???Just been on Oscar and some nice person has been slagging of the volunteers for going round all the buisnesses and asking for a small donation towards the, entertainment, the steam engines, the bands, the ever ending demands from CCBC [STREET CLEANING ,LICENSES,BARRIERS]and in return a sticker is given to stick in their window, which i believe a few have given but do not wish to display their sticker. This person is claiming its a bully tatic and they have paid their rates for 20 years, what this has to do with the extravaganza is beyond me,surely there is no one in this town that thinks any council help this organisation. The town council started the event 25 years ago and quickly realised it is hard work and off loaded it,they used to give 5,000 thousand pounds towards it,soon it went down to 1,000 and now they realised that it was their little baby and now manage 3,000 ,which is good value considering there is not a hotel room left in town 6 weeks before the event. Now we all know it is loathed by a few locals and councillors but tourism is why the town excists so im glad we can fend off the people who are trying to turn the town into a bedsit paradise.

Well said, Wrex. Tourism is the only reason the town exists. $walesflag$

Any one else been threatened by the extravaganza taffia?
If you don't donate you wont get this sticker to put in your cafe/shop window and it will show everyone you've not given anything to us.
Excuse me, not given?
I've paid rent and rates in this town for 20 odd years, not given anything?
I'm here through the winter when it's quiet, I have a half day off a week and pay 2 wages.
What a bloody cheek to threaten me in such a way.

Dear Sir/Madam
In reply to your comment titled "Extravaganza Taffia",you were only approached for a donation and it was not with the threat of "if you don't buy this sticker and put it in your window everyone will know you have not supported us" as that is not true as the Llandudno Victiorian Extravaganza have had a few supporters donate but have chosen not to put the sticker in their window so that blows that arguement out of the water, secondly yes you and all the rest of us have paid our rates and rents "over 20 odd years" but this is an organisation that your and my rates and rents do not pay for as this is not run by the council as you probably so wrongly think as the event relies totally on donations and sponsorship, this Organisation is run by a volunteer committee, that donate their time and effort freely and do not get paid, I can see your arguement next is going to be "but they've got councillors on the Committee" and yes they do but they like the non-councillors donate their time and effort freely, the council has no bearing on the decisions made within their organisation.
I realise that not everybody likes or loves the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganaza and some would like to see the back of it all together but the organisation does bring a lot of trade in to the town over the may bank holiday weekend and again you could say that "I've always been busy over that weekend" but then you will have unless you have records going back to before the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza came along 25 years ago that will be an unsubstanciated argument as the event was introduced to bring trade in over the may bank holiday and kick start the summer season for all of the businesses in to Llandudno.
this event needs your support so if they do approach you for an donation please do so as that donation goes towards the running costs, a lot of people make money out of the event and you will be one of them either directly or indirectly.
ps if you want to know who wrote this and who we are come to a meeting and find out the truth
Many Thanks

Anyone got a copy of last years Extravaganza Accounts? Therein lies the answers and the reasons why donations are required.
I have no personal knowledge as I am one of those who would like it moved from the Town Centre.
-
I don't care if it is moved from the town centre, to the Prom.... or even the whole length of Gloddaeth Ave from West Shore... I just love it, and I always have.
It needs to stay.
I don't benefit from it either... its a low takings day for me.... but I just enjoy it.

$wales Now Yorkie lets not go through all this again, unfortunatley the town was only built for tourists from England to enjoy the Welsh air so don;t go trying to put down the buisiest weekend of the year .We welcome the English to retire here as well ,but not to try and change thr ethos of the town. Let's get ready to rumble
-
Two years ago there was a wrestling tent.... my father in law (who is an ex body-builder and wrestler) and I couldn't resist paying our £2.50 to see the show.
It was pretty brutal stuff.
Two very well muscled 'wrestlers' knocked the hell out of two young lads who were ''planted'' in the crowd outside.
No real wrestling went on... but those young lads will never be the same again.

;D I just had a thought,a lot of hoteliers used to tell me that the extravaganza did them no good as it was a bank holiday,so i had a little try at booking a room for easter and booking a room for the extravaganza, guess what ,still loads of space for easter ,extravaganza ,no chanca and all hotels had a 3 night limit, not for easter,so iam glad to have helped a lot of buisnesses over the years.

Fester's Mum has never seen the Extravaganza, and I urged her to hurry up and book.
She contacted her favourite 3 hotels, they were all busy.. but all still had some rooms.
She plumped for the Marlborough ... she likes that best. Great food in there.... good entertainment every night too.

Just been browsing the coach firms to see how much interest there is and some firms are bringing coaches in every day, most are from the midlands and Manchester but a few daytrips from as far afield as Kettering,Leicester ,Goole fair journeys and with the two special trains in over the weekend it all looks good. Ibelieve there is a new website being developed which will not go amiss. ;):)

Wrex:
Who wrote the "Extravaganza History" on the Extravaganza website?
http://victorian-extravaganza.co.uk/about-2/extravaganza-history/ (http://victorian-extravaganza.co.uk/about-2/extravaganza-history/)
-
The last paragraph aptly sums up the present situation as far as I can see.
"At this time The Extravaganza had sufficient attendance to attract the attention of modern funfair operators. Changes to the Committee left them with little choice to allow the Heritage focus to be diluted by the ingress of modern fairground attractions offering substantial payment to attend. This dilution peaked in 2006 when public opinion said that the whole event had become nothing more than a modern street fair, squeezing out the Traditional Entertainment that carried popular support."

I hope someone remembers to update the entertainment page.

There was an ad. in the Guardian earlier this week saying that National Rail will be doing essential maintenance work over Easter weekend and the following week end so visitors may be delayed. They are such idiots they have the whole year to choose from but decide to do it at a Bank Holiday and then people complain that the roads are jammed.
-
They do it on a Bank Holiday are far less people are using the trains on those days, apparently.

:-[ I must apologies to those of you who where expecting a new website up and running on Tuesday,i have been trying to find out if this is the fault of the old administrator or a hitch with the new but it is very frustrating with the event so close and people being given 2009 details. :'(

Wrex, if you have all the details of events, dates, times etc, you could always PM them to me and i can set up a special thread for them so that visitors can view the info on here.

The situation with the Extravaganza website is getting more and more ridiculous as the event draws ever closer. Things like the Park & Ride scheme are still prominently featured, even though Wrex says it will not operate this year:
http://victorian-extravaganza.co.uk/park-and-ride-2/ (http://victorian-extravaganza.co.uk/park-and-ride-2/)
This will cause complete confusion - absolutely crazy! :o
Can I ask...who is responsible for this disaster? The craziest thing of all is the site is written in WordPress, which means that adding/editing pages etc is simple - as easy as writing a post on this Forum. A good hour's work could sort this website out.
-
:( The site was run by Paul Williams of PAMYA ,he has now been paid off but appears to slowing down the handover to our own Ian,so unfortunatly until he hands over the revelent information Ian cannot move. :'(
-
That's not very nice of Pamaya, I only hope they are more efficient with their other clients otherwise no-one will use them. To be honest, I'd imagined that they were maintaining the Extravaganza website free of charge since it's hardly that big a job....
-
How do you enter a car in the transport festival, I've just looked at the (out of date?) website and do not know, or do you just turn up in a classic car? ???

What a selfish man; given that he is so obviously unreliable, I will certainly never use his company Pamaya for any work.

I understand there is a lot more to this particular issue and Mr Williams.

I believe Wrex is the owner of the llandudno-extravaganza.co.uk domain name - as such, you can have it transferred to another hosting company if you wish.
-
:) Dave you are correct and i have signed it over to another, its a shame we were let down with the web and the programme last year but you live and learn.Anyway lets hope we have a successful one,the towns traders make a killing and the committee will start planning 2012,probably with no thanks and as normal not much CCBC help. D)

Has a programme been done?
Yes it costs £2 and is quite good. There is a flyer too with a map of the town showing the parade route, stages, steam engine locations etc and local advertisers. The flyer is free and 20, 000 have been printed and are being distributed from this weekend.
-
We on the Forum appreciate you and the Committee's hard work, Wrex! :)

Yes, &well& Wrex and ££$ with this year's Extravaganza. $walesflag$
-
We on the Forum appreciate you and the Committee's hard work, Wrex!
Absolutely! 'Tis a thankless task and if it wasn't for those like yourself who are prepared to give up countless hours and days to making sure it happens each year, the town would be the worse for it, of that I'm sure.
-
We have just returned to North Wales along the A55 and passed many large fairground rides in transit.
Several were parked up for the night and already filled one lay-by near Rhuallt Hill.
I know Llandudno Extravaganza starts on Friday this year for the fairground rides so I would have expected the vendors to begin their journey to Llandudno tomorrow afternoon and not today.
-
:)Most of the rides Bri will have only pulled down monday night so of course they are going to head straight here after their last show, with them setting up through the night tomorrow no sense in wasting diesel going home. $walesflag$
-
;D All my volunteer collectors assemble by the tram in Clonmel st 11 30am and i will issue you all with collecting tins and tabards,im just not sure if i have enought to go round.Seriously i would appreciate any help any of the days,it will be for 1 hour eachday, please. :-*
-
Actually for people like travelling fairground workers, a layby is their home. I class myself in that group having been a long distance lorry and coach driver and market trader at various times
-
I know Llandudno Extravaganza starts on Friday this year for the fairground rides so I would have expected the vendors to begin their journey to Llandudno tomorrow afternoon and not today.
In past years the fairground operators would make their way to Llandudno immediately after they'd finished a a previous venue. That often meant they would arrive in the area on the Tuesday or Wednesday, and 'camp up'.
-
The advance party has been camped on Bodafon Fields for a couple of days now.
-
You usually see a lot of them parked along Builder Street as well.
-
For those who are interested:-
-
After a struggle in the traffic to get down town, past all the vehicles parked on double white line roads ( with no policeman in sight), past the Camper Maternity Wing and the Transport Show, we finally saw some of the Victorian Extravaganza. I have never seen anything LESS Victorian in my life. It was just a heaving mass of people all struggling to get somewhere but going nowhere. As far as I am concerned any local who ventured into town to join in the melee must have been out of their mind, as indeed I was, or more correctly, we were!
Needless to say our sojourn into the heart of Llandudno was short-lived, and we were glad to get away to the sanctury of the RSPB reserve in the Junction. Peace, perfect peace!
Bring back the Olde Victorian Week-end that we used to have. PLEASE!
-
We are really enjoying the Transport festival, some great vehicles there and well organised, we'll be back again tomorrow. We had a look at the Victorian extravaganza, not really our sort of thing apart from the superb steam engines, charabangs etc, however it's brought lots of people into the town, hopefully spending loads of money, so for that reason I'm fully in favour of it, mind you I do agree it's not Victorian but it is Elizabethan :D
-
;) The event works well ,hence the amount of people who keep on coming,i fully appreciate people have their views, but Llandudno excists for tourism and i will resist CCBC and others from turning Llandudno into a quite retirement place. :-*
-
My wife and I went into Llandudno today, no trouble parking and the town was packed and happy, the parade was great and everyone having a good time.
We drove down to the show field, again, no problems and delighted in the stalls and show items.
All in all excellent, for the town, visitors and locals alike.
Why, oh why, is there always someone ready to whine?
Is there a whiners school where they learn to whine or does it come naturally?
Many thanks to all who gave up their time to make it a great success.
-
Yes, a fantastic event and lots of people obviously gave up their spare time to help out with the organisation, well done to all of them. :)
Think I saw Wrex In Clonmel Street, resisted the temptation to go over and have a chat about the Xmas Lights with him! 8)

I agree 100% $good$ We've got Penrhyn Bay as the nice 'quiet retirement place' :D Well done to all involved, especially the transport festival, we'll enter ourt Spitfire next year!
-
I actually think that the Extravaganza is bigger (and better) than any previous ones.
Not Very Victorian I agree, but there would be a lot less to see and do if it was.
Lots more big, scary rides in the Trinity Square, / Augusta area... yep, definitely more this year.
Well done to all concerned.

It takes all sorts to make a World and amongst them are some good ordinary people who do not like such events as the Extravaganza. I certainly am not on my own. However I do consider that the event just takes over the town. Roads are jammed and God forbid if there was a major fire or other emergency incident! Where was the "risk assessment" because I saw no evidence of any having been applied.
I am pleased that many people have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy the events and that the town is benefitting thereby. But, it's not for me thank you!
And as a final comment - whinging (not whining) is very useful as it stimulates discussion and comment from the opposite and same viewpoints! That's why I make my comments, I could just sit back and say nowt! _))* Now you can tell me that is exactly what I should do. ZXZ

The Parade runs from Clonmel Street along the Prom to Prince Edward Square, then down past the Carlton roundabout into Gloddaeth Street, turning into Chapel Street and then back along Lloyd Street to the Town Hall.
For photos, you'll need the sun at your back, I stood at the junction of Prom/Prince Edward Square to get my Parade pics.
-
I absolutely love Fairground Organs
I was saying to Fester yesterday that it would be good if a Fairground Organ could be sited on the Prom by the Cenotaph on Summer weekend afternoons. That's the sort of thing the Town Council should be organising.
This one, built by Marenghi & Co. of Paris in 1910, was my favourite:

I was saying to Fester yesterday that it would be good if a Fairground Organ could be sited on the Prom by the Cenotaph on Summer weekend afternoons. That's the sort of thing the Town Council should be organising.
This one, built by Marenghi & Co. of Paris in 1910, was my favourite:
I like them to look at and its clever engineering but I can't stand the racket they make :rage: Many years ago I used to go on holiday to Porthmadog with a friend and in my car we took it in turns with the cassette player, i had all my rock music, Pink Floyd etc which he hated and he had fairground organs and brass band cassettes which I hated :rage: L0L
-
I assume they use a card reader to play each piece of music?
I heard the Marenghi organ playing the Tom Jones classic 'Delilah' and the Dads Army theme tune whilst I was on the Prom!

