Ringing competition this coming Saturday afternoon, organised by the North Wales Association of Church Bellringers, at Hope Church (between Wrexham and Chester).

We intend entering a team from Holy Trinity and I will let you know if we do well. On the other hand if things don't go well ......................

Things didn't go well so I will just say that Welshpool won and now go on to represent North Wales in the All Wales Competition at the end of the month.
Our friends from Bangor came 2nd - well done guys!

HSBC Guild of Bellringers are visiting North Wales this weekend led by Richard Danby. They will be based in Llandudno and will visit and ring bells in towers across the region including Holy Trinity's on Sunday morning.

I cannot give a definite "yes" or "no" to that Ian, but I would have thought not.

There are in fact lots of bellringers who apart from being members of their regional associations, belong to a group such as this one and meet on say an annual basis by way of reunion or the such like.
The name of one group I know call themselves "The Rambling Ringers" and it conjures up an image in my mind of in days gone by, them wandering from village/town and ringing bells whenever they chanced to reach a church tower.
I will see if I can come up with some other unusual titles.

You may or may not be surprised that there is a weekly publication for bellringers called unsurprisingly "The Ringing World".

A quick glance at this week's edition reminds me of The Ancient Society of College Youths and the Society of Royal Cumberland Youths, two very well known guilds in bellringing circles.
Mention is also made of the Guild of Post and Telecom Ringers.

Bell-ringing retains enormous popularity in the home counties, but it's my impression that rural and semi-rural areas are where it seems to flourish.
Title: Re: Bellringing
Post by: Bellringer on October 02, 2010, 05:21:38 pm
I'm not sure that's true Ian - there are "hot spots" both in town and country and of course a distinct shortage of ringers in certain parts of both.

Most of the universities have guilds of ringers and they are generally well supported by the students - Bangor has such a guild.

There is also a Clerical Guild of Bellringers - quite a number of clergy are in fact bellringers

Yes there was one episode where someone kept "bumping off" the bellringers and the team won a striking competition with three ringers ringing two bells each. There are very few ringers who can do such a thing and to most ringers this part of the storyline was a bit "ambitious" to say the least! :speechless:

Some 26 members of the HSBC Guild of Bellringers have been based in Llandudno for the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed the experience from what I have been told. They had been looked after very well at the Tan Lan Hotel on the West Shore, and enjoyed the food at Mama Rosa's and the Queen Victoria (despite the fuse blowing).
They rang Holy Trinity's bells before the morning service and then dispersed to various parts of the UK, the furthest travelling home to Worthing in Sussex.

Quite a few visitors to the Church Open Day yesterday showed interest in the Bellringing display which included older and more modern items, pictures and photographs. One of the older photographs of Holy Trinity bellringers (shown below) we had no details for, but one of our elderly parishioners viewing the display suddenly exclaimed that one of the men was in fact her father (seated on the ground front left), and she put the date as about 1912. The father's name was Arthur Appleton but whether we can ever name any of the other men I suppose must be doubtful.

We are currently looking to add 2/3 more ringers to our band, so if you have previously had some experience why not come along? I'm sure you will find us a sociable lot.
If you would like to see how bells are rung with a view to perhaps learning, then you will be equally welcome.

Practice night: Friday 7.30pm - 9pm. Venue: Holy Trinity Church. For more details see www.llandudno-parish.org.uk (http://www.llandudno-parish.org.uk)

A little irritation tonight during our practice night, someone from a window on an upper floor of the Alexandra Hotel shone a red beamed light at our ringing chamber window. It didn't last very long but I was the one in direct line  while ringing our number 7 bell.
I would like to think this was a bit of a joke rather than a serious action of complaint as we have been ringing the bells on a Friday night for many years. If you do dislike the bells why not come across and have a word with us and maybe even have a go yourself.

The muffles will remain on the bells until next Sunday morning when Holy Trinity's bells will be rung prior to the Remembrance Service which starts at 9.45am.
This service will be followed by a march/procession to the Cenotaph for a further short service and the "two minute silence" at 11am.

