Title: Special Award of the Week
Post by: SteveH on August 23, 2018, 12:10:17 pm
The topic to enter outstanding acts of courage, bravery, generosity or stupidity.

North Wales Police were helping the Welsh Ambulance service on the B5115 in Penrhynside, near the Little Orme, on Monday when a driver moved the signs and then proceeded to drive around a police vehicle blocking the road.
If a roads closed, it’s for a very good reason.

"Not only did they move the cones/signs, when they were approached by officers they decided to challenge the reason the road was closed.     ref Pioneer

PS  My OH tells me he was flagged down by pedestrians, warning him, and somebody had to replace the sign and cones that he failed to reposition .

I see this car a lot, and it does on a daily basis leave room for mopeds, I may have been to quick to judge.    :-[

I read this story last week, and thought about posting it, but reading today about the trouble it has caused, definitely worth a mention........  This stupid driver despite plenty of warning signs, struck the bridge and jammed underneath, taking four days and specialist equipment to clear, now we here about this type of thing a lot, however it was the last sentence of the article, that made me curios, ....."A spokesman for Network Rail said: "Bridge strikes cost the taxpayer millions of pounds every year ."
Many years ago a friend hit a lamp post, and got the bill from the council, checking today it would appear to still be the case, this was not accidental, but negligent, and an extremely costly operation, but who pays  ?

Anglesey road re-opens following huge operation to remove lorry and railway bridge
A HGV hit the structure on the A5114 in Llangefni four days ago

Two huge cranes had to be brought in on Sunday to free the trapped truck from Ffordd Glanhwfa in Llangefni following the accident which happened on Thursday.
The bridge also had to be removed due to the level of damage caused.

It's not the first time that a lorry has been stuck under that particular bridge and I've seen a few near misses there in the past.
From memory there is a warning sign about the height on the bridge ( just over 13 foot I think )   but the road there is on a hill which makes getting stuck there very likely.  The only trouble is that it's on the main road from the A55 so most traffic use it.

I drove a horsebox all over the country for many years, and although I knew my truck height and the given bridge sign measurements, I never trusted them, and never took them for granted, many a time hanging out of the window, "double checking" and driving slowly, I still feel he was negligent, he must have been really moving to have struck/stuck so hard, that they considered lifting the bridge off the truck.

Have not had many contenders for the Special Award, so this is a good opportunity for this driver to win. :-\

Steve,  I've just gone on Google and had a look at that disused railway bridge and it has the height at 13 feet 3 inches on both sides of the bridge but as the road is on a hill it must reduce the height even more
It looks like the lorry was coming out of Llangefni to go to the A55 but how did it get into Llangefni in the first place?

Post by: SteveH on October 15, 2018, 01:38:51 pm
I do not know the road that well, but it looks a bit of a squeeze to get two vehicles side by side, under there, which makes me think that slow and careful is the way to go.

I hated the  13ft. bridges, they were very close to to my height, I just remembered petrol stations, you had to watch some of the older ones, their canopies could cause concern................hanging out the window again......... ::)

Post by: Hugo on October 15, 2018, 02:03:25 pm
It's a weird stretch of road and I used to use it quite often when I was working.    At that point it is not wide enough for two vehicles to pass each other.
There is a right of way system in place and traffic coming from Llangefni going towards the A55 has the right of way and it seems that the lorry was coming from the town so any traffic coming from the A55 direction would have had to find an alternative way into the town

I agree.  that's simply tackling effect, when we should be tackling the causes. It's not the overweight children that need tackling;  it's the poor parenting that's allowed them to become overweight.

