Fair play to you, you always have a couple I've not seen before. 8)
Do you mind if I add a few into the Forum Gallery?
The pier circa 1910. Note the throngs of passengers who have just disembarked the steamer docked at the pier head. This could be the scene in a year or two if the Landing Stage can be repaired and those cruise liners start calling. I can see Fester rubbing his hands together already...
Here's an *&( view of the original pier.
For one summer season, there was a helicopter offering rides which operated out of the old Cafe on the zig zags. Wonder if that was it?
I am always amazed at how casual those construction workers are, what would H&S say about all this?
Utterly fascinating ... but I bet the arcade on there was rubbish!

Hi Trojan! I notice that photo number 2 of the old penny, happens to be a ''Honolulu Penny'' - my old man, used to show them to me!
It was many years before I realised what he was saying.
The Trident the Queen was holding, was, yes!
You've guessed it - honolulu.
Dontheturner
Boater Hats are becoming popular in other areas._))* _))* _))* _))* really tickled me that L0L
The Montserrat sign advertised a Lime fruit juice cordial that was popular at the time, apparently. Seems an odd place for a big advert, as it is largely blocked by the Baths Hotel.
I have always wondered, given the intensity of the 1994 fire ...(as described by Trojan) .. how come The Grand itself didn't go up in flames too?Only one thing saved the Grand...the wind was blowing the other way. That's why the windows in the hotels on Happy Valley Road exploded with the heat but the Grand was unscathed.
Must have been a terribly nerve wracking time ... and I reckon many locals will have felt very sick in the following days...
Brilliant postcard and picture.... finally NOW I can see way passengers used to go through that canopy, down those stairs and on the the steamships.
You have told me before, but I can really picture those halcyon days now.

I remember going down those stairs to embark the Isle of Man steam ships.

Interesting. I always thought those steps were removed when they rebuilt the Landing Stage in 1969 but maybe it was later. The walkway bit is till there under the Pavilion.I remember going down those stairs to embark the Isle of Man steam ships. What year would that have been?
Must have been 1970/71.
My favorite Isle of Man Steam Packet vessel, King Orry at the pier head, showing the pre-1969 landing stage:Looking of those pictures reminds me...didn't the Pier Manager (or Piermaster I think he was called), along with his staff, all wear naval uniforms at one time?
I see Cyril Fletcher was on the bill, I remember him well on 'That's Life' many years agoThat's right. Betty Astell (second on the bill) was his wife.
What happened to permanent hotel residents? How did it come about in the first place?
Back in those days, hotel costs were probably relatively cheaper, as staff costs were not nearly as high as they were now. So little old ladies on a decent pension or with investment income could afford to live in a hotel. The hotel benefits by having the guaranteed income and the residents gets a discount on the normal room rate. I'd love to live in a hotel, no cooking or cleaning to do.

This one needs to be framed and available for sale....
Just imagine what pristine condition it was in at that time.... I would love to have seen it.
The pier circa 1880:Interesting to see the pierhead was much smaller than it is now. In that photo, the section between the cafe and toilets has not yet been built.
I just tried to get the year by googling 'David Whitfield Gaytime' I regret that now, odd things appeared :o
