(I have revived this thread from the old forum, bringing across the most relevant bits)
Mike, I had some thoughts to maybe help drum up business for you.
You might have considered them, but ideas such as making sure that the major hotels have your flyers in them.
Also near the tram stations, and the No 73 bus shelter.
Get some signs on lamp-posts on the roads leading up the Orme. Starting before Ty Gwyn Road.
Fester
OOOOhhhh-I make the headlines and the whole thing goes wrong. Well I suppose that might be a snapshot of my life, am I Frank Spencer in another life. Or----Or----could it be Maesdu, North Wales Golf, Conwy Golf have got together to stifle the opposition? LONG PAUSE No, I don't suppose so!!!
Mike
How about having a small sign at the bottom of the course, by where the path from Haulfre Gardens to Rofft Gate runs? I think quite a few people use it in Summer.
DaveR
How about Mike organising a 'Llandudno Local' competition for forum members and then DaveR can send photos of the event into the local press?
This may help successfully launch the new venture.
Bri Roberts
That's a good idea, Bri, assuming we have enough golf playing members. I'd be happy to take some photos.
I just did a Google search on the course to see what came up and I got:
MINI GOLF - HAULFRE GARDENS Llandudno
9 hole pitch and putt in the scenic surroundings of Haulfre Gardens, Llwynon Road, Great Orme. Also putting green at Happy Valley.
Time Open daily Easter to October, 9am to early evening.
Admission charge YES
Contact: +44 (0)1492 875060
That got me thinking - what's the best way to describe it in terms of its location?
Haulfre Gardens Mini Golf?
Haulfre Gardens Pitch & Putt?
Great Orme Mini Golf?
Great Orme Pitch & Putt?
Whatever name Mike chooses, I think its a very good idea to put a little map showing how to get there on any leaflet he produces!
DaveR
I agree, that's an excellent idea Bri.
I am not a golfer but I do enjoy a go around a pitch & putt or putting green. And who knows we could create a few "bunkers" at the same time for you Mike to make the course more scenic and realistic. Only joking!!
Stan
Thanks for all your suggestions, in particular a Llandudno local competition. I had'nt thought of that!!! I've spent a bit of time thinking about the name. As it stands I think it is confusing. As at ths moment it is Great Orme putting green for this one and Happy Valley pitch and putt for the other Municipal golf facility. I feel a complete stranger would think the Happy Valley facility would be the larger. I myself fancy Great Orme 9-hole miniature golf, a bit of a mouthful but---. This is one of the things I will have to discuss with Conwy CBC as soon as pos.
Mike
Your golf course is right behind my house, and I looked seriously into taking the lease on.
I think it could be a great venture. I'm delighted for you and those who will use it.
When I looked into it I wasn't sure how such a large expanse could be maintained.
Do you have a 'sit and ride' mower? Or will CCBC maintain it for you as part of the lease agreement.
I think your idea of using Great Orme in the name is a good one. However, miniature golf conjours up a vision of a tiny crazy golf course. Yours is a fair old size.
What about calling it Great Orme Family Golf?
That might make tourists make the trip up the road to give the kids something better to do than pumping coins into machines in the arcades?
Like I said the other night....I wish you all the very best of luck with this. I WILL be a customer!
Fester
I like Fester's idea of Great Orme Family Golf as a name.
With Joe Public, there seems to be a lot of confusion about what Pitch & Putt actually is? I have to confess that I wasn't 100% sure what it meant up until a day or so ago. So its basically a 9 hole course and you have two clubs, one to pitch the ball onto the green, and then another to putt the ball into the hole!
As far as advertising goes, it may be worth asking CCBC what they can offer you, is there a spare space for a large poster on the attraction advertising columns by the Pier gates? There's a couple of websites that list Llandudno's attractions, once Mike is up and running, I will add his details into them.
DaveR
Fester----If you think because your house is right behind this golf facility---and I'm looking to double/treble the patronage----your risk of a golf ball through your windows is trebled!!! I've heard all about this compensation culture. Mike P.S. Ive looked through the "Emoticons" but I cannot find a "tounge in cheek" sign. I'll reply to your other points when I am in a more serious mood
Mike
Hello Fester, Thanks for your interest, I'm sorry your long post is lost. I made a few posts in answer to various suggestions from several members, but They are all lost as well and, to be honest, I dont think I can recall all of them. So, rather than appear to be ignoring someones good suggestion, I'm just going to forget every post in this forum from the last week or so. But---your recent points. Grass maintenance is covered by Conwy CBC, some grass will be cut every two weeks, the longer rough stuff every two months or so, fertilisazer every so often. All I have to do is keep it tidy, remove rubbish, maybe trim around the holes. As to a name---I think I'm a clever beggar who has all the best ideas, but---I quite like Great Orme Family Golf. I only wish I had thought of it before you!!! And, if you are going to be a customer, welcome. No charge (wisper, provided you bring three paying people with you) Only joking. Indeed, any members o.f this forum are most welcome to play for free.Of course this cannot last, Conwy CBC will want their pound of flesh in the shape of rent regardless
Mike
Wouldn't dream of playing for free and taking advantage of you, instead if you let me know when you are opening I'll make plans to give you some patronage very soon.
It would have to be one helluva wayward shot to hit my house, its just by Wyddford School on Llwynon Rd.
The goats are a bigger threat to my house !!
Fester
You definitely need better advertising, I didn't know about the pitch and putt until reading this thread.
So are there 5 golf related activities situated on the Orme?
Brumbob
Well, I can think of four including my own. What is this fifth one? Go on, spoil my day!!
Mike
Are we including the Putting green at West Shore as being on the Orme? If so....
West Shore Putting Green
Mike's Great Orme Family Golf
Summit Crazy Golf
Happy Valley Putting Green
Alpine Adventure Golf at the Ski Slope
DaveR
oops miscount I was including http://www.williamsgolf.co.uk/section/15/golf_design_GOLF_TO_RETURN_TO_THE_GREAT_ORME?.html (http://www.williamsgolf.co.uk/section/15/golf_design_GOLF_TO_RETURN_TO_THE_GREAT_ORME?.html)
Brumbob
That was an optimistic scheme, to say the least! No chance CCBC would allow it on the Orme.
DaveR
Might even come and visit when I am on one of my rambles !
Nemesis
Phew, thats a relief, I need more competition like a hole in the head. Lets just have holes in one. Nemesis, feel free to ramble around the course, I have been told already that I will be doing plenty of that, picking up beer cans etc after the night before.
Mike
There's not many golf courses (including St Andrews) that can rival the view from this one. If you manage to get some advertising flyers' going Mike, maybe you could display a photo similar to this one:
"Panoramic views of Llandudno, Anglesey, the Carneddau mountain range and beyond"
"Refreshments" is always a good bet - especially for people who have made their way up there, and played a few rounds in the summer.
I seem to remember you have a van Mike? You could get a hold of some plastic patio furniture - couple of tables and some chairs, then lay them out on the edge of the course for patrons to rest after playing, or for parents/grandparents to wait while the kids are playing etc.
