But seriously though...for a minute... I do posess a bayonet, or short sword, from 1871,  the Franco-Prussian war I believe.

Beautifully engraved, ... one of a pair we found as kids in the loft of our first house. (a Victorian Terrace)

My brother flogged his at a car boot sale 20 years ago for about £15.   I've always kept mine in safe keeping.

Mike, if know about watches, how easy and how expensive would it be to get a new glass for my Taids old pocket watch that got accidentally broken?

Simple job.
But depending on size, type  and material price will vary.
If you wish, I will PM you my details and you can bring it to me to look at.
I am sure it can be replaced

oh, all right then, how do you know it's 1871, we need a pic of the engraving as proof it is dated  :P

I've got a cavalry sword in my loft, about 4ft long, going a bit rusty, no idea how old it is, unfortunately the sheath is a bit bent and the sword will only go half way in.
Also got loads of shell cases, some have been made into ornaments, a hand grenade devoid of contents, a german helmet (no liner) and a couple of medals (not won by me)

Plenty of people use the word Taid in the Midlands and most of them with no Welsh connection whatsoever.  In fact I first came across the word when I lived in Tamworth and certainly many of our friends used it.    >>>

Just thought i'd post a pic of one of my deactivated rifles , this is what most of our grandparents would have been issued with in ww1 and 2 , this example is manufactured by BSA (yep the bike guys too) in 1918 , it is a SMLE (short magazine lee enfield) or " SMELLIE "  as it was affectionately known by the tommies , I was in talks with the late Geraint Morgan about there being an arsenal of these weapons on madoc st. , possibly the old spicer travel shop? , any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Opposite Marble Arch in Madoc street, there's a small charity shop - that was where the Home Guard kept their arsenal of .303 rifles.

I'm came across this notice when I was looking for some thing else and never knew anything about the plane.  It's about the site of an American World War II aircraft which crashed in Gwynedd and could be protected following a grant of more than £7,500.

The remains of the Lockheed P-38F Lightning, buried in sand at Harlech beach, is currently vulnerable to storm damage and trophy hunting

From the BBC Link http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-34403199 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-34403199)

"£7,500 grant to protect Gwynedd site of crashed WWII aircraft" because according to them "The WWII aircraft is the only known one of its type in the world still surviving substantially intact"

Well before they spend the money perhaps they should do a little more research https://youtu.be/p26NYiRXm2s (https://youtu.be/p26NYiRXm2s) as N25Y is a much better example and has already had enough money spent keeping it in full airworth condition.  &shake&

I have an interest in the history of Bomber Command WWll,  my father served in 49th sqd. and 617sqd. so when I found a dilapidated print in a junk shop in CYD, I could not leave it, it had to be rescued, it was a mess, but I bought it for a few pounds, and gave it to the Victoria framers to do their best, and frame it whatever the condition, they did a great job.

I am now the proud owner of a signed Robert Taylor "Memorial Flight" print, with the additional signatures of other famous flyers of that time..... Johnnie Johnson, Leonard Cheshire VC, Group Captain Peter Townsend.

Info.....The Memorial Flight formed in 1957, the RAF’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight remains one of the world’s great ‘flying museums’, a proud tribute to Britain’s military aviation heritage. As well as the five Spitfires and two Hurricanes, the Flight contains one of only two airworthy Lancasters in the world. Although numerous photographs have been taken of the Memorial Flight, few artists have succeeded in capturing the ‘essence’ of the three most important World War II aircraft as Robert Taylor has achieved with this wonderfully evocative portrayal of the Memorial Flight flying in formation over the English Channel, the late afternoon sun glinting on the sea below.

This news could affect their appearance the Rhyl Airshow .

Engine issue grounds Battle of Britain Memorial Flight planes.
Most of the historic aircraft that make up the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) have been grounded due to an engine issue.
A Lancaster bomber, two Hurricanes and three Spitfire planes are all affected by the problem.
The BBMF has three other Spitfires with different engines which are currently unavailable for other reasons.

SteveH sadly the problem is twofold , The Mechanical problem, though not confirmed by BBMF is likely the skew gears and magnetos and only affects the Merlins , a well known problem even back in the day ! they found the problem in the Hurricane initially and grounded the Merlins in addition to the already grounded Griffon Spitfire and Dakota which is out all season now . The mechanical fix is a very straightforward job but the second part is more worrying , This could turn into a legal mess as there are long standing problems with certain overhaul companies and parts suppliers , if that's the case and I hope not, they won't touch the engines !
they could be looking into which engines are affected the Rolls or Packard made Merls or both ? I would safely assume they know the whole situation though ! hope it gets resolved !

