Title: 1911 census
Post by: Llechwedd on May 31, 2011, 12:14:19 pm
Can't find Grand Hotel or Happy Valley Road on the 1911 census. I think my Grand Mother worked there and can't find her by name so thought I'd look at staff/residents list but it doesn'tseem to exist.  Any ideas please?

Try looking for it on the  Promenade as in the  1929 directory the Grand is listed on the Promenade, i.e.  "left side from Happy Valley" and is second on the list after the Llandudno Pier Co.

Thanks Suepp I'll have a go.  Looked for Grand Hotel and Happy Valley Road and neither listed but I'll have a trawl as you suggest,.

No it doesn't work and I can't find the Craigside Hydro either, how strange.  They were both huge.

It could be part of North Parade if the other roads aren't listed, can I ask which website you are using for your research?

On one website, showing the Census summary books, gives a Mr Eschbacher as the occupier, Grand Hotel - 26 males, 19 females. The next listed schedules are Pier Pavillion, then The Olives, North Parade. No names on this site, so I tried a search on another site, but can't find it on that one - not even with an unusual name like that.

Hope this may help... !

with this information you could buy some credits on findmypast and this will give you the full listing for Mr Eschbacher.

I've been looking on Find my past as I don't like Ancestry.  How did you find them Jemima?

Just logged onto Ancestry, they now have the 1911 census on as images, no search facility yet but  all entries can be "browsed"

I found it the hard way... and with a bit of luck too!
On home page of Ancestry...View new images, click on Wales 1911 census.
Choose county - Caernarvonshire,Civil parish Llandudno cu, Eglwysrhos.
Enumeration district 2 - and the entries are on pages 2 4 and 6

yes not too bad if you have a rough idea of the layout of the streets and take a wild guess!
