I note that WR Davies in the Junction appears to have dropped the Chrysler (Jeep) agency for Renault, so now they are Ford and Renault.
According to their website the family owned company was founded at Berriw near Welshpool in 1924 and now have 5 sites including the one in LJ
- it is still a family owned company headed by managing director Jonathan Davies.

PS Ian or Dave - perhaps we should now have a thread "Everything to do with Llandudno Junction" - it is a "mecca" for car showrooms and the home of the North Wales WAG Offices amongst other things.

AND of course only this week it was reported that that famous "watering hole" ie the Station Hotel is not to be sold after all and a new landlady has been appointed.

The loss of the Chrysler franchise cannot be unexpected, sales must have been very poor. The PT Cruiser - nuff said! _))*

It was good to see the Killer aka Station Hotel has reopened after Punch discovered that the valuation of the building was significantly less than they had imagined (I heard it had been valued at less than £500k, when they had paid well over a million for it a couple of years ago). Hopefully, the upstairs rooms will be brought back into use as it would make good budget hotel accommodation and would make it a far more sustainable business..

Yes the new landlady is Jenny Mitchell and she is quoted as saying that she is determined to put the pub back into the heart of the community.

I'm sure we wish her well.

I think apart from being the "mecca" for car sales, the Junction is also a "mecca" for fast food/takeaway outlets, and in my opinion the Jade Garden takes some beating.

The Junction is also a "Mecca"  8) for local Muslims, with the Canolfan Iman Centre being situated on Glyn Y Marl Road.

Once known as Tremarl, before the railway arrived, Llandudno Junction is part of the ancient parish of Llangystennin.

Llandudno Junction station opened on 1st October 1858 when it was included in the timetable for the branch (Llandudno) but not for the main Holyhead - Chester line until 30th October (for the November service). Built by the St. George's Harbour and Railway Company in 1858, this branch line heads north through Deganwy before terminating in Llandudno town. Prior to the completion of the junction station, the branch line trains from Llandudno ran through to Conway. At times the branch was worked by horses owing to financial difficulties (certainly during winter of 1862) but was permanently loco-hauled by October 1863.

The photo shows Llandudno Junction first station around 1895. Actually built by the St .George's Harbour Company, and leased to the LNWR in 1862 to be absorbed 11 years later. The shed closed in 1880 after which it was used as a carriage shed until final closure of the station and demolition.

in 1897 the present station was opened on a much larger site, the two island platforms offering six through lines with two bays at each end.

A few reminders there, particularly for me the level crossing prior to 1966 and the flyover - it's amazing how you forget how some things used to be. Keep them coming.

Marle hall is an interesting building that is often overlooked locally.

The site of Marle Hall dates back to the 1500s where there was originally a monastery. A grand Jacobean mansion thought to have been built in 1661. A fire in the eighteenth century reduced all but the south-east wing to ruins. Through the untiring efforts and vision of William T. Smedley, Secretary of the Birmingham Hospital's Saturday Fund, Marle Hall was rented in 1893, restored and opened in 1894 as a Convalescent Home for Women. Subsequently purchased and equipped for 80 patients by 1903, the Hall  remained a convalescent home for many years. During World War II, the home accommodated children from city areas, and later sick soldiers. In more recent years, Warwickshire County Council converted Marle Hall into the Outdoor Education Centre that it is today.

The exterior ones, early 20th century. The interior scenes, possibly 1920's.

I remember in the late '70's and early 80"s my friends and I used to infiltrate the building and grounds to try and "cop off" with the girls staying there. That Black Country accent sure was a novelty.

Here's Marl Halls' website:

Does anyone remember the ford nearby, that ran across......I'm sure it was Marl Lane. I think it was diverted when they built the expressway connector roads.

It was pretty deep, especially after heavy rain, and I always remember my Father driving slowly through it, then driving with one foot slightly depressed on the brake pedal afterwards to dry his brakes out.

I seem to remember signs nearby telling motorists to "Dry your brakes" or was it "Test your brakes?"
Title: Re: Everything to do with Llandudno Junction
Post by: DaveR on October 19, 2010, 08:44:14 pm
I remember it well, in fact, it was a lovely country lane with the Ford running across it and then alongside the lane for a little while. As you say, crossing the Ford after heavy rain was always a bit of a challenge as the stream swelled up quite a lot and there was always a debate amongst my parents as to whether it was 'safe to cross'.

