I'm going to say Fish Tram Chips because they take so long you can have a beer in the King's Head while you wait. Well worth the wait though.;D Has anyone been to Gardners lately?
I noticed today that a new Pet Shop had opened in the Victoria Centre, Llandudno. Its next to the pictures place, so only a tiny unit, can it sell enough stuff to survive, because the rents aren't cheap in that place! :o
I wonder what will happen to the Vic Centre when Boots in Parc Llandudno gets the pharmacy go-ahead?I think they'll keep it open. Still a good location for them.
To switch the subject to shops, I notice that the old style sweet shop which opened with a big fanfare earlier in the year (Captain Bertollas thread in the old forum), well its closed today and has every sign of being closed for good. As forecasted by several forum membersThe Bike Hire shop has been selling off all their bikes for the last couple of weeks, as well. So much for them being the saviours of Llandudno business. ££$
Does anyone know if "The Good Life" fruit and veg people are setting up anywhere else in town. I was in there just before they closed and caught the end of a conversation about them having another location either already or in mind.As I understand it, they are turning the fruit & veg shop into a mens barbers and running that. They are also still renting their old location around the corner in Bodhyfryd road, maybe they intend to reopen that as the fruit and veg shop.
Or the Russian - Rudineer Kutizedoff?
The former One Stop store on the West Shore (West Shore Garage) has a St David's Commercial "Let" sign on the window - anyone know what's happening there?
Yes, 'Ableworld'.The former One Stop store on the West Shore (West Shore Garage) has a St David's Commercial "Let" sign on the window - anyone know what's happening there?
Bit late I know, but as we can now see, this has opened as a mobility business - so get your "scooter" here.
Ah yes, I went past on Thursday and they were still fitting it out but people were knocking on the door and asking to book appointments. I think it will be a 5 minute wonder myself, the rents in the Victoria centre are so high that an awful lot of feet will have to be nibbled to make a profit!
Any ideas on how much a nibbling session will cost?
They've been trying to sell it for a year or two. The competition from Mr. Roberts must have got too much!
We had a look this afternoon, no one was having it done but they say they've sold lots of gift vouchers and should be busy in January. I told them I could not believe it was real and there's 'Candid Camera' somewhere! L0L They said it was £10 for 15 mins :-X sounds bonkers to me L0LAh yes, I went past on Thursday and they were still fitting it out but people were knocking on the door and asking to book appointments. Its £7.50. (In the Manchester Arndale its £10)
Mrs Fester is going to give it a try....(rather those fish than me) ...but I can't see this venture lasting.
The rent and rates for that unit was over £30,000 per annum!
It would appear that Aldi are planning on closing their Llandudno store, as it is shown as being available to let. Rental is £245,000 per year:

I hope Aldi doesn't close as it's on the way back from my gym and is the only shop round there that is open till 8pm so it's easy to nip in and grab a few bits.
I've never heard of La Senza and having Googled it I can see why, it's pants!_))* _))* L0L

With Regard to Alworths, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I saw the Mayor's comments regarding its closure.I noticed that as well. It just shows how out of touch some of our elected representatives are.
She said in the NWWN (and I'm paraphrasing) ''maybe it wasn't supported properly by the local community''

...and so we say Goodbye to Hoosons Corner after how many years trading in Llandudno?
It will still be called Hooson's Corner as it has been since Hooson left the place years ago! ZXZDoes the family still own the building?
as us oldies will remember the saying about burtons corner ,many a saying about that one lol
I remember Tony selling the football results on a Saturday outside Woolies
Was he the guy with the light blue three wheeler disabled car?I remember Tony selling the football results on a Saturday outside Woolies
I remember Eddie from Conway Road selling papers there. :)
Alworths has now shut down.

I believe the whole L-Block is owned by the same individual(s).
That will probably be from Marie et Cie and right round to the Con Club and maybe as far as the Masonic Building.
:o :o :o Marketing Exchange For Africa Limited ???? Or M.E.A.L for short?
..and its a curry restaurant up there? Sounds dodgy to me... :-X
THere is a rumour ???? flying round locally that the Chemists is to be a Charity Shop.Oh dear. *&(
Which Chemist is it ?The one across the roundabout from the Carlton. Been a Chemist there for donkeys years. :(
Might only be a rumour-- it is a very large space for a Charity Shop to fill unless they are going to sell furniture. Also the place smells awful, the Chemist was telling my OH before it closed that there are dire problems with the drains in the basement.

Roundabout looks lovely. :P
;)Poundstretchers are on the move too Alworths, apparently they have bought all their 16 stores. $good$Retail Week magazine is saying that Llandudno and Evesham are not included in the deal.
:) It was the manager of the store who told me she was going back there, but Dave sometimes people get it wrong, bit weird though. :'(Maybe they are just going to try and rent the premises independently, rather than as part of a deal to buy Alworths? Time will tell!
Weren't they in the process of applying to stay open until midnight, seven days a week?
I would have thought it was normal practice to apply for the longest possible opening hours even though they will probably not actually stay open until midnight on a normal basis but it means they don't have to apply for an extension for special occasions (Extravaganza etc...) where they may choose to use the late opening should the occasion arise.Quite correct, the licence application should not be taken as an indication of normal opening hours.
Heard a rumor that Frankie & Benny's http://bit.ly/pPyPwz (http://bit.ly/pPyPwz) are taking over the unit currently occupied by Iceland in Llandudno

I wonder if the ten pin bowling alleys will remain?
Burtons have started their Closing Down Sale. Caffe Nero will be taking over the premises in a week or so.
This closure will probably only leave M&S, Greenwoods and WH Smiths in (and just off) Mostyn Street as shops left from my childhood during the fifties.
I wonder have I missed one? ?{}?

What about Clare's and Marie et Ci? I know the latter is now M & Co but some people still use the old name.
Lots of activity in the old Bay Trading shop lately, it's currently being refurbished inside and out - is a tenant on the way in?
Possibly but the work looks a bit more comprehensive than for a casual tenant. Maybe its just the Landlord sprucing it up to try and make it more attractive.Lots of activity in the old Bay Trading shop lately, it's currently being refurbished inside and out - is a tenant on the way in?
Wasn't that the Past-Times seasonal store, open only until Xmas last year?
Maybe it will be the same again.
??? I find it hard to understand how DFS have not filled their job vacancies for the Llandudno store, they seem to have been advertising these jobs for months yet still advertising today ,weird. ZXZ
Iceland is no longer shutting, and will be staying open. I just feel sorry for all the staff that left when really they had no need to, hope they are happy wherever they are.
Yes I was told about 10 days ago and when I offered a free plug on the forum I was turned down !A new business that turns down free advertising? Amazing.
The always informative Oscar has the answer to this one, and its more good news for Mostyn Street. No stalls Mr Fester, more of a wander round second hand goods shop!Well I won't be dunking my head in a bucket of water for any fish to whiten my teeth....that's for sure :o
Noticed today that the fishy foot nibble shop in the Victoria centre has closed down. seems it will be a tooth whitening centre.
No stalls Mr Fester, more of a wander round second hand goods shop!Fester and I paid a visit to the old Ball & Boyds today, quite a range of furniture and collectibles, most of which was priced up. Prices seemed quite high for a lot of the furniture.
8) I keep trying to look at Savill;s website to see the old Hooson;s property ,it has their sign up but can i find any trace, ok im being a nosey old git but hey. Not sure if im missing something on their website but Llandudno does not come up. :rage:I'm sure the rent is something stupid like £70,000 a year for Hoosons.

Have you seen the scale of the alterations still being carried out?
Perhaps, DFS are unable to say when they hope to be open.
Personally, I'd go to Sainsburys rather than Tesco every time.
The application for an Alcohol Licence by Sainsburys for the former Woolies site is daily from 6am – Midnight.
There is a second application to serve refreshments from 11pm – Midnight.
What is that all about?
Their application is being dealt with by a firm of solicitors down in London who will no doubt know what they are doing.
Little sweet shop next to Cafe Nero now being worked on in St Georges Place.
At the moment, we have HMV, Blacks Clothing, Milletts (same company as Blacks) all with a presence on Mostyn Street and all on the brink of financial collapse. In addition, the owner of Priceless Shoes went into administration on the 9th December.
Looks as though Gimberts shop in Upper mostyn Street is closing down.It was only a matter of time, I suppose, since they opened the Mostyn Street shop.
All a great shame, but we've never gone in these shops, La Senza I've never even heard of! It now seems that no one else goes in them either!
But yes we need the jobs etc, but I think the future will be Asda etc and internet shopping.
Dave R we need more than a local buissness man with Conwy connections,Mr Flannigans sign is still in the window.Name begins with a P. ;)

Peacocks makes a trading profit, but all that cash and more gets swallowed up by its chronic debt.
It looks bleak, and just what Mostyn Street does not need!
I noticed that Clares were closed yesterday, apparently in preparation for a £647,259 stock clearance that begins today.