It's sort of an early digital code, very clever it is too, shame my ears can't stand it :'( :D

;)We;ll get back to the xmas lights on tuesday,as for you Yorkie we would be at a lose without yours and everyone elses views and im glad we all have different views and we can agree to disagree. Z**

I was walking home at 11pm last night, via Upper Mostyn St.
I was struck by just how terrible the mess and litter from the Extravaganza was.
Cartons, tins, papers, blowing all over the road, and ...it was blowing all over other streets too.
Is there some sort of over night clean up process which is done?
If not, then the problem will get compounded with the next days rubbish...and so on.
It was pretty bad, I can tell you.
-
The food litter is the worst--and nappies.
A good sweep and then some heavy rain might shift the sticky messes up and down. The fairground must upset alot of stomachs-- I'll say no more

I don't know.....perhaps older folk giving-up playing squash and leaving activities like that to the younger generation?
-
Went to have a walk round the "Victorian" Extravaganza today - saw about half a dozen people in Victorian costume and a huge fairground!! Think the word "Victorian" should be dropped from the title!
-
Trojan said: I don't know.....perhaps older folk giving-up playing squash and leaving activities like that to the younger generation?
Now that's a game I have never played, and never wanted to. Too many young men seem to die on the squash court. Doesn't Oscar play squash?
A medical study indicated that squash is a physiologically demanding sport which places a severe strain on the myocardium for considerable periods of time and is capable of generating cardiac arrhythmias. The findings are particularly important for an individual already at risk of sudden death from coronary artery disease or structural cardiovascular abnormalities.
I can't winge about something that is of no interest to me. So maybe I should winge about having nothing to winge about! :rage:

Late afternoon in Upper Mostyn St,
Just captured 2 pictures on my phone, First one of Darren (Fountains Bar Manager) and Ian enjoying the blooming scary high chairlift ''sky-ride''
Picture 2 is Mrs Fester and rriend from Llandudno, Tony.. on the same rise. Both came off feeling rather queasy.
-
Braver men than I !!
-
:-[ Well Fester the council clean the streets in the morning and a very good job they do,the same as they do every morning of the year, now the traders pay a lot of rates to have their litter picked up and then CCBC charge the Extravaganza again to pick up the same litter. The fact that tourists don;t throw the traders rappers in the bin but on the floor can;t be helped,as in Colwyn Bay promday im sure there is a mess there but do CCBC charge the organizers CCBC ,THEMSELVES THE SAME AS THEY CHARGE US.All loses for promday are paid by the Marketing dept of CCBC while a County CLL runs the fairground for a very small rent, taxpayers money down the drain. I believe he used to. ;D

White Rabbit, sorry to disagree but on my personal visit I was struck by how many people were dressed in Victorian costumes---far more than I have seen in previous years. Perhaps just a coincedence when I was there.
-
I too saw plenty of people dressed in victorian clobber, also period vehicles and fairground rides too !, I guess some people need shadowy figures in top hats and cloaks murdering prostitutes for complete authenticity! WWW

Ha, brilliant.... I think that particular 'exhibit' was happening behind the train station... L0L

There are far too many shadowy figures around these parts as there is, granted , they are not murderers of prostitutes !, having said that 1 or 2 are not a million miles away from such activities i'm sure!,

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang always seemed to be part of Llandudno Extravaganza and it does not look as if we shall see it in Llandudno ever again.
The original Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is due to fetch up to £1.2million at a car auction next month.
The magical motor – described as “the most famous car in the world” by Los Angeles-based auctioneers Profiles in History – is still roadworthy but unlikely to fly.
Built by the Ford Racing Team for the 1968 movie starring Dick Van Dyke, the car is still registered with the “GEN 11” plates it carried in the film.
-
What a shame, I guess Pierre Picton decided it was time to call it a day. :(

I now concur, sorry, the information given me was incorrect as I was told it was one of the other six models (the one with wings) that was for sale in L.A.
Incidentally they all bore the reg plate GEN 11 but only one could use it road legally.

I'm glad you enjoyed the pics. :) I took over 1,500 photos of the Extravaganza but I ran out of enthusiasm for going through them all last night!

DaveR said: I'm glad you enjoyed the pics. I took over 1,500 photos of the Extravaganza but I ran out of enthusiasm for going through them all last night!
Just imagine trying to do that with an old Victorian plate camera!!! :o
Thank goodness for digital, would have been hard even using film, to get that many shots in.
-
Thanks all; it is very easy with digital to just keep snapping - no need to worry about having to buy more film. The D700 can also take 5 photos a second if you hold down the shutter button, so the photo count can easily mount up quickly.
-
The "rapid" facility is very useful and I use it if I am tying to get a shot of an animal or bird because they are so prone to moving just as you're framing the shot.. Modern editting is very useful too, as you can crop out unwanted background and do 1001 other alterations if you want to. In fact you can finish up with something that is completely different to what you started with! Great fun! :D
I'm not up to DaveR's standard yet though! ;)
-
That's nice of you to say, Yorkie. :) I think the best photo editing program is Adobe Lightroom:

Thanks for all the Extravaganza photos, Dave. I was away so it's nice to see what I missed.
-
And don't forget that this whole idea of photo editing is considered by many photographers as a form of cheating
I don't think that's such a prevalent view any more, Mike. And even in the old days, photographers were constantly tweaking their shots, using enlargers, hand shading, differential development times and such like; now, it's simply a lot easier, and anyone can play.
And no amount of tweaking can make a bad shot decent. The shot - focus, framing and composition - has to be right before the tweaking starts. You can fiddle with the composition, but the focus is pretty well fixed.

I like the ERF with the Ruston engine on the flatbed.
It's a Ruston Model V.C.4
120B.H.P at 430R.P.M
Airless cold starting atomiser.
This engine was installed March 1926 to drive a 550 volt D.C dynamo supplying power to the slate mine on Honister Pass, Cumbria.
Last worked 1973 when it was replaced by a modern generator.
Restored to Full working order by the late T.Owen snr and T.Owen jnr, Penmachno, North Wales

I do hope the new committee manage to pull this years event off, im concerned things have been left a bit late and there are too many people trying to make money out of the event.
-
Is there some doubt about this years Victorian Extravaganza, Wrex?
-
Fester you should know me by now, my glass is always half empty, things just seem a bit slow but im sure they will get it all sorted in time.

All is well then (potentially)
Here is a glass that is half full, and then empty... and then totally full again... Z**

I will be going away for the few days of the Extravaganza as usual - just can't stand the noise, the crowds, the ballyhoo and everything associated with it! Good luck to the organisers! ZXZ

YORKIE WITHOUT BEING RUDE,WHY DID YOU MOVE TO A TOURIST TOWN?
-
WE ARE ALL ENTITLED TO OUR LIKES AND DISLIKES.
WHEN I MOVED HERE THERE WAS NO EXTRAVAGANZA!

Suggest you tell Wrex also! HE STARTED THE SHOUTING!
And Wrex you ARE being rude!
At least if I don't like the Extravaganza, I get to Hell out of the way! I think that you will find that there are many of the Townsfolk who hate the Exravaganza as much as I do. Unfortunately they fail to voice their opinions and concerns.
You gripe on and on about the lights but so far you have achieved ef all with all your ranting and raving. Maybe you should get out of town at Christmas.
-
Cheers Yorkie,you took that well.

Was it supposed to be a joke? In rather bad taste as far as I am concerned.

I look forward immensely to seeing Yorkie and Wrex on the Llandudno Town Council, working harmoniously together. L0L L0L

When I lived in Penrhyn Bay, I didn't find the Extravaganza a problem at all. If you wished to avoid it, you just went and did your shopping etc in Rhos or Colwyn Bay that weekend.
-
So what you are saying Dave, is that we should hide away from Llandudno for the whole of the week-end and not venture forth to ASDA, M & S, Debenhams or any of the other stores that have chosen to operate in our Town Centre. Deny ourself the right to have a coffee in one of the Town Centre Cafes, to not venture forth to meet our friends? You seem to be asking a lot! That is why I prefer to leave the town altogether, as indeed some other people do.
I also remember when I lived on Gloddaeth Avenue and due to the Jams an ambulance was unable to get down the road to someone who was desperately in need of urgent medical attention.
God knows what we would do if there was a major fire or incident in the town centre!
As for Wrex and the Council, he has a different political colour to myself so we will no doubt have disagreements >>> on many matters, except decorative lighting, of course! VV
Did anyone get upset by all the "fecking" on Mrs Brown's Boys on TV last night? _))*
-
I can see why someone might leave town for the weekend if they lived in central Llandudno and didn't wish to put up with the noise etc but not if they lived outside the town? I came into town every day of the Extravaganza last year to do photography and had coffee with friends in the usual haunts every day with no problems. In my view, it was great to see 100,000+ people visiting and enjoying our town. $good$

Ah! But there lies the rub. You are young and can maybe tollerate the pushing and shoving, the noise and the fumes and the pickpockets. Not me, so I prefer to go away and leave the place to those who enjoy it.
For those who enjoy the Extravaganza, let them continue to do so, but for me it is one of my very enjoyable holidays with plenty of sunshine, great food and a thoroughly fantastic time.

I'm with Yorkie.
At the risk of repeating myself why not put everything on the promenade? I've never understood why it has to go in Mostyn Street clogging everywhere up. The buses could then run normally and the racket would be away from everyone except the hotels on the front. Do away with that stupid parade with those dreadful smelly steam engine things, polluting the atmosphere and probably collapsing drains and problem solved.

Well its getting close and im glad to say it seems to be getting more popular,on the Saturday there will be three special trains coming in,one a steam special so the event is doing something right for these train companies to invest.Iknow me and Yorkie disagree about it but its a well attended event and brings much joy to the local children.I think this year you will see more changes,i don;t agree with some but if it looks betterand makes more money then i will be happy. The committee need the funds to bring in the entertainers and the traction engines, some people thought that the traction engines came as part of the Transport Festival, wrong the extravaganza brings in all those organs, trction engines and all entertainers from magicians,to marching bands,at quite a considerable expense so please be a little less unfair on the funfair which funds the whole event.
-
With the chairman and event co-ordinator having resigned the event is in turmoil and unfortunately the event will be a very small event this year.Mr Scarratt having had little support from his committee,CCBC and the local press he finds it too much to take on alone, its very bad timing but everything comes to an end and i think this now has.
-
This is awful news. Cannot the Vice-Chair and the committee run it? It should never be a one man band, surely?
-
Hurrah!
-
It's hardly good news, a lot of businesses depend upon it for an early boost to their trading. People's livelihoods may be at stake. $angry$
-
I will not be sorry to see the end of the Victorian Extravaganza in its present (immediate past) form but it is a pity if it is not able to have its final fling just so that like minded people can realise what a relief it will be to be able to enjoy a quiet May Bank Holiday.
I would like to see the return of the olde Victorian Extravaganza with ordinary people dressing up and parading about the town and some of the small side shows and barrel organs that were part of those long lost times. The traders will still benefit if they choose to participate in a parade of floats or in some other constructive way as does happen in other UK resorts.
I wonder if Wrex will go along with me on this one? L0L
-
A 'quiet Bank holiday' in a tourist town...can you see what's wrong with that remark, Yorkie? &shake&
People's livelihoods are more important than your peace and quiet.
-
DaveR - thanks for your rebuke-
The word quiet does not neccessarily mean silent and that is not what I am suggesting. There must be a level of noise whenever people are enjoying themselves but as we are not a Blackpool, or a Southend-on-Sea with their large amusement areas the sound level could be, and should be, tolerable.
If I stay in the town instead of disappearing for a few days, then my money would also contribute to the local economy!
-
Yorkie i thought you would be pleased,i hope you have enought money to put into every cafe ,pub, hotel and shop in the weekend. The event has always been the one peron who runs the funfair and he sorts out the licences, road closures, barriers, police, and of course now the street cleaning sothere you have it,as far as i can see the event will come to an end this year on a very small and sad end.The only way i can see out is by one of the main funfair operators running the fair for the extravaganza committee, lets hope this is feasable.

There will be many more people who will be not only pleased but absolutely delighted and over the moon - not least of all will in fact be some of the shopkeepers!
The Extravaganza only covers 4 days, or just over 1% of the year. Two days are lost due to the erecting and striking of the rides etc. so all in all the shopkeeper's gain, if any, is about 1/2 to 3/4 % of their annual T/O. The main businesses that do well are the cafes, food, ice cream shops and the street burger stalls. The pick-pockets have a great time too!
As an ex guest house owner, I appreciate the need for the Hotels and Guest houses to fill their beds - a bed without an A*** in it today can never be recovered - but they should be able to rely on their own marketing efforts and not just rely on getting the side effect of other attractions.
Finally, I suggest that the olde style Exravaganza could be made more interesting and enjoyable and attract people to the town without the noise and disruption we have suffered over the past few years. A bit of Market Research may be able to provide a few answers and opinions.
-
I've been thinking about this. (Always a dangerous thing for me to be doing)
The Extravaganza (love it or hate it) is a massively important event, and if there is such a big threat to its existence then surely there is a process that could be followed to salvage the situation.
All I have seen on this subject is a few unofficial posts on this forum.
So, is the threat THAT great? If so, I would suggest the following course of action.
The Committee members should put out an appeal to the local community, asking for people with management experience and spare time to devote, to come forward. Heaven knows there are lots of such people in this area.
Then, and more importantly, spell out what is actually needed to be done.
Personally, from the little I have seen, it is made out to be something akin to having to eat a whole raw cow for dinner.
But when faced with something as daunting as that, simply break the tasks down into a list which can be shared out, and apportion responsibilities to those who come forward.
Even I was wondering whether I should offer my services, but no one is giving me any idea of what I would be letting myself in for? So obviously I keep schtum. I imagine many others will feel likewise.
Let us know what is required, what needs to be done, and you may well be inundated with volunteers.
-
Well put Fester-- but don't ever ask too many questions!
-
The Extravaganza committee is always on the lookout for fresh faces, new talent and willing volunteers. Having said that it's the timing which presents the biggest issue. In many ways it might make sense for the event to be run by members from the 3TF, but it's a far harder event to run than it appears.
The fairground element looks after itself, more or less, and the road closures, etc. have already been sought and agreed, but the one time all hands are needed is during the week previous and the three days of the event itself.
If you're eager to become involved, shall I pass your details over to the organisers, Fester? They'd be very glad to have you on board, but remember that you'd have to leave your stall on the pier for about seven days in total. It's a big ask...

Having spoken to the acting chairman yesterday I'm assured this year's event will go ahead as originally planned but I'm sure there can never be enough volunteers.

But i was led to believe that the entire event was under threat, or at best drastically downscaled, for the want of a leader? It would seem that the panic is over and management control has been re-established. I look forward to once again patronising and enjoying the event. Z**
-
It's been permanently "under threat" for years, and it needs many more volunteers to keep it going.
-
Maybe they should ask for some then? The whole thing seems shrouded in secrecy - who actually is on the committee? I have no idea who is on it, can anyone name them? Why are the accounts not published on their website etc etc. Transparency is necessary if they wish to attract more support.

-
I am surprised to learn it is not a registered charity.
Their accounts, DaveR, are available to purchase online from Companies House for a small fee.
I am also surprised to note the resignation of the Town Mayor as a Director just before Xmas as well as how often its registered office has changed since its incorporation.
I guess there must be a reasonable explanation for it all.
-
Can't be a registered charity because it has a single purpose to raise funds for the event itself. That is why it is registered as a Company limited by Guarantee.
-
Thank you, Yorkie.
When I used to support the event with a paid business advert, I always thought I was supporting a not-for-profit organisation.
Do you happen know what it was then before it became a Limited Company in 1997.
-
Why is our
steamed esteemed Mayor on there twice, even after he has resigned once? :o ???

