Whilst in Conwy this morning, I sneaked up a little alleyway for a close up look at the old Cockpit, just off Lancaster Square. Shame to see just a historic little building in a poor state. "An eighteenth century cylindrical cockpit later converted to a chapel of rest and now redundant."Where is this building, although I live in Conwy I'm actually from Pen. I am really interested in local history. I thought the cockpit was the building behind the big wooden gates across from the Albion, or is this just a different view ? I've just found the hidden garden in Conwys cemetery, in the summer the whole enclosure is covered in cherries.
If you stand outside Alfredos, you'll see a passageway to the left of it. Walk a few steps up the passage and the cockpit will be in front of you.Whilst in Conwy this morning, I sneaked up a little alleyway for a close up look at the old Cockpit, just off Lancaster Square. Erm no its in St Marys church yard, if I tell you where it is on here it won't be a secret garden any more ;) I'd heard about it before but could obviously never find it, so I enquired with an old friend and he showed me, its best seen in summer when the cherries are out. Do you mean the large overgrown section of graveyard on St Agnes Road? I've explored that too, if that's the one you mean. *&(

This is a 'Catch all' thread for snippets of news/info concerning Conwy that don't really deserve their own thread.Just got my free tickets for the Conwy Feast, luv it. Loads of excellent stalls, my son and I just munch our way round. Its not cheap mind, I understand they have to charge for the event but the food on sale is very expensive. When you think its a fiver to get in and £3.50 a block of cheese it adds up. My favourite stall is the indian guys who sell all the nuts, There used to be lads selling all the noodles but they weren't there last year. You can also sample the new ales from the local micro breweries like Purple Moose and Gwyns Conwy ales. I wonder why they dont utilise Bodlondeb field though. Anyway Chocolate fountain here I come can't wait.
It's on the weekend of the 23/24 October. There is a website at www.conwyfeast.co.uk (http://www.conwyfeast.co.uk) but it doesnt seem to be working for me at present.Nice one, but step away from the chocolate fountain lol
That is good news. Z**Not sure who's taking that over. The window was smashed in the door before it shut. I've always liked the Mailcoach. Can get really busy there and did have a good crowd of regulars when Kevin Mcardle and Dave were landlords. Relies heavily on food sales, thats the way forward with the Mail.
Stalls are along the quay, on the square and up the high street, you have to pay £5 for the day to enter most of the tents. Everything from tutorials to a champagne and Oyster tent, You can even see Tree dressing ( not sure what this mind) its an excellent weekend and well worth a visit.
The Conwy Feast website still doesn't seem to be working, I know it is on Oct 23/24th but not much else e.g. where the stalls will be situated etc. never having been to it before!
the Albion has been bought by the Conwy Brewery.
If it is Gwyn thats bought it, he will keep the bar I'm sure. He always used to comment on it when he came in. I'll be made up if it him as he will keep the pub as it is,
Not strictly Conwy related but...I saw today that Punch Taverns are selling up to 1,800 of their pubs. I'm wondering which ones locally they own?
I'm wondering which ones locally they own?In Conwy they own Albion Vaults, Blue Bell and George and Dragon. Glan Conwy its the Estuary, Llandudno Junction, they own the Killer, I was told they own the Maelgwyn too but I don't think thayts right. Llandudno its The Gresham and the Alex as far as I'm aware.
I saw today that Punch Taverns are selling up to 1,800 of their pubs.Yes thats right but they're also investing 38m in their managed sector, all this means is they'll now work you like a dog, you'll get wages every week but at least you won't lose your deposit and lease money. Basically now you'll do all the work and they will get all the profit.
What a shame. :( I think its quite likely that Punch will put the Mailcoach up for sale, as well.

AHH.............. The Dispersal Order. As I remember the police didn't actually inform the kids of this. They put leaflets on lamp posts, which teenagers do not read! The first they knew was when they were escorted mob handed by Pc Parminter out of the town. I also remember that the trouble was then diverted from within the walls where there is CCTV, to the outskirts where there is none. Local residents kicked off even more, especially those who lived on the Morfa and up Pen Garth etc. Although within the town walls was considerably quieter the rest of Conwy was not. I suppose it depends where abouts in Conwy you live and whether or not you have young kids.
Another ridiculous idea was a shelter costing £6,000 to be erected in Bodlondeb but heres the best, the council said they would put CCTV in it and send a police officer there to check on the youths randomly, meaning said youths would avoid it like the plauge, as I would have done when I was a teenager. I suggested that for the same money they could pay someone a wage of £125 a week to man the youth club and maybe not close the bloody building over the holidays when the kids are really are bored. Y'know these kids are not arriving on buses every night they actually live here!!!!!!!!
I'm not saying that they're not a pain in the ass, I'm saying we should come up with a constructive solution. Maybe consult the youths first. Escorting youths from within the walls is not a solution I'm afraid.

Is there a good time to go to avoid the crowds but not be drinking at 10:00 in the morning?Yes, 10.01am. Z**
Whiskey infused cheese was a winner.I got the Snowdonia pickle cheese. Testicles du chien mate D)
Two young pcs came to the Albion and I was told "if people were taking drugs in the pub the onus was on us! "
I remember going to an outdoor event in Mona about 4 years ago, I couldn't understand why everyone was outside, until I was told they had this swabbing sysyem. Such a major impact to the town's culture just to save £20k? Seems like a savings that will do more harm than good. Such a shame :(Maybe CCBC are hoping that Conwy Town Council will take over the running of the Hall? And why not, its just the sort of thing they should be doing.
Hmmmm....I know you're from London Yorkie. You don't happen to play the drums do you?

Saw this car on the way to work yesterday morning, bet the poor owner is gutted. ¢¢##
Wonder which building firm built that wall?who would be liable. Was the car legally parked. Would that matter?
Yes the very deep hole is still there. I thought that if the bridge was closed completely on Saturday and Sunday nights, then the work would be completed by Monday am but then again .................................!!
The work has finished on the bridge and so the lights have gone. Back to normal until the next time.....!!We have had 3 faults in the sewage pipe across the bridge since August. Welsh Water, after much persuading, agreed to replace the whole length of pipe. This is why the works were extended.
More recently look at the flats they built as you come through the arch into berry street. Unbelievable, they really are horrid aren't they :( another brown envelope me thinks FesterThey are a disappointment when looking from Berry Street but the backs of them match other buildings quite well if you look from the end of the Town Wall by the Quay. Why they couldn't have built the fronts in the same style as the other houses on Berry Street, I don't know.
Thank-you for the link Dave. I have just spent a couple of very interesting hours on the Listed buildings site updating the information on my place. Perhaps we’ll get more customers next year now I've relocated their Map Marker from the disused Loo's on Happy Valley Road to our place. )*)&