Those curved windows in Country Casuals are actually perspex, they became very discoloured and Past Times covered them over with paint or vinyl. Shame they haven't forked out to have glass reinstalled there.
My Father used to own 68, Mostyn Street. He was a pharmacist and his business Blades Chemist was on the ground floor, with a stockroom and staff room on the first floor, and a flat on the second floor which he let out for a number of years. At that time it had plate glass curved windows and they were still there when he sold the property in 1984. However I have a feeling that vandalism later led to them being replaced with something slightly less prone to damage. That's interesting, I don't suppose you have any photos of Blades to share?

According to a sign in the window today Janet Finch-Saunders could be one of the contractors or residents! Does that mean we will be paying for it? Z**That was put there for the Assembly elections back in May.
Sainsburys opening been put back to Wednesday 21st March @ 7am.I was thinking that progress was going a bit slowly. They've brought in more contractors and have got them working all hours to try and get it finished.
It was interesting to see the old 'Plumbs' sign reappear as work got underway on Diskos. I suspect it was Plumbs that installed the modern shopfront originally. What did they sell?

Llandudno Smokery has gone into Administation.
I don't believe it's owned by Mostyn Estates. Or, if it is, they've just bought it. The Long Leasehold was up for sale last year at £550,000.
Ian48, you're right, it would benefit immensely by the decorative elements being reinstated.
Who or what is going into where Next once were?Trespass, I believe.
Workmen are this morning installing the new glazed canopy on the Sainsburys store. Good to see it being done, as Sainsburys were initially reluctant to pay for it.

I notice the canopy is being installed by a local company, AA Conservatories. $good$
Well done, Neil.
I guess Sainsburys can choose to expand upstairs if their new store proves popular.Seems a waste of space at the moment, two large upstairs floors being empty.
Marks & Spencers will seriously need to start thinking about a refit for their store now, as the new Sainsbury's will really show it up to be the shabby mess it is.I don't think the new Sainsburys Local will be to much compertion for Marks and Spencer Ian. Take a look at the range of goods available in each shop for a start and then compare prices. They are both ripoff merchants. As for Marks needing a refit they are constantly revamping themselves; i.e. the new checkout system that has just gone in. Don't get me wrong. I'm glad to see the old Woolies shop brought back to life and I wish them every success but I shall still be doing my main shopping at ASDA
Just been up to Tesco's, cars are queuing almost to the roundabout. Panic buying is here!
Same situation at LSP
It was like that at Asda this morning and yesterday morning.
I suppose with the threat of a strike and petrol prices only heading one way, it makes good sense for shoppers to always top-up when visiting the store.
Scaffolding going up there this morning.I'll ask him when I see him.
Local rumour says another 'cafe' there, as Dave says, think he might know who is reputed to be behind it-- as I have also heard.
I've heard a story that BHS are moving from Llandudno and Primark are going to replace it.I have also heard this but have not been able to find out it is true. Philip Green did sell 10 BHS leases to Primark, but Llandudno wasn't one of them as far as I can see. It may be that he has sold more leases.
Is there any truth to this story or has DaveR's reporters on the ground heard anything?
The London-For Sale. Talking to landlord of london at weekend he is selling the London 149.5K. Im going to start a whip roundI'll put a tenner in. ;)
The Landlord of The London looks like Tom Selleck, (Magnum PI)I would imagine you're buying the lease/business and would have to pay the rent on top.
Cat,can you tell us if £149k is for the business only?
In which case there would be rent to pay on top of that..... or is it for the Leasehold on the property?
Same here-- been too busy to get in that direction for a day or two. I know certain people who come here on holiday who used to sit all afternoon and listen to him ----Ouch !
I see the 'Accordian Man' has gone from the corner of the pier, to be replaced by an Antiques Shop. Haven't been that way for a while, so only just noticed. bet Fester will be pleased !
Coffee shop opening on the corner of Mostyn Avenue and Queens Road in Craig y Don. The shop that used to be Place Settings, before becoming a kitchen shown room for a while. That's interesting. I'd thought in the past that would be a good unit for a coffee shop location wise, but there's a not a lot of room once you put a counter/kitchen in.
I know there are a lot of coffee shops in Llandudno, but I think this will be a good addition in Craig y Don, and certainly better than an empty unit.
The Greengrocer/Barber/ whatever else is now selling second hand goods in Upper Mostyn Street !That's the maddest shop in Llandudno. Every 3 months, it gets completely redecorated, then alternates between being a fruit shop/barbers/ice cream shop.
The former GAME shop on Mostyn Street is now available for rent at £75k pax. Rates Payable (2012/2013): £31,188.

She told me about the refusal to let her put tables and chairs outside. I thought at the time that Conwy Council were being somewhat pedantic as other places in the same area had tables, chairs and goods for sale all outside their premises.
Seems to be some work going on in the old TSB at the front of the precinct which has been empty for a long time.Yes, I'd noticed this, lots of timber being carried in yesterday.

mmm-- think it could be a bit more than just a cafe.A friend in the know tells me that it is owned by Sherrie Hewson's brother and all of the furniture etc is available for purchase. Innovative idea!
Who is Sherrie Hewson?
Who is Sherrie Hewson?
It's not on a corner, so it wouldn't be that clever.
Would the cafe not be cleverly named HEWSON'S CORNER?
Mostyn estates seem to have taken the Tudno Castle back into their empire, notice on fences explaining the situation.Interesting, will have a look tomorrow. 8) They probably got sick of looking at it from their office windows...
Card Outlet in the Victoria Centre has closed. There is a letter on the door with an offcial looking address on it, so I'm guessing they have gone into administration.

I will probably be a lone voice (as usual ;D ) but I've never seen the appeal of M & S, always seems very dear and you can't park anywhere near it. I'll stick with Asda and Tescos, both have easy parking and no big issue sellers as a bonus $good$

;)
We already have a Walmart in Llandudno
Stead and Simpson certainly looks as though it is closing down. Shoes are reduced down to rock bottom.
Old Diskos shop is to be Little Poppets Babywear Shop.
I'm sure there's something in the Ivor Wynne Jones book about it being a dance hall at some time?
American Disaster is certainly living up to its name - they will have missed peak season completely. &shake& Still no sign of any Planning Application, so I guess that story was a red herring?
People have their own agendas, mate.
Fact is, there's no Planning Application on the CCBC website and I haven't seen a little yellow notice outside the Restaurant. Now, it might be that the Application hasn't been made yet. But, as was discussed before, the rationale for an Application needing to be made doesn't make a lot of sense, and even if one was needed, there is no way on earth it could be refused, due to the site's long previous history as a restaurant. So no reason not to get the place up and running.
EDIT: Thinking about it a bit more, are you sure you don't mean a Licence application to sell alcohol?
I see Merrymoon is moving from next to the Bengal Dynasty to the corner of Ty Gwyn Road and Church Walks.
I heard it said that it was because they do so much of their trade via the website these days.
I am sceptical about that, as their website is certainly not one of the best I have seen.

Anyone know why Sainsburys was closed yesterday afternoon and still is this morning?Closed due to an 'unavoidable incident' apparently. ???
Select & Save convenience store in upper Mostyn St has closed down. Where will the town's alcoholics get their booze from now?

Think it will have its work cut out competing against Sainsburys myself...Select & Save convenience store in upper Mostyn St has closed down. I think it may still be open albeit on reduced opening hours.
Cheaper to get it cut online! My last haircut was from EBay! ;D
£5 is cheap in Llandudno and this is for Ladies and Gents and children too not just seniors! That's true. The one over the road in Madoc Street is over £9.
My elderly neighbour paid over £40.00 for a cut and set !
Going back a couple of posts. Love them or hate them, it must be said that Slaters have been selling cars for eighty --- yes eighty years . They have seen many, many car sales businesses come and go in that time, so if they think its not the time to spend cash on new showrooms, who can argue.
A walk around Marine Drive today gave good views of the new supermarket that's being built in Llys Helig Drive. Bit short on parking space but handy for the locals. ;)
I popped down to Comet today (after seeing the Sale mentioned here) .. I needed some accessories anyway and I was pleased to get a 10 to 15% discount.
Unlike JJB, Comet are discounting by a sensible degree, given the nature of the product and the low profit margin attached to it. So, no need to stampede down there, they ain't giving it away.
Certainly not.
Motorhead should be HEARD and inflicted on EVERYONE, and never hidden by headphones or ear-plugs. Thats a cop out!
???????? Hang on ... I'm replying to SDQ in my last post ... but it wouldn't include the 'quote' when replying.Yes....with your laptop. :rage:
I have this situation before, it happens..... but only every now and again. A glitch?
Isn't that the same one that The Gift Company recently relocated into, which is next door to Boots?Correct. It was J. G Gibbons when the centre originally opened.
This Sunday i promise to go shopping in town, see the new Gift Company shop in the precinct and visit the xmas fayre, has M&S been finished yet.
Nice to see St Davids have been given the job of trying to dispose of Hoosons and Boots on Broadway.
Presumably, wrex, you are referring to the leases on both?He is.