And it's a nice bit of family history to have your Grandfathers records, especially for the RFC .

Today is the 100 anniversary of the RAF.           $good$

" In our 100th year, we will commemorate those who have gone before, thank our service men and women and inspire the next generation so that together, we can continue to help shape our world for the next 100 years and beyond #RAF100"

https://twitter.com/RoyalAirForce?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor (https://twitter.com/RoyalAirForce?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor)

Bit of trivia.....

The Royal Air Force has become synonymous with its distinctive blue uniforms, but that was not always the case.
In fact, the RAF has just one particular British textiles manufacturer to thank for starting a 100-year-old tradition.

In 1918 the RAF was formed through the merging of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Naval Air Service.

But the service needed a fittingly new uniform, so cloth makers Hainsworth was approached.

Julie Greenough, marketing manager at Hainsworth, said the RAF wanted uniforms that were different to the other services.
"We were lucky at the time because we actually had a warehouse full of blue-grey material that had been woven for the Tsar of Russia for his Cossack trousers.
"But we were unable to deliver it because war broke out in Russia and we had a warehouse full of this blue-grey material that we couldn't use and we didn't have a source for "Then the RAF came at exactly the same time and the salesman thought 'RAF and blue' - they have taken that fabric since and they still take it for their ceremonial uniforms now."

Made from 100% pure wool, the weight of and the process of achieving the blue colour of the material is a closely guarded secret.

Sad to read about RAF Scampton, however could be good news for RAF Valley,  Anglesey

The home of the Red Arrows air display team is to be sold off, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed.
RAF Scampton, which was also home to 617 Squadron as they prepared for the Dambusters mission in World War Two, has housed the Red Arrows since 2000.   https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-44936234 (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-44936234)

There is a possibility, of a sighting over the local area.

The RAF Tornado farewell flypast timetable has been released - here's what time and where to see it.

It will pass several RAF bases across the county with special significance to the life of the aircraft, including RAF Valley, Anglesey,  ensuring weather conditions are settled enough.

1.30pm - 1.45pm: RAF Shawbury - DECA Sealand

1.45 - 2pm: RAF Valley

Good try, Bri.  I thought it might have been cancelled, but on checking the Pioneer, I don't think they came close to us........

HUNDREDS of plane spotters headed to Anglesey in their droves to see RAF Tornado jets final flypast.
Three Tornado GR4 planes soared above RAF Valley in Anglesey this afternoon.

"The turn out was great. I would say about a thousand people turned out for this one chance to see the planes.
People clapped and cheered when it flew over."
The three-ship formation crossed the RAF Valley MATZ (Military Air Traffic Zone) at 500 ft, South to North.

The RAF confirmed earlier this month that after almost 40 years serving the UK on military operations across the world, its Tornado jets are returning home for the last time.

First entering service in 1979, the fast jets have been used in operations across the world, most recently bombarding Daesh to push the terrorist group back through Syria and Iraq.

The DP has some comments ..........A few disappointed photographers & other folks in the sand dunes around RAF Valley this afternoon watching the #tornadoflypast - they were so high, no lap of honour; bit of an anti-climax, and it was soooo cold! Ah well, win some, lose some. #TornadoFarewell #Anglesey

A LLANDUDNO author is making an appeal for anecdotes, reminiscences and photographs to complete a book he is writing on Conwy borough during World War 2.

Adrian Hughes, who runs the town’s Home Front Museum, has been preparing the book for some time, and in particular has been unable to unearth any photographs of the VE and VJ celebrations.

He said: “I wrote a book in 2017 about the borough of Conwy in World War 1 and that raised more than £1,500 for the poppy appeal and Conwy Citizens Advice Bureau. Both these charities will again benefit from this new book as all monies will be donated to them.

Adrian said: “In all my research I have failed to find a single image of VE or VJ Day celebrations but I am aware there were lots of street parties and I really need some to help bring the book to a natural conclusion.”

He added: “I am also really keen to talk to anyone who has recollections of Conwy, Deganwy and Llandudno Junction during the Second World War, in particularly regarding Ratcliffe Engineering, the factory that made Beaufighter and Halifax parts in Llandudno Junction, it later became the Hotpoint factory.  ref Pioneer

I wish I could help Adrian in his research but I was born after the end of the Second World War.      I know that my mother worked in a factory for Ratcliffe Engineering but I've got a vague memory that she worked in South Wales although she lived in Llandudno at the time.
I can never remember her saying anything about Mochdre though but as kids you don't always take too much notice of things.