Anyhow, is the panic officially over now?
-
When I used to support the event with a paid business advert, I always thought I was supporting a not-for-profit organisation. Do you happen know what it was then before it became a Limited Company in 1997.
It always was a not-for-profit organisation; in that sense, nothing's changed. However, after the founders of the event had had enough in the late 1990s, the Heritage Trust (a registered charity) assumed the mantle, and created the Heritage Company to handle the financial side of the Extravaganza. It remained like that until 1995. What happened after that I don't know.
-
Ian, this is the activity from 1997 until now.
BTW, it is already in the publc domain and is also probably better read from the bottom upwards.

And that is only a list of the Documents lodged at Companies House - what other matters are concealed under the surface? ;)
-
Interesting. I suspect the changes in registered office are down to the particular volunteer changing every so often. It used to be the case that none of the administrative staff was paid, but the reality is that the event always takes a lot of time to organise and unless you can find a willing millionaire with a lot of time on their hands it's probably no longer practical to take that approach.
-
Well im back from a weekend away and glad that at least people are talking about it,as for making money,i wish,no it others that make money, charities over the weekend, cafes, restaurants and all hotels( most allow only 3 night bookings), the committee only put the event on for the town,i would love somebody to tell me what i ever gained from it. Anyway i hope Alan Guinn the acting chairman has got his committee sorted and is trying to pick up the pieces, anyone wanting to offer help and support could speak to Dave Mann on 01492 872688.
-
There is a meeting tomorrow nite at the Trinity center at 7,im not sure were we are up to but if there is anyone who wants to help or just see who helps run the extravaganza.
-
It is a shame nobody from the committee thought of informing the NWWN so it could have been included in today's edition.
-
Cllr Ann Yates is on the case according to the Pioneer! So now there is nothing to fear apart from fear itself!
Once the Council get their grubby hands on the Extravaganza it will go the same way as the Decorative Lighting and the pathetic Xmas Parade! :rage:
-
Yorkie you know the town council started it and even in those early days realised, wow, this is too much like hard work we need to farm this out to some real mugs, and here i;am still getting involved, why, who for,to benefit who.
-
Going along to meeting tonite to see if i can help,i would never had got involved again but when somebody leaves at such short notice i suppose it is all hands on deck.Iam hoping the event does not have to decrease as much as the press are saying. When i see that coach firms and even train companies are all coming into town on the precept that there will be an event ,i would hate for this town to get a bad name so im of to help.

What is the situation with the website, Wrex? It looks as though it hasn't been touched since all the problems last year?

It should be up on thursday and at the moment things seem to be on track.

That's good to hear. Well done to all involved. $good$

Thanks to Oscar for keeping us on our toes, its not easy working and running this event and we don;t want any thanks ,just a little understanding. When people say we are begging thats a little harsh when we all do it for nowt and its the town that benefits not us,all i get out of it is taking a few days out of my working week without pay,not run by CCBC,Llandudno Town Council or any one but volunteers,we all do it because its good for our town it would be no loss to me whatsoever but all YJB AND PRIMARY SCHOOL KIDS WILL ALL BE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE one WEEKEND WHEN THEY CAN ENJOY A BIT OF FUN IN THEIR TOWN.
-
Can you give us a link to this web site wrex? Can't seem to find an up to date one yet .

Well done to last years committee for winning best community event last year. We know it gets slated but lets be honest it works, hence the return of thousands every year. For next year there has to be an influkes of new and young for the event to survive because there are only a handfull capable of running up and down Mostyn St all weekend. All you ever get is the funfair, well until we magic 30,000 pounds it pays for the job but more importantly to me is it gives the youth of this town just one weekend when their town is transformed and they can have a laught. It does need tweaking but with such short notice there is no chance this year. If you want to complain then do it to one of the 76 coffee outlets in town and see what they say. D)

Best community event Ian,sorry about the website,i don;t know why its not up, i was told thursday, then told it was being done yesterday, but no one has been in touch to explain why, once again sorry.
-
Things seem to be back on track, its hard to ask for help when you get slaughtered o Oscar so it seems were left to go it alone, little help from CCBC and unable to plea for support so this tears will go ahead but next years is going to change,in the way it is run and funded.
-
The hospitality Association are supposed to be collecting for us ,when they heard rumours the event was in trouble they offered to collect around the large hotels so lets hope they contact us soon.
-
Judging by some of the comments, wrex, the updated site has a few problems.

Hopefully, they can be rectified quite quickly.

Doesn't seem to be any pics in the photo gallery!

I have just apologised to Oscar for the little misunderstanding,he accused me of slagging him of when that is the last thing i would do,Oscar normally supports the extravaganza and what was meant was we get slaughtered ON Oscar and not by Oscar, sorry.

Yes , thought it was strange , we all know how much you do for the extravaganza , and yes, oscar is also a decent supporter of the event ! All is well again !
all we need now is this lovely weather over that weekend ZXZ
-
On the Friday afternoon there is a Alice day on the prom as it is her birthday ,so the extravaganza will be doing a bit with the event(4 may),as you may know Mr B Mortelock has aquired the Alice collection and has plans to open an Alice museum soon,so this should be good for the town and look forward to seeing his plans.
-
$walesflag$ He seems to have had a lot of interest in the day from all over the country and abroad, with entertainers coming from all over to celebrate her birthday.

One of the biggest Alice fan clubs is in Japan - must be the furthest away also! Domo origato! ZXZ

Im glad to say the website is looking a bit better now, sorry for the delay but we have only just got access to it so we will now be able to add to it with some help from a certain man, many thanks Dave.

Glad to help out, Wrex. It's Llandudno's single most important event and it needs to have a good website.
It is looking a lot better but there are still a few bits and pieces that need fixing. I will try and get it finished off over the next few days

Nice to see the local press giving the extravaganza some positive cover, everybody seems to be pulling together to get our event up and running to full steam.
-
I'll be around to let off steam! Couldn't get away this year so I will probably enjoy the spectacle along with everyone else.
I love the steam organs so can often be found standing google eyed in front of the biggest and brashest one in the show! D)
If you're around I'll buy you a coffee at Nero's.
-
Does that include a muffin Yorkie ?. I hope they realise how busy they are going to be.

Mmmm...bacon muffin at Caffe Nero. One is never enough! ;)

Just bought one in town. Funny that they are thanking us for our contribution--- no one has been near !!
-
Not many have come to thank us for spending all our spare time organising this for the whole town but never mind one day we may be apprciated.Getting people to help is so hard these days.
-
Anybody who wants to make a contribution towards the event or help feel free, thats what we do it for and charge,FREE.The address is LVE, PO BOX 156 OR TELEPHONE 01492 546346
-
All businesses that benefit from the Extravaganza should contribute something towards it, even if its only a few quid. $good$
-
Still waiting to hear from the hospitality assoc, promised to support when rumours it may not be going ahead, but not heard a thing since,no wonder the committee get fed up with constant critisizing .
-
The committee are all working hard to bring the event to town, after a bad easter i hope the event can bring a little cheer to all traders which it was only ever started to for.I personally will end up taking a few days off costing me a fair bit and obviously that is my choice,as you know i came back only because the Chairman resigned and the committee needed a hand with the funfair so just remember if you do benifit from the event being on it would not kill you to say thanks and here is a donation towards the FUTURE ,yes i know people expect us to come to them because we have all the time in the world.
-
Wrex, now might be a good time to drop me some magazines in, I can try to push the event and sell a few... as you originally requested.

Just spent the day in our extravaganza office, sorting out collecting tins, bunting, charity stalls, security, street plans, entertainment oh what a job this is but we think its in a good cause, only 11 days left to organize everything ,i hope we can have a good event.
-
It will be a FANTASTIC event.
I have five family members coming for 4 days especially for this, and they are spread across 2 hotels.
The weather must surely be kind to us, seeing as its been terrible for the last week and the forecast for the next 7 days is dire.
It must be due to change by then. Can't wait, and well done to Wrex and the other organisers. $good$ &well& &well&

I was a bit surprised to see yellow posters advertising Colwyn Bay Prom Day attached to the taxi rank railings by Palladium. I wonder if there are posters in Colwyyn Bay advertising the Extravaganza?

Sorry Dave ive given up on CCBC running promday, anyway so much to do,bunting to put up,funfair to arrange, programmes to sell, buckets to seal, chairs to sort out, lots to do,just lacking the right person to approach the tows buisnesses for support,it Cantakes a special person who can ask for help and we are lacking the personel, but we are nearly there and its all hands on deck. Can somebody order some sun please.

Seen on another thread:
"The Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza will be taking over the streets of Llandudno on May 5th, 6th and 7th May 2012."
EXACTLY!!!!! >>>

But it will be bringing in many visitors and lots of cash to the town, that must be good surely? At least you can go and look at the transport festival on Bodafon Fields, we loved it last year D)
-
But it will be bringing in many visitors and lots of cash to the town, that must be good surely? At least you can go and look at the transport festival on Bodafon Fields, we loved it last year D)
I too love the transport Festival, not just for the exhibits, but because it is well organised, is restricted to a particular area and does not infringe on ones ability to visit the town and its facilities.
The number of businesses who gain from the "Victorian" Extravaganza are not that many, and there are plenty of retailers who would rather not have the Event. Such do not, of course, include cafes, fish and chip shops, pubs, ice-cream sellers, pick pockets and shop lifters, to name just a few!
I will only come into town out of sheer necessity.
That's how I feel. There are plenty who feel different and enjoy the event and I hope they have a great time and spend lots of money in the town. It will not however, make one iota of difference to our rates bill next year and the Extravaganza Committee will be out with the begging bowls yet again, due to lack of support from those who you say gain from the event.
-
Well, here it is again. I've just had a little walk through town and I'm fascinated by some of the machines that are being erected! I think it's about time we dropped the "Victorian" from the title as it clearly isn't anymore.
Love it or loath it I think everyone should agreee that this must be one of the major events in all of Wales and we should be proud of it.
If you are hoping to enjoy it, I hope you enjoy it. If you are hoping to make a few quid out of it I hope you make a few quid out of it. If you are one of the organisers I salute you.
-
Indeed Paddy,
I have family arriving for the Extravaganza, they will enjoy it no matter what the weather. They always do, and I always do.
They will be spending in hotels, restaurants, bars, shops and my Mum cant resist giving to every charity stall and tombola.
Me? I'll be working every day. Its not such a good weekend for me takings wise, but I honestly dont care... its good for the town in general.
Well done to the organisers. $good$
-
Thank you paddy and Fester its nice to get some applause.

Wrex certainly worked hard today, he was all over the place sorting things out. Well done, mate. $good$

Thanks Dave,TWO MORE DAYS OF RUNNING AROUND and thats my bank holiday gone, lets hope when certain buisnesses are banking on tuesday they remember why.

Thanks for that link to the set of photos. I have enjoyed them over breakfast.
I sent the link to my mum who sent this reply,
"Dave has done a wonderful job there what a great free show .Well done Llandudno MX"
She is lucky, she learnt how to use a computer aged 80! 86 now.
We take it for granted a bit but what a great way it is to show the world what a place has to offer with a set of photos like that.
-
Like a lot of people, I always like to moan about the extravanza and how difficult it is to get anywhere, all that hooting going on, and other grumpy old man stuff, but it really is a fantastic event and something to be very proud of.
Seemed a bit quieter to me yesterday, compared to previous years, but then it was a bit nippy despite the sunshine.

Here's a thought which occurred to me today. I was at Colwyn Bay Prom Day and saw that Tudno FM Community Radio were there. But Colwyn Bay isn't their community, Llandudno is. I don't think anyone in Colwyn Bay can even get Tudno FM, unless by Internet. Why weren't they at the Extravaganza?
-
Some photos of the Extravaganza can be found here:

Mr. Alexander was the best act, in my view. In the photo below, he decided to stand on a chair, that was balanced on another chair, that was balanced on a piece of board, that was balanced on another chair, that was stood on a table...whilst juggling knives!!

Without doubt, the highlight of my VE weekend stroll.

Without doubt, the highlight of my VE weekend stroll.
It would be great if we could have a few similar acts dotted around the town for next year's Extravaganza, wouldn't it? He is exactly the sort of act people expect at the Extravaganza.
I noticed he also appears at this similar event in Chester:
http://www.chesterfestivals.co.uk/mbna-chestival/chestival-whats-on/vaudeville-in-the-day-part-of-mbna-chestival-p147321 (http://www.chesterfestivals.co.uk/mbna-chestival/chestival-whats-on/vaudeville-in-the-day-part-of-mbna-chestival-p147321)
If you scroll down the page, you'll see that there is a long list of Corporate sponsors, maybe the focus could be on something similar in Llandudno to reduce the dependence on fairground rides and give the Extravaganza the cash to book a few more acts? I spoke to the Manager of one of the town's largest Bars on Saturday and he said that he had not even been approached to contribute this year.

Nice pics, ME. That Crosville bus is very stylish.

Fascinating watching some of the larger amusements being dismantled tonight and packed up for transporting home on long lorries. Not too many hard hats or high vis vests on display though!!
I had a grandstand view from the belltower of the operation to dismantle and get the dodgem car structure all packed up - really quite an amazing procedure.

We also went to the Transport Festival on Saturday, again very enjoyable, lots of classic cars, trucks, buses etc!

Many thanks and congratulations to Wrex and all his fellow workers for all their hard work. $thanx$
Thanks too, to all the rides surrounding Holy Trinity Church, as they kept their music quiet during the morning service, which was much appreciated.
I went around the Extravaganza on Sunday afternoon and it was wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves. I enjoyed the parade (sorry I didn't spot you, Nemesis) but was sorry to miss Mr. Alexander's performance - that chair balancing act looks amazing. The GOES display was fascinating (lovely to meet you, Debbie) and I met up with friends to watch one of the Alice performances, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We ended the day by watching the transport parade and the organisers of the Transport Festival must also be congratulated for bringing together such a lot of interesting vehicles.
I should like to say a special thank you to the very kind and helpful operators of the Mach 1 ride in Trinity Square, who enabled me to take some aerial photos of Holy Trinity. $thanx$ $thanx$ $thanx$
Wrex, would it be possible to pass on my thanks to the Mach 1 people, please?
&well& everyone!
-
Blodyn, you do have a head for heights! I look forward to seeing your pictures in due course.
How marvellous to see how clean and tidy the town is this morning, there has obviously been a big clean up overnight. Well done to all concerned.
-
Lovely to meet you too Blodyn. Definitely looking forward to seeing the aerial photos.
Just to say what a super extraveganza weekend. The GOES tent was busy for the two days we were there. We gave two guided walks under the pier to look for remains of the old pier as well, and both events went really well. Just as we finished the Sunday walk under the pier we arrived back on the marine drive to see the transport parade - wow! It was great! Have added a picture from the GOES tent.
-
Here's a picture of Holy Trinity from the air (well, from the Mach 1 ride, with thanks to the operators for their help).
-
$cool$ a great view!

