Title: Dayinsure Wales Rally GB 2018
Post by: SteveH on August 06, 2018, 07:41:51 pm
I have just heard from an informed source, information about the new look for the Rally in Llandudno, closed streets, spectator stands, parking on Bodafon Fields, staging areas on Westshore , racing  in parts of the town.

EXCITING NEW-LOOK ROUTE FOR 2018 DAYINSURE WALES RALLY GB.
Thanks to a change in the law by the Welsh Government facilitating closed-road motor sport in Wales, International Motor Sports Ltd (IMS), organiser and promoter of Britain's round of the FIA World Rally Championship, is set to overhaul the event's four-day itinerary to the advantage of both visitors and competitors.   More... https://walesrallygb.com/news/4152.php#.W2iScdJKhdi

"Sunday morning sees two forest tests in scenic Snowdonia, before the thrilling finale on the streets of Llandudno. In Visit Wales' 'Year of the Sea', the crews will race around the iconic Great Orme and then onto the closed streets of Llandudno. Apparently, it will be free to view on and around the Great Orme.

Myself, a few months ago I invested in a pair of tickets for a grandstand positioned somewhere near or on the roundabout by the Travelodge.

Lucky you, I was told there will be a 400 seat grandstand at that roundabout.

Thanks for posting that, SteveH.

It actually looks as if the grandstand will be further down Gloddaeth Avenue probably by Maelgwyn Road.

This looks like an exciting event. I have heard stories of a stage around the Orme being held in the past, I am guessing this is the first time it has happened for a good while. I am tempted by grandstand tickets but also think there will be some fantastic viewing points along the Orme, especially after the cafe heading towards the Pier. Problem is, I have no idea how bug the crowds may be.

The cafe will certainly be open and might even have their new roof-garden viewing point finished by then.  You will have to reach it by walking across the Orme, however;  the Marine Drive will be closed from around 0600 I believe. In the past it's normally been used by journalists and only a few of the public.

0600 might be a bit early for me. I might have to do a few reccies to see where I could get to.

Whatever you decide I would seriously consider walking there and back.

Taking a motor vehicle up and down the Great Orme that day will be a nightmare.

It probably wouldn't even be possible to reach the drive itself, as there will be three checks by stewards at varying points to ensure you have the correct documentation.  If you walk, however, you could drive up to a point not that far past Black Gate at around 0930 and walk from there.  Or the summit car park and walk down from there.

What a shame the number 26 bus doesn’t run on a Sunday.

Will definitely walk it, a common weekend outing for me anyhow. Where is Black Gate Ian? I am wondering if I walk up the Orme and to the church/cemetery and then the down the zig zag road onto Marine Parade, if I will be able to walk along the road to find a good vantage point.

Black Gate is on the main road up the Orme where the tram tracks cross the road at the traffic light 🚦 I do not think that you will be able to join the Marine drive,as it would not be safe for pedestrians. If you turn onto the trackway on the left before you get to the Cemetry and continue onto the open ground you should be able to find a way above the Marine Drive for a vantage point, or continue to the halfway Cafe. It’s quite a walk and a map of the Orme would help. It’s a long time since I’ve been that way, I hope nothing has changed to right of way  Happy walking 🚶‍♀️

Quiggs is right.  The best route is to turn Left before the small car park at the church and cemetery. Follow the track along until it peters out.  When the wall of the farm on your left ceases and you reach open ground, you have two choices.  Follow any of the paths that go more or less straight on until you reach a small concrete road. That leads down to  Marine Drive and then it's a short walk to the cafe car park if you turn right.

To avoid the Marine drive almost completely there's another way. Once out on the open ground and beyond the farm walls,
head north to the sides of the Orme before you reach the concrete road.  Now this takes a bit of local knowledge, so if you're at all unsure stick to the concrete road route.  However, if you're feeling brave, you'll eventually reach the steep hill that directly overlooks the cafe.  There's a track down from a boulder at the top and that takes you a grassy knoll opposite the cafe car park. That's actually the safest option in avoiding the road.

Quiggs and Ian, your directions proved spot on. I did a reccie today and found numerous viewing spots on the side of the Orme overlooking Marine Dve, spoilt for choice really. I don't imagine too many people will make the 5km trek from Llandudno on Sunday so leaving late morning should be ok, I just wonder if I will be able to walk along Marine Dve past the cafe to find the best spot. If not I will head north and find my way down the slopes of the Orme to find a good spot. Either way, it's going to be a spectacular sight seeing the cars blast past on what is a pretty unforgiving road section should they make a mistake.