I'll agree with that Ian, some parents shirk their responsibility and blame everyone else for the failings of their children.     I'm sure that I remember something being mentioned some time ago about parents being prosecuted on the grounds of cruelty to children if their children were obese but I've heard nothing about it recently

I am sure Gov't/ Councils have not helped over the years. How is it that there are so many food outlets, either sit or take aways ?
It seems people these days just can not stop eating. Perhaps it is being brought up in the 1940/50s but in them days we seemed to manage with breakfast ,mid day meal then tea and were a lot healthier for it.
Went through York Railway station a short while ago, a place I know well having been Station Manager there in the 1980s. Shocked to find the place has now got at least 10 food/drink outlets in place of the 2 refreshment rooms of my days there.

High Streets in most towns are the same.   WHY ?

I asked that question last week amongst a group of people I was with - the answer, it seems, is money - such establishments are very profitable, I am told.

So why are they profitable - because a high percentage of the people in town want to stuff their faces will all sorts of (often non-healthy) foods!

Not local, but a definite contender for the Special Award.

The contractors, hired by Anglesey Council carried out the work earlier in the week during heavy downpours

PITCH PERFECT   :'(       :'(

Red-faced council bosses have told contractors to sort out the damage they did when they rendered a football pitch unplayable with their grass cutting machines.

The pitch is on land owned by the Isle of Anglesey County Council who arrange for the pitch to be maintained.
Cllr Trefor Lloyd Hughes, former Football Association of Wales President, said he had asked the contractor to revisit the site.
He said: "Having received complaints on Saturday about the damage at the field I have requested the contractor, via the council, to make good the damage made by them to the satisfaction of Caergybi FC.

"I am also led to believe that there could be new contractors soon due to the contract coming to an end."

"Some remedial works have already been undertaken and more will be required.

“We recognise the hard work of volunteers in running a local football teams, like Caergybi FC, and would like to apologise to all associated with the club for the damage caused to the pitch.”
Caergybi FC manager Dale Moffat thanked football fans for their support in the past few days.  ref DP

I propose the Special Award for the week goes to Mostyn Estates. At a CCBC meeting this week the safety of pavements on Mostyn Street were discussed, apparently £200,000 has been set aside for a scheme of renewal & repair. The Council sent out 35 letters to businesses, shop owners & leaseholders as part of the pavements are privately owned, to ask them if they would contribute to the scheme. 10 people responded to the letters & only 4 agreed to contribute. The first phase is starting with the pavements from The Carlton Pub down to Cafe Nero and most of the the pavements from the shop frontage to the edge of the verandas are privately owned and are in bad repair, some are owned by Mostyn Estates. When the Council approached them their reply was, they had no intention of contributing anything and that it was the Councils responsibility. So you see fellow Council Tax payers the biggest landlord in Llandudno are expecting us to pay for repairs on their properties. Shame on you Mostyn Estates.
By the way if you fall & hurt yourself on these privately owned areas, don't go blaming and try & claim from the Council, you know who to go for  ;)

Thanks Meleri that's typical of Mostyn Estates.    I'm still waiting for them to dip into their coffers to pay for the Victorian street lamps and promenade shelters that they promised many years ago

Hugo a few years ago an elderly person tripped over a slab outside Burtons ,when I phoned Mostyn est they said so much is the shop so much Mostyns and then the councils , Mostyns don't mind taking the big rents in Llandudno but don't like taking responobility. Look at the old youth club 😡

This is what Mr Edward Hiller said in July 2013 about the Promenade shelters, but that was only 5 years ago so we'll have to wait a bit longer, probably a lot longer

"And Mostyn Estates managing director Edward Hiller said in addition to offering to make a financial contribution, the company had been able to supply the county council with the plans for the original shelters.

“We found plans dated 1899 in a desk drawer in the offices and these will be used as the template for the design of the new shelters which will mean they will look pretty authentic.

“We are prepared to put money towards the cost of the shelter and it would be good if other businesses or private individuals in the town were willing to match us pound for pound and do the same,” he added. "

Hugo about 4 years ago I was on the prom with the dog ,got chatting to !!!!! Sorry don't want to mention his name but he has done very well for himself with his job , he told me that the Council had the funding for 4 new shelters ,so one wonders is that money still in the accounts ,the shelter on deganwy prom is similar to the design for our prom ,after the deganwy Storm the shelter there has been rebuilt . This chap has nothing to do with Ccbc now .

