Anyone know what happened to the Modell family? Mr Modell was the Rabbi at the synagogue in Church Walks in the 50's. Susan attended St. George's School. I think they moved to Bristol but it's a vague memory
-
Sorry cant help, it was before my time I was in St Georges in the 60s ....
-
I believe this was the synagogue. It's now used as a retreat centre.
-
Trojan - your belief is correct, it was indeed the Synagog! Shalom! :Sisyphus:
(NB to Ian - Can we have a Star of David smiley please?)

Miss Heaton
I have had a request about an elderly lady known only as Miss Heaton at this stage, but who is believed to live in Llandudno. Her late brother returned from Zimbabwe about 10 years ago and he possibly had some connection with bell ringing there.
If anyone can help, I shall be grateful as this enquiry is related to the forthcoming 50th anniversary of the Zimbabwe Guild of Church Bell Ringers to be held in Reading. Ringing is not possible at Harare Cathedral because the ringers there have been locked out of their tower for more than two years now.

I've been contacted by someone whose Father was a member of Waldini's band at Happy Valley and they were wondering if there was any footage of them performing available anywhere? I couldn't think of any or even of many still photos, to be honest. If anyone knows different, please let us know. $thanx$

Well done for finding them, I will add the two photos into the Forum Gallery with the necessary attribution.

One of my great grand parents lived in a house named Grassendale in Mostyn Avenue, Llandudno. I have walked up and down the street but cannot see it anywhere. Can anyone help in locating it please, even if it has had a name change. Thank you.
-
Orme Vixen, the Conwy Archives in Lloyd Street has Street indexes for many years going back to 1911 and these Street indexes also list People's names alphabetically in them. If you look for the names of either one of your G G Grandparents it might tell you where they lived. Alternatively look at the houses in Mostyn Avenue and see if you can see the name Grassingdale and that will give you the location.
Suepp has a 1929 Street Index and she has been great in locating info quickly so perhaps she may be able to find something for you. I'm hoping to be in Llandudno tomorrow so I'll have a look for you if you haven't had the answer already.
-
Orme Vixen, Grassendale was number 50 Mostyn Avenue in 1929, the home of R.C.Baxter, Draper. Looking at Google earth it seems to have been converted into flats, and where the front door was is now a window.
-
That was quick Suepp.

Very quick service, thank you very much. $thanx$

Welcome to the forum Orme Vixen. :)

Thank you Trojan

I now keep my directory open by the side of my keyboard Hugo, it's starting to look a little bedraggled!
-
Its nasty to have a bedraggled directory Suepp, I'm told the Brazilians have the answer.

Anyone remember "Paddy" who used to ealk up and down the pier carrying a large basket with seafood for sale in it c. 70's
-
Llecwedd, I vaguely remember him but I was very young. When I was a bit older (early 80s) there was a chap going round the pubs with a similar basket selling cockles, mussels, prawns etc.
Could it have been the same person?
-
I remember a "Paddy" - mid 70's early 80's. Slim build, brown hair, thin face with a boxers' nose. He'd often wear brown trousers with a red bomber jacket.
-
Yes that's him although I don't remember the bomber jacket. he was short, weather beaten.

I think the jacket was from Horesh.
I'm not sure what became of him - maybe he went "back home".
-
Horesh! Gosh that takes me back. My brother's favourite shop - Ben Sherman etc.

I used to be an aquaintance of the man who owned the name of Brutus Jeans... Mr Ernie Sheldon.
Ernie could put his beer away, and he knew how to protect his brand.. A good guy.
I bet he (or his family) still own the rights to Brutus.