On the Llandudno side of the lane, next to the Ford, there was a gate and you could follow a path that ran alongside the stream towards what is now the entrance to Bodysgallen Hall.  It was teeming with wildlife and a really pleasant place for a stroll in the Summer - and all destroyed to make way for the A470. So much for progress.

I think the sign said 'Try Your Brakes'.

I remember it was quite a challenge one winter, because as the vehicles crossed the ford, the plashed water either side of the ford froze on contact with the road, so as you slowed ready to cross, the wheels locked up on the ice and you slid across out of control, causing even more water to accumulate and freeze either side of the ford. Quite a few vehicles were damaged as a result. Winter of '62 / '63. I think.

Takes more than a bit of adverse weather to stop Johnny "Pondo" biking to and from Llandudno. Saw him going up through Deganwy towards Llandudno earlier.

"Keep biking Johnny"  but please stay on the side of the road .... and the correct one at that!

 D) Anyone remember the Junction YWCA? Used to bike there from Llandudno every night it was open. Had a good mate, Paul Taylor (now a limo magnate in New York) whose parents owned the tobacconist in Oswald's Buildings. We would regularly go for walks through the gate by the ford in Marl Lane (beautiful place now lost) and a couple of times went for midnight moonlight rambles through Marl Woods to the stone outcrop in the middle. From YWs I particularly remember Benny, who had a complete collection of Frankie Laine 78s, Marilyn Jones, Hilary Jones and Naida Williams. Great place.

"Conwy County Borough Council and the Welsh Assembly Government have prepared a £400,000 Streetscape Enhancement Scheme for Conway Road, as part of the ongoing regeneration of Llandudno Junction. The work involves an overall upgrade of Conway Road, including clearing overgrowth, tackling unsightly areas and providing new planting. Pavements will be refurbished and renewed where needed and new streetlamps, signage and new street furniture will be installed."

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't all this area completely refurbished a few years ago when Tesco opened - new pavements, street lighting, signage etc? What has Llandudno Junction got that other parts of the County haven't? After all, places like Rhos On Sea haven't seen any work whatsoever in the last 20+ years! Answers on a postcard please to Mike Priestley, the Cabinet Member for the Environment, c/o his Llandudno Junction ward....  :o

Not professional - I think he used to play for Conwy. But I did hear he had trials at Manchester United - I think went to the academy or something but left because he was homesick - he knows a lot about football, he often winss bets at the bookies

I think you're right in saying the machine shop was the last to close.

Christmas time was always eventful around the pubs in Llandudno when Hotpoint & Quinton Hazell worker's were on their 'Christmas doo's'. Quinton Hazell is still going but only has a fraction of the workforce that it once had.

This must be the Junction Hotpoint's most famous employee. He worked there when he was 17 years old:

My mate Harry Lees who joined with me got in with the union in a big way. Ended up the Regional Secretary of GMB in the South West. Now lives in luxurious retirement in Cornwall. Work is going on at the old "Netto" converting it to Asda. I think it was said it would be closed for about a couple of weeks before opening up under new management and livery.

Although the store is smaller than Tesco, it should be interesting to see what effect as an Asda, it will have on "the every little helps" establishment just over the railway line!

"The Welsh Government will consider this week a plan to close some of its 28 offices across the country. The cabinet will be discussing an ‘options paper’ with the aim said to be to ‘reduce occupancy costs’ by 35%.

The government’s spent a lot of money in recent years on new buildings in Llandudno Junction, Aberystwyth and Merthyr Tydfil. My understanding is that the plan would see more work from smaller offices transferred in future to fill empty capacity in those three larger bases."

The more people that work in the WG building in Llandudno Junction the better, they will all have to live locally and spend their salaries in the area.

Looks like it's going to be congested trying to into Tesco at busy times for the next four months as the Black Cat service station is now closed. It will apparently be demolished, and redeveloped (as a service station etc) and it is hoped to open again in November.

Yesterday afternoon it was difficult to get to the Tesco store because of the queue for the petrol station!

