Title: Fire service news and announcements
Post by: SteveH on October 18, 2019, 04:19:00 pm
Never been keen on candles in the house but during power cuts I have used candles, in a glass container for safety, so reading this was a bit of a shock, and well worth sharing on the Forum.

Photos show the aftermath of a freak accident which saw a glass jar with a candle in it explode and cause a house fire.
Fire chiefs are warning people not to leave burning candles unattended after two people were "lucky to escape" a blaze which destroyed their bathroom.

The warning has been issued as part of National Candle Fire Safety Week, which takes place this week.

https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/shocking-photos-might-make-you-17106761 (https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/shocking-photos-might-make-you-17106761)

Residents using candles are advised to follow the safety advice below:

Make sure candles are secured in a proper holder, on a stable surface, and away from materials that may catch fire - such as curtains
Children and pets should never be left alone with lit candles
Never leave a lit candle unattended. Put candles out whenever you leave the room, and make sure they’re put out completely at night
Keep the wax pool clear of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times
Burn candles in a well-ventilated room, but avoid vents or air currents - this will help prevent rapid or uneven burning, sooting, and excessive dripping
Trim the wick to ¼ inch each time before burning. Long or crooked wicks can cause uneven burning, dripping or flaring
Don’t move candles once they are lit
Follow the manufacturer's recommendations on burn time and proper use
Always put scented candles in a heat resistant holder, as these candles are designed to liquefy when heated, to maximise fragrance
Always burn candles on a heat resistant mat
Do not burn several candles close together as this might cause the flame to flare
Use a snuffer or a spoon to put out candles. It’s safer than blowing them out which may cause sparks.

Fire officers are highlighting the importance of using white goods appliances safely after three people had a lucky escape.

Crews from Llandudno and Colwyn Bay were called to the property at Hafod Road West, Penrhyn Bay, Llandudno at 2.01pm.
A smoke alarm alerted the residents and they were able to call 999 and escape safely with reassurance advice issued by control operators.

Steve Roberts, Locality Manager for North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “This incident once again highlights the importance of smoke alarms which alerted the occupants to the fire in their home.

“The fire started in a tumble dryer which was housed in a cupboard under the stairs in the property. If you use a tumble dryer, it must have appropriate ventilation - do not place items on top or around the appliance.

“Other important safety tips for using white goods appliances safely include:
* Don’t overload plug sockets - the high wattage for a tumble dryer means that it needs its own 13-amp socket. Keep an eye out for any scorching or burn marks, including checking any visible electrical wires.

*Don't leave appliances unattended – don't turn the tumble dryer on before you leave the house or go to bed. Tumble dryers contain powerful motors with fast moving parts that can get very hot.

*Keep your dryer well ventilated, make sure the vent pipe is kink free and not blocked or crushed in any way.

*Always clean out the filter after using your tumble dryer.

*Always allow each drying programme, including the 'cool down cycle', to complete fully before emptying the machine. If you stop the machine mid cycle, the clothing will still be hot.

*Don’t ignore the warning signs – if you can smell burning or clothes feel hotter at the end of the cycle, stop using your appliance and have it checked out by a professional.
*To help protect you and your family in the event of a fire, ensure you have working smoke alarms fitted in your home and test them regularly.

Post by: SteveH on December 17, 2019, 03:25:18 pm
Whirlpool to recall hundreds of thousands of fire-risk washing machines.

Whirlpool has announced it is to recall hundreds of thousands of fire-risk washing machines just months after it launched a major recall of potentially dangerous dryers.

The firm said as many as 519,000 washing machines sold under the Hotpoint and Indesit brands in the UK between October 2014 and February 2018 could be affected by a flaw with the door-locking system that could lead to them overheating and potentially catching fire.

It has urged owners of appliances bought since 2014 to contact Whirlpool immediately to check if their washing machine is one of the models affected.

In the meantime, it advised consumers to unplug their washing machines and not use them.

Those who chose to continue using their machines should only use cold water cycles of 20C or lower as this significantly reduces the risk, Whirlpool said.

This is because the issue is associated with the washing machine's heating element being activated during washing cycles above 20C.
Consumers can check if their washing machine is affected by visiting https://washingmachinerecall.whirlpool.co.uk (https://washingmachinerecall.whirlpool.co.uk)

Firefighters appeal for people to take care in the kitchen after being called to four cooking fires in 12 hours

NORTH Wales firefighters are urging people to do them a big favour while they are social isolating in their homes - and take care when they cook.