Hi
Could someone please help me. I need a contact no or email for Chris Drayer as I wish to ask him if he would be willing to research the history of our house as we have recently moved to the area. Many Thanks and Best Wishes. Paul
-
Is that Chris Drayer or the local historian and author, Chris Draper?
-
Chris Draper the author and historian lives in Penrhyn Bay and there is a C Draper from Penrhyn Bay in the phone book.
I can't confirm that this is the same person but you could try phoning that number and find out.
-
Hugo, that is exactly what I thought but one would have expected pboulton to have first checked the BT phonebook before posting on here.
That is why I think it is C Drayer being sought.
-
Perhaps Paul will confirm the correct surname and then we may be able to get the info for him.
-
As this thread is entitled "Chris DRAPER" right from the original post, I think the first poster must have made a typing error---he got it right the first time.
-
As risk of sounding like a football chant...there's only onnnnnne Chris Draper!

Hi, Does anyone know how to get in touch with Terry Taylor, he was a photographer in Craig-y-don
in the late 70's, his shop was on Clarence road if i remember correctly. I'm trying to get a copy of my wedding photo but nobody will do it as Terry has his copyright stamp on the back of them. Hope somebody can help.!!!!!!
-
Hia Joness62 could you scan the photo?

The NWWN might do it, they allegedly don't seem to worry about copyright ;D (only joking, I would scan it for personal use only)
-
I don't know if this is the same one but I did a google search and it came up with,
Terance Taylor 01492 876263 21 Clarence Road
and
Martin Taylor 01492 544302 1 Marine Terrace Penrhyn Bay
(both photographers)
-
As a last resort, you can always call into the North Wales Badminton Centre in Deganwy one evening to make enquiries as I believe Terry is still involved in that sport as he has been for many decades.

Indeed. If you paid for the photos, you're entitled to make copies of them for your own use. Why would a wedding photographer wish to retain the copyright anyway, no-one would be interested in them apart from family surely?

I have received information from on high!! (well, from three doors up the street)
He who knows ALL things and ALL People in Llandudno, says...
Make your way to Molly's Cafe (by The Train Station) at 8am each day, and you will find Terry Taylor!
-
Thank you everbody for your reply's, it looks like i'm off to play badminton then to the cafe for breakfast but will try the phone number as well, Thanks again.

Good Morning,
This is a bit of a long shot!
I am researching the history of a Mini Cooper S. It was first registered in 1969 to a Richard Sutton of Llandudno.
Does anyone know him?
Kind Regards
Nigel
-
Hi Nigel,
There used to be a Mini club locally called Welsh Rarebits-- we were members when we still had Classic Minis. There are still Minis in the area with the logo on the windscreen---perhaps you could find a member who knew Richard Sutton through them. That is if the club is still active.
Good Luck

Richard Sutton/sooty lives on the estate at the back of the links on conway road,if you approach from deganwy side and turn left onto the estate from conway road,he lives in the second or third house on the left. i believe Richy is the designated historian for this site
-
Many thanks for the information.
I will follow up the mini car club and see if anyone knows him.
I'm afraid I live in Devon, so it will be a bit difficult to pop round to Conway Rd! So if anyone is going that way could you see if he lives where Dwyforite says?
I've spent the last 6 months rebuilding the Cooper S and recon I have another 4 months to go.
Richard Sutton bought the car on 1/8/1969 then sold it to Stella? Anne Morris of Conway Rd Llandudno in the early '70s. She then sold it to David Jones of Mill Drive Colwyn Bay on the 1/2/1977. The car then moved in 1980 to Rhosneigr.
Any way many thanks again for the leads.
Regards
Nigel

Lon Gwalia. That's where I grew up.
Karen.

Many thanks to you all. Richard has been in touch!
He was the owner of the mini, which is great. He is sending me information regarding its history.
Again thank you.
Kind regards

Hi I am new.
I am wondering if anyone has some old photos of dyffryn road school pupils during the early 1940,s
My mum lived in kings road llandudno and she has no childhood photos her name is Laura Massey nee Thomas . I would be great full if anyone remembers her and has any photo,s as she now has dementia so doesn't remember what happened 5 mins ago but remembers her childhood clearly. I would really like to be able to show her some photos as I now she would enjoy a good chat about who she knew .
Any Info would be great.
Cheryl
-
Welcome Cheryl.
I am sorry to hear about your Mum.
This photo is not quite 1940 but Mum may recognise some of the boys who were born around that year.
.
-
Thanks for the photo I will try and print it off to show her. Màny thanks
-
Please do.
I have some names to help if Mum is stuck.