Hi , I'm new to this site , I'm investigating a military aircraft accident which happened near the ford way back in Feb 1944 ...5 fatalities ..and have recently contacted three eye witnesses to this tragic event, but we need to clarify exactly where the plane came down ( into a pond/bog which does not exsist anymore due to the culvert being built to prevent any more flooding in the Meadows estate nearby ....if anyone can supply me with an early aerial shot of the Marl Hall or the surrounding area please forward it on here .

I have these postcard pics of the Ford (you can follow my progress in this investigation on my FB ) .....
I'm hoping to do a talk on this some time next Sept.2012 for the Grwp Hanes Deganwy History Group ..which is advertised regularly in the N.W.W.News once a month under Deganwy ...anyone with any information can please forward here or on our web site...

I was lucky enough to be invited along earlier today to the site and it was very interesting to hear the accounts from two of the three eye witnesses about this 1944 accident.

One individual recalled seeing the aeroplane in difficulty somewhere between Maesdu Golf Club and the Deganwy Vardre while the other gentleman remembered seeing a parachute hanging from a tree very near Marl Stream after the crash.

I wish Gwyn well with his research and also listening to his talk later next year.

Meanwhile, I hope Gwyn’s post above will help jog the memories of some of our older forum members and encourage them to come forward with further information to assist Gwyn.

Hi Mike, Conway. I have located a reference on my records regarding the enquiry which you made regarding an Avro Anson which crashed at Marl Farm, Llandudno Junction, on the 15 February 1944. The information I have reads as follows: '18th February 1944: Part of an aircraft found on the foreshore at Colwyn Bay. Believed to have dropped off a bomber which crashed at Llandudno Junction, in Caernarvonshire'. Further comments are 'This refers to Avro Anson No N5180 which crashed at Marl Farm, Llandudno Junction, 15th February 1944'. I hope this information assists you in your enquiry. Regards TOL

Has there ever been a record kept of an Avro Anson which crashed near Marl Farm, Llandudno Junction around 44/45? The aircraft was on a navigational training. I saw it crash. It seemed that the aircraft was over stressed. As the wings were torn off outboard of the engines whilst in the air. The noise it made when the wings came off was just like a large vehicle skidding with all its wheels locked. The aircraft tipped vertically nose down and dived straight into the ground, killing all on board.

That's a shame. The subject came up often when I worked there in the 90s but it never came to fruition, looks like their luck has finally run out. It was proposed that they run the operation from the trading estate in Junction so I guess a similar thing will now happen.

I never bought the NWWN this morning but have just read the item on their website.
I can't see how they can run the whole operation from Bangor without having some buses based more locally to cover the earliest of local/Llanrwst services otherwise there will be a lot of dead mileage moving empty buses into place first thing each morning.
I wonder if the drivers are being financially compensated for the extra mileage costs they will now have to incur each day to get to/from work? Somehow I think I sadly know the answer!

I see from today's NWWN and DP that the proposal to build a big VAG dealership on the old Hotpoint site has been turned down - the local councillor saying that it would not create enough new jobs for the locals.

... so, I wonder how many jobs were promised for the Welsh Assembly building, how many people are actually working in the building and how many were taken on as new employees from the local area?

... or doesn't that comparison count?
Title: Re: Everything to do with Llandudno Junction

I think the problem with the Hotpoint site was that a significant number of the jobs mentioned were just transferred from elsewhere in North Wales, rather than new jobs being created, which is a valid point, I think.

So the site remains empty creating NO JOBS. Where's the sense in that?
Title: Re: Everything to do with Llandudno Junction
Post by: DVT on December 13, 2012, 08:21:29 pm
True ... some of the jobs would be for people transferred from other relatively local areas - but that is due to certain major dealerships losing their VAG franchises ... so the new dealership would be keeping those jobs in the area, along with a few new vacancies, rather than the people made redundant having to go elsewhere or join the dole queue.

You wouldn't expect any company to come in and all the staff be new recruits would you?

The Welsh Assembly promised, if I remember correctly, 900 jobs with many new vacancies for the locals.  How many actually work in there - about half that number.  How many are new recruits from the locality - very few, if any - most were transferred from other Assembly establishments.

Here is a major company willing to invest in the area and be turned down.  Seems any way of improving the area is seen as retrograde by those people we have elected to look after our locality.