I understand the stage has been held around the Orme years back, there must have been some spectacular accidents?

Only one, in fact; they're pretty good drivers.  You should be able to sneak across the road before the event starts.

Thanks Steve, some good articles at that link. It was interesting to see that the one accident was caused by the gutter along the walking path, this poses quite a risk for the drivers even if they just clip it lightly as the footage shows. It is going to be quite the spectacle provided the rain stays away!

Please note that security will be tight to ensure the safety of everyone ... the incident that SteveH has linked to back in 2001 was one where spectators were stood somewhere they had been told not to (I won't say where it was) and unfortunately got hit by a car going sideways - the driver was not aware of this until he reached the stage finish.

To answer Mondie there have been a few rolls and bumps over the years but no injuries other than the one above.

The stage has been run "wrong way" in the past for Cambrian Rally and also on  the Three Castles Classic ... having driven it myself it is quite different to going the "right" way round!

I don't know the full details for October as I won't be involved but safety is top of the list, with strict security and probably lots of no-go areas (certainly the outside of the course except for guests at RABT).  Please heed the officials instructions as the slightest thing could cause the stage to be cancelled by the Safety Delegates that traverse beforehand, or can be stopped by information from the radio crews.

Recently the Marine Drive roadway has been inhabited by many sheep and goats, of which there are more and more. Has anyone thought to ensure some kind of safety measures with the thought that they could easily cause an accident with loss of life to both them and the drivers.?

That's a good point, Nem; last time on the Orme the Rally had a safety car which made several circuits building up to the actual rally.

If that is going to be so I hope they are on the ball, these poor animals can shift rapidly, especially if frightened. Lovely sight for the spectators if anything untoward occurs and something gets killed.
Sorry to sound like Senna the Soothsayer, but the animals live here, be they farm animals or wildlife and don't need the noise and danger.
I would think that given the amount of ovine occupants of the Gt Orme someone will be given a thankless task. There are now too many to be controlled.

Hope everyone concerned can exit their properties during their allotted 5 minute slot . >:(

Mrs H. Went to VC last night, with friends, who told of various problems, from roads closed ( parts of Mostyn St ?)  bus routes changed, and various stops out of service, even the drivers did not know what was going on, ........ Monday night seems a bit early for all the changes  ???
Title: Re: Dayinsure Wales Rally GB 2018
Post by: Cambrian on October 02, 2018, 05:46:41 pm
Things do seem a bit chaotic.  The Arriva seemed unaware that part of Mostyn Street was closed as this did not appear on the schedule of streets and drivers did not know what alternative route to take.  Passengers were being dropped off at Clifton Road rather than the Palladium.  Signs appeared on all bus timetable posts saying the bus stop was closed and for people to get the bus at the Law Courts.  These were still in situ until mid-afternoon today causing a fair bit of confusion.  I hear the Taxi folk are not too happy and there will be a temporary rank in Llewelyn Avenue on Saturday night.  Presumably folk will have to wander from Upper Mostyn Street to the Court to get the 5 or the 12B at home time.

OMG I can imagine what Llewelyn Avenue will be like, the taxis last night were frantic, especially down Clement Ave and across to Deganwy Ave, they tend to be in rather a rush normally, but it just seemed as though they couldn't find where to go.
I haven't spoken to anyone yet who can fully understand the map and timetable delivered to us all, in fact a neighbour was hopping mad to read that she would be allowed a 5 minute egress slot and must be ready and have made herself known to a marshal no later than 7.55 am.
F.O.I has informed us that Conwy CBC has given £110K to this event.

...Still worried about the poor animals round the Orme.

We were talking to a couple of the visiting marshals yesterday afternoon and they informed us the sale of grandstand tickets for Gloddaeth Street has been so popular that they will be having two grandstands there and not one.

I agree about the confusion this morning.

I drove down Mostyn Street at 9.15am and could not go any further than the NatWest Bank and I was also unable to turn right into St George’s Place.

However, five minutes later I returned to Mostyn Street at the roundabout and travelled straight down from the Carlton pub to Trinity Church - no problem.

What is unclear to us for Sunday morning parking is whether or not the two car parks further down Gloddaeth Avenue including Maelgwyn Road Car Park will be open and the same about Gloddaeth Avenue itself from Great Ormes Road towards Deganwy Avenue?

Maybe it will be best to walk there and back except it could be too much for Mrs R at present.

Hopefully, everything will become clearer before Sunday.