Thanks!
I meant to say before I much I liked your photos of flags and flying fish at the Transport Festival. The bright colours against that lovely blue sky look so cheerful.

Hollins and Nemesis, I have to admit that in the end I didn't have to be very daring.
I eyed up the ride for a while after church and thought that it didn't look too fast (that was an illusion as the ends of the arms apparently get up to 60 mph!) but thought that the turning upside down looked a bit too exciting. :o The ride also seemed to go on for a long time - rather too good a value for my liking. However, at the beginning or end of the ride there would have been time, from the right seat, to get a good view of the church, so I was prepared to have a go.
I asked if I'd be able to take my camera on the ride, to take some photos of the church, but was told "Sorry, no", as it wouldn't have been safe to take anything which could fall. :( However, if I went back at the end of the afternoon, when it was quietening down, I could have a couple of minutes at the top and then come down again - so that's how I got the photos. :D
-
Sorry, Blodyn, but I have to disagree.
On Saturday afternoon, I thought ten revolutions for £4 was poor value-for-money but it did not seem to deter all the teenagers from queuing up.
In fact, there was a similar ride in Upper Mostyn Street that did 13 revolutions for £4 with no queue at all when we passed.
BTW, I do love your pics.
.
-
On the other hand I would have paid NOT to go on either one
-
I totally agree but I wouldn’t have minded the takings just for one hour.
8 x £4 = £32
15 x £32 = £480
Can you begin to imagine the takings for the whole weekend at around £500 per hour?
I wonder how much (or little) they pay the Extravaganza Committee for that spot outside Trinity Church and the National Trust?
.
-
You did well there Blodyn. How nice of them to accommodate you. ;D

Bri, you are talking my kind of language there! $good$
-
Yes, but they still had to buy the ride, pay insurance etc.
-
Now I've gone off the idea!
-
Well, Bri, I didn't count the revolutions and I can see that the teenagers might have agreed with you but, personally, I would have considered 10 spins more than adequate and 13 excessive! ;D Thanks for your comment on my photos.
Nemesis, yes, the people were very kind and helpful.
-
Not a problem, Blodyn, but if I am not being rude, I am still curious for an answer to my question especially if these fairground rides can each manage to draw in £10,000 plus over the weekend.
I would hate to think the Extravaganza Committee undersell themselves.
I wonder how much (or little) they pay the Extravaganza Committee for that spot outside Trinity Church and the National Trust?
.
-
Bri,can you imagine the grief i had from the operator when he realised there was a ride the same as his in Upper Mostyn St and he had to lower his price to 4 pound from 5,he was not happy, but like i told him i don;t ask you how much you take home so please no complaining about a bit of competition.
-
Good answer Wrex.
That question ranks alongside the most annoying ones I hear when I am working.
Those being, ''How much do you take in here mate?''
Or ..... ''I bet you do alright, I'll give you £1 for this item that costs £2.99..''
I always wonder what response they would get asking the same question in Asda....... or Cafe Culture! :o
-
What's wrong in enquiring?
If it's dirt cheap I may consider doing something myself next year.
I wonder how much (or little) they pay the Extravaganza Committee for that spot outside Trinity Church and the National Trust?

Glad it isn't only me who gets annoyed with these people.
We get them in the Charity Shop----" I'll give you a pound for that love" for a Wedgewood dish priced at £4 and I have actually seen people trying to pull buttons off blouses so as to ask for a reduction, let alone pocketing goods.
Where do these people think money comes from if we don't raise it? I have made one or two people think twice, by just quietly saying " I'm sorry, but I am only a volunteer, shall I get the manageress?" They usually slink away muttering.

I would just like to thank DaveR for his help with the website,it was much appreciated.
-
I think for what Dave Roberts does to help promote the town with this website he should be given the honour of carrying the Olympic Torch partly through Llandudno and probably past Caffe Nero.
The problem is DaveR would refuse because he will much prefer to take photos of the event.
.
-
Bri do you really think DaveR could run past Fat Cat,Cafe Nero without calling in, and that would be a fire risk
-
On this years event i think it went quite well cosidering the time we had to put it on,all members pulled together and praise has to co to Barney and Gaynor Baker for the hard work they put in,Alan Guinn,Daive Mann and all members. As for next year we can now sort out things that looked wrong on Mostyn st ,the programme, entertainment, the steam, marketing,CCBC involvement and most important is trying to invole younger volunteers to keep the event going.
-
Hello
Can I ask why the fair, is becoming less Victorian?
I also have noted that the Steam Engines are all now parked up in one spot, on the edge of town, I heard lots of the Viewing public asking why this was, whilst attending to the engine. In previous years there has been engines spread throughout the town, this would help it feel more victorian, as well as some of the old time rides and stalls, the hand opperated street organs, maybe even a Organ powered by a Steam Engine? There used to be one on the Prom, but in the town it would sound awesome.
Other Question I have is why more exhibits are not parked up on the Prom, what a wonderful place to view exhibits.. vith a victorian back drop for pictures.
Don't get me wrong I love the Extravaganza, just I have been wondering the above for a while now.
Best Regards
Edwin
-
We have tried to make the town hall the Steam hub,but we could try and move a few more around,i think money has been an issue so there have been less organs but this year i hope to se a few more coming into town.

Hi SDQ, I think the Past Times shop has closed down, sure it was only there for a run up to Christmas the year before last.
-
Don;t all rush at once,i only wanted a few ideas. :'(
-
It's a tricky one. The businesses that benefit the most are cafes, but are any of them big enough to fork out whatever it costs to be main sponsor? Perhaps if you had various levels of sponsorship and named the figure they needed to pay, businesses might step forward a bit more?

Below is a COPY and PASTE from Gwynedd Councils
EVENT PLANNING HELP NOTES
Prepared by Gwynedd Council Events Unit
I hope this is of help of some kind
GRANTS - (Start looking for grants as soon as possible at least 9 months before your event)
Start looking for grants as soon as possible and make sure you note their deadlines and how long it will take for your application for support to be assessed.
Search thoroughly for suitable funding avenues – The event needs to find schemes with criteria matching the type of festival or event. Also remember to prepare a business plan that includes a marketing plan.
There are many bodies and charities which award grants to a wide variety of people and groups. Grant awarding bodies and trusts have to be sure that the money they may award to your event is going to be put to good use.
They will have to be sure that yours is a sound organisation with a good structure and a real understanding of what it is doing. You should have an established committee and a bank account before applying for grants. It is useful too to have a ‘business plan’ that gives the information grant awarding bodies need in a professional format, though most bodies will still ask you to fill in one of their own forms. You can also find information and templates for business plans on fs4b.wales web site.
TIP
Don’t depend on getting grants.Try to make your event self-funding, particularly if you’re thinking of running the event in future years. Simply by searching under ‘Grants’ on the Internet you may be able to find grants that could be available to your event.Any awarding body will ask to acknowledge the source of the grant on any publicity material or literature you produce.
Below are details of some organisations who either distribute information on funding or who administer grants for which you may be able to apply:-
Arts Council for Wales - Awards for All A lottery grant scheme for local communities.
Directory of Social Change (DSC)
is a good place to start looking for trusts to which you may be able to apply. The DSC produces useful Publications, such as:-
The Directory of Grant Making Trusts
A Guide to Major Trusts.Vols. 1,2 & 3.Visit their website to order these.
GRANTfinder
The UK's leading searchable database on EU and UK Government grants and loans, charitable trusts and corporate sponsors.

The main benefactors are pubs, restaurants, cafes, and anything that tourists need to keep them going. Hotels would be a good bet, as they would likely do very well. It totally depends how much you're after for a main sponser. A lot of businesses would like the exposure main sponser gives them, but may not have the funds available. One thing may be to split it up. Main sponser for one day would split the cost into thirds? You could try Asda or any big major retailers in the retail parks, but my guess is they hardly see the benefit, being quite far out.
-
Thanks for your input Andrew.
-
I wouldn't bother approaching the Pier management, they hate the extravaganza with a passion, (wrongly in my view)
But, during the Extravaganza last year, I couldn't move in Wetherspoons, Fountains Bar, or The Carlton.
Every one of them was packed out so much that I could not get served.
Also, maybe the likes of Caffe Nero have a marketing budget they could dip into? Its a major chain after all.
-
Thanks Fester, all on my list now.
-
Very sad news at the death of David Price our town crier,he was a brilliant worker for our event and will be sadly missed by all.
-
Omg its that time of year when i forget about xmas lights and start to think extravaganza,i do still think why i spend so much of my time doing it,its not for the applause i assure you,i know deep down i do love to see the town busy and it does give our children one weekend when they can really look forward to going to town,i think its not until the Monday teatime comes along that you can sit back and say,yes that was worth it,because of the weather and isks that the weekend is not so enjoyable for a handful of us,this weekend i have to attend a traffic management course, nobody is forceing me but i would love togo xmas shopping with the rest of you, anyway here is t 2013 and lets hope all goes well.
-
Cheers Wrex! ...and more power to you, (and the Extravaganza) ZXZ
-
Yes, well done, Wrex, I've seen how hard you work that Weekend. $good$
-
Well we head into 2013 with the good news that the prom day has at last been moved out of competition with our event ,for this year at least. It will help the operators of the funfair on the Monday to take more money, like it or not its their rent that keeps the event ticking and will help us to continue,we are trying to improve but its hard with the manpower we have to cover all aspects fully, but we keep trying.
-
Somebody asked me if i was being paid for doing the Extravaganza, they had heard some where, the answer is not a bean, nobody gets paid anymore, the chairman that resigned last January was but noone is anymore im glad to say. $thanx$
-
i've just spent an hour or so searching around all the websites covering the extravaganza, and in particular the Extravaganza street parade. However I haven't come up with the information I was after. So, here goes, I know that several TTF members will know the answer.
The parade, the one that takes off around midday on Sunday and Monday and usually goes along Madoc Street. Someone dressed in more or less victorian costume, do they need permission and/or approval before joining in, or do they just turn up and enter as and when appropriate?
Obviously the mega big entrants, steam engines, morris dancers etc must have to make contact beforehand with someone. But I was thinking more of an individual, a stilt walker or similar? Also, hhrrrmmm, who much, or how little, or even none at all. The dreaded "advertisement" Can any member point me in the right direction. Mike
-
I believe anyone who turns up in a Victorian outfit at the start of the Parade can join in, free of charge.
-
Correct Dave,
My wife and daughter were togged up in Victorian dresses a couple of years ago, and were encouraged to join in the parade.
The more the merrier it seems.
-
Obviously the mega big entrants, steam engines, morris dancers etc must have to make contact beforehand with someone.
I wonder if most folk know that many of them are paid? The big engines have to have their coal bought for them, the stilt walkers, etc. tend to be given actual cash payments. The vintage vehicles who are part of the Transport Festival tend to simply turn up and join in - 'cos they enjoy it :-) But the parade was always one of the costlier elements of the weekend.
-
Thank you for your interest Ormegolf and yes all are welcome in the parade it helps our cause and the parade, all you need to do is turn up and wait for Mr Kevin Chin to tell you when and where to join the parade.Ian you are bang on about the payments, all entertainers need paying along with the marching bands, the traction engines, police, ambulance, street cleaning etc,etc ,any body can sponsor an engine for £300 which includes your name on the engine for the weekend and to ride in the parade on your engine.Help is the name of the game, financial, physical and mental(me) so don;t hesitate to get involved.
-
I have walked in the parade every year in Victorian Dress--just turn up and join in. Most people are chatty and you meet the same folks year in and year out.
-
What is the insurance arrangements for the parade? Presuming that cover has to be taken out for all those taking part, surely the organisers would have to declare the names of all participants. Of course I stand to be corrected. WWW
-
Public Liability Insurance, I imagine. It's not like you need the name & address of everyone who enters a shop, for example, is it?
-
Wrex, please don't thank me for my interest---its the other way around, I should be thanking you. As always I've got self interest in my query.
However, rather than just turning up as a complete surprise, I think my honest side forces me to write about my vague plan.
Ive got a small one wheel tailer which attaches on to the back of a push bike, vintage, 3 wheeler, whatever. On this trailer is a proper fixed steel attachment which holds a fairly small advertising banner. My idea:--Me, dressed up in a fancy dress as a victorian golfer (there are such things) on the bike and a photo of my golf course with just the title of the place---nothing else, no phone numbers, nothing.
The size of the banner is roughly 2foot six by about 6 feet high. Mike
-
I just thought I had better add this bit on. I wouldn't even THINK of attempting anything like this if I had any business opposition, because of possible complaints. But I hav'ent any. The big clubs would fall over laughing at the idea. I am on friendly terms with both the local crazy golf operators and I am sure they would not be bothered. And local putting greens are a different thing altogether. Mike
-
Your entrepreneurial genius knows no bounds, Sir! :golf:
-
Fester, that's a bloody good word, ----- that enterpris oh entrapre oh you know what I mean, if only I could spell it Mike
-
We have had a good responce from our sponsorship letters sent out to every hotel and guest houses and its nice to recieve some letters thanking us for what we do,some people still think the council run it and they can;t believe we get nothing out of doing it besides getting the satisfaction of seeing the town busy, thank you for your support.
-
If you saw how Britain was built which was a brilliant advert for Llandudno you will have seen the slip being repaired then built on the prom, well im glad to say it will reappear on Mostyn st in may,we also have a couple of new bands appearing this year in the parade, still waiting to find out what the Alice group are doing this year but we will work together if required. The parade will leave outside the Albert at 1pm each day and will go back to Deganwy ave route.
-
Hopefully we will have an Irish band marching this year. $good$
-
Im glad to say that there will be two specials in Llandudno on the Saturday of the extravaganza, one a steam train from Tydsley and one a diesel from Cambridge which is already sold out,so it is nice to know we are doing something right ,i just hope the town gets behind us.
-
Good work, Wrex $good$

Thanks Dave,we are busy sorting the funfair, entertainment, organising the steam, road closures, collecters license, street licence, the programme, advertising, planning so we can put the banners up,so as you see Dave there is loads to do and somepeople wonder why we ask for donations and help, baffles me ,but my main satisfaction comes when you see the local kids enjoying their town for one weekend of the year.
-
Website up and running now. www.victorian-extravaganza.com (http://www.victorian-extravaganza.com).
-
Wrex: there's some place holder text still in place Under 'testimonials' , and some ropey justification in the top LH side text under Come One Come All.
-
The countdown is partially obliterated .
-
There should be two new bands on display this year, the royal lancashire fusiliers on the Saturday and the liverpool pipe and drum band on the Sunday and Monday.