If it hasn't been done by now Norman, I think we can write those shelters off as well as the promises from Mostyn Estates for the Victorian street lamps on the promenade.
On a more positive note that shelter on Deganwy promenade looks really impressive and well done to all those who were involved in the project

A bit more on the Pavement repair story mentioned above.

What landowner says to council demand it spend its own money repairing its own pavements
Conwy bosses want Mostyn Estates and other landowners to contribute to cost of broken pavements in the town, including those held in private hands.

Comment.
"Conwy CBC have no concept of what it means to be short of money in the retail sector. They operate in an environment of wasting money. Now they’ve built a monument to public sector wastage in Colwyn Bay comments such as those are an insult to tax payers. They can find £m’s when it suits but can’t repair footpaths!"

If the council fixes the pavements under the canopies then that area should no longer be allowed to be used by the store for display and sale of goods or provision of seated areas. Can't have it both ways.

If Coaches, Delivery Lorries and Cars for that matter, were prevented from Parking on the Pavements around the town in the first place, then the footpaths wouldn't be in such a parlous state. As long as they continue to do so,no amount of remedial repair will be able to keep up with what's required.

These issues will continue to get worse because of the UK's disastrously disorganised system of local authorities. There is no justifiable reason to even have local authorities. What is their function? What do they accomplish?

They may play a role in helping to sort out where bins have not been emptied, or why the town hall's next coat of paint should be a paler shade, but when you examine the calibre of the majority of councillors it's enough to bring on a heart attack.

Being a councillor is a job for which absolutely no qualifications are required, for which there are usually several candidates and which doesn't even require the successful applicant to remain awake during any of the overly-long meetings held by those whose main love in life is hearing the sound of their own voice.

Not one job they do couldn't be done more efficiently, more effectively and more cheaply by a decent private contractor.  They seem to specialise in doing the least they can as often as possible and pay a team of 'officers' to take the blame for their collective incompetence. The majority of councils are wracked by internal petty bickering, personality issues and a blinding lack of perception. And that represents their better points.

It would be a great deal easier if we simply elected the officers directly, and did away with the post of councillor; at least that way we'd only be paying one set of salaries.  Councillors bring a new meaning to the concept of 'incompetent'.  It's hard to identify their worst trait since there's such competition, but I would suggest that a lack of trust is the main one. And that's a sad commentary on the state of local politics in the UK.

I've often said that an elected Mayor is the answer in a town like Llandudno, together with an interactive website to allow residents to report problems/suggest new policies & ideas etc.

Title: Re: Special Award of the Week
Post by: Ian on December 20, 2018, 05:50:58 pm
The current system doesn't allow us any control over what happens. The worst that can happen is a councillor doesn't get re-elected at the next election.  A directly elected Mayor could be a good idea.

This made me smile............ :)

"When officers moved to arrest Williams in August this year, under Operation Loot, the 18-year-old jumped out of a back window and tried to run away barefoot and in his boxer shorts.

However he did not reckon with the athleticism of Sgt Ian Evans who raced up the street, caught him and slung him over his shoulder to be taken back to custody."    quote from the DP.

The strong winds last night caused quite a lot of damage according to the DP, however as far as I can see, the only problem  around the Gloddaeth Ave area,.........it's  "bin day", guess what happened during the night..........the Avenue looked like a recycling centre this morning, please note I said "looked"

Now it's not very often we complement CCBC on this forum, but just for a change, the award goes to the quick thinking person who arranged the clean up. just after 9am the small pavement sweeper arrived, closely followed by the bigger gully sweeper, great job, well done.    :)

This goes way beyond the "special award" section, my OH pointed this out to me on the Llandudno FB page, yesterday, unbelievable.

