Title: Conversion of video files to MP4 format

Can anyone advise me of the, best/cheapest/free, downloadable software to convert videos from say, Realplayer to an MP4 format please?  I have tried a few trial versions of various conversion programmes, but if I am going to buy one, I would like to hear what other people recommend.  Thanks $good$
