This newspaper cutting from the sixties?, shows Miss Una Hack being presented a Hotpoint Supermatic Washing machine, which she helped to make, by Mr Derek Pritchard chairman of the A.E.I. Ex-servicemen's Association. Also in the picture are Mr. J. A Berry general manager of the Dolgarrog Aluminium Corporation, Mr T. G. Wrighton A.E.I.-Hotpoint works manager and Mr L. Wells personnel manager & secretary of the Ex-servicemen's Association.

I believe the Supermatic Twin Tub was launched in the early 1960's. The dryer looks tiny - just about fit a pair of socks and underwear in that thing.

The other article referring to Alun Jones being drunk in charge of a pedal cycle made me laugh. :cyclist40:

My Mum was convinced by the local electrical shop to trial an Hoovermatic Twin tub whilst her washing machine with hand wringer was away for service. She thought it very nice but decided against splashing out on the new technology. Cheeky salesman had been so convinced she'd buy one he'd already sold hers so she bought one after all.
Hoover must have pioneered the concept as this was in the late 50's if I remember correctly.

This is most probably Summer, 1963 as the little article in the corner mentions a man from Ffordd Morfa being done for riding a bike under the influence. He states that he had been to the Eisteddfod and had a few and then attempted to cycle home. The eisteddfod was held in Llandudno in 1963 (Llanelli the year before and Swansea the year after).
-
Our household had a machine similar to this Hotpoint Empress when I was young.
The mangle was removed in the '70's when my Mother progressed to a Frigidaire spin dryer.

Unless he rode his bike from Llanelli to Llandudno Ian. 8)
Seriously, I believe you could be right. :)

I cannot believe he got drunk at the National Eisteddfod in 1963 as the event was teetotal.

He had been to the Eisteddfod Bri, then met a friend and had got drunk. Probably in a pub/pubs around town.
He should have taken lessons from Ronnie Atherton Snr (RIP).
He could drink 18 pints and still ride a bike in a straight line. $00$

Betty Cox, I wonder if it's the same Mrs Cox that lived in Council Street in the 1970's when she was married with children?
Her face is the spit of what could be her siblings, Michael, Doreen, etc. (just trying to remember the others)
-
Is that you also in the photo, BrianP?
-
Yes, thats me
-
I also recognise Huggins as he played later with me in the Maggie Murphy's football team during the early seventies.
I seem to remember you have a twin brother.
Welcome to the forum.
Perhaps, we should have our own section for Deganwy. D)
-
If Huggins is Alan Hughes, then I will point out that his father Tom Hughes is in the Topic newspaper cutting, behind the trophy.
Yes I am a twin
-
Yes, here is Huggins (and me) a few years later, BrianP, with a few more of your former neighbours.

I guess you must have quite a collection of Hotpoint memorabilia with your father being so involved during that period.
-
Bri, what a fine looking team you were! :)
Brian P, your collection does seem to contain quite a number of very attractive young ladies! :) It's all very interesting.

The Betty Cox in the above photo was my aunty Betty (Elizabeth). She was the daughter of James (Jim) & Jane Cox (nee Evans) from the Penmaen Road in the Morfa, Conwy. Betty later married Ken Barr and they lived on Sychnant Pass. Sadly she died in 1975 aged just 40, and is buried in St Agnes Cemetery.
Trojan - Her siblings are Victor, Tony, John, Peter, Malcolm & Patricia.
-
$good$ Hi Paula.
Yes. Betty was my cousin. She was a beautiful young woman with a sparkling personality and a lovely temperament. My Uncle Jim, Betty's father was warm and generous, pretty much the opposite to his brother, my Dad Johnny Cox - the black sheep.
Heddwch.
Mike.

Hi Mike
My dad is with me reading your reply. Your comments made him laugh! _))*

-
I know that field well from my days playing football for Maggie Murphy in the early seventies on a Sunday.
I am surprised Hotpoint used that field for their Sports Day, Brian, when they had their own field and club just further down the road.
-
The sports field for Woodlands School was used before the Hotpoint social club opened further along on Victoria Road.
-
Do you know which year Hotpoint opened up their social club in Victoria Drive?
Did your family used to live over the road to Huggins whose father also used to work in Hotpoint?
-
That looks very much like my uncle Billy Warlow Jones in the middle of the last photograph and cousins Ken (Rimmer) Hughes and Denise Wrench later to become Ken's wife, on the left.
I loved the Hotpoint sports days and Christmas parties, Happy days.
-
Hi Bri,
I don't know when the Social Club opened, but can only guess around 1962/3. My father Derek Pritchard was a member of the Hotpiont Cricket team, and he used to look after the cricket pitch. I can remember him driving an old grey tractor, pulling a rig with rotating blades to cut the grass. The tractor was stored in a shed at the back of the changing rooms.
My twin brother and I lived in Heulfryn on the corner at no. 17, over the road from Alan Hughes.

Hi Brian. I do remember you and your brother.
I don't know if you are aware but there is a gentleman living locally who used to be a manager at Hotpoint in the Junction.
He has researched the history of the Junction factory and often puts on a slide show presentation to local groups.
I am sure he would be very interested in meeting up with you, if you still live locally.
Please let me know if you are interested.
-
Roy Mills is the chap's name who does the history slide show - I worked with him in Design department, both at the Junction and later in Bodelwyddan. Well researched presentation.
-
Hi Bri,
Glad to hear that someone is keeping the history of Hotpoint alive. I moved away over thirty years ago, and until last year was a regular visitor to my old home town.