I've an idea what you mean Ian but for those of us who have a jargon deficiency, perhaps you will be kind enough to explain.\
It looks like the Border Agency has been active within the walls this evening.Whereabouts, Tillymint? On Castle Street maybe?
Well there's been going ons in the Mail Coach over this week, hopefully it will open soon, the locals love that pub. For the record no one in Conwy minds who takes it over or where they're from! They objected to the way in which it was first taken from Dave and the boycott by the locals confirmed that. >>>
Amelie? Above the Palace Bingo?
I thought the one in Conwy was owned by the same guy ::)Not any more. Incidentally, the owners, Andrea & Paul, were also leading lights in local band 'Melys'
There's no street light in Conwy again tonight. You don't realise how much difference they make. The streets are pitch black. You can't see the pavement in front of you. I was told last night the council are conserving energy "so if the xmas light are on then the street lights are off" not sure if that's true though.Which streets? They were certainly all on last Saturday and the Xmas lights were on as well.
?{}?
I noticed them off last night on my way to my mates, they're off tonight too. Its all the street lights Dave :oScary! Must be a fault, I'd have thought? Has anyone contacted CCBC or Joan Vaughan? Send her an email and get her earning her money:
What's the bump?
Oh it's a night to stay in - our thermometer currently reads -11C - YES MINUS 11C
Just watch those brass bells!! L0L
I saw a fire engine going down Mostyn Street in the direction of Conwy, It had it's siren and lights on and was by Trinity Square (M and S side) then a large wagon came out of the shops from Bog Island and blocked the Fire Engine's way! :rage:
Amazing, did you get a photo of the large wagon that came out of the shops?
Wow Bellringer! I've got about six inches on my garden furniture, you must have nearly a foot! Those chairs look really inviting with those thick "cushions" on them.
Wow Bellringer! I've got about six inches on my garden furniture
Rather nippy again tonight. Our thermometer is currently reading -9C
The Boxing Day Dip in Deganwy has also be cancelled, on the advice from the RNLI, due to the extremely low water temperatures.
Never let the facts get in the way of weather related hysteria, Ian!
Doesn't appear to be too many about tonight, currently -9C so people have stayed at home in the warm I suppose.
Pity about the fireworks, carols etc having to be cancelled earlier, it's become such a traditional event to attend on Christmas Eve to while away an hour or so. VV
Felt sorry for parents with youngsters at Ysgol Porth y Felin today, the school failed to open after the Christmas break because of a boiler problem. It maybe a good idea to check if it's open tomorrow before sending/taking your child.
Looks like you have also moved my posts about Ysgol Porth y Felin which is supposed to be open today after two days being closed because of heating problems.
Went in the Mail Coach yesterday, it's had a rocky ride over the last few weeks, Dawn and Keith are the new landlords and they are very nice people. They intend to stay so thats good. I hope they make a good go of it. I've always liked the Mail Coach.I went past yesterday - they had wooden tables with those silver metal patio chairs inside the pub. :o
I don't beleve it. I've just recieved an email from a lady called Jo Hale from Enterprise Inns reguarding the Mail Coach. It seems the couple who have only been there a matter of weeks are leaving now! Such a shame it's a nice pub. The problem is these pub-cos insist on lease terms. Its £19,000 + £23,000 for yearly rent. I read earlier on the net that Enterprise are putting over 20 pubs in Wales up for auction, the way the Mail Coach is going it could well be included. Also the Cross Keys in Llandudno. The lads from the town house are just filling in there apparently. The only way to make any money from pubs nowadays is to buy freehold. Please take my advise, do not enter into a lease with any pub co owned pub. You will lose your money I promise, complete and utter waste of time. If you want a pub, buy it freehold, those that have are the only premises benefitting at the moment. You have tremendous buying power and can get some fantastic deals. It must have been those silver patio chairs that did it! :o
We were hoping to go to the Bistro Bach soon so it was disappointing to see that it had closed. It was always full when we went there and the meals were delicious so I hope that it does open again soon. If anyone hears about it reopening can they post it up here please.
"Re-built in 1921, this is by far the best surviving example of an interwar pub in Wales."The wood is mainly mahogany and oak. It has to be saved. Can you see now why I'm Avid Fan lol.
I love all the wood, a very impressive interior.
Went over Conwy bridge last night, No lights again, for me to know they have`nt been on since before the 25th Jan. Does Anybody know why?
I took some photos on the fly over today. Where did these steps go Dave? This photo I found might explain things a little more. It also shows the mysterious doorway that leads under the road.
D'you think those steps have anything to do with the ferry that used to cross the river before the flyover was built. I went past the door today and it was open, why didn't I take a photo?Possibly maintaining some ancient right of access to the river? Could be?!
Yesterday I noticed these turrets. They look as old as the castle ones d'you think they are? The building behind them is the youth hostel so they are a fair way out of Conwy. No, they're only Victorian, part of Bryn Corach. Its design was inspired by Conwy Castle.
Wethers have tried unsucessfully to buy buildings in Conwy in the past. They tried to buy Woolworths and it was also rumoured they were in the running for the police station. Apparently the council refused both offers stating there was already enough pubs in Conwy. It still would make no difference to the Albion it has an attraction of it's own. It would make a big difference to al the others though. I can't see the council approving another pub within the walls to be honest.Bah...how can the Council refuse offers when they don't own the buildings? Wetherspoons have the financial muscle to push through any deal they want and the planning experts to ensure they receive permission. ZXZ
Wetherspoons have the financial muscle to do whatever they want. Their planning consultants can push through anything they want.
As I started the daily trek with Socs today, I approached the "turret toilets" and there was some lads cutting all the ivy from the walls and another fixing the broken drainpipe. The door was open and I couldn't resist sneaking up the stairs and taking some photos. It bought back memories as I climbed the stairs. It was bigger than I remember and it looks like the council have been using it for storage, they are in a state of disrepair but that's to be expected I suppose, they've been shut for years. I was tempted to climb the ladder through the sky light but that's where the lads were so I didn't chance it.Excellent work in getting the inside pics!
I was talking to a man from the council, he informed me that the turret actually belongs to them. He said that the turret was never part of the castle and was built later? He pointed out the difference in the stone work at the side. Dave maybe you can check that out, it seems plausible but why would they build such impressive toilets there? Anyway all the work has been done now and that can only be a good thing. Hopefully it's another brownie point to the forum. Job done.
Great photo. Wasn't there also a famous Goose that lived down on the Quay at one time?Thinking about it Dave is Kelly the duck a goose d'you reckon?
We were talking about the turret toilets earlier. In this photo you can clearly see the turret isn't there. I wonder why they built it then?It was built as a Tollhouse:
A photo of Conwy Quay under constuction in the early 1900s I think.I think it could be much later, and is the new bridge under construction in the 1950s?
This is a painting of Conwy Castle on fire. I was reading last night that people put lights round the Castle to stop people looting materials from it. The problem with this picture is I can't imagine they put fairy lights all over it though. Last night I was shown photos of the chain bridge illuminated with lights and lights on the turrets of the castle. Artistic license maybe?I've never heard of a fire at the castle? I thought the interior timbers etc were stripped out hundreds of years before the railway arrived? I've got the guidebook to the castle I will take a look.

