Hello, and welcome to the Three Towns community. We're an eclectic mix of folk in here, and you're very welcome to visit although, as with most forums, to get the best out of the place and to see everything there is to see you will need to register. Registration is very simple, but you won't be able to post or see some of the boards until your membership has been approved.
The community comprises a group of folk whose common association is the Llandudno, Colwyn Bay and Conwy areas.
The forums provide a meeting place for those who wish to debate, stay in contact, chat, keep the brain cells working and generally pass the time in what we like to think of as a convivial, interesting and supportive environment. There's also an immense fund of help available, from a highly experienced and extremely well-read core user base, and you're welcome to make the most of the combined intellect and knowledge resource available. Please take a moment to review our "Welcome" page and enjoy your stay.
One small point: if you have questions about the area, either past or present, please post them in the relevant topic, rather than in here, as this is really just a place for introducing yourself.
Thanks, and enjoy your stay :-)
-
Thanks Ian.
I cannot imagine the work that you and Dave put in.
-
You're welcome, N :-)) Good to have you over here :-))
-
In case anyone hasn't seen the various messages over on the Llandudno Local Forum and is wondering why they are now a member of the Three Towns Forum, I'll explain...
Both the Llandudno Local and Colwyn Bay Local Forums are being absorbed into a single Forum for the towns of Llandudno, Colwyn Bay & Conwy - the Three Towns Forum. As such, everyone with an active account on those forums is being migrated across to the new Forum - which basically entails you receiving an email which will have the same username as you used previously but a new password (because the forum software has changed).
If any members have problems logging in, please feel free to contact either myself or Ian via email at:
dave at threetownsforum dot co dot uk
ian at threetownsforum dot co dot uk

Looking forward to seeing lots of interesting content on the new forum, thanks to Dave & Ian for all your hard work and a fresh new look!
-
Hope you like it! :)

Fester here..
I just wanted to add my thanks too, to Ian and Dave for the massive and prompt undertaking, in terms of creating this alternative to my beloved Forum.
Its a thankless task, there's nothing in it financially for you and you didn't have to do it...but you did.
I'm not finding it so easy to navigate around this Forum, but I'm sure I'll get my eye in soon...
I hope all the other previous members clamber aboard this lifeboat..and loads of other new members too.
I'm a liitle upset that you won't allow SPAM though, you mention that its annoying or nasty. Well I love it when its grilled and served with beans and a little brown sauce, so there.
Fest.

:)
I'm not finding it so easy to navigate around this Forum,
The best way is to use the "Show unread posts since last visit" link a the top RH side of the page. Makes it a doddle to see what's happened since you last visited.
-
Hi, many thanks for getting this sorted 8) I'm still sorting lots out since our move to Penrhyn Bay 6 weeks ago, What a great place this is! Hi to Fester, who we've seen several times in his great shop on the Pier and Mike (of golf course fame ) who we met the other night in our local Co op.
-
A big thanks to Dave and Ian for their hard work, time and effort in setting up this new forum. I wish the forum all the best for the future and thanks again to you both for the help and advice you have given in the past. :)
Like Fester, I am having problems navigating around the forum but I am sure that the more I use it the easier it'll get.
-
Thanks Hugo. Your walking topic is http://threetownsforum.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=33.0 (http://threetownsforum.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=33.0) here, BTW

Well have eventually got on to the new forum, was having trouble with my password. My thanks to Dave and Ian for giving us a new forum all the best to you both.

You're very welcome, B; I was worried about Follow-on and Fun for All if you went missing :-X

Seems to be ok now. You could always start a new topic just for your ad, if you want, and I will delete the old one. People might not look at 'Test Posting' so much.

The new website looks very promising.
Well done to all concerned.
-
Good job Dave & Ian!
-
Thanks to both and good to see you here :-)

This Forum is a little like a lifeboat, rescuing us poor lost souls from the wreckage of the previous Forum.
But...I am a little worried about the wellbeing of a few previous contributors...did they make the leap accross?
I'm thinking about The Medz, Yorkie ....and the most worrying of all...BrumBob !!, (the biggest contributor in recent weeks)
I'm just hoping they are on holiday or suchlike..?
-
We did transfer their membership and emailed them with their new passwords. I suppose time will tell.
-
The new set up looks a big improvement and it makes more sense to me to include the three towns.
I like the calendar feature if it can include local events ?
All the best for the future
Dave
-
The calendar certainly can include local events.
-
Really finding my way about now but how long does it normally take for a picture to appear in a member's profile?
-
If you upload it your account related settings, you should see it immediately. If you send it to me, I can do it for you, if you\re having problems.
-
Thanks for the hard work getting things sorted.
Nice to be back.

Good to have you back, Mull. :)

Welcome, Yorkie. Hope you enjoy the place :-))
-
Where's Brumbob? I miss his sense of humour and asides :'(
-
Dave and I were wondering the same thing...
-
Me too, I asked about him the other day ....but according to the stats he hasn't even logged on yet has he?
-
Thanks for the Welcome. Just moved to Penrhyn Bay 11 months ago from Louth in Lincolnshire . Love the area and getting to know some people here now. :D I originate from Edmonton in London & my husband from Seaham in Co. Durham.

Hi, glad to see you on here and thanks for a very good evening last night too Z**

We seem to be getting a steady stream of new members joining every day - a warm Welcome to you all and please don't be shy in posting if you see something that interests you - all opinions are welcomed and encouraged on here. :)
-
We've just passed through the 100 members mark, less than one month after opening. Over 1,700 posts, too. Thanks to all that have joined and posted, if you know of anyone else that may be interested in the forum, please tell them!

