This could be the scene in a year or two if the Landing Stage can be repaired and those cruise liners start calling. I can see Fester rubbing his hands together already...

Totally captivating picture that Dave,

I've seen it before, (and it would sell very well as a print methinks !!)

I am always amazed at how casual those construction workers are,  what would H&S say about all this?

If you ever read 'The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists' by Robert Tressel, you will realise what their working conditions were like.

I wasn't being facetious Fester, just thought it an opportunity to point out what the Victorian workers had to endure to make a living.
Title: Re: Old Postcards - Llandudno Promenade & Pier
Post by: Fester on October 01, 2010, 12:50:51 am
Everything is relative to its time though Quiggs.

I mean, those who built The Grand, would count themselves incredibly lucky when compared to those who built, say, Conwy Castle.

Imagine having to WALK from Yorkshire in a February, to get to Wales by March ....(hoping your wife and kids might still be alive when (and if) you return home) .... hauling blocks of stone up ricketty scaffolding, all for fourpence a week.
Then having to walk all the way home in November without someone stealing your coins!

We have no idea, have we?   these days we face reduced pensions,  appraisals, and horror of horrors ...the coffee machine had no sugar in!

On the original it's possible to see the workers at the topmost level leaning casually against the spires and wearing ties, waistcoats and smoking pipes. The tradesmen always - it seems - wore ties and suits when working.

I was talking to Fester today and he told me that you could still see the remains of the original wooden piles of the original 1858 Pier. So, we had a look over the side and, sure enough, we found two remnants of the original pier piles, little more than stumps of wood now. Impressive to think that they've lasted all this time though.

Hi Trojan!  I notice that photo number 2 of the old penny, happens to be a ''Honolulu Penny'' - my old man, used to show them to me!

It was many years before I realised what he was saying.

The Trident the Queen was holding, was,  yes!

You've guessed it  - honolulu.

Welcome to the forum Don.....I'm glad the penny dropped.  ;D

Pennies had Brittania sitting on her throne on the 'tails' side of a penny, holding a trident in her left hand, (thats as in Neptune, not Triumph bikes), and a shield with the union jack on it down at her right side.

Now the position of the trident varied with different issues of the penny, with most, the end of the trident most definitely rested on the ground just in front of her.

With other issues the end of the trident rested on her..... er........well, 'honolulu'.

This is one of the clearest old photo of the Pavilion I have, click on it to see the full size version. Must have been taken prior to 1890 as the Pavilion still has its Glass Roof which was replaced by a zinc one in 1890, owing to the fact the glass one made the Pavilion too difficult to heat.

[smg id=847]

I also recently found out that, in 1969, the remains of the original swimming baths in the basement of the Pavilion were being removed to make way for a Ghost Train Ride - workmen uncovered a plaque marking the completion of work on the pier back in 1878, it read:

Engineers: James Brunlees C.E., Alexander MacKerrow C.E.,
Resident: H. Neal C.E.
1878
John Dixon C.E., London
Contractors

I wonder what happened to this plaque?

I remember it was a chilly evening and there was a frost in the air, however, even standing near the Ted-yr-Ogof memorial on the promenade, the heat from the fire was immense.

May Day celebrations were generally held in the Happy Valley. However, during inclement weather, the festivities were moved indoors into the pier pavilion.

This postcard circa 1907, shows dancing around the maypole, to a packed pavilion audience.

What's always puzzled me is how few photos/postcards there are of the interior of the Pavilion, apart from a few early ones. I've never seen any from about the 1920s onwards but surely there must have been many taken? Where are they all?  ?{}?

I have always wondered, given the intensity of the 1994 fire ...(as described by Trojan) .. how come The Grand itself didn't go up in flames too?

Must have been a terribly nerve wracking time ... and I reckon many locals will have felt very sick in the following days...

Only one thing saved the Grand...the wind was blowing the other way. That's why the windows in the hotels on Happy Valley Road exploded with the heat but the Grand was unscathed.

This postcard of the Pierhead is interesting as it shows the original Bandstand (still present today) but without the Pavilion (now the amusement arcade) which was added later.

How it looks today, you can clearly see the original Bandstand to the right and the Pavilion extension to the left:

You have told me before, but I can really picture those halcyon days now.

I remember going down those stairs to embark the Isle of Man steam ships.
What year would that have been?

Must have been 1970/71.

Interesting. I always thought those steps were removed when they rebuilt the Landing Stage in 1969 but maybe it was later. The walkway bit is till there under the Pavilion.

A Valentines postcard showing a bathchair being pushed along the pier:

This type of chair on wheels was devised by James Heath of Bath in around 1750 and for the next 75 years it rivalled the sedan chair in its popularity. It was mainly intended for use by invalids or elderly people. The example below is of the commonest variety with two wheels joined by an axle beneath the seat, with a small pivoting wheel in front supporting it. The chair could be pushed from behind and steered by the long rod connected to the front wheels and controlled by the occupant. The whole chair was designed with flowing lines. The bath chair was especially popular in Victorian times and used at seaside resorts. Some bath chairs had sliding hoods to protect the traveller from wind and rain. If I remember correctly an old lady, now long gone, used to chat to us as she took her daily stroll. She lived permanently at the Royal in Church Walks and said that her son had been pier master. Wonder if it was the same?