A lady called Grace sent the photo to my mother and on the reverse of the photo is a lovely note to my mother written in the form of a poem.
I think that this photo was from my mother's time in S Wales but I can't produce the photo on to my computer as the printer isn't working at present.

RAF Valley said: "Great to see the United States Marine Corps [USMC] here at Valley, in the form of two Ospreys from VMM-261, a USMC Medium Lift Tiltrotor squadron normally based out of New River, North Carolina.

The aircraft are occasionally seen in the skies of North Wales, with US military personnel known to use them while training in the Mach Loop - an area used for low-flying training

The Mach Loop and RAF Valley are getting a lot of coverage in the Fighter Pilot: an ITV documentary The Real Top Gun is a three-part series which follows a trio of fighter pilot recruits as they attempt to become the best of the best - to be selected to fly the RAF’s brand new F35 Lightning jet.

PHOTOGRAPHS of Llandudno servicemen killed in the First and Second World Wars will be projected onto the wall of the town’s Marks and Spencer store.

This extends last year’s successful project which was limited to men of the First World War, and an appeal has been launched for more photographs.

The project is being organised by Adrian Hughes of the Home Front Museum in conjunction with the Llandudno branch of the Royal British Legion.

RAF Valley releases statement over complaints about flight training during the coronavirus lockdown
Military chiefs explain why pilots from the Anglesey base must to continue to fly Hawk and Texan training aircraft over North Wales skies.

Military chiefs at RAF Valley have released a statement explaining why pilots need to carry out their flight training over North Wales during the coronavirus lockdown.

The good weather during April meant they were clearly seen and heard and prompted locals to ask politicians why the the Royal Air Force was continuing to carry out flight training during the Covid-19 lockdown.

"Following the Prime Minister's announcement on 23 March there was a short pause in flying training to assess the impact of COVID-19.
"Essential flying training at RAF Valley on the Hawk aircraft recommenced on 31 March and on the Texan aircraft on 14 April.
"The delivery of all training will remain under constant review as the situation changes."

The plane left RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire this morning before flying past North Wales and up to Scotland.  ref DP

It carried out a number of exercises around Prestwick Airport before returning south.

The plane then carried out a number of exercises focusing on Liverpool John Lennon Airport, which saw the aircraft circle over Liverpool, the Wirral and the North Wales coast.

The impressive aircraft, which entered operational service in 2014, has the ability to carry a 37-tonne payload and can also operate at altitudes of 40,000ft.

The last resting place of an Anglesey-built fast raiding vessel featured in a 1951 film has been pinpointed by sonar in a new survey by experts at Bangor University.

Motor Torpedo Boat (MTB) 539 was designed and built on the Menai Straits 75 years ago. It could travel at almost 50mph driven by three large Packard V-12 petrol engines.

It was 75 feet long and carried twin torpedo tubes on each side and an array of heavy machine guns and it was the UK’s first all-aluminium Royal Navy boat.

The wreck has been surveyed using multibeam sonar by a team from Bangor University’s School of Ocean Sciences who are mapping the seabed off the coast of Wales as part of their ongoing research and will feature in the innovative O Dan y Dŵr – Hidden Seascapes of Wales project which features a range of underwater sites around the Welsh coast.

Well Llandudno just had a Red Arrows fly past, complete with coloured smoke, and looks like they are heading home to Scampton, along the coast ..                            stock photo, came over to fast

I did not realise yesterdays flypast was in honor of a local hero...............

Red Arrows perform breathtaking flypast for a North Wales Battle of Britain hero
The acrobatic display team saluted Flt Lt Glyn Griffiths who shot down six German aircraft during the autumn of 1940, two of them in one day.

The Red Arrows paid a special tribute to a North Wales war hero by performing a flypast over his home town.
Flight Lieutenant Glyn Griffiths DFM, from Llandudno was a Hurricane pilot in the Battle of Britain.

"Born in 1918 in the town he worked at Llandudno Urban District Council’ s gas department before joining the RAF just before the war.

A sergeant during the Battle of Britain, flying with 17 Squadron, Glyn was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM). The London Gazette of November 1940 announced the award of his DFM: "This airman has shown splendid courage and initiative in his attacks against the enemy. He has destroyed at least six of their aircraft, two of which were shot down in one day’".