Many thanks to yourself and Ian for initiating things and keeping the forum well moderated.
&well&
-
And so say all of us - well done you guys.
-
Hear Hear ....
100 members, but wouldn't it be nice if more than just half a dozen of us actually posted stuff?
Now ... here's an invite to everyone out there, we ARE interested in what you have to say.
Anything loosely linked with this area of North Wales, whether it be positive, negative or just an observation....LETS HAVE IT !
Having met many of the regulars on the Forum, it is inhabited by some great guys and girls .... so don't be shy, dive in !
<:<:<:< $3towns$
-
In fact, there are 19 regular posters, with a further 20 that have posted at some point. There are also some issues I'm trying to track down. One such is that Dave transferred quite a few members across, but some of those went on to register themselves separately, although their original user names still exist. Thee are also a couple of places where I know the members has posted, but the system isn't showing posts against their username.
All in all, however, in forum terms we have a pretty high percentage of our membership posting.
-
I've had some business cards printed up to promote the Forum. Nice, eh?
-
So there are 100 odd members .... but two of them are you ..two of them are Dave, two of them are Trojan, Two of them are Rex ... etc...
In that case we have one hell of a good ratio of posters to members.
My invitation still stands though ..... and WHERE IS BRUM BOB ????
-
<:<:<:<
-
Pity. Ive given Dave a lift a few times in my old banger. I thought I might get a lift back in a Merc!!!
-
Fred got home from his Sunday round of golf later than normal and very tired. "Bad day at the course?" his wife asked.
"Everything was going fine," he said. "Then Harry had a heart attack and died on the 10th tee."
"Oh, that's awful!"
"You're not kidding. For the whole back nine it was hit the ball, drag Harry, hit the ball, drag Harry."

Congratulations and well done Dave and Ian, and a big thank you to you both ( I'm sure I speak for all the "Users" don't I?)
Keep up the good work.
-
I'd like to second that. What pat.ience. And I know Dave does a lot of internet work on his blog and flicker, to mention just two. It was through him on flicker that I came to join this forum.
-
Thanks to both of you for your kind words. I was saying to Ian only yesterday that its hard to believe that forum has only been running for a month, it seems like it has been around a long time.
-
Thanks from me too, I'm sure I speak for many more when I say we all enjoy all the local info.
-
I'll echo that (that, that, that.... )
Let's hope we celebrate properly when we reach 12 months.
-
BTW how many admirals and lieutenant-commanders can "one ship" have?
-
Well, as many Lt-Cmdrs as warrant the post, the Admirals are just along for the trip and it's only the Captains where things get abut tricky... _))*

Thanks. They have Stargate and Star Wars but not Star Trek. Or Babylon 5.

There's a surprising dearth of ST smileys but I managed to find a couple
-
Good to see the number of users tuning in reached 43 today out of a total of 111 registered - that seems a pretty good level of interest by users to find out what is currently going on in the area and what others have to say.
-
Positive, indeed. :)
I'm hopeful that a small piece to promote the Forum will appear in the Weekly News in the next week or so. ££$

Hello Ian,
I am a total newbie, joined as ''dontheturner'' on Monday, and something went awry! because when I tried to login on Tuesday, it would not recognise my password!
So I re-joined, as a different person! Don Meek,
Please can you re-issue a password for dontheturner, and then cancel, the other one? donmeek@hotmail.co.uk
Thank You
-
I've done that, Don, and assigned you a password which you should change as soon as you get it. I'll PM it to you via this account, then delet this account when you let me know yu've received it.
And welcome aboard!

Hello everyone. Just wanted to introduce myself. I've lived in Conwy town for about 10 years now. If you've had a pint in a pub in Conwy you've probably seen me there at some point.
Looking forward to learning more about the area.
-
Welcome to the forum,MrF!
-
Hi ,Dont know if this is the correct place to introduce myself but here goes .
I have lived in Llandudno all of my life ,bought up in the hotel business untill I married ,I live in localy and I have worked in Llandudno Junction for the same company for the last 18 years .
Looking forward to taking part in the forum .

Welcome Alice - it's a good place to be.

Thank you for the welcome ,I also forgot to say I found out about the forum re- the Weekly News..incase anyone one is keeping track !

We are and welcome aboard, Alice. Good to have you with us.

This is probably as good a place as any to remind you all that the forum is public, and thus we have to be cautious about what we reveal about the members. Things to be wary about include revealing where folk work, where they live, their surnames, occupations and birthdays. It's easy to let slip with things, especially as many of us actually know each other in real life, but this forum is accessible to about 5bn people, and some of them just aren't very pleasant.

You can say that again. ! :o

Hia,
I'm Pendragon. I live in Conwy and have done for the last 8 years, I have worked in Llandudno for the last 18mths. I have always worked, owned and managed pubs in the area.
I love meeting new people and enjoy having banter. I'm happily married and have been for 7 years (not sure if my husband is though lol) I have a 21 year old son (he obviously has to call me Aunty when anyone is around) and a 13year old son with my attitude (every day I wake up and thank God he's not a girl)
I love this forum its interesting, informative and funny. Dave when you get those cards pop some in the club and I'll give them out to the regulars.
Anyway back to posting
Thanx Angie

I completely agree, because up the point of me joining this Forum, no one knew that I was a fat, bald bloke, who can't sing.... patronises dives like The Carlton, ... who struggles to sell merchandise on a creaking pier, .. and has no dress sense whatsoever.
And now, due to snap-happy guys like Dave and Trojan, ... 5 billion, one hundred and twenty five people are fully aware of this!

My username didn't work so i resigned up with the same - is that right to have done?
Welcome back, and, yes, you did the right thing! :D
-
Dave how do you quote a line in someones post, I can't seem to grt thr hang of it.
-
Either click on "Quote" which will quote the whole mail
or
Highlight the words you want then use Cntrl C to copy and then place where you want with Cntrl V.
-
How do you get their words in blue then Yorkie ?
-
If you click on 'Quote', the the message box will appear and the previous message displayed something like this:
[ quote author=Pendragon link=topic=13.msg4215#msg4215 date=1287930922]
How do you get their words in blue then Yorkie ?
[ / quote ]
You can delete part of the previous message if you dont want to quote it all, just make sure that the quote begisn with the [ quote ] bit and ends with the [ / quote ] bit. Your reply should always begin after the [ /quote ] bit.
Then it should look like this:
How do you get their words in blue then Yorkie ?
-
By far the easiest way is this:
1. Decide the phrase you want to quote
2. Left-click and drag across all the words you want to quote
3. Ctrl-C
3. In your post, click the quote icon
4. Ctrl-V
5. Click outside the two [ quote ] things in brackets
6. Type whatever else you wanted to say.
The phrase will now appear in blue when you post it but nothing else will.
One thing to watch for when using the Crtl-C method is 'framing'. Sometimes, if you get the position of the cursor slightly out when you're copying, a faint yellow frame will be displayed around the entire post. If you then continue, you'll end up quoting everything.
-
I notice the latest member to the Forum calls him/herself "Grasscutter".
Can I ask "are you really a grasscutter and if so do you do it within the three towns area?"
If so I think one or two of us could find you some work when the grass starts growing again - that is if you are interested.

