Charities are reporting heightened concern among pensioners who fear being dragged into paying income tax.

The state pension rose by 8.5% in early April, but the knock on effect is that hundreds of thousands of pensioners on lower incomes have been drawn into paying income tax.

Most pensioners will pay more tax this year as a result, owing to frozen tax thresholds.

Age Concern and Independent Age both say they have seen an increase in calls to their helplines in recent weeks from pensioners confused about the issue.

Sport / Cambrian Rally 2024: Competitors rev up for a challenge!

A LONGER route, reduced road mileage, and exceptional gravel stages, including one of 16 miles, hold promise for a challenging Visit Conwy Cambrian Rally in the autumn.

Organisers North Wales Car Club say the route is set to be one of the toughest, yet most compact in recent years, with a ratio of two to one road miles versus stage miles.

Discussion are at an advanced stage with Natural Resources Wales to secure stage mileage of 55 to 60 miles.

?The stages will be contained in a compact area and we are hoping to finalise discussion soon to use Elsi for a single run, plus stages in the Clocaenog complex, and at Alwen and Brenig,? said Alyn Edwards, the event?s route consultant.

As in previous years there will be a high profile start and finish on the promenade in Llandudno.

The event is pleased to be a round of the Probite British Rally Championship, the Protyre BTRDA Rally Series, the Motorsport UK Pirelli Welsh Championship, the TCS Paint Rally Challenge, the Mini Challenge, and the Association of North Western Car Clubs Championship.

For the first time, it?s also a round of the Stellantis Motorsport Rally Cup which is played out over events in Ireland and the UK.

Conwy County Borough Council and Llandudno Town Council both support the event.                  ref pioneer

THE first stage of the new UK-wide BoatLife Fishing Championship will be taking place at Conwy Marina on May 17-19.

Conwy has been selected as the first location for the national catch and release competition due to its ?rich sea fishing history and stunning coastal scenery?.

Known for its diverse range of fish species, the tidal patterns of the Conwy Estuary will give seasoned professionals entering the pro competition and weekend anglers in the privateers competition the chance to show off their skills as well as compete for trophies and great prizes.

THIS beautiful Rhododendron ?Penjerrick? is coming into flower along the recently restored Penjerrick Walk at Bodnant Garden.

The floral showstopper, at the National Trust historic garden and arboretum in the Conwy Valley, has large scented white, cream or pink flowers and a characteristic red-pink bark.

A spokesperson from Bodnant Garden told the Pioneer: "Rhododendron ?Penjerrick? was bred at Penjerrick Garden in Cornwall in 1923, a hybrid of R. campylocarpum Elatum Group and R. griffithianum. Henry McLaren described R. ?Penjerrick? as ?the most lovely of all rhododendrons? and planted a grove of them along a path on Furnace Hill.

RECAP: Welsh Government to make changes to 20mph zones

Ken Skates has said he will be looking to make a ?targeted change? to 20mph zones in Wales.
The Cabinet Secretary for North Wales and Transport, Ken Skates, will outline his transport priorities, including plans for 20 mph, in the Senedd today (April 23).
He said the Government will ?correct? its guidance around the introduction of 20mph speed limits in built-up areas.

Update

A spokesperson from the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire caused severe heat and smoke damage to a room on the lower ground floor, smoke damage to the shop above and light smoke damage to an empty building alongside.

"The cause of the fire is thought to be electrical."

Wales Air Ambulance to close helicopter bases in Caernarfon and Welshpool
Health board bosses have voted to replace them with a site near Rhuddlan

Health boards have given the green light to close two Wales Air Ambulance bases after 2026. The Welsh NHS ' Joint Commissioning Committee voted that the Welshpool and Caernarfon bases will shut.

The sites will be merged into a new site in North Wales - with a site identified around the Rhuddlan area. But more details will need to be provided about two potential Rapid Response vehicles (RRV) being put in the north west of Wales and potentially western Powys.

It?s shocking to see how they are neglecting the cemetery, last year walking through remembering friends I looked at the babies graves the grass was taller than the headstones 🥲.   Pats husband used to mow a lot of the gras in mums area. But he?s not got the mower anymore.

Llanrhos Lawn Cemetery , upsetting to see it in that state.

Last time we were there, pre Covid, a small china flower arrangement on my mother and fathers grave had been damaged by a strimmer, and we had to replace it. Due another visit also up the Orme hopefully later this year.