Firefighters attended four cooking fires within 12 hours on Sunday – and a senior fire officer is asking the public to listen to his appeal to take extra care in their homes and help reduce the demand on firefighters in the region.

We also need to convince people that soap and water are far more effective at destroying Covid—19 than alcohol gels. Soap breaks down the lipid coating of the virus and renders it inactive. Alcohol gels should only be used as a stand by.

SOME firefighters in Wales could soon be swapping their fire engines for an ambulance as part of the fight against the coronavirus.

The Welsh Government has revealed training will begin in the near future in a bid to increase the capacity of the ambulance service during the Covid-19 outbreak.

It comes as deputy minister for housing and local government, Hannah Blythyn has written to express her gratitude to fire service staff for their hard work during the current crisis.

As part of the response to coronavirus, fire services in south Wales have already deployed mass decontamination units to hospitals to serve as temporary triage facilities.

Firefighters nationally also played a crucial role in tackling the recent flooding caused by storms Ciara and Dennis.

“Firefighters have a unique and extensive set of skills and capabilities and are rightly held in very high regard by the public.

“Our fire and rescue services have a long and proud tradition of reacting and working swiftly, effectively and above all selflessly in times of crises.
“There has never been a greater need for us to call on that tradition.

“The coronavirus outbreak represents one of the biggest challenges anyone of us have experienced and we know there will be additional pressures put on the service.
“I am confident the fire service will continue to make a real difference in the response to the pandemic in Wales.” refPioneer

Firefighters issue plea after outdoor fires in Gwynedd and Conwy put service under 'extra pressure'                          ref DP
Two out of control blazes in Pwllheli and Llanfair TH tied up valuable front line resources.

Three crews were tied up dealing with the Conwy incident, they extinguished five metres of rubbish that was on fire.

The North Wales Fire & Rescue Service is urging people not to burn waste, while the emergency services efforts are focused on fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

"A small fire can spread so easily...Please don’t put unnecessary extra pressure on North Wales’ services. Let’s work together to fight coronavirus."

Attempts to show show solidarity with NHS workers with sky lanterns is 'misguided', says fire chiefs

PEOPLE are being asked not to buy sky lanterns and set them off in support of the NHS and carers.

A spokesperson from North Wales Police said the lanterns could cause a 'significant' fire.
They added: "A better, safer way to show your support is to simply stay at home."

The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) has warned that the campaign to encourage the public to light the lanterns in support of solidarity for NHS workers is ‘misguided’.

Roy Wilsher, NFCC chairperson, said: “While I fully understand people wanting to show their support to the NHS, I would encourage people to find a different way to do this.

“NFCC does not advocate the use of sky lanterns and we do not believe they should be used under any circumstances.

“All emergency services are currently under unprecedented pressure due to Covid-19, and I am concerned this type of activity could not only put additional pressure on the fire service, but further strain on the NHS.

“If a sky lantern causes a fire, it could see firefighters spending valuable time dealing with what could be a complex and large-scale incident. Time which could be spent supporting vulnerable people in the community, as part of the fire services response to Covid-19.”

Firefighters are urging people to "use common sense" after a huge blaze took hold of a hillside and put homes at risk.

Crews were called to Pwllheli at around 1.30pm on Thursday after flames spread across the hillside.

The fire service said it started out as someone burning a small amount of waste in their garden but turned into an emergency after the fire went "out of control".

The fire took hold of 2,000 square metres of gorse, bracken and wood.

Fire chiefs have renewed calls for people not to burn items at their homes and in their gardens, and said this incident put "additional burden" on emergency services who are already under pressure due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Group manager Jeff Hall said: "Once again we have controlled burning which has gone out of control. This was a small garden waste fire that has spread to a hillside and is threatening properties in the vicinity.

"Thankfully, we've got it under control with three appliances, but once again this is a clear demonstration of what we don't want to see in these times of coronavirus - placing additional resource burdens on our fire and rescue service.

"Please, please, I implore you do not burn at home in these times. We have dry weather and obviously the Covid issue. Please use common sense, and stay safe."     ref DP

NORTH Wales Fire and Rescue were called to deal with two discarded barbecues in the space of six hours on the Great Orme in Llandudno. ref Pioneer

On Tuesday May 27, crews from the town had to deal with two separate incidents at just after 2pm and just after 8pm.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "We were first called at 2.04pm to an unattended barbecue which was 'well alight' on the Great Orme.

