A lot of flooding in the Conwy Valley today! We got as far as Trefriw but the road to Betws y Coed was closed.
The bus just got through!

That section of road, just past Trefriw, is the lowest point on the B5106. It's where they had to use helicopters to rescue some genius motorists a couple of years ago.

A lot of water at Trefriw!

Today even with the 'road closed' signs people were attempting to get through! the bus went through very slowly but must have gone past the signs! &shake&

M.E. did the new flood defences manage to keep the water out of the houses in Trefriw? When we were walking from Llanrwst to Trefriw recently on the flood banking alongside the Afon Conwy we spoke to a couple of Dwr Cymru lads who were checking the sluicegates etc. to the west of the village, and they said that the new defences should be able to prevent property damage and manage the excess water so that just the fields flooded. A lot of work had been done on the Gower Road from Trefriw towards the chain bridge at Llanrwst with massive earth banks being constructed.
-
I don't know is the honest answer, I was not aware of any flooded properties, going back there this morning for another look at the Fairy Falls, it's a lovely location!
-
ME, if you're in that area then the Mares Tails waterfall near Gwydir Castle is worth a visit as they are quite spectacular.
-
Happy New Year to you all. M.E., the road closed signs you refer to are a permanent fixture, opened by some water board official, but often neglected to close after the water returns to the river. The majority of drivers, especially in flood conditions, are local and know the road and its high and low points very well. Having worked in Llanrwst for 20 or 30 years on and off and lived there for around 8, I count myself as one of them.
From the Trefriw side of the river you can see the whole stretch of road. I have driven along there when the road closed signs were visable many, many times ---- and almost daily in a bus. Mike
-
I didn't take a picture of the signs, but they were the folding sort, blocking the left hand side of the road, floods very much lower today!
-
I think ME means the signs were at Trefriw, as the road was impassable past there. The signs Mike are referring to are by Gwydir Castle, a mile or so further along the road.
-

Yes, those are the ones I saw.

The Estuary pub (aka the Conwy Vale) in Glan Conwy is no more :'(.
Punch Taverns sold it to a developer who promptly, and with very little warning, sent in the demolition people. The final part of the building went down yesterday. Someone once told me it used to be one of the busiest pubs in North Wales, back in the days when some areas were "dry" on Sundays it was the most westerly pub that opened so it used to attract coachloads of punters from what is now Gwynedd (however this is well before my time so it may not be true).
-
Yes, it's a great shame but if people don't use it, then it's bound to happen. I haven't been there in about 5 years, had a lovely meal there as I recall.
I think the Tal Y Cafn Hotel (also boarded up and for sale) is a much better proposition for anyone thinking of buying a pub in that area.
-
When I was a teenager 50 years ago, Denbighshire (where the Vale was) and Caernarfonshire were dry so we would go by train to Rhyl for a drink on the Sunday.
Although the pubs were dry in Denbs and Caerns some clubs were still able to serve alcohol but I couldn't go in them for fear of my Dad finding out as I was under 18 at the time!
-
Going back even further in time, all Wales dry, coach trips on a Sunday used to go to just past the railway bridge in Saltney by Chester. Two pubs there just about in England mike
-

The Ferry, over the bridge from Tal-Y-Cafn gone. The Estuary, at Glan Conwy gone. The Tal-Y-Cafn boarded up. Not a good time to think of investing in a Pub with a river view on the Conwy. Z**
-
..now that any competition has gone, you mean? ;)
-
With a decent chef and a good manager the Tal-Y-Cafn could do very well. It's worth remembering that people are prepared to travel quite a distance once they find a place that serves good food at a decent price. That's how the Maenan Abbey has done so well, and continues to do well. The Tal-Y-Cafn is also situated rather nicely, with a train station next to it, good views if they re-jigged the interior and a reasonable distance from the three main towns. In the right hands it could be a little gold mine, I suspect.
-
Ian, that also holds true for The Groes Inn, people travel a long way for that hostelry too.
It's over-rated in my experience. Each to their own.
-
The Tal y Cafn has more ups and downs over the last ten years than anywhere. All due to either very good or terrible management.
There have been very, very good landlords swinging straight away to young brewery managers who hadn't got a clue.
-

You have to ask why the very good landlords didn't stay on if the Tal-y-Cafn was such a good business proposition. It’s just like everywhere else, country pubs no matter how well run, don't seem to be viable. Obviously one or two will buck the trend I'm please to say, but for the majority their day is done. ZXZ
-
From the food point of view, probably the best run period was when two men ran it. They left to take over another place, The Hawk and Buckle in Llannefyd. The reason they gave was because it had more rooms for letting out overnight.
However a young husband and wife team ran it for a time around five years ago and they did everything possible to drum up trade. And I do mean everything.
But they spent a lot of money on the property and rebuilt the carpark. Only my guess but I would say they threw too much money at it, and the profits were not enough

I went there a couple of times before it closed, it was a bit hit & miss. You need to be consistently good to successfully operate a business in that sort of location. The Groes Inn does very well, though, so no reason why the Tal Y Cafn can't do just as well, especially since it is on a far busier road.
-

I completely agree with you Mike. She who must be obeyed says “Everything the business needs must be paid for from earnings of the business”. It might take longer to do it that way but you don’t end up losing what you have, due to over extending yourself, on what are normally wildly overoptimistic expectations. Her well thought-out reasoning has kept us solvent for the last 16 years whilst at the same time going through 5 sets of neighbours.
-
Wise words there. Same situation here. We are the longest staying incumbents of our road, in our trade that is !

John and David did a great job at The Lion in Gwytherin, then the Lord Newborough and the Tal Y Cafn. They were always packed when we went there for a meal. I'm sure that they are doing the same at the Hawk and Buckle too.
-
Now that is what might be described as an old fashioned outlook on how to run a business. Completely went out of fashion around 5/10 years ago. After the financial shake ups of the last year or two I reckon it might very well be very much back in fashion now. Mike
-
Basic common sense economics never change Mike. It's just that there are more devious, double dealing, greed motivated, people out there now, all devising more intricate ways than ever to steal your money and sadly I include our National Government amongst them. Take for instance David Camerons latest blunder. He's come back from Europe with a great big smile because he has managed to cut the EU's Budget to 908bn. What he failed to tell you is that our National contribution to that 908bn will increase because part of getting that deal was to reduce our hard won rebate. As Del Boy would say the man and his Chancellor are a pair of Plonkers. $angry$

that looks lovely ,how would we get to the falls as havent heard of it. after 40years living in the area.... :)
-
Linda, the easiest way I can describe it is:- from Gwydr Castle take the main road to Trefriw and after about 150 yards on your left you will see a wooden gate that goes into the public car park of the Wood Mill.
Go into the car park and take the path on the right going upwards after about 50 yards you will see the waterfall. Well worth the visit and I hope that you enjoy it.
-
There's also a nice little man made waterfall lower down than the Mares Tails one, it'll be nice if you see both of them.

It would seem that we're not the only people who consider the Tal Y Cafn Hotel a good bet:
http://www.northwalespioneer.co.uk/news/120605/conwy-valley-coaching-house-redeveloped-as-a-bar-and-restaurant.aspx (http://www.northwalespioneer.co.uk/news/120605/conwy-valley-coaching-house-redeveloped-as-a-bar-and-restaurant.aspx)
A CLOSED Conwy Valley coaching house is to be redeveloped as a bar and restaurant.
Plans have been submitted to renew the Tal y Cafn Hotel by a North Wales property development group, which will see the tavern turned into a restaurant.
The pub, which closed in early 2011, was built in the 16th century and served as an inn and coach house for travellers crossing at the nearby ferry.
Developers Edwards Property Management (EPM) and Castell Developments, based in Colwyn Bay, acquired the pub in 2011, and have been drafting plans.
These include a new roof structure, a new layout for the car park and other alterations to bring it back into use as a restaurant and public house.
John Sanderson, development manager for Castell Developments, said: “We're looking at extending the building and raising the height of the roof, but it's fairly minimal in terms of development.
“Historically, it had a very good food trade, and it's well-remembered in the Conwy area. That's why we want to get it back.”
-
Let’s keep our fingers crossed Dave and hope it’s a successful re-development ZXZ
-
I hope so, it's certainly an eyesore at the moment.
-
Some good coverage for our area on both the BBC and ITV News today.
In the Conwy Valley, it showed the construction of a large new 'underground' reservoir, by Dwr Cymru.
It looks very impressive, and the project will be complete this year.
It is the size of 10 Olympic size swimming pools, and is designed to guarantee water supply to the Llandudno and Colwyn Bay areas in times of hot weather or drought.
-
It isn't really that much underground at the moment. Looks suitably enormous from the road leading up from Black Cat to Llanwrst road. The major road works in the A470 just before Glan Conwy are where the output will Join the mains.
-
Correct Ian, it is fully exposed whilst being constructed on two levels, then it will be 'roofed' and grassed over.