I hope DaveR hasn't already posted this news, it's up his street.Amber? Nooo...that was one of the few decent places to go in Cowlyn Bay!
Llandudno appears to have a new coffee house every week. Alas, Colwyn Bay has just lost one. It's in Station road, next to Peacocks. I,m not sure of the name, just one word though. Smart. Has every appearance of making a sudden departure. It's most definitely closed. Mike
Amber Coffee shop in Colwyn Bay has a hand written sign in the door saying they're closed until further notice. They have closed like this in the past and eventually reopened so to paraphrase Samuel Langhorne Clemons rumours of their demise may be greatly exaggerated. Also all the tables, chairs, etc are still in there. It originally opened as an Indian Restaurant, with the owners being from Rhyl. I can't remember if it was them or the current owners that had their windows repeatedly smashed, along with Darbeys chip shop across the road. I believe a message was pushed though the letter box of Darbeys saying 'go back to Rhyl'.
Dont anyone go looking too carefully at the staff. Ive got an attractive twenty year old niece working there Mike

If you were really sorry you wouldn't have mentioned it. For someone who likes to criticise just about everybody or everything that isn't to your liking you take criticism against yourself very badly.

I advise all Forum members to spend any HMV gift vouchers they may have, as in administration they WILL NOT be honoured!Too late!
I've never seen the point of gift vouchers, the only ones worth having have a picture of the Queen on them! :D
Without knowing the product in question it is difficult to comment but is it possibly a case of industry practice and all the other banks & building societies would have also refused your enquiry of their similar products.

Who's next?
I passed Baxters Photography in Vaughan Street yesterday and noticed it was now closed.
A sign says it has relocated but it does not say where to.
That studio must have been trading in Vaughan Street for as long as I can remember.
I hope I'm wrong, but I was right about Jessops and HMV.
Now, I fear for WH Smith, and Waterstones.
Did I notice an empty shop next to David Roberts Shoes in Gloddaeth Street being internally decorated when I passed lunchtime?Yes, the old Thresher off licence. They've been working on it for a week or two now.
HilCo, the company who are looking to restructure HMV, are also looking to acquire Jessops."There are reports that Hilco is considering opening Jessops concessions in HMV stores."

No - same side but slightly higher up, just past the Art shop.

I'm sure the last time i was in the original branch a few weeks ago, I heard the staff saying that they would be closing shortly...maybe to move to the new branch? 80 workers redundant in 'bombshell' move at Mochdre car parts factory
By Martin Williams, Business CorrespondentFeb 7 2013
LESS than 24 hours after being told their jobs were under threat, 80 workers at a Mochdre car parts factory have been made redundant.
Staff at Quinton Hazell were given the bad news this morning.
Parent company Klarius, which employs 1,200 people, appointed administrators KPMG yesterday.
QH has been making water pumps for customers such as Opel, Jaguar and Nissan for over 60 years.
Klarius declined to comment, but North Wales Unite union regional officer John Hamilton said: "After a meeting with KPMG today, all 80 employees have been made redundant.
"We are very disappointed because the management, with the support of the workers and Unite, had turned this business around.
"It's because the parent company Klarius had cash flow problems and pressure from the banks.
"The staff are very frustrated and angry. This is a real body blow."
Speaking to the Daily Post yesterday morning, one QH employee described how the workforce were told the company was to go into administration, before being sent home.
"There has been little for us to do for weeks, and management have been coming here less and less frequently. Now we know why," they said.
The Klarius group was billed as the largest European manufacturer of aftermarket car parts and makes 90,000 parts from five manufacturing plants – three in the UK, one in Spain and one in Germany.
Its Mochdre facility played an important role as the centre for testing and manufacturing of water pumps and related engine ancillary equipment.
The site was opened by Eric Quinton Hazell in 1946, manufacturing ball joints and steering components, before being sold to Burmah Castrol in 1972.
At its peak in the 1950s and 60s, QH sold to more than 160 countries worldwide and was the largest independent supplier of automotive parts in Europe.
Mochdre councillor Adrian Tansley said losing it will be a “huge blow” for the village.
“This is a real bombshell, I thought they were on the up and up,” he said.

I've always said the pedestrianisation of Station Road was a disaster for the shops...Having worked for many years at 2 shops on Station road,Colwyn Bay and Hubby use to have a business in the bay, i have to agree that no benefit was gained for the traders in the road when it became pedestrianised, just the opposite ,Older folk had problems parking and people had to watch they didnt get knocked down with van drivers speeding through. Also a few years ago when Station road had the revamp, we watched council workmen rip up and skip well established palm trees that would cost you or I hundreds to buy and shrubs all just dumped ,roots destroyed. All to be replaced with grey grey grey and more grey paving etc. Everywhere looked so GREY it blended in with the sky on a winters day. Nothing looked good . I remember there were meetings about reopening the road, but to be honest from what i was told it was a forgone conclusion by the Council to keep Station road pedestrianised. So who ever said folk didnt want the road opened again was either telling porkies or didnt ask enough people what they thought. If the Council ever changed their minds and opened up the road I can only see a vast improvement for the shops that are left and it may bring a little life and character back to the road. Sad though a little too late for some. Also they should have kept vehicle access to the Promenade open, even if it was one way down there, so many visitors dont know the way to the beach.
Towns 'should be more accessible', says surveyors group RICS
By Chris Dearden
BBC News
Welsh councils are being asked to look again at pedestrian zones amid concern they are deterring shoppers.
The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) says towns need to find new ways to attract people.
They should make them easier to get to and easier for car drivers to navigate around, it says.
RICS members are meeting this week to discuss what should be done to make town centres more accessible and get more people spending there.
One town the group says could benefit from a review of pedestrianisation is Colwyn Bay.
One of its main shopping streets, Station Road, has been free of traffic since the 1980s.
Philip Arundale says pedestrianisation has been a "big nail in the coffin"
Philip Arundale, who runs a greengrocer set up by his great grandfather there in 1878, has decided to close and concentrate on deliveries instead.
The ban on traffic from his street is partly to blame.
"Pedestrianisation has been a big nail in the coffin," he explained.
"Fruit and veg is heavy. People don't want to be carrying bags of veg to the nearest car park. When cars could come down the street, people just used to pop in.
"We've really campaigned against pedestrianisation the whole time. But now it's too late. It's terribly sad. I've been here all my life, and my father, grandfather and great grandfather before me.
"We'll be carrying on with just one member of staff and focusing just on deliveries - it's a shame."
"It will not put the clock back, but improved accessibility may attract new independent retailers”
Richard Baddeley
RICS member
Richard Baddeley, a surveyor in Conwy county and a member of RICS in north Wales, said towns like Colwyn Bay, Holyhead, Rhyl and Holywell have all had pedestrianised areas for some time, but now need to think of new ways to get people spending.
"Shopping has changed. High streets have changed. There are now out-of-town shopping centres - they're a draw for people," he said.
"One out-of-town shopping centre near north Wales - Cheshire Oaks in Ellesmere Port - has increased its turnover by 22% this year.
"The key issue is accessibility. Small and medium-sized towns need to think about how they attract cars in the future with improved parking and making the shops more accessible.
"It will not put the clock back, but improved accessibility may attract new independent retailers."
Master plan
Conwy council said it looked at whether to reopen Station Road to traffic a few years ago, but almost everyone who replied to the consultation said things should stay as they are.
Anglesey council said it is looking in detail at how many people shop in the centre of Holyhead.
Dewi Williams, Anglesey's Head of Highways and Waste Management, added: "the issue of pedestrianisation in town centres is one which provokes considerable debate.
"While we have no plans to change the current arrangement in Holyhead at the moment, we will be happy to consider the outcome of a public consultation that a local community group are planning on holding in the near future.
"The Holyhead town centre master plan currently being undertaken may also inform us of the benefits of any proposals."