Video has emerged of a small child and what appears to be a woman standing on the sea wall at Conwy harbour during the Conwy Pirate Festival. It is not known if the man seen sea-fishing is connected to the group or not.

A woman who saw what was going on alerted RNLI volunteers, and it is understood one of them went over to warn the woman and child of the dangers of standing on the wrong side of the barrier.

Work and Pensions chief to retire at 61 with £1.8m pot having INCREASED retirement to 67

A CIVIL servant has committed the ultimate act of hypocrisy after announcing his retirement at the age of 61 after increasing the minimum age to 67, MP’s revealed.
Sir Robert Devereux will reportedly enjoy a £1.8million pension pot when he calls time on his career - giving him an immediate lump sum of £245,000 with a further £85,000 following every year, a hefty amount that trounces the average UK national salary.

Former pension minister Ros Altmann said: “I do hope that he goes on to do some other work because I’m sure that a lot of people aged 61 are pretty fit and healthy.
“If only everyone could dream of the kind of pension he has guaranteed by the taxpayer. I hope everyone in the public sector feels appreciative of this.”    Cont.    https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/865327/Pension-Civil-service-Labour-Robert-Devereux-transport-UK-national-salary (https://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/865327/Pension-Civil-service-Labour-Robert-Devereux-transport-UK-national-salary)

I'd like to give a special award this week to an unknown man and woman who we saw on Tuesday as we were driving down to Machynlleth.

We were driving down the main road when we heard a siren and blue lights flashing some distance behind us.   The traffic was very light and Tellytubby  indicated and stopped on the roadside so that the speeding Police car could continue on their emergency call out.
Across the road about 40 yards away we saw a man and woman who were wanting to cross the road.
They looked at us and then looked behind our car in the direction of where the Police car was coming from and then decided to walk across the road, very very slowly at first, then a little bit quicker, then fast enough to get away without being hit by the speeding Police car
The Police car missed the pair by about 6 feet and at that speed the pair would have been fatally injured.

No blame or fault whatsoever on the Police but what we saw was unbelievable,  the idiots are alive and walking amongst us.    After the Police car went past we let the couple know how we felt about their stupidity.        An award for the most stupid couple of the week is well deserved

An award goes to Madeline Goumas, University of Exeter, who seems to have found a way to stop Herring gulls nicking chips and ice cream

"When they were being watched, only 26 per cent of the gulls touched the chips. Those that did touch the food took around 20 seconds longer to do so when they were being watched. This shows that seagulls are sensitive to the human gaze and change their behaviour when they are being watched. “Even though gulls seem like they do this a lot in some areas, it seems to be a few individuals that are responsible for the majority of food snatching,” says Goumas.

So that's the solution: stare at the gull and dare it to pinch your chips.  Courageous experimenters please post results in here  $hands$

By coincidence, while cleaning the car of gull mess for the third time that day, and being watched by the culprit on my roof, I was temped to point the hose at him, but instead I gave it a "nasty look" and noticed that it became uncomfortable with me staring, so I continued, it rose to it's feet, then shortly departed, sounds foolish, but maybe she has something, if you see a lot of coastal residents with a  $angry$ look on their face, and staring at their roof...................

I liked this story, nice to read something positive for a change.............

Demand for a uniform exchange scheme, to help parents get kids kitted out for school for as little as a fiver has been "crazy".
Stayce Weeder, who lives in Llannerch-y-Medd, Anglesey launched her own school uniform bank to help out other parents like her back in June.

The exchange scheme, which promised to be cost effective and environmentally friendly, allowed parents to donate clean, reusable primary or secondary school uniforms. Other parents could then choose and buy clothes for a small contribution.

All the money that was donated to the scheme was then given to a chosen local charity, which was Giddo's Gift- a charity that provides gifts or financial grants to teenagers or young adults that are living in North Wales and are battling with cancer.

But  a young man who was sitting behind Mr Bellis learnt of his predicament, and after Mr Bellis got off the bus, he also jumped off and told the former water board worker: "I'm not letting you go like this, I'll help you out."

