This may be of interest to you, Stan. I saw this rather nice image on Flickr of the interior of Holy Trinity done by a chap called Jeff Morgan (Elm Studio):

Certainly is Dave. We did a restoration project on the stained glass windows in 2006 - I don't know whether this pic was taken before or after, no matter because it looks rather splendid anyway.

Gwen Robinson would be proud of her floral arrangement, she has been "doing the flowers" for quite a few years now. The altar arrangements at Christmas time were always provided by the late Betty Foulkes. Betty died on Christmas night 2008 - sadly missed.

Stan, you've reminded me that, for anyone walking on the Orme, a visit to St Tudnos is well worthwhile -  there is some splendid stained glass inside:

Yes I think £10k is the cost of the slates but the total cost is about £60k, and Cadw have declined another grant application. :rage:
Title: Re: Local Churches and religious news

£60K  equates to £50 each from 1,200 people. At £1 per week it would only take one year to raise the cash.  ;)

First find the 1,200 people which out of a local population of 30,000 shouldn't be that difficult  Cash can also be raised in other ways, it just depends on the commitment and determination of those who are interested.   D)

Oh that it could be as easy as you suggest Yorkie!

Raising money for a Church roof is a difficult task but in this case it should be easier because St Tudno's Church is Llandudno's earliest, is listed and of historic interest, but that did not influence Cadw so why should it persuade anyone else.

Nevertheless if anyone wishes to donate £50 I am sure the fundraising committee would be delighted to hear from them.

Probably louder than at ground level although I have never been up there when they have been ringing. When I have been up there though, I have been surprised how the "street sounds" seem to drift up and at times conversations down below on the Mostyn Street pavements are quite clearly audible.

I enjoyed that.  There is - hopefully - going to be a Christmas concert by the Trinity Players, date TBD, and that will be good.  If there's no S e L perhaps the hand bellringers might like to do a session in the mince-pies and mulled wine eats that will follow Trinity's concert?

No Son et Lumiere this year - sorry, but pleased you enjoyed last year's. It seems to be something which tends to be held occasionally.

Ian, if you let me know the date when you have the concert, I will see if we can put a band together.

What I'm asking is, what forthcoming events are there at the Holy Trinity that we could attend?

Last year the Church was full so it might pay to be an "early bird" if you attend this one. I*

PS Fester, we don't shout at anyone,  we are just pleased to see you when you do come. BTW we ring the bells for half an hour before this one so if you would like to come up and have a look, you would be most welcome.

Slightly earlier than the above is the newly instituted Carol Concert at Trinity by the Trinity Players.  That's on

Tuesday 7th December starting at 7.30pm

and features Mulled wine and Hot mince pies afterwards in the church schoolroom.  The proceeds from the concert, which will consist of all your favourite Christmas  songs and carols, plus seasonal readings from Joyce Grenfell and Pam Ayres, among others, are going to

Help For Heroes

and tickets cost £2.00 and are available from Intersport or Sport Direct, Upper Mostyn Street, or on the door.

The annual services of Carols by Candlelight at St. Tudno's Church will be on
Sunday 19 December at 3.00 pm and at 5.00 pm.

For more information and a photo, please see:
http://www.llandudno-parish.org.uk/Christmas_2010.html (http://www.llandudno-parish.org.uk/Christmas_2010.html)

There are two services as the church is not very large and the services are popular.  The paths will be lit, weather permitting, but a torch may still be useful if attending the later service.  There is no heating in the church but the welcome will be warm.  CCBC has kindly agreed that the public toilets near the church can be kept open until after the services.

Weather permitting, St. Tudno's will be open over Christmas and the new year (25 - 29 December and 1 - 3 January), then weekends and Wednesdays for the rest of the winter.

Happy Christmas - Nadolig Llawen!

Carols by Candlelight at St. Tudno's Church took place on Sunday, despite the rather tricky conditions on the Great Orme roads.  Many thanks to five members of the Friends of St. Tudno's Church who prepared the church and led the service and to everyone who struggled through the snow to attend - 25 at 3.00 pm and five at 5.00 pm.

Ian, many thanks for recently posting instructions on how to add a photo.

He will be presenting awards to 27 church choir members from Wales, seven of whom are members of Holy Trinity's choir, for service to church music. Admission is by ticket only.

This is the first time since the awards commenced, that the service and ceremony has not been held in one of the Welsh Cathedrals.

On this day only, the Holy Trinity Church "Pay & Display" car park will be closed to the general public. The Church apologises for any inconvenience this very special occasion may cause.