Coffee Shop? ;D
my money is on another Restaurant and bar to lye empty 6 months of the year
Actually, there are not enough bars.
More bars, including a prestigious chain such as Barracuda or Yates, would make that area a REAL destination for locals, young 'out of towners' and tourists too. Especially when the new Travel Lodge opens.
The overall effect would be a big uplift in trade for all the bars in the area. ZXZ
I like The Cloud, as it's free and there's an iphone app that enables automatic login whenever you come into range - very useful.
Any news on Vollams? It has been closed for the last 2 mornings at the usual 'newspaper time' and yesterday all the papers were still piled up on the doorstep at 9.15am.I had a look, noticed that fridges and coolers were blocking 3 of the 4 doors inside (but maybe they always do?) and two of the glass panels in the doors had been smashed at some point.
The Sewing Machine Shop in Upper Mostyn Street now has a closing down sale.

No sale prices either last night in the windows.
I have never seen anyone in the Sewing Machine shop, nor have I ever known anyone who bought anything from there.
It is one of the many shops in Llandudno that I have been mystified about how they have kept open over the years.
The so called 'Shropshire Oat Cakes' shop, (ex Fruit and Veg, Barbers, Whistle-Stop Cafe...etc.. etc...) is one that I can never understand why it has NEVER opened. Bizarre.
Very busy in the Game store. It has reopened as Snowdonia Active outdoor store.
I see that the Home Style shop or whatever it was called at Bog Island is now re-opening as Busters. Goodness only knows what was cluttering up the pavement when I drove past and this was before 8.30am.Are you sure that's not the old sign that they've uncovered, as it used to be called that? I believe its opening as a pet supplies shop?
It's great news, we currently travel to Abergele for our birdseed!
 we have six beaks to feed here, plus numerous wild beaks! $good$
I heard a little buzz today about someone being interested in the former Parrs premises in Upper Mostyn Street. Possibly for another daytime food outlet.
Be quick.
The Closing Down sale in the former JJB Sports Retail Unit on Mostyn Champneys has only two (2) more days to go.
Can anyone remember when it started?
I see that the "opening shortly " part of the Oatcake Shop's sign has been re-instated

Oh dear, no wonder you didnt notice their mistake!!! :D
Pease pudding, sometimes known as pease pottage or pease porridge, is a term of British origin regarding a savoury pudding dish made of boiled legumes, which mainly consists of split yellow or Carlin peas, water, salt, and spices, often cooked with a bacon or ham joint.
Pease pudding hot, pease pudding cold...... etc, etc.... an old nursery rhyme I recall.

I just need to know where asda and aldi are, craft shops as in materials to make things particularly beads, pet shops preferably with good aquarium gear, fishing tackle. Someone mentioned bowling, where's that?
Thanks for replies, we're a bit beyond pets at home skill range haha! .. We have Malawi cichlid, discus, marine, tropical, coldwater and couple of tanks with siamese fighters - 9 in total however will be reducing to cichlid, discus and my siamese (can't part with him) & im undecided on the marine although prob will as i put a LOT of money into that tank and bob the sponge crab gives me endless entertainment. Got 2 tanks full of babies the lfs going to take off us.
Thanks Andy. Do they have RO water? My marine is 180 plus 80 sump and i only have a little unit so may need to run out for some to get it up and running quicker.
Thanks Dave for the Finneys rent answer. I suppose for the square yard area this looks a bargain, but then again its position is certainly not of the best.MikeIf it was on the other side of the street, it would be worth the money...maybe.
Ref tropical fish ... my son has a marine tank and gets all his stuff from the Pancake House (not sure what the fish part is called!) near the Groes Hotel, the road towards Rowen where the otters are. Last acquisition was a strange eel thing that was white - it started eating all the coral so was taken back and swapped for something a bit less hungry!!!

The place is called Conwy Water Gardens - http://www.conwywatergardens.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=103&Itemid=521. (http://www.conwywatergardens.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=103&Itemid=521.)
The last time we went was years ago and we found the tropical fish tanks were in an absolutely disgusting state. The water was filthy, the tanks were infested with little snails (not the kind you want in your tank) and a lot of them had dead fish bobbing about in them. There's no way anyone in their right mind would have introduced any of the fish from there into their tank because they were probably all riddled with disease. We've never been back, it's not the sort of place you ever find yourself passing by chance, but it might be ok now. It certainly couldn't be any worse.
Have heard a fairly strong rumour that there is going to be a new cosmetics shop opening in the Victoria centre in november, selling an exclusive French brand amongst others. Not sure which unit, but could guess at the old neet feet unit being the right footprint. Understand it is an independent person not a chain and it is their first venture into retail. ££$
Aha, thanks FatAndy! That's a strong location. I suspect they will benefit from body shop footfall, but also suspect cost wise will be more expensive than the neet feet unit. A bold and confident move. Sincerely wish them good trading, at least they will be opening at the right time of year. Great to see a new business having the confidence to invest in our town, as I am sure the shop fit will cost a bit alone!
Went to the Bodnant Welsh Food Centre for the first time today. We didn't try the tea room or restaurant but had a look around the shop. We thought they were trying to do a similar thing to the Chatsworth Farm Shop in Derbyshire which is excellent. The shop is pretty expensive, but it's all great quality. The car park was full and the whole place was very busy when we visited back in August.
We were amazed how much car parking there was. Presumably it does get busy in the summer but today it was deserted.
The buildings look as if they have been expensively renovated.
Don't buy the Great Orme beer from the Bodnant Food shop.$good$
They sell it in Morrisons and it's cheaper there Z**.

I note that in this week's list of planning applications registered with Conwy CBC, an application has gone in for a new shopfront at the former Jesspos. That's good news, the present aluminium shop front is not very attractive.
So hopefully, despite there not being a definite tenant, it will hope fully soon look a great deal better than it has done lately, with a nice new front.

The Animal shop in Mostyn St has closed down.
Just been watching "Pound Shop Wars" on BBC1 - about Poundworld - with the Colwyn Bay store being one of the stores featured.
There was a man who had worked at a factory for twenty years. Every night when he left the plant, he would push a wheelbarrow full of straw to the guard at the gate.
The guard would look through the straw, and find nothing and pass the man through.
On the day of his retirement the man came to the guard as usual but without the wheelbarrow.
Having become friends over the years, the guard asked him, "Charlie, I've seen you walk out of here every night for twenty years. I know you've been stealing something. Now that you're retired, tell me what it is. It's driving me crazy."
Charlie simply smiled and replied, "Okay, it was wheelbarrows!"

Scaffold has gone up so that is a good sign.I was told that the shop next to Tiffanys in Chapel St is to be a cafe.
Does anyone know anymore about this bakery? Could be a really nice addition to the street if it's a local, quality outfit. Much as I love it, it would be nice to have something different from a Greggs-type place.

Well, I've heard that Primark (predominantly ladieswear) is coming to Parc Llandudno, part of the current BHS store being redeveloped to house it.
Primark tend to take over the lease of BHS stores that arent performing. AS Llandundo isn't that large a store, I would expect BHS to disappear completely if Primark do come. No great loss, I know!
As I understand it, the upper floor mezzanine of BHS which is currently the cafe, will be extended across the whole building to become a full upper floor.... and that will become the Primark store.
I certainly wouldn't go anywhere near the BHS cafe.... $good$

The Facebook poster was writing about Kentucky Fried Chicken and he claimed that they had to change their name to KFC because, wait for it, there isn't actually any "chicken" passing through their restaurants.
Now I don't know if this Facebook writer is correct but I imagine he must be basically correct or Colonel Saunders would have him strung up before the highest court before you could say chicken.
I thought British Home Stores was still called that. What is its name then?
I only hope you don't say BHS. Because if its just using the initials like that, it bring to my mind a really dreadful post on Facebook which I read last week --- and I'm sorry I did.

I went into a shop that I hadn't noticed before, in Colwyn Bay, opposite the new "Bargain Booze". Full of realistic artificial plants, little statues, framed prints, some furniture, etc. Very nicely laid out - it looks as if it's the most upmarket shop in Colwyn Bay. Turns out it's "Rooms & Blooms" - but minus the gourmet coffee & tea they used to sell when they were in the previous premises (mentioned earlier in this thread, when they shut down last year).
National bakery opening in town soon, not sure of the name,at the moment i can only see Jessops having work done.

Apologies if this is old news, but I understand the old Dreams store near Halfords will be a TKMaxxNo, that's new news Yelboh, thanks for posting. $good$
Someone mentioned Primark-- but I think that was just a rumour.
It has been under offer twice recently on shoproperty, but something must put the people off last minute. It's now been marketed by St. Davids, with a rental price of £20k, which seems reasonable for Mostyn St. However, you have to factor in another £20k of Business Rates as well.

