Drivers' speeds are creeping up a month after 20mph law came into force
Data shows there has been a 'slight bounce-back' in speeds

Analysis shows drivers' speeds are creeping up a month after the Welsh Government's law to make 20mph the default speed in Wales, came into force.

A week after the law came into force on September 17, an independent transport data consultancy carried out a review into speeds and journey times.

The Analysis report revealed most drivers in Wales have slowed down and journey times are between 45 and 63 seconds longer on average

On the roads they analysed, in the week after the change speeds had dropped by 3.1mph on the selected roads. The new data shows this is now 2.3mph. Speeds of the fastest drivers (the top 15%) dropped by 4.9mph after the first week but this has changed to only 3.8mph.

Petrol retailers should cut price by 5p a litre, RAC says

Petrol prices should be cut by 5p a litre by the biggest fuel retailers to reflect their lower wholesale costs, the RAC has said.

The motoring body also says that drivers have not yet felt the benefits of the government's 5p duty cut brought in last year.

The price of oil spiked after Russia invaded Ukraine last year, which led to higher prices at the pumps for drivers.

But wholesale oil prices are now lower, down nearly $20 a barrel.

The RAC said the big four supermarkets were making the most profits from petrol - an average of 16p for every litre of unleaded fuel sold in October, and 12p for every litre of diesel.

Speeding drivers used criminal 'Nip farms' to frame innocent motorists in nation-wide scam
For a fee, motorists breaking speed limit are given the details of innocent drivers unaware they are being prosecuted and convicted, court hears

Details of genuine people, were being sold to drivers, who had been caught speeding and who wanted to avoid a fine and points on their licence, reports WalesOnline. Those innocent people end up getting prosecuted at courts across in England and Wales, without their knowledge.

Nissan and its partners have announced a ?2bn plan to build three electric car models at its Sunderland factory.

The Japanese firm will build electric Qashqai and Juke models at the plant alongside the next generation of the electric Leaf, which is already produced there. The scheme could help preserve the jobs of about 6,000 workers directly, and thousands more across the UK.

Nissan said that alongside this, a major new battery plant known as a "gigafactory" will also be needed.

This is in addition to the current factory adjacent to the car plant, and a further gigafactory already being built by its partner, AESC.

Nissan will spend ?1.12bn on preparing its UK facilities and supply chain for the new models and training its workforce.

Alongside the gigafactory the total new investment will be up to ?2bn, according to the company.

Petrol prices have fallen to lowest level at the pumps on average for more than two years, the RAC has said.

A litre of unleaded costs about ?1.43 on average, a price which was last seen at UK forecourts in October 2021.

A fall in wholesale fuel costs has resulted in lower pump prices, the RAC said, adding that petrol could fall below ?1.40 in the next week.

The drop also comes after the UK competition watchdog warned that drivers were not getting a fair deal.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said last month that retail prices for petrol and diesel had not fallen in step with wholesale costs, adding that there was "cause for concern" competition in the fuel market was not working.

The RAC, which has criticised supermarkets and petrol retailers over pricing, said petrol falling to ?1.43 on average - about 10p cheaper than this time last year - was "good news for drivers, especially as prices should continue to come down in the run-up to Christmas due to the wholesale price being significantly lower".

Campaign for car law change after 280 crashes and six deaths a year

More than four out of five (85%) drivers affected by headlight glare say the problem is getting worse, a survey suggests. The RAC, which commissioned the poll, called on the Government to fund an independent study into the issue.

It believes headlights appear brighter on modern cars because their use of LED rather than traditional halogen bulbs creates a more intense and focused beam, which improves a driver?s view but can be to the detriment of other road users. Other potential factors include badly aligned headlights and the increase in the number of cars that sit higher on the road, such as SUVs.