This is something of a cautionary tale, but for all using gas it's worth reading.
About three weeks ago an activities centre on the side of Crafnant was being given a routine inspection by the warden. When he entered the main building, he smelt gas, rather strongly. Knowing about the dangers fo switching on lights, he stayed well away from any and made his way into the kitchen, where the smell seemed strongest. He opened the oven door and there was an explosion and fireball. He suffered 15% burns and was taken from Llandudno A & E to Glan Clwyd, who then sent him to Whiston Burns unit, where he remained for ten days. He's still experiencing immense pain when trying to move.
Obviously, everyone was keen to know what provided the source of ignition, since the leak was traced to a flexible hose connection at the rear of the cooker, but no obvious catalyst for the explosion was found. Then they looked up and found the permanently-on fly zapper. The conclusion is that because Propane is heaver than air, a dense layer of the stuff would have built up near the floor and not reached the zapper. However, when the warden entered the kitchen, he agitated the gas simply by moving through it and opening the oven door probably provided sufficient agitation to cause the gas to reach the zapper. If a fly - possibly following the warden in - was zapped at that point, then the spark would have been enough. He's lucky to be alive, because the explosion lifted the roof of the place.

Smelling gas is an interesting, and often confusing situation to find oneself in.
When I was having my (nightmare) extension built, we could often smell gas and the (rogue) builders kept assuring me that all was well. Sometime later, worried by the continued smell, I called the emergency gas number and to cut a long story short, the builders were criminally negligent, we were lucky not to be killed, and they were lucky not to be banged up in prison.
Sometime later, I smelled gas, had it checked out, and was told by the technician that it was just my boiler firing up and it was normal. Fair enough.
One night last week, we were sat outside The Gresham Bar waiting for DaveR, and once again I smelled Gas, quite strongly for a few minutes. I reported it to the barman, who shrugged his shoulders and was not too interested.
How is one to know when an incident of smelling gas is crucial, compared to one that isn't?
One's LIFE can depend on the answer to that.
I have posted on this Forum before about the GAS SAFE sticker on plumbers vans. Many have one, but many of them are fraudulent and criminal.... as there is NO REGISTRATION NUMBER beneath the sticker. That number is the certification they need to operate legally.
Take heed of this, as many GAS SAFE plumbers in the Llandudno area, are not what they seem. :o :o
-
There are also some Gas Safe Heating Engineers who are less than honest when it comes to changing parts that do not need changing. Unfortunately Joe Public generally has no idea of what's wrong with his system and can be bamboozled by any unscrupulous operator. These operators, be they large or small, are generally well qualified but just choose to want to make the quick Buck at the expense of the punter. :rage:
-
Always ask to see a Gas Safe ID Card.

How is one to know when an incident of smelling gas is crucial, compared to one that isn't?
One's LIFE can depend on the answer to that.
I was involved in a gas explosion many years ago and that's left me with a life-long wariness of gas. This incident was Propane related and the smell added to propane is very strong, for good reason. But if you can smell it at all it can ignite, so my solution if I smell it is to get out, fast, leaving all the doors and windows I can reach on the way wide open, and head for the tank, where I turn it off, then wait - for a long time :-)
However, here's an interesting anecdote. Our house is fed from a standing Propane tank that holds about 2000 litres of the stuff. It's a good distance from the house itself but a few years ago it ran out. The way I knew it had run out was the incredibly pungent smell of Gas around the tank. And the fact that the stove wouldn't light :-X . We called the Gas people in, and the chap who came, after testing all the piping, etc., told us that when the tank was nearly empty this smell would then somehow make its way outside the tank. So, essentially, what he was saying was that the smell was because the added olfactory chemicals could escape when the gas couldn't. In fact, I think he was talking nonsense and that we'd actually had a leak from the outside pipework connections. He'd done a 'routine' tightening of all the joints, and that had probably cured the thing, which - meanwhile - had lost quite a lot of gas.
In Scotland, a couple of years ago, a factory reliant on tanked gas suffered an explosion which killed two men. The subsequent investigation revealed that the pipes from the tank had been laid beneath the concrete floor of the factory and the concrete mix had eventually corroded the pipes until they'd perforated.

On Tuesday we were driving towards Llanrwst when a steam locomotive, pulling seven coaches, passed us heading the same way. We managed to make it to Llanrwst station (the crossover) to see it come in. Called the Welsh Highland Explorer it had clearly been hired for the day and was full of enthusiasts. Wonderful seeing a steam loco on that track.

For regular travellers on the A470 between Llanrwst and Glan Conwy news that the current roadworks between Glan Conwy and Bodnant are only the start of the bigger improvement project slated to start sometime this year probably won't be welcome.
The WA (whose web page on road schemes is singularly uninformative and hasn't been updated since 2010) state that "a scheme is starting in 2014 covering a length of 3.2 km running towards the coast between the road just to the North of the Maenan Abbey and finishing at a property called 'Dyto'". For three years there's been a test bed piece of road in the lowest-lying section, which can be seen from the train but not from the present road route. This was constructed to test the viability of taking out the awkward 'dog-leg' turn at the end of the narrower section of road running North from the Maenan before making a sharp right turn, followed by a less sharp but potentially more dangerous left. The test bed can be seen clearly on Google Earth at W 3 49'30" and N 53 11'49.92'.
[smg id=3255]
Earlier in February large numbers of trees were felled in the land immediately adjacent to the present road and the railway track, effectively commencing the process of widening the present road and creating a wider, smoother run, which will cross behind the current caravan parking area, seen on the right of the picture above.
It's likely that most of the scheme will not affect the current road, but the section to the South, with the first sharp right hand turn runs very close to the railway line, so that is likely to cause some issues.

Another picture that I can't see, even on an updated iPad. :(

That's interesting, I had no idea that test section of road was there. I wonder how susceptible it will be to flooding?
Givent the re-routing of the A470, not a surprise that the Maenan Abbey Hotel is up for sale!

Well, can't be any worse than the current work in Glan Conwy.
-
I remember this little stretch of a trial road being built around about five years ago. Driving a coach every day along that road the height of the coach allowed me a good view (thought the driver should have his eye on the road Ha Ha).
I couldn't make out what was going on. All I knew was a constant stream of lorries taking road ballast through a narrow entrance just north of the houses. And doing what? I couldn't figure it out.
By chance a couple of years later a passenger on the train which goes right alongside it started talking about it and told me that they were placing this rubble onto the marsh land and then measuring how much it sank and how fast. He then laughed and said it had gone down two feet in the first six months, so they gave the idea up. Mike P.S. Sale of the Maenan Abbey. I don't see why these road works would present a problem. Its well away from there.
-
P.S. Sale of the Maenan Abbey. I don't see why these road works would present a problem. Its well away from there.
That's the point, Mike. Once completed, Maenan Abbey's passing traffic will decrease by about 99%.
-
That's the point, Mike. Once completed, Maenan Abbey's passing traffic will decrease by about 99%.
No, it won't, Dave; the Abbey is on the 'new' stretch of road that will connect with the works, so there'll be no change in the volume of passing traffic.
-
Oh yes, I see what you mean, I was thinking it was the stretch nearer Llanrwst. I've attached a plan showing the new route.
I've always thought that the A470 would benefit immensely from a slight widening along most of its length in the Conwy Valley - most accidents occur when there is someone overtaking and a car comes the other way. The oncoming car has nowhere to go to avoid being hit by the overtaking car, a wider road would give enough room to avoid an accident.
-
The stretch from the Abbey to Llanrwst is done, so this is the next piece in the jigsaw.
-
Lets hope the Llanrwst By-Pass isn't too far off either *cycle*
-
Not even slated.
-
Not even slated.
North Wales is really being treated like a doesn't matter Back Water, when it comes to the allocation of resources by the WAG, for infrastructure projects. Remember the A55 was funded by the EEC, so that the Irish road traffic could get access to the English Motorway system, not for the benefit of the people who actually live and work here. &shake&
-
As to the Llanrwst bypass, Llanrwst must be the only town in the whole country which, when asked around 15 years ago "Do you want a bypass" loudly said NO WE DON'T.
So, they didn't get one. There were plans, of course there were usual objections, but the whole body of opinion in Llanrwst was leave it as it is.
Not so sure they would say the same now, 15 years later