Another blow for the youngsters of this town. Empty arena, no bowling, no cinema, no fun swimming pool, no laser quest, skating rink. NO FUN WWW

The sign in the window says LET - Mostyn Estates
It does not clarify TO LET or LET BY.

It was told to me in confidence, in fact I don't think I'm supposed to know!
I noticed this afternoon the baby shop Little Poppets & Co has closed down.
It is next to the Yorkshire Building Society in Mostyn Street.
Over the past few days, have any forum members been stopped yet by the females patrolling Mostyn Champneys claiming to be carrying out a survey on behalf of the centre?
Wouldn't you sell a thriving business. rather than just close it down?I noticed this afternoon the baby shop Little Poppets & Co has closed down. It's not because it's a failing business or anything. They were doing very well, they have just decided to relocate back to London

Why not just open another shop in London if this one is doing so well?
What sort of firm are they DaveR,been everywhere over town, precinct, old Timothy Whites. They take temporary leases in shops that are available to let. I think they get a discounted rent in return for agreeing to move out if a permanent tenant is found.
I understand that Publishers Book Clearance may be opening in the former Hoosons Chemist premises on Upper Mostyn Street.
Anyone know when Domino's is opening in Colwyn Bay?
I had a flyer delivered 3 days ago saying it is now open but it doesn't appear to be.
See they were putting the sign up on the new bakery shop today looks very nice , greggs look out
It's a big shop that....and I was certain that there would be some tables in there.
What else is all that square footage being used for if not?
The residents of Llandudno have received an A4 colour leaflet promoting special opening offers for the new Domino's in Colwyn Bay boasting they deliver to the many local areas including Llandudno.
However, when I visit their website and put in my Craig-y-Don postcode, I am informed they offer a 'collection only' service.

I shall be interested to learn from other forum users living in Llandudno if they receive the same message as me when they input their home postode.
Went across to Gregs for a jam doughnut, 45p, could have had 3 for £1, but don't imagine that they would be edible tomorrow. !!

Have you tried ringing them direct instead of ordering over the internet?
They may have taken a decision to deliver outside Domino's standard area to maximise their trade as the leaflet clearly states Conwy, Llandudno & Llanddulas. Surely they wouldn't have gone to the trouble of having them printed if they weren't going to deliver to those areas?

No, I haven’t rung them yet because I wanted to be sure of my facts first.
BTW, my leaflet does not clearly state the towns you have quoted.
Mine states Conway and Llauddulas.

Surely that's not a problem though as if you bought three jam doughnuts today they'd have long since ceased to exist by tomorrow?
Some of us have the intellect to spot a spelling mistake!
Just looking at the Domino's price list. I've not had take-out pizza for a while, but this seems a tad pricey. £10.99 for a medium (11.5") cheese & tomato pizza; £14.99 for a medium "Hot & Spicy" pizza.

Not quite, ME.
One is fresh and the other isn't.
When will retailers learn that people visit this town SEVERAL times a year, and it is imperative to offer a product that people look forward to coming back for!Wise words from Mr Fester....
Pound Bakery Mike, I was in there on Saturday to test the Chicken Bake, (at 2 for £1.00), compared to the Gregg's Chicken Bake I often buy (at £1.18 for one)The downside is that you will put on twice as much weight by going there....
I would say that the Pound Bakery product was 90% as good as Greggs, and is therefore a bargain! Mmmm.

I also noticed that W H Smith is being painted, something that is also long overdue. Why they need to use painters from Newtown, rather than local tradesmen, I don't know?

Good to see a local business expanding into the old Little Poppets shop:

We are aware that there is problem with opening certain documents / plans. This will be resolved as soon as possible. If you are unable to open documents, a public inspection file can be viewed at the Civic Offices, Colwyn Bay.
Yorkie they also sell guns in wallmarts, we go to the one in Huyton that's over two floors .

FatAndy it does say new opening so i presume its a shop.
Regarding the convenience store, absolutely financially suicidal. I think there MUST be more to this. Maybe the word convenience? Perhaps it will just be selling these new style ciggie subs and it's close to smokers hanging outside the Central
It won't be long before someone opens up a "grow your own" for all the "smokers" in the Bay. ZXZ
Just googled Homebase closures and sure enought they are closing stores as the leases come up and Llandudno gets a mention.

Perfect Dreams from Colwyn Bay are going in HoosonsJust heard, they hope by end of Oct. bedroom furniture and beds only.
While in the Bay, we passed another bed shop Caro-Maria heard a lot on the net, but knew little about them, not anymore, not a fancy place but, excellent staff, Vince spent over two hours demonstrating and explaining everything we needed to know.
We had gone out to buy new beds and had seen what we wanted, and knew the price, we ended up with a deal less than half of what we expected to pay, top quality named brands and delivered C.O.D.
One happy chappie, def. recommend a visit if your on the lookout for beds.
If you watch any commercial TV, especially over a Bank Holiday, you would think no one bought anything but sofas. It's every other advert. Hate to say this, but one of ours is over 30 years old. !
I've walked past "Caro Marie" Beds loads of time during my lunch hour and it never looks like it's open. I guess either the lighting is so dim that it looks like the shop is closed when it isn't or they close over lunch. Not that it matters because I haven't been looking to buy a bed anytime recently.Quote
My order delivered all OK, I told the boss what you said ,(above) he's going to look into it.
Council have approved the planning application to turn the Super Bowl into a retail unit, namely TK Maxx. Appears to be no love lost currently between parc Llandudno, who believe TK Maxx should be going into a unit on that corner piece of land that lay derelict for a while, and Mostyn Champneys. TK Maxx say they quickly turned down the Parc Llandudno site due to it not having a suitable frontage. Detail on daily post website.
Phone retailer Phones4U collapses into administration after EE ends deal - 550 stores employing 6,000 will be shut tomorrowIs the one in Llandudno next to Clares? I always get confused with that one and the one on the retail park by Costa.
There's a branch of Phones 4U next to Clare's and also another one inside Currys/PC World on Mostyn Champneys.Yes, unfortunately for the staff, they seem to be doomed as a business. Since Vodafone, EE etc all started their own chains of shops, formerly useful companies like Phones 4 U suddenly became unwanted competitors really.
It's a strange situation as they are a highly profitable business but Vodafone and EE have recently ended deals to supply them so effectively they now have no "stock" with which to continue trading. Under the circumstances I can't see anyone wanting to take it on as a going concern and all the mobile operators have their own retail outlets so I can't see any of them being interesting in stepping in to help.

The Snowdonia Adventure outdoor shop next to the Library is closing down.
Rents range from about £30k to £100k a year. Sadly, most of the shops are owned by pension funds etc, who have no interest in having a vibrant local high street. Business rates are also a major factor, far too high to allow a family business to expand onto Mostyn St without taking a big risk. The Snowdonia Adventure outdoor shop next to the Library is closing down.
Shame... :( ...Are the Mostyn St. rents high?....a start up scheme would be good for business, a couple of years low rent, gradually increasing, might give people a chance, better than empty shops.
And there is me holding a credit note for a retuned item. Very very rare that I have ever had one of these. If I take an item back anywhere I always exchange for something else, but I couldn't find anything in Snowdonia I needed.

Sainsburys are opening a superstore in Llandudno Junction, on the old Brickworks site behind Cineworld.

Just noticed a new little bakery/deli tucked away in Colwyn Bay (at least I think it's new - can't remember seeing it before). It's opposite Wetherspoons, just past Penrhyn Road junction. It was closing, so I didn't get a good look inside.Think there's a small cafe attached to it too.
Code Cosmetics lasted a year - here's the DP story when it opened a year ago. It's always a shame when a local business doesn't make it. :( Competiton is so intense these days, and rents/rates are a killer for everyone apart from the big corporates. I do think Business Rates should be calculated according to the turnover of the shop or parent company to make it a far fairer system for local businesses.

Hmm, who knows? Perhaps the guy near the Railway Station who pays you for your sack full of old clothes, picks the best ones out and sells them again? Just a thought!
Also, Code Cosmetics..... Badgers..... Julian Graves..... there won't be anything left open in the VC soon!
There is often a market stall around the area and there has been a 'pop up' shop in the Bay Centre with those kind of prices. Items look to be second hand, but are on hangers and clothed in plastic !