???Hi Bri.
Tantilising. I know John Holmes, John Pritchard, and one of the Roberts brothers. The rest are also my generation and I recognise some faces and should know them but they have fallen through the holes in my brain! I don't know the strip either.
Can you help pleeeease?
:-X Mike.
-
Mike, I thought you may have got Archie Kipling and Colin Mullin?
The full team in no particular order is:
John Holmes, John Pritchard, Archie Kipling, Colin Mullin, P Owen, D Brookes, M Jones, J Stockton, E Hughes, J Pritchard and L Henson.
P.S. - That was your first post, Mike, for six months. Have you been poorly?
-
Hi Bri.
Missed Archie because I was looking for Tommy and Woggsy (Collin Mullen) because I would have been looking for Gary. Which dates me as one or two years older than most of those there. I wouldn't have recognised Les although the Henson twins were a regular part of our Kings Road/Dyffryn Road gang. John Holmes was frequently with us although Marie was nearer my age.
A few years ago when we were home on holiday I managed to get into the archives in the old Lloyd Street School. I had a look at the old school registers for my time in Dyffryn Road (and a spell in Lloyd Street). I was amazed and ashamed at how many names I had completely forgotten. I could have spent the whole holiday there! I did promise myself more research there sometime to build a social history of the West Shore Council Houses but so far it's gone the way of many similar promises.
Thanks for your concern but I have been peeking from time to time and generally, I'm fine and have been very busy with voluntary work campaigning for disability rights. I've seen some interesting topics and lovely photos but mainly they're outside my experience.
Mike. $walesflag$

It is good to hear you are keeping well.
-
Does anyone remember Miss Williams who was an infant teacher at Ysgol Morfa Rhianedd in late 1960s or early 1970s? I have very fond memories of her.
-
Does anyone know where it was Carmen Sylva stayed when she visited Llandudno? Internet searchs drawing blank ... :(
-
She stayed at the Marine Hotel.
-
Thanks Dave!
(What a woman. And what a life! - 'hardd, hafan, hedd' indeed! $walesflag$)

Some time ago one of your members said they had had the good fortune to buy a cine tape at a boot sale including Waldini Gypsy band in 1956.
I'm married to Maureen Evans and would love to get a copy.
(I have a video of a reunion which included a number of band members --- which I would happily make available)
Have you got that 1956 cine? Or any other relevant film for 1955,1956 or 1957?
Please help
Roy

I may be able to put you in touch with Craig Ollerton, if you wish.

Hi people, do any of you people remember the bailey family frin the orme.
And reg bailey who was a boat builder/ joiner
-
There is a Reg Bailey living at Bishops Gate, block of Flats at the West end of the Oval llandudno, he has a daughter Mandy, who is/was a seamstress, who lived in a Flat in Madoc St. a few years ago. Hope this helps. ££$

I have found out that my Great Grandmother Elizabeth Cartwright had a boarding house in Clifton Road in 1911, the family lived at Mount Haled, Clifton Road also her son and daughter in law Eddie and Victoria Cartwright had a boarding house in the same street named Glen Dale. I have recently been in Llandudno and found the street but now the houses as they are numbered. Can anyone help me identify the numbers of the houses.
Many thanks
-
My G Grandparents also lived in Clifton Road and many of the houses there have also been renamed over the years. At the end of Clifton Road is the old Lloyd Street School and that now houses the Conwy Archives,
In the Archives are Street Indexes and these may help. The ones they have that may help to trace your relatives old houses are the ones for 1911, 1914, 1922, 1926 and 1929. These Indexes list the name of the "breadwinner" and will be easy to find.
I'll have a look for you when I next visit the place, unless someone on here can help you beforehand.
The Archives are open Mon - Thurs so it will be next week before I can go there.
-
Put Glendale Clifton Road Llandudno into Google and it comes up as No 25 and also No 26 and then you can do Google Street view and see which is correct
Nothing appeared for Mount Halen when I tried that so I'll look it up next week
-
Mount Haled (not Halen) is 40 Clifton Road and Glendale is 26.
-
Thanks Cambrian $good$
This is what the houses look like today. No 26 Glen Dale is the one with the pink painting on the outside and No 40 Mount Haled is the other one at the end of the terrace. The name Mount Haled is on the glass above the main door but is hard to make out in the photo and the house has now been converted into flats.