Might be worth you sending him a PM, Stan, in case he doesn't see this. :)

Well, we've been open just over a month, now. Our official one month anniversary was November 5th, and I though it was very nice of Llandudno to hold a firework display in recognition of the event :-))))
More seriously, although it's still comparatively early days, I think it's safe to describe the forum as quite successful in what it sets out to do, and we can only hope that the one year anniversary in eleven months will see us still going strong. Thanks to everyone who's joined us and who contribute to the various ramblings, jokes, quizzes and debates.
-
Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself.
I'm 43 and I left Colwyn Bay in September '83 to join the army, never to return, (sounds ominous, eh?).
I now live in Germany and try to make my way over once a year to see my beloved, if not estranged home town.
I write a couple of infrequent blogs, one of which is about my memories of growing up in Colwyn, it's all very nostalgic and schmaltzy so please don't go there on a full stomach.
And that's about it really, if you're interested my blog is at:
http://boyfromthebay.wordpress.com/ (http://boyfromthebay.wordpress.com/)
And if you're not?
I'm sure I'll survive ;D
Reg.
-
Hi, Reggie, and welcome to the forum. The blog makes an interesting read - if a little sad, in places.
-
Thanks Ian.
The Boy from the Bay blog is more a personal therapy than anything else, as laughable and "American" as that may sound.
There was a time, before we had kids, that I never even gave The Bay a passing thought.
However, children do tend to make one appreciate ones roots more and now, as odd as it might seem when one considers that I left home at 16, I am more homesick than ever.
It isn't the kind of homesickness experienced by the 16 year old me who left to join the army, the pang for known territory when immersed in an alien environment.
No, this is more of an urgent nostalgia, a wish to return to earlier times. A hope that my children will appreciate where I come from.
But I wouldn't take it too seriously Ian, I'm definitely not a serious chap ;-)
-
Fair enough; but you've got a good writing style.

I hope I am not being nasty to perfectly innocent new member. But, I must point out this fact. Couple of things spring to mind, but the most likely is that your cookies' file has become corrupted. If it doesn't happen again, that's what it was.

How odd, I've never seen that before. ???
-
Your account has been marked for deletion!
Some has just logged into your account (8.05pm) from IP 86.23.14.207 (Virgin Media ADSL) and tried to delete your account. Deletion of any account requires Admin approval, so that's why the message popped up previously. I've cancelled the deletion and would suggest you maybe change your password. Had to put this on the Forum as PM could be deleted by whoever is accessing your account.

Sounds very dodgy Angie! :o :o :o WWW :>:> :>:>
I know Gez thinks you spend too much time on here... but thats ridiculous!
Well done Dave... Y^^Y Y^^Y

Your Pendragon account is still active. Someone knows your password and is messing with your account. I will reset your password and send a PM to your Happy Bunny account.

Hia Dave just done an IP check on that number. It came up with Crawley Court? Hampshire. I'll get a tracker programme today and check it out again. All sorted now though. They wont find this password 'cos I'm going to put it in the rotweillers basket :P Cheers Dave mwah
-
Welcome to the forum Pendragon ;D
-
Aah thanks for that BrumBob. :P
-
You said about my cookies yesterday,? how do I get rid of them.
We now think someone is messing with your account. In a case where someone else gains access to your account, there are - generally - only three possibilities:
1. you don't always log off, which leaves your account open to vandalism by anyone who simply manages to open your computer and bring up the log in page.
2. High security, dark forces backed by the CIA have hacked into your account to assist their quest for world domination.
3. Someone you know extremely well and who is quite likely to know your password is having a little 'fun' with you.
On the cookies front, however, it's always wise to clean out your cookies for time to time, but be careful, as some contain important password information and aid sites you use regularly to recognise you.
Cookies are tiny files placed on your computer by sites which you visit. This site places one on your hard disc, so you can be 'remembered' by the system when you return. You can get a free cookie cleaner from here (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/downloads/cookie_software/). Cookies are generally very useful but sometimes can be used to spy on your web habits. Dave and I have said this before, but Firefox is probably the most secure browser in the way it deals with cookies ,and IE the worst. here's a lot of inromatin about cookies here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_cookie).

What do you suspect Trojan? Have you come accross this before?
Also, when "The one that calls himself Trojan" was moderator of the Llandudno Local, one balmy California evening, he was mysteriously unable to log in. Then, all of a sudden The Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Local's disappeared overnight. Maybe someone was privy to his password, or maybe it was a hacker?
Then Ollerton apparently walks into Kindways the next day, they start laughing hysterically at him and tell him his moderator has eliminated his forums.
I don't suppose this has been mentioned over a few beers in Llandudno town centre has it?

Hello
Not sure if this is the right place to post this message, but here goes...
Just to say hello really!
We are a small charity which helps children and young people in need, within Conwy County.
Like any charity, we're always looking to attract new supporters.
I look forward to participating in the discussion on the forum, it looks great (and I'm thinking, how come I've never discovered it before ??)
If anyone would like to know more about our charity, feel free to have a look at our website http://www.conwykidsmatter.org.uk (http://www.conwykidsmatter.org.uk)

Welcome Conwy KM, is there a way to get involved with your charity? Such as voluntary work, I would be more than happy to help. This is an excellent cause. ;D

Thanks Pendragon, I've sent you a PM.

