Title: Llandudno's Passages
Post by: Merddin Emrys on January 17, 2011, 10:55:45 am
yes it is, mind you I lost track of where i was as I was just concentrating on the back streets!

I also found this back alley amazing in that it had it's own street sign!

It's off Bodafon St and leads to the rear of the Alexandra Hotel.

The majority of small alleys and passageways around Llandudno were un-named for years, until one day, the council dicided to give them all names for some reason.

I suppose it makes them easier to identify for maintenance purposes etc?

It is amazing , some of the names are really unusual. What for instance is the connection for a back street to be named Arvonia Passage?

This would seem just the place for me to ask about Augusta Passage, in Augusta Street. It has a street sign but the passage itself doesnt appear to exist any more...?

It seems I can answer my own question. Looking at the large scale CCBC plan, it would seem that Augusta Passage ran for a hundred feet or so and connected with the end of Charlton Street. But when was it blocked up? Is it officially closed or just a landowner putting a gate across?

I don't know if there is or was any connection  but there is a large tour coach company based in Llanrug which goes under the name of Arvonia. I have always understood that the family owners took that name from the name of their house

There's also Rathbone Passage.

Maybe Rathbone had a problem with his passage?  ???

from my book 'streets of llandudno'  for Augusta Passage it says 'linking Augusta Street and Charlton mews, in 1990 it was named following a suggestion by Cllr. Phillip Evans.'

Where can you see this map Dave?

I downloaded it from somewhere, think its the Local Development Plan map. Will see if I can remember where I got it from - it's very detailed.

EDIT: Here is an interactive version of the whole County - you can zoom right down to individual house level.

Dave
It was blocked up about ten years ago because of anti-social behaviour late at night.  Basically it was being used as a toilet by late night revellers caught short while waiting for their kebabs from the Godfather or their chips from Becky's.  There is an entrance to the flat above Nicki Charles Hair Salon (Formerly West End Cycles) down the alley and I think it was Mostyn Estates that instigated the gate.  Jack

there was a passage on Gloddaeth Avenue between Clifton and Maelgwyn roads, I had a look on Google earth but it appears to have been blocked up

It was probaly what is now Breton Street, off Lloyd Street, which comes out on Clifton Road near the Gloddaeth end.

It was  a very narrow passage between two houses on Gloddaeth Avenue just past the corner shop, I can't remember where it led to but remember wheeling my bike down there. Looking at Google earth it looks as though it  was blocked up at the end of Breton street by "Snug Cottage"

There was also another passage in Gloddaeth Avenue between 6th and 7th (or maybe 7th and 8th)houses down from Great Ormes Road, on the Oval side.   It was just where 2 new houses had been built.  No idea of the name but I remember it being discussed in Council about it being blocked up by a resident.   Part can still be seen on Google Satellite running behind some of the old houses.

I've always wondered how Marble Arch came to be named. It's not made from marble, and is no-where near Hyde Park.

I don't know the answer to that one Trojan but the tunnel through the shop ( previously Lazar's } was once the entrance to farmland  belonging to St George's Hotel.

Does Rectory lane count as a passage?
Has Lloyd passage been mentioned?

I believe Marble Arch was just a nickname that the council adopted.

Dwsi, where is Lloyd Passage? That's a new one on me.

Lloyd Passage runs from St Mary's Rd to St David Rd, behind the lifeboat station

Primrose passage anyone?

from "Streets of Llandudno" Primrose passage is the service road behind Rosebery Avenue and Mostyn Avenue, Until 1910 its name was Back Rosebery Avenue. The name is the  family name of the Earls of Rosebury. The road was made up in 1920. No. 4 Mostyn Avenue (Formerly Hills) was known as Primrose House. This area was developed by the Craig - y - Don Land Company

Has Lloyd passage been mentioned?

Rectory lane seemed to have once been called back Abbey Road (until 1910) and was bisected by the ornamental garden now occupied by nos 18-26 Abbey Road.
This seems strange as Abbey Road was then Tudno Street as far as Plas Gogarth.

Do passages in Craig Y Don count?

Curzon Passage off Curzon Road
and there is a 'something' Grove Passage also off Curzon Road but I can't make out what it says.

the other day we saw this passage leading off Upper Mostyn Street

The later sign (and wherever you look they are getting tatty and rusty) looks very sad compared to the earlier sign

Not quite the same kind off passage but my Dad was telling me the other day that the week before he went down the underground tunnel by the pier (there's a manhole in the grass)  He said there was little clog marks in the clay.  Sounds really interesting.