Not on my calendar it ain't! ZXZ

I am trying to organise a steam gathering on the friday night outside the lilly on the West shore,i thought this would kick of the event and be a good photo oppertunity, hope it comes off.

Yorkie has promised to come along and generate some hot air.
Seriously, good idea, Wrex, hope it does come off. $good$
-
Please let us know the time later Wrex. Tks
-
If it comes about Nemisis it will be between 6 30 and 8,if its a nice evening it could be a good start to the weekend.
-
Sounds a great idea to me.
-
Yorkie has promised to come along and generate some hot air.
I would not even attempt to exceed your own powers in this respect and will be pleased to leave you in charge of the firing, stoking and total steam generation - I would however suggest that you have your boiler certified prior to lighting the fire! After, of course, checking that you are allowed to play with matches! ZXZ

-
Sorry i made a mistake the lancashire fisiliers will be in the parade and playing in the Arena on the Sunday and not the saturday, there are at least 60 in the band and will look impressive leading the parade, remember this year it will be leaving from the Albert hotel at 1pm ZXZ
-
Just been checking availability for the weekend of the event, been on lots of sites and lots of hotels are full already with 8 weeks to go,really glad the hoteliers get this weekend to kick start their season.
-
Book your weekend away because its coming.
-
Programmes are out and available in the tourist office for £1 ,we have had to bring the price down due to the times which is not a good reflection on the event,i personally think there is not enought people who want the event to carry on,it does bring people in but we cannot change anything without the help of the people who benefit,i really think its hard to explain to the tourist trade that we are doing it for them and the town and not ourselves, the responsibility is enourmous and the support is dyeing, until we call it a day, people will not give us a hand.
-
Well Wrex, I don't benefit from it financially, but I love it nonetheless.
As usual, I have several members of the Fester clan booked in for the Extravaganza weekend, they all spend like sailors on shore leave, (especially my Mum) ... and the hotels, charities and stalls will all benefit immensely.
-
Thanks Fester,do you think the Hospitality assoc should run the event as they may beable to get some support.
-
Oh poo,Oscar has a little piece on Cartrefi donating towards the Extravaganza ,all i can say is thank god they did because not many tourist buissnesses have, not lloking good for next year, maybe Maggie is right.
-
Somebody is spouting off on Oscar, true words but you just know we are going to get blasted as a bunch of moaning individuals,i just wish those who do make would thank and help.
-
Some good comments on Oscar and of course a few negative but i think this comment sums it all up ;m.rydo

Some good comments on Oscar, but as usual, a few negatives. This post sums up the extravaganza:
"Re: the "Great Unwashed", they were Victorians as well, you know? They were people who lived during the reign of Queen Victoria. Ergo, they have as much of a right to be represented in any attempt to portray the history of that time, alongside the usual lot with bonnetts, top-hats, pocket watches and waistcoats. Sartoriolly admirable as the upper classes may have been at the time, they weren't the be-all and end-all!
Regarding everything with the 'Ganza itself, the poor organisers (much like many groups organising things in the N. Wales area) are in the wonderful position of "Damned if you do, Damned if you don't". The big, more modern rides, such as the waltzers, whirlers, ghost trains, madly spinning gyroscopes and others are of course popular with young people and bring in footfall. The hook-a-duck stalls, hooplah, coconut shies follow in their wake. Now many think of these as being nothing more than glorified, gypsy-run (Apologies for being a tad unPC!!) dross, with flashing bulbs and pop music designed to wow people. I don't buy into that, they fill a much-needed gap, and are perefectly acceptable in a fairground setting.
The rides like helter skelters and carousels, which are seen to embody the Victorian asthetic, add in the aura of the times, not to mention the pipe organs, steamrollers and Victorian parades, with people in all the get-up aforementioned get up. But the simple fact of the matter is you're not going to attract thousands of people to have a look at a nice organ (har har!)or some people in 19th century dress, however nice and well-intentioned the volunteers may be. You will of course get enthusiasts and that's fine, but to bring in the massive amounts of tourists, you need a modern day fairground, as such, the Extravaganza has to be both.
The bugbear, as has been mentioned, is how much people ought to contribute to it, and the varying degress to which they do. Shops can counter that far from being an encouragement to footfall, the Extravaganza actually blocks up either side of Mostyn Street, confining people to the road where the rides are located, and actually hamper their efforts. I worked in town once during the Extravaganza, and we saw a drop in custom due to the sheer "blockage" caused by the crowd. Moreover, it took me half an hour to nip down the road for a sandwich!
A great comparison to the extravaganza is the pier - Victorian setting and ethos but with modern rides, arcades and shops; plenty of people visiting; plenty of shops paying rates. And big attraction to the town as well.
So - in summation; Victorian or not? Arguments to be made either way. And is it an ill-funded major tourist event which brings thousands to the town and thereby ought to receive cash from traders? Or is it a massive, annual multi-way b****r up for traffic, which stops shoppers from coming in to the town, and doesn't encourage visitors to spend their own money in the shops, thereby rendering it unworthy of contribution from businesses? "

THAT is a marvellous post. Well thought out, well written. As to the question at the end. Equally well thought out and written. I DON'T KNOW
-
&well&
-
Well its nearly upon us again,we had a meeting to just go over the final arrangements last nite, all seems in order, steam traction engines ordered, organs ordered, bands ordered, entertainment ordered, programmes out, volunteers still sort, so all we need now is some sunshine.
-
Brought a copy of the official programme yesterday, very well designed and top quality $good$
-
Just been trying to get a room for 3 nights this weekend,it would appear that Beaumaris seems the closest, the Grand has a few costing £300 pound a night,ha.I do hope a few hotels express their gratituded for the effort it taken us to fill their rooms.
-
Good luck to you Wrex and all the others who put so much time and hard work into the event, The weather forecast is good for the weekend so I hope that everything goes well and that it is another successful Extravaganza for everyone, $good$
-
Yes good luck indeed and isn't it great to have a good news story for a change! $good$
-
Thank you both.
-
the wife and i were travelling back today along the 55 and she was pointing out all the different show pieces making there way to Llandudno for the big show, you never think about the distances these attractions have to travel, but thanks to you and your colleges it all does for a great weekend. you deserve the good weather i hope it,s a great success for you all.
-
I'm just having breakfast in Caffe Nero and its fascinating to see all the various rides being set up.
Wrex and all the other volunteers do a fantastic job in organising it all. $good$
-
Just tried to board two Arriva trains in the last half hour , both full. On enquiring why they are using only two carriage trains when the extravaganza is on , the answer was "What extravaganza"?

Could swear I've just seen Ormegolf in Victorian golfing attire pushing a bicycle in the parade. Very smart he looked to in his plus fours 8)

Pity I missed him-- bet you didn't spot Nemesis dressed as a pearly queen ! :o

I did and Mike was not far behind you pushing his bike.

Thanks Bri.
I am always amazed how people, myself included can cobble together costumes from bits and pieces, begged, borrowed or bought ! Some of the bits I have are donkey's years old ;D
I believe some of the 'posh' ladies actually have the underpinnings to go with their costumes. Think I should fall over if someone laced me into a corset :o
The crowds today were great-- we had lots of waves, claps and cheers. Makes it all worthwhile.
As for photos, there seemed to be hundreds of people popping up with cameras.

Here's Mike:

Thanks both. Love Mike's big grin in Bri's photo!

Super photos there Dave !! $good$
-
Have been asked by a lady from West Shore to post how wonderful she thought the Extravaganza had been, how well organised and busy it was. The best ever.
Many people who patronised the Charity Shop where I was helping yesterday came in and said how they had enjoyed themselves-- some were booking up ready for next year. One lady from Barnsley didn't even know the event was on until she walked out and into everything. ( Some bad publicity people in that hotel) She was thrilled to bits and said she felt part of the whole thing , even though she was only watching.
So------ well done and thankyou to everyone concerned.
And yes I was there again on Sunday Jack, but I worked dressed up on Monday afternoon !
-
We where so lucky with the weather last weekend, proves somebody up there loves us.We will soon be putting out leaflets asking for donations towards next years event while its still in their minds how much they made last weekend,i hope for bthe sake of the event ,the hoteliers, cafe owners, restaurant owners, pub landlords and shops respond because although i do it for the town, local kids etc it will be disshearting if the response is poor, wish us good luck.
-
Wrex, may I suggest that you set up an "online" donation facility. This can be linked from your Web Site and people can donate 24/7, 365 days of the year. It is used by many Charities and by individuals seeking sponsorship. ££$
-
What sponsorship opportunities are available for next year? Why not listed the various options /costs on here and it may encourage more local businesses to participate?
-
Dave R fantastic photo,s would it be possible to use them on the Extravaganza facebook page as they do the event such justice $walesflag$ $thanx$

Thanks DaveR ,i shall wake the event co-ordinator up now to answer your question.

Local newspaper prints lovely picture of all traction engines in paper under title transport festival steam parade Grrrrrrrrh makes me mad the transport festival has nothing to do with the extravaganza, it is a completely separate event that charges to enter.
The steam attractions cost the extravaganza in the region of £20 thousand pound and we rely on local sponsorship and donations from visitor enjoying the event but when the paper keeps getting it wrong it makes our job hard as we cannot convince people we are not council run (they give us £3000 then charge us that for street cleaning and we don't provide food!!)
So to clear up any misunderstandings the event is run by unpaid volunteers, who give their time freely to put on this event which is funded by fairground rent, program sponsorship/ sales and public donations it has NOTHING TO DO WITH THE TRANSPORT FESTIVAL AND IT IS NOT COUNCIL FUNDED/RUN
it is done by a FEW for the MANY to ENJOY
-
Mrs F...
Never in the field of human entertainment, has so MUCH been done for so MANY, by so FEW..... for so LITTLE!
-
Very good Fester, I've heard that before somewhere?
-
Ever thought of being a poet Mr Fester, anyway when is the Lily grill and bar opening.
-
Be a week or two yet. The whole place is undergoing a deep clean, apparently.
Looks like it'll be a battle between the Lilly Bar & Grill and Dr. Jones' Bar & Grill as to which one opens first. ;D

Whilst wandering along the Prom during the Extravaganza, I was struck by how many people were enjoying the Fairground Organ that was playing by the Cenotaph.
I thought to myself....why can't the Town Council pay to hire the Organ to play on the Prom during the peak weekends in the Summer? I'm sure it would be very popular with visitors and bring a little more life to the Prom.
Here it is in action:

Well i heard this evening that a certain chip shop in the middle of town did 3,000 fish over the weekend, remind me again why i do this.

Wrex we both know why we do it!!!its not for the chips :P :P :P :P $walesflag$

I thought the names of supporters were also printed in the Programme.
-
lots are Ian,but for excample, the lads from the town house gave us two cheques one for each pub over the weekend,if all the others did this we would be laughing
-
Yes, of course; spontaneous donations are always a problem to include.
-
I've got a nasty feeling that I could make a good guess at some of the businesses that took a lot of money and never even bothered a thankyou
-
Do you mean the one who sold 3,ooo fish over the weekend Ormegolf, yet told me he does;nt make any extra over the weekend, some people just like to whind others up,you just have to ignore him.
-
I won't buy anything from that chippy on a point of principle. &shake&
-
If the extravaganza has a collection box, don't ask that business to chip in. It might be cold and greasy
-
I have just read a few bad comments on Oscar left by somebody knocking Gaynor Baker the event co-ordinator,its a very sad situation when a person hides their identity saying such things,if Gaynor has upset one person im sure she would love to apologies, one thing i will say is the event is only running because of Gaynor and Barney giving their all, there are plenty of us who do our bit but those two go well beyond to put a brilliant show on as just proved,so it appears somebody may be rather jealous of their success.
-
Gareth thanks for defending me your are a great friend and like myself and Barney very passionate about the Extravaganza As you know it has been a while since my last walk out!! so it seems strange that the person has waited till now to voice their views about me so publicly :-[ the committee votes on a lot of issues and their are quite a few strong willed people in the room so as for my way or no way comment that's Strange we all have opinions and with the chairman and vice chair they keep us all in check lol I AM VERY UPSET that someone has called me AYOTOLAH publicly and anonymously that is not fair, I thought everyone in the room was a friend please at least tell me to my face your problems and lets see if we can resolve the situation
-
We are still looking for new younger blood to join,as we have seen with Broadway ,nothing is safe so we need to look to the future if this event is to remain. Not sure if we have got it right yet or people have given up moaning about .
-
Right its that time again when i start meeting funfair operators to disscuss positions etc,but do any of you have any suggestions besides scrap ing it,moving on the prom blah, blah,i like to keep things a little different every year just so its not the same but it can be difficult so if you have any ideas, quality that is let me know.
-
Would be grateful if the rear entrance at Holy Trinity Church could be left unobstructed by any of the rides ..... please.
-
Sorry Bellringer, that was the plan but as it was the last ride to go up i was tucked up in bed when they decided they would build the ride in the wrong position, yes maybe i should have been there all night but i give enought time as it is without me losing my beauty sleep lol.I can tell you there will be no mistakes this year.

The last two posts made for pleasant reading, I might add for a change.
The first, a reasonable request made in a friendly non aggressive manner.
The second a polite response and a reasonable explanation of what happened in the past and what was planned for the future.
Oh if only all topics were conducted in this manner Mike

Sorry Bellringer, that was the plan but as it was the last ride to go up i was tucked up in bed when they decided they would build the ride in the wrong position, yes maybe i should have been there all night but i give enought time as it is without me losing my beauty sleep lol.I can tell you there will be no mistakes this year.
Thanks Wrex.
As you know access is required not only for church people doing things on the premises but also for bodies such as the St John's Ambulance.

We go lymm dickensian which is in december each year. Schools all get involved and dress up in victorian clobber, santa comes throwing sweets, always well attended and something rather nice getting a hot choc with truffle :)
The local scouts make xmas wreaths, a few local craft traders etc
Obviously llandudnos is in may which hopefully is warmer. Lymm do a festival around june and one of the things is the scarecrows. You register (for small fee) & put it on display then people buy a map for a quid and it shows you the locations of them all which is good fun.
Anything goes really so you might see sponge bob up a tree.
I also agree with the previous comment of the victorian organ or puppet show for the kids on the prom or in one of the parks.
Pwllheli do a raft race, ive seen upturned reliant robins racing before now and thats well attended
-
Wrex, serious suggestion... the Victorian Wrestling Booth about 3 years ago was fantastic and well attended.
It was certainly in keeping with the Victorian tradition, is it still doing the rounds? Could it be brought back?
-
It could but we had to pay for them to bring it,now of course sponsorship could be sort but its a case of finding somebody with plenty of spare time and who is good at approaching local buisnesses, that is the problem.
-
Something a lot of people don't realise is just how much of the Extravaganza has to be paid for by the organising committee. Might be worth putting last year's accounts in here, Wrex.
-
Will do as soon as their sorted.
-
I think what might help is a list of attractions & potential attractions on the website, together with a specific sponsorship amount next to it.
So, something like:
Fester's Wrestling Booth - Sponsorship Cost £500
Then, both organisations and maybe individuals could see exactly what was needed, making it easier for all concerned.
As a matter of interest, Wrex, do you have a rough amount needed to bring the wrestling booth back?