The Mayor of Llandudno, Cllr Angie O’Grady said: “We were thrilled and honoured to see the Red Arrows in the skies above Llandudno today.

"Battle of Britain pilot Flight Lieutenant Glyn Griffiths is one of the town’s most famous sons and it was very poignant for us to see the fighter pilots of today’s RAF fly over the town to remember one of their own.

"We are very grateful to the RAF for arranging this very special flypast. “

Griffiths had not recovered from his injuries before the war ended. He retired from the RAF in 1946 as a Flight Lieutenant and died in 1983.

Two NATO warships have been spotted off the coast of North Wales ahead of a major two-week exercise.

One of the ships has stopped close to the Gwynt y Môr wind farm, while the second is close to the Conwy Platform, according to data from website marinetraffic.com.

Officials were unable to confirm the reason for the ships' appearance off the coast, but it is understood it is linked to a major exercise getting underway this month.

Exercise Strike Warrior, which takes place off Scotland, will involve more than 20 warships, three submarines and 150 aircraft from 11 nations.

It will be the UK Carrier Strike Group's "largest and most demanding exercise" so far before it heads out on operational deployment to the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean and Asia Pacific, according to the Royal Navy.

I thought I was looking at the Balmoral for a minute.............

SCIENTISTS at Bangor University have helped identify a shipwreck in the middle of the Southern Irish Sea, previously thought to be that of a submarine, as the minesweeper, HMS Mercury.

Originally built as a Clyde-based ferry, HMS Mercury was requisitioned by the Admiralty in 1939 to serve as minesweeper.

It sank in 1940 after being damaged by a mine that it was attempting to clear and was reported lost off Southern Ireland.

BRANCH members gathered together to mark Merchant Navy Day in Llandudno.

North Wales Merchant Navy Association branch members were joined by their wives and two representatives from each of the RNLI and HM Coastal Watch on September 3.

Despite a chill wind, members congregated from about 10.30am, ready to start the memorial on time at 11am.

Mike Ridehalgh, chairman, said: "We give thanks to the local Harbour Master’s office which had kindly arranged for our easy access to the memorial for wreath laying and photographic purposes and a Red Duster was flying high and proudly close by.

"Our wreath was laid with due solemnity followed by a few words.

"The Poem ‘Heroes’ by David Pritchard was read and appreciated by all for its simple description of seafarers and what they did and continue to do for our community and country.

My old Boss Alan Bristow OBE, FRAeS as a young 3rd Officer, was sunk 5 times before he had enough and technically deserted the Merchant Navy, to join the Royal Navy. Very fortunately they recognised his potential and he became one of the first Helicopter Pilots. His legacy can be seen flying over North Wales almost every day.

A PILOT from Llandudno who shot down six planes in the Battle of Britain became a “pin-up boy” for the town, according to a historian.

Glyn Griffiths, son of a proprietor of Llandudno’s West End Café that is now Tiffany’s, was the first person from Llandudno to be decorated for bravery after receiving the Distinguished Flying Medal from George VI in March 1941, following his role in the major air battle between the RAF and Luftwaffe.

After leaving John Bright County School and taking a job with Llandudno Urban District Council’s gas department, he volunteered to join the RAF before the war in 1937, along with three people around the same age from the school, two of whom were killed in the war – but Glyn would survive to tell the story of his courage, which was used by recruiting officers to encourage others in Llandudno to sign up.

Title: Remembrance Day 2021....Today
Post by: SteveH on November 11, 2021, 10:23:15 am
Remembrance Day (Armistice Day) this year will fall on Thursday, November 11. Remembrance Sunday falls on November 14.

Services and parades are held across the country to remember and honour those who lost their lives in World War 1 and following conflicts.

As tradition, a two-minute silence is observed at 11am.

The first 2-minute silence in the UK was observed on November 11, 1919, celebrating the day the war ended one year prior.

What is the significance of 11am?
11am marks the time agreements were made that ended the first World War. The silence is held at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month.

TOWNS across Conwy will fall silent this week to remember British soldiers who have died while serving their country.

Ceremonies are being held at town memorials on Remembrance Sunday to mark the signing of the Armistice and to show respect to the soldiers who fought and died during the First and Second World Wars, as well as later conflicts.

During this period of remembrance, I thought Forum members may be interested in the attached publications but may ask, “Why is SAJ, aka “the Craig y Don Kid” posting a piece relating to Irlam and Cadishead?” All will become clear. Pete Thomas, co-author is related to me on my maternal line, roots in Lancashire/Yorkshire, and not via my Llandudno Thomases. Included in the list of those who served and fell is Charles Roberts, the son of my 2xgreat-grandfather, Hamblet Roberts of Cadishead. It was whilst searching the internet for information relating to him that I came across Pete Thomas’s book and was able to contact him and exchange further family history information.

