Post by: Ian on January 22, 2011, 08:51:16 am
This topic will show the most recent recommendations of local traders by Which? members and our very own recommendations. Folk are also invited to post reviews of the work done, to which I can then link from this post.

Hi - hope this is in the right place !

I will require a plumber/gas fitter very shortly in the Llandudno (Great Orme) area.

I need two new radiators fitting downstairs and the gas fire in my front lounge needs re-connecting ( I could smell gas and so British Gas capped off the pipe for me, although they could detect no leak !)

Any referrals would be greatly appreciated
(Ideally I'd like the work done next week, whilst I'm off work - I know that's hghly unlikely but you don't get if you don't ask !!) Cheers ...(tried a smiley here but obviously didn't work !)

I've said it before ... and I'll say it again.

Brian Thomas is the man .... (he's in the book)  he lives on the Great Orme, Llwynon Road, and not only is he a great plumber / gas fitter,  he is the all-round greatest guy who ever lived.     Don't tell him I said that!

I've got a lot of moss growing on the north facing roof of my house and need someone to remove it as I'm not going up there myself!
Can anyone recommend some one who does that type of work?

By the way - is there a Thanks "button" on here or similar?
(Like you get on some forums, if you get good advice, etc. No probs if not, I just wondered.)

Is moss a problem, really? I used to have loads on my old house and the only difference it made was that you maybe had to clear out the gutters more often. Birds like taking it to line their nests.

Besides looking ugly it's not really a problem but it does trap water which over a long time can wear concrete tiles in particular.

We have quite a bit of moss on our roof too and we were advised to leave it to avoid further problems.

By the way Fester - I've not got the thumbs up smiley that you posted above (and I can't get any of them to work that I have got, not sure what I'm doing wrong!)  $thanx$ (Actually I think I've sussed it - well it showed up in my preview anyway !)  ;D ;D

It's also necessary to leave a space after your last letter before inserting a smiley and a good idea to put the larger ones about three return/enter-spaces below.  Stops the line formatting getting messed up.

Is there any place in Llandudno that someone can recommend for ear piercing.   Preferably someone who will do it whilst I wait.

Never had an ear pierced but I would guess that "while you wait" is the only way to do it! My daughter had her's done in the Victoria Centre about 10 years ago but I'm not sure if the shop is still there.

As it happens it was for a re-pierce for my wife as she has not worn ear rings for a long time.  But luckily she tried to put her old sleepers in and they went through without problems.  That's saved a few bob!   ¢¢##

That's pretty awful Mike but my earlier posting has gone mossing so I'm going to post it again!

I was able to find a firm in Anglesey  and 3 of them worked very hard for about 7 hours clearing the moss. They arrived on time and started work straight away scraping the moss off, then pressure washing the roof before finally spraying some solution on it to stop the moss coming back.  They tidied up afterwards and I had two very heavy sacks of moss that required two people to lift.
The result was an excellent job well done and very reasonably priced by Care and Repair  (Prop  Mr Anthony Evans)  Tel 01248 489108

I don't think so Yorkie, the firm is from Llangefni in Anglesey.

I still can't see any problem with moss on the roof, (just keep it cleaned out of the gutters) I would think that operatives walking about on the tiles would be likely to cause more harm than good by cracking them
Title: Re: Which? Local and other recommended traders in the area
Post by: Hugo on April 04, 2011, 12:29:31 pm
They actually did crack two tiles but the firm is an established roofing firm and immediately replaced the  cracked tiles with two new ones.
In fact they did an inspection of the roof before they commenced work and found a tile that had been cracked by someone who had been on the roof previously and didn't own up at the time.

Yes, I should think it provides good insulation in the winter.

Garden clearance?

I got two quotes to remove approx 1 skip load of mixed soil, wood and household goods.
The first from a long time established local rubbish removal man who said he would not be beaten on price, and a quote from 'Bob a Job'........who was £100 cheaper!

Guess who got the job?

'Bob a Job', great price, great service, and left the place spotless.

Could anyone recommend someone to remove a wasp nest from our roof?

Phoned the council but they seem quite expensive considering in some areas the pest control departments do it for free!  :(

How much do the Council charge now? It was £30 when I had one removed a few years ago.

I'm sure someone can do it at a reasonable price.  Just make sure you don't get stung!    _))*

You can, of course, do it yourself with a spray.

Don't fancy attempting it myself, I was stung by one of 'em this morning and now have a big swollen foot and its soooo painful !  :'(

The council want £48.00 and they state it could be upto 5 days (and they only attend in the evening after 5pm for some reason ! )

See this article, it happened only this week..

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-14555483 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-14555483)

Do not attempt to remove them yourself.
I bet the lady in this article wish she had paid the £48.
If you are in pain and the swelling is serious, then please don't wait, seek medical assistance.

I don't know about the after 5pm bit, but if you do it yourself with one of the wasp nest destroyer sprays, the guidelines say it is best when it's dark - I think the theory is that all the wasps will be in the nest and not flying in and out.

Thanks Fester, that's scary stuff ! I think I'll leave it to the professionals.

I just think its a bit costly as a friend has just had one removed recently by their council pest control for free !

Post by: Yorkie on August 19, 2011, 09:34:39 am
If one does a DIY job it is correct to do it after the little blighters have settled down to bed.  The other thing is do not remove the nest.  Wasps will not return to a "dead" nest, but if you remove it new wasps will soon construct another.      ££$