The problem with this picture is I can't imagine they put fairy lights all over it though. Last night I was shown photos of the chain bridge illuminated with lights and lights on the turrets of the castle. Artistic license maybe?I've just been looking through the CADW history of the castle and there's no mention of a fire? The entire interior was stripped out in 1665 by Lord Conway and it was his Agent, Williams Millward, that arranged for the castle to be illuminated in order to prevent the locals pinching the lead that was being stripped off the roofs!
Now here's an interesting thought, the castle did catch fire years ago and apparently it was likened to an inferno. My question is why did the castle not fall down due to the heat? It was said that the mortar withstood the heat thus saving the castle walls from destruction. What was the mortar made from? They took samples from the walls some years ago and the findings were inconclusive, although it was found it to contain mussel shells etc. The mortar used in the Great Wall of China was found to contain rice water. I reckon they should take a sample from the hole in Deganwy Castle I mentioned earlier and find out once and for all.

Justin is missing. He had an argument with Les Battersby on the night. No one is saying Les is behind the disappearance, they're saying no one has seen Les either. Les has probably sculked off home? I hope the lad turns up safe and well. There are a lot of family and friends who are concerned. My nephew saw Les Battersby in a Conwy pub today
Yeah Les was in the pub the other day too. Someone apparently suggested he may have had something to do with the disappearance and les lost the plot (again).
Having walked round St Benedict's today, I decided to go and have a look round the St Agnes cemetery and see if I could find any other graves belonging to old landlords in Conwy (mainly because I was bored) as I walked round, I noticed a little gateway which led to an older part of the cemetery. I walked through the gate and was dismayed to find the state of the place. There really is no excuse for this. Most of the graves are completely covered in Ivy and brambles. There was full grown trees growing out of some graves. Disgraceful. Some of the headstones are falling down. This place has just been left for years and years with no maintenance whatsoever! I understand that relatives of these people have long gone but it's a grave yard for gods sake.
Mother nature is the only one trying to make this cemetery look nice as to be honest as I have never seen so many snowdrops and daffodils.
Another job for the "community service" team maybe.

There's free admission to Conwy Castle on Tuesday, 1st March (St Davids Day) courtesy of the Welsh Assembly Goverment. All other CADW sites will also be free admission on that day.

Went there (and paid admission) a couple of year ago...it was rubbish.
So was the episode of Most Haunted which was broadcast from there.

Dave and I went to the Aberconwy house across from the civic center last week. That's worth a look too. I'm sure the fella said it was supposed to cost £6.80 each which is a bit steep, I think.I think that was for both of us - £6.80 for looking at a couple of rooms would be very steep. Interesting place, though. :)

Must have looked very impressive back then when it was painted white with limewash - amazing to think you can still see traces of the paint on the outer walls today.
Nah I don't think so Andy, the older locals have told me it was on the wall for as long as they could remember. I saw a copy of it once in the Old Bistro Bach over the road.
I love this little extract from the "History of the Caernarfonshire Constabulary" by J Owain Jones
........On one occasion in the 1920s the tramps in Conwy Workhouse went on strike. They refused to do the tasks allotted to them in return for their board. The police were called in and the tramps, nineteen of them, were sentenced to a months imprisonment, and taken to Walton Gaol, Liverpol in a bus specially hired for the purpose. The town square of Conwy, where the police station is situated, was crammed with people who came to see them off.
You can imagine it can't you *&(

Thank you everone who has responded to my query, it would seem, from some of the answers that your ideas are as wild as mine as to the possibilities. The lack of a name is a great disadvantage, but I never did see any identification on it. A suggestion from the enquiring source thought they had heard the name "Llys Selig" at one time but without confirmation, my feeling is that if that is so, it is more likely to be a mispronunciation of "Llys Helig".
Many thanks anyway for your input, if I find the truth I will report back.
:o :o I've never seen a Parrot WITH teeth, Nem?
Then another couple took over, I don't know if they bought it or what. But a load of money was spent on the building and gardens, work went on for months on end, and this couple tried everything possible to build up trade. Loyality cards, transport home, special nights, promotions, cut price residential deals, they did the lot. But of course, it wasent enough, trade went up but not enough to pay for all the improvements and promotions. Shame because they were professionals. So then it was down to closed, or erratic hours, or God knows what the food is going to be like tonight. The drinkers were all long gone.I remember it well at that point. A lot of money was spent on improvements/refurbishment but I can't say that the drinking/eating experience improved much.

disgusting, another reason to be cremated
I came accross this old photo of J Tudor Williams Tanners shop on Lancaster Square Conwy. I couldn't think where the photo was taken at first. I had a scout round and I think it was Georges shop? The front has been changed but I'm 99% sure its the same building. I've not seen this photo befor.I think it may be the other corner, where the HSBC building is now? Reason I say that is, in your old pic, there is no sign of the slope upwards at the left-hand side of the shop which would be there if it were where George's shop is now.
I didn't realise until yesterday that Conwy used to have an island called Yr Ynys.
Situated between Conwy and Junction. The chains of Telfords bridge are attached to the solid rock on the eastern side. In pic 1 you can see the woman painting a picture of Conwy from the island and there is quite clearly a sweeping pathway to the water. I wonder if the steps photographed for an eatlier post have something to do with Yr Ynys. On the google pic you can see the remains of the island on the left hand side of the flyover. It could explain why the steps are completely different from the materials used for the Cob?
Not sure about the date on this postcard.I would say late 1940s/early 1950s?

How did you get inside? ???I imagine she poked the camera through the broken window? It's amazing how quickly buildings deteriorate once the are left empty and unheated.
I was told by a few different people that the Albion was actually sold for £70k, I have also been told it was bought by a builderI will have a look this week to find out if a deal has gone through and, if so, who the new owner is.
A deal has gone through,as the Albion was taken off the market as sold according to the Auction site Pughs. That's all I know as fact Dave. PM me with any results and I'll be your friendI was told by a few different people that the Albion was actually sold for £70k, I have also been told it was bought by a builderI will have a look this week to find out if a deal has gone through and, if so, who the new owner is.
Not Conwy itself but in the Conwy Valley at Tal-y-Cafn, I notice a Christie's sale board on the Tal-y-Cafn Hotel/pub.Just seen the Listing for this, up for sale at £350,000. Not a bad price for what you get..
I'm sure it wasn't there when I went past last week but apologies if it has already been posted elsewhere!
I haven't seen a "proper" scarecrow (one dressed in men's clothing) for a number of years, but saw three in the same field on the outskirts of the town tonight
"Worsel Gummidge" is alive and well!
You'd think in this day and age they would be operated by light sensors instead of timers. It would stop them coming on in the daytime and there would be no need to change them for winter/summer daylight times. That's how ours work on the railway & they have an override switch for maintenance purposes. You're quite right, these are knackered old ones from the 1960s/70s that need scrapping.
I wonder if this the same Huw Pritchard who used to work in Llandudno Library and of TV fame ?
The Mail Coach is closed for a couple of days for another refurb. I do hope they do a good job, the pub looks derelict from the outside and those god awful metal chairs inside are horrendous, no reflection on the current landlords as they are really nice people.
Lager costs a Freehouse around 90p a pint to buy (exc vat), according to this interesting article on the costs of setting up a pub by Matt Saunders, co-owner of the Fat Cat chain:Lager is around 90p a pint wholesale but that's not the price your Pub-Co will charge. Then other costs have to be factored in like business rates, rent, staff, running costs blah blah blah.