Not really bad for the town as the planned closures of a number of Homebase stores was made some time ago. The shareholders are quite happy as the overall plans for the Home Retail Group are very attractive. Many HB stores will remain and greater investment is being made in the Argos side of the Business. A loss here is regretable but there will be a gain somewhere else. Maybe we will get another cafe! ZXZ

I noticed in the Pioneer an advert regarding the former William Glover store in Mostyn Street saying 'coming soon, new levels of rest and relaxation' and to keep an eye out in the nest edition for more info. Does anyone know about this? That teasing reference could stand for either a new furniture shop or even a spa I guess. It's a mystery. Big shop though and not one I would like to rent if I didn't have a solid business idea. The rent and rates will be huge.

TKMAK LOOKS VERY NICEYes I was bowled over when I saw it too !
Tkmak opens in june, just enought time to sort out the traffic congestionAnd does it need sorting. Ridiculous over the Easter holidays again. On each change of lights with only 6-7 cars escaping through the traffic lights by Macdonalds the traffic backs up right through the car park. Escaping at the other end is just as chaotic as you take your chances with obscured views, cars travelling at speed and lack of indication as you try to exit the junction.

Interesting this evening, you know i have said that Ethel Austins has been under offer for the last couple of months, well it has been cleaned up now and who do i see exiting there this evening,Mr Hillier,i really should get a life.I saw it was all getting tidied up yesterday. Interesting how Mostyn Estates seem to have quite an aggressive policy of buying up vacant shop units along Mostyn Street. ;)
The former Milletts shop on Mostyn Street is to be taken by Hope House/Ty Gobaith.
If they are serious about keeping the town thriving, perhaps they should have invested in buying Llandudno Pier? That's a very good point. The Pier is focal to the town's success as a resort. If a new owner is intent upon sending the pier downmarket, that could have serious repercussions for the town's image.
Shop situation has gone dead, glad to see Mr Hillier around the Animal shop tonight and of course TKMakk opens thursday. Not too many empty ones at the moment, Wrex, we're doing better than most towns.
I don,t know about the Williams family being intent on taking the pier downmarket. Hold on Dave, give them a chance to catch their breath. It's not every day a private company splashes out with four million. You're quite right, Mike. I was being too hasty in judging the new owner, I'm sure he has good intentions.
Actually the pier has been through a period of perceived downmarket activity. Remember back to around 1970, golden goose arcade arrives, pavilion turns into a night club, honky tonk jazz bands at the end. Was it first lea sure that owned it then? Dave will know, he was more or less in charge. They hot footed it from the North pier in Blackpoll
I was in Waitrose in Menai Bridge earlier, what a fantastic shop it is, such great quality food. If only they could be persuaded to open in Llandudno; I imagine the demographic would be perfect for them.
Wow Steve ,few months ago the oil price fell they all cut the price of fuel £1.04 they said it should have gone to less than a pound ,noticed how it crept up back to £1.14 the oil price hasn,t shot up again .I don't use a lot of fuel, and I am not up on prices, I thought it might be good news when I posted..... :(

I know what you mean, but they have been taking over a lot of the empty shops recently, and I think there are already two? in the center, this could be a case of just not enough trade, and blaming it on the rent. &shake&Unfortunately Steve, that is very rarely how it works. :(Talking to the girl the other week the lease was up and they were waiting to see how much the rent was rising , must have hiked it too much .I think Mostyn Estates would rather have a lower rent, than another empty shop.......?

Why should an unelected body have any say in law making?
The House of Lords can act as a useful means of moderating proposed laws. However, we need to rid it of all the political and religious cronies and make it a truly independent elected body.QuoteWhy should an unelected body have any say in law making?
That's a thorny question, since many support the House of Lords and because we don't live in a society where our lawmakers are truly representational. If we did, the government would have a very different appearance.

So Mostyn estates do now own the Victoria center and we might even get it filled for the first time everIs that for definite, Wrex?

Gwynant: I've edited your post to try to make it clearer. For future reference it's best to copy and paste quotes from others into the quotes tabs using the little yellow Quote icon above your main Reply box. For some reason using the Quote button in the line that appears above the person whose quote you're trying to copy is a tad indiscriminate. Best to hit "reply" then use the little speech bubble icon that appears. Thanks for that advice Ian, I appreciate any help as I do struggle with posting occasionally as I tend to suffer from technophobic problems!

re your post on What is Llandudno...........................and my post here involving Take a Break, having walked past a few times recently the water has been almost to T a B's front door. A week last Monday the water was actually coming up from the drain outside W H Smith. There's certainly big problems with the drainage in that part of town. It amuses me that CCBC don't seem to have the resources to do something essential like clean out the drains, yet 3 vanloads of staff were despatched to outside the Air Ambulance shop to install what looked like bike racks in the pavement the other day. &shake&
I remember a tiny shop on Mostyn Street called Sandbach, is it still there? i recall on the ground floor i used go and buy a delicious fudge and probably gobble it on the way home.A flight of steep narrow stairs to the second floor where if I remember it correctly was a little cafe and another flight to the top floor where there were superb and unusual gifts. i bought many birthday and Christmas presents there.Sandbach sadly disappeared years ago, the shop became part of the larger shop next door. A shame that a lot of these smaller units have disappeared off the High Street; maybe one of the bigger vacant units could be subdivided into 'starter' retail units at a low rent.
When you stepped on the top step of the stairs a buzzer would go off alerting the staff of your presence and make you jump!
Good memories but I expect it's difficult for a small shop like that to survive these days.
Noticed that Susan French had her windows covered over the other day. Hope she hasn't closed, it was a fascinating shop.
Thanks for the info Fes. Shame that....I loved to admire her windows.

Always interesting to see what information we can discover. Homebase was founded by Sainsbury's and GB-Inno-BM in 1979, the company was then owned by Home Retail Group from October 2006. GB-Inno-BM owns and operates more than 600 Maxi GB and Bigg's Continent hypermarkets. The company is based in Brussels, Belgium. As of July 25, 2000 GB-Inno-BM operates as a subsidiary of Carrefour. B & M was founded by Malcolm Billington as Billington & Mayman and the first store opened in Blackpool, United Kingdom in 1978 and was acquired by Simon and Bobby Arora from Phildrew Investments in December 2004. The chairman is Sir Terry Leahy, the ex-boss of Tesco who got out just before profits started to plunge. Home Retail Group is the subject of a bidding war between Sainsbury and Steinhoff. Fascinating times.
B&M ? Just been for a look at the place. Excellent pricing and a wide choice of goods. Bright and clean too........if a little mind blowing ! Actually got what I went for as well. My OH needed a sprayer to treat the garage roof with woodworm killer, so 99p is fine to throw away afterwards.! Many grocery items were below supermarket prices, so we will see how it goes. ;D
Although we have Mostyn estates bringing in new companies into town i really think it needs a person who is not looking toself gain to manage the whole town,a manager who will sell the town,we have everything going for us but there are lots of buisnesses who do not realise how good we are and need selling too.I agree. A Town Manager is a great idea for that reason, they could also work to obtain funding for refurbishment of public areas, organise events etc as well
Went to have a look at M & B this morning and whilst there noticed the Sale in Sports Direct next door. Well worth a look at. My shoes were reduced from £80 to £21