"Six hours later, at 8.15pm, we had to return to the area to deal with a carelessly discarded barbecue which took until 9.30pm to fully extinguish."

North Wales Fire and Rescue say they are urging residents not to put 'unnecessary strain' on their services during the coronavirus pandemic.

As such, they are asking residents not to light garden fires and bonfires; in order to protect those who may have respiratory problems.

A spokesperson added: "Smoke from garden waste fires produces carbon monoxide and pollutants that can irritate airways, the skin and eyes. This can cause coughing, wheezing and chest pain, particularly if it is damp and smouldering, affecting people with asthma and other respiratory diseases. These people are also at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

"Burning plastic, rubber or painted materials not only creates an unpleasant smell but also produces a range of poisonous compounds.

"Avoiding lighting fires will also help our emergency services at this time as fires can easily spread and cause damage and injury."

An urgent warning has been issued following a devastating house fire in North Wales.                     ref DP

The alert comes as in response to a fire at a property yesterday evening (Friday, August 4).

The fire is believed to have been caused by a plug-in pest control device installed inside the home.

However, during investigations, emergency services found that the item was not up to current UK safety standards.
North Wales Fire and Rescue explained that the plug-in did not carry the required 'CE' or 'Kite' markings.

These two certifications show that electrical items with health, safety and environmental protection standards.
The CE mark is displayed on authorised items sold within the European Economic Area (EEA).
And the Kite mark is visible on products approved by the British Standards Institution in the UK.

"When purchasing such items, please ensure they have correct safety standard markings."

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is continuing to offer safe and well checks during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, including a free smoke alarm and installation service.

The check takes about 20 minutes and is carried out by fully trained fire and rescue service staff, who supply and install lifesaving, free home smoke detectors or ensure that your existing alarms are in working order; provide advice on how to make your home safe from fire; help you prepare an escape plan to assist you and your family in safely making your way out of the property in the event of fire; provide specialised equipment for deaf and hard of hearing people; and assess whether you are at high risk and may benefit from specialist equipment to help keep you safe.

The fire service has also modified its service and speaks with householders over the telephone to discuss any health or self-isolation arrangements and minimise the amount of time spent on home visits.

In between tackling fires, rescuing motorists and retrieving cats from trees, a firefighting team has found a bit of time to have some festive fun.           (And spare a thought for those on duty over Xmas   $salute$  )

Hmmm.  The bible's pretty specific about working on the Sabbath.

Exodus 35:2
Six days work shall be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on it shall be put to death.

Numbers 15:32-41
While the people of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day. And those who found him gathering sticks brought him to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation. They put him in custody, because it had not been made clear what should be done to him. And the Lord said to Moses, “The man shall be put to death; all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.” And all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him to death with stones, as the Lord commanded Moses.

Exodus 31:14
You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

There are a lot more, but you get the idea.

There's more.  Selling your daughter into slavery is explicitly sanctioned by the bible,

Leviticus 18:22.
Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination

Leviticus 11:6-8
And the hare, because it chews the cud but does not part the hoof, is unclean to you. And the pig, because it parts the hoof and is cloven-footed but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. You shall not eat any of their flesh, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.

So that's an end to all football and rugby played on Sunday.

Deuteronomy 22:11
You shall not wear cloth of wool and linen mixed together.  Another for the death penalty, this time by burning.

While checking the above, I came across this - possibly the original email or letter from which many of the examples originate:

"Dear Dr. Laura,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's law. I have learned a great deal from you, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend homosexuality, for example, I will simply remind him or her that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the other laws in Leviticus and Exodus and how to best follow them.

When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Leviticus 1:9). The problem is my Neighbors. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. How should I deal with this?
I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as stated in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?
I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Leviticus 15:19-24). The problem is, how can I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.
Leviticus 25:44 states that I may buy slaves from the nations that are around us. A friend of mine claims that this applies to the Welsh, but not the Scots. Can you clarify?
I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?
A friend of mine says that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Leviticus 10:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?
Leviticus 20:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's Word is eternal and unchanging. "

Fire chiefs have urged people to be careful where they place glass objects after a mirror almost caused a house blaze.