Holy Trinity was packed yesterday for the Archbishop of Wales' Awards for Church Music.  The first photograph shows members of Holy Trinity Choir who received awards for more than 25 years' service, together with the Rector of Llandudno, the Archbishop and one of his staff (holding the Archbishop's cross).

The second photograph shows most of the award recipients, who came from throughout Wales.  Amongst them there were some remarkable achievements for long service.  The gentleman on the far left has the longest record - he is 92 and has been a chorister since he was seven.  The lady on the far right wearing a hat has been an organist for 50 years, while two other ladies who were not present received awards for 70 years as an organist and for 76 years as a chorister.

Archbishop sponsors 1000th slate

The Archbishop of Wales, Dr. Barry Morgan has sponsored the 1000th slate for St. Tudno's Church.

As part of the fundraising to re-roof St. Tudno's, the Friends of St. Tudno's Church have been running Sponsor-a-Slate, with the aim of finding sponsors for each of the 1000 new slates which the builder estimates will be required.

Including Gift Aid, Sponsor-a-Slate will have raised about £14,700 but considerably more money is still required.  The Parish is applying for grants and the Friends of St. Tudno's are continuing fundraising, with the next event being a fair at Holy Trinity Church on Saturday 16 April, from 10.00 am - 2.00 pm.  Weather permitting, the fair will include the popular soft toy bungee jump.

Easter at St. Tudno's

On Easter Day, Sunday 24 April, there will be an Easter Vigil service at St. Tudno's Church at 5.30 am.  The service will include Communion and will be followed by breakfast, cooked by the Friends of St. Tudno's Church (the cooking facilities at St. Tudno's are somewhat limited so please don't expect anything too grand!).

Lifts can be arranged between Llandudno and St. Tudno's and it would be helpful to have an idea of the number of people who would like breakfast but this is not essential, as anyone is welcome to turn up and join in.  Please sign one of the lists in the back of St. Tudno's or Holy Trinity Church, send me a PM or contact the parish via the parish website:

North Wales Coast Branch of the Aircrew Association to lay up its Standard
Holy Trinity Church, Sunday 8 May, 10.30 am

On 8 May, the North Wales Coast Branch of the Aircrew Association is laying up its Standard at Holy Trinity Church, Llandudno. Membership of the Association was open to anyone having been awarded a flying badge who was serving or who had served in the RAF, the Army, the Royal Navy or the forces of commonwealth and other nations. The national organisation recently resolved to disband the Association because of a dwindling number of members, many of whom were World War 2 veterans. Last year, the worldwide membership was 4500, down from a peak of over 40000 in the mid-1990s. With 75% of members being aged 80 or more, it was inevitable that the Association was experiencing a loss of energy and was becoming unviable.

The North Wales Coast Branch which meets at Llandudno’s RBL Club had, at its peak, over 60 members. However, in line with the national organisation, continuation has now become impractical and as a consequence, the Branch is disbanding this year. Its Standard is to be entrusted to the care of Holy Trinity Church at the 10.30 am service on Sunday 8 May and will be laid up in the church’s Memorial Chapel. The Rector of Llandudno Parish, the Rev Prebendary John Nice will receive the Standard for safe keeping from the Branch’s Chairman, Arfon Evans. The Branch’s Chaplain, the Rev Prebendary Robert Griffiths, Rector of Rhos-Cystennin Parish, will be the guest preacher.

Members, ex-members and other interested persons are welcome to attend.

The 5.30 am Easter service at St. Tudno's was attended by 26 people, most of whom stayed to enjoy a breakfast of barbecued "bacon butties" provided by the Friends of St. Tudno's Church.

The next event at St. Tudno's is the spring working party on Saturday 14 May at 10.00 am.  We will be setting out the benches for the open air services and cleaning and tidying the church and churchyard.  Anyone who would like to join in will be very welcome.  Jobs for all and refreshments provided (but no barbecue this time!).

Miriam restored!

We are delighted to say that the window of Miriam at St. Tudno's Church, damaged in the break in earlier this year, has just been restored.

The gentleman who did the work told me that he had found an excellent "before" photo of Miriam on Flickr (evidently better than the one which I'd supplied).  I told him I was pretty sure that the photo would have been by a certain David Roberts.  The restorer said it was good to know that there is somebody photographing stained glass windows.  Thanks, Dave!

Glad to have been of help (assuming it was my photo he saw).  :) Good to see Miriam back in one piece!  $good$

Did we ever find out who was responsible for the break-in?

