I believe there are 3 books on the history of Penrhynside.
Is it still possible to get hold of them ? Trying to find information on my family.
-
Mull, there are books written by Kenneth Dibble on Penrhynside, Bodafon and Rhiwledyn but I don't think they are available anywhere. Somewhere on the forum under Genealogy and Research a librarian from Penrhyn Bay said that they knew the author and would approach him to see if any copies could be made of the books.
I don't remember if there was any outcome to this but sadly Kenneth Dibble passed away in recent years. From memory something was said about it under the heading "Harris Family" but I'm not 100 per cent sure.
I've read the booklets at the Conwy Archives and they are very good indeed with many details of people and life in years gone by
-
Thanks Hugo,
You say you have read them at Conway archives. Are these copies kept there for reference and available for anyone to view ?
Not been to Llandudno for a while but will make an effort this year. Time has been taken up training a new search dog ready for assessment Has been great fun in the weather this winter, NOT.
Spring is coming.....Slowly.

Yes, the Penrhynside is covered in a series of three books which are an excellent resource for family historians. In addition to those mentioned by Hugo, he also wrote one on Nant Y Gamar. For those unfamiliar with the format, Ken identifies all the dwellings from early times and gives the history of each including all the inhabitants and what happened to them.
They are quite difficult to obtain now and other than a dozen or so which he gave to the late Dafydd Hughes to sell I don't believe they were retailed generally. Very occasionally the odd one appears in one of the local second hand book shops - or you could try the online site Abe Books.
-
Mull, Yes those books are there for anyone to see and you don't have to be a member to go to the Archives. All you have to do is ring the bell and then go in and sign in.
The staff are very helpful and will show you where the books are, they are certainly worth a read for anyone who has a connection with that area.
-
Hi,
I too had previously tried to obtain these and am the person who was told the library may help linking to Mr Dibble. As Hugo mentioned he sadly died last year.
I was however able to obtain photocopies at a cost as they are not copyrighted. I believe I got them through the Gwynedd Family History Society Library found at www.gwyneddfhs.org (http://www.gwyneddfhs.org). All my contact was via email as I am in NZ.
There are in fact a total of 4 books.
Rhiwledyn and the Little Orme - Library No 668
Penrhynside - Houses and Families Parts 1 and 2 - Library No not marked but probably 665 or 669
Bodafon and Pant y Wennol - Library No 667
Nant y Gamar - Library No 666
They were copied and posted to me.
Hope this helps

Who is the family and where were they. perhaps I could help a little

Hugh Hughes , Cobbler/shoe repairer lived at Tan Y Wal.
Think there is an Anglesey connection somewhere.
Grace Ellen Jones lived there in late 1940s/1950s.
Ivor Shields, lived in Mount Pleasant 1950s.
Any information on these please.

Have managed to find the following excerpts from "Penrhynside Part 2" By Ken Dibble

Sorry to gate crash! :) But I was wondering if you had the rest of the pages on Saron Villas? $thanx$
-
Jom, thanks for putting the extracts on the site. Had a busy weekend so far and when I get a chance will look at it. I think I am a long way away in Mull but to get information sent from New Zealand is something else. Once again thanks very much.
Hugo, Thanks also for your information. I have been digging around in some papers and photos my father left and looks like my Nains family lived in Brookes Street in early 1900s.
Hope to visit Llandudno sometime this year
-
hi acati,
Yes will put them up as soon as I can. running short on time just at the moment but won't be long $good$
Hi Mull,
You're welcome. It's great to be able to return a favour. Hugo has been VERY good to me and it's great to repay one way or another
-
Saron Villas as promised ;D
-
Thanks for that JOM.
Springfield was attached to Tan y Wal and I would be interested in seeing the whole piece. When I was a child a Mr /Mrs Hughes lived there with daughter Neris and son ,unable to remember his name. I believe Neris lived at Fferm, towards Llanrhos in the 1970/80s.
Could you please send a copy of page 50.
Once again thanks very much.

I was in the Archives in Llandudno yesterday but couldn't find Kenneth Dibble's book on Penrhynside although the other books on the Little Orme, Bodafon and Nant Y Gamma were there.
It might have been misplaced but I didn't ask as I knew that Jom was kindly supplying info via the forum
-
;D As requested. Haven't had a chance to check if it has the info you want I'm afraid. On my way to work!