I can't believe you all thought I would actually rig the car _))* there's nothing you can do really, as we've said it's just kids on their way home.
There's an application in the NWWN to change a name from Albion to Llewelyn's.
According to letter we received from the council yesterday the contractor is Huw Howatson Ltd and it says "this work is being carried out at no cost to the council"That's good to hear. $good$
Yes. It used to be all white but a few years ago it had a 'makeover'!!
That cabin was on a boat on Saturday afternoon as I walked past I was thinking what a terrible paint job so I don't know where the boat has gone! There was a man on it.
We carried on along Marine walk, it's such a shame to see these boats the Edward Birbeck and the Grey Lady rotting on the Shaw. It doesn't look like the guy we spoke to Dave has done much with the Grey Lady so far, I reckon he was telling fibs, he hadn't bought it at all and was trespassing ???Perhaps he couldn't get it 'standing up'?

BBC News - Conwy in medieval town wall tourist coaches size worry http://bbc.in/pAsoqg (http://bbc.in/pAsoqg)Surely only the Bangor Road archway (which isn't original, it was built by Thomas Telford) needs widening? Then Coaches could enter over the Cob, drop off at Vicarage Gardens and then head out to a Coach Park maybe at Bodlondeb. They'd have to go round back through the tunnel to enter Conwy again certainly, but it would be the cheapest option.
Oh dear. Knocking copy in today's Daily Mail. Under a heading something like boring British days out - smallest house why pay £2.50. to see what is a tiny house?

Re: Parking on Conwy Quay - not sure if I've read it correctly but is the date on the plan 2007?Probably, the regulations were originally drawn up back then but are only going to be enforced now.
Went to see the 'blinc' lightshow in Conwy last night, it was fantastically attended and well worth seeing. All positive in my view, tho I'm sure like the forthcoming rally in Llandudno there will be the usual negativity from the nimbys.
The Albion has a new facebook page Albion Ale House.
Well according to the Conwy bongo drums The Blue Bell is to shut down on the 3rd December. It was never the same once Ken sadly passed away. I really hope no one else is going to invest money with punch taverns.

Good to see work progressing. Love that clock. $good$Yes it's the original clock but unfortunately the mechanism has been changed and it now works with a battery.
I see the planning rejection department at CCBC is in full swing again..Have you examined the plans? The new entrance for the Visitor Centre was completely inappropriate for a World Heritage site. If it had been built, people would have been complaining as to why the Council had ever passed the design...!
At least there are no large scale jobs hinging on it this time.. see here. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-16174247 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-16174247)
Let's have a 3 towns forum meet-up in the revamped Albion ZXZ
In a tourist town like Conwy, it is a disgrace this building has been allowed to stand in this state for so long. Another disgrace is Billingtons garage, what visitors must think of these to eyesores I do not know. Why has the council pussyfooted around for so long? Billington's owners have run rings around them, last I was aware of was that their appeal due to be heard late last year had been postponed until early this year, I think to the end of this month. What's the betting it will be put back once again. These building can do nothing but harm to Conwy and it's tourist industry, Conwy Council, pull your fingers out and get these buildings sorted. Billington's site needs clearing and grassing over and the old Fruit and Fibre, at the very least remove the scaffolding having first rendered the front elevation, with all work on both sites being charged to the respective owners. I am sure that if the council were serious about their commitment to the town they would find a way to get these eyesores sorted out.I understand (from 2 sources) that the appeal by the current owners of Billingtons, Muller Property Holdings, have dropped the appeal at the 11th hour. The appeal was due to be heard today and tomorrow at Mold Crown Court.
Came out of work tonight and there's a horrible smell in Conwy. I wonder if there's something wrong with the drains, honestly it stinks?Having lived out in the sticks for many years, and often close to farms, the smell last night is identical to that produced when a farmer is doing a spot of slurry spreading.

We get a smell like that every so often in Penrhyn Bay too! horrible :'(
Signs have gone up this morning at the Gyffin village end of Henryd Road saying "Road Closed" and diverting traffic along the B5106 Llanrwst Road.
Anyone know why.
Overnight, a wooden stable just off this road was burnt down. Fortunately no horses inside.
Work has being going on in 2 Lancaster Square all last week. Does anyone know what kind of shop is going in there? The one next to HSBC? Cafe, I believe.
Two men with a digger clearing and tidying up the frontage of Billingtons' garage this afternoon. Is demolition finally closer?
Should she now be added to the eyesores section? After walking along Conwy Quay today, I think a 'Maritime Eyesores' section may be needed! ???
it is easy to spot which are the local buses & coaches.
They weren't very forward looking, these medieval castle builders were they?
Could they not foresee that in 800 years time there might be public transport vehicles where would be much wider than a horse and cart? &shake&

Of course they were! Look how they anticipated the coming of the railways by building that archway.

(I was only joking about the railway arch Dave. ???)I'm sure you were; I was talking about the one on the Gyffin road.
I'm guessing there must have been a house on the quay called Conwy then?
So it would be:-
Conwy,
Conwy Quay,
Conwy,
Conwy.
Sorry Yorkie and SDQ. Both wrong. i may have described the question wrong in the first place. But I dont think so.
So here is again. Yorkie is correct. QUAY is one of the words. The other is CONWY ------ BUT that is used FOUR times
Well ---- that has well and truly put my riddle making in the can. Apologies to anyone who might have spent time thinking about it. But I have yet to see any letter addressed Conwy COUNTY. The Quay is universally known as Conwy Quay. I could'nt spell Frigate. And in any case I didnt ask for the correct address. I just asked where my Quay and 4 Conwys was situated.
Never mind, it may have some of you a bit of a laugh. Mike

The question was fine as far as I'm concerned, I think Yorkie is being pedantic because you didn't accept his answer. I find it funny that he accepts Conwy Quay when he used it as an answer but then insists it is The Quay (not Conwy Quay) when it was deemed incorrect.
There's no such thing as "Conwy County" - it's a County Borough and the term is not used by Royal Mail as an address.
I've always found Steve very pleasant to talk to.So have I, Gezzy knows him better than me and he says he's ok too.