BHS Ĺlandudno possably under threat .
BHS creditors approve rescue plan
Any inkling as to which unit this might be? It would have to be a larger one and I guess they would want a street front I would have thought. The proposal is for a maximum size of 2500sqm for food retail, which could potentially be 2 or more existing units combined. I don't think they have a specific unit(s) in mind yet.
Johnsons the Dry Cleaners in Lloyd Street has closed down
Poco (Spanish for small)
Just passed Nigel Roberts Newsagents 6 vans outside, plenty of work going on, sign in window for Poco Coffee opening soon....interesting web site.
When I'm in Spain and they sell things in 4 sizes, Grande (large obviously), Medio or Poco, (small)
There is also Pequena, (I think that's how it's spelt) for tiny!
I think they do it when I'm not in Spain too ;D ;D
Booming Llandudno has fewest empty shops in Wales
Not sure Conwy has one empty shop, what are they going by
Card Outlet in the Victoria Centre has closed down.Sorry to see any shop closing, but two card shops so close together would have been tough, and I think the centre needs more variety anyway.
Retailer BHS files for administrationParc Llandudno have submitted plans to extend the mezzanine floor by 1,000 sq.mts.
High Street retailer British Home Stores (BHS) has filed for administration, putting 164 shops and almost 11,000 jobs at risk.
I doubt if any new manager of a store the size of Asda, Llandudno is new to the job. In the sense that they will have been well and truly weaned into it through previous positions as manager of smaller stores. It really is a tremendous operation. I only realised how big and complex it is when a did a fixture audit for an outside contractor 18 months ago. It really was an eye opener.
We've moved to Aldi and now only use Wallmart when we have no other choice &shake&
Nemesis, don't you like self service tills? Knowing you I am surprised. I think they are great. I always use them. Maybe our different opinions is down to the number of items. Living by myself with not much fridge space I tend to buy a small number of items in a maybe every three/ four days.
We go in Asda once or twice a week, all seems fine to me, what are the problems that others are finding there?A lot of regular items out of stock mate, , and really bad staff morale.
Talking about supermarkets, are Tesco loosing their touch? Has there Hugh financial scam that has come to light taken their eye of the ball?
In the Llandudno junction store there has been a sizeable marketing makeover. I presume it's in other Tesco stores as well. The theme is, don't travel. Use your local store.
I guess this is aimed at Aldo/Liddell. I imagine there are far more tescos than Aldi. But I bet that spar and the coop are rubbing their hands together. Thanks very much Tesco. You are doing our job for us.
The BHS stores in Llandudno and Wrexham will shut for good after administrators were unable to save the struggling high street chain.
Despite considerable efforts it has not been possible to agree a sale of the business, the administrators have confirmed.
Although multiple offers were received, they say none were able to complete a deal due to the working capital required to secure the future of the company.
As a result all 163 stores will be in “close down sale mode” over the coming weeks and while continuing efforts will be made by the administrators to sell stores, they say the jobs of 8,000 members of staff are likely to go.
Scores of retail jobs at the stores in Llandudno and Wrexham will now be lost.
The administrators paid tribute to “professionalism and hard work” shown by employees and also thanked the public for their support which resulted in “several weeks of significant sales”. ref DP.
It is a shame for all the staff involved, but I do not think it will be empty for long, especially after increase in floor space.Retailer BHS files for administrationParc Llandudno have submitted plans to extend the mezzanine floor by 1,000 sq.mts.
High Street retailer British Home Stores (BHS) has filed for administration, putting 164 shops and almost 11,000 jobs at risk.
It is to ensure the unit remains “commercially viable” although it is not clear if this is to help retain BHS or attract a new occupier if the chain does leave.
The resort has the best occupancy rates of towns its size in Wales and sources say that Primark could be interested in coming to Llandudno if the right size unit can be found.
Indigo Planning have submitted the application on behalf of Parc Llandudno.
"The proposed development provides an opportunity for economic growth.
“It will ensure that the unit remains commercially viable.”
They added: “It will provide more job certainty in the local area by improving the unit’s viability. The increase in retail floorspace will provide new jobs in the local area.”
Farm and pet shop Mostyn Street closing down on the 5th of July.
Lady assistant comes from over there so she is still in a job.
How did the application go for a mezzine floor in BHS go,very forward thinking by Parc Llandudno there i thinksWould be a good unit for H&M.

Llandudno's Mostyn Champneys shopping park to revamp shop units. No doubt the 'revamp' will involve an application for more shops that they can let at sky high rents....
The owners of a shopping park in Llandudno are planning a major revamp to allow the site to compete in “increasingly difficult market conditions”.
Mostyn Champneys Shopping Park was built nearly 30 years ago and the 22 retail units employ several hundred staff in the town.
Owners Hercules Unit Trust (HUT) have been investigating how to revamp the site to modernise the park and ensure shoppers keep coming back in the face of growing competition from online and rival shopping venues.
A spokesman said: “On the basis of the shopping park’s age and the increasingly challenging market conditions facing retailing generally, the park’s owners HUT have considered a number of options for improving the shopping park’s overall appearance and attraction, and the associated shopping experience for customers.”

Removing the covered walkways is a big mistake as that's one of Llandudno's best features and respects the Victorian heritage.Sounds like a nonsensical and wasteful proposal, unless there's something I'm missing?
Traffic flows at Mostyn Champneys are certainly the biggest problem there at present, it can be a nightmare when you're leaving at the McDonalds end.

That's the traffic light system, I think it's set for about 20 seconds, only allows 4/5 cars through, you can see the drivers in race mode, waiting for the green light, but I suppose the main road takes priority .
Before anyone points it out I do that i.e. drive into Llandudno in the outside lane and drive right around the island and proceed into Llandudno mostyn street. And I've got the name of the golf course on the back of my car. But I must point out there is nothing whatsoever illegal or even "jumping the queue" in my actions. If I don't do that I would have to enter via Craig y Don every day or spend half my life in the queue.

Butcher Tony Doyle's Quality Meats calls in liquidators
The company is one of the biggest butcher's in North Wales with mobile vans and shops.
Tony’s Meats Ltd, which trades as Tony Doyle's Quality Meats, runs around a dozen mobile meat trucks across the region with retail premises in Kinmel Bay and Llandudno.
But the company with its base at Tir Llwyd Industrial Estate, Kinmel Bay has called in liquidators.

A new company has been set up from 14th Nov 2016 and is called Tony Doyle's Meats Ltd and the one director is ...... Tony Lee Doyle
So no surprises there.
Hope not Lidl not an asset to the area. !Why not? No worse than Asda thats already there. The refurbished one in Mold is really nice with its bakery area.
Will parking not be an issue? The area always used to be rather congested and trying to get back out onto the main road can be awkward.
You might just get a low sports car under the bridge !
The entrance for the car park appears to be where the lay by is and opposite the football field. Do you know what is happening to the Crosville club Bri?
Without wanting to sound too much like a company man, the site in Junction is simply too large for us now, and that's no secret. Are the old NWWN printing presses still in place, Tom, or where they removed long ago?
I'm no fan of the LAETH Y LLAN (Village Dairy) yoghurts, which seem to be the main brand stocked by virtually every shop in North Wales (from supermarkets to garage mini-marts to farm shops) - they're bland, over-sweet and don't taste anything like yoghurt to me.
So it's good to see that Morrisons in Colwyn Bay have started stocking the far superior Longley Farm range. They're cheaper (34p) and actually taste like yoghurt. Typical ingredients list:
(Longley Farm Blackcurrant yoghurt - 150g pot):
YOGHURT
BLACKCURRANTS (8.0%)
UNREFINED FAIRTRADE CANE SUGAR
By comparison, typical ingredients list for LAETH Y LLAN (Village Dairy) yoghurts:
(Village Dairy Blackcurrant yoghurt - 125g pot):
YOGHURT
SUGAR
BLACKCURRANT FRUIT 4.5%
(SUGAR, BLACKCURRANTS, WATER,
MODIFIED MAIZE STARCH,
FLAVOURING,
CITRIC ACID,
POTASSIUM SORBATE)
I think Morrisons started just putting a few pots of Longley Farm on the shelves (possibly surplus from English stores), but people bought them, so they've become a regular (they're on the far right of the aisle). I'm all for stocking local manufacturers, as long as it doesn't create a monopoly of tasteless sugary starchy slop. Rant over - please feel free to remove if not appropriate ;)
I have heard it is going to be a Victorian Tea Shop......
The old Manor Fine Foods, or 'Bish Pots Pantry on St George's place closed down last month and has had loads of work going on inside.New HQ for the LLANDUDNO IMPROVEMENT COMMISSIONERS?
All I can see is a very posh looking lighting rig, chandelier type things.
I've not seen a 'change of use' notice, but it doesn't look like a shop fitting going on.
Does anyone know what it's going to be next?
I see the former Staples, now Office Outlet has a closing down sale on.
Staff say it will close in the next few weeks. Sadly with the internet this could not be described as surprising.
I've heard that a 'Little Waitrose' is mooted for the now empty Store21 unit in the Victoria Centre. Time will tell if they actually do open there.
The Victoria shopping centre is quite a sad sight these day.
So many empty, concealed or struggling units.
Why not close close it down and reopen it as a night time arcade of bars and cafes?
It would be busier than it is now.
Rumour only..... Army and Navy store Bangor closing and relocating to Mostyn St.

