Walks in North Wales / Re: Walking
« Last post by Hugo on April 14, 2024, 02:49:04 pm »
Yesterday Tellytubby and I met up for a short walk on the Great Orme.   I had planned a walk but because of parking restrictions on the lower slopes of the Great Orme we had to revert to a Plan B so I drove up to and parked in St Beuno's Road and we started the walk from there.
We walked further up St Beuno's Road until we came to  the public footpathe that takes you on to the Maes Y Fachrell Nature Reserve.    The views from up there are breathtaking but the light was poor with dark clouds hanging overhead and it was cold too.  So we heades over the reserve and you could see the mine shafts everywhere and could imagine how industrialised that area of the Orme was in the early 19th century.   It also made us think of the effort the old miners had to do when they constructed the Penmorfa Adit on the West Shore that came as far as these Copper Mines in order to drain the water from them.
We carried on past Pyllau farm and crossed over the road and the tram lines to get to the area known as Bryniau Poethion by the pylons from the overhead cable cars.    It's littered with sunken mine shafts so no wonder it's sometimes called the Klondyke.   From there we headed for the Pink Farm and then to the Ski Slope where we had our refreshments.  By that time it was warm and sunny and we sat there watching the many visitors there enjoying themselves.
Moving on again we went up to Pen Dinas, the Iron Age hill fort and to the Rocking Stone.   It doesn't rock anymore but I'm old enough to remember the times when it did rock.    The wind was so powerful that our caps blew off but we retrieved them before they flew over the cliff edge.   It was too cold to hang about so we headed down Wyddfyd Road to the traffic lights and turned right up Ty Gwyn Road.    After a few stops we climbed up the steps to get to St Beono's Road and back to the car.   It was just a short walk but nice to get out again and Llandudno is blessed with good views in all directions.   We finished the day by driving around the Marine Drive and stopping at the cafe for a nice hot latte,  getting out of the car was an ordeal as there must have been gale force winds and we were glad to get into the shelter of the cafe.

A bit heavy for a Sunday, but...................

Bank of England: 'Serious deficiencies' in economy forecasts, review finds

The Bank of England's economic forecasting system has "serious deficiencies" that need to be modernised, according to a review.

The independent report by Dr Ben Bernanke, former head of the US central bank, found staff used outdated systems that should be overhauled or replaced.

He found there had been serious under-investment in the Bank's software.

But Governor Andrew Bailey said updating the Bank's systems was a "high priority".

The former head of the Federal Reserve, said that a "material degree" of under-investment had led to staff using a "complicated and unwieldy system".

This holds staff back from producing useful analysis on what might happen to the economy, he said.

Updating and modernising how its system handles economic data should be completed "with high priority" and "as rapidly as feasible", Dr Bernanke said in the critical review.

He was asked to carry out the review last July after the UK's central bank came under fire from MPs for failing to anticipate the scale or duration of inflation - which measures how prices rise over time - over the past two years.

'Tacky' attractions and drink stalls next to historic Welsh town's castle and walls come under fire
The rides and cabins are in an event space on Conwy Quay

Tacky? attractions and drinks cabins set up in the shadow of Conwy?s 13th century castle have been criticised as unfitting for the medieval town. The refreshment stalls and children?s rides, which include an inflatable slide and a mechanical merry-go-round, are set up on the council?s event space on Conwy Quay.

But not everyone in the town is happy with the attractions, given they are so close to the castle and its walls, a World Heritage Site, which tourists travel from across the world to see. Conwy resident Richard Hughes was walking along the quay with his family when he spotted the attractions.

For Bri Roberts

My email is active and ticked to receive messages from posters.

Please can you resend and I will recheck - it could have gone to spam and been deleted.

For Hugo

Mum spent a lot of her younger life in the town with her aunt before I was born and after when we came to holiday there.  She stated when she did her will, for me to ensure that a small donation is made to both the donkeys, punch and judy man (I am in contact with him) and also Llandudno lifeboat specifically (I am speaking to them directly as well) so you can see her love for the town over all her years never faded.  I am merely trying to carry out her wishes as her executor and am grateful for all support anyone can assist me with as I dont do facebook or social media.

I am a him!!