I hope that they are also able to find the driver of the bus too

I would also like to suggest Dave for an award of the week because of the way he tackled the fly tipper in Glanwydden Lane          $good$

It would have been so easy to turn a blind eye to the situation and just drive past but not Dave who deserves credit for stopping and doing what he did which hopefully will educate the individual for the future

I read about this incident in August, and it looks like they could be prosecuted, as they should be...........
The video is shocking, no sense whatsoever.

A police investigation has been launched after jet skiers were seen riding 'aggressively' towards kayaker's and paddle boarders.

North Wales Police officers breathalysed and drug swiped the jet ski users following the incident which happened just off Criccieth beach on August 26.
Shocking footage emerged on social media of the moment three jet skis surrounded John Cowtan and his 16-year-old nephew James as they kayaked in Gwynedd on the Bank Holiday Monday.

The video taken by an onlooker shows that one rider returns time and time again to splash the kayakers, even as they try to move away.    (the use of the word splash is an understatement )

Video and article ....  https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/investigation-launched-aggressive-jet-skiers-16863152 (https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/investigation-launched-aggressive-jet-skiers-16863152)

And while we are on irresponsible actions, how about the idiot in a seaplane, practicing landings/take offs on Llyn Geirionydd, with visitors around.

A  team of swimmers have become the first people ever to swim around Llandudno's Great Orme .

After four months training for the big day, which involved four to five sessions a week, the swimmers started off from Llandudno Promenade in front of crowds of well-wishers before finally completing the gruelling challenge two and a half hours later at Westshore Beach.

Their efforts have raised close to £15,000 for charity, which has been equally distributed between Breast Cancer Now, Prostate Cancer UK and the Lions club whose volunteers helped out on the day with collection buckets.

I am a bit confused, but I think this is a separate Great Orme Swim, to the one above.

TWO brothers braved freezing waters without wetsuits to raise money in memory of their 'superhero' sibling.

John Burke, 37, and Tom Burke, 38, carried out a swim around the Great Orme in Llandudno earlier this month and raised an impressive £4,000 for St David's Hospice.    cont.  https://www.northwalespioneer.co.uk/news/17901077.brothers-complete-great-orme-swim-raise-thousands-charity-memory-sibling/ (https://www.northwalespioneer.co.uk/news/17901077.brothers-complete-great-orme-swim-raise-thousands-charity-memory-sibling/)

The incredible moment a stadium full of Japanese fans sang the Welsh national anthem has been praised by rugby fans.

Wales rugby team have received a remarkable welcome by the city of Kitakyushu
Around 15,000 local fans queued to get into the Mikuni Stadium and witness the team training, which officials later confirmed was the largest audience in the stadium's three-year history.

The support of residents took an even more heartwarming turn when, moments before the session began, the crowd of thousands began singing the Welsh national anthem.

Reading this article has me fuming, it is an utter disgrace, and I suspect their petty actions will seriously knock his confidence for some time, these days they should be grateful for someone who looks forward to going to school, I repeat an utter disgrace.

The furious parents of a 12-year-old boy say their son has been told to stay away from school until his hair grows back.

Cody Holbrook's mum and dad say they were told he would otherwise have to be put in isolation away from his friends.

The trouble started when he had his hair cut on Thursday last week. His mum Mandi said nothing had been said to him about it the next day when he went in to his school, Ysgol Friars in Bangor .

But on Tuesday this week the Year 7 pupil, who has learning difficulties, was apparently told it was his hair wasn't acceptable because it was shaved shorter on one side than the other.                         ref DP

There are so many reasons why schools behave as they do about uniform and presentation. For starters, it's about control. Put kids in a uniform, create hard and fast rules around the wearing of that uniform and the school is half way to taking control of the child in terms of their behaviour.

The other reason is fear; schools are in a competitive situation. They become obsessed with the reputation their school has and know that a part of that is determined with how smart the child looks out of school.

