I've just installed a new feature, which is a series of Photo Galleries. Perhaps you could all have a click and see if the galleries/photos display correctly for you? Please post on here if you have any problems, many thanks. Dave

The Llandudno Rose Queen from 1922.
Does anyone know who this little girl is? The name is on the card but obliterated for this posting.
It was very dark and I have done the best I can to make it viewable.

Not a postcard, but can't see where else to put it! just found this today, said to be from 1940, my mother, uncle and grandfather are on it my grandmother (whose maiden name was Bunney) was present but disliked having her picture taken! Looks like Mostyn Street with the Great Orme in the background.

-
It is Mostyn Street. Looks like they have just walked past Blades the Chemist no less.
-
Blades is now the 'Past Times' shop, formerly Bay Trading.

Thanks for the info Trojan and Dave *&(

I remember seeing the smoke over Llandudno as I went home from Junior School in Old Colwyn.

I remember seeing the smoke over Llandudno as I went home from Junior School in Old Colwyn.
Blackened coins suddenly appeared at the local amusement arcades when the embers died down. WWW

Wasn't there some controversy over the Demolition Contract??? Can't remember the details myself. ZXZ

Trivia Fact of the day is that the original Asda car park's foundation was made of all the rubble from the Craigside Hydro Hotel.

Trivia Fact of the day is that the original Asda car park's foundation was made of all the rubble from the Craigside Hydro Hotel.
Some more rubble trivia........
The rubble from the demolished Zion Chapel in Mostyn St was used for road foundations on the Links estate.
The rubble from the demolished Baths Hotel was used to fill-in the swimming pool in the pier pavillion.

The old Indoor Market (now the car park behind Wetherspoons):
[smg id=1050]

When that was closed and its future being decided, didn't someone climb onto and fall through the roof. He then successfully sued the Council I seem to recall and received quite a substantial payout.

I recall that too, Stan, now you mention it. Apparently the fact that he shouldn't have been there in the first place didn't matter!
-
The far corner on the photo used to house the old Gas Showroom. Above that is where the Blue Notes had their second bandroom - good music for those passing nearby in Mostyn Street. +}}{--
-
That photo brings back memories Dave, seeing the Dunphy`s lorry on the left i have said before on the last forum i think, that my father was the manager of Dunphy`s warehouse and bottling store, every weekday morning i went there to take his lunch box on my way to central school.
-
Great photo Dave.
The building on the right adjoining the market was the old Fire Station.
Those wagons bring back memories. I used to cadge rides from the John Garstang drivers as a youngster.
-
Garstangs green lorries, I remember those. :)

Llandudno Holiday Camp.

Is that on the opposite side of the road to Rhos Golf Club ?
-
Is that on the opposite side of the road to Rhos Golf Club ?
I am not 100% sure but that row of houses in the distance looks like Dinerth Road nestling in below Bryn Euryn. I think it must be higher up than where the GPO phone exchange was as the fields below the exchange (nearer the college) have always been a bit boggy!
-
You can see the tram tracks bottom left
-
The winding up of the Landudno Hoiday Camp in the London Gazette refers to Little Orme. Is it therefore somewhere around Bodafon Fields?
-
It is in Penrhyn Bay. What you've got in the picture is Dinerth Hall, with Penrhyn View on Dinerth Road in the background.
Did you know that the road going past the college was once known as vicars road?
-
It's Penrhyn Bay for sure and looks like it is in the fields opposite where Pedro's One to One cafe is now. I think that the village of Glanwyddan is visible on the right of the picture and the farm on the left may be Dinerth Hall Farm

Chapel Street 1905

Imagine how quiet the town would have been back then all day long, with only the occasional clip-clop of hooves to break the silence.

You've reminded me that I promised Merddin Emrys this morning that I would post this old photo of the West Shore Lake:

Imagine how quiet the town would have been back then all day long, with only the occasional clip-clop of hooves to break the silence.
If someone passed away in one of the houses they would have put straw down in the road to deaden the sound of the horses hooves - how times have changed!
-
West Shore in the 1930's
That's an *&( one. Shows the old West Shore jetty, and if you look beyond the boating lake, is that where the children's playground is today?
-
it is but it's difficult to tell what it was then, theres some sort of barrier across the footpath.