A friend sent me this short u-tube video of the way that the heavy industrial plant was transported up the Valley line to the Tan-y-Grisiau power station in 1962 which shows the methods used in those days (i.e. no " 'elf and safety!").
Those who know the area might find it very interesting, and also the mechanical-minded will appreciate the efforts of those involved. The only snag is that I always always seem to have a problem inserting a link onto the Forum so apologies if it doesn't work, it worked on an earlier e-mail I sent. If it doesn't come out perhaps some kind Forum member will post some info on how to post links etc., and what I am doing wrong! Thankyou.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFqEelJgvI0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFqEelJgvI0)
-
The link doesn't seem to work, Gwynant.
I remember this happening - it was on a Sunday. The transformer was to be installed at the Ffestiniog Pumped-Storage scheme.
Footage also exists on one of the British Transport Films' series produced by the BFI.
-
Your link wasn't in the right format, Gwynant. The easiest way is to get the video up in your browser, then go to the top URL bar and select that, then copy it. You then paste it into the post you're making. I've cut and pasted a link using that method, but it's not your link. If you post the email your friend sent you in here without changing anything then I can sort it for you.
-
Apologies, once again I fail with a link, but I don't what I am doing wrong. The video and link was taken from the North Wales Coast Railway-Notice Board News web page (Week-Commencing 16th Feb 2015) and the film was made by the British Transport Films. There is a scene on the platform at Blaenau when an elderly lady walks past a taut straining wire hawser connected to a winch on a Pickfords tractor with her shopping bag without a glance, modern day safety "jobsworths" would have fainted!
-
Thanks for your advice Ian, I'll try again.

I have just watched it Gwynant no trouble at all, quite interesting. ME will like it no doubt
-
That was great to watch! Thanks Gwynant! The building of that power station meant that the old route of the Festiniog Railway was flooded by the new lake. At the time the power company never thought the railway would be rebuilt, a big court case followed which the railway won! The FR built a deviation starting with the spiral loop at Dduallt with the line at a higher level and the reached Blaenau Ffestiniog in 82 so all was well in the end!

Gwynant , back in 1981 in the middle of the night, we had the misfortune to be called out to a Shell Tanker laying off the Bonny Roads, offshore Port Harcourt , Nigeria. We had been tasked to take our Doctor to the Ship and recover a Lascar Seaman, who had just had his left leg severed above the knee by a straining hawser that parted just as he walked by.
“Job’s worth”, bring them on, the more the merrier. Notice how the R.N.L.I. now keep the kids away from their Boat when it’s being recovered?

“Job’s worth”, bring them on, the more the merrier. Notice how the R.N.L.I. now keep the kids away from their Boat when it’s being recovered?
Blongbe, I certainly wasn't trying to portray the health and safety rules of today as unnecessary in any way, especially concerning wire hawsers and heavy plant. I was simply trying to point out the differences between the methods of working between now and 50 years ago. Perhaps in retrospect "jobsworths" was the wrong term, apologies.

Sorry Gwynant, no criticism implied. I was just stressing how dangerous hawser under tension can be. $good$

I had a drive through the Conwy Valley on Thursday and from Capel Gwydir I could see the reconstruction work going on on the railway line to Blaenau Ffestiniog. It's very close to the river in places so it's obviously going to have ongoing problems but I wonder if Saturday's torrential downpour had any effect on the work already carried out.

Very scenic indeed Hugo, but for the best views, go before there are to many leaves on the trees. Other wise most of the journey is spent looking at a wall of green.
-
Yes, that's the best time to really appreciate the beauty of the line, there were dozens of Geese and Ducks on the river bank as we drove past.
The late Autumn is also good to see the changing colours on the trees and the Lledr Valley is particularly nice at that time of year

I've often thought in the past that the section of line in your photos (which is one of the sections that gets damaged in every flood) would benefit from several more large culverts built to direct water underneath the line, rather than allowing it to flow over it.

I stopped at the lay by near Glan Conwy to take some photos. It's a great place to stop at, as the views are superb across the river but don't look down over the stone wall because it's becoming a mecca for fly tipping.
Because it's a bit secluded there, the scumbags can go there at night and chuck the stuff over the wall without getting caught.

Glan Conwy garden centre unveils lodge plan as supermarket competition hits business.
A popular plant nursery wants to expand with luxury lodges offering horticultural themed holiday on the site.
Tal Goed Nurseries, near Glan Conwy , has been running for more than 25 years but has seen its turnover fall since 2009.
The owners blame low cost competition, particularly from supermarkets.
Now they have identified an opportunity to develop 27 holiday lodges at the site to operate alongside the existing garden centre and the Planters cafe businesses.
They say it would secure the businesses at the location - securing and creating 27 jobs.
In the planning statement, they said: “In order to address a declining financial viability and to inject value into the business, the proprietors have commissioned the production of plans to develop lodge accommodation on under-utilised land at Tal Goed.

The picture below from the BBC https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-51428651 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-51428651) reminded me of a previous flood in the same spot, I am guessing late 80's, there is a stream, a few yards behind were the photo was taken,, that goes under the road, through a small culvert, which is prone to getting blocked, last time a mattress traveled down stream and completely closed the culvert, causing substantial property damage and subsidence, it was a simple job to clear, if the same thing has happened again, someone needs to be held accountable.

An iconic bridge and a landmark cafe become a colourful beacon of hope in honour of NHS heroes and key workers last night.
The sixth consecutive week of the national Clap for Carers tribute saw Pont Fawr and the Tu Hwnt i'r Bont cafe in Llanrwst lit up in rainbow colours in a spectacular display of appreciation.
Technicians from North Wales Sound & Lighting spent hours preparing the colourful light show which took centre stage in the town's appreciation for workers fighting the coronavirus pandemic last night.

FIONA Bruce and the Antiques Roadshow team have been filming at Bodnant Garden, valuing family heirlooms and missing masterpieces.
The show, which has been running for more than four decades, was filmed on Wednesday, September 2 and Thursday, September 3 on a closed set with a small invited audience only, to ensure the safety of guests, production and the wider public.
Two programmes have been filmed at Bodnant Garden, which will be broadcast early next year.
Presenter Fiona Bruce, who is filming her 13th series of Antiques Roadshow, said: "Normally we welcome around 5,000 people to each Antiques Roadshow, but of course in these extraordinary times we will have to do things very differently.

A NORTH Wales National Trust site is to make its big screen debut in a forthcoming movie.
Bodnant Garden was a key filming location for The Secret Garden, a Sky Original released in cinemas and on Sky Cinema on October 23, starring Julie Walters and Colin Firth.
This October half-term, visitors to the National Trust garden near Conwy can explore the magical locations, which drew film-makers to North Wales and enjoy a host of wildlife-themed family activities which recreate the magic and capture the imaginations of children and adults alike.
Although local lockdown restrictions in Conwy mean that the garden is open for local residents only, families can still enjoy all things autumnal through the new Secret Garden Scavengers Hunt.

Farmers faced with a three-year wait to fix breached river defences organised it themselves for a tenth of what it would have cost an environment watchdog.
The Tan Lan embankment, designed to repel flood waters from the River Conwy, was breached during Storm Ciara in February this year.
It was protecting adjoining agricultural land, six homes, businesses including one with 49 caravans and the main A470 trunk road through the Conwy Valley between Llanrwst and Trefriw.
When it emerged it could take Natural Resources Wales (NRW) three years and £150,000 to fix it, local farmers took it into their own hands and got the bank restored themselves – at a cost of £15,000.

Conwy Valley holiday village 'that deserves TLC' to be redeveloped in £1m investment
Trem Gwydir, which has Snowdonia views, has been bought by new owners and work is underway to revamp the site
Llanrwst is set to get a major tourism boost later this year with a significant redevelopment of the Trem Gwydir holiday village now underway.
The holiday village, which is located in the centre of the historic Conwy Valley market town, has been open for decades but has needed new investment.
ADVERTISING
Offered for sale in July 2017, it has been purchased by family-owned business Actually Property, which will also operate the holiday park. The sale, worth £625,000, completed last month.
Now the site will now be transformed with significant capital spend, taking the total investment to well in excess of a million pounds.
The 24-lodge holiday park occupies a prime location in the centre of Llanrwst, and comes with scenic views of the River Conwy to the Gwydir Forest and Snowdonia mountains beyond.
The lodges sit in landscaped grounds, with views across the river to the Tu Hwnt i’r Bont tearooms and the town’s picturesque arched stone bridge Pont Fawr – one of the most photographed places in Wales.