A resident in Llandudno smelt smoke and spotted a smouldering window frame, which was due to a mirror left on a sill magnifying the sun.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service (NWFRS) chiefs shared a photo sent by the person to serve as a warning.

A statement from the service said: "Did you know mirrors or glass objects like bottles, vases or fish bowls left in direct sunlight can cause a fire?

"Thankfully the smouldering only affected the window frame – had there been material in the area the fire could have escalated very quickly."

This warning also applies to aerosol cans, which can explode if left in the sun.

FIRE stations across Conwy held a minute’s silence to remember firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Firefighters’ Memorial Day takes place on Tuesday, May 4 with a one-minute silence at 12pm. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said all its staff at stations across the region stopped to observe the commemoration.

The silence pays tribute to the ongoing dedication and commitment of firefighters in the UK and in British Overseas Territories, particularly those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

In a social media statement, North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “Today is Firefighters' Memorial Day. Our stations will join firefighters across the UK at midday in a minute's silence to reflect and remember friends, colleagues and all of those who have passed away in the line of duty.”

Mark Hardingham, chair of the National Fire Chiefs Council, said: “It is important we recognise the annual memorial day to pay tribute to those across the world who tragically lost their lives in the line of duty. Their bravery and ultimate sacrifice should be remembered, along with the impact on their families, friends and colleagues.

“Fire services across the country will come together to give thanks and commemorate the bravery of their colleagues and observe today’s minute’s silence.”

May 4 is also International Firefighters’ Day, which is known as St Florian’s Day in some countries, as St Florian is the patron saint of firefighters.

THERE were three fires on Sunday caused by disposable barbecues put in bins.

North Wales Fire and Rescue attended the first incident at about 6.30pm. A disposable BBQ was put in bin on West Shore, Llandudno.

Just before 6pm, they were called to a disposable BBQ put in bin in Los Isallt, Trearddur Bay, and at 5.30pm, one in the bin on the promenade in Colwyn Bay.

A spokesperson from the fire service said: "We've been called to three incidents involving BBQs not being disposed of safely - remember after cooking, make sure your BBQ is cold before moving it. Empty ashes onto bare garden soil - never put them straight into a bin.

"Hot ashes can melt the plastic and cause a fire."

LLANDUDNO Fire Station is to host its first charity car wash in almost two years next weekend.

The event will be held at the station on Sunday, October 17 between 11am and 4pm, with all of the proceeds going to The Fire Fighters Charity, which supports members of the UK fire services community.

“We’re trying to pull out all the stops on this one and get as many people as we can to come down on the day. It’s a national car wash; stations run them all across the country on different days throughout the year.

“The Fire Fighters Charity relies on all of its funding, so events like this are crucial to the running of the charity.”

People who would like their car washed by the firefighters do not need to pay an entry fee, with Josh adding: “Any donation is greatly received.”

There will be the option of donating money of any amount into a bucket, while contactless payments may also be possible.

You can also donate directly to the Fire Fighters Charity by visiting: www.firefighterscharity.org.uk/donate/give-a-one-off-donation (http://www.firefighterscharity.org.uk/donate/give-a-one-off-donation).

LLANDUDNO Fire Station enjoyed a record-breaking charity car wash last weekend, raising more than £1,000 in their first event of this kind in almost two years.

Firefighters at the station typically hold two car washes a year, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, had not previously done so since November 2019.

Never before had they raised as much money as they managed on Sunday, October 17, with all of the proceeds going to The Fire Fighters Charity, which supports members of the UK fire services community.

And they managed almost double the £550 they managed last time despite having to cut short Sunday’s event after the team received a fire call about 45 minutes before the event’s scheduled end time.

By Ruth Bateman, the Arson Reduction Manager at North Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

As we move out of winter and into spring, a lot of my work will focus on trying to prevent and reduce the number of countryside fires we attend.

During drier periods, fires involving grass, bracken and heather can develop very quickly, especially in raised winds, resulting in fires getting out of control and spreading to neighbouring properties or forestry, with the need for the fire and rescue service to be called out to extinguish them.

I’d also urge visitors to the countryside to take extra care when they are out and about and reduce the risk of accidental fires. Make sure that any smoking materials are put out properly and if you are out camping, again make sure that campfires or barbecues are fully extinguished.