Sad to say the Daily Post today reports that Johnny 'Pondo' Williams died on Tuesday after a short illness. He was 67.

Well known locally in recent years for his biking between the Junction and Llandudno and his eccentric 'dancing' on the roadside or pavement.

I heard yesterday that the Student Loans Company have taken over one of the wings in the Welsh Government building in the Junction as "paying tenants".  They previously had offices on Princes Drive in Colwyn Bay so I'm guessing they're just transferring jobs rather than creating new ones in the area.

I've passed through the Junction a couple of times today where there was an event called the Trakz Busking Festival taking place.  There were musicians and groups performing in different locations through the village, a marching band all decked out in the kilts, circus performers and other events including a table top sale (I didn't buy one as our table already has a top) and a hog roast.  I even saw a mayor of some undetermined flavour.  The second time around I walked from one end of the village of the other and listened to about half a dozen live acts of varying quality.  My favourite was a three piece band (guitar, bass, drums) playing outside the Maelgwyn who did a decent version of White Room, the guitarist looked a bit like an accountant but he managed to sound reasonably Claptonesque.  At the other end of the scale was a woman warbling Vera Lynn songs outside the Mercedes garage either unware or unconcerned that her audience was comprised of one very bored looking steward.  There seemed to be plenty of people knocking about, or knocking back pints outside the pubs, and all in all there was a great atmosphere.  The weather played ball as well.

I have to congratulate the organisers on putting together a great community event and hope this becomes an annual event which goes from strength to strength.  If it's on next year I'll be leaving the car at home and joining the people outside the pubs  Z**.  And best of all they put together an highly enjoyable festival without having to introduce a single rip-off fairground ride into the equation  $thanx$.

Fair comment.

We took the bus over and spent a couple of hours there.

We also spent a pleasant half an hour in Marl Gardens (where the monkey hut used to be) watching the circus performers.

They were excellent and it was a joy to see the smiles on the faces of all the young children.

It is their first year and the organisers are to be congratulated on getting the event off the ground for the Junction.

I sincerely hope the event will go from strength to strength and we shall certainly be supporting it again next year.

Plans for £40million supermarket development in Llandudno Junction set to be given green light

Representation has also been received by Conwy Council from Mostyn Estates Ltd and others.    I don't suppose that Mostyn Estates objected to the Co-op in Deganwy but perhaps they don't own the freehold at Llandudno Junction and that's why.
While the people in Deganwy I've spoken to are very pleased with the Co-op, competition could be a good thing for prospective customers in the area.

I have just been on the planning website to have a look at the proposed new supermarket on the old brickworks site and it's very interesting. Tesco are objecting and urging the Planning Committee to refuse planning permission but they would wouldn't they as they would loose an awful lot of customers. Then Pizza Hut who also object don't appear to be happy either as the developer hasn't consulted them about the proposal to demolish their existing site and subsequent relocation to a new unit. Poor McDonalds is seething as the new main entrance to the whole site will be directly from the roundabout on the junction with the A55 and the public will come to 3 other food outlets before them. At the moment they are in a prominent position.
I was hoping this was going to be a quick decision at the planning meeting on Wednesday 10th as our Planning Application for building up here on Sychnant Pass will be heard straight after the Llandudno Junction Supermarket. So it looks like we are in for a long wait then.  :(

Local rumour has it as Sainsbury's, which would make sense as the nearest one is Rhyl, with Morrisons being in Colwyn Bay it's a bit near unless they intend closing that one. I wish it was Waitrose Dave as I'm getting fed up at the traffic problems when shopping at Menai Bridge store.

You may or may not be aware that right now one of the best wildlife spectacles in the world is happening right here. You need to get down to Llandudno Junction and either park in the RSPB estuary car park( the main one is shut after 5.00pm) or park in Tesco's or the cinema and walk across to the RSPB.
As many as 30,000 starlings roost in the reed beds at the reserve but before landing they fly around in an ever increasing numbers as new arrivals fly in from afar each evening.
These murmurations can be absolutely incredible.

Best to get there soon as they will soon be heading off to their breeding grounds.
The numbers start to arrive from 5.45 onwards and they drop in to the reeds just before dark.