VISITORS have been asked to stay away from a lake in a Conwy village and its surrounding area while the body of water is checked for blue-green algae.
Natural Resources Wales (NRW) is to take test samples in Llyn Crafnant, near Trefriw, for the algae, which produces toxins and can pose threats to the health of people and animals when exposed to it in large amounts.
Ross Morgan, town clerk at Llanrwst Town Council, said: “As town clerk and administrator to the Crafnant Trust, I received a message this morning (Monday, September 6) expressing a concern about the possible appearance of blue-green algal bloom at Llyn Crafnant.
“A second message from NRW indicated that they had received a report and aimed to take samples today to test for the presence of such algae.
“As a precautionary measure, I visited Crafnant early this morning to put up tape and warning notices asking visitors to stay away from the lake and watercourses around the lake and to keep their pets on a lead and away from the water.
“All fishing at the lake is currently suspended.
“Urgent information messages were put on the town council’s Facebook page and that for the village of Trefriw.
“I must stress that, at this time, we have no information on the analysis of algal growth at the lake or confirmation that blue green algae is present.
“Our actions are purely precautionary in the best interests of all visitors to Crafnant and those who live around the lake.”
A spokesperson for Natural Resources Wales added: "We’re investigating reports of blue-green algae at Llyn Crafnant and will be arranging laboratory analysis to confirm what it is. Can’t confirm as yet." ref pioneer

A LIBRARY has opened with a children’s area and health hub to support physical and mental well-being.
Llanrwst Library has been relocated with a wide range of literature, an exhibition area, flexible space for meetings and activities, and computers and Wi-Fi for public use. Library service will work under a community hub model led by Conwy County Borough Council and partners in the health and third sector.
The relocation from the Plas yn Dre site, which had been used since 1998, follows Welsh Government funding from the Transforming Towns investment programme. The local authority said it would cost £90,000 to repair the former building’s roof, while the relocation was expected to cost £373,800.
The former site had been well-used, with more than 35,000 book loans each year, but the council proposed a move to the ground floor of the 2007-built Glasdir after it fell out of use last year.

Earthquake shakes sofas, wakes dogs and causes 'big rumble' in Snowdonia
Residents in the Conwy Valley heard a 'strange' sound on Sunday night and the British Geological Survey confirmed the earth really did move a little bit. (the actual headline took me a minute to work out)
Sunday night TV was interrupted by a “big rumble sound” that was heard by communities in the Conwy Valley and beyond.
Some people suspected thunder, others put it down to a large passing vehicle or a sonic boom.
However the British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed the area had suffered a mini earthquake measuring 1.0 on the Richter scale.

A historic bridge which was washed away during a massive storm is set to be replaced.
The Miners Bridge was destroyed back in February 2020 when Storm Ciara caused chaos in communities across North Wales.
As the storm raged, the sheer volume of extra water that was sent down the River Llugwy caused it to surge, eventually making its way down to the old Miners Bridge and washing it down river.

It meant there were no points to cross the tributary between Betws-Y-Coed and the Ugly House.
The bridge, best known as being part of the walking route up to Swallow Falls, was reachable just off the A5 outside Betws-Y-Coed.
Having served as a fording spot for well over a millennia, the spot was most frequently used by the quarrymen on their way to the mines of Gwydyr forest.
It is also believed to be the spot the Romans used for crossing the river in times gone by.

I read this article in the Daily Post and found it quite interesting especially for anyone with connections to the Machno Valley. On my Father's side of the family he had connections with both Cwm Penmachno and Penmachno. Cwmpenmachno must have been a busy little community in its time but that all changed after the 1960's

GM Jones built its £1.3m Llanrwst HQ in 2018 backed by £400,000 from the Wales Economic Fund but then ran into financial problems - falling into administration in March 2019.
But now Conwy based Pharma Group Holdings has acquired the sites.
Established in 2005 Pharma Group has interests in the healthcare, food and wellbeing sectors with production and warehousing facilities in Anglesey, Conwy and Pensarn, near Abergele.
The purchase of the Ty Gwyn units follows the recent acquisition of the North Wales Brewery Site where planning permission has been secured for a bottling and product development hub for the Group.
Pharma’s founder and managing director Rhys Owen said: "The Parc Ty Gwyn site is an ambitious investment for the Group providing expansion capacity for our own businesses as well as the possibility of generating rental income through attracting local businesses to occupy surplus office and warehouse space."

I noticed this photo in the NWWN about the snow in Cwmpenmachno in 1953 and the Winters must have been harsh then. The village is situated at the head of a long valley and a narrow lane leads to it from Penmachno.
The houses are mainly terraced and second homes, while the Chapels and other buildings have closed and been converted into private homes

MS for Aberconwy, has announced the launch of an online survey to better understand road safety concerns related to the A470 trunk road.
Having previously been guaranteed by the Welsh Government that there would be a review of the A470 in the next financial year, Mrs Finch-Saunders hopes the survey will help officials to determine the areas of concern.
“I committed to keep a close eye on the promise made in writing by the Deputy Minister to review the A470 from Glan Conwy to Betws-y-Coed.
“To facilitate this work, and with the new financial year fast approaching, I am pleased to launch a new online survey whose responses will help to guide the attention of officials towards sections of concern, ensuring that the suggested improvements are highlighted to the Welsh Government.
“Local residents can be assured that, with the survey responses obtained, I will continue to scrutinise the Deputy Minister should this promised 2022/23 review turn out to be yet another road to nowhere.”
Residents can submit their concerns by heading to janetfinchsaunders.org.uk/A470. www.janetfinchsaunders.org.uk/A470 (http://www.janetfinchsaunders.org.uk/A470).

Surf Snowdonia seeks permission for Spa Dome at hotel
A planning application has been submitted to Conwy Council
The application is a resubmission, following Conwy County Council's planning committee refusing the plans, due to a flood risk.
But the applicant has since undertaken a preliminary assessment by Natural Resources Wales.
The proposal is to erect a 'sun dome' on top of the external deck, resembling a faceted dome. The semi-permanent dome would offer visitors protection from the wind, snow and rain on the hotel's decking area.

Good news, the Towers did a great job for youngsters, good to see it will continue...............
A Snowdonia outdoor activity centre championed by Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge has been rescued.
Active Learning Group, a specialist outdoor education company, has bought The Towers, near Ty Hyll (Ugly House), Betws-y-Coed.
The complex of buildings was used by thousands of children from the English Midlands for almost 60 years before shutting in 2019.

Giant crane lifts new bridge into position to replace historic Snowdonia crossing
The old Miner's Bridge in Betws-y-Coed was washed away in a storm surge two years ago
Construction work is well underway on a modern replacement for a historic bridge that was washed away by storm floods.
The Miner's Bridge was destroyed in February 2020 when Storm Ciara sent a deluge of water down the River Llugwy, a tributary of the River Conwy in Snowdonia.

It's a shame there seems to be a lack of proofreaders for the DP. That article refers to the "old Miner's Bridge in Betws-y-Coed - washed away in a storm surge two years ago" but a storm surge is purely tidal, being an effect of a low pressure storm system raising the normal tidal level.

Rescue plan for Instagram-friendly wobbly bridge in Snowdonia that’s rotting away
For 92 years, Sappers Bridge has been suspended over the River Conwy. By late 2021, however, it had become too dangerous to cross
Since December, however, it has been closed off.
Its timber footplates are rotting away and, last October, some visitors reported at least one suspension cable was snapped at the base.
A sign was erected to warn people of its condition. “We had to cross the bridge to see it,” noted one slightly alarmed visitor.
Conwy Council has now secured finance for repairs. Work is due to begin in April 2022, subject to permissions, and will be carried out in two phases.
Phase one will see all the timbers replaced and deck steelwork repainted.
Further assessments will also be carried out on the bridge in March and the outcome of these will determine what further repairs are required during phase two.
A spokesperson said: “The investigations will include examination of the tower foundations, and specialist metallurgic testing of main cables and hangers.
“We expect the work to take around six weeks and the bridge will then reopen.”

