Title: Unthinking Tourists
Post by: SteveH on July 28, 2022, 10:19:54 am
I/We usually post stories of Unthinking Tourists in the walking section, which is unfair to genuine walkers, hence this new thread, by the way, I decided on this title after realising that Ian would not accept my previous headings, I am open to better ideas......

Hugo, is Absolute morons your suggestion for a title for this page  ;)  also, I think I would not be a happy chappie living in the old house,
the tranquil scenery and wild life will soon move on if this continues,

You were lucky living in your old house when you did Steve.   Times have changed since then and some people have little respect for people and places.      I still believe that there are more good people than bad, but it's those bad ones that give everyone a bad name.
During lockdown the same ilk were wild camping near Llyn Geirionydd and causing trouble there.
They hurled verbal abuse at the Forest Rangers who asked them to move on and even when the Police were called these morons verbally abused the Police too.
They have no respect for anyone, including themselves, it's sad the way things are going

There must be DNA on some of those items. Could be they are on another database held by Police. I think a tourist tax might help to clear up their mess.

Calgary Bay , north west end of Mull.

Small toilet block is now looked after by a few locals after the council decided they could not afford to run it, how do councils get away with that ?
Some morons are stealing the toilet rolls and on occasion motor home owners are lifting the grating outside to empty their toilet tanks. The system is then blocked because can not cope and is not built for this type of use. There are plenty of campsites that are built for this service but these morons are not prepared to pay for their use. There have been cases of some of them going into small burial grounds to defecate behind the walls.
This behaviour has been going on all over the west highlands for the past 2 years , and the locals are getting fed up with it.

Wish they would all b------r off back to Benidorm.

It makes you wonder what their home surroundings are like. Do they treat their local area in the same way? Is it a case of anything goes when they venture off on holiday?

I should have thought the council has a civic duty to clean and keep the toilet block in a decent state. There are health and safety issues after all. May be the locals who do the work should send the council an invoice for their services.

Reading this it looks as though the councils have to close them if they are not prepared to operate them:

As the UNTHINKING cannot be trusted, this should be rolled out nationwide, there are safer alternatives available.

Marks & Spencer ban sale of disposable barbecues in all UK stores
Campaigners are calling for a flat out ban after the barbecues were found to be the cause of several fires during the heatwave

Marks & Spencer has confirmed that disposable barbecues will no longer be sold in any of its stores across the UK. The retail giant made the move in a bid to help the environment.

Environmental activists and fire and rescue services have long called for a ban on the items. Now, M&S is following other leading supermarkets, including Aldi and Waitrose by banning them.

A wildfire in Flintshire last night was caused by an unattended barbecue, the Fire Service have confirmed.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service tackled the blaze for almost three hours in Talacre on Friday evening.

The service received a number of calls at 8.27pm on August 12 and responded by sending three units.

Approximately 200 sq metres of grass was damaged as a result.

I have noticed that many potential camp, or caravan parking sites, are taking precautions so that it is impossible to get on to them. Councils will need to make plans to tackle this problem which looks set to get worse in future. It only takes a couple of bollards, or an entry with a height restriction to stop the caravans.

A FB message to FOWS ....  from morons to angels

Hi folks, Friends of the West Shore just an FYI in case someone else finds them, all left and dumped 10 minutes walk along the beach from the cafe.
I actually saw the culprits enjoying themselves on Sunday evening. What a devastating mess there this morning, wildlife of course has had a rummage too. There?s sharp metal from disposable barbecues and with two dogs with me I didn?t  collect anything myself unfortunately. Sooo much glass, cans, plastic bottles, chairs, balloons, disposable cutlery and plates, kids toys, x2 tents and a gazebo! - you name it
I phoned the council and that was a ?not our area? from them so it?s now in the hands of Natural Resources Wales, I suggested the help of the What 3 Words app so they will hopefully pinpoint them easily.
Take care out there folks, it?s a few hundred yards from where the dune fire was- same night too.

followed by this message  ....