Buy a bulk load of snack food, chocolate biscuits, sweets, cakes (Mr Kippling does make exceedingly good ones), sodas etc, which you could sell for a small profit, which can then be consumed at the patio furniture 'picnic area' (don't forget a rubbish bin). I'm not sure if there's an electricity supply in that hut in order to boil a kettle for teas & coffees? You could always progress to filled sandwiches & rolls if it takes-off.
Steve
Some good ideas, Steve, especially having the tables and chairs. Mike will know better, but I don't think there's any electricity or water laid on to the hut? He could always have a large cooler bag filled with cans/bottles etc
. DaveR
Everyone joining in with great ideas...really encouraging!
If you don't fancy the outlay or hassle of offering food and drinks then what about having a reciprocal arrangement with The Kings Head Pub and Haulfre Gardens tea rooms. (Both very close by)
Along the lines of, they display your advert including prices and more importantly directions. I return you could advertise those places on your scorecards...or just by word of mouth at the end of each round?
Fester
Fester, you've reminded me that I was going to suggest that Mike has a stock of his leaflets on the counter or a poster in the Haulfre Gardens tearooms
. DaveR
Just read all these posts with suggestions, 22.15 p.m., only just got in from painting the boxes to go on the teeing off spots. So please excuse me if I don't reply until tomorrow. But I must write to Steve. It was just plain ignorant to give you someone elses name, all I can say is Sorry, and I mean it. In real life face to face conversations I don't use peoples name at all, but in forums I do, a lot, because its the only way to identify who you are "speaking" TO. So thats my excuse, not much of one
Mike
You have indeed been busy Mike!
My wife commented that the teeing off markers (red ones) are in place. All systems go then!
Fester
No, far from it. The main delay is getting Public liability insurance, without that Conwy cbc wont issue a licence. Quite apart from the fact that the premium has gone up since last year (paid by the previous operator) from £200 and something to a MINIMUM of £500, apparantly all the brokers are luke warm, they don't really want to do it. Ive got two firms hunting for me, one of which has arranged the insurance up here for over 25 years. The excuse they are getting is, guess what, its all because of the losses the insurers have made recently. So stray golf balls in Llwynon Road are putting the worldwide financial market in danger.
Mike
Mike, I used G.M.Imber for my P.L.Insurance.
They specialise in niche businesses...and I found them very cheap indeed. Much less than £200 for me.
Fester
Steve and Fester, thanks very much indeed. I must say that I had never heard of this firm, but I've been on their website and downloaded and sent off an application form. So I am keeping my fingers crossed. Just as a matter of interest, I only started trying to get this insurance around a week ago. Because it was only a week or so ago I was told I could have the golf site. The previous operator of 24 years experience up there told me yesterday I would take £300 on the weekend, £100 each day on Saturday,Sunday and Monday. He was serious. So,in view of the fact that the rental has been agreed for the whole of the summer, I am, in effect, £300 out of pocket already, and I hav'ent even opened. So, I'm not a very happy bunny (or goat) Mike P.S.Never mind free rounds of golf, if my application goes through for less than £500 and reasonably quickly, it'll be free beer for certain forum members.
Mike
Free beer! I hope you used first-class postage Mike!
Steve
Too true I used first class post, if East Grinstead was a bit nearer I'd have taken it by hand. To reply to various questions in the last few posts, no, I havent got a plan of the course. I've had a few problems in finding out where to put the teeing off markers, I think I've cracked it now. Refreshments. A very good idea, but I will have to tread very carefully here for fear of upsetting anyone. There are no toilets on the course. I am told that the nearest available to the public are in a cafe somewhere you get to from the bottom, so, I presume this is the Haulfre Gardens Cafe you mention. If my golfers are wandering in there and using their toilets, the last thing I want would be to upset them in any way i.e. selling refreshments. So, in a day or two I'll take a walk down there, find it, introduce myself and hopefully have a chat. I certainly won't mention food, there is nothing more likely to get a business persons back up than a newcomer coming along and his ideas spoil everything for every other trader. And then just see how it goes, it could be that they wer'nt bothered, but only time will tell.
Mike
You've been incorrectly informed, Mike. The nearest toilets are Public Toilets in Haulfre Gardens, quite separate from the Cafe. If you do down to the bottom bit of the course, through the gate on the right, and then keep left as you go downwards, you will come out at the Toilet block.
The Haulfre cafe owners are very pleasant people, I don't think you'd have a problem with them stocking your leaflets or a small poster. You're catering to a different market really, as far as refreshments go. I also think a small sign just by where the path down from the course comes out by the toilets is worth a try, even if its just a laminated A4 cardboard one.
I'll be in the area tomorrow lunchtime, so I will come up and take a look hopefully.
DaveR
Yes, taking a walk down to the cafe and introducing yourself is a good idea Mike. A reciprocal arrangement as Fester suggested may also benefit both business' "you scratch my back I'll scratch yours" so to speak.
Steve
Fester here again, poking his nose in with some words which I think might console you Mike.
You certainly are not £300 out of pocket, because the guy who owned it before will have been comparing takings with previous Easters.
This one has been a wash out because of the weather, just ask any of the traders on the Pier. You have avoided spending 2 or 3 miserable days sat in a hut watching grey drizzle.
There is nothing doing this Easter on any trade which takes place outdoors. Trust me I've suffered!
Roll on the warmer weather and the ''real'' holiday season.
Fester
Forgot to say, I was talking to this family by Black Gate whilst looking at the stalled trams and they said they were on their way up to play golf at Mike's course! So I gave them the bad news and said he should be up and running by next weekend hopefully.
DaveR
Oh, Dave, what can I possibly say? I would have loved to have met you at the course, indeed,I would love to have met anyone. I spent most of yesterday up there messing around and prepared to tell any customers that I would open asop. But No one came. Today I thought it was a pointless exercise telling people I was there, ready to go but I couldnt let them on!! I couldnt get any timber to spend time securing the shed to pass .the time. Also, having been a trader of one sort or another for most of my life, I knew that if people turned up with cash in their hand, I would have been tempted. And, I am fairly sure Conwy CBC knew this as well, I was told fairly sternly not to let anyone play under any circumstances until the agreement was signed. They must have read my mind. So I knew it wasent a fair risk, for a tenner or so I could have been caught out and thrown off for good before even opening. So I thought, if I'm not there, I wont be tempted. And I miss meeting Snakecorp.
Mike
What would be a good idea, Mike, would be to attach a poster to the door of the shed, saying something like 'Great Orme Family Golf - Opening Soon', so that any regulars (like the family I spoke to) wont think that it has shut down for good. Once you're up and running, a similar poster with opening times etc, may be a good idea also.
DaveR