None of this, of course, has anything whatsoever to do with how well the child is educated. But there's a wealth of evidence that suggests a good education for children is really the last thing on most schools' minds.

To return to uniform and hairstyle the head teachers in schools need to realise that hairstyle has nothing to do with how a child learns. A child likes a particular hairstyle, often because their pals have it, often because someone on the TV has it. And there's nothing wrong with that. After all, most headteachers don't buy clothes because they like them: they buy clothes to wear in school because of the effect they will have on the staff and pupils. So why a child shouldn't be able to do the same is an interesting question.

I don't believe school uniform has a single positive advantage for a child; there might be some marginal effect in terms of the school, but none for the child. Same goes for hairstyles. School heads need to ask themselves what would be the effect if children were allowed to wear what they wanted?  Or to have their hair in any way they wanted? Where is the evidence that it would harm learning?  They'll have a job finding any - because it doesn't exist.

Of course children should arrive at school clean. That's a matter of good health and socialisation. A child that's dirty or smells will have a very bad time at school because kids tend to round on the child who's 'different'. But uniform really has no place in school. And the school has no right to dictate what hairstyles are acceptable. Of course, popular schools do, because they know how desperate parents are to get their kids in. But the whole British attitude towards schooling is worrying.

This case, however, involved Ysgol Friars, and that school and its head teacher Neil Foden (https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/biology-teacher-awarded-8000-compensation-14867550) - have something of a chequered history.  In 2018 the school had paid a biology teacher £8000 compensation for being "handed a “patently unjustified” and “outrageous” suspension by his headmaster. "The Daily post said "Ysgol Friars head Neil Foden and his senior colleagues were provoked by the “antagonistic approach” of the teacher Simon Wilson but they responded in a “petty and vindictive” manner, an employment tribunal heard.

The judgement comes days after another tribunal, taken by teacher Elandre Snyman, described the Ysgol Friars boss as “autocratic” after he wrote a reference for Elandre Snyman and included that he’d been investigated for malpractice - but didn’t add that he’d been cleared."

The independent tribunal who reviewed the case ruled “We expected schoolteachers to lead by example. We doubted whether any of the central characters would endure such petulant behaviour from pupils so we were truly astonished, and concerned, that things got so far out of control. We expected far better behaviour from teachers."

Sadly, many school senior management staff see themselves as god-like creatures and can become very petty in their dealings with staff.  It's a major issue with the way many teachers go straight from school into University and then into teaching, without ever having worked in a non-educational environment.

I don't believe school uniform has a single positive advantage for a child;

Surely it stops some kids from being bullied for not having the latest Nike or Adidas trainers when all their parents can afford is a pair of £4-99 plimsolls from the bargain basket at Poundstretchers? If they are not being bullied they are in a better position to be educated.
Title: Re: Special Award of the Week

That was the argument for enforcing school uniform since WWII, but there's no evidence it achieves that. Partly, that's because bullies will always bully and if it's not about clothing it will be about personality, physical size and so on. But there's been a lot of research in countries that don't impose uniform at all in schools, and they seem to have higher achievement standards than the countries that insist on uniform, at least in the West.

So the imposition of uniform isn't based on evidence; it's simply based on opinion.

I wonder what hairstyles are accepted by that school ... to be honest, that lad looks extremely smart.

I disagree about the comment "it's not about uniforms ...
I speak from personal experience ,albeit many years ago.
I attended a prep school in the 60s as a day boy and had to wear short trousers a blazer and cap when out of bounds. Can you imagine the ridicule the humiliation levelled at a 13 year old  whilst having to wait for a bus outside the Local secondary modern. Uniforms can lead to the worst levels of bullying by ritual humiliation.

I don't know about "Special measures" but definitely special award for the (                    ) who came up with this ...........

Pill bottles filled with sweets were handed out to school children at a science fair - sparking concern from parents.
Ysgol Llandrillo-yn-Rhos pupils were given the bottles filled with Skittles at an NHS educational stand at Venue Cymru's Big Bang event in Llandudno yesterday.

Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) said they were being distributed as part of "a demonstration on how medicines are counted and dispensed in pharmacies."

The pill bottles have now been taken away from the event stand and BCUHB has apologised for the "error of judgement".
They added that they have since "reviewed" their approach and assured parents "this will not happen again."

THE 1st Conwy Scouts group has been able to move into its new headquarters thanks to help of the community.

In 2012 the scout hut was destroyed in an arson attack, and since then the group has met at St Johns Methodist Church in Conwy.

Ray Castle, the Group Scout Leader, said: “Earlier this year we were given two accommodation units by Betsi Cadwalader NHS Trust which we have located in our grounds as a temporary base. The provision of mains services to the units has been a difficult and expensive process but with the help of parents and local businesses in our local community we are ready to start using them.”

Ray added: “The final hurdle was a big one. We needed to connect the mains electric supply to the units. This was going to be very expensive as we needed an electrical contractor competent to deal with our specific requirements, our site is adjacent to the river and in winter the site floods -sometimes to a depth of two feet. Quotations were being sought when a chance encounter by one of our scout leaders with the parent of a boy who had been a member of our cubs some years ago, led to an amazing offer.

“The parent was Paul McBreeze who is a director of GAP Electrical a local contractor. He offered to do our electrical works for the cost of the parts with no charge for labour on the basis that it was his company's contribution to the local community. We then thought about Pauls offer for at least five seconds and gladly accepted. The electrical connections have now been finalised and we have light and heat. To our amazement Paul has now advised us a lot of the fittings he used were in stock and he would not be sending us a bill. We’ve had a little handover ceremony and a few of our young Beavers and Cubs met the engineers to thank them for their generosity.”   ref Pioneer

The award for a great idea..............

Visiting Santa's grotto is a tradition and a magical moment for children and parents alike.
Kids get to tell Santa everything on their wish lists before heading home with a special gift from the man himself.

But a grotto has decided to do something different this Christmas, teaming up with the Trussell Trust to give families the chance to help someone in need.
Erddig , the National Trust property in Wrexham, is running a "reverse grotto" every Saturday and Sunday from November 30 until December 22, as part of its annual festivities.

Those who want to visit are asked to bring Santa a donation for a local food bank.
The idea is that children can "enjoy the gift of giving" while they help families who are struggling.

Kids will still get a candy cane from Santa, so they won't be leaving empty-handed.                                            Ref DP

A three-year-old boy whose father suffered a seizure took to a main road on his toy truck to raise the alarm.

Stefan Snowden, from Twenty, Lincolnshire, covered a quarter of a mile on his Paw Patrol truck after his father, Marc, fell ill at home.
He was then spotted by two women on the A151 main road as passing traffic beeped and drove round the youngster.

Stefan later told police his "daddy was poorly".
His mother, Carla Neve, 25, said Stefan had set off from the family's home after Mr Snowden, 28, suffered a seizure on the sofa at home.
"He loses consciousness when he has a seizure," she said, as she praised her son for his bravery.
"Stefan knows how to get out of the front door and must have gone to get his truck," the couple said.

He was spotted riding his toy truck along the busy A151 linking Spalding and Bourne
Insp Rachel Blackwell, from Lincolnshire Police, also praised the women who stepped in to help, one of whom rushed to stop the traffic after she spotted Stefan on the busy main road linking Spalding and Bourne.
"Without her speedy actions the child could have been seriously injured or worse," she said.

Another woman took the youngster into her home and kept him entertained until police arrived.
Insp Blackwell added Mr Snowden was now "doing fine" and the family were "so thankful to these two amazing people" who helped their son.        ref BBC

First mention this year..... A small article in the Pioneer drew my attention to a small grant given to local children's groups, funded by Tesco's "Bags for Help", We encourage our customers to bring their own reusable bags to Tesco and in August 2017 we replaced single use carrier bags with new Bags for Life made from 94% recyclable plastic, to help reduce bag use. Customers can have their Bag for Life replaced for free if broken or damaged, in store.
The money raised from the sale of the reusable Bag for Life is used to fund local projects across Britain.

