home town and environs - to me they are images of paradise. When I look at your pictures I realise how much I miss my homeland.
I mean, the Netherlands is beautiful with it's huge skies, windmills and water, water everywhere... but when I saw the night shot from Pen y Dinas (Llandudno Bay At Dusk) I really wished I was there. How can I buy a print of it?.
Thanks again and please keep 'em coming!.
-
Ok - just seen the print on the Emporium website - really good value at £9.99 too. A couple of questions though if I may: I would really like a bigger print - say A3 - is that also possible? and one more, are the prints photographic prints or inkjet? I couldn't see any details on the website. I will buy a nice set of four different shots I think....
Thanks again Dave - keep up the great work!.
-
Hello,
All the Prints are done on proper Photographic paper by a professional photo printer. Most of them can be done in A3 size, although it does cost a bit more, as the cost of printing them rises a lot when you go above A4 size. If you'd like to send me a PM with the ones you are interested in, I will see if its feasible.

Hey! - thanks Paddy. They are nowhere near Dave's standard, but they are a great reminder for me of my visit. I have a few more actually, but I don't want to clog up the forum with loads of my pictures!. There are a couple I can use in the quiz thread though - I haven't done that yet and it looks like fun....
-
Very enjoyable looking at those this morning Ludo. Your posts are always so interesting. looking forward to some tricky quiz questons!
-
Good morning Hollins - thanks for your encouragement!, I'm really happy you liked them. Llandudno is so beautiful when you really look at it isn't it?. I am so proud to have grown up there, I am always rambling on about it at work over here - and it is amazing the number of Dutch friends and people I know here who have actually been - and loved it!.
Yes I have at least two dastardly puzzling items for the quiz thread - I'll try and put them up there today...
-
Great pics there Ludo $good$. Not that easy to do!
-
Thanks ME - the camera I was using at the time was not very good so they could have been better. I had a Fujifilm S9600 with me to save weight on the plane as I only had carry on luggage. I usually use a Nikon D200 with various lenses for my work and the difference in quality is astounding. I am considering the D800 but there is a huge waiting list for them - I would have to save my pennies anyway, as they are not cheap.
-
Great photos, Ludo, I like the Elms Hotel one in particular. $good$
I use a D700; I was thinking about getting the D800 but, good as it is, it didn't offer anything really groundbreaking over a D700.
-
Hi Dave,
Thanks for your encouragement - it is greatly appreciated. The D800 is 32 megapixels as opposed to the D700 and D200's 12.1, and as a full frame sensor among other things, at that resolution it provides far better potential for cropping while retaining good resolution. The on-camera processing at sensor level is much less in the D800 than in the Nikon semi-professional range, allowing more control to the photographer in Photoshop Camera Raw.
I have just read your post about the wickedness of the St George's Hotel - terrible that!. I hope they are prepared to pay for your wonderful image. That is the trouble with the internet though - it is a honey pot for copyright theft and although there are the beginnings of a fight back from professional musicians, film makers and artists, it is still very much like the 'wild west' online at the moment. I think it will change in time.
PS: I edited this post because I originally wrote W W W instead of 'internet' and it appeared as a devil icon instead - although strangely appropriate in this context I thought....
-
Dave unleashed his 'enforcer' against the St Georges. ;) ;)
A full apology was extracted.... and various assurances obtained. Z**

The D700 is full frame, makes a big difference! A new set of FX lenses was nearly £2000 but well worth it, I have the 50mm, 15-30mm, and my favourite, the 28-300mm. The extra megapixels on the D800 are sort of nice, but larger and larger file sizes are playing havoc with my file storage. I'm already using 2TB drives as I have well over 100,000 images dating back about 8 years. :o
To be fair to the St. George's, I think it was a genuine mistake on their part.

Cool pic $good$

Do you have to use fast film for night photos? Forgive my ignorance I don't know anything about digita. They are really good though. Congrats.

Generally one uses a longer exposure so it's best to use a tripod if you have one. ZXZ
No doubt DaveR will add more technical stuff.

Thank you! No films at all with digital, each photo is stored on a memory card, you can store several thousand pics on one card potentially. Night photos, I do some handheld but ideally done with a tripod (or balancing camera on a handy wall etc) and an exposure of a second or two.

Oh thanks for that. I'll learn one day. I've got visions of you lying flat out to get that super one of the pier.
-
Haha, I did actually have the camera on the pier deck for that photo.

A couple of quick shots of Llandudno at night, done handheld on the pocket Sony RX100 camera. Not bad at all.

Looks great! The last one is my favourite!

Almost night photography, but comparatively I did have a dabble with drawing with light after much experimentation using darkness as a backdrop. I have been working on an ongoing art theme entitled 'Man's Relationship with Light', and have had some final photographic outcomes which transcended out of other mediums which I investigated. As you know light is paramount to photography, so it was a theme which I felt captured that strong relationship we have with light and how we try to capture it, manipulate it and recreate it. I hope you enjoy this series of light art photographs, and an insight into the journey of works which led me there.