Just to say that most of the posts above date from earlier in the year when Mike was setting up his Pitch & Putt course up on the Orme. I'll leave it to Mike when he next pops in to update us all on how he's done this season.
I believe he's staying open until the end of October (weather permitting), all the details on how to find the course are on the website here:

Fester here...
Can you hear me Major?
Its my first stab at this new fangled Forum
I came home from work in the gloomy evening light tonight...it was raining approx 6.30pm, and Mike was STILL open and STILL had customers, so I hope (if you are listening) ..you are raking it in my friend.
D)
-
A fair few been there when I have come down from the Orme in the mornings. Keep up the good work Mike
-
I just found this old photo, titled as 'Mickey & Brian - Haulfre Pitch & Putt'. Can anyone tell us more about it - it was uploaded to the old forum at some point:
-
Looks like Hugo sitting on the right, if I'm not mistaken. 8)

i saw this comment on one of the BBC webpages about Llandudno. Seen any ghostly monk golfers, Mike?
Alison, Llandudno
Several years ago my two boys were playing golf on the Great Orme mini golf course after closing. It was just starting to go dark and they were taking turns when one of my boys looked across to the houses by Tyn Y Coed Road. They explained that, floating above the houses on the top of the Orme rock, was a man in a brown cloak, which was tied around his middle. They said it was a cloak with a hood and the hood was up. The man appear to be watching them, but the scary thing was he was floating above the Orme! They did not appear scared by this sighting as they mentioned it in a matter of fact manner a few days later. I understand that years ago monks used to reside on the Orme. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Yes that's me on the right Trojan and Mickey Kirkham (Jas' youngest brother) on the left. It was taken over 50 years ago which is quite frightening!
-
I heard you were a caddy for St Tudno Hugo. 8)
-
Saw your advert on the prom in Colwyn Bay today Mike so i take it you are still open.
-
EErrrr----NO. I take it you mean my trailer which was parked (abandoned) towards the Old Colwyn end. I finished at the course on Sunday evening so, for the first time all summer, Monday this trailer was parked more or less outside where I live. Give it the benefit of the doubt, Three hours later I get messages, "we cannot see out of our windows, a nasty trailer is stuck outside." Needless to say the nearest window was about fifty yards away and about 20 feet higher!!! So, in a temper, I shifted it down to the nearest place I could think of, the prom. Now its well away, before the CBC had a chance to have a go at me

