Title: Llandudno Fireworks display
Post by: DaveR on November 05, 2010, 07:05:59 pm
So I thought, given the rubbish weather today, I would look on the Town Council's website to see if the Display is still going ahead...what do I see...

Well at least they have achieved something for 30 minutes of the year - all they need to do now is be as  productive for the next 364 days, 23 hours and 30 minutes.   L0L   ZXZ

Oh, of course, I've just remembered - they didn't actually DO anything.   They paid someone else to do it - all they did was write the cheque!    _))*   >>>

That was the time when we actually had a bonfire on West Shore.  But that was until Health and Safety and Risk Assessment came on the scene!     :'(  :'(  :'(

I saw some of it from the Church tower and it looked pretty good to me. So good we rang the bells to accompany the bangs and celebrate the event taking place at the first attempt this year.

I liked the idea that they were making a real effort, by accompanying the display with music.  Mind you, having listened to their third rendition of 'Ride of the Valkyries', I did wonder if they could have perhaps used a bit more imagination :-)) Full marks to the actual display, however.

Title: November the 5th
Post by: Dave on November 03, 2012, 05:07:36 pm
The weather forecast for next Monday is looking good although the wind might be a bit strong blowing off the sea on to the shore but hopefully the organised event in Llandudno will not suffer.

Talking of this event though, isn't it time that the public access to fireworks through supermarkets etc should be stopped. I see no reason whatsoever to make them available as they just add unnecessary risk, noise and rubbish to the local community.
Whilst on the subject what about public bonfires ? Occasionally you hear of tragic accidents as a result of bonfires and it's not surprising when unscrupulous local tradesmen and others use bonfires as an opportunity to dump all sorts of unwanted items.
One such trader was getting rid of his rubbish at the Pentywyn rd bonfire site this afternoon. To protect his identity the detail on his van has been removed as I couldn't see what he was dumping but it's obvious that others couldn't care less. I pity the residents who suffer the toxic fumes and the remaining eyesore the following day.

Ironic that there are people out there stealing metal !
But plastics are just toxic rubbish. Who knows what's in the bin bags.

In fairness, on checking, the person who's van was in the photo lives very close  to the scene. Had he come from further afield I might have been inclined to think he was a serial fly tipper.

So now it's OK to toss out stuff that will cause toxic fumes, or stuff that won't burn and will have to be cleared (no doubt by the Council) after the event?

There is  perfectly good Civic Amenity site in the area where this could have been got rid of.   >>>

The point was made that the person in the photo was not the one who had dumped any of the obviously unsuitable bonfire material. He might have added more, he might not, but as I couldn't see what he left it has to be innocent until proven guilty.

For once you have to give credit to the town council, this is the only thing they get right, good display with thousands of the town folk on the prom,so whoever they get to do it for them well done and if all the councillors could just return to the prom in the daylight when the tide is out and you might just see what some of us are winging at.

Best remember, Wrex, that all the Council do is use our money to pay for it.  The actual job of arranging the display and putting match to the touch paper is contracted out.

In Llandudno, you will get a wonderful view from anywhere along the Promenade so I suggest you park somewhere where you can make a quick getaway when the firework display ends before 8pm and thus beat the inevitable traffic queues.

The cost of 30 minutes of pyrotechnics would fund a half reasonable set of Xmas lights for the Town Centre that would create a much longer season for the shopkeepers and hotels.   :D

They would also last much longer than half an hour.  Add the same amount year on year and Blackpool would soon have some serious competition.   L0L

Wasnt overly impressed to be honest being a bit of a firework fiend.  Ive been to many displays around the country and obviously fireworks championships etc so I know im a bit spoilt.  It was umm dull.  No music and I know it was cold and a bit rainy but I didnt really rate them.
Eirias park on the other hand - now that was a show.   Very good indeed and still cold and rainy but so much better atmosphere and display.

I don't think it's unreasonable for a town the size of Llandudno to have BOTH a decent fireworks display and a decent Christmas Lights display? Surely?

I was hoping to find some information about how much had been allocated towards Christmas Lights this year in the Agendas/Minutes section of their website but no-one has bothered to update it:
http://www.llandudno.gov.uk/council-agendas-minutes.html (http://www.llandudno.gov.uk/council-agendas-minutes.html)

Is it really that difficult to upload a few PDFs to the website? There are three members of staff employed by the Council, after all.

Apparently, the date was chosen in concert with the Town's hoteliers so that they could offer a week-end break with a fireworks display in their promotional literature.  So it was a bit of a kow-tow to the B & B Brigade and b****r everybody else.     >>>

You are quite right, good displays do not have to cost the Earth it just calls for plenty of forward planning, maybe over a few years, and some selective buying.  All too often Councils and the like go out to tender and just get ripped off.  A good contract negotiator is required to ensure the best is bought for the cash available.  It is amazing what some sales people can get, and how the buyer is ripped off, with just the odd lunch!

The web site has never been much good.  Too much rubbish and not enough information on all that matters to the electorate.  I would have thought that there could be a Minutes page at least!   Many other local councils throughout the country leave Llandudno standing.

Get rid of the "old brigade" and put some new bright youngsters in their place.  :D

Not so long ago the Council only had two full time staff, and that was before it was fully computerised!  And don't forget the Mayor's Sergeant...!   _))*

Rain isn't the problem;  the wind is, and that seems to have declined.  Because it's a front coming through the mass of rain absorbs the energy of the wind, so the display could well go ahead.  Or not...

Watched the display from the pathway to the Cable Car station, just by the steps.

Last year there were hundreds there, this year only about half a dozen.

Weather wasn't too bad, but it certainly deterred quite a few people from attending. A fantastic display, as usual. A small fire broke out on the Pier at one point, which had to be quickly extinguished once the display ended.

I too thought it was a small fire, but from a higher vantage point, the angle I had made it look more like one of the firework pots had kept on burning.  But they are on fireproof mats so no panic, I noticed that the attendants were in no great rush to extinguish it, but they did after a couple of minutes.

Having said that, I couldn't enjoy most of the display, for fear of watching my kiosk (and others) getting showered in fiery sparks all the time!   Nerve wracking stuff.

Very enjoyable, and just had a message from some one who came all the way from Penrhyndeaudraeth and thoroughly enjoyed them too.

......... IF however, there WAS a small fire following the fireworks display, then that must be the LAST time it is ever held there.

Just look at how many British piers have been lost to fires, why on Earth would anyone take such risks?

WATCH: Spectacular firework display in Llandudno 2014

Hundreds...?   turned out for the fireworks display in Llandudno on Saturday evening.
Visitors were not disappointed with the stunning display with the great backdrop of the town’s pier.

We have a great vantage point from our garden but I'm afraid the weather kept us indoors so we missed them. A great shame it turned out the way it did but I guess that there was a commitment to go ahead despite the wind and rain , presumably as I was told they had been advertised on TV . Just goes to show some folk travelling for miles and I didn't even know they were on last Saturday until a day or two before ! Once again the publicity machine doesn't seem to connect with me !!!

Llandudno firework display which attracted 17,000 people last year could be last unless financial support is found.

LLANDUDNO town council is staying on trend and will again host its firework display in October - but fears have been raised it may be the last.

The display will be held on Wednesday, October 30 at 6.10pm - before Halloween and Bonfire night - on Llandudno North Shore beach.

In 2018, the event also took place towards the end of October.

Cllr Ian Turner, vice-chair of the Councils Fireworks Committee, said health and safety and risk assessments have been increased this year and in turn - have brought with them increased costs.