You're missing the point. As I said, the weather is often different in town. Just because you've had more bad days on a year on year comparison, it doesn't follow that the town centre or Conwy has, too.The weather half a mile out to sea is quite often different to that even in town, though? &shake&Errrm, I'm sure it is, but I am comparing like with like.... as I was half a mile out to sea LAST year too! &shake& &shake&
The variation of weather within the town is quite amazing. Many times I have been soaked loading my groceries into the car boot at Asda only to find that not a drop has fallen at home.

c) It takes alot longer to get there.
AND in the evening there are lots of youngsters and others, 'messing' around at the entrance to ASDA which can at times make it a little intimidating if you want to use the cash machines.
The old Billington's Garage is no more. It has now been virtually raised to the ground. But why have they left several very large heaps of bricks/concrete? Last week there was a JCB and large lorry on site, but both have disappeared and we are left with a very untidy site. Does anyone know if/when the site will be fully cleared, could it be that the new owner is miffed with the Council for insisting on the demolition, and this is his way of making his displeasure known??
It now looks a much bigger area than before with the building on it.
I walked down onto the Quay yesterday with Jj to have a look round the Celtic Fayre. There was a sign at the entrance which read "£1 entrance fee, this is to cover the cost of the event we receive no funding.....children free" Is it me? According to a friend of mine who has a stall down there, the organisers charge upwards of £300 per stall for their pitch. Where does the revenue from this go then? Why would the organisers get funding? It is after all just an expensive market if I'm honest. What really annoyed me though was the fact huge building site fencing had been erected the entire length of the market, so that no one could go in without paying the £1. It probably cost more for the fencing than they made on entrance fees plus it made the whole area look unwelcoming anyway. I'm sorry but "children free"....what's that about? Who would pay for themselves and kids to enter a market? Last year it cost me nearly £3 for a few bits of fudge so there was no way I was paying extra. In fact I threw my toys out of the pram and carried on walking past. I just think it's out of order.Agreed, it's just a money making scam. The idea that they should get funding to put on a market! &shake&
I can understand the Foodfest (although that's a bit expensive too) but at least they have events like cooking demonstrations going on in the tents.
I also believe that such "fairs" that appear for very short periods at or around a peak selling time take business away from the local shops that pay their rates and taxes for the other 360 days of the year! I don't think they do much to improve the tourism figures either.
But then I could be wrong! ;)

You are not wrong Yorkie.
In fact I have had people coming in to my shop who have bought a ''similar'' item at the local Fayre, either at the Town Hall or in Conwy, and have no need of me this year.
Thats fair enough.... so I thought I would turn it to my advantage.
So, I too ventured to Conwy, paid my £1, and picked up some very good ideas, complete with full supplier details to add to MY range next season.
Thanks organisers, the best quid I ever spent. $good$
I may be wrong but I believe that particular stall is run by the organiser himself.
Nemesis, I would PM you, but....
So, next time you walking my way, I will fill you in on the subject.
Council red tape is stopping people to removing the rubble. Local farmers were going to take it away for free but they needed an environmental license to take it from the site and another one for the dumping site. Which meant too much time, money and hassle.
The Palace Bingo in the old cinema on the High Street is closing it`s doors for the last time next Thursday. The structure seems to be in a bad way, the number of players has dwidled over the years, it`s a shame.
The Palace has suffered from lack of investment over the years, both in terms of building maintenance and promoting the business. Part of Parker Leisure Holdings from Rhyl. Originally built as the Palace Cinema in 1936 to a Colwyn Foulkes design. Bingo on the wane eh? There seems to be no shortage of people playing it online these days!

The one next to the Albion has a notice in the window saying haircuts £4
Sorry to correct you :~~ my old friend DaveR ~~~ but the Palace switched to bingo long before the 1990s. more like the l970s.I 'm sorry, Mike, but I must correct your correction! You're maybe thinking of when they introduced Bingo first, but Cinema & Bingo ran in tandem for many years. Here is a pic from the 1980s, that says both Cinema & Bingo:
That will teach me not to try to correct DaveR (tail between my legs). but can I claim a partial victory. I first drove a coach from Rhyl to the Castle (Cinema or Bingo) full of bingo ladies == they were all ladies, men never seemed to take to bingo == in 1985 and there were no films then' Actually I used to snatch an hours kip up in the old projection room.Oh yes, I remember you telling me this, Mike.
They are average speed cameras, to deal with speeding inside the tunnel.
They did have "advisory" 50 mph speed limit signs at the entrances to the tunnel but they were removed a couple of years ago since when the average speed through the tunnel has dramatically increased. The SPECS camera system should ensure that the average will reduce to an acceptable level. Of course I stand to be corrected! ;)
They are not operational until the 13th of January when the roadworks start up in the tunnel for a month
The Welsh news this morning said the work in Conwy tunnel starts today so the cameras are probably now in operation.
Yorkie you surprise me. Why should you want to know which bit of road is being monitored? Just drive within the signed speed limits and then you will have no bother (says he, who picked up a speeding ticket in Deganwy only about a month ago) mike

St Agnes Road Graveyard, Conwy - WARNING
My husband and I with dog in tow, visited the oldest section of graveyard. This part is neglected and extensively overgrown therefore I was surprised to find as you go through the old gate a path had been cleared to the right along side the high stone wall. I followed the path to approximately 2/3rds of the way down with my husband and dog following behind. He stopped to read a grave and suddenly noticed the dog was covered in wasps

I'm a bit confused about the food festival in Conwy, I'm assuming it's nothing more than a big food market throughout the town... but from speaking to people they've said I would have to pay in order to access the market. How does that work?
£ 8.00 to get in. :(
when two young local lads danced in front of the stage (harmlessly), the minimum-wage idiotic security guys waded in, and physically threw them out!
A great night was ruined by trigger-happy bullies.
Ian, I think one of the problems for some folk is to quote a quote from within a quote as when multiple quotes are posted. Even that sounds complicated but I'm sure you know what I mean!

Customers also have access to their accounts, to withdraw and pay in cash, at any UK post office and all residents of Conwy will continue to have access to other banking facilities and several “fee free” ATMs within the immediate area.
The axing of Conwy’s HSBC follows the closure of the town’s Barclays ATM in High Street.
The is a Link ATM in the Village Shop in Gyffin but I think there is a fee, as there seems to be on most Link ATMs.
A lot of retail places offer cash back too but I understand there is a maximum of £50.