The quarter peal was successfully rung in the presence of Brian's wife Betty and other members of the family.
The ringers were:- Ellen Jenkins, Lynne Ferriday, Chris Wheatley, Jason Walker, David Raggett and Stan Whittaker.

On Sat. 13 November a visiting group of ringers led by Ben Gooch from Gloucester rang Holy Trinity's bells.

Today the bells were rung half muffled as is traditional prior to the Civic Remembrance Service at Holy Trinity which was then followed by the march and procession to the Cenotaph.

Yesterday our retirement group had their Christmas dinner at the Queens Hotel in Llandudno and after the meal and a few games we were entertained by the Trinity Church Bellringers.
We all enjoyed the Christmas carols that they played on their hand bells and they made it look so easy.  It was a pleasure listening to them and I just wish that our singing could have complimented the sound of the bells.
Having seen it first hand and spoken to Stan afterwards I can understand why he is so passionate about his hobby.

Thank you Hugo for those kind words.   :-[ We all enjoyed our visit to "entertain" you and your fellow members and I personally thought the singing was OK too - it complimented the ringing really rather nicely.

How good it was to see you all having fun, some can't believe that older people can have fun but it was quite amazing how much could be generated by playing a game involving an object in the middle of the 'playing area' and four lemons - bit like playing football with a rugby ball!

VV  Seasons greetings and best wishes to you and all your members.   I*

Yesterday was the AGM and ringing meeting of the North Wales Association of Church Bellringers (Gwynedd & West Clwyd Branch) held at St Thomas's Church in Rhyl. A good attendance of ringers from along the N Wales coast including five from Holy Trinity made this an excellent gathering with a good variety of ringing.

On Saturday 12 March the North Wales Association itself will hold a ringing event and its AGM at Holy Trinity. Hopefully this will attract ringers from across the whole region.

Sorry Paddy and thanks Nemesis.
From our point of view as hosts of this event, it was a very successful afternoon with a lot of nice comments from people passing, and from ringers who had traveled from other parts of North Wales, and in the case of four visitors, from beyond.
This type of event doesn't happen too often in our Church but I will warn you Paddy in advance that we shall be ringing the bells again on a Saturday afternoon ie 14 May for a wedding.

Suepp. You didn't come and introduce yourself.

Church bells are usually rung to announce to people in the vicinity that a service is about to be held and of course at Holy Trinity we practice our ringing on a Friday night.

Tonight at about 8pm a gentleman who was suffering from head and chest pains heard the bells and therefore knew that there was someone in the church who might help him to get medical attention. We rang for an ambulance and before the call was completed, an ambulance arrived and the two paramedics took over. They took him off to hospital but unfortunately we do not know which one, his name or any other details and how he now is. His vehicle registration number suggests he is from Essex so he must be staying in the area. We do hope he is OK.

Credit to the ambulance service for arriving so quickly especially when it has been reported in the last day or so that the service is not meeting its arrival targets to call outs.

He had stopped his car outside the Church main gates because he felt unwell, had the presence of mind to lock it, and then had made his way in through the tower doors where we found him.

The only thing we had time to do before the ambulance whisked him away was to establish where his car was and that it was locked. First thing this morning the car was still there but in the last half hour it has gone, so at best we assume he is OK and has collected the car himself, or arranged for someone to move it. It would have been an irony to be in hospital and a warden putting tickets on it!

I returned from holiday later yesterday to discover the sad news that a stalwart of ringing in North Wales, Ron Miers, had died last Monday whilst on holiday in Scotland.

Ron was Ringing Master of the North Wales Association until 2008 and had been tower captain at Bangor for some years.

On Monday afternoon while it was blowing a gale and pouring with rain I was in the warmth of the Queen's Hotel enjoying a Christmas dinner with a Retirement Group. After enjoying a lovely meal and a few games we were entertained by the Trinity Bellringers who were back by popular request from our group.
Stan and the bellringers played a number of Carols but I'm afraid that our singing wasn't much better this year and didn't do the Bellringing true justice.
Thanks again Stan for inviting some of our members to try bellringing first hand and I'm sure that Rob and Keith who volunteered can now appreciate how much effort you put into your hobby.