I saw a post earlier about the mess the beach was left in, so I took my daughter and her friend down there to help collect the rubbish. They picked up plastic, clothes , bottles, foil trays and even other people?s poo bags. We filled 2 bin bags, sadly I couldn?t carry the tent too otherwise I would have.

Snowdonia rescuers urge people not to judge Boxing Day 'idiots' stranded on mountain in darkness
After plucking four men to safety, their saviours said 'everyone makes mistakes'

As darkness fell, and equipped with just two torches, they found themselves cragfast on Tryfan, a 917.5-metre peak on the Glyderau range. All four were safely brought down by five members of the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Organisation (OVMRO).

On social media, the team was praised for its skill and expertise in completing a tricky rescue in pitch darkness. But the four hikers were condemned by some for their ?foolish? behaviour and for endangering the lives of others.

?Absolute idiots starting out at midday knowing darkness comes on at 15.30,? said one person. Another added: ?This is yet another unnecessary rescue .... you guys yet again risked your own lives to rescue idiots.?

But OVMRO cut the four men some slack. Despite making errors, they had subsequently made some good decisions, said the rescue team.

Thankfully no member of the Mountain Rescue team was hurt rescuing those idiots,  but it could have been so different as others have found out to their cost unfortunately
Accidents can happen even to experienced walkers who also have the right gear but setting off at midday is a definite no no.    I hope those people who have been rescued will realise just how lucky they are and make a sizeable donation to the MRT
Let's hope that we don't have a repeat of this on New Year's day

People are being urged not to take unnecessary risks at beauty spots to post photos on social media after a group had to be rescued from an unstable quarry ledge.

Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team helped three people after two became stuck at the Dinorwig slate quarries, Gwynedd.

The incident happened at about 13:00 BST at Sinc Galed quarry hole, known to climbers as California.

The team is urging inexperienced people to avoid exploring quarries.

Posting to Facebook, the rescue team said: "With no set plan in mind, they decided to scramble to the top of the eastern wall of the quarry hole up towards Pen Garret.

"This is an area of the quarry that even experienced rock climbers have avoided, being described as 'hideous' and 'harrowing'," the statement said.

The rescue team added the group were "wise" to call for help after two people became stuck on an unstable ledge about 35m (115ft) from the top of the cliff.

Twelve team members attended, and one was lowered on a rope to the group's location.

The team then set up a two-line hauling system at the top of the cliff and each person was hauled safely to the top in separate lifts.

Woman gets stuck on Snowdonia cliff after falcon attacks her pet parrot
The woman was left stranded after climbing the upper cliffs of Glyder Fawr to rescue her lost bird

A woman had to be rescued from an Eryri cliff yesterday after her pet parrot was attacked by a falcon. The woman was part of a group of parrot owners from Derbyshire who had come to Glyder Fawr to fly their birds.

When a peregrine falcon swept down to attack the group, one of the woman's two pet parrots flew away towards the cliffs higher up the mountain above Cwm Idwal. With her second parrot perched on her rucksack, the woman climbed up to the perilous position to retrieve her bird after locating it on a tracker.

Beauty spot selfies are tempting more people to take on challenging routes of Wales' tallest mountain, according to a national park official.

Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team said a rising trend of callouts at Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon, could become unsustainable.

Volunteers were sent to seven incidents in a single day during this summer.

Angela Jones, from Eryri National Park, also known as Snowdonia, said "social media has caused over capacity" at popular locations leading to issues including erosion, as well as pressure on car parks and rescue services.

"Social media certainly encourages people to go to different areas... or to try certain things that maybe they wouldn't have just thought about themselves," she added.

About 600,000 people climb the peak annually with the wider park seeing an influx since the Covid pandemic.

Wonder how long this problem can go on for before something gives.

Mountain Rescue Teams are finding it hard to keep up with demand. Most members have other jobs and rely on their employers releasing them to attend call outs. To give you an idea of the pressure, the following figures are the number of call outs this year  up to last weekend by some of the busiest teams, and it is still only mid August.

