Nice shot of the old golf course at Wyddfyd, now the site of Ski Llandudno
[smg id=586]

Wow, what a view from there ... it even rivals Mike's view from the 5th tee!
Just beautiful ...
-
I used to play golf there with my dad, back in the good old days of LLandudno Urban District Council :golf:

You should take a stroll to the ski lodge sometime Fester. My favorite place in town to chill, have a few pints, and the view is still beautiful!

Played many a round there myself, the uphill sections were a nightmare however.
-
Trojan,
I live quite near the Ski Lodge, and I go there whenever my in laws are in town ... they love it there, so its the first place we go!
It is a beautiful view, and you can't see the evil wind turbines from that angle either!
-
Is it just me that finds the food selection at the Ski Lodge a bit poor? A great place to sit outside with a pint, certainly, but not a lot of choice in what to eat.
-
I know what you mean Dave, ..not the most exciting menu.
But its always very quiet when I have called in, the sandwiches and jacket spuds are very nice, ..but if the menu was any more extensive I think they would be risking a lot of wastage.
-
Perhaps it's always so quiet because the food selection is so poor? Many's the time I've hesitated outside and then carried on down into town to eat after remembering how limited the menu is.
Indeed, the whole Ski Slope looks a bit run down. there's a boarded up kiosk at the bottom of the slope itself that looks rubbish, all the paths are very uneven, the car park is full of craters, landscaping of the whole site is very poor. Needs some money spending on it.
-
What doesn't need some money spending on it?
Trouble is, its a vicious circle ... poor upkeep, ...fewer customers.....no money to re-invest .....even less customers.....wrack and ruin! ... no customers
-
I saw this postcard from 1910 on Ebay - of the 'Devil's cave' on the Little Orme. It's the first time I've heard this name mentioned - does anyone know more? Where is it on the Little Orme?

It's called Ogof Cythreuliaid in Welsh Dave and can only really be accessed by boat, or if you're a strong swimmer. There is another nearby called Eglwys Wen (White church) which is also only accessible from the sea.
The old adage to the two caves may apply.....The nearer the church the further from God. Nearer the church - Eglwys Wen, further from God - Ogof Cythreuliaid.
If you study your postcard you can just see part of a boat beyond the furthest person in the cave.
-
Maps of the Little Orme rarely show the two caves:
-
I found this view of Eglwys Wen:
-
I seem to remember it's possible to access Ogof Cythreuliaid from Angel cove at certain low-tide states.
-
Thanks for the info, guys! ;D

St Tudnos Church in the 1870s:

The area looks rather bare - no trees. There are several in the churchyard now, and there is no civic cemetery! When did that come into being?
I wonder Dave whether you would also post this pic onto the thread "Local church and religious news" so that a direct comparison can be made. Thanks.

I understand from the cemeteries department at CCBC that the cemetery opened in September 1903, though the chapel wasn't built until some years afterwards.

I've always wondered about that card, Jack. I have it, and to me it seems as though it's a very early form of 'photoshopping'. The stage and performers' perspective seem to be slightly 'off'.

Yes I see what you mean, I'd not really noticed before. Do you think the stage was ever at this site? Where is Faulke's Cave - has it been built on now?
-
The scene dates from c1910. I think it's real and the slightly odd effect comes from the colourisation process. This site is now the entrance drive to Ardwy Orme.

Don't know about date, does any one else think this picture was was taken on Ty Gwyn Road
Llandudno - Google Maps (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Llandudno&aq=0&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=15.268214,46.538086&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Llandudno,+Conwy,+United+Kingdom&ll=53.328054,-3.834486&spn=0.007523,0.022724&z=16&layer=c&cbll=53.328056,-3.834644&panoid=fWvyWNFppiWqbJTumNIZpA&cbp=12,267.97,,0,4.58) have a look, any thoughts?.
-
It certainly is Ty Gwyn Road... just round the corner at the bottom, looking upward. On the left is the Care in the Community (or similar) facility building.
The Fire escape is clearly visible on the adjacent building.
-
That photo looks to be taken by one of the boy racers with the large exhaust pipes on their way up to the summit to go and burn the rubber of their tyres.
-
or am I just getting old and cynical.
-
This site is now the entrance drive to Ardwy Orme.
Dave mentioned the location previously.
-

I would date this in the Edwardian period around 1910 due to the style if the hats.

Ardwy Orme was built in 1895 but perhaps that stage was built in part of the garden nearest the cliff
-

It's actually from Google Streetview, I think, which, for some reason, doesn't display properly on the Forum when you try to post a link from it.
-
Keeping getting images of the Google Street View camera car burning rubber up the Orme. Might be time for a drink!

I was driving up the Orme today when I saw what I think was the site of the Scarlet Merrions. If I am correct it's just past Ardwy Orme and is now covered in trees, Faulke's cave is still visible from the road but that area is fenced off. The small building on the road is still there as a guide to the location of the photo.

I would bloody hope so .... its for sale for £450,000 .... ludicrous.

I thought it was the West Shore Tollhouse that's for sale (it's got nice clean stonework, regularly sand blasted!)

Sorry, my mistake... ))* :-}}} I thought the picture WAS of the West Shore Tollhouse... but when I look again....