There are on most days eucharist services at Holy Trinity usually starting at 11am, and a single bell is tolled for a few minutes beforehand to announce the fact to the general public. The service generally marks a Saint's Day and last Monday was St Stephen's Day. It is probably true to say that only a very small number attend these services.

Several told me this morning how nice it was to hear the bells yesterday afternoon. However my euphoria was soon dampened when someone said "but did it have to go on for so long?"

A peal is a peal and usually lasts for about 3 hours. They are not often rung on Holy Trinity's bells, one only last year in July, and this year, yesterday's and another one scheduled for the end of July. They are usually rung to mark a special occasion and will be rung all over the UK and beyond this year for the Diamond Jubilee and the start of the Olympics.

Stan has kindly sent me this photo of the new embroidered bag that will be used for the bell muffles at Holy Trinity Church in Llandudno. The design was created from a  photo of Trinity Church that I took and then created on a computerised embroidery machine by the very talented 'Big Wilf'.

Thanks for posting that David, it really does look good doesn't it?  Thanks for letting us use your photograph and many thanks for the generosity of Big Wilf.

The original embroidered bag is also well worth a look and will be on display in the bell tower from this weekend onwards. If anyone would to view it, then come along to any of our Friday evening practice sessions 7.30 - 9pm.

We are always looking for one or two extra ringers so if you have any ambitions to learn, please let me know. Contact details can be found on the Church website www.llandudno-parish.org.uk (http://www.llandudno-parish.org.uk)

Earlier this evening Holy Trinity bell tower hosted a visit by a group visiting North Wales. Members of the group were from various parts of the US and Canada and led by a bell ringer called Wray Lemke who is the tower captain at the Cathedral Church of St Luke and St Paul at Charleston, South Carolina. The photograph shows some of the group with yours truly.

A guest band of ringers from around the UK will be visiting Llandudno on Tuesday to ring a peal to mark the holding of the Olympic Games in London.
The ringing will start at approx. 9.45am and last for about 3 hours. The ringers are some of the best and so the quality of the ringing should be very good. I understand the method to be rung is Stedman Triples.

The peal attempt started on time at 9.45am and seems to be going well. It should be completed just before 12.45.
The method being rung IS Stedman triples.

The peal was successfully rung in 2 hrs 45mins. It was as said above, a peal to mark and celebrate the London Olympic Games.

I would just like to say that there are eight bells in Holy Trinity's tower and all eight were being rung this morning by eight 'human' ringers. I make this point because the Rector received an enquiry during the ringing asking if the bells had become 'stuck'. We can only assume the enquirer thought they were automated!!

Following reaction to last week's peal which lasted 2hrs 45mins and was rung to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic Games, we have decided not to allow any further peals for the rest of this year, and probably allow only one per year in future for special occasions.

Quarter peals lasting approximately 45 mins. will possibly be rung from time to time instead.

We apologise to anyone who was inconvenienced in any way last week. I would add that there is always an open invitation to anyone to come along and see how the bells are rung. For contact details see www.llandudno-parish.org.uk/bells.html (http://www.llandudno-parish.org.uk/bells.html)

A quarter peal (approx. 45 minutes) will be rung half muffled on Holy Trinity's bells to commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War. The ringing will commence at 7pm.

Following the quarter peal,  general ringing will continue half muffled until 9pm. as a mark of respect to all those who died in the conflict          of 1914/1918, and in other conflicts since.

HISTORY was made on Saturday (August 26) when bells rang out from Bodelwyddan's Marble Church for three hours as part of a 'full peal marathon'.

Bell-ringers at the church, equipped with with stamina, focus and experience, attempted a full peal of Bob Triples (5,040 changes).

The last recorded full peal at St Margaret's Church in Bodelwyddan took place 70 years ago in June 1953 on the coronation of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

This was the 11th peal in the history of the church and the attempt was hailed successful.