Does anyone remember the cobbler at Tan Wal in Penrhynside? My Mother used to go there when I was a kid in the early '50s. I used to love going there because the whole shop smelled of leather - one of those never-to-be-forgotten smells of childhood! He seemed awfully old to me as a small child, but I doubt he was much over 40 or 50.....
I can't remember his name but hopefully someone out there might!
-
I don't know much about Penrhynside but one of my walking books by Christopher Draper goes on to say this
" Tan Y Wal is another cottage with 18th Century origins. At one time this was the home of Huw Hughes, the village cobbler. He was notorious for his habit of chewing tobacco, and waiting customers had to be alert so as to avoid the soggy projectiles of ejected tobacco"
Whether this is the person you are remembering, I don't know.
-
I think he would have been fairly old to a child in the 1950s! The cobbler was Hugh Hughes who died in 1963 at the age of 84.
There was another cobbler at "Sea View", Pendre Road, called John Jones who he died around 1945.
-
Well, I was 7 years old when I left Penrhynside for that huge metropolis down the road - Llandudno, so that would have been 9 or 10 years before he died, so he would indeed have seemed quite ancient to me at the time!
I don't remember the spitting though! I would have been quite shocked! :o
But I do know Sea View on Pendre Road very well! ;D
-
Spent many holidays at Tan Y Wal from the late 1940s until about 1960.
At that time my Nain was housekeeper for Uncle Huw the cobbler. After becoming ill she then came to stay with us in Liverpool.
Remember I used to spend a lot of time going around with Ivor Shields who lived on Mount Pleasant and we we spent many days at Lido swimming pool Deganwy and Rhos on sea pool.
Anyone on here remember Ivor Shields ? He was the same age as me born either the day before or after me.
-
That's a name from the past! I went to John Bright Grammar School and I can vaguely remember that name from somewhere. If he's the person I'm thinking of he would be about 69 or 70 now. I didn't know him personally so have never had any contact with him either.
-
Another blast from the past.
Remember Ivor and I going to watch Dam Busters film, ( Released in 1955 ) on a very warm night.
Film was on at the Palladium and we watched it from the "gods".
When we came out can remember talking to the crew on a Toastrack waiting for another tram coming off the Mostyn Street single line. Still light so must have been July/August time.
After getting off the tram at Penrhynside went for Chips from the Fish and Chip shop opposite the Cross Keys.
-
I remember Ivor well. He was a lot older than me; he lived next door to us in Mt Pleasant. His parents were Walter and Edie. He was a nice lad! $good$
-
Mull, you sound as if you knew Huw the cobbler quite well. Did he live or have his shop (or both?) up the laneway off Bryn Gwynt Lane? I remember going there many times but I can't find it on Google maps and it looks as if all that area has been built over. In fact some of the houses there look very "South of France" posh!! 8)
Did you by any chance remember Brian Tench from further up Mt Pleasant (#8 or #10, I think!) I used to do shopping for his Mum.
-
I am away in North Yorkshire at the moment staying with my son.
Will be back on Mull either late Sunday or Monday.
Will put a bit more on the site then.
Remember Ivors sister winning a beauty contest at the Deganwy lido. That would have been mid 1950s.
Would like to know if Ivor is still around.