Llandudno Junction £40m superstore plan moves a step closer

A £40 million superstore and restaurant complex is a step closer to reality after the proposals cleared a major hurdle in the planning process.
Conwy County Borough Council gave outline planning permission to the scheme in Llandudno Junction last month but the Welsh Government wanted to decide whether to “call it in” because it was so important.
Now the Welsh Government has decided that the scheme is only of “local” importance” and decided against ruling on it themselves.

Tesco and Morrisons had claimed the scheme would harm local town centres.
The owner of the Junction Leisure Park (Legal & General), which would see a road cut across their site and Pizza Hut relocated, also wrote to object along with Llandudno landowner Mostyn Estates, Parc Llandudno and fast food giants McDonald’s and KFC.

This latest move from the Welsh Government helps paves the way for an operator to develop the former Brickworks Site on Tre Marl Industrial Estate.
Several chains ruled themselves out before outline planning permission was secured for a superstore unit, petrol filling station, four restaurant units, including one to replace an existing one. There would also be a link road to the A55.

The Welsh Government said that although there are “issues concerning the retail impact” the council “appears to have satisfied itself of the proposal’s possible benefits”.
It adds that a flood risk for up to a quarter of the site can be managed.

Clare Dicks, a decisions manager acting on behalf of the Minister for Natural Resources, told Conwy Council on March 24 that the issues are local.
She wrote: "In view of this, I do not consider that the application should be called in for determination by the Welsh Ministers and it is now for your council to determine the application as it sees it."

Cllr Chris Cater, Conwy Council planning committee chairman, told the Daily Post: "The application has been approved and will go ahead."
Local Cllr Meirion Hughes, said “on balance” the scheme would be a “good thing” for Llandudno Junction with the creation of up to 300 jobs.

It is believed that one condition of any supermarket firm taking on the site would be that they would not be allowed to run a Post Office. There is already a branch on Conway Road in Llandudno Junction.
But he urged caution.
He added: “It’s still down to the markets and whether there’s somebody out there who wants it (the site).”

Cllr Mike Priestley, who also represents Llandudno Junction, said he is concerned for the existing traders in the area.
He said: “It’s fair to say a lot of businesses in Llandudno Junction have got hardened to the effects of Tesco but I agree we need some sort of protection for businesses in Llandudno Junction.”

The project is being developed by Conygar Investment Company PLC.

Llandudno Junction Premier Inn wants 22 bedroom extension due to surging demand.

The company says that the hotel close to the A55 is one of the best performing in the region in terms of occupancy.
Now they want to add another 22 bedrooms to the hotel to meet demand - taking the total number of rooms to 81.

The firm says it will create extra jobs at the hotel and also further support the attached Afon Conwy restaurant.
Under the plans they would add an extension to the existing hotel site.
A spokesman said: "The proposed extension will create new jobs, both during the construction phase and in the form of additional hotel and restaurant staff in reception, room maintenance, building maintenance and security.

"Additional visitors to the area will also generate income for local businesses in the wider area, as some guests will look beyond the site to spend their time, take meals, and other purchases."

Premier Inn is also due to start work on a £10m project to redevelop the Tudno Castle hotel in Llandudno

Hello Bellringer. I thought it was closing end of September, not December.
Never mind. This makes me feel old. In the late 1950's I worked on the counter in Barclays, Conwy. We had several business customers from the junction. One, John Chard, used to walk every day rom the Ffyes bananas storage to us. All used to moan constantly that the Junction had Midland and Nat.Prov but no Barclays. So eventually, around about 1968 Barclays gave in and opened in the present building.

Hello Mike. My letter definitely says Friday 2 December.
I worked in local Barclays branches from 1983 till retirement in 1995 but mainly 84 Mostyn Street.
I was interested a while ago when you posted about working in the Conwy branch, premises which are now Edwards the Butchers. So in recent years Barclays has closed branches at Old Colwyn, Rhos on Sea, Conwy and now the Junction. Of course there was also the sub branch at the Dolgarrog Aluminium works which operated on a couple of days a week. That closed quite a while before the works closed down.
How things change!