What about us old Codgers, who have years of experience of dealing with all sorts of matters? Consigned to the Scrap Heap? Think again Wrex, maybe you have your priorities wrong, or are just a little mis-guided. There is no substitute for experience, and plenty of older people still have the enthusiasm and fire in their bellies to take on a difficult task and see it through!

t can;t last much longer without younger members with fresh ideas and plenty of get up and go
They've been saying much the same thing for the past 24 years, Wrex :-)) One problem is the Extravaganza doesn't appeal to younger folk. Another is that younger folk have less time to spare.
But here's an idea: instead of making a blanket appeal for "younger members with fresh ideas" why doesn't the committee draw up a precise list of jobs that need doing? Then you simply ask for people to do those jobs and - as long as you have a decently designed job description - you might get lucky and find some younger folk to do them.
But the 'fresh ideas' thing is a bit of a loss-leader, since just about every idea has been tried in one form or another. There are people you need - I agree - but they are those with specific skill-sets, such as writing (for the programme composition), sales (for the advertising revenue), finance (for the accounting aspects), liaison and communication (for the Police, Council, Fairground, Parade), Management (possibly the most crucial, since a lot of unpaid people with an eclectic mix of attitudes and abilities need managing to get the best out of them), performance (for the on-street performers), Health and Safety..I could go on, but I'm sure you get the gist.
There's also a depressing pattern to committee meetings which I'm sure you've noticed. At the outset, a lot of folk turn up, brimming with enthusiasm and ideas. As the reality bites, with the multiple issues that seem to conspire to prevent implementation of ideas, there's a significant drop-off in attendance and by the time of the eventual event, it's surprising how it all seems to come down to the same small group. It's not unique to the Extravaganza, of course; that same pattern exists within just about every voluntary society. But it's still a problem.

Yorkie i will put your name on the list,i never new you cared .
Wrex, I am sure that by now you know that I am not a supporter of the Extravaganza in its present form. I would like to see a move back about 20 years to the original concept of the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza. Other personal interests and commitments also prevent me from being a regular member of any committee. Therefore, whilst I appreciate your putting my name forward, I will be unable to offer other than my usual support.

In reply to Yorkie's response and everybody else's it is not necessarily young people we are after but new and physically able committee members who are capable of hard physical work over the whole weekend I start at 06:30 am and do not normally finish until 9pm and also those dark winter night when Wrex goes out to measure the roads and positions for the rides, if Yorkie feels he has the time and enthusiasm he is more than welcome, and as he is not a supporter that makes it even better as his experience and feeling of the whole event could be put to better use.
and taking the event back to its roots would require removing the single biggest financial income the event has ie the fair ground rides they pay for the majority of the event some 75-85%
as with all the comments on the forum ie why not have this or do that.......at the end of the day this event is always run by the core members who are volunteers and every year there are more legalities to deal with, health and safety, police, ambulance , insurance, council permissions, car parks to man, programme sellers, who can go where, emergency route, evacuation procedures for fire, Flood, bomb alerts, missing children certificates and procedure, as you can see the list is endless
so be kind to dear old Wrex, come along and help us
-
as with all the comments on the forum ie why not have this or do that.......at the end of the day this event is always run by the core members who are volunteers and every year there are more legalities to deal with
Indeed there are. Which is why it might make sense to try defining the specific jobs you need doing. People are often taken aback when they're expected or asked to do all sorts of things, but if they see a clearly defined job description at the outset it can make a lot of difference.

Help with keeping the stages running smoothly.Stewards for the parade.Programme sellers.Collectors for Mostyn st and the promenade.Barrier stewards.Ian these are a few things we could always do with extra bodies with, just to name a few,i will get my full list together, thanks.

Judith is very good with the extravaganza,we could do a person who encourages local people and groups to dress up,Nemesis always turns up but the more the merrier. We could do with a person going round all buisnesses asking for donations, their views,it is the one job that is hard to fill, anyway i shall get a list made up at the next meeting and put it too Judith to see what she thinks, cheers Ian.
-
We could do with a person going round all buisnesses asking for donations,
To be perfectly honest, wrex, different people used to call annually into my office in C-y-D and I always supported the event with an advert even when it was highly unlikely my business would ever benefit financially from the Extravaganza, as you well know.
Then one day, I bought a programme during the Extravaganza weekend and noticed just how many large businesses in town did not have an advert in it at all when they each must have increased their takings that weekend by several thousands pounds.
Needless to say that was the last time I contributed.
This is just some feedback from a past financial supporter.
Perhaps, you need to approach the large retailers now rather than the towards end of April.
Good luck. ££$
-
It's always been extraordinarily difficult getting the big businesses to contribute. That's a crucial job, and requires someone of tenacity, an outgoing personality, intelligence and charm who's also prepared to work every day for about three months, visiting the premises and confronting the senior manager in person.
Generally, it's work better done by a woman, since most managers are male and women are simply better at getting men to do their bidding, as it were. In the beginning the method was to 'phone every business in town to make an appointment, as they'll ignore letters. Then the person in question had to actually go to the business to meet the boss. It has to be the boss, because they're usually the only ones who can make the decision. They're also the person least likely to be available when you arrive for the appointment.
As you rightly point out, Bri, your business was never going to benefit directly from the Extravaganza, and many businesses will use that argument to deny contributions. The task of the fundraiser is to convince the Manager that any contribution not only helps the event in the short term, but publicises the business, makes a long term contribution to Llandudno as a community and - by helping attract more and more visitors to the town - can only work well for any business in the end.
-
Thanks Ian,now all we need is that person.
-
I can think of two in here who would be perfect...
-
The other thing to bear in mind when soliciting funds is to prioritise the businesses, going first to those who will get a positive benefit and working down to those who will benefit least. This way you should be able to get the maximum result without wasting time.
One small point, some businesses who may not benefit directly, are sometimes very generous with donations! Here I would specifically include Building Companies, Utilities and other large Companies outside of the retail sector.

Not sure where we go after this years event,i think a few of the hard workers are leaving so it will be very hard to continue.I don;t think there was any response from last weeks appeal in the press which does tell us that there is little interest in it.We all know the good and bad of the event and maybe it has run its course,i for one will not be glad to see it dissappear but you can only do so much,we do get support from local buissnesses but we need that one person who could approach them all and explain why we need 100% on this event. As long as i can remember no buissness has ever come along to us after the event and said thank you for putting the event on,we have had a fantastic weekend the hotel has been packed or you could;nt get a seat or the till has;nt stopped ringing here is a Donation towards next year,it never happens,we always are expected to go cap in hand and beg, unless we say we are in a mess and next years event is in danger,WELL i think it is and maybe time has caught up with Llandudno.

These days, (generally speaking) those people who have the drive and motivation to help manage and assist at events are all working longer hours or busy trying to eke out a living.

I am not whinging, Wrex. But I suppose you have the statistics to prove your rather sweeping statement as to your supporters. I think you may find a bit of proper Market Research will show that there are probably as many for the Extravaganza as are against it. Personally I would appreciate a rest from it, or a return to the original format where the people of the town provided the entertainment rather than outsiders.

If you where given the honour of announcing the end of the Extravaganza tomorrow Yorkie i think your market research would be up in arms.
-
It's a tough one. The 'end' of the Extravaganza has been reported several times, I seem to remember, and yet each time - Phoenix-like - it's risen from its own ashes to resume, apparently uninterrupted.
Part of the reason that's happened is the very small number of utterly committed individuals (like our very own wrex:-) at the core of the organisation who believe strongly in the event and part of it is down to Len Ricketts' Transport Festival, which complements the event making it now an almost week-long attraction. Actually, for that reason alone I doubt the event is going anywhere for the near future, but it might well feature fewer Victoriana items and more fairground.
The fairground pays for most of the expenses but - and it's a big 'but' - they don't pay in advance. Expenses, however, have to be met in advance, and that's why funding is always an issue.
I suspect that most people in the town now see the event as little more than the weekend when the town becomes a fairground. But the first few events were nothing like that. They divided the weekend into clearly defined segments: street entertainment was the major aspect. From the Wotan stilt walkers, to David Alexander's fantastic jugging and magic act, the astonishing Ladies' Barbershop choir and a lot more, the event ensured at least one act on every street corner.
The second section was parades, when all the acts plus as many Brass and Military bands as possible paraded once a day through the town.
Then there was indoor entertainment, which took place in the old market hall. On the second year they managed to get a chap with the most staggeringly spectacular Meccano models to set up, as well as Palmists, fortune tellers and all the rest of the usual Victoriana trappings. In the evenings, concerts and shows would be held at various venues around town. The fire station and lifeboat men threw open their doors and showed people their equipment... Finally, prizes were awarded for the 'Best Victorian Outfits' worn during the event, something which brought folk in from all over the UK.
Lastly, there were Steam engines and Organs. Between those four areas, they ensured that the town was buzzing with something almost all the time.
The organisation required for that lot was incredible and - at one point - there was a paid secretary doing the work; volunteers were no longer sufficient.
There's no doubt some places do extremely well out of the event. But getting them to give money to the committee for next year's event is akin to Thaumaturgy. No easy task, and I don't envy wrex's job. But I'd say fund raiser is probably the most important position needed, now, and if no one is prepared to do that job, and do it well, then I could suggest that the committee simply announces it's disbanding, and waits to see what happens. That might result in a new band of volunteers - or nothing. Either way, the town will get what it deserves.

But you don't live in Llandudno, so I don't really see how it can affect you? I live in town and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. It's a tourist town, so anything that pulls tourists in is to be applauded, because many residents' livelihoods depend on the tourist pound.

That's an excellent point, but one, sadly, that many don't grasp. The quality of life for Llandudno's residents depends on it remaining one of the top tourist destinations for the UK.

Bully for you Sir! Of course we DID live in Town, and we DID have an Hotel at one time, but downsized to PB. Consequently we are fully cognisant with both sides of the argument. However, we have to visit the town to do all, or most, of our shopping, so still have to suffer the tremendous parking and congestion problems.
I am not against the Extravaganza per se, but would prefer it not to be in my back yard, to quote a popular euphemism.
Perhaps if a more positive attitude were expressed by a certain individual, instead of the constant moaning and groaning, it would help to create added enthusiasm in others.
I will be around for this year's event, ear plugs to the fore! :D

The clue is in the name of the site you were on Wrex, "Laterooms". It's used by Hoteliers to sell rooms they haven't been able to fill at the normal price. So at the last minute they are made available, usually at a slight discount, to try and maximise occupancy.

From the vast number of coaches and cars in the town during the Extravaganza week end there are many who cannot get or don't want hotels. It is just a day out for many folk and not a four day break.
This can be seen from the number of vehicles leaving the town in the late afternoon and evening, and the total lack of parking places even on the normally banned areas.

Just that many people attend the Extravaganza purely on a daily basis and that hotels should get filled up without any trouble. It is May Holiday weekend after all, which has always been a Holiday time with or without Extravaganza. Your efforts are to applauded, just a pity you don't get more support, then it could be all plain sailing.

It is May Holiday weekend after all, which has always been a Holiday time with or without Extravaganza.
Not really, as it only became a bank holiday in 1978. The event was started because the new holiday wasn't established fully and the idea was to increase visitor numbers. The question is whether the Extravaganza makes a difference. I suspect it does.

Another point worth considering is the large number of bed spaces that have been lost over the past few years. Star at the Bedford and work down to the other end of town. Even our old place has closed as an Hotel. You can only sell bed-nights if you have the capacity.

I think this is worthy of an explanation and might just bring some enlightenment to some of our out of touch forum members.
From Hollins list (13 Hotels) I’ve removing the Imperial and St. Georges Hotels who always charge in excess of the smaller Hotels plus the Broadway who have put their rates up beyond belief, just for the Extravaganza week-end, the average cost of a double room over the May Bank Holiday is £81:66p (10 Hotels)
From that 20% is to pay the VAT (£16:32p), 15% commission to Late Rooms, Expedia, Booking.com etc. (£12:24) Staff Wage Bill, Gas Electric and Water charges, Rates Bill, Food Bill, Hotel Insurance x 2 (Mostyns for Fire Cover and Private for the rest), Laundry costs, Commercial Rubbish collection,Employers Non Contributory National Insurance Tax on Profits at 8%, Income Tax at 20%, Mortgage repayments or Overdraft payments if you were unfortunate enough to need them plus a myriad of other overheads that crop up all the time.
Operating a Hotel in the 21st Century is not a licence to print money like it was back in the 50’s and 60’s. From a personal perspective (16 years running a promenade Hotel) we were charging £80:00p a night back in 2009 and look at how overheads have risen since then. Just as an aside I truly believe we would have been full that week-end with or without the Extravaganza.
I hope my explanation shows why the financial support from the smaller establishments can’t be there and possibly why Llandudno is now losing so many smaller operators. ££$

Because it is really good and some companies use it for their executives to stay in the area.

I agree with you Blongb-- you either charge accordingly like some of the aforementioned places who use these booking agencies to cover what they take from you, or you charge less, 'paddle your own canoe' and make a lilttle more.
Consider--- you have the % that these people take( I have been told 15%, but don't quote me on that)-- the fee for debit/credit card machine (Which you have to have for these things) and the resulting bank and rental charges for same. Then there are things like laundry ( if you use one), staff ( if you have any) and all the usual expenses of rates, insurance etc, etc.
Also-- if a booking is taken by these people, if you aren't careful, certain people book a double room and then appear with any amount of hangers on, be they children or whatever and traipse in! Friends have had this many times and without anything else the fire inspectors wouldn't be pleased with a room crammed with people complete with cooking pots and large families !

When "certain people" called to book a room with us, we always asked them to confirm how many people the room was being booked for. (The importance of being in control of your own booking system) Some were most indignant when they were told it would not be acceptable for their mother-in-law to sleep on the floor. Also had a single woman parent accuse me of discrimination because I wouldn't accept a family room booking for herself and her four children. &shake&

As mentioned in a previous post, we did have an Hotel in the Town, so know a little bit about things! As for having 10 rooms, no thanks! I retired 16 years ago and have done my bit for the Country! The Country can support me now.