Fester you'll have to get out more :cyclist40:

Between the 2 pictures, the landscape on the left has changed an awful lot over the years... the older one still looks more like West Shore toll house looks today.... but I'm tired and stupid.

never stupid, the building has itself changed a lot and I had to keep looking at the two then and now pics! :)
-
No you`re not Fester, I agree with you.
-
The old picture is the toll house out west shore, the image has been printed the wrong way round. You can tell by the rock formations, which is are still the same today Llandudno, UK - Google Maps (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Llandudno,+UK&aq=0&sll=53.800651,-4.064941&sspn=14.53663,46.538086&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Llandudno,+Conwy,+United+Kingdom&ll=53.322724,-3.849858&spn=0.000902,0.00284&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=53.322724,-3.849858&panoid=2LiQR2npFRUEx3aaqiyCKg&cbp=12,315.01,,0,5)

It's interesting; our brains can fairly easily process certain types of transformations - such as the backwards clock - but photos of familiar places seem almost alien by comparison.

Indeed, I feel that the main fall in house prices is yet to come. Could be another 40% to come off some properties.

Black Gate circa 1910
-
It's interesting to see how every little community had its own shops. Here, by the Blackgate, you see one on both sides of the road. I was recently talking to a friend of mine who, although well known in North Wales, has no particular connection to Penrhyn Bay. He was surprised when I told him that the property he had just purchased in Penrhyn Isaf Road used to be a shop. More surprised still when I told him that the building on the other side of the road was also a shop. I don't remember what they sold, probably bits of groceries, sweets, fags etc. Mike

Superb picture Sue ... I bet TheMedz agrees with me too!

Great pictures Trojan and Sue. It's the first time I've seen evidence of the actual gate that gave the junction it's name. Also on the bottom of the set of three from Trojan could you tell me how I do I get the Google Street view style " 360 degree pan option" to see what's on the other side of that wall on the bottom right of the picture !

The Black Gate was put in place to stop animals wandering down into town.

Thanks Dave. Not a lot going on inside the wall when the picture was taken. Do you have a date for the picture? It also matches up with the large photograph hanging in the entrance to the Victoria Centre.

Sorry if this is getting a bit boring but I've just had another look at the third photo from the set of three and Prospect Terrace seems to have another house with bay windows attached to the bottom end of the row. It's definitely not there on the second photo and there are no windows on the end house now. Was there a house in what is now fenced off scrub land where Wyddfyd Road and Prospect Terrace meet?

Oh no, not boring at all.
I see what you mean. ???
Where's Barbiroli when you need her? She lived in Prospect Terrace.
-
By George you're right! :)
But what happened to the house?
-
I always remember that building just to the right of where the trams are passing. I always thought it had something to do with the tramway?
This pic is earlier than Dave's shown above. Note the absence of motor vehicles.
Note the horse & cart just below Black Gate and the undeveloped land beyond Llwynon Road.
The 1910 "Street View" shows pretty much the same scene over the wall, although the house has not yet been built just to the left of it and the land is covered by trees. 8)

Interesting to compare this one(taken from roughly the same place I think) with the 1910 picture

I`m here Trojan, Yes there was a house right on the end of prospect terrace, a Mrs Williams and her daughter Valerie lived there, she was a bit on the posh side not like us in the rest of the terrace, she used to take visitors. We used to play ball against the side of her house she would come out and play merry hell with us, it must have been awful for them inside Bang Bang Bang
-
My O H has just jogged my memory, about 25 years ago part of Prospect Terrace, near the house we are talking about collapsed falling onto the back of the houses on Tygwyn Road, due to this a couple of cars were stranded at the top of the terrace for some months. I believe the house was pulled down because the foundations were not stable anymore.
-

That's the one which was annihilated by a car in last winter's ice

Are we talking about the same building? It was around this location to the left of the tram tracks.
-
that building is or was to do with the trams when i was younger ok a lot younger i used to help oil /grease the cable and remember going in there ,
-
Nemesis I thought the building that was hit by the car was the old Jack Smith shop on the right just before Black Gate. I don`t think a car can get near the old pumping station that is by where the trams pass.
-
No we've been talking about different buildings.
I meant the one pictured to the right which was a shop. ( As Barbiroli says)

Exactly!

In the last few weeks there has been builders on site, that house is fine again now...
BUT... there has been no bollards placed outside, so I fear the same fate will befall the house in future winters.

Just don't sit on that seat. $good$
-
Don't sit on it In winter times anyway. In summer it is that very same seat that saves so many SOS calls by allowing some people, who think they can save themselves the tram fare by walking up the Orme, somewhere to rest and recover for a while.
-
There is a much better balcony, in the immediate vicinity, that affords a better view..eh Medz? ;) ;)
-
A chilled beer or wine is always available for you and Mrs Fester anytime you care to share the view.
-
Cheers Mr and Mrs Medz...
I walked up past that very balcony at 10.15 tonight...it looked blissful, and I turned to look into the bay... and the lights from the prom reflected on the sea.
I looked up again at said balcony with envious eyes... that view is worth a million.
Then I took a deep breath, and trudged on up the hill.
The novelty will never wear off my friend.

A couple of different Great Orme postcards :)
-
Jack, in the top postcard that you posted above, the brick circular edifice resembling a small chimney in the centre of the pic was Vivian's mineshaft.
You can still see it today at the Great Orme Copper Mines.
