Title: Llandudno from the Gt Orme 1855
Post by: martin on December 17, 2011, 11:19:23 am
This view, a page from the 1855 London Illustrated London News 1855, is currently for sale on E-Bay at around £28, too rich for me, auction ends Sunday afternoon.  Now, as it says in the song, "If I were a rich man", I would buy it, but as I am not, all I can do is look. :o

That seems to show the old proposed railway line to the proposed harbour!  *&(

It certainly is and just an artist's impression.

A larger framed copy used to hang on the wall in the Links Hotel.

i have just looked at it again on E-bay where it is much bigger, and yes, the curve is a railway, in a cutting, fascinating, where was the harbour to be?

According to Ivor Wyn Jones, the St George's Harbour & Railway Company had received Parliament's approval in 1853 for approval of the conversion of the undeveloped bay into a harbour.

The whole of the Bay was to be the harbour, with the wall stretching across from the Great to little Orme. The town would have been called Port Wrexham if it had gone ahead.

That would have changed things a bit, thank heavens it did not happen ;D

The Shop building at the end of Clifton Road (formerly Cimatti's) was originally intended to be the Station Masters house.

Thanks for the info, you will have to excuse my ignorance, is that now a general store, Gloddaeth Stores?

Thanks Dave, so it was very close to happening then, is there anything else in the area to do with the proposed rail/dock development do you know?

Martin, if you look at this thread there's a bit more information on the proposed harbour:

My scan of the document isn't very good but hopefully you can get some idea of the plans.

Thanks everyone for your input.  I am still learning about the area, it's absolutely fascinating just how much history there is in the area, and how much individual knowledge there is on the forum.  I have just received a copy of Jim Roberts "A Century of Llandudno" from Amazon, having had a quick flick through I am now reading from the start and learning the basics, I did not even know where the name Llandudno came from.  Thanks again for all of your help.