Hello Yorkie, alli will say is whether you are right or wrong, if you have never, ever used an ATM, you must be about zero minus God knows what of the general Bank account public.
I'm not saying you are wrong. But you are certainly an absolutely minority of one. Mike
Your credit card is far more likely to be cloned in general usage in shops etc than at an ATM:

I've gone in my bank branch about twice in the last 10 years, so maybe they have a point?
Perhaps the large Nat West branch, (beneath Gamlins), could install a cash machine?
the one place that does spring to mind is the Visitor Centre. It's close to the castle, it looks like a big enough building and as a commercial enterprise it could only benefit from having a tourist magnet installed.
Contactless payments for small transactions, whether using a Debit Card or your mobile phone, will be the next stage in phasing out cash. Lots of outlets already have the Terminals fitted, i.e. Caffe Nero.QuoteI've gone in my bank branch about twice in the last 10 years, so maybe they have a point?
Like it or not things are changing - certainly in commerce - and it's little wonder that First Direct, a bank with no branches anywhere, is consistently rated more highly than any other by its customers. Fewer and fewer use branches, and branches cost a lot of money to keep going. The main function branches now serve is for the physical receipt of cash, so that's unlikely to change so long as someone, somewhere uses cash. But tiny businesses still use cash, and forcing the installation of NFC card readers that use 3G to check is almost certainly coming.
But the cashless society isn't yet upon us, despite HMRC's urging, so the banks need to consider alternatives to closing down the ATMs everywhere.

The contactless option frightens many customers, has no PIN number to aid security, and has only ever been used once in my shop.Contactless transactions will occasionally ask for a PIN number, as a security measure. They also have a limit of £20.

The needs of the business have sometimes been forgotten here. Very small businesses, which rely on cash transactions, still need to bank cash, get change (and perhaps get business advice) which they would get from a local bank. Unless the Post Office gets its act together, these services (the first two anyway) will be lost to HSBC business customers in Conwy when the branch closes.
It's not all about tourists!
HSBC has now closed along with the cash point. The only cash point in Conwy at the moment is in Spar but the manager there is having a nightmare due to the fact they fill the machine themselves......he put £700 in on Monday morning and by 12.30 it was empty again!! He only lets you have £20 cash back and you can't blame him really. A cash p[oint is being installed on the Square where the telephone boxes are sited but that won't be in place till March.

Where exactly is it in Wetherspoons?
At the height of the Credit Crunch and banking crisis in 2008/9 I popped my card into the ATM, and it said 'insufficient funds'
I immediately wondered whether they meant them or me!
I am informed it may have been removed and there is now only one left in the Golden Goose, Fester, but thanks for updating the list.

Fee-paying machines are at the Golden Goose, 147 Club, Venue Cymru and another outside the Asian Mini-Market in C-y-D making another 4.
Unless anybody knows of any more. ;)

For completeness, the updated list is Barclays, Sainsburys Local, Halifax, NatWest, HSBC, M&S, RBS, Santander, Lloyds, Nationwide and Asda (2) plus the two new phonebox ATM’s outside Vollams and Caffe Nero making 14.
Fee-paying machines are at the Golden Goose, 147 Club, Venue Cymru and another outside the Asian Mini-Market in C-y-D making another 4.
Unless anybody knows of any more. ;)
There'll be a cash machine on the square in a couple of weeks, and I'm trying to get one for members only in the club too.
What is most worrying is I've heard a rumour that Wethers are now eyeing up the Conwy Civic Hall. I still feel the farce over Dylan's on the Quay was just to divert the attention from the inevitable fact that Wethers will move in, so that will be Costa Coffee and Wethers (if true) siphoning cash from the local community and how many independents will these businesses oust out.
I personally find Wetherspoons very depressing places, particularly the Llandudno one which is just a cavernous space. Some are a lot better, the recently opened one in the former Castle Hotel in Ruthin, for example, which is lots of smaller rooms and has a far better feel to it.
for the green members of the forum don't get to upset by the burning as they are in fact carbon neutral.
How is that worked out?
A shame, I liked it! I was told last year that it was owned by the people in the big new house behind and they didn't like the look of it! I preferred the older house!

Did you fish it out B2R? Seeing as the darts subs has gone up AGAIN this week, to £2.00!
Looks like I spoke too soon. The fountain is not working again and the bowl is full of stagnant water. &shake&
Yes the lucky stone is still on the quay it is embedded in concrete at the top of the steps by the telescope.
It was originally the last stone on the old quay wall outside the Liverpool arms.
If that had been a local youth brandishing the knives ,what do we think the sentence had been ,what made me chuckle they confiscated the knives ,she uses knives in the cafe >>>

These are the first images of a proposed £1m restaurant in the shadow of Conwy castle that would create 40 jobs in the town.

On the site of the old Billington's Garage is it??
It would have been nice not to have had our conwy card rejected on saturday morning. A 20% discount would have been welcome.Hi Bri,...This is a post From Jack on the Assets thread...look at the link.... &shake&
Thank you, SteveH, but I went on Saturday.
Even if I went on Sunday, the 20% discount with a Conwy Card only applies to tickets pre-purchased from the Tourist Information Office in either Llandudno or Conwy and even then I would not have been allowed to use a credit or debit card to secure this valuable discount.
I guess one day I will eventually get to use this Conwy Card for the first time.
BTW, where is the Tourist Information Office in Conwy?
Where Elwyn's taxis are and what used to be the registrars office.

CONWY: The application for the restaurant is the first item discussed. Gwynedd Archeological planning service recommend a watching brief condition on approval. Cllr Goronwy Edwards said tThe designs are sympathetic to the application. "To see the site in its derelict state is a shame," he said. Cllr Goronwy Edwards proposed recommendation, with pedestrian barriers and building material conditions, and the proposal is passed.

Mrs FA paid a visit to the docs in Conwy today and has reported back that there's now a branch of Costa Coffee next to the NatWest bank. It's not quite ready to open but not far off.Thats fast work, there was no sign of work starting last week when I passed, I had a peep through the window.
Parisellas are unfortunately well used to vandalism. They operate the cafe in the Happy Valley. Enough said.
The new cafe replacing Cafe Culture in Conwy has opened as 2 The Square. It looks very promising, bright clean decor with a reasonably priced menu and an interesting Gruffalo menu for children. Wishing them ££$ for the future.
He’s supporting a campaign called Parents Against Dog Fouling to banish the scourge.
It sounds to me as though the Pioneer have been casting about for a newsworthy item. Given all the chapels that have been converted to private homes it's not unreasonable to expect one to be used as a part-time cinema. And it's only bringing the wheel full circle; the i61 Church (http://i61.church/) actually meets in a working cinema.
A friend of mine visiting from Canada wanted to use her Visa Card
When I spend my winter in a small, dirty fishing village in an Indian state, with constant power breakdowns and definitely no water that you can drink,
A friend of mine visiting from Canada wanted to use her Visa Card the two available cash machines wouldnt take foreign cards, so off we went to the NATWEST they said they were not linked to the ATM so she would have to go to Llandudno or Colwyn Bay. I didnt believe this so rang NATWEST they said it was true so all our visitors from abroad cant get cash in Conwy, what the hell is wrong with this place.
This prompted me to reflect on all the banks which have closed in the area in the last 40 years. Here's a few - I am sure others will add some:
Not being critical, just curious, where else can they build with the current shortage of housing, particularly with the immigration problems we face ?? &shake&We have to remember that we are a planet with finite resources, our population needs to stop growing or it will eventually mean the end for all of us.
On a more local level, there are at least 25,000 empty homes in Wales already. Let's get every one of them back in use before considering building even one new house on a greenfield site.
Yes, I definitely think so. Perhaps the Council Tax Rate for Second Homes should be 150% of the normal amount, with the excess being ploughed back into subsidising starter homes for local people?QuoteOn a more local level, there are at least 25,000 empty homes in Wales already. And across the country there are hundreds of thousands of empty homes. Perhaps second home owners should be charged a second homes tax?
May be the exception to the rule but there was a brilliant busker in Conwy near Plas Mawr this afternoon.