I would also like to take the opportunity to reinforce our messages that while accidents can happen, there are others within our communities who are deliberately setting fire to our countryside – not only is this a crime, for which they will be prosecuted, but it also places unnecessary pressure on front line services and puts our communities in harm’s way. I would encourage anyone with information relating to such crimes to call 101, or to report anonymously to CrimeStoppers on 0800 555 111.

A FIRE APPLIANCE from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service set off for Eastern Europe in the early hours of this morning (May 3) to support firefighters working on the frontline in Ukraine.

The fire appliance is being donated to Ukrainian firefighters after a call to support the war effort came from the Home Office and the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC).

The fire appliance is also carrying equipment that will be used to support firefighters, emergency services and volunteers who are battling together on the front line.

Stuart Millington, Assistant Chief Fire Officer, said: “We are pleased to be able to offer this fire appliance to support firefighters in Ukraine.

“Many fire stations and fire appliances have already been destroyed in the war.

“This vehicle was about to be replaced here in North Wales, and we are pleased to be able to support in this way and donate a fully functional fire appliance to the firefighters of Ukraine.”

“Our staff will join a convoy of vehicles from other fire and rescue services from across the UK to support this worthwhile effort that is coordinated by the Fire Aid charity and the NFCC.

“This vehicle was no longer in operational use and we were pleased to be able to deliver it to the firefighters of Ukraine.”

“I am immensely proud of and would like to thank our staff who are working hard behind the scenes to prepare the vehicle and equipment for departure, but also of the crew who will be driving through Europe to Poland to deliver the vehicle.

“I look forwards to hearing regular updates from their journey.”

Their journey will be documented on the social media pages of North Wales Fire and Rescue Service.

Major incident declared in London as UK's hottest day ever sees multiple homes engulfed in flames
There are fires cropping up all around the English capital

The London Fire Brigade [LFB] has declared a major incident due to "a huge surge" in blazes across the capital. Pictures show firefighters tackling a fire where multiple homes have been destroyed by flames after a huge blaze spread to an east London village leading people having to flee their homes among 40C heat. Black smoke was billowing into the air, with buildings and fields on fire in Wennington, east London.

The fire brigade said in a statement it is battling "several significant" incidents, as people have been urged not to have barbecues or bonfires due to the "unprecedented" challenges crews face. Shocking aerial footage shows grass and houses grass areas up in flames in Wennington, near Rinham, Greater London, with roaring orange flames tearing through buildings.

Families counting cost of devastating fires after scorching temperatures
Following major incidents in many locations up and down the country, people are coming to terms with the aftermath of the nightmare blazes

Families are counting the cost of devastating fires amid record temperatures as the country is warned it needs to prepare for more extreme heat in the future.

Major fire incidents were declared in London, Norfolk, Suffolk, Lincolnshire, Leicestershire and South Yorkshire amid the tinder-dry conditions as temperatures climbed above 40C for the first time ever on Tuesday. London Fire Brigade (LFB) had its busiest day since the Second World War as record temperatures led to hundreds of fires across the capital, with the service taking 2,670 calls.

Britain is braced for another heatwave that will last longer than July?s record-breaking hot spell, with highs of up to 35C expected next week, forecasters have said.

Temperatures over the coming days will remain lower than last month?s scorching 40.3C, but the warmth will continue over a ?prolonged period?. People have been urged not to host barbecues in the tinder-dry conditions after 15 homes were evacuated following a garden fire that spread out of control in Essex.

Southern Fire and Rescue Service said around 40 people were forced to flee properties due to a blaze that damaged more than a dozen homes on Saturday. Area manager Neil Fenwick said: ?While summer weather usually provides the perfect opportunity to host a barbecue or gather around a chiminea in the evening, we?re strongly discouraging people from having any kinds of fires at the moment.?

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "A man in his thirties suffered significant burns to his face after using an accelerant to start a fire in a pizza oven this weekend.

"It is dangerous to use accelerants in this way, or on barbecues or when starting any outdoor fire or cooking facilities.

"If using barbecue lighter fuel it should be used sparingly and only prior to ignition. Never add lighter fluid after the fire has been lit. In the case of pizza ovens, dry kindling wood should be used, before introducing larger pieces of wood or logs.

"We would urge the public to avoid the use of accelerants on any fire of this type."

This is why huge numbers of firefighters were in Llandudno tonight
The operation saw crews from across North Wales called to what they believed to be a genuine emergency

There were dramatic scenes in Llandudno tonight as firefighters swarmed the town's Broadway Boulevard nightclub. Pictures showed several fire engines and more than a dozen crew attending the popular night spot.