Greetings to you all from (sunny) Wolverhampton. Newly registered and looking forward to accessing the site whenever possible. I'm in my late fifties and your particular area is of great interest to me having spent very happy times and gained many excellent memories when on holiday with my late parents in the 1950's and early 1960's.Only had the chance of passing through once again during the 1980's in the course of a previous employment but hopefully will get the chance later this year for a one-day visit.
I work overseas quite some distance away on occasions nowadays for several weeks each time so please don't think I've gone missing permanently!
I was for many years employed in the transport business and it is in connection with this that I may be able to forward on to you at times a number of North Wales archive photos from various internet websites; but in particular I am a long-standing cinema and theatre historian locally here, and in that capacity also may well have a good chance of passing on to you a number of items with cinemas and theatres the focus.
Richie.

A warm welcome RichieC - we look forward to you joining us when you can.

Welcome to the Forum! I'm especially looking forward to hearing about cinemas/theatres.

I'm just working out how to post images. Think I have the icon-second from left on the second row of squares. Where do I go from there though? Is there a direct Photobucket connection, or maybe from my own computer?
Thanks.
-
There are full instructions here, (http://threetownsforum.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=114.0) Richie, but posting an image is simply a matter of clicking 'additional options' (lower LH corner) as you're composing a reply, and that opens up a dialogue from where you can post images.
Good to see we have another early poster on the forum!
-
How to upload photos to a post.
1) After writing your post, underneath the message box, click on Additional Options.
2) Next to Attach, click on the 'Choose File' button.
3) Select the photo file you want to use from my computer's hard drive (it must be less than 300k in size).
4) If you want to add another photo, click on (more attachments) and repeat the procedure.
5) Click on Post and the message & photo should be displayed.
The photos you have added are are displayed at the end of your post, you dont choose where they go in the post. You can add a maximum of 4 photos per post at present.
-
Thanks for that Ian. I'll have a go if I get time later today, otherwise I'll make during this coming this weekend for everyone.
Just be prepared to trim out the mis-hits on the way there! LOL

Welcome to the forum Ritchie! :)
-
Hi. My name is Andy Williams. I grew up in the old Colwyn Bay Hotel on Marine Drive in Colwyn Bay in the 1960's where my father was manager. At the same time my grandfather - William Williams was manager of the Queens Hotel on the Promenade in Llandudno.
My mother's sister was a teacher in Llandudno - Maureen White - and her an her husband (my uncle Peter ) also ran the Alexander Stores in West Shore for a while and also the corner shop in Rhuddlan Avenue.
-
Hi Andy, welcome to the forum. Any tales to tell about the Colwyn Bay Hotel?
[smg id=53]
-
Not really - was all a long time ago. It was actually owned by a family called Quellyn-Roberts who owned several big hotels and a big wine importing business. The main man then was Paul Quellyn-Roberts who had organised arctic convoys during the war. They were numbered using his initials - PQ, such as the infamous PQ17.
My arch enemies were the Owen lads from a smaller hotel across the road. I read on here someone mentioning the private tunnel from the old days that linked the hotel to the station. I remember as a child that there was a huge network of tunnels and underground rooms underneath the hotel that actually went out quite far.
-
Was the 'smaller hotel across the road' the St. Enochs? I happened to be passing during demolition and grabbed a load of photos, of which this is one:
(http://farm1.static.flickr.com/90/271399022_1ed448a61b_z.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/davellandudno/271399022/)
Demolition (http://www.flickr.com/photos/davellandudno/271399022/#) by davidrobertsphotography (http://www.flickr.com/people/davellandudno/), on Flickr

Think it was the next one down or the one next to that. We used to throw stones across the road at each other and other 'boys-will-be-boys stuff'. On my 8th birthday party me and some friends were stoning them and their mates and I got cracked in the eye and it game up like a golf ball.
Was great times. The Owens and their gang and me and a lad called Gareth Roberts from Kenelm Drive and our gang used to terrorise that part of town down as far as the swimming pool in Rhos-On-Sea and as far the other way as Eirias Park and the pier.
The pier makes me sad. Had loads of memories about that. Climbing over the gate at 8 years of age at 5 in the morning to go fishing. I learnt to fish off that pier. Hope the council get the money to buy and refurbish it.
I was a bit posh back then. I went to school at Loretto Convent down the West Shore/Gt Orme end of Llandudno til I was 8 and then went to Lyndon Prep School. When I was 11 we moved to another of the Quellyn-Roberts hotels - Rowton Hall in Chester then my parents split up not long after and I lived a 'normal' life from then on !!
-
Welcome Andy.
I was under the impression that Loreto Convent was a girls school in the 1960's. :-*
-
Hi and yet another Welcome to you Andy. :D

Memories like this should be cherished forever.
Thanks to the $3towns$ now they can!

Peter White - He was a golfer. Can't remember what the corner shop on Rhuddlan Ave was called but they still live there across the road.
Do you know them?
-
Yes, nice people.
What's your cousins Carol & Sean doing nowadays?
-
Shaun was a Royal Marine and now lives in Northampton. Not sure what Carol and Jane do or where they are - not seen them for years.
Shaun is on facebook - is he a mate of yours? Do you want his e-mail
Maybe you know my sister Hilary? She lives in Llandudno as well
-
Shaun was a mate many moons ago - I can look him up on Facebook now that I know.
Hilary C Williams yes, used to frequent Bartons with Irene Roberts & Hayley Lancaster.
-
Would Shaun be about 44 years old, went to Lloyd St school & John Brights?