The burglar was arrested by police in London, with several forces from around the UK after him.  He was identified with our break in by a blood sample found at the scene.  Apparently he is being / has been deported home to Poland.

Many thanks to PC Mike Smith and his colleagues for all their help with this.

Open Air Services at St. Tudno's Church, Great Orme

The season of open air services begins on Sunday 29 May.  The services are at 11.00 am each Sunday till the end of September (with the exception of Sunday 5 June, when there will be a special service at 10.30 am) and transport is available from Holy Trinity Church at 10.30 am.  The services are very relaxed, ideal for children, and dogs are welcome.  If the weather is bad, the service is held in the church.  For more details, please see the parish website:
http://www.llandudno-parish.org.uk/sttudno.html (http://www.llandudno-parish.org.uk/sttudno.html)

We look forward to seeing you at St. Tudno's.

Good news, I wonder if he had to pay for repairs? Also as Poland is in the EU what's to stop him returning?

No, we've not received a penny from the burglar.  As Bellringer has pointed out before, although the church is insured there's a £500 excess to pay - which would be better spent on re-roofing the church.

Celebrate Llandudno’s Patron Saint on St. Tudno's Day

St. Tudno is Llandudno’s Patron Saint and his feast day is on 5 June.  This year the Parish of Llandudno will be celebrating St. Tudno’s day with an open air Communion service at St. Tudno’s Church at 10.30 am.  There will not be a service at Holy Trinity Church at this time as all the congregation will be going up to St. Tudno’s and we warmly invite anyone from or visiting Llandudno to join us there.   Parking at St. Tudno’s will be very limited but the Parish will be providing a shuttle bus service between Holy Trinity Church, where parking is available, and St. Tudno’s.  The first bus will depart from Holy Trinity at 9.15 am.

St. Tudno was a Celtic monk who came to the Great Orme in the sixth century, bringing the word of Christianity to the people living on the headland and founding the church from which the town takes its name.  There has been a place of worship on the site ever since St. Tudno’s time, with the present building dating from the 12th century.  Open air services have been held at St. Tudno’s since the 1860s or earlier and the season of open air services runs from the last Sunday in May till the last Sunday in September, usually at 11.00 am .  If the weather is bad, the services are held in the church.

For more details on St. Tudno's, please see the parish website at:

St. Tudno's Church

It was too cold and windy yesterday morning to hold the St. Tudno's Day service in the open air, so the church was packed with more than 100 people.  We were pleased to welcome to St. Tudno's the Mayor and Mayoress of Llandudno, Miss Alice Llandudno, the Holy Trinity choir and congregation and a number of visitors.  Thanks to the Friends of St. Tudno's Church for all their work with the preparation and refreshments.

The open air services continue at the usual time of 11.00 am, from Sunday 12 June to Sunday 25 September.

The next service at St. Tudno's will be Compline by Candlelight on Tuesday 7 June at 7.30 pm.  These services are held once a month in the summer and you can find a full list of services on the parish website at:

Boer War Remembrance

On Saturday 12 November at 9.00 am wreaths will be laid at the South African War Memorial in St. Tudno's churchyard.  In 2009 the Lions Club of Llandudno were responsible for restoring the memorial as a fitting remembrance to the men of Llandudno and district who lost their lives in this conflict and the Lions now organise wreath laying at the Memorial each year.

The photograph is from the re-dedication of the memorial in 2009.

On Saturday 12 November a wreath was laid at Llandudno’s “other” war memorial to honour men who had died in their country's service in an earlier conflict far from home.  The South African War Memorial in St. Tudno’s churchyard on the Great Orme commemorates four men from the Denbighshire Hussars Imperial Yeomanry and the Royal Welch Fusiliers who died during the 1900-1902 war and was erected by public subscription.  Members of the Lions Club of Llandudno, with some of their families and other supporters, attended a short service of remembrance at St. Tudno’s Church before laying the wreath at the memorial.

Thanks for sorting that out, you two.  It's disappointing how many photos are circulating of the cemetery chapel masquerading as St. Tudno's Church.  I came across one on Wikipedia and there are loads on Google Earth.

St. Tudno's roof

There's good news about the re-roofing of St. Tudno's - the work will begin this month!  The church will therefore be closed from Saturday 18 February until late May, though the churchyard will still be open.

Many thanks to everyone who has supported the Friends of St. Tudno's (http://www.llandudno-parish.org.uk/st_tudno_friends.html) fundraising efforts.  If you would still like to take part in Sponsor-a-Slate, please would you do so by the end of February.  Forms are available on the Sponsor-a-Slate page (http://www.llandudno-parish.org.uk/st_tudno_friends.html#Sponsor-a-Slate) of the parish website, or send me a PM.