I just saw this photo of Llandudno on Ebay and it stumped me for a minute or two, as to where it was taken from and what I was looking at. Then I realised, it was taken from Gloddaeth street and its looking up to Llywelyn Ave...but there's no buildings in between! You can see the Tabernacl on the right. You'll have to click on the image to see it full size to have any chance of making sense of it:
[smg id=1152]
-
It looks like a BIG cheeseburger...
-
The area with trees opposite Gloddaeth Street was called Llys Madoc Field.
A 6000 seat octagonal wooden pavilion was built there to house the 1864 National Eisteddfod.
-
The building to the left of Tabernacl looks like today's Sunnyside Hotel.
-
Dave, correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks to me that the buildings in Llewellyn Ave end beyond today's Sunnyside Hotel, with maybe a building visible to it's left in Tudno Street.
If you look further left, it looks like Church Walks, with Old Road running up between the trees?
-
The building on the left, is most likely the Orme Court Hotel at the end of Tudno Street
-
Could anyone have a stab at the address of the building second from the left? It looks like my home!
-
If you live where I imagine you do from previous comments the second building visible from the left could be what is now the house below the Bistro which would be Old Road. The third one on could be Tudno St. Any help?
-
Building on the left is definitely the Orme Court Hotel, whilst on the right of the photo we have the Tabernacl and the Sunnyside Hotel.
The building to the immediate right of the Orme Court Hotel appears to be the back of the building on Church Walks that faces the Tram Station.
The buildings to the left of the Sunnyside Hotel are the buildings that are on Llewelyn Ave today (the roofline and windows all match up with the modern view on Streetview). What's certainly changed is that the ground floors all appear to be in use as shops, something I never previously knew.
Distances between buildings can appear very misleading in these early photos, as the perspective is a bit odd. Buildings can appear to be close to each other, when they are, in fact, not!
-
Do you think the building to the left of centre is the bottom of Old Road or elsewhere?
I'm with you with the Tabernacle and the Sunnyside, but as you say some of the others look strange.
Do you mean what was Blue Cloud Lodge? (!)
-
Do you mean what was Blue Cloud Lodge? (!)
Yes :)
-

Yes :)
That's what I thought it was. The other buildings on Old Road and Water St. must not have been built yet.

I may be wrong, but there seems to be a dearth of photos from the 1948 - 1960 period.

Clifton Road
I think I had an example of most of the cars on show, including an ex-GPO Morris 1000 van.
-
if the photo was taken from the other end of the street my dad's Hillman Imp may have been there!
-
Hi
The 1972 picture above is a scan I got from my dad - he's working through his old slides and negatives. This was from their first holiday with my older brother, so is sometime in summer 1972 - that's my mum with the pram. I expect he'll have lots more Llandudno shots as he works his way through the stack.
Thanks for the identification of the street - the church(?) on the right seems to have gone now from what I can see on google earth - is that correct?
-
Looking forward to see what other Llandudno shots you may have.
Yes, the Church was replaced by a block of flats not that long ago.
-

I can make out a Ford Corsair and a Triumph Herald. (Or was it a Vitesse?) :)

Its a Herald 1200 (small number plate lamp) also, Mini, Hillman Avenger, Ford Anglia 105E, Ford Corsair (something odd on the roof, is it a Canoe?) possibly a Ford Escort mk1 with a Ford Anglia or Cortina estate behind it. I think there is a Ford Escort mk1 behind the Herald.
Great pic by the way, very interesting $cool$
-
Great pic--brings back memories-- I learned to drive with my Dad in a Corsair( CWT 478B)- no wonder I can drive most things-- that was a lumbering thing-no power steering either. He used to sit with a walking stick and if I didn't lift my foot off the clutch he would prod it with the stick !! Hell I feel old !

Did you put the pic under a microscope? ???
-
Sort of, I went to the Flickr page and looked at the largest size image and all becomes clear! I also used to own many Heralds and Vitesses and many other classic cars too ^*^0
-
Here's some Mk1 Cortina's and an Escort in the old coach park off Conway Road, near the Council Field football ground.
The people pictured were all local footballer's.
-
Is that the local Nick in the background?
-
From left, we have the Tudno Castle hotel, then Broadway Hotel, then Mostyn Estates offices in the smaller building on the right.
-
Yes - I can see it now!

Not sure what his name is Yorkie. :P

Apart from in 2011 ..... You are stood in the middle of the road !!!! (Niggle Niggle)
-
I'm working my way through a batch of old slides purchased a a boot sale years ago, this is the only one of Llandudno so far, from 1964!

Nice find. Was the West Shore Cafe there back then? I can see what looks like some sort of building at extreme right but the present cafe looks to date from the 1970s.
-
I worked in a caravan for Richie Jones on the West Shore in the 60's. Selling ice creams and Chris Griffiths hired out deck chairs. That was back in the days of sand dunes, no car park or cafe. Don't know when the cafe was built.

The old farm on Bodnant Road?
-
Penrhyn Old Hall ?
-
We've talked about this one before and the conclusion was it was the Mountain View in Mochdre.
-
Yes, it's the Mountain View in Mochdre and all the buildings are still there, all that's gone is the Ivy on the side of the pub.
-
This is the same view today:
-
An old one from Church Walks............
-
A shot from the Orme looking down onto West Shore :)
-
You can see the ornamental archway that used to be between the Parade and the Queen Victoria on Church Walks. $good$

You can also see the old market hall in Gloddaeth Ave prior to the Palladium, the gasworks, Cwm Howard farm, and if you click the postcard to enlarge it, you can see that the crater in the side of Bryniau (Cwm Mountain) had not been quarried out at that time.
Suberb postcard Jack. :)
-
It's fascinating looking at all the little buildings tucked away "inside" the big parades. Thanks, Jack.

Postcard not in the best condition but interesting nonetheless :)

It was part of the Craigside Hydro, a large hall used for many things over the years including ( I think) roller skating and indoor tennis courts.

A fantastic building, and one that should have been saved.