However, the reason behind the large scale emergency response may come as a surprise. Crews were called as part of a training exercise designed to test North Wales Fire and Rescue Service's response.

The operation saw crews from across North Wales called to what they believed to be a genuine emergency. However, it was in fact a simulation, organised with help from the nightclub's owners.

The carefully planned scenario involved fire crews from Llandudno, Betws-y-Coed, and Conwy. Firefighters used real equipment such as ladders and water pumps to simulate what they would do in a real emergency.

Images show scale of Llandudno mountain blaze that firefighters have battled for 15 hours
The fire on Cwm Mountain, near the seaside resort broke out last night and is ongoing

Fire crews are continuing to battle a mountain blaze this morning, on Cwm Mountain near Llandudno which broke out last night. The initial call to the fire service came at 7.37pm.

Five fire engines - from Caernarfon, Llandudno, Conwy, Abergele and Denbigh - were still battling the blaze at 10.45am today, after residents were told to close their doors and windows due to smoke. About 300sq meters of gorse was estimated to be on fire.

A message from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service earlier this morning said: "Firefighters are currently dealing with a fire on Cwm Mountain #Llandudno, Conwy, which is causing smoke in the area. Residents are advised to close windows and doors whilst we deal with this incident."

Another message form the fire service later said: "We are still in attendance at the fire on Cwm Mountain #Llandudno, affecting 300 square metres of gorse.

A freak house fire, which wrecked the upstairs, was sparked by a mirror inside a wardrobe reflecting the sun. It broke out on Mold Road, Wrexham, last night, close to Wrexham AFC's Racecourse Ground, at about 5.30pm.

Thankfully nobody was hurt in the bizarre incident, but such was the damage to the property, the occupants had to be rehoused, the fire service said. Three engines were at the scene to tackle the blaze, which was extinguished by 7.10pm. An investigation after established the strange cause.

According to the fire service it caused major fire damage to bedroom and some damage to the first floor, which was also smoke logged. The loft also received some fire damage.

North Wales firefighter cuts could put lives at risk - union

Plans to cut the number of fire stations and firefighters in north Wales could put lives at risk, according to a union.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it could reduce cover in some areas to help respond to emergency calls faster in rural locations.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) said managers need to look how to improve response times without making cuts.

The fire service said it will meet with union leaders to discuss the concerns.

In recent years, the service has had problems having enough staff on call in rural areas, where firefighters often work other jobs.

North Wales firefighters threaten strikes amid revamp plans

Firefighters in north Wales have threatened to go on strike over plans to overhaul the fire service.

More than 100 demonstrators protested against the plans in Wrexham on Saturday.

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) said the revamp would lead to a worse service in towns and cities.

North Wales Fire Service said it would meet union leaders to discuss their concerns and alternative proposals.

In recent years, the service has struggled with on-call staffing in rural areas, where firefighters often work other jobs.

It wants to put full-time firefighters on duty during the day in Corwen, Dolgellau and Porthmadog - but managers say this means they will have to save money elsewhere.

A senior fire officer has said some response times will be affected by Wales' new 20mph speed limit.

Assistant chief fire officer Stuart Millington said that while fire engines can exceed the speed limit, private vehicles driven by on-call staff could not.

Those using their own cars to get to stations during a call-out would be impacted, he said.

And as a result firefighters' attempts to attend a blaze could be delayed.

The claim came during a meeting on Monday with North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Conwy council.

Man loses two fingers after picking up unexploded firework
He was cleaning up after a display when the device detonated in his hand, setting fire to his clothes

A man has lost two fingers and suffered burns to his torso after a firework exploded in his hand. The man was cleaning up after a firework display when he picked up the device and it detonated, melting his clothes to his body.

Karli Dyce, who is related to the injured man, said he was using equipment to pick the objects up but his litter picker was not big enough to grasp the firework - so he picked it up with his hand - causing it to explode.

He remains in hospital and that he will need additional surgery. She added: "He's been told he'll need multiple surgeries. He's not in a good headspace at the moment. The severity of the incident is really sinking in. This will cause a significant impact on his life. He could never work again."

The cause of a fire, which led to the tragic death of an elderly man was confirmed today by fire chiefs. A man in his 80s was found dead in the bedroom of his home on Marston Drive in Rhos on Sea, last week.

