Future coastal protection works in Llandudno will not prevent a sandy beach returning to the town's north shore, a senior council officer has said. Speaking at an economy and place overview and scrutiny committee, Owen Conry promised councillors that Conwy's flood defence team would work towards ensuring a sandy beach remained an option for the north shore.

The discussions were part of a bi-annual overview of the county's coastal and fluvial flood risk reduction schemes. Mr Conry, Conwy's interim flood risk and infrastructure manager, was asked by Llandudno councillor Thomas Montgomery for assurances that future planned coastal defence work would not damage plans for a sandy beach.

'Right ingredients' as the town of Llandudno shows its resilience

The tourism sector in North Wales has endured a roller-coaster ride over the last few years - from lockdowns to booming summers. It has then been affected by the cost of living crisis while visitor bosses have accused Welsh Government of being "anti-tourist" with its crackdown on second homes and a proposed tourism tax.

But the most popular resort in the region, Llandudno, has shown its resilience and also moved from being "just a resort" - bringing in other employment and also maintaining a strong retail sector despite the many headwinds. It has seen brands like Loungers open there with enormous success while Boots Hearingcare moved their training academy from England to the town centre.

There are more positives going forward. LVL 5 Gyms are opening up in units next to the new Premier Inn - taking up space that had been empty since the Tudno Castle redevelopment was completed.

Crowds line streets for Llandudno Christmas Parade 2023!

LLANDUDNO sparkled in all its festive glory during its annual Christmas parade.

Crowds of people lined the streets for the parade that departed Llandudno Railway Station at 4pm on Saturday (December 2).

The annual procession, organised by Llandudno Town Council, made its way along Vaughan Street, Mostyn Street, past the Town Hall in Lloyd Street, down Madoc Street before returning to the Station.

On Saturday afternoon I briefly went into town (Llandudno) and a few vehicles ahead of me was a low loader carrying an old Llandudno tram - still with the Catrin Follies banner on it.  I'm surprised not to have seen any pics of it on any local facebook page, so wonder what was it doing, where was it going - are they going to resurrect the trams - ideal for 20mph!

The Oxford House Clinic site, at Oxford Road, is for sale with estate agent St David?s Commercial for a freehold price of ?535,000.

The site was established in 2000, and offers sports therapy, acupuncture therapy and a range of other services.

Built in 1880, the building is described as being in an ?improving? area of the town, close to Asda and the police station.

Extending to some 5,000 square feet, the premises is made up of three floors, including a gym room, treatment space, and a residential flat complete with study.

The estate agent said of the listing: ?Rare clinic and health centre situated in the centre of Llandudno and adjacent to Asda and police station. Situated in an improving mixed use area.

AN ART gallery will be opening at the site of a former tourism hub in Llandudno town centre.

Ffin y Parc Gallery, which is currently based at Betws Road, Llanrwst, will be making the move to Trinity Square, with an opening slated for St David?s Day, March 1, 2024.

The gallery is owned by Ralph Sanders and Roland Powell, who established it in 2010 and have overseen its transformation into the biggest commercial art gallery in Wales.

The new Ffin y Parc will showcase the best of Welsh art, and will present the work of up to 40 artists, all Wales-based or Welsh-influenced, with a ?mixed collection? of up-and-coming artists and more established ones.

A NEW gym and bar complex in Llandudno celebrated its soft opening to the public today (December 9).

LVL 5 Gyms Ltd, owned by Sion Pritchard and Rich Blake, hosted an open day at the former Tudno Castle hotel site at Conway Road.

The new gym is made up of a caf? and bar space, a sizeable weights and cardio room, a room geared to specific sessions, and changing rooms complete with saunas.

There will also be a wet room for disabled customers, which is due to be completed soon.

Llandudno is gearing up for a four-night late night shopping event this week.

It will also include a Christmas window and frontage competition, and a Christmas trail around the businesses taking part.

There will be a free draw with prizes worth over ?800 for completed trails, where stamps have been collected from 20 businesses or more.

Trail maps are now available to pick up for free from all premises taking part.

Friends of Mostyn Street began in May this year and are now organising Merry Mostyn Street, a town-wide Christmas trail and late-night shopping event running from December 13-16 showcasing

generous offers from local and national businesses alike.

There will be live music on Thursday night (December 14) at the Mostyn Art Gallery, and free crafting and stories for children at Llandudno Library while parents are welcome to have free hot chocolate, tea or coffee.

THE SITE of a former luxury jewellery and watch store in Llandudno has been snapped up, three years after the business closed.

The building that was once home to Gimberts, at 94 Mostyn Street, had been on the market with estate agents St David?s Commercial for ?285,000.

Gimberts had traded in the resort town for more than 40 years until its abrupt closure in 2020, having failed to reopen after the New Year break, and with no message to customers.

Once stocked with luxury jewellery and watches, and well-known for its fine china, the site has lay empty since but the sign remains.

The property has been described as in a ?prime? location by the estate agent, who said it had been bought by a property company who would renovate the site.

The building is made up of three floors, with additional basement storage, which can be used for retail, offices and accommodation.

St David's Commercial said of the sale: "At last, new owners will renovate and continue to improve the fabulous listed building Llandudno has to offer.    pioneer

THE OWNERS of a shop in Llandudno town centre have announced their intention to close in the new year.

Happily Ever After, on Mostyn Street, opened in October 2020 and is owned by husband and wife Jake and Amy Bailey, who moved to the area from Staffordshire to set up the store.

The couple, who have a child, previously sold their home in order to keep the store going during the cost-of-living crisis.

The business bounced back thanks to an innovative shelf renting idea, whereby other local businesses and craftspeople would rent space on the shop floor to sell their own products.

However, the owners have now confirmed the site will be going up for let in January, with the couple to pursue other business interests online.

CONWY'S planning committee backed plans to transform Llandudno?s former Marks & Spencer building into a three-floor mixed-use leisure hub ? but there were concerns raised about what could go there.

Llandudno landowner Mostyn Estates were granted permission for the building?s use to be changed from retail and ancillary to a mixed-use building comprising a mix of retail, food and beverage, and indoor leisure.

The change of use will allow Mostyn Estates to market the future use of the building more widely.

But a planning report revealed that footfall in the town centre had dropped significantly since M&S had left Mostyn Street.

Since M&S moved to Parc Llandudno in March 2022, the nearby multistorey car park had seen a 40% decline in the number of cars parked.

Data from people counters on Mostyn Street also confirmed a reduction in footfall since M&S relocated.

Cllr Antony Bertola proposed councillors voted in favour of the change of use, which was seconded by Cllr Chris Cater.