Thanks to everyone for the greetings. I've not disappeared-I promise! I would imagine though that due to work/beer/jumping off wardrobe commitments it won't be an everyday posting-every month maybe?
The administrators by checking my log-ins will notice regular visits however. I'm presently going back over all the previous postings in various categories to try and make sure there won't turn out to be any duplicate discussions/photographs etc.
Above all though, I'm spending excellent hours reviving memories of the 1950's and 1960's but that in turn only makes less time available to make postings possible!
-

It certainly is. :)
No, I'm afraid I don't know Stephen or Sian. Maybe by sight I would though.
-
Hi everyone, I'm Ste (Stephen), just joined today although I've been browsing the past few weeks. I am planning on moving to Llandudno after August, so this will be a great place to find out stuff! Great form by the way!
-
Welcome aboard, Stephen. Whereabouts in Llandudno will you be moving to?
-
Thanks Ian $good$ At the moment I'm keeping options open but first choice around the Gloddaeth Street/Church Walks area (in that broad area)
-
Hi All,
Found your forum through google and thought it was worth a look.
My boyfriend and myself are looking to relocate to Llandudno by the end of this year to early next year. My boyfriend is setting up his own radio buisness so thought I would join to see if anyone had any comments or suggestions.
I also hope to get to know the area a bit better as looking forward to moving near the coast. :D
Gail
-
Welcome aboard, Gail. When you say
My boyfriend is setting up his own radio buisness
what will that entail?
-
Hi Ian
He's hoping to set up locally on fm and also worldwide on internet. At the moment he is doing the odd show himself and is internet only but he has most of his DJ's and has his experience. All he needs now is a place and buisness sponsors who want to be advertised.
-
Sounds interesting. I wish him well; the radio business can be tricky but rewarding.
-
Hello and thanks for the warm welcome. Thanks also for creating this fantastic resource, I stumbled on your forum quite by accident while searching for a hotel in Llandudno. I grew up in the town and now live in Holland. I try to get back to visit when I can and I will actually be in Llandudno on the 24th August (2011). I will post some of my memories and photos when I get a chance. I see my photo is already on here - I have the same photo hanging in my hallway at this very moment!. I bet you're curious now...
Why the name? it is from a joke very well known to all Llandudno folk. I will post it in the (adult) section of you're amusing 'Pub' section but I am sure you will be very familiar with it anyway.
Thanks again for all of your hard work and enthusiasm for what is surely one of the most beautiful places in the world (but then I must confess I am a little biased!)
-
Welcome to the Forum, Ludo. :) Which photo is that, then?
-
Welcome, Ludo.
Many years ago I was told a joke about a gentleman from Llandudno called Ludo.
I guess it is the same one. :D
-
I think I heard it also. Gave the nurse a surprise! ;)
-
Thanks all - yes that's the one Yorkie, I have told that joke countless times with as many variations and it always gets a laugh!. I will post some more info and photos/interesting items shortly when I get used to how the forum works, I have to have a good look at the FAQs and get up to speed. It really is a great forum though - my nostalgia has flared up something rotten since I found you...
-
I think I heard it also. Gave the nurse a surprise! ;)
Mine is long enough to have that REALLY long Welsh place name tattoed on it ..... you know the one .... RHYL. L0L
-
I can just get my initials on mine - lucky my first name is Ian or I wouldn't be able! L0L
-
This 'Ludo' topic reminds me of a fellow who was in the same barrack room as me when I did my National Service over 50 years ago. It would have been possible, not only to tattoo 'Llandudno' on his, but also a panoramic view of the town complete with both Great and Little Orm's, and there would have been room for a Welsh Dragon at one end and a view of Conwy Castle at the other! :o
-
:o :o The man must have been a human tripod!! :o :o
-
Apparently at fancy dress parties, he would throw it over his left shoulder and go as a petrol pump! L0L L0L

Oh dear, this sounds like a slippery slope to me....
How often will ''innocent'' ficticious gambling lead to a yearning to get rich quick, and do it for real?
If that happens to you, take a look at BETBOO.COM
Not that I have a vested interest in that company, Its not as if I have shares in it or anything...(cough, splutter)

Hello Snowcap, Welcome to your internet home. A bit late in my sending welcome here, especially as I saw you and your family struggling against the winds only this afternoon. Mike
-
thanks for that mike, we had just left fester and climbed back up through happy valley, thats why we looked a little bit wind swept. We asked the police what the chopper had been looking for, it was a young lady of 46 that had gone missing. Hope they found her i believe your in for a rough night tonight.
-
Call in and say hello when you are next in residence.
-
All the police cars and the helicopter seemed to go away after about an hour of searching. I also saw the searching family in question going down old road looking relieved so I can only assume that they found the lady they were looking for.
-
thanks for that, may be back tomorrow
-
See IM

sorry whats im?

Sorry Instant Message. If you look in My Messages on the list above hopefully(not promising cos I'm rubbish with IT) there will be a message in there.

Hello ,
Thank you for adding me to join this forum,
I am from the Netherlands , $00$ Yups.....from the other side of the sea ,
but I love to visit England as often as I can.
My first steps in England was when I was 2 years old,
Then I came back almost every year for Holidays,
From the South till the North of Scotland.
England has changed much over the years, but still I love it very much :)
Forgive me my writting errors, I do my very best , but it is not perfect , I know ;-))
If I write words wrong , just let me know , coz it is a good exercise to improve my English $good$
If you want to know something more.... just ask....if I can answer I will do
( oops ... did I said that well?? )
Have a nice day all, Seeyah ;)

Welcome to the Forum, Veltmeijer. :)
On one of your visits to the UK (after you have been to Lowestoft), perhaps you would like to travel right across to the west and visit Wales, which is also a beautiful country. Here in north west Wales we have mountains close to the sea and many lovely places to visit. As you look at different parts of the Forum you will see photographs showing just how beautiful the area is.
$walesflag$
-
I know , it is a shame , i saw so much of England but I never been in Wales ,
My Parents visited Wales twice, they went to a large Holiday Park in North Wales,
I will try to come to Wales next Year , in the summertime , I 'll look for a good adres,
Or if anyone of this Forum knows some good adres to stay , just let me know ;-)
Ok , It 'll be Wales next year , thats for sure now :D

Can't advertise for myself Blodyn when there are other forum members in the same line of business,
http://www.thebestof.co.uk/local/llandudno (http://www.thebestof.co.uk/local/llandudno)
This could be some help !
-
Thank you for the Help ,
Normally I always take a self catering accommodation (minimum 3 people) when I'm in England.
It could be a Cottage but it can also be a Holiday Park ( caravan park )
I also Travell by boat , so I am in possession of my own car and not dependent on bus or train.
At the end of this year , we get in the Netherlands the new Brochures at the travel agency,
for the summer holiday 2012.
Meanwhile, I can do a lot of searching on the internet, ... but if someone really knows a nice place ..... let me know.