Full planning permission has been sought to demolish a landmark Snowdonia tourist attraction. The Electric Mountain Visitor Centre in Llanberis would be replaced by a car park.
The centre has been closed since late 2018 and has been boarded up and surrounded by a fence. A planned redevelopment of the centre is said to have been hit by "insurmountable challenges" and won't now go ahead.
Electric Mountain, which lies on the banks of Llyn Padarn, and was previously used as a base for tours of Dinorwig Power Station, also had a community space and staged regular exhibitions and other events and also had a shop, information centre and cafe.
First Hydro Ltd submitted an application for planning permission earlier this month and details have now been published on the Gwynedd Council planning portal.
In a covering letter to Gwynedd Council's planning department Howard Jones, of First Hydro, states: "The visitor centre was underused and too large for the range of activities that it accommodated. The building was inefficient and expensive to heat and maintain and many of the building services were approaching the end of their operation life and required replacement. ref DP

The ground may have moved yesterday after an earthquake hit North Wales. It had a magnitude of 1.0 on the Richter scale and happened at 6.43am. The epicentre was located 2km west of Trefriw in Conwy, according to the British Geological Survey, at a depth of 7km.
Other recent earthquakes in the British Isles were recorded at Clodock in Heredfordshire, on March 31 - magnitude 0.5; Mablethrope Lincolnshire, on March 30 - magnitude 1.1; and Morvern, Highland, also March 30 - magnitude 0.6.
The last time an earthquake with a magnitude of 1 struck North Wales was Snowdonia during October 2021. Then a “big rumble sound” was heard by communities in the Conwy Valley and beyond.
Some people suspected thunder, others put it down to a large passing vehicle or a sonic boom. It was recorded at a depth of 6km with the epicentre given as "3km north-north-east of the village of Dolgarrog, Conwy".

Conwy Airbnb host finds unexploded WWII-era bomb in garden
The live device was dug and cleaned by a homeowner who refused to believe it was a bomb
A homeowner had a shock when unearthing an unexploded WWII-era bomb in his garden on Easter Sunday. The device was destroyed this morning in a controlled explosion at a "secure location" in the Conwy Valley.
Dave Dew, 54, refused to believe that what he dug up were the remains of military ordnance. As he lives in a cottage that once served as Trefriw’s smithy, he has a haul of metal finds that are displayed in the room he and wife Sara hire out to Airbnb guests.
He said: “I’ve come across an old tractor engine as well as numerous items discarded by the blacksmith who used to work here. But my wife was worried it could be something more dangerous and she didn’t want it left in the garden just 25ft from the front door.”

Bizarre trophy found on eBay reunited with North Wales owners a century after going missing
Over the years the cup has been bent out of shape - which Llanrwst Rural Show was happy to retain for this weekend's return to action
Thought to date back to before the First World War, it was originally awarded to the overall champion of Llanrwst?s Welsh Black cattle classes. Repolished and mounted on an oak plinth, it will once again be presented to the champion Welsh Black at this year?s show on Saturday, June 25.
As its 45-degree kink has been retained, it will instantly become one of the most distinctive trophies awarded on Britain?s agricultural show circuit. The cup?s ?rediscovery? echoes that of the ?Lost Bard? trophy, which was presented for the first time in 99 years at the 2019 Cerrigydrudion Show after spending six decades in Canada and the USA.

Annual firework display scrapped so money can be used to help those in need
The Rotary Club of Conwy Valley said it would be better to help people through the cost-of-living crisis
A community group are scrapping their plans to hold a fireworks display later this year. Instead, they'll be using the cash to help those in need.
The Rotary Club of Conwy Valley organises the annual Bonfire Night firework display in Llanrwst. However, they have taken to social media with a plan to put the cash set aside for the colourful display into helping those in need locally as the cost-of-living crisis continues.
In a post on their Facebook page, a spokesman said: "As a club, we have thought long and hard about putting on a firework display this November. We are aware that it is something that large parts of the local community look forward to and enjoy, but we felt that spending well in excess of ?4,000 for 15-20 minutes of fireworks was not something that we could do this year and that the money would be better spent being able to offer assistance to those in need in the Conwy Valley in what is promising to be even tougher economic times for many."

A stopover campervan site in a North Wales village has been blocked by planners. Riverside Motors in Glan Conwy wanted to place 20 motorhomes on its sales area at its site next to the A470 and Afon Conwy - later revising this to 12 spaces.

North Wales Police are hoping to relocate their station in Llanrwst ? and have reassured the public they are not reducing the number of staff based at the station. Police officers will move from the current station on Heol Yr Orsaf Station Road to the nearby Glasdir building, which is on the same road.
Police and crime commissioner Andrew Dunbobbin has submitted a planning application to Conwy County Council for a change of use of first floor rooms at the Glasdir building from offices to a police station. The new police station would accommodate eight members of police staff and include spaces for five police vehicles.
If the plans get the go-ahead, North Wales Police will lease the building from Conwy County Council. The application suggests the new location will have an outside phone which will link back to the force control room.
"Glasdir's front entrance area will receive North Wales Police lantern and external telephone communication system linked back to the control room,? the application reads. "North Wales Police will enter into a lease with Conwy County Council, and this proposal will allow North Wales Police to remain visible within the Llanrwst community, and it will not impact the number of police officers and police community support officers based at the station.? ref DP

Yet another move! The original police station (and Magistrates' Court) was situated on the corner of School Bank Road on a site now occupied by the Fire Station. This was replaced in the mid 1960s by a new court house and police station in Station Road (by Glasdir) eventually the police moved into shared premises with the Ambulance Service (which seemed to be a converted police house). Now what is left of the police presence is going to Glasdir.

Work is about to start on a major housing development in Conwy. The Maes y Felin scheme in Glan Conwy, close to the A55, will see the construction of 107 energy efficient and hi-tech properties.
Calon Homes, a subsidiary of housing association Cartrefi Conwy and community interest company Creating Enterprise, is developing the project. The development has previously been quoted as a ?25m scheme.
The main contractor for the project is Mochdre-based Brenig Construction - which set up Calon Homes with Creating Enterprise in 2018 but no longer have a stake in the venture.
They are due to start work preparing the site for the development. They said it is expected to support 500 direct and indirect jobs over the course of the project.
Calon Homes have already completed preliminary and investigatory works including wildlife and archaeological surveys in order to discharge relevant planning conditions.
It?s expected that 95 per cent of the people employed on the scheme, supported by the Development Bank of Wales, will be from within a 20 mile radius of the 13-acre site.
The company have also committed to training local apprentices and to use local suppliers wherever possible. The development will comprise two, three and four-bedroom properties and 33 of them will be affordable family homes.

Surf lagoon and Hilton hotel site in North Wales wants new investor after 'unexpected costs'
Adventure Parc Snowdonia wants investor to come on board - and could even sell the site
The owners of a surf lagoon and Hilton hotel want an outside investor to help further develop the park after "unexpected costs". Adventure Parc Snowdonia - initially Surf Snowdonia - opened the UK's first inland surfing lagoon back in 2015.
The site later expanded with a ?16m investment into an Adrenaline Indoors facility as well as a Hilton Garden Inn hotel. Both investments were supported with multi-million pound grants from Welsh Government. {Tax payers}
They say they're proud of what has been achieved at the site but that they've been hit by "big challenges" and "unexpected costs". Adrenaline Indoors opened just months before the Covid pandemic while the surf facility has at times been impacted by machinery failure that has halted surfing.

NATURAL Resources Wales (NRW) is to start the process of felling diseased larch trees at Miners? Bridge woods near Betws y Coed this month.
An area of the woods covering 5.5 hectares has become infected with phytophthora ramorum and trees will be removed to control the spread of the disease.
Conifers surrounding the infected larch will also be removed to mitigate against crop instability and future storm damage.
In total around 1,400 tonnes of timber will be removed.
The work, which is being carried out under a Statutory Plant Health Notice, will start on September 26 and is expected to last up to nine weeks.
During the work, traffic management will be in operation on a section of the A5 next to the site and a public right of way closure will be in place for the woods to ensure the safety of the public.
This includes restricting access to Miners? Bridge.

