Title: Wrestling
Post by: Fester on April 28, 2011, 10:47:56 pm
Not John Tenta ..(aka Earthquake in pic 1), ...or in picture 2, as the short lived character Golga ..... The only real Mr Big, is Shirley Crabtree in picture THREE

Surely the REAL Mr Big was Martin Ruane AKA Giant Haystacks?  Almost 7 foot tall and with a fighting weight of near 50 stone.   Sadly no longer with us and probably scrapping in Wrestling Heaven with the Kids and Grannies' favouite, Big Daddy!

ITV's wrestling on Saturday afternoons would often conclude with a performance by him and Crabtree, which inevitably followed the same formula: BD would be nimbler, more effective and simply smarter in the first round, then GH would cheat, sneak and swindle his way to what seemed to be imminent victory in rounds 2 and 3, before BD would somehow - at apparently the final gasp - surmount the malevolence of GH and conclusively defeat him, with an ingenious 'move'.

I think what used to be so entertaining, however, was that although you knew the outcome was determined beforehand, the potential for something to go wrong, given the size and sheer mass of the two involved, was enormous, and always generated a feeling of real excitement.

My first wrestling "hero" was Bert Assirati who I used to watch at the outside wrestling arena at Beacontree Heath.  Bartolomeo Esserati (real name) was an English professional wrestler who became a multiple time British Heavyweight Champion, and, posthumously, a member of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Hall of Fame. He was known for displaying various feats of strength, including setting a British record in 1938 by lying on his back, and pulling over at arms length a two hundred pound barbell. At 240 pounds, Assirati was one of the heaviest men to perform the iron cross.  What a guy!    ZXZ

The thing was that professional wrestling, despite fixed outcomes, was genuinely entertaining, and the blokes that participated were incredibly good at what they did.

Bert Assirati was well known amongst his fellow wrestlersat the time as the hardest man on the circuit, and a man NOT to be messed with.
Yes it was meant to be staged, but this man would hurt you.
Les Kellett was a similar type in the 1970's

Ian, your memory of bouts between Haystacks and Daddy is flawed I think, I saw many of them, and basically they just ran and bumped into each other, belly to belly for 3 rounds, until Haystacks collapsed.  Magic stuff.

We are way off topic, so lets have a seperate WRESTLING thread, so we can discuss this properly.
Then wrestling anoraks like Dave R, Yorkie and I can run wild !!!!   OOHHH YEAH !!!

Well, his size and Haystack's mass made subtle and more ambitious moves very difficult, but he specifically teamed up with Haystacks so that he could play the 'good guy' against Haystack's 'baddie', often in tag teams, where he would 'rescue' his comparatively light-weight partner from Haystack's 'sneakiness' in what were - in reality - pretty formulaic bouts.  But he was a real loss to the world of entertainment, when he retired after killing an opponent.

But it was the scripting of matches - or at least, their outcomes - that probably finished pro wrestling in the long run, I suspect.  Which was sad, since they provided terrific entertainment and were hugely enjoyable.

I didn't think you were old enough to remember Bert!   You must have been but a gleam in your Father's eye!    ;D

I don't remember him personally, but my Father-in-Law goes on about him all the time.

My Father in Law used to train and socialise with lots of the wrestlerson the Northern circuit,  (Daddy, Alan Dennison etc...) and they all hailed Assirati as the main man.

I was always amused by the Annual "needle match" between Mick McManus and Jackie Pallo just before the Cup Final.  This was a real fight that emanated from a 5 year fued created when, on once occasion, McManus leapt out of the ring and kissed Pallo's wife.   The fued was even continued into the 1970's with Pallo's Son!    ZXZ

In my view, one of the most underrated U.S. wrestlers of the 1990s, 'The Career Killer' Mike Awesome, who sadly committed suicide in 2007:

Never seen him.. but I watched it, and I was impressed.

However, here is the Clown Prince of British Wrestling,  the genius that was Les Kellett.
Here, he takes on the outrageously effeminate Bad Boy Bobby Barnes.   Hilarious.

My 6 year old is obsessed with wrestling! Which is great as it gives me a good excuse to be equally obsessed lol I saw the wrestling recently that came to Venue Cymru in the hall and it was a very good night lots of dun. Nothing to when I was a kid and I saw the great Giant Haysyacks in there, but was still lots of laughs and the time flew, would recommend it to anyone with or without kids

A good friend of mine locally, and retired policeman, remembers a brilliant tale from the 70's when he was called to Colwyn Bay to make an arrest when someone damaged a door at the venue.

He had to arrest Giant Haystacks, (a 7 foot and 43 Stone giant) and the Canadian wrestler, Mighty John Quinn.  (roughly 6ft 10 and 25 stone of muscle)

They came to the station amicably, but they could not fit in the police van, nor could handcuffs fir around their massive wrists.

We've talked a little about the MACHO MAN RANDY SAVAGE in this thread, one of mine and Fester's favourites. Very sad news, therefore, when we found out that he had been killed in a car crash today, after suffering a heart attack whilst driving. He was 58 years old.

I heard that the Broadway Nightclub were hosting a pro-wrestling event last night.

Despite the show not starting till midnight, I couldn't resist going along as the tickets were only a fiver.
It featured 8 pro-wrestlers from an independent promotion known as Britannia Wrestling Promotions.
http://www.britanniawrestling.co.uk (http://www.britanniawrestling.co.uk)
A very impressive website actually.

It was poorly advertised, hence the attendance was small, but enthusiastic!
The show itself was excellent.
The wrestlers were in great shape, pulled off some great risky moves and delivered a great performance.

Local photographer Andrew Stuart has kindly sent me a few of the 20 million pictures he took last night, and thanks to him I have attached a couple below.

Dave, it was in a nightclub... they don't open til after 11pm.   So the attendance would have been much lower before 11 would it not?
Two other reasons for the poor attendance..
1. Llandudno was a ghost town last night.
2, 'certain people' who said they were coming to the show ... decided not to on the day, ahem,  ;) ;)

But the Boulevard opens at 7pm when it holds the Youthoria events? https://www.facebook.com/events/156193007781226/ (https://www.facebook.com/events/156193007781226/)

It doesn't take a genius to work out that any sort of event held at midnight is not going to pull in the crowds. The organisers must have made a hefty loss, they won't be coming back...

This weekend has seen the holding of Schwingen (Swiss Wrestling Festival).
It is held once every three years and this year it was held in a stadium in Burgdorf which was especially built for the event and will be dismantled at the end of it.
More than 250,000 visitors were expected. It had seating for 52.000 spectators and the event had a budget of 25 million Swiss francs.
This article explains about the history etc of the sport.

A common mistake!

Wrestling is FIXED but it isn't FAKE.

The matches are pre determined bedorehand but they still beat the hell out of one another in the ring as the massive injury list in any wrestling organization will be prove.

if they get hurt it is by accident they practice all the moves before hand and now and again things do go wrong, it is still good entertainment for those who love the sport but its not as dangerous as they would have you believe. Would I do it? you must be joking
Title: Re: Wrestling
Post by: Fester on September 06, 2013, 05:24:21 pm
Wrestling is extremely dangerous as is evidenced by 2 facts.

1, At any one time, 50% of the worlds premier wrestlers are 'on the shelf', i.e. The Injured List.

2, The vast majority of wrestlers are dead in their mid-thirties.   This is from a combination of steroid abuse, substance abuse but also an irreversible addiction to pain killers to get them through the next show.

I trained for 6 weeks to be a Wrestler back in the late 1980's, it was the most pain-filled and physically punishing period of my life.