.......or Oscar. ;D
-
Why Oscar? Is he that sort of a person, or has he got a particular objection to trailers? Ive have read his blog very occasionally, I could'nt really get into it, so I dont know much about him, only what I have read about him in this forum I doubt very much if I would ever be a reader in the future, I cannot really afford any more of my time reading blogs and certainly not on a regular basis
-
There's not that many local blogs left to read, Mike! Quite a few of them seem to have shut up shop in the last few months. ;)
-
Hi Mike, I see that you've hung your clubs up for the season. You've put many hours into that venture of yours so I hope you enjoyed it all and had a good season.
You can put your feet up a bit now and relax and I hope you get to go on that holiday that you were talking to me about.
I'll look forward to reading all about it on the forum.
-
Thank you, Hugo, for a really nice comment
-
I was wondering Mike, did you actually make a profit with this venture?
-
Yes, Trojan, I certainly did. But----before anyone gets the wrong idea----it was a lot of work, quite a bit of it done in the evening printing out leaflets etc. Having said that, I paid out virtually NIL wages. I doubt whether anyone could make a go of it employing someone to run it. Not least because, and not wishing to blow my own trumpet, no employee would go around shaking hands, clapping when someone got a good putt etc.etc.
-
Congratulations on making a profit Mike, from the comments about you on the forum you deserve it. Good luck for next season.
-
Golf looks a little dangerous to me. L0L

I've been away for a couple of days, but on my return I find that Mike ''birdseyeviewofwales'' has meta-morphasised, into ORMEGOLF !
Was this done Doctor Who style? Did he have to have a tearful demise, followed by a rising Phoenix style into a new physical form??

Orme Golf. Tresspassers will be exterminated. :>:>
-
Fester and Yorkie, Ive just noticed your posts. Reason for the user name change-----I got fed up with wearing my "key" finger typing BEVOW etc etc Mike
-
We went to the viewing point on Anglesea Road yesterday afternoon and rather than tackle the slippy roads on the way back we decided to walk through Mike's golf course. I can report that Mike's course is playing Winter Greens at the moment and Flurescent Orange Balls will be required to play all of the golf holes!
-
I WISH TO POINT OUT THAT THERE IS A CHARGE FOR WALKING OVER THIS GOLF COURSE. However (in a nice voice) seeing as I stuck a direction sign on your wall all summer, I'll forget it for you Mike
-
You should be levying a charge for SLEDGING down it pal!
You would be raking it in at the moment.
-
I must admit there is something really comforting (Spring must finally be here) in hearing the the sound today of Mike's Land Rover and trailer rattling it's way up the Orme, past the house and onto the Golf Course. Welcome back Mike.

I'm relatively new here, and perhaps pleased by simple things, but any indication that spring is coming with the lighter evenings and less windy times is definitely something to be looked forward to.

It certainly is. :)
I love the summer evenings when it stays light until after 10pm.
-
Thanks for the welcome back. I must throw away my greasegun, don't want to silence the rattles!! In writing I note you are glad there should be less winds. Its a bit late to tell you but I have always reckoned that Llandudno is one of the windiest spots in North Wales because it has two coasts, and if the wind is'ent coming from one it will be coming from the other. Another idle bit of information which I THINK, I'm not sure, that I read in the forum-----that the last few months has been a period of exceptionally low winds. Mike
-
Don't you believe it Mike-- we had some terrible windy days last month !

Mike, when I was on the Pier talking to Fester on Tuesday, two attractive girls came up to me to ask where they could find the 'Great Orme Family Golf'. I told them all about you but pointed out that you might not yet be open. Is it definitely April 1st you're opening?

Attractive were they Dave? You know I can't say I noticed that.... L0L L0L

Girls on the pier asking after me!!!! Maybe fifty years ago, every now and then. Oh, sorry, I misread your post, it was the golf they were asking about. The official date by Council command is April lst. But, it has been known for a quick phone call to me to produce strange results, flags flying from little posts etc. Say no more. Mike

Mike after today's Orme Golf leaflet spreading exercise I'm happy to report that a lot of the hotels/guest houses we visited to drop off flyers already had a set in the trays along with all the other "what's to do in Llandudno" leaflets. Where possible I made sure that yours now takes pride of place in the leaflet set. We also dropped off the leaflets at a lot of the smaller B&B's and self catering establishments round the bottom of the Orme. I also left a few in the Cottage Loaf and have to admit that is the first time I've been in and out of the place without tasting the goods.
-
Re- the Cottage Loaf.
Well done on that front, Medz. They are not renowned for assisting any other local business.
In fact the last approach I heard about was met with a degree of hostility!

Thanks for the leaflets !! You should have called for a cuppa !