Earthquake confirmed in Snowdonia after reports of 'loud bang' and 'rumbling' sound

Doubts have been expressed over whether lighting a 100-yard stretch of road at a cost of more than ?20,000 will be value for money. Local councillors have voiced "concern" over the dark stretch of a road near Betws y Coed in Conwy, but one resident believes the scheme should not be a priority amid a cost of living crisis. {Hear, hear.}
Gareth Jones criticised the purpose and timing of the installation of the streetlights, which are planned for the B5106 approach road at Pentrefelin in Betws y Coed. Mr Jones told North Wales Live: "Conwy Council have tried to defend this spend by arguing that it will encourage more sustainable modes of travel including walking and cycling, although the five street lights will only light up 100 yards of road. Fruit and veg stallholder quits Llanrwst pitch after 40 years over 'street furniture row'
Emyr Owen's Tatws Trading stall on Ancaster Square had been a fixture for decades
A row over street furniture has led to a popular fruit and veg trader quitting a Conwy Valley market after 40 years. Tatws Trading?s stall has been one of the main attractions at Llanrwst Market on Ancaster Square for decades.
The twice-weekly market is organised by Llanrwst Town Council. But it's understood that a row at town council level has caused Emyr Owen of Tatws Trading to give up his Tuesday pitch.
The row is believed to be about shops placing street furniture on the square on market days. After months of complaints, Mr Owen has announced that he will not be returning to the market, despite the popularity of his stall. ?It is sad. We?ve been here a long time,? he said.

Llanrwst: Long-lost chairs returned to castle after 101 years
A long-lost set of chairs have been returned to their castle home 101 years after they were sold at auction.
The 12 walnut seats were carved for the Wynn family of Gwydir Castle in the 17th Century.
The Tudor manor house, in Llanrwst, Conwy county, was sold in 1921 with most of its contents ending up in an English art collection.
The owners have spent almost 30 years restoring the building and looking for the original furniture and fittings.
After buying it in 1994, husband and wife Peter Welford and Judy Corbett managed to locate oak panelling from the dining room in a New York museum warehouse.
They also found its 430-year-old dining table and a 400-year-old chest of drawers.

Anglesey Dr searches for answers over mystery 'man by the lake' painting
He got his hands on the art work during a clear out
The owner of a mystery oil painting has issued an appeal for information about the man at the centre of the striking art work. Dr David Ransome is also offering to give away the stylish artwork for free and wants to find someone with a personal connection to the piece and its unknown subject.
Dr Ransome, formerly of Llanrwst but now living in Holyhead on Anglesey, approached North Wales Live to try to find out more about the impressive and intricate picture.
Scrawled on the back of the canvas are the words 'Llyn Grafnant,' thought to be a mutation of Llyn Crafnant - a lake situated near Llanrwst near the Conwy Valley. A lake is depicted in the painting and can be seen in the top right-hand corner of the piece through the window.

The hall, which is not believed to have been used in several decades, was found on the top floor of the former HSBC bank in Llanrwst, with the new tenants left wondering how the space came to be.

Italianate mansion that's home to renowned gallery up for sale as potential hotel
Ffin Y Parc gallery will continue to operate with plans to move the gallery to a new site in North Wales
An Italianate Victorian mansion that became a renowned gallery in recent years has been placed up for sale. Bryn Derwen - near Llanrwst - is set in 14 acres and was built in the 1880s.
It became a care home but this closed in 2005 and the property and gardens had become overgrown and dilapidated. But the site was bought and transformed by partners Ralph Sanders and Roland Powell.
They turned it into leading art gallery Ffin Y Parc. Now the property has been placed up for sale with Iwan M Williams estate agents. It has a ?1.95m price tag.
Fans of the gallery can be reassured that Ffin y Parc will continue at a new location once the sale is complete. They are looking to take on a townhouse in the centre of Llandudno and focus the business on Welsh art. It is business as usual at the current gallery site while the site is up for sale

Adventure Parc Snowdonia cuts jobs and closes activities amid review of future of surf lagoon
Seasonal and full time team members are losing their jobs as owner 'truly sorry' about wave lagoon problems
A surf lagoon will cut jobs and close activities after a disappointing summer and a review will take place into the site's future. Adventure Parc Snowdonia opened in 2015 - launching the first commercial inland wave lagoon in the world.
But the wave machine has been dogged with mechanical problems. It relaunched this spring after a malfunction last summer but then broke down again in June.
The site - which has had several millions pounds in Welsh Government funding - has built additional facilities like Adrenaline Indoors and offered other watersports on the lagoon. But bosses said revenues had been "significantly lower" than expected this summer.
It also includes the Hilton Garden Inn hotel but that part of the business has traded well this year after initially being closed to house asylum seekers.

The Welsh village loved by visitors but struggling to attract workers
Betws-y-Coed was recently named the best destination in the UK but getting staff in is a more challenging issue
Betws-y-Coed has no problem attracting visitors to the village all year round. In fact it is so popular that it was recently named the best holiday destination in the whole of the UK.
But for some it is a different story when it comes to pulling in workers to help cater for the tourists. One hospitality boss says Brexit and Covid has left him with 25 vacant position at his popular cafe and separate pizza restaurant.
Jacha Potgieter - who runs the Alpine Coffee Shop and Hangin? Pizzeria with his wife Gwynneth - says the stress and hassle of finding workers is leaving him and his workforce of around 50 "tired and drained". He even warned he may give up the cafe because they and the staff were having to work "their asses off".
He has blamed Covid and Brexit for exacerbating existing problems but also says there are people who don't seem to want to work. The village also has a high number of Airbnb and other holiday lets which reduces the local population and potential workforce.

?Welsh Robin Hood? celebrated at new North Wales festival
Three days of activities include medieval banquets, re-enactments and 'choirs of merrymen'
A new festival themed after the Welsh Robin Hood is to launch in the Conwy Valley next month. Medieval tours, banquets and re-enactments are planned as the town of Llanrwst evokes the spirit of Dafydd ap Siencyn.
Much else is in the schedule at the three-day Gŵyl Dafydd ap Siencyn Festival on October 20-22. There?s also live music, forest art and storytelling, even massage therapy and hire of Gravity scooters ? a cross between a bicycle and a scooter. The full schedule is given below.
Elements of the festival will be held at the mile-long Caerdroia Labyrinth in Gwydyr Forest, the largest of its kind in the world. Chair of the event?s organising committee, Cllr Mostyn Jones, said the festival will enable people to follow in the footsteps of one of the area?s most notorious rebels.
?The community has been clear that our town should hold more events, create more activities for young people, and do more to celebrate the best of Llanrwst,? he said. ?I am delighted that we as a town council have been able to work with the community to create a truly unique festival. Three developments that could make 'best destination in the UK' even better
Betws-y-Coed is already much loved but even this stunning village could be improved further
Betws-y-Coed already has the accolade of the 'best holiday destination in the UK'. It is no surprise that the village is much loved, with its grey slate and stone buildings nestled amongst deep green forest.
Its location at the entrance to the rugged mountains of Eryri and the activities, shops and eating places on offer all add to its all-year-round appeal.

NATURAL Resources Wales (NRW) is starting work to fell diseased larch trees at Mynydd Deulyn, in the Conwy Valley..........pioneer
The trees, in a forest block covering 9.5 hectares at Llyn Crafnant near Trefriw, have become infected with Phytophthora ramorum, commonly known as larch disease.
A Statutory Plant Health Notice (SPHN) has been issued, which requires NRW to act within a set period of time to control the disease, which can spread quickly through a woodland or forest, killing whole trees.
Work starts this week, and is set to last three months.
Harvesting operations will take full account of the presence of, and possible impact on any protected species, and their habitat.
Kath McNulty, NRW?s team leader for forest operations in North West Wales, said: ?To comply with the notice, the trees will need to be removed to stop any further spread of the larch disease.
?Due to the location of the site, work requires access management to keep everyone safe and may mean temporary public right of way closures.
?We will work to reduce the impact on the local community wherever possible and no forest operations will take place at weekends.
?Our priority is to keep everyone safe and we are asking members of the public to follow any signage in place during the work.
?We would like to thank everyone in advance for their co-operation.?
Residential, agricultural and third-party accesses will remain open at all times but may be subject to short delays while timber lorries are uplifting.

Castle owners' 'night terrors' every time it rains fearing floods will wash away centuries of Welsh history
The Conwy Valley's Gwydir Castle has a rich and fascinating past - but it's under constant threat
When rain hammers down on its slate tiles at night, Gwydir Castle?s owners lie awake fearing the worst. ?It?s like having night terrors, always wondering if this is the one,? said Judy Corbett. ?Every time you think this is it ? that water will come rushing through the house and we?ll have to start carrying the furniture upstairs.?
If this happens, much more will have to be left behind, including 17th-century wood panelling, leather friezes and ornate carved doorcases. Already, the fabric of the house, near Llanrwst in the Conwy Valley, is under threat from constant flooding. Cellars, often inundated with water 6ft deep, have needed underpinning, while wet and dry rot is a creeping menace.

