Title: Royal Mail
Post by: Nemesis on December 20, 2010, 08:54:40 am
It has just been announced on Tudno FM that there are to be no mail deliveries today in Llandudno, the Junction and other local areas.
Items may be collected from the Maedu depot

My paperboy has managed to deliver my newspapers Saturday, Sunday and this morning no later than he normally delivers.

I also saw the milkman delievering as usual on Liddell Park at 3.30am this morning.

I've just come back from the shop/ Post office at Colwyn Heights and the mail in the pillar box outside the shop is level with the letter box opening. Apparently the post hasn't been collected for four days and there are other sacks of mail in the Post Office awaiting collection.
4 X 4 vehicles are going up Wentworth Avenue and I would have thought that the Post Office would have at least one 4 X 4 vehicle that can pick up the mail,

I visted Deganwy Post Office this morning. The mail is still there from Friday afternoon, including all the Special Delivery Items. Friday evening was very bad, but the main roads were cleared on Saturday, so you would have thought they could have collected from those Post Offices on the main roads.

They also haven't received there secure delivery of money or stock from Post Office Ltd. Which means due to the limited amount of money allowed to be held that they could be running out of money within a couple of days.

Royal Mail - Disruption to delivery services
Llandudno sorting office are ONLY delivering to the main roads that have been gritted for the remainder of this week. However customers are able to collect any goods from the sorting office as long as they take a VALID FORM OF IDENTIFICATION with them.

Recieved the above this afternoon via the Council Postmaster system.

My road won't have thawed out until Easter,  so I had better set off with my passport.

I went to Maesdu office at 7.15am today.... and waited 10 minutes while they searched , only to be told there was nothing for me.

I asked them to double check as I KNEW that various items had been sent to me.... and after another 10 minutes wait,  mysteriously 7 items were handed to me.

When I queried why this happened, I was just told ..''take a look in there mate, its piled high...chaos''

Thats not a good reason to send people away empty handed (which did happen to several others while I was there)  ...

So.... don't accept the first answer if its a NO.

Yes That's a point !  My OH asked how busy it was and was told there was a queue. It isn't a very big office, so I should wrap up warmly !

The letter pigeon holes will all be full to overflowing, that's true, but it's incumbent upon them to make every effort to find the stuff for those who make the time and effort needed to reach the sorting offices.  However, as always, it's down to the quality of the individuals manning the desks.

Whereas I can empathise to a certain extent, the Post Office 's performance during this recent poor weather has been abysmal. What was probably a justifiable decision to avoid going out for the first day  has snowballed ( sorry!) into a situation that appears to be chaos. There is no justification for avoiding deliveries in many places where a delivery hasn't been made in days and now the situation has gone out of control through the sheer weight of post at this time of year.
This is another nail in the coffin for snail mail and I too might resort to electronic communication in the future
Title: Re: Royal Mail
Post by: Fester on December 21, 2010, 09:56:11 am
I agree Bri.
But sadly they haven't yet invented an electronic way of getting the contents of my parcels to materialize in my house.

We've just been to the delivery office, road clear to the visitors car park only 3 spaces plus 2 disabled, so had to park in their drive! a few people waiting and I got 3 letters i'm sure there must be more! Yesterday we had a delivery by courier with no problem at all, I imagine its down to health and safety and not wanting to compensate injured postmen, all part of the mad world we live in  :rage:

Apparently the Royal Mail have left it up to their carriers as to if they think its safe for them to deliver or not.

I've done some work at the RMG in Chesterfield and the staff their are beyond despondent for a variety of reasons. It really does seem as if the Royal Mail is down for the count and the vultures are circling overhead.

Just collected quite a big pile of mail and 1 parcel. Busy but not heaving. Chatting to a postman outside, a postman broke his ankle, the other day so health and safety have said they can't deliver to anywhere not gritted.
Title: Re: Royal Mail
Post by: Nemesis on December 21, 2010, 02:06:25 pm
The doorbell rang at about noon and there stood our usual postman with a pile of mail and two parcels. Apparently things are being delivered if there are parcels!
Our road and pavements are still lethal so the gritting factor didn't enter into it. How odd-- perhaps they are running out of space. Silly thing was one of the parcels was a free sample of doggie treats. Bet they wouldn't have delivered that if they'd known.  Result--- one very pleased pup ! ;D

Post by: Bri Roberts on December 21, 2010, 03:14:21 pm
I’ve been to the Royal Mail Sorting Office and I agree the car park is full but actually there were only half a dozen local residents collecting their post.

There were three or four lads on the counter.

They were all cheerful and fairly quick to gather a few items of post for me and everyone else.