I grew up on Llwynon Rd opposite the golf course & used to love it when the council came to cut the grass. They had a Land Rover that used to pull mowers behind it & if he was in a good mood the driver (Richard) would let me and my mates sit in the back whilst he drove up & down cutting the course (probably breaking every rule in the book!). In the brighter evenings we used to use one of the greens to play British Bulldog, Football or Tip etc...
As well as being good for sledging in the winter we also found that in the summer when it got very dry you could slide down from the top right hand corner on a piece of cardboard, it was even better in the rough along the right hand edge as the longer grass seemed to reduce the friction and you could get more speed up. Being so young we didn't appreciate the damage this caused to the grass and all the bits of spent cardboard also started to build up and look unsightly.
The little estate opposite the course was built in the late sixties and a lot of young families moved in in 1969 so there was quite a gang of us kids in the early 70's, so you can appreciate how much use we made of the course when it was closed for the winter or late in the Summer evenings.
-
I imagine it was just a coincedence but the Landlord of the Cottage Loaf and some of his family came up for a game around abouts Wednesday, probably before themedz put out the leaflets. I'm not sure what problem you have heard of Fester, but they certainly appeared to enjoy themselves with me. Mike

That brings back memories. Myself and my mate used to do the same on Maesdu Field when they used to cut the grass. Can't remember the Land Rover driver's name though. Health & Safety would have a Field Day ;D if that were to happen these day's.

Paddy, Eddie & Chris Linden, Alan & Ben Casey, Steve Brett......... ;)
-
I know them all. Paddy, Eddie & Chris actually lived right behind me in an older house that the estate was built next to, Alan & Ben lived just off the estate further down Llwynon Rd. Steve Brett lived on the estate at No.59, his younger brother Paul works for the same company as myself. Small world!

I've only just seen these last few posts. I wondered where all the "likes" were coming from

I met Mike this evening and also played the course for the first time in my life after having played the ones down in Happy Valley many times during the sixties and seventies.
It was a shame it began to rain around the sixth hole but it was a very good excuse for our group to make our way early to the Kings Head.
I would imagine the views are quite stunning when playing those holes towards the top when the weather is fine.
-
The weather must have cleared somwhat yesterday-- when I went up mid morning the summit wasn't visible from the Summit Car Park !
-
I could certainly see the waves pounding the shoreline over towards the Little Orme from the fourth hole around 8pm.
-
I abandoned work today, soon after 5pm...as I was flogging a dead horse.. >?>??
But, I couldn't help but notice that Mike was still open, and quite a group of lads were on the 8th green.
I hope business is picking up for you Mike. :golf:

I was two cars behind you at the traffic lights in Augusta Street today about 10.00am so I guess that you were on your way up the Orme when I turned off up Trinity Avenue,
Hope that you have a great season up there and I'll pop over when I'm next walking there.
-
I reckon we should all meet up and have a golf competition on Mikes Golf course...........in the evening :D
-
Count me in Pen.
-
Nice one Paddy.
For all those who can't play golf I shall be needing the services of A CADDY and a BUGGY DRIVER _))*
-
I'm up for that.
-
For all those who can't play golf I shall be needing the services of A CADDY and a BUGGY DRIVER _))*
I can play golf but can't manage the walking now, so will volunteer as a combined Caddy and Buggy Driver plus sandwich and drinks server. ZXZ
-
ok that's two points off my list. Next......................ah yes Golf clubs and Buggy ;D
-
This sounds like a nice idea. I would add that normal charges would not apply---maybe a big bucket for golfers and their caddies to fling their cash in. When it gets enough to buy me a couple of pints the golf course will close.
-
sounds like a plan Mike $good$
-
Had a lovely walk around the Orme with my Mum and the children today and it was great to meet you Mike! Thanks for letting us cut through (can't believe I've never been through that way before) I think my Dad and the children will be paying you a visit for a couple of rounds tomorrow, if this great weather keeps up !
-
I'll join in the Forum golf competition - I'm useless at golf but somebody's got to come last!
-
It was good to meet you yesterday evening, Mike, as I was walking past. Hope you have a good season.
-
Thanks Blodyn, the pleasure was all mine. And to find out you live in the area, there is a lively hotspot for forum members up the Orme.
-
I think this is the first time I have ever started off a thread on this my own site. Everything I have written in the past was a response to another post. But I must write this. Yesterday I spotted a gentleman walking up my entry road carrying (struggling) with five carrier bags obviously full of golf balls. I thought "eye eye heres a salesman" and waited. But, no. "Here you are. I'm the Father of ------ and Ive brought these for you they are only taking up space in my house." His daughter is a forum member, I have met her but I'm not going to give her name. But how nice. Mixed golf balls are only cheap---but not THAT cheap. He wouldnt accept any money, just my promise not to charge him if he ever comes for a round.
-
Plenty in my garden too if you ever run out ! !
-
Thanks Blodyn, the pleasure was all mine.
Don't you think that's rather selfish Mike? 8)
-
I can't pay golf very well but am game to have a go if something is arrange!!
-
Hi white rabbit, Do you want a round for free then? ;) ;)
-
There was a bit of a delay at the 7th Tee on Mike's Golf Course today but I thought it best not to butt in
-
Never mind the 7th tee --- I offered Hugo a drink of TEA, and then realised I had already drunk it all!!
-
Never mind Mike, it's the thought that counts. $drink1$
-
Is the course open Sunday? Wouldn't mind popping down for a game, weather should be should nice enough ZXZ
-
Mike is open 7 days a week... soon after 10am... weather permitting.
To be honest, Sunday's forecast looks lousy B2R.
-
Thanks to Born2run for enquiring, and also to Fester for answering the question. Where would I be without friends like that ? A few more friends like Fester and I wouldnt have to do any work, just sit back and let them do all the worrying and answering!!! Anyway, today, Saturday, started off terrible weather wise, me in McDonalds until around 11 a.m. looking up at the Orme, have another coffee, cancel the helper I had coming. But around midday the clouds lifted and I had a very reasonable afternoon and early evening. So here is hoping for tomorrow. Hope to see you, Born2run. No running around the course, no cycling, no this, no that. Thats according to the Council who own the land, but I've lost the instructions---so welcome. Mike
-
If the weather is too bad for me to work... it will be too bad for me to come and play golf I fear... :( :(
-
Mike's empire has expanded to the Putting Green at Happy Valley. He tells me that he will be running it for the next 5 weeks, in addition to the Great Orme Family Golf up at Llwynon Road. If you know of anyone that would like a round, please send them up to Happy Valley (the Green is just by the Cable Car Station).
-
I always thought that was owned by The Headlands Hotel.
Good luck Mike!
-
Thanks for the kind message Fester (To tell the truth I've only taken this on so that I can keep an eye on what you are up to on the Pier)
-
Ha ha ... then you will find it a most tedious endeavour....
-
I've just noticed the new banner for the golf course on the Forum, Mike. The banner and your website look very good. Hope the weather improves and you get plenty of custom. Perhaps some fluorescent golf balls would help? :)
-
Thanks for the message Blodyn. I don't imagine this weather is doing the flowers that feature in your photos much good---but, I may be wrong. Generally do they like rain but not wind? Or are they all different?
-