Study into options for beautiful but problematic bridge hit by 'Mexican standoffs' and truck damage
Welsh Government and Conwy council to work together on finding solutions to issues at Pont Fawr in Llanrwst
Welsh Government and Conwy council have agreed to hold a joint study into options for an historic bridge hit by "Mexican standoffs" and damage from trucks. Pont Fawr in Llanrwst is one of the most beautiful bridges in Wales but its narrow single lane means it can be impractical in an era of high traffic levels and large HGVs.
The crossing over the Afon Conwy can see standoffs between drivers crossing from opposites sides. It has also been damaged on a number of occasions as big vehicles misjudge the turn.
cont https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/study-options-beautiful-problematic-bridge-28557181
-
Two answers spring to mind:
1. Install traffic lights at both ends (which will mean Llanrwst will come to standstill at times in summer) which will alleviate the first issue.
2. Ban vehicles above a given weight from using the bridge at all. Alternatively, enure the making good of any damage is borne entirely by the errant drivers plus 10%.

There must be some type of system in place at the moment as there are traffic lights on the western side of the bridge and every time I've stopped at the red light, traffic has been coming over the bridge from the town. I've also stopped at the lights when they are on red and some idiot has overtaken me and caused one of those Mexican stand offs so the present system won't work while you have idiots like that on the road
I couldn't agree with you more about your second point, there should be a weight restriction on the bridge and the offending drivers should be made to pay for any damage done to the bridge. In fact the vehicle drivers should be liable for any damage they have done anywhere and it should be claimed from them either by their vehicle insurance or from them direct

Dramatic new 'Spaceship' toilet block on stilts becomes 'Noah?s Ark' during floods
The two-storey structure has been designed to withstand extreme flood events - but not everyone is happy
From a distance, it looks sleek, eye-catching and ever so slightly out of place. Lined with dainty portholes, it?s been dubbed Llanrwst?s ?spaceship?. When floods hit, as they often do, residents say it resembles more of a "Noah?s Ark".
The town?s new two-storey public toilet block, in Parc Gwydyr next to Afon Conwy, is not quite open yet, and for some residents that seems to have been the case for quite a while. In Llanrwst, there?s been much talk about the town?s long-awaited quartet of unisex ?flood-resistant? toilets and their ?160,000 price tag.

Residents in a Conwy village have written to Conwy County Council objecting to plans for timber holiday lodges. Applicant Peter Davidson has applied to Conwy County Council?s planning department, seeking permission for a change of use of the land for 15 timber holiday lodges at Tyn Terfyn Caravan Site on Llanrwst Road, Tal-y-Bont.
The application is part retrospective following the completion of three lodges and the commencement of construction of another five lodges on the eastern part of the site. Council officers have advised the committee that they are minded to grant planning permission.

WORK in the Upper Conwy catchment will help prevent river bank erosion, boost biodiversity, and improve livestock management and water quality.
National Trust Cymru and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) created 560 metres of fencing on tenanted farmland at the trust’s Cymryd property, adjacent to Aber Afon Conwy Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Putting up fencing four metres inland will allow space for tree planting to strengthen the riverbank, which is being eroded by the Afon Conwy, while creating a woodland habitat corridor for birds and mammals including rare lesser horseshoe bats.

Entire sections of road in Conwy to be raised to stop them being swamped by river
Culverts under the road are also being replaced to stop pooling by rainwater running down hillsides
Sections of a 60mph road in the Conwy Valley are to be raised in height to protect them from river flooding. Conwy Council is planning work on the B5106 to prevent the kind of inundations that often lead to the road’s closure after heavy rain.
Details are scarce as the local authority is still finalising the scheme, which is expected to start in 2025 or early 2026. Residents fear the work will cause significant problems for drivers as lengthy diversions are likely when it gets underway.

Betws-y-Coed is already one of UK's 'best destinations' - these plans could make it even better
Betws-y-Coed is much loved but even this stunning village could be improved further
Betws-y-Coed is one of the top places to visit in the UK - and was named 'best holiday destination in the UK' last year. This will not come as any surprise to anyone who has visited.
Its grey slate and stone buildings are nestled amongst deep green forest. The community is also the gateway to the rugged mountains of Eryri.
There are dozens of shops - including many outdoor activity stores - and lots of great eating and drinking spots. On the outskirts is the Zip World Fforest site.
In truth there isn't a huge amount that could be improved upon but there are a few plans proposed or underway that could enhance it even further.................

Driving through the village of Eglwysbach only takes a minute or two and the mildly-interested motorist is left with an impression of a quintessentially rural Welsh village. Charming, and sleepy even but without too much going on.
But there has been - and still is - more to this self-contained collection of white fronted cottages astride a narrow road once more used to the clip clop of horses pulling carts than busy parents' cars on the primary school run.

A hoard of roman coins that were found at Cae Rhun in the Conwy Valley in 2018, are now on display at Amgueddfa Llandudno Museum.
A novice metal detectorist hit the jackpot just a few months into taking up his new hobby.
Dave Moss, 35, from Southport discovered the important hoard at Kanovium, a Roman fort at Cae Rhun.
Thought to be incredibly significant, the coins have gone through a long process including a late inquest before they were ready to be displayed.
Mr Moss's find was made in unlikely circumstances when he stumbled upon the metallic objects in a torrential downpour.

'Devastating impact' from peak summer r
Business hits out over timing but council says it has a narrow window to do Conwy Valley work
The peak summer holiday is a crucial time for tourism and hospitality businesses - with a big chunk of annual revenues often taken over those six weeks. But for businesses on one side of the Conwy Valley it has been a wash-out and not because of the weather.
On Monday Conwy council started the next phase of flood protection work on the B5106 - with the road shut just north of Trefriw for two weeks. This has had an instant and devastating impact according to one business owner.

The situation has worsened because the two main service reservoirs will have emptied as well as the trunk mains coming down the valley. Some smaller distribution zones such as Pydew, parts of Upper Colwyn Bay and the Great Orme have their own service reservoirs so, potentially, could last out a bit longer.
Many lessons need to be learned from this debacle not least around security of supply for such a large distribution area (much increased in extent as smaller, independent sources have been abandoned) which apparently is now entirely reliant on one feeder pipe routed, for some reason, deep below a stream and only installed within the last 15 years. Nothing to do with lack of investment or aging infrastructure.
Come back Conway Valley Water Board!

Thanks for posting that link Steve, our boiler does have some form of cut off safety device on it but I'm taking no chances and it's staying off until the water system returns back to normal. We do have a gas and electric fire for warmth and also use plastic discs that go in the micro wave so we won't freeze
Just after my last posting our door bell went and I had a lovely surprise when Sam, a neighbour from across the road came and brought 6 large bottles of water for us. It was a wonderful, kind and thoughtful gesture and very much appreciated. We are so lucky to have such nice neighbours as Sam and Carla and they have done the same gesture for other neighbours too.

Your Boiler will always show a low water pressure when it is switched off, typically around 1 - the reading will increase once it comes on and warms up.
When warmed up (after 10 mins or so), it should show a pressure reading of between 1 and 2 (I've attached a photo of my boiler's dial to show a correct reading). Shouldn't be lower than 1 or higher than 2.

'Thanks very much for your advice Dave, it is really appreciated. My boiler has a different dial to yours and mine when it's off will always have the red needle about half way on the dial. At the moment the needle is on the low side but the boiler has fired up and the radiators are getting hot so that's good because it's pretty cold up here on the Heights at this moment
I've waited a while and the needle has risen only slightly but I'm keeping the heating on as it's so cold here. In the past the boiler has cut off when there has not been enough water in the system so if there are any problems it should do that again.

It's going to vary according to where your house is. Low lying houses will get their systems charged soonest, but some high level dwellings may also benefit, as the level rise in the multiple high level reservoirs becomes available quickly.