What further interested me was that a number of the men whose details are recorded have roots in North Wales including another Charles Roberts, born Llandudno, 1876, occupation baker. He served with the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. I also noted William Roberts, born Beaumaris and Matthew Robinson, born Flint. I haven’t explored all the names yet (it is a mighty tome) but if anyone would like me to look up a name, I’m happy to do so.  Further post to follow with a link to Colwyn Bay.

As mentioned in my previous post, my great uncle, Charles Roberts served in WWI and was killed in action on 18th May, 1918 during a trench raid by his company on Trench Hilda, near Hulluch, France.

His brothers, Frank, Ernest and Edwin also served and returned home at the cessation of hostilities. I learned that my grandfather, George who served in the Mercantile Marine was in 1916 at Gallipoli where it appears that his ship was involved in refuelling and possibly evacuation of troops.

Charles’ sister, Millicent was a Voluntary Aid Detachment Nurse based at Glan y Don Hall, Colwyn Bay and I have attached copies of postcards sent to her by her brothers, Charles and Frank during her time there. I shall post a further more poignant one separately. Millicent is standing at the left of the group photo.

The attached card postmarked London, 11th July, 1917 and sent by Charles to his sister, Millie mentions that he hadn’t been able to get home to see baby. This refers to his son, also named Charles, born 28 April, 1917 and sadly, it seems that he never did have the opportunity to do so.

Post by: SteveH on November 13, 2021, 09:45:38 am
This weekend will mark Remembrance Sunday in a week when the nation comes together to remember the sacrifices of our servicemen and women.

The day follows Remembrance Day (Armistice Day) on Thursday (November 11) which marks the end World War 1.

Remembrance Sunday falls on the second Sunday of November which this week falls on Sunday, November 14.

Services and parades are held across the country to remember and honour those who lost their lives in World War 1 and following conflicts.

As tradition, a two-minute silence is observed at 11am.

The first 2-minute silence in the UK was observed on November 11, 1919, celebrating the day the war ended one year prior.

I spotted Billy Baxter, Llandudno's Town Crier at the Cenotaph parade this morning, ready to lay his wreath, an emotional morning, it was good to see Billy made it to London.

Billy is a former Staff Sergeant who served in the Royal Horse Artillery for almost 21 years, before losing his sight whilst serving in Bosnia in 1997.  He moved to Llandudno to work for Blind Veterans UK where he is the Rehabilitation and Training Liaison Officer.

Billy is married to Karen and they have 3 grown up children and 4 grandchildren. He has many interests including horse riding, skiing, rock climbing, and sea fishing.  He is holder of the blind solo motorcycle land speed record and has appeared on Top Gear driving a reasonably priced car.  He also works at Bodelwyddan castle working with the paranormal investigation team, taking visitors around on guided tours.

Billy said of his appointment “I am so proud to serve my country and proud to serve Llandudno which has given me a role I am honoured to perform.  I love people and making them smile”.  He is the only blind Town Crier in Europe and the second in UK history, the last being Joseph Howarth from Oldham, who was blind from birth and was in post between 1820-1860.

If you see Billy on one of his regular walks around the town, please say hello.

Sq Ldr George "Johnny" Johnson, who lives in Bristol, was a bomb-aimer during the daring operation.

Mr Johnson was involved in the raid that targeted dams in the Ruhr Valley in Germany's industrial heartland, releasing huge quantities of water into areas used by Germany for war production.

On 16 and 17 May 1943, a total of 133 Allied aircrew took part in the pivotal attack aboard 19 Lancaster bombers, carrying Barnes Wallis' specially-adapted bombs - that looked like "glorified dustbins", according to Mr Johnson - led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson.

My father was part of this famous squadron, and I have a picture of the Memorial Flight, signed by Johnny.

Military veterans in the Colwyn Bay region have further opportunity to socialise with like-minded individuals after two Armed Forces charities teamed up to provide an afternoon of activity on the last Wednesday of each month.

The new partnership between Help for Heroes and Woody’s Lodge launches on Wednesday, 23 February, with an hour’s swimming at Colwyn Leisure Centre (13:30-14:30), after an hour’s getting-to-know-you session (12:15-13:15) over a ‘cuppa’ at Woody’s Lodge, in Eirias Park.