Mull, I was reading Chris Draper's book on Walks From Llandudno and in walk 3 Penrhynside he had this to say.:-
"Tan y Wal is another cottage with 18th century origins. At one time this was home to Huw Hughes, the vilage cobbler. He was notorious for his habit of chewing tobacco, and waiting customers had to be alert so as to avoid the soggy projectiles of ejected tobacco"
-
Remember that now, making me smile.
Deadly accurate , never missed the stove in the workshop or fire in the house.
-
Thank you so much Jom! $thanx$ It's provided a wealth of information that I wouldn't otherwise be able to find out now that the Penrhynside lot have gone so it really means a lot to me. ;) Could I be cheeky and ask for the pages on Pleasant View? :D

Hi,
I’m currently trying to help a friend track down a family she used to know from her childhood in Penrhyn Bay and I was wondering whether anyone here might be able to help me. She doesn’t remember many facts apart from the fact that they owned/used to run a grocery on what is now the main roundabout in Penrhyn Bay, (in the late 1950s/1960s and perhaps into the 1970s). I was hoping that someone might be able to give me information about the family or the grocery. From chatting to people from the area I believe that the grocery may have been called ‘Little Orme Stores’ at one point. Some of the names that have cropped up in relation to the grocery have been Dougie Thomas, Ben Hughes and Ralph Jones. Absolutely any more info about those people or other families who may have owned the grocery during that time would be much appreciated!
Many thanks,
Selina

Hi there,
I've been looking around the forum and asking quite a few people this but I was hoping that you might be able to help me on this thread.

I haven't been able to get a copy of the Penrhynside book by Kenneth Dibbles as I live quite far away but I thought that it might have some clues as to that area of Llandudno Road/Glan-Y-Mor Road and the shop there.
Absolutely any more info about people I mentioned above or other families who may have owned the grocery during that time would be hugely appreciated! Thank you so much!

Thanks.

Hi there. In 1969 the Proprietor of the Little Orme Stores was Ralph L Jones, his home address is 3 Llandudno Road

Apologies Ian - I wasn't sure how the forum worked and whether I needed to reply specifically to each post which might be relevant! Thanks for your help though!

Hi Sue,
Thanks so much for your help - I really appreciate it! Do you by any chance know who may have been the proprietor before that at all or is there a way you might recommend to try and find that out?
Thanks again :)
Selina

Hi Selina, There are earlier Trade Directories held at Llandudno Library which will contain the information , maybe a kind forum member will do a lookup for you !
-
There is a Street Index in the Archives that must be very early 60's or late 50's but the only entry I could see was the " Little Orme Cafe" prop. L Durden and the business was a Cafe and Grocers.
In the 1939 Street Index there was no "Little Orme " business but a partnership of Billington and Brown traded as Grocers at the Premier Stores which appeared to be in the area as Little Orme Stores and could possibly be the same address

I received a very interesting article from Mull recently ( see photo ) and it was to commemorate the first Penrhynside reunion on 27th March 1992. It was a fscinating insight into the life and times of people in the village.
Mull would like to ask on the 3 Towns Forum if anyone knows, has there been another Penrhynside reunion and is there are any records of them. Do yo know of anyone on the forum who would know. It would be nice to find out if Nerys is still at Fferm.
I don't know the answer to either question but perhaps someone on the forum may know and is so Mull would be pleased to know.
-
Hugo, my contact informs me to the best of his knowledge there has not been another reunion.
Also, he does not know Nerys but today it is Gaz Howertson who is living at Fferm.
-
Thanks very much Bri, Mull will see when he looks at the forum next and will appreciate that info
-
Thank you for putting it on the forum. Got a problem scanning at present so could not put it on myself.
Found the document among my fathers papers. Nerys (maiden name Hughes )had contacted my father who had let her have some photos.
Nerys lived next door to Tan Y Wal as a child and was a year or two older than me. In 1951 when my mother was in hospital in Liverpool I stayed with my nain at Tan y Wal for a while and remember attending Bodafon school for a few weeks. Enjoyed catching the tram to go to school.
My Uncle Dick ( Postman ) must have had Fferm on his round, as he got me my first sheep dog from there in 1950.
Thanks again for the information.
-
I remember a Nerys living both in Penrhynside and Fferm off Queens Road if it is the same Nerys she had a brother Vaughan he livid abroad cant remember where , but I think both Nerys and her husband have died in the last 5 yrs . or so .
-
Thank you for that information Robbie.
I can remember Nerys had a brother Vaughan.
