Title: Ken Dodd
Post by: Ian on March 12, 2018, 08:48:29 am
Last of the Music Hall Greats - Ken Dodd - died today at the age of 90. An incredible performer whose shows became longer and longer as he became older and older.

For a bloke totally unconcerned about money, he had a lot, but never moved out of the house in which he was born.

"Fifty-five years in show business, ladies and gentlemen. That's a hell of a long time to wait for a laugh."

- "Tonight when you get home, put a handful of ice cubes down your wife's nightie and say: 'There's the chest freezer you always wanted'."

- "My act is very educational. I heard a man leaving the other night, saying: 'Well, that taught me a lesson'."

- "Love makes the world go round, or it does if you are a man over 50."

I'm sure Ken Dodd would have found the headline in today's Daily Post hilarious:

Comedy legend Sir Ken Dodd dies aged 90 - live updates

By marrying his partner of forty years a couple of days ago, Ken’s estate will manage to avoid paying any inheritance tax.

RIP Ken Dodd.

I’ll mourn the passing of a comic genius, and the end of the era which he represented.
But, I’m also slightly relieved that he can’t hurt me anymore...
The last time we saw him it was 5 and a half hours in total, my backside was killing me, my bladder was bursting..... but my ribs ached with all the laughing for days afterwards.

I heard a snippet of an old interview with Ken Dodd on Radio 4's Today programme yesterday morning...

Interviewer: I remember seeing you in a show at Blackpool 20 years ago.
Ken: You're not after a refund, are you?

Close on 20 years ago my daughter worked part-time, work experience, at Venue Cymru ... she was operating the spotlight high up at the back for the Ken Dodd show - had to keep it on him the whole time.  He would stand fairly still for some time then suddenly move to one side, to keep her on her toes!!!  It was after 2 in the morning when she eventually got home, and had school the following day!

Certainly one of the best comedians ever - today's lot cannot get anywhere near matching the quick-witted humour of Ken's generation.

RIP Ken.

That was a Lee Mack line in 'Kid', season one episode 5 of his Not Going Out sitcom.  Mack's said Dodd was one of his great comedy heroes.