Btw, I have had an exchange of emails with the organisers about pre-purchasing a £9 programme.

They suggested I visit Deeside even though I informed them I live in Llandudno.

Anyway, it seems they are unavailable in Llandudno until Sunday.

What I imagine is that every space around will be full, as the prom is to be a 'no go' area, as are many of the streets in the town which are peppered with large red notices threatening dire results if cars are left there. Wonder where they will dump all the ones which have to be forcibly removed???

Post by: Cambrian on October 03, 2018, 08:17:48 am
I think I will avoid Town on Saturday - I wonder why all the stuff in Gloddaeth Street could not be located on the prom where it would have less impact on usual activities.

Also it would to my mind be safer there, and cause less hassle to people trying to work. The 'Street Stage' is actually on Sunday, so I should avoid town both days !

I am led to believe that the reason for the early road and bus changes on Monday night, were due to an arranged  "course inspection"  for the rally crews and drivers.

Wondering which rally cars you can spot racing around North Wales this weekend?

The flags have been waved and the 2018 Wales Rally GB is underway once again.
The event will see scores of suped-up vehicles descend on North Wales as they compete in the battle for the WRC title.

All cars were to be cleared from there and the central reservation of Gloddaeth by 4pm or they would be towed away. Marshalls were walking round at 3pm slapping large red notices on the cars in the street ( and it was full ).The car parks nearer West Shore were also full, so where people were ending up I hate to imagine.

Great coverage on Channel 5,(over 3 hours)thanks Bri. for the heads up, what a fantastic event, walking around the various stands and demos, everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves, good atmosphere all round, superb advert for NW and Llandudno, this was much more than just a race, I can see this going from strength to strength.

Missed it but did have an excited (and in Norfok) mum telling me after that she’d seen cars racing the “wrong way” round the Orme on tv after the event. I also believe that the coverage had good shots , including the Litlle Orme which she enjoyed as familiar scenery.  My own curiosity question.  Anyone any idea what speeds these highly tuned cars with top drivers can reach round Marine Drive?

Yes; they reached over 100mph at places on the downhill stretch.  Have to say I was a tad miffed that they only really started the live coverage when the cars had passed the lighthouse.  They showed one full circuit while they were waiting for the thing to start then it only showed live images from just past the lighthouse.

... to give you an idea of how fast they went round the Orme winner Sebastien Ogier recorded a time of 3 minutes 59.4 seconds from start (just before the West Shore toll house) to finish (just before turning onto Prom), total distance of 7.43km - so my my calculations that's an AVERAGE speed of about 70mph.

... this is the first time the stage has been run at that length but what I can tell you is that when run "normally" from Pier end to the shelter just above Millionaire's Row the record time is 2 minutes 52 seconds, recorded quite a few years ago.

... full results of the WRGB can be found on www.eWRC-results.com (http://www.eWRC-results.com) - click on the WRGB logo or scroll down the list if you're looking in a  few days time or later!

For stage 21, DVT, we were sitting in the grandstand in Gloddaeth Street and there was a fan using a speed gun near us to measure the speeds coming towards us from the Carlton Roundabout and he recorded speeds of up to 78mph.

I also noticed the winner, Seb Ogier, completed the last stage 23 from the start just before the West Shore Toll House to the North Shore Toll House in only 3 minutes and 14 seconds and that time included a few chicanes to manoeuvre.  :)

For comparison, I have still not managed to do that walking in under one hour. :(

I heard that a lot of litter had been left on the Gwydir forest section, and thought unfortunately with any event you will have to have a "Clean Up" and this is obviously easier in a town setting, but I am afraid the situation has escalated, the residents of Gwydir are disgusted, and with over 40 photos on FB, these " spectators " have let the the rally down, my own view, if you can manage to carry it to your camp/viewing area, then take it away with you.

I have posted a couple of comments from FB, ....and two photos, showing a very tidy campsite, with the tent left behind, and the contents of said tent..................other photos show a full sized BBQ, and many of the disposable type, chairs, over turned porta loos.etc. many sites with campfires surrounded by damaged trees.

"thanks for visiting Llanrwst this is the carnage you've left behind in just a 200m section at Hafna in the Gwydir Forest. The rest of the forest is the same and worse in places. It'll be impossible to clean up. This is just trackside, idiots have chucked cans, bottles and packaging deep into the forest. This event just encourages chavs to wreck the environment"

"I am absolutely fuming with the rubbish that has been left in our Gwydir Forest, you are scum of the earth and a disgrace to human society. Is this what Rally GB want to be part of?! Bottle thrown all over the place, human poo and raw meat , eggs beer etc etc "

I too am absolutely disgusted that these so called "fans" left such rubbish but it is not something new ... a friend of mine lives in a house in the forest and was actually blocked in for the event ... he has, in the past, commented on the amount of litter left after running and cycle events in the forest.