Thanks, Nemesis. I didn't mean to put you on the spot as you're the only one whom I know is in that line of business, so my apologies.
-
No probs Blodyn, but there are some very odd people in my trade, possibly not forum members, but would do anyone down if they could. Most of us are very friendly, but there is always one !!!http://www.thebestof.co.uk/local/llandudno/business-guide/self-catering-accommodation (http://www.thebestof.co.uk/local/llandudno/business-guide/self-catering-accommodation)
If it is self catering that you require the first one on the site is open all year and well recommended.

Thank you Blodyn en Nemesis,
I'm going to look at the information

-
Welcome Welshmunchkin!! I'm sure you'll enjoy it here!

Did I really type " born and BREAD" in my last posting? :-[ I meant "bred" of course, and yes I do know the difference! Wish my computer had predictive text -- or maybe not! Thanks for your "welcomes" everyone! I will post more, but it's taking me so long to read everything on the site, except anything remotely to do with sport!Hope to join in more soon. :)

Today I met another Forum member, one who is yet to post, but ''lurks'' on here and reads it very regularly.
It was GAYLORD SCREWSBY, remember that character from The Dick Emery Show?
I was about to say Welcome Gaylord, but I usually reserve comments like that for Dave R ..
-
Seems there are a few names I recognise floating around here.......hello to all of you.

Good to see you back in action, John! $good$
For those who don't know, John was a Moderator on the now defunct Colwyn Bay Local forum which, with the also now defunct Llandudno Local Forum, was the forerunner of the present Three Towns Forum.
-
Hello John,
I expect that there will be a few other people that you know on this Forum, but these days go under different names?
-
Hi, John; good to hear from you :-)))

I left Colwyn Bay about a decade ago but i was born in Nant Y Glyn Maternity Hospital some 62 years ago , i still have a keen interest in my hometown and the surrounding areas and still have Cousins and their families living mainly in Old Colwyn and upper Colwyn Bay, my other connection is i was the chef at the White lion Llanelian for over a decade until i moved in 2001.
So i hope to read more than post as i will get a better idea on whats happening in this area that way.

Evening all. We're going to be moving into the area next month so just having a mooch round. We've talked about it for many years and after our last hols took the plunge. We normally head down the peninsula but I've still got work and that would be a bit of a trek to Liverpool so decided on colwyn bay. Had a look round and liked the facilities compared to our own village plus the fact OH started sea fishing so decided he needed a boat as he only caught a crab and dogfish last time. Of course to use the boat effectively we need to be near water and colwyn bay it is.
I've been watching the a55 traffic which shows up green on Google maps each morning but what's it actually like as I'll commute until I can find something more local. Normally takes me over an hour now going m6/62/rocket so even if its an hour from CB I'll have a much nicer view. I do tend to leave pretty early to miss the bulk of the local traffic.
Anyway very excited to finally be taking the plunge!
-
Hi, Minime. The M6/ M62 / Rocket route can get busy, so you could try the alternative (and usually faster) option of going across the Runcorn Bridge. However, one breakdown or accident there, and you're stuck of course.
But glad you're joining us :-)
-
Hi Ian I mean that's my current route from where we live now and takes an hour or more. Most of that time is rocket to city centre where I work so Im looking at a55/a41 or a55/m53 route when we move as birkenhead tunnel very close to work
-
You'll have to get a SatNav! :D

Im on agency so its claimable :). Will be looking more local once we're in though so only short term hopefully

Hi all,
I have lived in this wonderful area for around three years now. Moving from Southern England (be gentle now ;) ) to live with my childhood friend who is now my wife.
I feel very privileged to be able to be here and have felt a great community togetherness quietly behind the scenes with I assume the local authorities also having a great effort in town life, appearance and events.
In the first time in my life I wish to learn about the history of the area and help in the community as well.
Expect many questions!
Inky :)

As a new addition to the forum, I will be looking forward to gaining greater insights into on going and proposed developments that may effect the communities of the three towns. Fox.

-
Thanks. :) I've had the pleasure of getting to know the three towns throughout my childhood and I'm very interested in discovering more about the communities and the services provided. I think the forum seems a great way to network, discuss issues and make new friendships. I've been following the forum for about a month or so now and I've noted that there are key contributors which on the whole appear to be guys. My interests include the arts, music, literature and fitness. I've been fortunate enough to have enjoyed an interesting career, i'm well travelled and have two very rewarding children. I'm looking forward to coaxing a few more women to step out into discussion on the forum concerning their experiences of community service provision and other local issues of interest. :)

Dave---didnt you have a family connection in Llanelian.?
Yes, my Mum's side of the family are from there. My Grandfather worked on the Coed Coch Estate and my Grandmother ran the Post Office there back in the 1960s/70s.
-
Hello everyone! I am new here and looking forward to getting stuck in! I'll admit that I'm not actually a resident, only inquisitive, and hopefully to become a visitor in the near future! My grandfather was born in Llandudno and I am keen to find out more about the place and his past. There are currenltly many gaps! My son lives in Liverpool, so the trip is possible!
-
Welcome Rosy, you have certainly come to the right place! Enjoy! :D
-
Hope that you enjoy the forum Rosy, there are many old photos on here that will show Llandudno in your Grandfather's day.
If you want to know anything about where he lived etc etc post your request under genealogy and research and someone on the forum may be able to help

Hi,
This is my first post.
Many, many years ago we lived in Llandudno way back in the 1940's.I want to school in West Shore, can remember getting the double decker tram to and from school,

Good to see you posting, thaithyme.