I should mention at this point that Mike has generously agreed to have a Banner Ad on the Forum, in order to support it with the running costs. $thanx$ $good$
-
I would'nt like to claim that I was generous. The sole purpose of advertising is to get more cash in your till, and I think this advert will do that. Having said that, it is nice to be able to support something at the same time.
-
Not sure if anyone has asked before Mike, but is there any parking other than on the roadway? In other words can you drive into the narrow entrance to the course and park?
By the way I have a quantity of golf balls which are no use to me (long story). If they are any good to you, I will let you have them.
-
Yes, there is room for three or four cars to safely park on the course. I say safely meaning they wont be hit by very wayward golf balls. Having committed myself in print here, I had better go on to say that in the agreement I have with CBC it states "no cars on the site." I think that was put in to stop any possible use as a car boot sales (as if any upright person such as myself would think of doing anything like that HaHa) Thanks for the offer of golfballs. I go through a fair amount because I cannot bring myself to charge any one for lost balls. Unlike the previous operator who wrote a sign in the shed "lost balls. 80 pence." Its a wonder no one ever gave him a thick ear because it is common knowledge that mixed golf balls can be purchased (in quantity) off ebay at under 20pence each.
-
I will pop up sometime in the next day or so Mike and bring some golf balls with me.
-
That reminds me Mike,
I had a family of customers the other day, who came to my shop in the appalling rain... but they had also just played your course in the rain, and loved it!
They also said that they had lost a couple of balls on the 7th and 8th holes, but the ''very kind gentleman'' let them have replacements, for no charge.
They will be back Mike, I have no doubt of that.
-
At the Southern end of Mike's Golf Course, there used to be a stone Tower (marked on maps and visible in the photo below). What was it used for and when was it removed?
-
I have a framed map from 1889 hanging on my hall wall and I can see a building called Birmingham Villa which looks to be somewhere above the gate from Haulfre and Invalid's Walk.---- too far over to be below the Golf Course, but there were quite a few buildings in the old 'Pleasure gardens'
-
Thanks for the message Blodyn. I don't imagine this weather is doing the flowers that feature in your photos much good---but, I may be wrong. Generally do they like rain but not wind? Or are they all different?
Sorry to be so long in replying, Mike, I've been away.
The wild flowers around here are well adapted to the conditions, so they're generally pretty tough. Even something which looks really delicate, like a harebell, is able to survive a surprising amount of wind and rain but you're right that some plants will stand up to wind / rain / drought better than others. Some will therefore flower better in some seasons than others but most of the perennials will survive, though life can be a bit harder for the annuals if there's very bad weather at flowering / seed time.
-
Well, thats what I thought---but I was'ent sure. Nice to have expert advice confirming my guess. I'm not too sure whether or not this is the correct place to ask this, but here goes. You say the flowers on the orme are pretty tough. But, so are a lot of the human residents. Do you know a lady who lives on Tyn y Coed Road, I believe works for Social Services and knows a lot about the Ormes wild flower life---I believe she even takes groups of interested people on informal walks around. The reason I ask is that she frequently walks down to town through the golf course and always has a medium size dog (dont ask me what breed, at a guess Heinz 57, ). I havent seen her for about five or six weeks, very unusual. Anyway yesterday the dog arrived, by itself. I gave it a bit of biscuit and tried to get it on a bit of old rope I had, it wears a collar, but it wasent having any of that. It took off towards Tyn y Coed, I followed, it went into a garden, the gate was open, so I ran behind, shut the gate, and knocked on the door. No answer. So I left the dog in the garden, it obviously knew the place, its tail was wagging when I knocked on the door. Any ideas? Its just a worrying niggle in my mind!!
-
Yes, I know the lady whom you mean. She's a real expert on wild flowers - much better than me. I'll call round tomorrow and see if she's there.
-
Mike, all is well. The lady and dog were both in this morning and she hadn't realised that the dog had been out alone. How nice of you to be concerned.
-
Oh, good, I'm glad to hear that. It was just so unusual, I never seen one without the other, and then I see the dog wandering around by itself.
-
I've come back to this old thread because John Oddys mention of a golf championship appears to have aroused a bit of interest judging by the number of posts all in 48 hours.
The joking references to a big prize to be donated by our moderators. A good laugh.
But, seriously, I have a 2 to 3 foot model of a golfer which I might throw in as a reward to the winner. But its worth a few bob, an exact copy was for sale last year in Mostyn Street for £100. I bought it for £80 through ebay and intended to use it for publicity of the putting green in the Happy Valle. But I changed my mind because it is fairly fragile, it wouldnt stand being knocked over very often.
Now I might throw money around, but £80 worth is a bit too much. When I first read about this idea I thought O.K. I'll go along with that and it will be free to everyone and lets all have a nice day.
But now, if it seriously gets off the ground, I could offer that as a prize but charge everyone (no favourities, no Fester climbing over his fence) the top wack price I charge which is £4-50 per person.
I feel a bit mean in a sense, but say 17 members came and paid, I would break even, no profit, no loss, but a good day.
-
.....and how much do you charge for a golf buggy?.....well!...you don't expect me to WALK around a golf course, do you!
-
Oh dear, money hes been mentioned.
Suddeen loss of interest.
-
-
No loss of interest here, I'm all for it, a bit of fun, a day out, put faces to names and a few beers afterwards. I think its a great idea.