Llanberis  186
Lochaber  101
Keswick     81

Last weekend Oban Team were requested to assist Lochaber in the search for a missing walker in the Glen Moidart area. Area is so remote it takes 2 hours driving just to get to the RV Point from Oban.

Peaceful seal spotting walk one hour from Liverpool you need to visit
I couldn't believe how many seals there were

I've found a new walk that's going to stick in my mind forever, and it's called Angel Bay in Llandudno.

The nature reserve was a real hidden gem that I'd never heard of before, which offered an absolutely beautiful winter walk. The best part? There were seals - and loads of them!

Watching seals safely
The best thing to do is to move slowly and quietly, paying attention to any signs up on the beach. Always keep at least 100 metres away - that's about the same length as a full-sized football pitch. Use binoculars to watch them, and keep dogs on a lead or leave them at home if you can.

Dangers of Eryri's iconic waterfalls as visitors clamour for beauty spot selfies
Recent tragedies have highlighted the perils of visiting these magical locations

For a while, the odds at the waterfall were stacked against female walkers, a series of them needing rescue. Then mountain rescuers noticed a spate of middle-aged hikers falling and getting injured. Over the years, however, the iconic Eryri waterfall has been indiscriminate with its victims.

In mountain rescue logbooks, its name keeps cropping up. Volunteers are kept busy attending incidents, from a 10-year-old falling from trees nearby to a man, 70, tumbling nearly 23ft next to the waterfall. Last month a dog plunged down a deep ravine but was recovered unharmed.

Farmer forced to pick up other people's litter to keep rare Carneddau ponies alive
Gareth Wyn Jones is urging politicians to support initiatives that raise awareness of the Countryside Code

A high-profile farmer from North Wales has become a part-time litter picker to clear the mess left by thoughtless visitors. Plastic bottles and crisp packets are commonly discarded but in recent weeks Gareth Wyn Jones has also retrieved large items such as tents and sleeping bags.

Peeved by the amount of littering in the Welsh countryside, and the impacts on wildlife and livestock, he filmed a video of himself clearing up a nature reserve car park near his home in Llanfairfechan, Conwy. He’s now calling for a national social media awareness campaign and urged politicians to commit to anti-littering initiatives in July’s General Election.

Quite a surprise to see the numbers involved, also the implications for the rescue teams.....................especially after the two recent posts on the Walking thread...............

Noisy walkers caught on CCTV in early hours

People living at the foot of the most popular path to the top of the highest mountain in Wales have said their lives are being made a misery by noisy walkers in the middle of the night.

CCTV footage captures more than 100 walkers streaming down Victoria Terrace in Llanberis, Gwynedd, most with their head torches on and many talking loudly as they head to Yr Wyddfa, or Snowdon.

Christine Patton, who lives in the village, said such disturbances had become common during spring and summer.

"I'm really happy for people to go up," said Christine "but just be a bit quiet, respect us, just think there's people living here at the end of the day".

Campers, littering, aggressive dogs and parking are causing problems at a beauty spot.

With Llyn Tegid, Wales' largest natural lake, in Eryri, also known as Snowdonia, a popular location for water sports, local people expect a lot of visitors over the coming months.

Outdoor enthusiasts will be coming together in Eryri amid concerns about over-tourism. During the last weekend of August scored of like-minded people will be in mountains and countryside as part of Cymdeithas Eryri Snowdonia Society’s Make a Difference, or MaD Weekend.

They will be coming not to walk or climb, but to undertake practical conservation tasks to help protect and conserve the National Park.

Activities will include a canoe litter pick, a reptile and amphibian survey, footpath maintenance, an extreme litter pick on Yr Wyddfa, Rhododendron pulling, a family friendly litter pick and a workshop on recording ancient and notable trees on the ancient tree inventory.

The awful state of rubbish left on Wales' biggest mountain
Thousands of pieces of rubbish were collected by campaigners in just six hours

More than 2,700 pieces of litter were removed from Yr Wyddfa including 800 drinks containers. Expert climbers scaled the Trinity Wall gullies, a popular climbing face on the mountain, to clear litter while volunteers also cleared the Miner's Path.