HI, Thank you for letting me enter this forum. I have never lived in Llandudno, but my mother was brought up here ,. She was the youngest daughter of Arthur and Maggie Statham , of The Rock Gardens , Queens road. My grandfather ran the nursery selling alpines and rock plants as grown in the Happy valley .As a child we spent our holidays there . often turning out in our night clothes to listen to the band and hymn singing on a Sunday evening on the prom . My uncle Roly Statham was the last member of the family to live in Llandudno.

Working in the area for 6 - 8 months, just saying "Hello"

Welcome to the area & hope that you enjoy your stay here, Maghull reminds me of of when we travelled there to play football, many years ago and after the game we always went to the Punchbowl Pub and we were there from when it opened until the time it closed.
Gordon West the Everton goalkeeper often served our drinks and always had a pint nearby for himself. Saw Ian Gallaghan there once and he was drinking fruit juice as he always kept himself in good shape.

Just saying Hello. Local plumbing and heating business, always interested on the goings on across the Three Towns area.

Gordan West was a great man, very funny and witty. I remember him saying 'If I had earned the money Rooney earns, I would have played for 2 years then buggered on a beach and drink!' Sadly he died a couple of years ago.

'Honey West' as the Kop called him! Even presented him with a handbag before one derby match at Anfield!

I've moved the research questions into "Llandudno's early Families" in Genealogy and Research.
-
Just to say Hello.
Having followed this forum for a long time I finally joined.
Have been a local resident for 15 years now having spent many happy holidays in the area in the sixties (what memories). In the "short time" I've lived here I've seen a lot of that History fall away. That's not a surprise as you can't live in the past. What is a suprise is the lack of any vision to replace it!
Word of explanation "a local nobody" or A.O.L is councilspeak for a resident who wants support for, or questions local activites.
Hence the plural "Those local nobodies" some people translate this as meaning voters.
-
Nice one A.L.N.
Welcome to the Forum.

Hi, I discovered this forum last night as my mum is a family history fanatic (I think she plans to join soon too) In the photos section, I met my Great Taid and saw my Great Aunt as a little girl, fabulous, looking forward to trawling through more. I'm not a Llanduno girl but my Grandad was deeply rooted in the town ( though he quife liked Mold for a beer as long as it was Ansells Ale!)

Nice to have you on board, lizcj.

LLandudno has a special place in my heart and memories. Me and my wife visited countless times over the years. Unfortunately my wife passed away 3 years ago, but the memories remain. Looking forward to being a part of what looks to be a great community. Cheers.

Hello
-
We plan to become residents in the next year or so, but I've loved Llandudno and the whole area since a school trip many years ago. We subsequently had several family holidays. Now that we largely live on a narrowboat based near to Nantwich, my wife regularly agrees to us having a "fix" of Llandudno.
-
Hello

Hi, Josh.
-
hello! Jonathan here, I'm filming something next week in the Llandudno area and had a visit this week. I was impressed in what a well presented destination it is, so look forward to coming back!

Hello everyone
I am new to the forum. Born in Colwyn Bay in 1948, I lived in Mill Street, Llanddulas and attended Llanddulas school and St Joseph's in Colwyn Bay. In about 1955 I moved with my family to Worcestershire where I still live
My father was Bertie Davies born in Carnarvon in 1923. One of Dad's sisters was Jane Elizabeth Davies, who I believe married Edward Goodey Jones. Their son is my cousin. Another of Dad's sisters is still alive and living in Old Colwyn.
I have been away from the area for 60 years so would be very interested to know if anyone has any information about members of my family. Many thanks.
Chris Wynne-Davies
-
Hi. W. Welcome and ££$.... $good$
-
If he's the same Edward Goodey Jones then he was a very well known local character. He was known as Ted Yr Ogof on account of the fact that his ancestors lived in a cave on the Great Orme.
Ted was a lovely guy and sadly died on the promenade in Llandudno at an early age and there is a memorial to him near the spot where he died. His son, Ed Jones is actually a forum member on here and there is plenty of info about the family in Geneology and Research on here. Have a look under the title "Jones Family" and I think there is more info under Miriam Yr Ogof too
-
Thanks very much. I'll follow this up. Best wishes.
Chris
-
Chris: you only need to make a post once anywhere in here, for everyone to see it. I've deleted the other two duplicate posts you made and merged this one into the Welcome topic. Thanks.
-
Hi, I'm very sorry it's taken such a long time to introduce myself. I didn't have a computer for a while and don't have much spare time. I've finally looked through the forum and found it really interesting, I've been reading things out to my mum who is not of good health and she always has a comment to make as she is a local historian. I've been a member for a while but jumped straight into a couple of your postings as I noticed members talking about my mum's family. Her family are mostly from Conwy, LLandudno and LLangwstenin. I am trying to do my family tree but always get stuck as my mother's maternal and paternal families have the same names and lived next to each other on the Great Orme, Llandudno and Conwy, so I get them mixed up. The forum has really been a great help. By the way Edward Goodey Jones was my mum's uncle, her mothers brother. Many thanks Elizabeth :)
-
I've been a bit slack in not introducing myself, so I'd better make up for it! I was born in Bangor, grew up until the age of 7 in Penrhynside and then moved to Llandudno. I have now been a resident of beautiful Tasmania for the past 10 years, but the previous 30 were spent in Brisbane, in sunny Queensland. Huh, sunny it might be, but they don't warn you about the humidity! Our bit of Tassie enjoys a very Llandudno-like climate, where winds feature very prominently! 8) But when it is good, it is very, very good!
I've been piecing together our Family Tree since I was a teenager, but thankfully, the internet has made things so much easier (not to mention cheaper!) now. Except when the winds get so blustery it blows the typeface off the dratted keyboard!! :rage:
I went to Bodafon and John Bright's (when it was still a Grammar school!) but I give the greatest credit to Mr Stanley Mason, our Headmaster at Bodafon, for instilling a love of learning that has never left me. That man was a brilliant teacher, way ahead of his time.
As can be gathered from the above, I'm no spring chook, having been born a century ago - well last century anyway! But you know what they say, oldies have the best memories!
I have just come into some amazing photos of days of yore and I'm making concerted efforts to find out more about the folk in them - so expect to see a few more in the weeks ahead! Hopefully someone out there can help uncover their names so we can remember them properly!
Oops! Should this have been posted here? :-[ Hopefully Ian or Dave could re-position me as appropriate?
-
I believe that Stanley Mason was the last headmaster to live in the school house next to the school. His son Alwyn, a friend of mine was teling me about living in the school house when he was a young boy.
Bodafon School still has a good reputation for education and what a superb view of the town from the school playground. The old Victorian letterbox is still in the wall of the school house as it was when you were there.
The school house is now in private ownership after being sold by Mostyn Estates in 1990
-
I thought all the Mason boys had names starting with K?! Keith was in my year at Bodafon. We used to go for Nature Rambles and played cricket up on the mountain past Pant-y-Wenol. There was no stupid PC business in those days, both girls and boys bowled and batted. Once when we were playing cricket in the boys' yard, I went in to bat and Mr Mason bowled a very high ball which sailed straight over my head and landed firmly on the bails! Out for a duck, I was - but I've never seem such exquisitely timed perfection! If only the Australian cricket team could have played like that, they'd be bringing the Ashes back - instead of bringing their reputations back in ashes!! L0L
Thanks for the lovely photo - brought a lump to my throat it did!
-
I only know Alwyn and didn't realise the Bodafon connection until he mentioned his father and his time living in the school house. Alwyn must be in his late 50's but I'm not sure of his exact age.
-
I remember Dr Kevin Mason. A museum professional, became Assistant Director for North Wales of the former Council of Museums in Wales. He subsequently became director of the Bodelwyddan Castle Trust. As far as I know he is still there.
-
Hey, thanks for the approval, this is going to be really useful to me and i'm hoping i'll be able to contribute too :D
-
I thought all the Mason boys had names starting with K?! Keith was in my year at Bodafon.
i saw Alwyn about 2 weeks ago when he was working in the area. Alwyn said that there were five brothers, Keith, Kevin, Alwyn and Adrian but I've forgotten the name of the 5th one!
-
Hi - I have just joined the forum as I am hoping to retire to Llandudno. I am useless on computer so don't know how I will fare on the site. I typed in "retiring" on the search box and 'simple machines' keep coming up and not sure what that is about. Can you point me in the direction of people who have retired to Llandudno so I can read their views. Thanks so much