We at i61 Church are delighted to announce our forthcoming change of address. Having originally started out a pub in Conwy six years ago, for the last twenty-four months we have been meeting in Ysgol John Bright.  Now we are on the move again, this time to Cineworld in Llandudno Junction! From the 11th of March, everyone and anyone will be welcome to come and catch a service with us, our ‘showing times’ are every Sunday at 11 AM. For more information, please visit our website www.i61.org (http://www.i61.org) or alternatively download the free i61 app from the iTunes store.

Senior Pastor Steve Houghton explains the church’s “Down To Earth Spirituality” tag-line:

“i61 is a contemporary church for unchurched people, in other words those who wouldn’t usually want to enter a church building. So we are incredibly excited to bring to them a place where they can enjoy the big-screen experience and amazing sound of Cineworld, as well as the friendly, family atmosphere of our church.”

The re-roofing and restoration work has now been completed and this was achieved without any grant aid.  Many thanks to everyone who supported Sponsor-a-Slate and other fundraising efforts, your support is greatly appreciated.

The church is now open every day and open air services are held at 11.00 am each Sunday till the end of September.

On Sunday 1 July there will be a special service at 3.00 pm to celebrate the restoration of the church.  Everybody is welcome and it is hoped that many supporters of Sponsor-a-Slate will be able to attend.  Although the name on "your" slate will not be visible, you will be able to see your entry in one of the Books of Sponsors.

Further information can be found on the St. Tudno's page  (http://www.llandudno-parish.org.uk/sttudno.html) of the parish website.

Here are some photos (taken by my sister) at the Service of Thanksgiving and Rededication on 1 July.  The service began outside with a procession around the church.  We apologise to anyone who was unable to get inside the church due to the high numbers who attended.

The Books of Sponsors, listing the names on all sponsored slates and any accompanying messages, will be available for viewing before or after services at St. Tudno's Church (http://www.llandudno-parish.org.uk/sttudno.html) until the end of September.  After that they will be transferred to the drier atmosphere at Holy Trinity Church, where arrangements can be made to view the books after services.

Open Air Songs of Praise

St. Tudno's Church

Sunday 26 August, 4.00 pm

The hymns have been chosen by members of the congregation, who will be introducing their hymns.  If the weather is bad, the service will be in the church.

The morning open air services continue at 11.00 am each Sunday until the end of September.

There is now a new notice board advertising St. Tudno's, under the colonnade opposite the Grand Hotel.  The parish rents this wall space from the Mostyn Estate and also used to rent a second advertising space which was described as "on the Great Orme".  Nobody is sure where this was but I wonder whether it was by the hairpins below St. Tudno's.  Can anyone remember this or, even better, does anyone have an old photo which shows a notice?

Fester, you've beaten me to it.  Thanks for giving the times, TheMedz.  I can confirm that the details are as follow.

Carols by Candlelight

St. Tudno's Church, Great Orme

Sunday 23 December, at 3.00 pm and at 5.00 pm.

There are two services as the service is popular but the church is small.  Please note that there is no heating in the church, though the welcome will be warm.  The paths will be lit, weather permitting, but a torch may still be useful if you are attending the 5.00 pm service.  There will be retiring collections in aid of the Archbishop of Wales' Fund for Children, which supports children's projects throughout Wales.

If you have not been to one of these services, this is a photo from the 5.00 pm service last year.

Hope to see some of you there!

By the way, it would take VERY bad weather to make us cancel the services, which still went ahead during the snow of 2010.

This morning's service at Holy Trinity Church included the laying up of the standard of the North West Wales branch of the British Korean Veterans' Association.

The standard will be placed in the Church's Memorial Chapel.

A number of similar associations have done the same in recent years as membership declines due mainly to advancing years and the deaths of their members.
There are therefore several standards and banners in the Church's Memorial Chapel and these can be viewed by the general public when the church is open during weekdays as well as at weekends.

Born2run  - I'm afraid I don't know very much about the Centre Stage Theatre Company. However they appear to be based in Prestatyn and this is their 30th year as a performing ensemble.

Brian, I will try and find out.

I understand it's due to work by Dwr Cymru/Welsh Water. Whether it's connected to the Alexandra Hotel as DaveR suggests, I don't know.

I hear Bob Griffths, vicar of Llanrhos, leaves soon to be Archdeacon of Wrexham.  Good luck to him in his new role, I'm sure he will be much missed in the area.