Is this true? Does the bookies not count as a shop then?
The survey - which was picked up by several nationals - was not the work of the Daily Post; the Post merely translated the findings of the Local Data Company into an easy-read article. Their methodology is stated on the final page and I suspect it would be unreasonable to expect the DP - given its deadlines - to double check every survey prior to printing. But here's what the Local data company say about how they garnered the information:

Don't think it's been mentioned on here but the Mulberry has been closed for renovations works since before Christmas, probably making it even more boring and overpriced than it already is Z**We went past the other day whilst on a walk and they have really ripped it apart, it's almost unrecognisable.
Public meeting to be held over future of Conwy Civic HallTranslation from 'ConwySpeak' into English..."We've already decided what will happen with this building but are pretending that we care about what local people think so have having this sham consultation".

Shocking to see how the NHS and Education are both in crisis in Wales....
I imagine the increase in population across the UK is one of the other biggest causes of strain on NHS services, unless anyone thinks that all these extra people will never need medical treatment?QuoteShocking to see how the NHS and Education are both in crisis in Wales....
Yes - we're so like the rest of the UK, aren't we? The NHS is in a pretty dire state throughout the UK. There are a multitude of reasons, not least being the fact that the NHS has done a great job in enabling folk to live a lot longer. Sadly, that's not always in the best of health, and the only thing certain in life is death.
Education is a very interesting issue, since it's better in Wales in some ways and worse in others. No way is it anywhere near crisis, however, but it's a little sad that Osborne's relentless squeezing of cash for the devolved economies has created specialist shortages...
Is there any evidence that using birds of prey has any lasting effect? For instance, in deterring gulls from nesting in a given area (in which case, the best time to have hawks around would presumably be around the end of March?). I remember they were used at Rhyl for a period (hired by the council I think) and possibly at Llandudno? But has it been found successful or not?

I used to supply a contractor with a product called fluid x, which basically was a smelly jays fluid,he was paid to remove seagull nests from the hotels and bird proof them .the fluid was supposed to be a disinfectant but he found it deterred the birds for the season i have tried it in Conway with great success just put in weed sprayer and spray around used area
I suspect as the accident involved a person and a horse it's against the law to leave without reporting it.
Councillor Goronwy Edwards has said today that there were health and safety issues over the number of horses, cyclists, walkers and riders on Sychnant Pass Road. He also said" It's something the authorities needs to look at" But I won't hold my breath as they are so hell bent on cutting costs, it will take a human death for them to do anything. :( In the not to distant future when they start the major roadworks on the A55 everyone will use the Sychnant Pass Road to avoid the queues.Public meeting called over Conwy road after horse dies in collision.
That was a great atmospheric photo Dave, I bet your wife was pleased with it.
I was in Conwy today by the bowling green and noticed that the Ivy on the entrance to Benarth Hall was turning into a lovely shade of red.
Had a great night tonight at Conwy Feast, and apart from enjoying the very excellent Pinc Ffloyd live on stage, it was lovely to see Mr and Mrs Bri Roberts, had a nice couple of drinks with Mr and Mrs BlongB, and even had a drunken chat with Born to Run, (he was drunker than me)
Nice to see you all at an impromptu TTF get together,
As far as Pinc Ffloyd go, never seen them before, but I would pay good money to see their full set again in future.
The banners for Visit Conwy were in full view on International TV at lunch time today during live coverage of the Wales Rally GB at Llyn Brenig. Cllr Brian Cossey was presented to all those on the podium.
How much did the council pay I wonder?
Shock and anger over Natwest plan to shut NINE banks. Conwy being one of the nine.Even though we all like the idea of having a local bank branch available, it's hard to argue with the facts, unfortunately. Very few people need to go into a bank branch anymore. I haven't been inside my bank in over 2 years, I suspect.
Ieuan Edwards, owner of Edwards of Conwy, said no one would have predicted 10 years ago that a town as busy as Conwy would have no banks within a decade.

As a business i use mine every week. It will mean businesses in Conwy will have to come into LLandudno or junction to do any banking.
Yet another terrace house in Conwy town has been bought by investers being ripped apart to turn into a holiday cottage. We have enough large vehicles prowling the back streets looking for on street parking. Thinking of making a big banner saying welcome to Butlins. Your chalet is ready !
Whilst we were looking round Plas Mawr, I looked out of the window and wondered myself what is happening with the former Palace Cinema & Bingo Club? It closed down several years ago and nothing seems to have happened since. I noticed that both shops at the front of the building are still let (an ice cream shop has recently opened in the left-hand one), as is Amelie's Restaurant in the old theatre bar above. Shame to see such a grand building falling slowly into decay.

Has anyone heard what is opening in the old Fruit & Fibre shop opposite the main bus stop in Lancaster Square? There appears to be a chiller fridge, hope it's not going to be another takeaway.Parisellas is my understanding, Meleri.
Thanks for that Bri, I can't see the point in having two of the same ice cream shops in such a small town though, but they must know what they are doing. Perhaps they will make the present one into just a cafe.
It was reported a couple of weeks ago that he was opening opposite Edwards of Conwy in the High Street. That's right, Stan. I believe the Chapel may be used for storage/restoration, whilst the High St shops are there display the items for sale.
You posted it Dave R on 16 Sept.

Drew Pritchard's shop opened today, he sold me a nice illuminated clock for £75, nice shop, items of all prices in there, worth a look!We visited on Monday, his shop is a nice addition to the High Street.
I noticed a sign up in the window of the old David Owen Butcher shop in Bangor Road today, Issac Simeon Artisan Patisserie will be opening soon. Never heard of him so I Googled it and he has another place in Colwyn Bay, has anyone been to that shop ? The reviews are good and the cakes & bread look delicious on the photographs, bang goes my waistline if they taste as good ;DPassed it many times, always thought it a little odd that an Artisan Patisserie would exist in Colwyn Bay!
Now, what is reason behind Conwy Pirates Weekend moving to Rhos on Sea?This article from the Pioneer 11/ 4 .....
Excuse me, what sort of person do you think I am ?
Personally I don't think the quay would benefit from a cheap chain pub backing onto it with a terrace area, especially not populated by the kind of crowds Weatherspoons draws in. Look at all the fights that happen in the Liverpool arms (not all involving Drew Pritchard), and then multiply that kind of trouble by tenfold, with the introduction of cheap booze. The quay is a lovely place, made far less lovely by all the drinkers clouding the air with smoke from the Liverpool Arms. I really don't see how turning the quay into chav alley is going to attract people into the area, and if people really want to visit a Weatherspoons, they really don't need to travels many miles to do so, either from their own doorstep, or from their visit to Conwy.
The building design is an improvement, but that's as far as it goes.
This is what Wetherspoon had planned for Conwy Civic HallLooks grim, Conwy has enough pubs already. Why not let the community run it as an arts venue?
Pub chain reveals images of what it wanted to do at the historic site.