DaveR...... My thanks too, like Hugo I was a bit wary, but a quick phone call to my plumber, and after checking the make of my boiler, he confirmed your advice.
Yesterday was hectic for us, after seeing various vehicles delivering water in the neighbour hood, we contacted Welsh Water call centre to query why we were being missed, we were advised only people on the vulnerable list getting deliveries, when we told them I had been on the list for six years, that's when it kicked off, after a long winded load of BS, we were told it could have been part of a 'Data Dump' and if we wanted reinstated it would take five days, "£$%^&*()
I contacted Harry Saville one of our local Gogarth councillors who answered .........
I believe that water is being distributed to individuals on Dŵr Cymru’s Priority Services Register – this doesn’t automatically mean that all vulnerable households have had water provided.
I know that Conwy CBC have been liaising with Dŵr Cymru to get water provided to those who need it but may not be on either the Register or known to Conwy’s Social Services. In some cases this has happened reasonably quickly.
I’ll pass on your details to both Conwy CBC and Dŵr Cymru.
At 6pm our neighbour visited a water station and passed us 8 litres, closely followed by both Gogarth councillors Harry Saville and Louise Emery delivering water to the area, and at 9.30 pm Welsh Water staff delivered a further 8 litres, so drinking water now in good supply, hopefully.
The Welsh Water staff who delivered our water had come up from Cardiff to help out, they also suggested that a complaint be made regarding our phone treatment earlier.
I suggest that anyone who thinks they are on or should be on a vulnerable list, double check all service Gas, Electric Water and phones etc
The Priority Services Register (PSR) is a free UK wide service which provides extra advice and support, including when there’s an interruption to your electricity, gas or water supply.......... https://www.thepsr.co.uk/
Purely a rumour but water could start again over the weekend, as Ian said depending on where you live, we are getting a trickle at the moment, but can hear air in the system !......... :-\

They said: "In response to speculation on social media. There has not been a second burst on the pipe.
"A potential leak has been identified on the pipe at the site of the burst water main by our Bryn Cowlyd water treatment works, but it is not impacting on recharging the network. Our teams are still mobilised on site and we are monitoring the situation very closely. If needed, we will conduct anyfurther repair under controlled circumstances when there is a low risk of impact on customer supplies. Before any repair is undertaken, we are refilling our network to provide sufficient storage to make the repair.”

Glad to hear all is well now. Part of Upper Colwyn Bay is fed from the Pant y Gloch service reservoir just off the Llanrwst Road. There is a pumping station at the junction of the Old Highway and King's Drive just inside the wood. A stone-built structure which a first sight looks like a small cottage. This pumps up to the reservoir so if the "town" mains go dry, nothing will go up the hill and the system will empty.

Thanks Cambrian, I'm really glad that we are back to normal now and won't take things for granted in the future. On Friday when the water had been switched off I took our dog Teddy on to the Bryn Cadno Nature Reserve for one of his daily walks. Bryn Cadno is just below the Pant Y Gloch reservoir and sometimes water is released from the reservoir and it goes in to a pond in Bryn Cadno. It's stagnant water and the mud is like an oily sludge and Teddy has been in there a few times!
It was only while I was up there that it crossed my mind "what if he goes in the pond, what could I do with no water to wash him" ? Anyway for once he was a good dog and nothing happened thank goodness
That pumping station on the Old Highway always seems to be leaking but when we had the recent icy spell, King's Drive was like a river so it's a good job it didn't freeze over or it could have been lethal

“The priority lists of Dwr Cymru did not work.
This article is highlighting a big problem, I was supposed to be on the priority/vulnerable list, but at the time of writing have only received a total of 6 litres of water from Dwr Cymru.
I have since been advised to double check each year with the major services to ensure my details are up to date, I mentioned before
that my information may have been deleted in a 'Data Dump' after the pandemic, I suggest everyone involved double check.
-
My husband was on the Priority Register & they sent us a message advising us the water was going off & to store as much water as we could, which we did. When we were down to the last few litres I called to ask how much longer would it be before we had water delivered, to be told he wasn't on the Priority Register.
I explained that we had had two telephone calls giving us updates as we were on the register & she repeated he wasn't on the list, but would I like her to register his information, which she did. She then said she didn't know when there would be a delivery as people on dialysis at home etc would come first.
We never got that delivery & had to depend on friends & family living in Dwygyfylchi & Llanfairfechan to keep us supplied, as they were still on.
I discovered yesterday they had delivered to a holiday home in my street twice. Where was the fairness in that & I'm very angry about it.
Our Local Ward Councillor contacted The Senedd in the first 24 hours we were off, asking for help as Welsh Water had nothing in place for an incident such as this. They didn't reply & I'm even more angry about that.
Welsh Water are an absolute disgrace.

Chaotic scenes labelled 'shambolic' after up to 100,000 people left without water
One local MS called it a 'horrendous' and 'heartbreaking' experience
The response to a burst pipe which left up to 40,000 homes and 100,000 people without water for days was "shambolic and insufficient," MSs have said. Supplies in the Conwy Valley, Llandudno and Colwyn Bay were impacted from Wednesday January 15.
Conservative MS for Aberconwy, Janet Finch-Saunders, told the Senedd: "It was horrendous, it’s probably the most heartbreaking experience I have ever witnessed…. I can’t emphasise enough just how upsetting it was. People have been left traumatised by it … it was a humanitarian crisis."................ https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/chaotic-scenes-labelled-shambolic-after-30835274?IYA-reg=49560bcd-5a9c-47f0-8fc5-ba2e71710589

Thanks for the link to register again Steve & I hadn't seen your post on No 237. It certainly is quite clear it's happened to a lot of us & what a terrible thing to do to vulnerable people in dumping their data. It should be made clear that you have to register every 12 months in that case. What I can't understand is they telephoned & on the recorded message it stated as my husband was on the register they were informing him to store water, as there had been a burst & he acknowledged the call by pressing 3, yet he wasn't on the register for bottled water?
Welsh Water have a lot to answer for.

One of world's most photographed tearooms has undergone a dramatic change
An inspection by National Trust Cymru, which is responsible for the 15th-century property's external walls and roof, revealed that the tearoom's iconic plant requires a significant trim. The evaluation of a small section of the roof showed signs of plant ingress and minor damage to some slates, which are secured with wooden pegs............ https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/one-worlds-most-photographed-tearooms-30886045

Update........What inspectors found beneath dense thatch cloaking iconic North Wales tearoom
The 545-year-old building has been given a 'haircut' - and there's been a surprising reaction to its new naked look.
Post-trim inspections have been undertaken at an historic tearoom recently shorn of its world-famous coat of ivy. Fifteenth century Tu Hwnt i’r Bont in Llanrwst, Conwy, underwent a dramatic transformation last week when much of its iconic Virginia creeper was stripped away.
The denuded Grade II-listed riverside building, located beside Pont Fawr bridge, has long been a magnet for photographers, especially in autumn when its ivy turns crimson red. While its “haircut” shocked some people, there’s been a surprisingly positive reaction online with some people loving its new look..................photos ............. https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/what-inspectors-found-beneath-dense-30928150?IYA-reg=49560bcd-5a9c-47f0-8fc5-ba2e71710589

We had planned to go to Talgoed Nursery oin Glan Conwy for breakfast this morning but after seeing this report we thought that it was advisable to phone up beforehand. Sure enough the water there had been cut off and the cafe had been forced to close :(
Instead we went to Kava in Llandudno and enjoyed a nice breakfast there instead :)

Eccles cakes and almond tarts dumped on roadside
Mystery surrounds why someone keeps dumping individually-wrapped cakes by a main road in north Wales.
People living in Dolwyddelan, Conwy county, have been finding almond tarts, lemon tarts and Eccles cakes on verges by the A470 - still in their plastic wrapping.
The cakes have been appearing for several months, and though some have started to decay, others are still in date.
Residents have jokingly referred to a "phantom iced tart flinger", but also say it's frustrating because it is littering the Eryri National Park.

Work to restore a Conwy river is helping reduce flood risk downstream.
The work, as part of Prosiect Uwch Conwy, has been carried out by Natural Resources Wales (NRW) on the Afon Machno, a major tributary of the Afon Conwy, at National Trust Cymru’s Carrog farm.
The work involved removing man-made embankments and lowering the riverbank, which allows water to once again access the floodplain.
This slows the river’s flow during high water levels and helps to reduce flood risk lower down in the catchment......
Scrapes and channels have also been dug on the floodplain to restore historic flow patterns, enabling further water storage.
The work was funded through the Welsh Government’s Water Capital Programme.
This programme supports environmental priorities including river restoration, metal mine remediation, fisheries, and water quality.

Eryri National Park explains why it's closed off natural wonder for now
The site was named the 'best hidden waterfall walk in the UK'
A natural wonder in the Eryri National Park has been closed off to the public. Grey Mare’s Tail Waterfall, or Rhaeadr y Parc Mawr in Welsh, is situated in Gwydir Forest near Llanrwst and Trefriw.
It is a horsetail waterfall, one of the finest examples in the UK. Horsetail falls widen out as they fall down a slope while still maintaining contact with the underlying cliff wall.