I would imagine the car park must be full of cars belonging to postmen.

I have also driven up Narrow Lane in Llandudno Junction this afternoon where the road is a mix of slush and ice but I could not help noticing the entrance into the new Welsh Assembly Government Building was perfectly clear and it does not appear to have been affected at all by the weather.  *&(

Visted the sorting office today at 4:30pm. The car park was very busy but found a space OK. People were queing out the door and it took about 20 minutes to get served.
I agree Bri, very good happy staff even though not all the customers were.
They weren't answering the phone though, it must have rung continuiously when we were there.
We still didn't get a parcel we have been expecting for the last 8 days.

I just hope Royal Mail don't get an ideas for the future about reducing costs and start only delivering once or twice a week !!!

I'll be trying again on Christmas Eve, I'll put on my hapless face on and see how I get on.

Quite a lot of the postman know me anyway from when we had Deganwy Post Office. They still manage to sort mail from a relative who continues to send cards to our address from 6 years ago.

They are attempting to deliver parcels, so it may be in the back of someones van.

I called for the third time this week around 10.30am and I was told all the letters had gone out with the postmen.

I don't feel any sympathy towards the Post Office whatsoever. The fact we haven't had a delivery in 11 days is ridiculous. I live in llandudno's suburbia.
How come most other businesses, including the likes of DHL, can carry onregardless just shows how pathetic the situation within the Royal mail has become.
I am told it's because the Post office staff are not covered by insurance should they injure themselves on duty. Well, sort it someone, the cost of the post is sufficient to cover all eventualities.
I fear next year the number of cards posted will fall dramatically.
Many of my friends had already declared prior to this year's festive season that their intention was to send an e mail instead  and they would make a charitable donation in lieu of paying out for cards and postage.I was very anti but my attitude has changed. What's the point of receiving a Christmas greeting when it's all over ?

From Conwy Council's website.

Recycling and Refuse Service Disruption Due to Extreme Weather Conditions

Our crews have been back on the road since Thursday 23rd December, collecting refuse and recycling from all areas that have been safe to access, given the weather conditions.

Unfortunately many side roads, hills and inland areas are still inaccessible with our 18-tonne refuse and recycling vehicles.

We will reassess the travel conditions daily and every effort will be made to resume scheduled collections in areas that are clear of snow and ice. We will also be using additional resources to collect from areas that have been missed.

If you have been affected, please leave out your recycling containers and refuse bin for our crew to collect when practical to do so from Monday 27th December. There will be no collections on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. We appreciate the inconvenience that this causes to residents, and are grateful for your patience.

The recycling centres in Mochdre and Abergele are open to the public every day, apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

:o I'm absolutely amazed by the PO issue there but it explains why Clive was sitting fuming with flames coming out of the top of his head when I spoke to him on Skype just before Xmas. He went on and on about not seeing the post for at least a week in Glan Conwy.

I live in the wilds of rural Norfolk in a little village four miles from the nearest small town not much bigger than us. When we were in the direct howl of the north easterly snow blasting winds from Siberia our postman (Jason) was bang on time at 11am everyday without fail, ice and snow bound unclassified roads notwithstanding. We fought and so far have won to keep our village post office and are looking to turn the PO shop into a Community Interest Company run by the village. The post office is wonderful here.  :P :P :P :P :P :P

Strange things are happening, because despite the website statement, the bins on the Gt Orme HAVE now been emptied.... either today, or maybe the 24th because we have been away since Xmas eve morning.

Lucky you, we have had nothing at all since a week last Thursday.  I did catch sight further down the road, of what I thought was a postman but then again they seem to have become extinct round here so I couldn't be sure.

It was our recycling collection due day today - our glass and cans box was emptied OK along with our papers. We had been told not to put garden waste out but there would be a collection of cardboard. What happened? - well nothing actually and as the cardboard was still outside the gate at dusk, I brought it in and will probably resort to taking it to Mochdre.

Oh wouldn't life be good if people did what they said they were going to do, when they said they would do it!!

Received a credit card bill yesterday (my first one from a new card company so I didn't know when the due date should have been) with a payment due date of yesterday and hence no time to pay it. I spent 25 minutes on the phone to get through and explain my situation logically (shout at them!) and eventually they agreed to refund the £12 late/no  payment fee. When I asked why it had taken 25 minutes to get through apparently they have been having thousands of calls from people with the same issue. Always worth a phone call and a rant. Do not accept late payment charges if it was due to late delivery of the statement.

Title: Putting Conwy on the mail
Post by: Blongb on December 31, 2010, 09:10:24 pm
A few years ago I sent a letter to Buckingham Palace asking the Queen to send my Mom and Dad a congratulations Card for their Diamond Wedding Anniversary.