I thought they were proposing a Wetherspoons not a Hell's angels bar! Also If fights in the Liverpool arms are multiplied tenfold I reckon that would make it get to roughly about.... 0 fights a year. 0 x 10 = 0.
A funny post though, I assume it was meant to be satirical? ;D
I'm extrapolating from that fact that there are probably many more which don't get reported in the local newspapers,Quote
Does that translate to "speculating"?
Had a bit of a shock today while browsing Fletcher & Poole property for sale. 7 Lancaster Square is up for sale comprising, ground floor commercial property with two self contained apartments. No mention of the Post Office that is there at present. Has anyone heard if it is to be moved elsewhere, or are we losing it altogether? :'(It's referred to as an Investment Property but the particulars do not give any details of a lease or rent being paid by the Post Office, oddly enough.
It's a couple of years since I posted my original query below and still nothing seems to be happening with the old Palace Cinema in Conwy? Rumours of Wetherspoons have come and gone. I believe the building is still owned by Parker's Leisure Holdings of Rhyl?Still no news regarding the fate of the former Palace Cinema? Such a large building in the centre of Conwy could surely be put to constructive use? I'm concerned that lack of maintenance to the auditorium will eventually result in the inevitable attempt to demolish.Whilst we were looking round Plas Mawr, I looked out of the window and wondered myself what is happening with the former Palace Cinema & Bingo Club? Beech Developments Limited have successfully appealed that decision after claiming the homes opposite Parc Sychnant are needed and satisfy Conwy’s requirement for a five-year housing supply.

As I feared Conwy Post Office is to close on the 25th March >:( This is a big blow to Conwy as we have no banks either & a lot of people, myself included used the PO banking facilities.Shame they can’t open a PO counter in the Spar?
Edith, I thought it was disappointing that a more suitable occupant could not be found, especially as I thought the position of the new Lidl was bad enough.
We have just bought a house in Conwy and I have spent the last few days reading all 93 pages of this thread to learn a bit more about the town. It is an interesting read and shows how the town has really developed into the vibrant place it is today since 2011. We have lived in Llandudno since we moved here in 2017 but always had a soft spot for Conwy so are very glad that the right house came on to the market. Even with Brexit imminent, we couldn't pass it up. $yes$Congratulations to you and the family, nice to hear you are staying in the area, ............. Conwy ! well that takes care of the flooding threat. ;)
Edith, I thought it was disappointing that a more suitable occupant could not be found, especially as I thought the position of the new Lidl was bad enough.
Looking at the artist's impression of the new Lidl it will be a lot more prominent from the road than I realised. It seems strange that the council are so keen on surrounding the world-famous historic town with second-rate retailers, but their decisions have long-since ceased to surprise me. Maybe we can resurrect Kwik Save for a prominent spot on Bangor Road and invite Netto to occupy the tower on Upper Gate Street, tax-free of course. It'd be a shame to miss out any entrances!
Just thought I would have a look at how the application for the new Coop on the old Billingtons Garage site was going, but it appears to have disappeared. The application 0/46933 registered 23/12/2019 isn't now on the CCBC Planning portal, does anyone know if it has been withdrawn?A DP story this morning has some interesting news.............. "The application for the new store has been submitted by the Llandudno Investment Partnership, which is a collaboration between Mostyn Estates and local businessman Peter Ormerod."
Big , big rumours on the mill. Wetherspoons have lost out, Coming to conwy. The Bodfor from Rhyl have undercut them and been successful. Turning the old Library into a large sports Bar. Live bands and DJ’s cheap beers and is due to open its doors in early August 2020. Times are changing in Conwy guys.
How true this is I don't know but if so it's worrying for Conwy
Conwy Co-op plan in shadow of castle - heritage groups give their verdict
The scheme would see an eyesore site close to the historic castle redeveloped.
"The application has triggered responses from heritage groups who have voiced concerns about the impact of the plans on the UNESCO World Heritage Site(WHS).
UNESCO adviser The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) wants more photomontages and evidence about how the building would impact views from the castle and town walls, and also the views of the historic town from the site itself."
Peter Marsden, chairman of the ICOMOS-UK World Heritage committee, said: "While we appreciate that the present situation of the site with its abandoned concrete hardstanding and unmaintained surrounds is unacceptable, and we acknowledge that the height of the proposed building is relatively low, we are not convinced that its proposed design and use of materials is the best solution for the development of so important a position so close to the monumental medieval castle."
Welsh heritage body CADW also wants more information.
They say the Heritage Impact Assessment fails to consider the impact of the development on the "Outstanding Universal Value" of the castle.
The group also wants additional images showing exactly how the new store could impact views of, and views from the castle and walls.

A SUMMER holiday ban on the use of vehicles along Conwy Quay amidst "significant numbers of visitors” has been extended for another month.
Conwy County Borough Council, which had implemented the traffic-free zone at the quay from the end of July to late September, said the measure will now remain in place until after the October half-term holiday.
The measure was originally brought in during the school summer holidays, however the council said it decided to enforce the extension after it received “positive feedback” from residents.
Conwy Quay is one of the busiest areas in the town, as the location of the Smallest House in Great Britain and near the 13th century Conwy Castle.
Parking spaces on Castle Street have also been closed as part of the plan, which aims to free up pedestrian space and make the area safer for visitors. It is also designed to enable shoppers to queue outside nearby premises, the council said.
Motorists continue to be advised to use pay and display parking at Vicarage Gardens and Market Place.
“We had positive feedback from residents and visitors about the traffic free zone at Conwy Quay over the summer,” a council spokesperson said. “So we’ve decided to extend this until the end of October, after the half term holiday.” ref pioneer
There are far to many eateries in Conwy as it is & hope CCBC Planning Officers question whether changing a much needed retail shop into yet another cafe is a good idea. Conwy Town Council have voted against it, but will they be listened to? &shake&Perhaps Conwy Town Council should have studied the application a little closer? The application is to convert a disused outbuilding and courtyard at the rear of the shop into a cafe. The shop itself is to remain a shop.

Low price ... got it for a steal.
If you put 5 different planning officers in a room, you would get 5 different views on an application - unlike most other professional disciplines, planning is not an exact process. Nothing changes.
