Does anyone have a picture of GR Thompson's newsagents kiosk on the Pier at all please? It was at the base of the Pavillion and we don't have a photo or post card for some reason. We were always told it was the first kiosk on the pier but now someone says that was a fruiterers.
-
I know the one you mean, it was built under the legs of the stairway next to the Grand Hotel. Used to be run by a Frank Aigbogun in its final years. Don't think I have a photo of it but Trojan may have one. :)
-
Is this the one you mean? You can just see it under the pavilion stairway at the end, with a person standing in front of it.
-
Yes it's the one on the far right. I was hoping someone might have a photo. of it early on.
-
You can just about see it in this early postcard:

I've always wanted to know the story behind this photo, which shows a collapsed section of the retaining wall just outside the Grand Hotel in Llandudno, where the seaward section of the pier starts. When did this happen and what caused it?

Closer view of the newsagents kiosk. This kiosk actually still exists today under the base of the remaining Pavilion staircase, if you look carefully. I believe its currently used as a staffroom.
-
hi,i see from here that the bait shop has shut, are they still allowing fishing on the pier? thanks :)
-
Hi Andrea welcome to the forum! +}}{--
Fester, could you please answer this lady's question?
-
Hi Andrea.
I am totally confused as to the fishing situation on the Pier.
I have my own shop there, but I constantly get asked about fishing and I have no definitive answer.
Let me tell you what I would do.
I would take my fishing gear, go to the pier and fish my head off.... and if anyone wants thier £3 subscription, then surely they would approach you wouldn't they?
Go right ahead...
-
*&( thanks we will!! where coming down on the 21st march for afew days so thought id better check.when did sarah finish?would love to move to llandudno its a great place seriously considering it :D
-
Sarah (bless her, cos I like her) ..finished around Christmas time .. I think.
But then again, the weather was that bad, you couldn't get on the pier anyway.
-
Just to let you know since the demise of the Bait Shop on the Pier the newsagents at the corner of Upper Mostyn Street / Church walks has started to sell Bait and limited amounts of fishing tackle ££$
-
He's been selling it for a little while now... even last year...
-
much easier going to Asda for a pack of fish fingers than fishing L0L

Andrea, my little shop on the Pier is the aromatherapy /natural remedies / bathing gifts shop. (opposite the toy and joke shop), pop in to say hello !
But due to the genius of Dave R, you don't have to walk on the pier, because I have a website now .. llandudno-emporium.com
This very forum has the banner for the website, appearing regularly at the top of each page.
There you will see all my range, ... plus the fabulous photography of Dave R himself,,! All good stuff.
BlongB .... I don't get told anything official, but I have heard that it will be a kiosk for little fishes to nibble feet!
My wife says that its a fantastic idea, and she enjoyed said therapeutic treatment down at the Victoria Centre.
Good luck to them ... and good luck to the fishes!
-
Could they make those kiosks look any worse - cheap and nasty.
-
That’s the back view of the new shed, which only I have to put up with Dave. I did telephone the pier manager and was told they would be clearing up their mess in due course.
-
I love your shop, you can't walk past without going in,your soaps are fab.i will be in in march for more ;D

You will have to lift thine eyes above the mess until then, Blongb!

Hi Andrea... it was great to meet you...and your little man!
I have sinced BANISHED Ryan from my shop...and ordered him NEVER to touch another slinky as long as he lives.
Plenty of houses for rent... are wanting long term, or a week or so?
-
 we ended up making into a little slinky! Long term , I've been looking on right move but don't seen to be many,so if you know of any letting agents that would be great .
-
These estate agents all have a letting agency.
Flethcher and Poole
Anthony Flint
Smith & Wypler..
-
thankyou :D
-
I've always found these aerial shots of the pier interesting.
-
Indeed, especially the last one. You can see how what is now the cafe and bar were once waiting rooms, with glass windows on all sides and the ability to walk right round, not just the front as now.
-
Yeah, it's a shame that those buildings have been encumbered with additions over the years, though obviously they're necessary for commercial use. Does anyone know when they removed the turrets/lookout rooms from those buildings? If you look at old images, they're there. If the pier ever got an overhaul and restoration (in some parallel fantasy world, where the Heritage Lottery people would hand out money for such things), I think they would be a prime candidate for restoration, back to the original design.

Waiting rooms for the steamer passengers I presume?

Dave should know.
Here's a photo showing the turrets. The landing stage looks very different too.
-
They were definitely missing in the 1970's, as I don't remember them when we took our pilgrimages to the Isle of Man.

I'd say they disappeared sometime in the early 60s? I take it there must have been a spiral staircase in the centre of the ground floor to access the roof? Here's a closer photo of what is now the Bar:

One of my favourite early shots. Pier Pavilion & Baths Hotel in around 1890:

Thats fantastic, in so many historical ways.... but why are there TWO threads entitled Llandudno Pier?
Admin, see to it.

I think one (this) is about Past Times and the History, and the other is about what is happening now. Would be confusing to mix them!
(Thinks - should I repeat this on the other thread?)
;)

It's one of Dave's passions in life and he IS Admin. :D

The glass solarium which you can see at the back of the Pavilion was great. Willy Wyse used to grow tomatoes in grow bags in there!
-
Must be one of the first drinking fountains in the town in the foreground. Looks like you had to pull on one of the chains to operate it.

The whole thing looks amazingly resplendent, does it not. Just beautiful.