Sarah Hattle, Help for Heroes’ Project Case Manager for North and Mid Wales, explained: “This activity is open to both Help for Heroes and Woody’s Lodge veterans and we are hoping it is the first of several joint initiatives the charities will be able to undertake with the support of the local community.

“Many veterans in the region are likely to live in areas where they are far removed from their contemporaries, so we’re looking to introduce further activities at easily accessible venues to enable them to meet up, chat, enjoy each other’s company and use sports activity as a recovery tool.”

To participate either contact Woody’s Lodge Colwyn Bay or, for existing Help for Heroes’ beneficiaries, sign up via the Just Go system.

Woody’s Lodge is a social hub – in Colwyn Bay, Llandysul, and Barry – which guides veterans to the help and support they need to re-engage with their families and communities.

The Navy are retiring their small fleet of Hawk jets this year

A farewell flight around Britain by Royal Navy jets will include a flypast over RAF Valley. Four Hawk T.1 training aircraft will take part in the exercise on Friday, March 18.

The Navy are retiring their small fleet of Hawk aircraft this year. A spokesman for Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose said the four jets from 736 Naval Air Squadron will fly from Cornwall to Prestwick, Scotland on Thursday and back again the following day.

The aircraft are due to take off from Prestwick at 11am on Friday and carry out a flypast at RAF Valley at about 11.25am. The formation will continue to the firing range at Pembrey near Llanelli before overflying Newquay and arriving back at Culdrose shortly after midday.

The war memorials at Llandudno and Penrhynside are to receive grants of £11,540 and £3,180 respectively, from War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme.

The funding will enable conservation works including repointing to areas of failed or inappropriate mortar, localised conservation cleaning, and associated repairs to be undertaken.

The works have been commissioned by Llandudno Town Council, which is providing the remainder of the funding for the project, and are due to commence on March 28.

Taking off from an RAF station in Fairford at 4pm, the planes will take just 25 minutes to reach the Isle of Man, so anyone hoping to get a glance will have to be quick off the mark.

Their way to the island they will be passing over a number of locations across Powys, Shropshire and North Wales, with Capel Curig, the Menai Strait, and Bangor on the route map.

THE Red Arrows pilot whose aircraft was struck by a seagull during a display at the Rhyl Air Show has described the incident as the most serious he?s experienced in his career.

Wales is joining the rest of the UK in marking Armistice Day.

Friday is the 104th national commemoration since the end of World War One in 1918.

Every year a two-minute silence is held at 11:00GMT - the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month - and events to mark the occasion will take place across Wales, to remember those who lost their lives in war and conflict.

It will also mark 40 years since the end of the Falklands War in 1982.

The last surviving Dambuster Squad Leader George Leonard Johnny Johnson, has died aged 101.

The RAF veteran was the last surviving original member of the RAF 617 Squadron?s famous Dambusters raid of 1943.

Johnson died peacefully at his care home in Westbury on Trym in Bristol on Wednesday night, surrounded by his family.

Sharing the news of his passing, his granddaughter, Jenny Sextone, said his family were with him and added "We would appreciate your respect for our privacy in this family time".

In January 2019, Johnson became the last survivor of the original flying members of 617 Squadron following the death of his wartime colleague Fred Sutherland.

In 2017, Johnson was made an MBE after his long-running campaign which was supported by celebrities.

Just a few weeks ago on November 25, 2022, Johnson celebrated his 101st birthday.

PS
A sad passing, but a long life, as some may know my father served in 617 Squadron, and as a reminder of both, I have a print of the Memorial Flight signed by Johnny and a few other famous names from that time.

ABERCONWY MP, Robin Millar, is urging veterans to have their say by participating in the UK Government?s first UK-wide survey for ex-servicemen and women and their families.

In the next 10 weeks, veterans across throughout the United Kingdom can complete the survey that seeks to identify how veterans? services can be improved in the future.

Funded and commissioned by the Office of Veterans? Affairs, this is the first exercise to collect feedback from the entire veteran community across the UK.

This survey, in collaboration with the Office for National Statistics (ONS), will ask veterans to describe their experiences of being a veteran and of using government services.

This will ensure that the government can adapt services to better meet the needs of veterans and their families.

The survey can be completed online.

What new Red Arrows could look like as defence chiefs sign 9million deal
Sources say a light military aircraft being developed could be the successor to the famous Hawk jet - avoiding the potential embarrassment of having to shop abroad for a new plane

Defence chiefs have signed a 9million deal paving the way for a replacement plane for the Red Arrows.

