Title: The Llandudno Hotel
Post by: cypriana83 on March 24, 2011, 09:27:04 pm
Hi,

I was hoping someone could help with some information about The Llandudno Hotel.

It is believed that my ancestors worked there between 1940-1950 and i was wondering if there is any history of the hotel and/or the people who might of worked there?

Any information is appreciated.

Many Thanks.
 :)

Hiya and welcome to the Forum.  :)

Are you sure that it was called the 'Llandudno Hotel'? Seems too much of a generic name to be real - unless another member can enlighten me!

I'm afraid that I've never heard of a hotel here called the Llandudno Hotel.   What were your Ancesters names?

Thank you so much for all of your replies.

I think my father might of got the name for the Hotel wrong, sorry about that.  I suspect that it might of been The Grand Hotel, as he said it was on a cliff and he thinks it was burnt down but after trying to research hotels fitting this description i can only come up with this hotel.

Any information much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Although The Grand Hotel never burned down, the Pavilion building next door did.... and they are often linked in peoples minds.

It will be the Grand Hotel.  Its still in full operation, and its huge... therefore its history and workers etc is vast.

Can you narrow it down a little?   Pictures of The Grand are all over the forum Picture Gallery.

The Grand Hotel seems the most likely possibility:

The history of the Grand Hotel begins with the construction of the bathhouse in 1855. In 1858 the Pier was opened below bathhouse however this was severely damaged in the Royal Charter Storm of 25 October 1859, which caused the loss of 223 ships and 800 people in British coastal waters. Although repaired and used for a further 16 years, the pier was eventually replaced in 1876 at that time the bathhouse complex was extended with the construction of the Bath's Hotel the forerunner of the Grand Hotel.

Thank you very much for your replies.

My Grandmother has been rumoured to of worked there during WW2, between 1940-1950.  It might also be true that she met my Granfather while working there.

I would be very interested if anybody could help with any futher information.

Thanks  :)

Fester, don't forget there was also a serious fire on the roof of the Grand Hotel a few years ago.

I think the roof fire was what my father was talking about in relation to which hotel his mother and uncle worked at.

Would anybody know about any documentation for the workers there around 1940's?  I believe my grandfather worked there when he came from his home country.

Would be great to hear from anybody.

Many Thanks