A survey of the items collected was carried out and they say Lucozade, Red Bull, Coca Cola and Monster were some of the most prevalent brands with 274 plastic water bottles alone removed from the Snowdon trails in six hours.

'Fine the culprits' Mountain Rescue left stunned by ill-equipped walkers in -9C temperatures

The climbers were left open-mouthed by the ill-equipped walkers who went up Eryri's mountains in -9C temperatures - one party went astray because it followed a mobile phone "heat map trail" thinking it was a footpath

A mountain rescue team has pleaded with social media influencers to take greater responsibility when posting photos of dangerous climbs in Eryri (Snowdonia). In turn, the Llanberis outfit came under fire for posting its own video of a rescue from Yr Wyddfa’s notorious Crib Goch knife-edge ridge.

Largely, climbers and walker applauded the over-worked team for highlighting the way some influencers glamorise a location without fully accounting for the risks. At the same time, some fear that blaming influencers may absolve people of their responsibility to go into the mountains fully equipped and properly prepared....................https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/influencers-issued-warning-casualty-walked-30493302?IYA-reg=49560bcd-5a9c-47f0-8fc5-ba2e71710589

The main problem with web sites about climbing is that they're read largely inside warm, cosy houses, which detracts from their inherent dangers.  Crib Goch is a good example of showing something that is far from safe for inexperienced walkers and can present serious risks, even to the experienced.

In effect it's walking the rim of an ancient caldera (last active around half a billion years ago, so relatively safe, now  ;)) but successive ice ages have revealed the shapes and depths of the geological upheavals.

It's staggeringly beautiful from the Southern rim on a nice day, but you have to take care even so, and it's not a walk to take on a blowy day.

I started this thread back in July 2022, with 'Crazy' visitors abandon still-lit BBQ with burning, I see nothing has changed reading Hugo's post above............. and I think we were very generous naming the thread 'Unthinking Tourists'..............  :-\

I/We usually post stories of Unthinking Tourists in the walking section, which is unfair to genuine walkers, hence this new thread, by the way, I decided on this title after realising that Ian would not accept my previous headings, I am open to better ideas......

Wild campers using car park next to iconic Welsh landmarks and leave disgusting mess in woods
Campers are also parking on local streets to the frustration of residents

Freeloading wild campers are using parking spaces at a country park to stay overnight - leaving a disgusting mess in the woods. Ty Mawr Country Park is by the Grade II Listed Cefn railway viaduct across the River Dee and close to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

The Wrexham council run site is a popular place for walkers and other visitors - both from the local area and further afield. But recently its overflow car park has become popular with wild campers.

I have every sympathy with the residents of Newborough and my worst fears are that the unthinking tourists may either accidently or deliberately start fires that would destroy the forest and all the wildlife that live there
I do not know if anything has changed but many years ago the residents of Newborough had permits that were displayed on their cars that allowed them free access into the car park.   They also had a key to a second car park and the gate to the second car park is always loocked.
I know that because I had to use a key years ago.       I hope that that is still the case but it's little consolation to the residents when they get invaded by the tourists

There's a significant lack of planning and simply brains in terms of anticipating the effects of weather on activities, too. Five extreme running events on Snowdon were given the chop, with the organisers saying "Due to extreme temperatures, it is no longer safe to continue with the event....Our top priority is the safety and wellbeing of all participants. Please bear with us as we focus on ensuring everyone returns safely."

Shame, really, that they hadn't checked with the Met Office prior to starting the thing.

Beautiful World Heritage site in North Wales becomes 'dangerous nightmare' for drivers
'In Snowdonia (Eryri) they tow them all away for parking like this'

Despite signs warning of £1,000 fines, some local people were last weekend irked to see scores of barbecues at the tinder-dry site. Piles of litter were also photographed piled up high in the official car park.

It’s prompted calls for greater enforcement action by Denbighshire Council, and for a review of local parking arrangements. “It was a nightmare trying to get up and down the road,” said a resident on social media. “They would make a fortune if they ticketed them all.”