Ministers are due to begin shopping for new aircraft for the famous display team next year  seven years before the Hawks they currently use are retired from service.

The Mirror revealed in July 2021 how the air force's Aerobatic Display Team  the formal name for the Red Arrows - could be forced to fly foreign planes for the first time.

But now the MoD has signed a contract with Bristol-based Aeralis for digital engineering support services? and to access information from its hi-tech system - including data which will help the firm produce a family of light military aircraft.    $good$

The Mirror understands the modular aircraft will all have the same fuselage and cockpits, but the noses, wings and tails will be different depending on what the aircraft is used for - and whether they have a pilot or are flown remotely.

Stunning images show the largest Royal Navy ship ever built visiting North Wales. The HMS Queen Elizabeth was in the waters off Anglesey on Thursday February 2 and had a sea rendezvous with aircraft from RAF Valley.

The 3.1 billion aircraft carrier was built alongside its twin the HMS Prince of Wales in a project costing more than 6 billion, and they are the Royal Navy's first aircraft carriers to be built since HMS Ark Royal was scrapped in 2010.

The ship weighs in at 65,000 tonnes and has a flight deck four acres long, which is enough space for nearly three football pitches. It's expected to be in service for the next 50 years after becoming fully operational in 2021.

We are advised by our good friend Jack Hawkins that the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight plan to commemorate the 80th Anniversary of Op Chastise (Dambusters Raid) on the 16th May.

Attached are the details and a map of the proposed flight plan with the expected time over Fiskerton at 20.00 hrs.

It is hoped that some of our membership will be able to support this fantastic effort should you live within reasonable distance of the attached schedule of airfields.

There is a reference to the Lancaster flying over the RAF Museum Hendon and if that remains part of the schedule I will endeavour to find out the time and advise members who may live around the London area.

As I said, I'm sure it will be a wonderful tribute to all those who served with Bomber Command and I hope everyone who can visit an airfield will have a really enjoyable evening.

The only remaining airworthy Lancaster bomber in the UK took to the skies on Tuesday to mark the 80th anniversary of the Dambusters raid.
The plane, one of only two Lancasters still in operation, flew over former air bases in Lincolnshire on the anniversary of the mission to attack German dams on 1943.

Part of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF), plane PA474 took off from its base at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire for a flypast over the RAF Museum at Hendon, London.

Wonder what the route is from Cosgrove to Valley, will it be down the Conwy Valley as it often flies that way ... if you stand on the top terrace at Bodnant you are virtually inline with the pilot - it's at 270ft!

I am there tomorrow so will have to keep an eye on the time!

What a sad emotional day, seeing these lovely majestic Hercules C-130s on their final flypast to mark their retirement that's 56 years of Service with the RAF... Feel free to share!!

Visiting all four nations of the UK, the Hercules C-130J is a tactical transport aircraft that has been in service since 1966.

Described by the RAF as the "backbone of UK operational tactical mobility tasks", Hercules's defensive system makes it ideal for operating in regions where there is a threat to aircraft.

Now after the Hercules took its last operational flight on June 4 with the 47 Squadron, takes a retirement flypast across the UK.

No.47 Squadron will be stood down and its Standard laid up for a period at College Hall Officers? Mess, RAF College Cranwell, until reformed.

This is a good article to read in conjunction with the last post about Broughton making the Wellington bomber in World War 2:

https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/wartime-factorys-bomber-builders-reunited-1897148?int_source=amp_continue_reading&int_medium=amp&int_campaign=continue_reading_button

Someone I once worked with, now deceased, told me that when this factory was built a number of men died by drowning as the land on which it stood was waterlogged. It is close to the River Dee estuary and used to flood at times. I haven't been able to verify this. The person concerned was old enough to know however.

RAF Valley march through Llandudno in Freedom parade

A PARADE travelled through Llandudno to mark the granting of the Honorary Freedom of the Town on the Royal Air Force Valley.

The honour had been granted by Llandudno Town Council.

The Freedom was granted in 1995 in recognition of the RAF Valley?s service to their country and this was the first parade held for a number of years.

The event, on Sunday, July 9, included a flypast by a Hawk aircraft over the Town Hall as the Parade formed up in Lloyd Street.

THREE massive Chinook helicopters will be operating from RAF Valley this summer.
The aircraft from 28 (Army Cooperation) Squadron, RAF Benson will be flying low over the region, including Eryri, during the period of July 24 to August 4.