We are losing three very good members at the end of this years event and unless we replace them soon it will be very hard to continue,so it may not be the lack of support or help that finally ends our event.
-
Glad to say we are really working hard for this years event,im glad to see most hotels full and many coaches coming in for daytrips to the extravaganza,no steam train this year but it is coming for the air show,we bhave a little suprise on the Sat afternoon and we hope to have the Welsh fusiliers band.

Very interesting, Blongb. Here's a question for you - why is it I can obtain a hotel room more cheaply through a site like booking.com than if I contact the hotel directly? I've noticed this several times and it seems to make no sense for the hotel from a financial point of view.
I spent many years working for accountancy practices in the area in which time I did book-keeping and accounts preparation for quite a few local hotels. The smaller places do ok, especially those where the owners do all the work so there's no need for any employees, but even pre-recession the bigger hotels were seriously struggling to make any sort of profit. Given that a lot of their costs will be fixed (rates, insurance, etc...) it makes sense to fill as many rooms as possible even it means reducing the price of some....80% of the going rate is going to be a lot better than 0%.
Also booking.com is a global brand. Anyone across the planet looking for a hotel in Llandudno, Gwynedd can get a list of available places on the dates they require in a matter of seconds. Given the number of hotels in Llandudno, and the fact that even the residents of the town probably couldn't name more than a dozen of them, how likely is it that in this day and age people will spend time searching out details of hotels and phoning around rather than just going straight to booking.com? Just consider any commission/discount as an advertising cost and it all make sense.
-
We will be putting out a letter next week asking for the hotels, pubs, cafes ,restaurants and shops to make a small donation towards next years event,i have spent or lost a half day meeting the authorities, lots of evenings sorting out funfair on Mostyn st so if the response is poor i shall walk,i don;t want thank you;s,i don;t want any credits but if we fail to get support then i will not be wasting anymore of my time to line the pockets of this town.I have done the extrava for many a year and love seeing the town full, the local kids having a good weekend, the old steam tractions, marching bands but with ever increasing bills without the buissnesses support i will walk, there will be a few very happy but i would like to think the town will miss the extravaganza.
-
Well Wrex Silence speaks a thousand words, I think its time to wrap things up and finish the event as we can see from the response nobody cares. it would have been nice just for 1 little note but nothing, all the things we have to put in place to get the event past the Safety Advisory Group is enough of a challenge never mind all the bill's we have to pay all the measuring you and I do in the dead of winter and the weekend working from 06:30am to 9pm plus and what for ? we cant keep going as it is, we are after all volunteers and we need new blood but they only want the glory or paying.
-
I think its time to wrap things up and finish the event as we can see from the response nobody cares.
I doubt you could, even if you wanted to. As I said here (http://threetownsforum.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,457.msg69998.html#msg69998) quite some time ago, the event is now self-sustaining. If Len Ricketts (Transport Festival) were to throw in the towel, perhaps it might falter but I suspect it would simply go on of its own accord, now.
Seventeen years ago something was created which has now assumed a life of its own.
-
Ian, I would like to think you are right.
But to be honest, your post is a little dismissive of the great work Wrex and his colleagues do.
I really appreciate it, as do the majority I think... but I miss most of the Extravaganza these days as I am required to work at those busy times of year.
It's like a game of Kep-Plunk, take out one or two key people and it will creak but survive.
Take out another, and another and the whole thing will collapse.
Don't be disheartened at the response on here Guys, just because no one actually joins in to do the graft.
But, I wouldn't mind seeing a poll setup on here, along the lines of.... Victorian Extravaganza, would you miss it if it stopped?
-

Help for the Friday road closures, and set up on May 2nd would be a huge plus to our team!"

But to be honest, your post is a little dismissive of the great work Wrex and his colleagues do.
I don't think so. I'm not making any adverse comments about "the great work Wrex and his colleagues do" because I know exactly what they do.
I believe the big question is what would happen if the committee members simply stopped en masse. Would the event fail to materialise? Or would others simply pick up the reins? To my certain knowledge the event has been 'doomed' five times since its inception, yet each time it's appeared - as if by clockwork - the following year. And let's not miss the point that - as has been pointed out - they're all volunteers. So no one has to do anything.
I remember some years ago seeing a woman sorting out all the tables and chairs in Trinity Church Hall. I made a light hearted comment about it, and she replied, Tersely "Well, if I didn't do it no one would." I asked her if she'd ever tried it.
-
I don;t mind spending MY time helping Llandudno have a very busy weekend,we do get support from a few it just annoys me when there are plenty of buisnesses banking thousands on the Tuesday morning and not giving the Extravaganza a second thought, thank you or a penny.

Whist I appreciate your work and your sentiments towards the Town's Traders, I think you must have regard for the very high costs that these businesses have. Owning any business, especially a shop, is not an automatic Gold Mine. Even if it is a real Gold Mine it is not always a viable enterprise.
Business Rents and Rates are at an all time high and the effect of all communities, not just Llandudno, is obvious from the large number of closed and boarded up buildings. The enormous number of Supermarkets and Charity Shops are also weakening our past successful and useful retail centres.
I am sure that if the Town's Traders could afford to support the Extravaganza in a bigger and better way they would.
It should also be borne in mind that not all businesses see a benefit from the weekend!

Yorkie i appreciate all about the rates etc and im sure the extravaganza pays their rates ,rents etc etc for quite a few months, its not the extravaganza;s fault that all other times are hard.If the traders don;t support then it will go,up to now there are 100 coaches decending on the town that weekend(daytrips that is) and im not sure what the traders want us to do.I can take anything on the chin because i know how busy the event is and everybody makes a good penny, but getting them to give just a small amount just does;nt cross their minds.
-
Funny how your previous comment went without a response and since I put a little note to support you Wrex everybody wants to talk about the event, come on Llandudno you've got to keep the event going !
-
since I put a little note to support you Wrex everybody wants to talk about the event
That's hardly surprising, since your posting was both belligerent and accusatory:
Well Wrex Silence speaks a thousand words, I think its time to wrap things up and finish the event as we can see from the response nobody cares.
not to mention short on facts:
it would have been nice just for 1 little note but nothing
There's a lot of support for the event in here, as you would know if you re-read this topic. Wrex, however, posts his little rants with regular frequency, and the fact that no one commented on the latest was not a sign that "nobody cares". It was simply evidence that people have heard it all before - regularly.
We know there's a lot involved, as you keep reminding everyone, but you chose to become involved. Many in here cannot, because of other commitments, and some have done it themselves for several years.
the weekend working from 06:30am to 9pm plus and what for ?
That's the question, isn't it? Why do you do it? There's a huge body of evidence in Psychology that supports the theory that people only do what they want to do. The motives behind your contribution are probably similar to the lady I saw in Trinity sorting tables and chairs: you do it because it gives you a sense of achievement, of purpose and clarity and you enjoy the camaraderie. And that's great. If a leisure pursuit you enjoy also helps the town then fine, but don't assume because there were no responses to Wrex's posting that no one cares. They might just prefer sorting chairs in the church. Remember: you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar...

Yorkie i appreciate all about the rates etc and im sure the extravaganza pays their rates ,rents etc etc for quite a few months. . . . .
It is pretty obvious Wrex that you have never been involved in a retail business or any business in which there is a demand for major overhead costs. Some small shops have to take thousands of pounds every week just to pay for the stock and overheads, without making a penny piece of profit. Plc companies have shareholders who want their pound of flesh so they have to watch every sou they spend. And us poor old pensioners are having to tighten our belts!

Many small retail businesses actually pay very little in the way of Business Rates, due to Small Business Rate Relief.

All im saying Yorkie is what are you on about,we even help small buisnesses make a few grand or we don;t.
And what I'm saying is not all businesses gain and not all businesses can afford to pay.
This place is supposed to be a holiday resort, even the Queen of Welsh Resorts, so entertainment, and the like should be developed by the Councils along with the Community. All we have seen in past years are beds spaces disappearing, shops closing, and absolutely zilch entertainment or pleasure facilities being provided, Extravaganza excepted. Yet CCBC are continually bleeding the local businesses and the ratepayers to finance even worse local services and very little support for us lot. Even the bloody Libraries are being shut down!

Yorkie is right, apart from the creepy alice project the council do nothing to encourage tourism, we need the theatre to have shows, the beach to be top notch, the gardens to be full of flowers, good lighting, good seating areas, a big wheel , boat trips, and so on........
-
I'm never sure whether my little business benefits from the Extravaganza or not. Because I am equally busy (or not) on the weekends either side of that weekend. I just know that I enjoy it when I get to take part.
I think it's a great occasion and one which I would be gutted to see come to an end.
The Pier company reckon that we don't benefit really, as most of those walking on the pier do so to avoid spending more in the town, and come on in the late afternoon and evening when they have spent up. I'm not so sure about that, I can sometimes squeeze a few more bob out of them.
I also bring quite a few family members down for the duration who enjoy it, and spend money (mostly mine) throughout the three days. So it's quite an expensive but enjoyable time for me.
I don't get much chance to see the attractions, and if I thought that the other local traders were contributing a bit towards it, then so would I..... but I know there are quite deep and mixed feelings amongst them.
-
Observation Yorkie, what do you think the thousands do with their money, let me tell you, eat, drink and sleep.

Like our town council Yorkie, you tell them till your blue in the face and they still don;t listen.

Hmmm... Statistics are tricky things. But they are available.
First: do more people visit during the weekend than a normal weekend? Yes, and the evidence for that is in increased coach numbers, additional train numbers and the money taken by the Transport Festival Car park scheme on Bodafon.
Second: do more people visit during the weekend than any other bank holiday weekend? That's harder to judge, and you'd need to look at two factors: food and beverage takings for that weekend compared with other BH times and then bed availability - again, as a direct comparison. But the purely empirical evidence has always been from the NW Police service, who have noted in the past that the queues of traffic leaving Llandudno and travelling along the A55 towards Liverpool and Manchester are at their heaviest during the Extravaganza weekend.
Third: are overall takings up in the town during that weekend? This is the nub of the matter, and the one hardest to prove, because the shops won't release their takings figures. There is anecdotal evidence, such as the fact that places like WH Smith have long argued their takings for the Extravaganza weekend are usually down on even a normal summer weekend, and people have to eat, so the people that don't bring their own butties in a bag have to pay.
Four: what's the overall perception of Llandudno as a destination for a day visitor on that weekend? I suspect it depends on your particular preferences: it clearly attracts the steam engine fraternity and those who enjoy slightly ropey fairgrounds with their associated crowds and noise. But it almost certainly deters those who are looking for a quiet weekend by the seaside.
There's also the undeniable fact that those visiting only have a certain amount of cash, and between the Transport Festival and the fairgrounds there's a lot of competition for that limited supply.
But where the event scores heavily is in more indefinable ways. It creates an aim, a purpose if you like, for the numbers of volunteers who might otherwise be sitting about with little to do. They come together throughout the year, at meetings, various strategy sessions and exercises and attempt to create the enthusiasm for the project which clearly so many lack. If it does anything, it demonstrates clearly what a few motivated and dedicated individuals can achieve in the face of, frankly, tremendous odds and rather a lot of naysaying. I suspect that's one of its most valuable assets.
Yorkie is right, apart from the creepy alice project the council do nothing to encourage tourism, we need the theatre to have shows, the beach to be top notch, the gardens to be full of flowers, good lighting, good seating areas, a big wheel , boat trips, and so on........
So what are you doing about it, llewelyn? What projects to improve the town are you a part of? What has been your contribution to improving the Town of Llandudno over this past year? Because that's how long Wrex and Barney have been working to produce the Festival. And if you know of a sure-fire and relatively simple way to fill the theatres, create a world-class beach, renew all the lighting, install a big wheel and ensure a flotilla of boats doing trips around the bay then please tell us all, so we can pass the news to Judith. I guarantee you it'll be front page news.
CCBC and LTC catch it in the neck for not doing anything all the time, so let's see some of those who complain all the time stand for council. Yorkie's done it. What about others?
We're all part of the same community and we all want a place that's pleasant to walk around and enjoy in the sunshine. To keep it like that we need the visitors and we need traders who think it's worthwhile investing in the town. The Extravaganza just might help in that regard.
-

There is anecdotal evidence, such as the fact that places like WH Smith have long argued their takings for the Extravaganza weekend are usually down on even a normal summer weekend, and people have to eat, so the people that don't bring their own butties in a bag have to pay.
My parents once owned a shop in Llandudno. They took it over as a going concern and were advised by the previous owner not to bother opening when the Extravaganza was on. The first time around the old man decided to give it a go despite the advice and dragged me along to help him. We opened up at 8.30am and straight away took £20, thanks to a local coming in early so he could get out of town ASAP. By lunchtime our sales had risen to about £30 at which point we locked up and went home to save wasting any more time chasing a lost cause. I can't remember the exact figures now but takings must have been down about £500-600 on an normal Saturday during the tourist season, although they may have made some of that back from their regulars the following week. I don't believe that my parents would have wanted to see the Extravangza come to an end despite their losses but at the same time I don't think they would have felt any obligation to make a donation over and above what the event was already costing them.

Sorry about that Llandudnotrust but we are few on the ground and coming home from work and then having to chase people and things around sometimes things get missed,we just ain;t got the eager volunteers.
This comment requires me to make a further observation. Why is there a dearth of enthusiastic volunteers? If the Extravaganza is of great benefit to the town, where are the people who consider it as such, and are capable and willing to give the enterprise their time?
Or is there a simpler explanation? ££$

Unfortunetley only a handfull of people will give their time for free Yorkie all others are too busy to give this town the boost it recieves.

Hi Wrex, After reading past posts, you have my admiration and respect, from experience it's always the few who end up, time after time, doing the work, and burning out, also volunteers are a difficult group to handle, time factors etc.
My own experience ended, with getting in a paid manager and organiser which turned out very well, for us.
From reading the previous posts, I don't know if this could be funded, a lot feel they pay enough already, but thinking along those lines, I followed up on Truro's example as mentioned in the Xmas lighting section, I'll post the link, but they have to be read in conjunction, if nothing else it leaves a lot for discussion.
this position would be private not council.

here you are Wrex I found this in the local rag apparently the Extravaganza has only been going for 22 years instead of 28 years and normally one of the biggest events, correction it is the BIGGEST and its also a huge boost for the area and economy, pity you only get a small grant .........oh and the whole town gets transformed in to a fairground, the only smidgen of truth is the last paragraph "The event will include an array of attractions and entertainment, which will fill up the streets between Northwestern gardens (bog island to us locals) and upper Mostyn Street".
-
I remember being a volunteer steward outside the railway station along with other round tablers in 1986.
-
That was, indeed, the very first Extravaganza, Bri. I believe the second and third were the best, as the event was hitting its stride by then. The '91 Extravaganza was the last of the original events. That year, because of the most unbelievably arrogant and immature behaviour on the part of one deluded individual the event was taken over by the Llandudno Heritage Trust.