The North Wales Fire & Rescue Service today identified the source of the blaze as a microwaveable wheat bag. They are now appealing to neighbours to "look after each other this Christmas" in the wake of the tragedy.

The fire service was called to the property on Marston Drive at 8.34am on Wednesday December 6 by North Wales Police after they received a report regarding concern for the safety of a man. Police officers confirmed there were signs of fire at the properly and discovered the man, believed to be in his 80s, in a bedroom.

?The cause of the fire appears to be a microwaveable wheat bag which had been placed under the bedclothes on the gentleman?s bed. Microwavable Wheat Bags are often used to provide heat to painful areas on the body and often have an aromatic smell.

"What we have to remember is that a product that absorbs and stores heat in this way is a potential fire risk if not used properly. If a wheat bag is insulated after heating ? for example under bedclothes, it may ignite.?

One taken to hospital after candle sparks fire in Rhos-on-Sea house
The blaze broke out after the candle was left unattended

A person was taken to hospital after a fire sparked by a candle in Rhos-on-Sea, in Conwy, last night (Saturday). It happened shortly before 9.40pm.

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service sent two engines from Colwyn Bay to the scene on Wainwright Close. The fire was out on arrival but it caused smoke damage to the property.

A fire service spokesperson said: "The cause of the fire was a candle left unattended. A person was taken to hospital for treatment."

PS
Two engines were sent to a house fire in Whitford, Flintshire, shortly before 12.50am. It involved logs, caused by heat from a nearby log burner. There were no injuries. The lounge was smoke-logged following the incident.

Do not stack wood close to your wood burner to dry out, it happened to me years ago, fortunately I was in the room when it started to smoke.

Six fires in two days in North Wales - and all for the same reason
As temperatures fall, fire crews are seeing a spate of chimney fires

Fire crews had a busy week attending incidents across North Wales, all caused by the same reason. With temperatures plunging, they had six call-outs for chimney fires in three counties.

With the winter's first real cold snap underway, and the prospect of worse to come, North Wales Fire & Rescue Service (NWFRS) urged people not to get caught out. "We?re encouraging everyone to only burn dry/seasoned wood ? and to get their chimneys cleaned and checked at the earliest opportunity

A point to note from previous experience ................. :-[
Not having your chimney swept can sometimes invalidate your home insurance in case of a fire. The recommendations are as follows: Once a year- Chimneys with solid fuel appliances, smokeless fuels, gas or oil appliances. Twice a year- domestic, bituminous coal.

Battery warning issued after e-bike battery sparks North Wales house fire
Fire chiefs are urging people to check items with lithium batteries such as laptops or mobile phones

Fire service chiefs have issued a battery warning after an e-bike fire at a house in Old Colwyn, in Conwy, on Wednesday. Nobody was hurt, but people have been urged to check on any household items that may contain lithium ion batteries.

A North Wales Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "Crews were called to a fire in Old Colwyn on Wednesday night involving an e-bike battery. Thankfully, smoke alarms sounded and everyone in the house escaped unharmed. Remember to test your smoke alarms to make sure they are working, and close doors to prevent fire spread before heading up to bed.

Bangor: Neighbour burning rubbish sparks smoke warning
It's a bit early in the gardening season but I bet that there will be a few bonfires in the gardens in Llandudno  in the Summer.
We had a neighbour who lived in a dilapidated bungalow and he was forever lighting bonfires in his front garden.    One day there was a bonfire lit that Guy Fawkes would have been proud of but one of the neighbours must have been concerned about the danger of the fire and phoned the Fire Brigade.
With it's blue lights flashing and the siren going the fire engine raced to the property and promptly put the fire out.
I was told that the man had a good telling off and never lit a bonfire there again

A fire which badly damaged two houses started in a tumble dryer - the fourth such blaze in North Wales in a month, fire chiefs have revealed. Emergency crews rushed to the properties in Broughton yesterday (Saturday) morning in a huge 999 response.

No-one was hurt but the upper parts of both homes - which are linked - on Broughton Hall Road were fire damaged.

Fire Service Advice....
Keep your dryer well ventilated, make sure the vent pipe is kink free and not blocked or crushed in any way. Always clean out the filter after using your tumble dryer. Always allow each drying programme, including the 'cool down cycle', to complete fully before emptying the machine.