Thats interesting Nemesis...
In my day there were always ''residents'' in hotels,  who lived there permanently.
Shades of Mrs Tibbs and The Major on Fawlty Towers?

What happened to permanent hotel residents?   How did it come about in the first place?

Back in those days, hotel costs were probably relatively cheaper, as staff costs were not nearly as high as they were now. So little old ladies on a decent pension or with investment income could afford to live in a hotel. The hotel benefits by having the guaranteed income and the residents gets a discount on the normal room rate. I'd love to live in a hotel, no cooking or cleaning to do.

I think it still happens, but in slightly odder ways. There was an article some time ago about a couple who actually live in a Premier Inn, and I also know that there are people who live full-time in London hotels;  they simply move around when the fancy takes them.

It was not unknown in the first half of the last centaury for a guest to book a particular room or suite in a Hotel for the entire season, but only turn up and occupy it when the fancy took them, often without giving the Hotel prior notice of their arrival. It would as a by product provide various Hotel Managers with a very lucrative source of supplementary income by letting the room to passing trade when they were empty..... I think you will all be able to see where this thread is leading......  ))*

In May 1968, the Llandudno lifeboat Lilly Wainwright, made international news when she went to the aid of the 314 ton pleasure steamer St.Trillo which, with a fouled propellor, was dragging her anchor and drifting towards the Little Orme. On board were 420 people, including 325 wealthy Americans from the Swedish liner Kungsholm. These annual visits by the sister ships Kungsholm or Gripsholm were advertised in the United States as being "for Americans who have seen everywhere else".

The “St. Trillo” was acting as tender to the Kungsholm, which was anchored 1 1/2 miles offshore and returning passengers to the ship as part of a “Spring Adventure Cruise”. Also on board the tender were several members of the Kungsholm's crew and aprox 50 local residents who had paid half a crown for a closer look at the liner. Events turned for the worse, when the St Trillo attempted to tie up alongside the Kungsholm the mooring rope from the Kungsholm became wrapped round the port propellor of the St.Trillo. As the St Trillo drifted away, her overworked starboard engine failed and was within minutes of striking the Little Orme. In worsening weather lifeboats from Llandudno, Rhyl and Moelfre stood by but the situation became serious when the ships doctor reported that at least three passengers needed emergency doses of insulin. By this time the Kungsholm had put to sea because of the northerly gale and it was into the teeth of this gale that the Lilly Wainwright set off in pursuit of the liner and collect insulin packs and syringes which were then transferred to the “St. Trillo”. With ropes attached to two lifeboats at the stern and the Conwy trawler Kilravock acting as a tug, the “St. Trillo” was later berthed at Llandudno Pier, from where the passengers were taken to a hotel for the night. The passengers expressed their gratitude to the crewmen by placing dollars to the value of £3,562.00 in a collecting box.

I remember the American Liner and the sudden influx of Americans who would descend on the town, one of them stopped a group of us and asked us "what's the name of this city?" and he wrote down our answer asking us to spell it out, - "D as in Doughnut?"

I see that Holyhead have had another £250,000 from WAG to enable cruise liners to call. If only Llandudno could get a few quid to get its Landing Stage back into use, eh? Sadly, our elected representative doesn't seem that bothered:

"Conwy County Cllr Chris Hughes, who chaired a tourism destination working group, said: "I am delighted that more cruise ships will be coming.""
http://www.theonlinemail.co.uk/bangor-and-anglesey-news/local-bangor-and-anglesey-news/2011/03/09/new-cruise-ship-hopes-as-250-000-is-invested-in-holyhead-dredging-66580-28304802/ (http://www.theonlinemail.co.uk/bangor-and-anglesey-news/local-bangor-and-anglesey-news/2011/03/09/new-cruise-ship-hopes-as-250-000-is-invested-in-holyhead-dredging-66580-28304802/)

I don't recall him ever saying anything about Llandudno's Landing Stage? Maybe he's more concerned about things that go on several counties away rather than in Conwy County itself?  :o

I'm guessing that this image of the war memorial was taken in the twenties, presumably not long after it was constructed, and with the amount of floral tributes - the pain of war still fresh in the memory.

The boat alongside the jetty is the Sunbeam owned by Sam Lloyd Jones. David Whitfield did two U.K. tours one in 1961 the other in 1962 this picture must be 1961 as I think that the Sunbeam was scraped down to the bare wood and varnished for the 1962 season.

If my memory serves me right, David Whitfield was at Pensarn in July or August 1966.
There used to be a working men's club of some sort opposite Station Street and The Park pub.
I believe there was a bit of a fracas due to him giving some unwanted attention to a lady in the audience.
