Title: Sarah Nicol Memorial Hospital
Post by: BrianP on February 21, 2011, 02:15:35 pm
I'm trying to find out where the Sarah Nicol Memorial Hospital was in Llandudno, and a photograph if possible.  My father's cousin died there in August 1926, after being involved in a motor accident.
Thank you,
Brian

It's shown on Google as the Llandudno General Hospital and someone on here must have a photo of it.  However there is an annexe in Maesdu Road that I've always known that building by the name of the cottage hospital.

PS   It is not the Llandudno General Hospital.
I've just checked with Ivor Wynne Jones' book Llandudno Queen of the Welsh resorts and at pg 84 it mentions the Sarah Nicol Memorial Hospital and that buiding a 40 bed hospital later became the Llandudno Youth Centre in Trinity Avenue Llandudno. I believe that the building is up for sale now but there are certainly photos of it here on the Forum.
Like many people in Llandudno I was a member of the centre when I was in my teens.

I've also had a look in Jim Roberts' book "Llandudno" and at pg 70 there is a good photo of the Sarah Nicol Memorial Hospital, it was opened in May 1885 to commemorate Mrs Nicol who died in 1884.   The Llandudno General Hospital took it's place in 1939.

Dave,  I've been unable to scan the photo of the Sarah Nicol Memorial Hospital (later Llandudno Youth Club) that was on pg 70 of Jim Roberts' book "Llandudno"
Have you got any old photos of the building that you can post here?

Thanks anyway for looking Dave.  We did have a topic on the Llandudno Youth Club in the old forum with some photos too but they must have gone.
I've sent BrianP a photo of the building yesterday and I'll try again to scan the book

Rather than scanning the page, you may be better off putting the book on a windowsill to get some good light and then just taking a photo of the page?

Goog idea Dave, I'll try that but in the meantime I've posted the photo that I took yesterday.

I tried taking a photo of the page as Dave suggested and this is the best of a bad bunch. Apologies for the quality.

Hello Hugo.

Do I remember my Mam saying it used to be the isolation hospital? For smallpox?

The Isolation Hospital (or Fever Hospital) was on Maes-du-Road - the former Annexe, or today's Brest Test Wales facillity

This postcard shows it was well and truly isolated at the time.

Two native American Indians were admitted to the hospital as patients when Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show was visiting Llandudno in 1904