I have to admit that as we walked the dog on Sunday night the litter on Gloddaeth had been removed, not so the road closures as promised, nor the one way systems which were still being collected. The row of toilets by the red Queen had gone by Monday lunchtime, so despite all the inconvenience to people in the area trying to run their businesses the clearing up was well executed.

That is good to hear Nemesis ... I also believe all the animals on the Orme were un-harmed - unlike the poor sheep that got chased over the edge by a dog last week (nothing to do with the rally) - irresponsible dog owner giving dog-owners a bad name.

Yes DVT I was worried about the animals, noise tends to make them unpredictable and there could have been a nasty accident had one bolted. As for the other episode, words fail me,............

I was very pleased it did not rain last Sunday especially after paying £40 in advance for 2 x seats in a covered grandstand.

Perhaps they are good at weather predictions  :-\    ..................... would you use the grandstand again ?

SteveH, due to their popularity there was a second uncovered grandstand at the junction of Gloddaeth Street and Chapel Street, which we moved into for the afternoon stage.

Yes, we would use the grandstand again because standing for six hours is not an attractive prospect for us and, as you can see, the view is definitely better.

The worlds best rally drivers are set to return to North Wales again in 2019.

Just weeks after a successful 2018 Dayinsure wales Rally GB, organisers have already revealed the event will be returning in 2019.
While a route is yet to be revealed the 2019 Wales Rally GB dates have been set for October 3 to 6, 2019.
On Twitter, the official Wales Rally GB account, said: A date for the diary - Dayinsure Wales Rally GB will be on the 3-6 October 2019.
"Who is coming back for more mud and excitement?"

This year's event was labelled a huge success and included a UK first as rally cars were able to take to public roads.
Dayinsure Wales Rally GB Managing Director, Ben Taylor said it had been an amazing weekend and was a great way to finish with Llandudno and the Great Orme providing the perfect backdrop.
Taylor said: “We made history of our own as well this weekend, bringing World Championship motor sport to public streets for the first time in Britain.

“Llandudno looked amazing and it was wonderful to see so many spectators coming out to experience the WRC. We had amazing crowds all weekend.”   ref Pioneer

The countdown has begun to this year's Wales Rally GB in October.

The 2019 FIA World Rally Championship held it's official launch on the weekend at the Autosport International show at the NEC in Birmingham.

All four major factory-backed WRC teams – Citroën, Ford, Hyundai and Toyota – unveiled their latest competition cars and their new 2019 driver line-ups in front of huge crowds on Saturday.

The 10 month global adventure blasts off in Monte Carlo in just a few weeks’ time and concludes in Australia during November.

In between, competitors face epic showdowns throughout Europe, South and Central America, and Asia including a return to the UK for Wales Rally GB on October 3 to 6.

WRC promoter managing director, Oliver Ciesla, said: "I’m really, really excited. As we saw last year, the competition is now so close between the drivers and the teams that this season is all set to be the best for a long, long time.

While the presence of British drivers Kris Meeke and Elfyn Evans, now team-leader at the M-Sport Ford team, drew huge applause among local fans in Birmingham, it was the presence of the sport’s top gun Sébastien Ogier that attracted most attention.

Last year, the outstanding Frenchman became the first man in history to win five Rally GB's en route to a sixth World Championship crown after a nail-biting finale Down Under.

Since then, though, the reigning champion has rejoined crest-fallen Citroën and was making his first public appearance for the French team in front of the crowds at the NEC.

Ogier said: "It’s been great to come here and to give so many fans a chance to see the cars in their new colours ahead of the Monte Carlo Rally.

“This is the start of a big challenge and we face very fierce competition, so it will be tough… but I’ve never been afraid of a challenge and I’m really looking forward to this new one. Every time you start something new in life it’s always exciting,” he grinned.
As for his chances of stretching his Rally GB winning record to six, Ogier was predictably circumspect.
He said: “Wales is a very special event for me.

"I have managed to master the very tricky conditions several times now. Hopefully, I will be competitive once again in October.”

Tickets for this year’s Wales Rally GB will go on sale in the spring when the 2019 competitive route is announced.