25% off eh? Does that mean that all size 8 shoes are now size 6? And XL Sweaters are now size M. Must have a spending spree before they sell out! L0L

No, please don't loose interest because of the cash. I just mentioned the trophy as an option. No trophy, it's all free, I will look forward to meeting you all again. Or with trophy, £4 50. Whichever you all think would be best. Mike
-
Mike,
£4.50 is not going to break anybody, I see no reason why it should be left to you to fund our fun.
What we do need is a show of how many members would be up for it, perhaps a nice summer's day, a bit of a buffet, a few drinks and a sociable get together may well be what we all need.
If I may be so bold as to suggest that Dave, Ian or both, start up a thread to see who is interested before we start to organise The Three Towns Masters Open Championship.
-
The new topic and poll is now here (http://threetownsforum.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,1519.msg44795.html#msg44795), folks.
-
I received a "circular" e-mail today from an unknown source asking me if I would like to meet other local people and couples interested in a threesome. Well I have heard of two ball fours, four balls, foursomes, and lots of other Golf groupings and games but never a threesome. I suppose such a thing could be useful if the Mrs was unable to play!
What do other Members think? L0L
p.s. I looked up some threesome pictures on the Internet but there wasn't a golf club in sight! ;D
-
Thats hilarious Yorkie, it really is.
You had better delete it before Mrs Yorkie thinks you are interested!
I get a lot of junk emails, but that one has not reached me yet.
I have to say though, I never get 'circular' emails, they are normally more rectangular or oblong in shape.
-
Since I changed to BT for the broadband etc around a year ago I never seem to get any junk emails, I had a new email address though and the old one must have been on many junk lists!

If you had been reading the Forum you may have noticed that I have already apologised that I will not be there, but that I am donating a Trophy for a "Hole in One".
That weekend is solidly booked with other more important (unfortunately) and activities! :P
-
I voted YES... so I will attend if it goes ahead... :golf:
-
Mike, slightly off topic but I'm hoping to go to Llanddwyn Island for a walk next Tuesday and I'm hoping that we can see the photo of the last lighthouse keeper on the Island who was a relative of yours.
I was talking about the walk over lunch in the Orient Express today and the friend I was speaking to knew her. He was a boy living in Dwyran at the time and used to visit Miss Owen there. According to the friend she went everywhere with her horse and cart and she used to give him lifts in the cart sometimes.
He also said that she kept sheep and chickens on the Island too.
I'll let you know how I get on. I did call at the course today but the weather was bad and I expect you had called it a day.
-
Hugo ---- so sorry to have missed you but, yes, I shut up shop. I did try for around an hour but even the goats had left me.
Now to Miss Owen. This is exciting news, but I must say that this friend of yours must be a good age.
He knew Miss Owen. Sounds like about three generations from the one I claim was my great grandmother.
I was always told that she was the last lady lighthouse keeper in the U.K. But it could well be that your friends Miss Owen is a granddaughter and she looked after the lighthouse. By that time it was probably out of action.
However its an amazing coincedence that you have met someone who knows someone from my distant family.
Let me know how you go on on your walk---only hope the weather is better for you. Mike.
-
Mike, I had a phone call from my friend who knew that I was walking in Newborough yesterday and he said that the lady who he knew was called Elizabeth Jones and her brother was the village Bobby so she wasn't your relative after all. Sorry about the duff information I had but I did go on that walk and went into the Pilot's cottages. I've taken a few photos from a notice board that was on a wall in the cottage.
There are two there of a Margaret Owen, could she have been a relation of yours?
-
Llanddwyn Island Pilot's cottages
-
Crossed lines a bit here--I've just put a post on your "walks" thread before I read this. Well, I don't know. My grandmother was Margaret Owen but she didn't really have anything to do with the island apart from marrying an Owen Owen from the village. She came from Llan Ffestiniog.
The photo doesn't ring a bell with me but I would think it is a fair bet that I am related to her though. It's just a coincidence that the two ladies had the same name. Not unusual. My sister went around the graveyard in Newborough fairly recently and she said there are around half a dozen Owen Owen's buried there, and Margaret was a very popular name. Mike
-
Am I to assume that the Golf planned for 8th June has fizzled out?
I am still up for it, (for a laugh) if we get 8 or so participants.
Please advise.