On the estate where we live in CyD there are covenants imposed by Mostyn Estates ever since it was built way back in 1979 but, to the best of my knowledge and belief, whenever residents have complained to them about a breach of covenant they have taken no action. It's a planning restriction on Parc Llandudno, rather than a Covenant. Can't be ignored, can only be overturned after a fresh planning application to vary the planning consent for the original development.
Perhaps, a precedent has already been set if M&S wish to eventually sell food on Parc Llandudno.
I would much prefer to see M&S on Parc Llandudno rather than in Llandudno Junction.
From a customer point of view I can't understand how anyone can do a significant amount of shopping in M & S or anywhere else in town. The nearest places we can normally find to park on a weekend are near Tudno school or near the Oval. Wouldn't fancy trekking that distance with heavy bags.
I wonder how much revenue the multi story car park actually makes? If they made that free then it would be a massive boost to the (often empty) shops in the Victoria centre and to the town as a whole.
As a resident of Conwy CBC area I generally do not want to stay in town more than an hour and a half, which is one thing that Conwy council are generous about!!
Those who arrive in Llandudno for the day should pay, like we have to pay when we go anywhere else ... Chester, Wrexham, Southport etc.
M&S moving to the Junction would be a blow to the town, however I would favour a move anywhere if they were open longer hours during the week. Any 9 to 5 workers struggle to do any shopping there, I usually rush around the store for the last 15 minutes.
As for the Victoria Centre, that cold looking and feeling place with the turn over of shops reflecting the high rates. One shop did give me a figure they had to make per day to profit, cannot remember exact figure but it did seem unsustainable.
I look forward to further announcements and probably a lot more debate.
I agree can usually do everything I want in town in 90 minutes (except for church on Sunday) but even given that, it's still extremely hard to find a space anywhere near town, especially during the summer.
Unless I was dreaming...I passed through Colwyn Bay yesterday and there was a new shop opening at the top of Penrhyn Road (in the old Boots/Maplin/Carphone Warehouse shop)...and its Laura Ashley.
What next, a branch of Selfridges opening in Rhyl?

Rather than opening stores, they’ve been issuing profit warnings and closing them.

I feel sad for our area, I just wish we had quality stores, we don't just need crappy supermarkets and clothes shops, be proud of Llandudno and buy the best, who needs pound shops, Aldi and LIDIL, we are getting like Rhyl not a good plan.
I'd add that there's nothing wrong with Aldi's produce, either; we've only just started investigating them and their fresh orange juice is every bit as good as Tropicana, for far less.I'd disagree. We've found Aldi's fruit and veg to be not of particularly high quality. On several occasions, I've seen rotten fruit on sale there.

The rib eye and fillet steaks in Aldi are wonderful and are excellent value-for-money.
New Look is fairly large in terms of ground area, so they could take that and slap a couple of storeys on. And being next to Debenhams it would be a fit, of sorts.

I was told the same thing by a Marks Floor Supervisor. Complete takeover of the corner pathway plot as well and they propose to go up another floor as well. As I think was said earlier the ASDA codicil about shops selling food on the site was only for 10 years, so that won't be a problem. No more collect by car problems and with up to date logistics, no need for the large warehouse either. Smart move by Marks, bad move for retail in Mostyn Street.

Annual profits at Next have fallen 8% after what the retailer described as its most challenging year for 25 years.
"The middle market is suffering and there isn't a way back home," Kate Hardcastle, from consultancy Insight with Passion, told the BBC.
"I think retail generally in this market place has been quite lazy. As soon as consumers had an alternative option that are perhaps are a better price, better product or faster moving product, I think they've taken it
"So you've seen the rise of Primark on the discount side, Asos and Zara on the more fashion-orientated side and a consumer very much influenced by Instagram and social media.
"It's just too much of a turnaround, too much of a challenge for these quite heavyweight retailers who have expected to trade the way they always have.," Ms Hardcastle said.

We also noticed another shop being emptied on the corner of Trinity Avenue and Mostyn Street.
I suppose you could have called it a ladies accessories shop near Trinity Church next door to the newsagents which is next door to Subway.
New shop opening in Conwy Town, a bakery, haven't they noticed we have two already ! I will give them 12 months tucked away on Bangor Road. We need a fish shop, a Stermat type store, No more Coffee shops, Cafes and gift shops please.

We noticed this afternoon that Store 21 has suddenly closed down in the Victoria Centre.
Apparently the Llandudno branch is one of those mooted for closure.
A new toy store, perhaps? It's possible but I'd say that unit is way too big for someone like The Entertainer. Rates alone are £76k and the rent is almost certainly well over £100k.
What has happened too all these plans for M&S,Costa,Mcdonalds etc and who is in the old M&S.Could you believe everytime i sent for a new password i did not look in junkmail lol, never mind im back.

Heard that it might be Parc Llandudno owners who have M&S satalite store, would make sense because there is no new stores coming
I notice Poytons the butchers has closed when did this happen ? , anyone know the reason why .
Toy shop chain The Entertainer coming to North Wales town
The brand wants to open its second store in North Wales.
The brand is to due to open a new site in Llandudno.
The exact site is due to the released in the coming weeks and the Daily Post understands it could open as early as September.
The Entertainer has remained tight lipped on the plans but they are already advertising for staff for the new shop.
lets be honest a decent butcher and bakers and wine shop would do a roaring trade on Mostyn st but its the overheads that make them all non startersI agree but as there are at least three budget end ones making it pay I don't see why a quality one couldn't do equally well. As for butchers, maybe ask at Poyntons why they moved?
I'm told, but not certain if it's correct, that there is a covenant preventing anyone operating a grocery store on Champneys RP. Presumably part of the agreement with Asda when they moved.
I don't often shop in M&S, but have you thought about the volume of elderly people who shop there who aren't computer savvy? :-\

The future of North Wales Debenhams stores were in doubt again today as the chain teeters on the brink of administration.
This morning Debenhams requested its shares be suspended from trading with immediate effect, pending a further update.
It comes after Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct made a revised £200m rescue offer for Debenhams - but lenders said it was not enough to persuade them to allow more time as it seeks new finances.

I think that the security guard may have been watching, to see if the man returned to collect the items that set off the alarm, because they would not be able to charge him with theft until he had left the building with them. ))*

We are hearing of fun and games at Asda, the parking area is full, there are queues on the main road, and they are working a one out one in system, also same system on trolleys, no one allowed in without a trolley, security must be a nightmare.

A Restaurant chain wants Marks and Spencer site in Llandudno,
Plans have been submitted to transform the former Marks and Spencer store in Llandudno.
A plan is in from restaurant and bar chain Loungers https://loungers.co.uk/ to sub-divide the site and create an eating place.
While it would be a loss of a retail space it would mean this large empty site is occupied - with jobs created.
A statement from D2 Planning said: "The unit has been vacant since M&S vacated on February 10 2018. The property has been marketed since then and no interest in retail has been received. ref DP
I like the description 'clean and contemporary' Recently Superdrug has got decidedly grubby. I also hope that the dispensary facility remains open as many people from the top end of town rely on it for prescriptions.
It's really important that an alternative to Boots is kept available. There are precious few independents, now, so Boots will get the lot. There are more chemist shops around than you first realise Ian.... Asda,Rowlands,Lloyd's,Swettenham's as well as Superdrug and the 3 Boots outlets all within Llandudno.
I'm told that Aldi have introduced measures to improve customer safety but both limiting customer entries, controlling space in queues to get in and creating a one way direction with no u-turns to go back for all those once inside. Thanks for the Aldi tip, Morrisons are trying food boxes.
Think about your shopping list before you go in and try and put it in the order that goods are stocked and that will make your visit a lot quicker, reduce queues and hopefully not miss anything needed too.

Yes they have and the system is excellent.
A shop I didn't realise was there until recently is "Toolstation" in Builder St. Currently they are only operating on "click and collect" but what a superb service. Browse their shop online, pay and within 5 minutes I was told I could collect. No waiting whatsoever when I got there.
In fairness B&Q also have a "click and collect" too and that was very efficient too the only difference was it took 26 hours before I was told it was ready to collect. They should be able to up that surely?
Earlier in this thread the new Lidl was mentioned. Perhaps it was me, but when I managed to hobble in this afternoon for a quick look, I hobbled out more rapidly than when I went in. There doesn't seem to be any order with any thing. Food, toys, clothes and household things all seemed to be muddled up together. The bread and bakery goods looked lovely, but there you have it. I did buy a tiny miniature rose bush....and that was it!

When I mentioned the story to Mrs H, she told me there had been a lot of talk on FB, as you said, about Aldi expanding into Argos, but she also said there was talk of Halford's moving into the old Maplin store and Argos taking over the Halfords site, it has also been mentioned that the McDonald site will become a car park for the expanded Aldi store ?..........a right old game of musical chairs.ARGOS has confirmed that it is to vacate its current base on Mostyn Champneys Retail Park. ref PioneerCheckout girl in ALDI said they were looking to take over the site so they could expand

I understood from the past that none of the outlets there were allowed to sell food. Did I imagine this? Or can M&S get round it if true?
I seen very good plans a few years ago, concerning M&s moving and more going on, will this present council have the thought to carry that through, the covernence on the food was overcome so we will see.
I think truck drivers wages will be getting better very soon, I was told yesterday, one of our big supermarkets is employing over 70's as van delivery drivers.........