Back came the appropriate form for me to fill in requesting their full details which included the address the card should be sent too, which I did.

A few days later I received another letter from the Palace asking me for their correct address. My sin was to assume because their house was in Llandudno they actually lived in Conwy County, which for some years now has actually been a political reality.

No said the Palace your correct postal address is Gwynedd not Conwy. But they don’t live in Gwynedd say’s I. It doesn’t matter said the Palace put Gwynedd as their address anyway.

Can anyone explain why we have to put Gwynedd on our address, when we all know we don’t live there? It’s not as if there is a massive Post Office sorting office lurking in that lovely part of North Wales is it, as all LL30 mail is sorted over the boarder in Chester.

Do you think it’s worth starting a petition to put CONWY on the post, where it rightly belongs?

I never bother with the County, just put the Town and then Postcode on the letter. It's amazing how many mail databases are still hopelessly out of date after so many years.
Title: Re: Putting Conwy on the mail
Post by: Yorkie on December 31, 2010, 09:28:04 pm
Just what the Royal Mail recommend.  Leave the County OFF and just use the post code.

In fact if you put the house name or number followed by the Post Code the item will be delivered.  That is all that is used for transmission and delivery.

Have any of you had a letter from the Royal Mail regarding new delivery arrangements?

Our postman has been moved to the West Shore and a new young chap has inherited us on top of his usual round.  I've seen two post men pushing a little box on wheels as they now have so much to deliver and our post is now arriving by 3.00p.m.  Hope that they are getting paid overtime.

In the GPO the other day the harradan behind the counter kept snarling at me that they couldn't guarantee delivery because I insisted on first class for a parcel I was sending.  Ho hum nice times we live in.

Yes, it's odd how these 'alterations to service' always seem to result in a decline in service.

Yes, I had the letter too and my post seems to be arriving later.

The posties are being given trolleys so they can do their rounds quicker. This also means that they can carry more post.
This will mean, fewer postmen doing bigger rounds, so later deliveries for a lot of people.
No more bikes either.

Our post has been as late as 4pm some days. Not much good for a business when the collection from the nearest post box  is about the same time !

The postal service down south delivers more junk mail than post. I regularly get latest offers from pizza houses, Currys, lidl etc being delivered by the postie. I stick it all back in the postbox for someone else to waste their time recycling the rubbish.

Such mail has been paid for and helps to keep our postal services operating.  Your action is just creating more work - and cost - must make you feel great. WWW

If you don't want such mail you can opt out the same as you can with the Mail Preference Service.  The Royal Mail web site will give you contact details.

Im glad I'm keeping people in work and fuelling the economy.  $thanx$

Majority of people put these items straight in the recycling bin. I did not subscribe to junk mail so I shouldn't receive it.

I suppose opting out of junk mail will be like choosing to not receive unsolicited sales or marketing calls via the telephone, pointless.

For ages now a weekly classic car newspaper has been delivered on a Wednesday, then last Wednesday no post at all. On Thursday it arrived with a lot of other post, I joked to the postman that it felt like they were storing it until there was enough to deliver. To my amazement he said that was exactly what was happening as a lot of working hours had been cut! Wednesday is here again and no post arrives! I thought it was illegal to delay Her Majesty's Royal Mail? Does that not apply to themselves?  &shake&

So that's what's going on is it?

Title: Re: Royal Mail...................Changes from 06 April

From Monday, April 6, Royal Mail will be making changes to delivery office depot opening and closing hours, as well as deliveries.

The new changes have been put in place to ensure the safest and most reliable service for its customers nationwide.

It follows additional measures put into place on March 24, which include "only one person being allowed in a Royal Mail delivery vehicle at any one time", and an emphasis on postal workers washing their when leaving and entering any Royal Mail buildings.

To minimise contact, a customer signature is no longer required, and packages that are too big to be posted through the letterbox will be left outside the door, our sister title the Liverpool Echo reports.

Here are the stricter guidelines coming into force next week, as stated on the Royal Mail website:

Royal Mail has announced plans to ban traditional stamps as they’re set to be replaced by a new barcode stamp system.

The postal service could also charge people up to £3.50 to receive their post after the ban.
Any parcels or letters with traditional stamps on them after the ban is in place will be left at sorting offices with a “surcharge” added.

People who receive items with the old stamps will receive a “fee to pay” card and be told to collect them from a sorting office.
This extra cost stands at £2 a letter or £3.50 for a small parcel.

Royal Mail said: “Non-barcoded stamps will remain usable until January 31, 2023.