What a shame it did,nt carry on as it was, would have saved me a lot of bother.wages, time,oh well anyone who wants to take it back to its former glory feel free.

I think this will be my last year involved,i fully understand the its a funfair, its a funfair but without the person to pull it around it will not change.Funfair brings in the money, money pays the steam engines, money pays the entertainment, money pays the police, money pays marching bands band so until a very special person comes along with a plan it will be very hard to move on,Each year the bills increase and the pressure to bring in more money is there, its a great event and pulls in the people but with so much grief it needs change and it needs a human being to do it,send in your cv;s now lol.

You've lasted longer than many, wrex. However, things are looking good for the area just now, so it might at long last be possible to ignite a spark of interest from some of the major players in the area in terms of sponsorship. It might be worth making approaches to Costa, McDs, Arriva, Stabucks and Nero, and even Travelodge might come on board.

Well we are still having one this year,no cancelations

Wrex,
We are delighted to hear that, it's a magnificent time for Llandudno.
However, it's spoilt by the inclusion of the Monkey Man, Star War Troopers etc. that degrade the whole event.
If it wasn't for the inclusion of various misfits and stayed true to the original theme, many more of us would be pleased to volunteer to assist.

Not really worried about star wars characters as the kids love them and if people come along and offer their time i ain;t going to say no.The whole event could do with reorganising but by who and how will money be obtained to eliminate some of the fair, anybody can offer help but we must have ideas on fundraising because bills go up and up.

Wrex, with all due respect, the people that are drawn into the town and a great many business owners have the expectation of things 'Victorian' and are disappointed by the dumbing down of the event with the inclusion of such as these 'characters' and, to be frank, other peripheral tat. Many people avoid the town on the extravaganza dates because of this, when if the event kept to the original theme of the Victoriana that celebrates Llandudno, it would draw in far more people and, accordingly, sponsorship. That's a brief synopsis of everything that I have heard (and seen) of the event over the past few years from visitors, locals and business owners alike.
-
I have seen on Facebook that the wonderful Mr Alexander will not be there this year, that is a great shame! :(

Very constructive meeting last night under new chairman Kevin Chin.I think Kevin will start to turn the event aroundCannot cut funfair yet or we have to cut steam engines and bands in the parade and i don;t want that and i think people would moan if we cut the number of traction engines and bands without noticing a few rides dissapearing.

Has Llandudno's Victorian Extravaganza had its day? Daily Post readers have their say
The annual event attracted thousands of people to the town, but not everyone was happy.
Cafes and restaurant owners were furious that the organisers had allowed burger vans and other food sellers into the town, and that many had set up outside Llandudno food businesses.
Morgan Austin, who owns Johnny Dough’s Pizzas , said he was £4,000 down on takings because of the annual festival.

If businesses can't capitalise on this amazing event then THEY who need to look at how they are running them rather than trying to blame others. It's three great days a year, surely their businesses can't be that fragile?
-
If you're running a food business it's hardly fair for someone to park a massive food van right in front of your premises! Business rates are not exactly cheap and they pay a lot of money to have those great spots on Mostyn Street.
Reminds me of this

All credit to the organisers, I wouldn't like to be in their shoes. It must be a mammoth task to get everything in place. I too had noticed more food stalls including things like slush and garish coloured ice-cream as well as hot-dogs and burgers. !
The charity shop which I help in had a bumper weekend, our manageress had hoarded lots of Victorian bric-a-brac and her ideas paid off, we volunteers, on Monday, dressed up and received lots of kind comments from customers, we were kept busy all afternoon scanning and wrapping goods. ( Not good when you are sweltering hot !).
If I had to be critical I would comment that it has got rather too big !

Since the event started the vitriol and sheer unpleasantness of some of the business owners has been a regular occurrence. But it's drifted away from the halcyon days of the first few events. The parades then were something to see: stilt walkers, at least two military bands, barbershop women's choir, jugglers and a lot of steam engines. But as Nem says it's down to volunteers to organise and it's mighty stressful in the week leading up to it and the first day.

One business in the article said that they weren't happy with exactly this situation although they added that the burgers from the van were more expensive than theirs. So why didn't they have someone standing in front of the van with a sign saying "cheaper/better burgers from the shop behind"? Form an orderly queue...

People are sheep unfortunately that's why they listen to Ed Sheeran and buy bad quality burgers at £4 instead of decent ones at £2.70. But that is people for you, signs won't make any difference.

This year's parade had stilt walkers, steam engines, 2 military bands (at least), ... it was great I thought.
The only thing missing were the Star Wars storm troopers... GOOD!

And the three days would have been the perfect opportunity for Mr Waldron to promote his proposed erection for the former Pier Pavilion site. Mind you maybe the punters would mistake him for the "throw a sponge at the goalie" stall.
I hope this shop on the pier had been sorted out before the event. It was moved into that position over a year ago.

Llandudno's Victorian Extravaganza organisers 'know event must change'
The chairman of Llandudno's Victorian Extravaganza has said changes will need to be made to the event next year.
Chris Williams, who took on the role as chairman in December 2016, has said there will be a fairer balance between a modern and Victorian event.
The three-day festival was criticised by local business owners after organisers had allowed burger vans and other food outlets to set up outside food businesses.
Daily Post readers also voiced their concern that the festival may have had its day.
Mr Williams said: "I'm glad it's all come out. We need to reform, reorganise and to be Victorian."
"We have to deal with the in house problems first and the wheels are already in motion for next year."
"I want to see all the shops get involved and to get out onto the streets like a market with local shops and charities."
It is a slow process and was never going to happen this year."
Mr Williams added: "Businesses need to realise the knock-on effect on the economy and people who will keep coming back."
"We've had messages on Facebook from people saying they're already booking their hotel for next year."
Thousands of people flocked to the seaside town to enjoy the fairground rides, magicians, street performers and classic Punch and Judy.
Revelers from as far as New Zealand and Canada came out to experience the 31st event over the Bank Holiday weekend.
He continued: "Next year there will be a better balance and it will make it cheaper for families."
"I do agree the event does need a shape up and as a team we want to make the town proud."
"It is very hard to keep some things going and does involve more than people realise."
Mr Williams had previously said he wished more business owners would help the volunteer led committee who organise the annual event.
"I'm glad businesses are listening and we can work together with each other."

The 'gamble' that Victorian Extravaganza organisers are taking to get it back its old glory
Annual festivities came in for criticism last year, with claims it had lost its way and its unique charm.
The new chairman of the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza admits this year’s event will be a gamble as fair rides are cut back in favour of a Victorian style street market and sideshows.
The event held on May 5-7 celebrates the local Victorian heritage and the Victorian heritage in fairground and entertainment.
Chris Williams says the focus for this year’s three-day occasion is for it to go back to its roots, and has promised a more authentic Victorian experience.
Last year the organisers were criticised for allowing so many fast food sellers and modern fairground rides. One Llandudno restaurant owner even claimed the extravaganza has had its day, and the seaside town needed to take a more “21st Century approach” to attract visitors.
“There’s going to be far more of a Victorian feel about it, with a much bigger Victorian zone with vintage fairground rides, Victorian style sideshows and a steam engine arena.
“We are also organising a Victorian themed street market selling local produce, and businesses are getting involved with selling street food.”
“People did complain about there being too many modern fairground rides so from 123 plots we’ve reduced the fairground plots to 57.
“The modern rides aren’t scrapped completely as it’s important not to have something for the town’s teenagers. But they are being moved to another part of town, including a 35m big wheel.”
Mr Williams, who runs HTC Entertainment & Events added: “We’ve been working hard with Llandudno Hospitality Association, Mostyn Estates and Llandudno’s Chamber of Commerce to make this year’s even one of the best ever.” https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/gamble-victorian-extravaganza-organisers-taking-14332868 (https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/gamble-victorian-extravaganza-organisers-taking-14332868)

Event organisers have said a new look Victorian Extravaganza this year is set to be the best ever.
Last year's event saw a change in the running of the event with a greater focus on the Victorian element and larger fair ground rides moved into the Llandudno Town Hall car park to open up the high street for businesses to get involved more with the event.
This year's event looks set to continue the trend of change with event organiser, Chris Williams from HTC Events and Entertainment, hinting at more changes.
Mr Williams said: "The Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza committee decided to reduce the number of fair ground rides at the 2018 event.
"We also moved a few larger rides into the town hall car park to create more space to move freely throughout the town.
"These adjustments along with the addition of more old-time fairground rides and exhibits, were deemed to be a great success.
"As a committee we are now looking to build on this and make sure the 2019 event is even better and set up the same thoughtful way of following last year's blue print."
The 2019 Victorian Extravaganza - set to be held on May 4, 5 and 6 - will see an increase in live entertainment including bands and a circus and big top tent putting on a variety of shows.
Mr Williams said the Llandudno Town Band would be returning to the event after a three year hiatus.
The focus on the Victorian theme would continue into this year's event with some nice prizes on offer for the best dressed family.
The committee has released a letter listing a range of sponsorship packages which make it clear where the main costs and focus are set to lie for the May Bank Holiday weekend event.
The top four sponsorship packages which are more than £1000 are all for entertainment stages, with organisers attempting to provide as much free entertainment as possible.
With the event just a few months away Mr Williams said he and the committee are excited to be able to provide the biggest event on the Llandudno calendar.
He added: "We are set to stage one of the biggest extravaganza's in the 33rd year of the event.
"We have been working really hard and everyone is very excited about this year's event.
"There were a few issues with the noise levels in some areas last year, but we have been working hard to try and reduce that this year." ref Pioneer

It's a shame the contact form uses a Gmail address.
Whats wrong with Gmail?

Well, for starters it's owned by Google. But more than that I would have expected the Extravaganza folk to use a domain address. Just looks that bit more professional.

Well, for starters it's owned by Google. But more than that I would have expected the Extravaganza folk to use a domain address. Just looks that bit more professional.
I use Gmail, I find it fine. I think a lot of people find it tricky to set up an email address on a domain, when its sometimes easier to just add another Gmail account to your main one.
-
In September last year Google claimed it had stopped scanning Gmails, which it had been doing routinely but admitted it was still allowing numerous outside firms (https://www.thesun.co.uk/tech/7312296/google-read-gmail-emails-snoop/) to do so.
I suppose some do find setting up domain addresses tricky, although the main culprit is usually the spf record. But they should ask us. We'd happily help them out.

Mrs H. just mentioned about next years altered bank holiday dates, which made me think about the Extravaganza, anyone heard any news.
One of next year's bank holidays will move from a Monday to a Friday to coincide with the 75th anniversary of VE Day.
The change will see the early May Day bank holiday moved back four days next year and will form part of a three-day weekend of commemorative events.
Business Secretary Greg Clark announced the holiday will move four days later - from Monday, May 4 to Friday, May 8 in 2020 so that people can pay tribute to those who served in the Second World War.
VE Day - or Victory in Europe Day - is marked on May 8 and commemorates the Allies accepting the surrender of Nazi Germany in the Second World War. https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/uk-news/ve-day-bank-holiday-2020-16399797 (https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/uk-news/ve-day-bank-holiday-2020-16399797)

Both the Extravaganza and the Transport Festival will be affected by this and neither group has yet made any statement about what they plan to do which is very disappointing. Many visitors to those events book their accommodation a year in advance, so now they find they may have booked the 'wrong' weekend. Hotels and B&Bs are in the same boat - do they move bookings or not? The events can't really run for two days instead of three on what would have been the bank holiday weekend. If they move to the following weekend they will clash with the VE events plus rides & vehicles may already be committed elsewhere. Moving to the late May bank holiday would have the same problems. Given how much money and huge number of visitors both events bring to the area we really need a clear statement from the organisers as soon as possible.
-
It's also hit calender producers extremely badly. Most desk and weekly calendars are produced a year or more in advance.
-
The cancellation of the Jess Glynn 'gig' in Colwyn Bay is also bound to affect hotel bookings .
-
From their FB page.
"As of Tuesday 9th July 2019 the Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza team are committed to organising the 2020 event over the 8th, 9th & 10th May.
These three days are our provisional choice, we are aware this will also be the weekend for VE Day celebrations and the team are fully committed to embracing that and making it a big part of the event.
After much consideration we have decided it’s completely not viable to run the event for two days. We will now consult with the relevant authorities and make an official announcement when the date is 100% confirmed.
If this date cannot be agreed it would take considerable financial backing to see the event run for two days. If any of the many hotels and business would like to offer their financial backing to make this happen please contact us."
Thanks for your patience and support.

THIS years Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza will not feature its usual daily midday parade. ref pioneer
The three-day event, during the bank holiday weekend of April 29 May 1, wont see a return of the usual 12pm festivities due to money and manpower.
It typically saw an wide range of groups and vehicles walk through the town?s main streets, but this will not be taking place this year.
A statement from the organisers read: Unfortunately, the rumours about the parade being cancelled for this year are true.
Until yesterday, we had hoped this wouldnt be the case, but we can?t turn our decision around, and so the time is right to inform you, our visitors.
?This is not a decision we have made lightly but we have done it for the future of the event.
?For anyone asking why, the bottom line is money and manpower - two things many events that have now folded have struggled with since the pandemic.?
The extravaganza, which has been established for roughly 35 years and is free to attend, did not take place in 2020 or 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but enjoyed a successful return in 2022.
It often attracts more than 200,000 people to the town across the weekend.
This year, the extravaganza will also host its first fringe festival, with a number of comedy and magic acts performing.
The statement added: Our small committee will continue to work hard to ensure a great weekend and everything will be done to bring back the parade bigger and better next year.
In the meantime, we need your support this year, so please get behind the event and join us for a great weekend.
Keep an eye for exciting announcements about the steam arena and stage entertainment. Weve still got nine large traction engines attending this year.?
The extravaganza also includes street entertainers, stalls, full-size live steam traction engines, shop window displays and much more.

Llandudno Extravaganza organisers dismiss claims over attendance figures and threat to future
The event organisers say attendance numbers were consistent with previous years and they are already planning for 2024
local historian John Lawson-Reay has written to say he believes crowds were well down on previous years. He said pictures used in the Daily Post showed the streets were not as packed as they usually are for the weekend.
He claimed the loss of the old railway goods yard - now being developed for housing - had impacted the event as it had previously been used for storage. He added that people should "not be surprised" if next year's event gets cancelled.
However Chris Williams, chairman and director of Llandudno Victorian Extravaganza, said they were already excited to start planning for 2024 and that the station goods yard issue had no impact on the event.
Mr Lawson Reay's letter said: "The photograph you published of Mostyn Street illustrates the total lack of attendees. On any other year this part of Mostyn Street would have shown the visitors almost shoulder to shoulder.