Count me in Fester.

I've been training solidly for the last month. I need to win this thing to help me get over not carrying the torch!

I particularly liked that photo Bri Roberts took of you in the Extravaganza Mike and thought you looked quite dapper on the bike.
Now that they have relaxed the cycling restriction on the Prom it would make a good advert for the course if you were seen cycling down the Prom. $good$

Just watch out for "men from the Council" hiding in bushes! ;)

I am not the boastful type. However, I am just about to make an exception.
Trip Adviser has a group pf businesses under the heading "Llandudno attractions." There are 74 of them covering all types from the grandest, largest, oldest, down to the bread and butter sites.
They are rated in importance, one to seventy-four, depending on the reviews sent in by customers/visitors.
Believe it or not, number five in this list is GREAT ORME FAMILY GOLF.
You don't believe it possible? No, neither did I, until I took a look.
(Now back to my old unboastfull self.) Mike

Hey, ormegolf. I have just read the excellent reviews. Well done, brilliant! I was worrying last week that you had been ill again because you hadn't been on here much but glad to hear you are doing well.

Well done Mike, you have put a lot of time and effort into it and thoroughly deserve the recognition. $good$

Not only do you work damned hard, but you are a marketing genius.... embracing all those social media ways of promoting your business is a credit to you.

_))*Yes i deff did understand Yorkies post. I think its too much texting with shortened words on my phone. I am dreadful for spelling these days . When younger i always worked in secretarial/receptionist posts so my job depended on my correctness ( no spellchecks then) just either an electric smith corona typewriter or if you were really unlucky and had powercuts the old Imperial manual machines.
-
Imperial aye? How about an Underwood? Before your time?
-
I remember Underwood, think there was one in the Office cupboard. I do remember at sixteen made to use one of those black imperials with big clonking keys. I had been taught at school to use a small electric so big culture shock. It made me a reasonably good typist though.

Is your Family golf open through to Half term?
-
Hello Linda and yes it's open until end October.
Having said that, there are days when boredom sets in, in particular midweek and early mornings and late afternoons. And midday as well! But my honesty golf is always in operation, 24 hrs a day.
All you do if you arrive and I am missing, just phone up and I will give you the hiding place for the key to clubs, balls etc etc. the flags are mostly out and the greens cut. Just play away and enjoy yourself. Mike

What a kind and considerate man you are Mike Ormegolf.

Lovely game me the missus and the baby had yesterday Mike $good$
Bit windy and that is to blame for my poor score!
Best attraction in Llandudno In my humble opinion and lovely to catch up with you Mike
-
It was nice to see the three of you. To be honest I do not enjoy being up there when these gusty winds are blowing. For a start me, personally, don't like the wind. Not at all. My cut off point is far lower than many of the golfers who arrive and want to play, and I almost find myself persuading them to forget it. Hows that for poor business.
With rain, especially sudden downpours, its easier. If they give up I just give them a voucher for a free game in the future when the weather is more settled.
Anyway, your young son enjoyed himself, tucked up warm and asleep in the pram. Mike
-
I saw this on my way to the pier today Mike, and instantly thought of you.
I reoriented the images, F. Ian.

thanks Fes. This is a lovely example of a very well looked after elderly coach. Of course the owners name is not unusual. Indeed there is a sizeable coach company runing under the name of Owens of Oswestry.
Just to be picky. My surname is Owen. No "s". Owen is far more common a name. We outnumber the Owens by about 20 to one, but it is amazing, and annoying, how many people mistakenly give us an s on the end. Of course, the issue of the possessive S also confuses the matter. In shall l say as an example Owen's golf course.
Bet you are now sorry you thought of me😀😀😀

Ian, thanks for that, but I wonder.... the images displayed the right way up on the post, when I checked them on my iPhone. Hmmm. I've had this issue before, causing you to amend them.

I'll do a check on our iPhones.

Whilst the golf thread is on the go for the first time for a good while By coincidence I've just received an email from trip advisor the course has been awarded certificate of excellence for the third year running. Hurray. Double hurray, it's has'ent cost me a penny.
-
I just read on the - You know you are from Llandudno - Facebook page that the new owners, who replaced Mike, have handed the course back to CCBC.
-
That's a shame they put in a lot of work and tried new things. No money in it I suppose

If the golf course has closed down then I think someone ought to consider removing this banner from the West Shore childrens playground.