It is to conduct essential training for crews during Exercise Kukri Dawn.

The exercise is the conclusion to the Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) training conducted by 28 (AC) Squadron, ensuring that crews are tested in challenging and unfamiliar environments prior to deployment onto front line squadrons.

Mach Loop: Aircraft you can see from Red Arrows to F-15s
The Mach Loop is one of the best places in the UK to watch and photograph military aircraft in action.

The Mach Loop, located around Dolgellau, in mid-Wales, is one of three Tactical Training Areas (TTA) used by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) for operational low-flying training by fast jets and Hercules transport aircraft.

Operational low flying is practised by fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters between 100 feet and 250 feet according to the MoD website meaning the high cliff faces around the Mach Loop give people an ideal vantage point to catch a glimpse of amazing aircraft doing their thing in scenic surroundings.

A ROYAL Naval ship was spotted sailing near to the Great Orme. ref pioneer

John Hume Snr spotted the boat on a misty Sunday morning (July 23) and shared the snap to the You know you are from LLandudno if

Residents were quick to identify it as HMS Tyne (P281).

John said: "I was on Marine drive on Sunday morning when I spotted a ship in the mist off Llandudno. I took a quick photo of it and then, using the zoom on my camera, I zoomed in on the ship to see if I could make out it's name. When I downloaded the shots I was able to clean up the photo and saw the letter and numbers on it's side which read P281.

HMS Tyne safeguards the UK?s fishing stocks. She is one of busiest vessels in the Royal Navy's Fleet and spends nine out of every 10 days of the year at sea.

North Wales' key role in helicopter pilot training

Huge low flying military helicopters have been spotted in north and mid Wales over the past week.

One enormous twin-rotor aircraft was even seen making an emergency landing in a field in Gwynedd - where it will have to be pulled out by a crane.

But why have giant RAF Chinook helicopters been seen in the skies?

It has been part of Operation Kukri Dawn, the final test for trainees who have spent the past three years learning how to fly what is the air force's aerial workhorse.

After spending a fortnight based at RAF Valley on Anglesey, the new pilots will now graduate - ready for action.

Huge cranes help move RAF Chinook which landed in field due to 'technical issues'
The military aircraft was flown out of the field on Friday

Huge cranes were brought in to help move an RAF Chinook helicopter forced to land in a North Wales field last week. The huge helicopter landed on a patch of land in the village of Arthog, near Fairbourne in Gwynedd on the evening of Thursday, July 28.

The 28 Squadron helicopter, normally based at RAF Benson in Wallingford, was flying out of RAF Valley on Anglesey as part of a training exercise when it experienced "technical issues," according to the Ministry of Defence (MOD). Engineers arrived on site to assess the problems on Friday.

Yesterday (Friday) after more activity around the aircraft, including two cranes brought in apparently assisting it onto mats, checks were performed, it was powered up and flew away from the scene, according to an eye-witness. The incident caused a flurry of excitement in the normally sleepy village - after some residents woke-up to find the gigantic Chinook parked-up just beyond their back gardens.

Post-War Europe - A family member recently presented me with a set of what we both initially believed to be vintage travel guides. It was only when I sat down to examine them more closely that I realised that they were something completely different and definitely more interesting. We agreed that the booklets were about the right size to fit the breast pocket of a serviceman?s tunic.

When we lived up by Lynn geirionydd in the 80s, we had a big scare one very dark night, the noise was unbelievable, we phoned the police in the end, to be told, just !  :o  a Chinooks training exercise.................

CHINOOK helicopters will be flying low over north Wales during the course of the next month.
Three helicopters will be operating from Anglesey-based RAF Valley as of this week and up until November 16.

This is in order to conduct 'essential training' for crews during Exercise KUKRI DAWN and a few other serials.

Although most of the flying will be during Anglesey-based RAF Valley?s normal operating hours (9am to 5pm), there is expected to also be some night flying serials involved.

The Great Escape: Welshman inspired Steve McQueen role

It is the part that cemented Steve McQueen in the pantheon of Hollywood cool.

But how many know the American icon's role as a daredevil POW in the 1963 World War Two film The Great Escape is supposedly based on a Welshman?

Ken Rees, from Anglesey, was the bomber pilot who fought back against his Nazi captors to break free of an infamous Polish prison camp.

That heroic effort celebrates its 80th anniversary this weekend.

Having joined the RAF in 1939 at a tender 18, Flt Lt Rees was shot down over Norway on a secret mine-laying mission three years later.