First I have ever heard about the Aluminium works. But I do remember my Dad who at that time was manager at Rhos trying hard to get a counter in the Ministry of Food Meat and livestock offices. Newly built in Dinerth Road. Now as far as I know local government offices. I think he fancied something like two days a week, but it never came to anything because by around the end of the 1940s the Min of Food had all moved back to Guildford their home at the start of the war.

Travellers have set up camp at a Llandudno Junction car dealership.

They arrived at about 6pm on Sunday at Premier Toyota’s site on the Tre Marl industrial estate.
Three caravans and four other vehicles arrived after apparently being moved on by police from another site on the estate.

North Wales Police confirmed they were aware of the trespass, but said it is a civil matter for the business to pursue.

A spokesman for the Premier Toyota dealership said: “The police had moved them on from somewhere else on the estate and, instead of going off, they came onto our site.
“The local police were here first thing this morning, but it’s a trespass and it’s not in their jurisdiction.”

The owner of the Cineworld site in Llandudno Junction wants to build three more restaurants in the car park.
Legal and General(L&G) have submitted a plan to Conwy council for the extra eating places located on Junction Leisure Park, next to the existing Pizza Hut and McDonald's restaurants.

But the application could impact on the planned access road to a separate £40m development for a large superstore and three other restaurants on land next door.
That project - which would include an access road across the leisure park site - was approved by Conwy planners earlier this year despite opposition from L&G.

Developer says £40m Llandudno Junction supermarket project on track for 2017 start.
The 300 job scheme includes a superstore and restaurants and could be open by 2019

The 300 job scheme includes a superstore and restaurants and could be open by 2019

A developer has dropped a £40m supermarket and restaurants development that was tipped to create 300 jobs.

Conygar Investment Company had secured planning permission for the project on the Old Brickworks site in Llandudno Junction in 2016 despite considerable opposition.

“The outlook for retailers is difficult and we believe that we will be unable to deliver the retail park as planned.
“However, we hope to devise alternative schemes for the site.”

Robert Ware, Chief Executive of The Conygar Investment Company, said: “Things have changed, we had retailers like M&S and Next who were interested in coming here but you can read in the press what is happening in this sector. The commercial world can change very quickly and we have to adapt to that.

“It means going back and looking again at this site.
“The council want it cleaned up and used for creating jobs.
“We need to assess other options, which could be a different type of retail development or possibly logistics as this is an ideal location."  ref DP

The last of the old north Wales weekly news has gone in the crusher this week, looking at the planning portal it appears that the road access issues have been addressed. On a separate issue does anyone know what is happening to the Rochelle development at the bottom of junction hill ?.I had heard from a waterboard employee they had built too close to water and foul drain.

Llandudno Junction Cineworld is to close with the company set to close all its UK sites in the coming weeks.

The closures come as the release of the latest James Bond film was further delayed from November to spring 2021, the PA news agency understands.

The closure of its 128 sites across the country will put up to 5,500 jobs at risk.

Reports that it is hoped that the Cineworld cinemas will be able to reopen next year, with staff being asked to accept redundancy in the hope of rejoining the company when theatres open again.

THE FUTURE of an outdoor learning centre used by generations of Warwickshire youngsters hangs in the balance.

Since it was bought by Warwickshire County Council in 1971, young people across the county have visited Marle Hall in Llandudno for educational, adventure courses.

A scheme to redevelop Llandudno Junction’s brickworks site is back on the agenda after councillors rubber-stamped a new management plan.

Conwy county council’s cabinet today (Tuesday) agreed to form a management team to look at redeveloping the site and build a new waste transfer station.

Part of the plan is to also look at the future of Conwy Business Centre, which sits behind Junction Leisure Park.

It means there could eventually be new development on the Tremarl Industrial Estate, which sits on part of the Old Brickworks site, possibly including retail development, a new waste transfer station and a serious look at the future of the Conwy Business Centre.

Gwinllan Conwy owners Colin and Charlotte Bennett are celebrating a prestigious bronze medal from the Decanter World Wine Awards, having achieved two bronze medals at the International Wine Challenge (IWC) earlier this year.

That takes their haul to 17 medals in national and international competitions since launching the company.

Add to that a place in the UK Grand Final of the Countryside Alliance Awards – they won the Local Food and Drink Class for Wales – and the future looks bright for the vineyard, based in Llangwstenin, Llandudno Junction.