Welcome to the forum Monica, Llandudno is a beautiful place to live in and I'm sure that you'll enjoy it here when you retire.
Have a look at "Ask a local" and then scroll down to "Thinking of moving to the area" and you may get some info there.
I'm useless on the computer too but the Admins here Ian and DaveR will help you with any problems as will the other forum members who are good with IT
-
I'm so pleased to be here. I lived in Bryn Pydew for about 30 years with a small gap in the middle. My children all had some of their growing up years there and my youngest son was born in Old Swan. I worked at Llandudno and Conwy hospitals. I loved walks around Pydew especially Bodysgallen woods. I loved days walking in Snowdonia. I now live in dead flat Norfolk hence the 'hiraeth!'
-
The only thing I remember about Mr Mason, headmaster of Bodafon was feeling aggrieved with him over a goal I thought our school had scored. I think it was initially awarded but after a debate between him and Mr Williams, my headmaster at Glanwydden, the ball's flight path was judged to be such that it would have gone over the crossbar - if we had such things...

Welcome to the forum Chris. I hope that you can find some information about your Grandma and if you post something under Genealogy and Research then someone may be able to help you.
We have the Conwy Archives in Llandudno and there may be something there that can help you to find out more.

Welcome ChrisArt.
I think I saw her outside the Boulevard nightclub last night.
She'd been thrown out for fighting, at least I think it was her?

Hello!
Met my wife in Llandudno a few years ago and we lived on Lloyd Street for a while. Now looking to move back as we love the area and think its ideal to bring our two young children up. Any views on house prices or schools welcome. If you have a 4 bed semi/detached that doesnt need much work then get in touch.
Thanks, Stuart
-
Hello three towners,
I joined up a couple of days ago to do some reading on your forum which is full of useful info. We are contemplating accepting a job in Deganwy which would likely see us looking to settle in Llandudno. Looks like a fantastic area with a lot to offer, will have to me make a decision on our future in the next week or so. I might start a separate thread on the area with some questions rather than clutter this welcome thread.
Cheers all,
Simon

this looks good, I am also a foodie and into heritage and traditional recipes and also 'peasant food'! :)

Hello, just set up this account to keep people informed of upcoming concerts etc. for the Conwy Town Orchestra. Previously known as the Conwy Ensemble we changed our name this year after being adopted by Conwy Town Council.
The first concert under our new name is coming up on the 22nd July. We'll post more details in the correct section.

Hello and welcome, look forward to hearing more details..... $good$

Hello!

Hello Ian and Dave, just a thought. On entering the sie ou see a picture of Colwyn Bays pier. now long gone.
Maybe a change is necessary? Mike

That's the blog, Mike; not the forum. But I take your point.

Hi new member. I came across this site while looking at old haunts on google earth. Quite interesting to see a lot of great information many of which is very connected with my life good or bad. A lot of posts are very dated and such a shame they have gone no further as there is so much to add. A lot of people on here have breathed the same air many times in this small town and reading the stories makes me smile. I will try and contribute now and then however life has moved on for some of us. Thanks for the time.
-
Not a new member but can some one point me in the right direction on how to change my forum password please?
-
Hi Bellringer.
I am on an iPad.
If I log out and log back in again, my iPad immediately gives me an option to change my password.
-
Thank you Bri.
I too am on an IPad but trying what you say, I cannot see any option coming up. Maybe I am missing something obvious.
There is an option “Forgotten your password?” but I know my password and it works ok.
-
I can change it for you, then send you a new password which you can then alter in your profile. Message me if you want me to do that.
-
Thanks Ian, I may well do what you say.
-
I've also messaged you.