Colin and Charlotte first planted a quarter of an acre in 2012 and by 2016 were ready to release their first wine.

The Pefriog and Solaris varieties have been lauded by critics and customers, as have their tours and support of independent North Wales producers, but the couple insist the best is yet to come.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have won these awards and to receive so much positive feedback and goodwill,” said Colin.

“But for us the most important thing is always the customers, and the quality of the wine we produce here in Conwy.

“Year on year we double in size and that looks set to continue as we prepare to launch a limited-edition range of classic wines following experimentation with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay flavours, so watch this space.”

A PLANNING application for a proposed 16m-tall monopole to be situated in Deganwy has been turned down by the Conwy County Borough Council planning committee.

The 16m-high Phase 8 monopole, with a wraparound cabinet at the base, was proposed by CK Hutchison Networks (UK) Ltd to be situated on Marl Lane.

The development looked to enhance 5G coverage levels and network capacity within the Deganwy area.

At a planning committee meeting on January 12, following a site visit the previous day, members voted unanimously 12-0 in favour of the refusing the application.

A mansion that was closed down as an outdoor education centre last year is now going up for auction.

Marle Hall, off the A470 in Llandudno Junction, was first built in the 17th Century by Sir Hugh Williams, 5th Baronet, of the Williams baronets of Penrhyn, but was later expanded and renovated.

Now it is on the market with Savills and will go to auction next month............The site will go to auction on March 2.

If you are using the Llandudno Junction car wash on Conwy Road, please be advised that you must NOT stop on the pavement in your vehicle or block the road.

This is dangerous and could cause an accident.

West Conwy Neighbourhood policing team will be in the area in the coming days/weeks ensuring the traffic is flowing. If you are found to be causing an obstruction you may face a fine.

We do not want to ticket car wash customers although, we have received a number of reports within the past week to complain about this issue.

Keep the roads safe, be sensible when an area is busy & keep the traffic flowing at all times to prevent an accident from happening.

The site of a former Llandudno Junction school could be transformed into a purpose-built medical centre, a councillor believes.

Ysgol Nant y Coed went up in flames in November 2019 after an arson attack, and the school was subsequently demolished.

But now Cllr Mike Priestley has claimed talks on a medical centre are ongoing between Conwy County Council, who own the site, and Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

Ysgol Nant y Coed was one of two Llandudno Junction schools that closed when the new purpose-built Ysgol Awel y Mynydd opened in September 2017.

Cllr Mike Priestley says Llandudno Junction has suffered due to a strain on health care services, caused by the number of new homes built in the area in recent years.

Cllr Priestley said: “Conversations are going on. I’ve spoken to Betsi Cadwaladr, and they’ve said they are looking at a number of sites, one of which is the Ysgol Nant y Coed site, and I just want to put all my support behind the facility there to support the community.

“While we have the opportunity, we can provide something that will be a real benefit to our community. We’ve given so much green fields and so much space for new houses, I think it is about time we had a brownfield site for the community.

Cineworld announces cinemas at risk of closure including two in North Wales
Cineworld's sites in Llandudno Junction and Broughton Retail Park are at risk of closure

Cineworld has announced a list of more than 100 cinemas that are at risk of closure, including two in North Wales. The cinema chain announced financial struggles last year when they were forced to file for bankruptcy in the US.

Among the sites which could face closure are Llandudno Junction and Broughton - two of North Wales' most popular cinema complexes. The company said it had been under pressure due to the pandemic, and fell into administration last autumn.

Months on from announcing it was "assessing options to shore up its finances," Cineworld has given an update which puts 129 of its sites across the UK and Ireland at risk. Yesterday, the cinema giant said they had been approached by a ?number? of potential suitors interested in a takeover,

Cineworld posted on Facebook to explain the situation. They said: "As some of you are already aware we have new parking restriction for the car park that will be taking place from next week. We do realise that the restrictions in place do state that it is a maximum of a 3 hour stay. However, please don?t worry!

"We will have a tablet inside of the cinema which you will need to enter your car details into upon your arrival. This will allow you to extend your stay free of charge! We know that many of you love to come for a meal before your film or like to watch as many as you can in one day and the 3 hours just would not be enough."