Bags of Help has awarded over £80 million in grants to over 27,000 community projects since launching in October 2015. To make sure the money goes to causes that matter, we work with a charity called Groundwork.

I had not heard of this scheme, but as it is a Win Win situation, I thought deserves a mention.

On Thursday a helicopter flew very low over the house, I checked on Plane Finder, it was the Air Ambulance, I followed its course up Mostyn St. , but never found out what was happening, but this morning we have the story..........these defibrillator are a god send.

The tearoom heroes who helped man collapsed in Llandudno street
he man was taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd after incident in Mostyn Street

Three members of the catering team at Habit Tearooms sprang into action grabbing a defibrillator to help the gentleman, believed to be in his 70s, on Mostyn Street after he took ill at around 5pm on Thursday.

Two doctors from a nearby surgery also assisted while other members of the public carried out CPR.

Staff members from the Habit Tearooms on Mostyn Street in Llandudno rushed to help an elderly man who collapsed on Thursday February 27.

Helen Mckenzie, who has worked at the establishment for two years, said: "A lady ran in and asked if we had a defibrillator because apparently the ambulance service know where they are located.

"One of our chefs, Gernot, started shouting 'Helen, Helen quick' and I thought he was just joking to begin with but sprang in to action when I realised he was being serious.

"We didn't see what actually happened but apparently the man had just collapsed and was lying on the floor by the zebra crossing.
"It wasn't just us, there were other people around giving CPR and two doctors from the nearby surgery had rushed over too.

Wales Ambulance Service were also called and sent one emergency ambulance, one rapid response vehicle and Wales Air Ambulance to the scene and the man was taken to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd by road ambulance.

Chef Gernot Sieker, who has worked at Habit Tearooms for a year, received first aid training in to how to use a defibrillator just three months ago.
He said: "I received first aid training a few months ago and thankfully they showed us how to do the defibrillator on a dummy.

The above story had a happy ending, and the good fortune of the gentleman involved, is quite remarkable, the number of people involved who knew what to do, and who acted in life saving procedures is fantastic, and they should feel very proud, and I hope they are around if I need them.

This thread will hopefully get busy at this uncertain time..........

Philanthropist and businessman Steve Morgan is pledging £1m a week to charities to help some of the most vulnerable sectors of society cope with coronavirus – and he’s called on others to follow suit.

Mr Morgan, who was brought up in Colwyn Bay, founded Deeside housebuilder Redrow and is the former owner of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

He set-up the Steve Morgan Foundation in 2001, to support charities that help children and families, people with physical or learning disabilities, the elderly, or those that are socially disadvantaged in Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales

Charities in Merseyside, Cheshire and North Wales looking for emergency funding should email  contact@stevemorganfoundation.org.uk  in the first instance. To check the criteria go to  https://stevemorganfoundation.org.uk (https://stevemorganfoundation.org.uk)

I'm not a fan of Gary Neville but only because he has been rude about my team LFC      ;D

But I would like to nominate him and Ryan Giggs for what they have done in Manchester.     They jointly own two hotels in Manchester but they have closed both of them down and set them up for NHS staff who can use them and stay there rent free during this pandemic.
I thought that it was a wonderful gesture on both their parts and that they fully deserved a mention.     Well done Gary & Ryan    $good$

Situations like the present day Coronavirus pandemic can bring out the worst in people like the idiots we saw this weekend going up Snowdon.      They and other like minded selfish people may have brought forward a compulsory lock down in the UK

It can however bring out the best in people and we saw that in our road yesterday and I would therefore like to nominate my neighbours Mick and Lona Gavins  for a special award of the week

They had leaflets printed out and the leaflets were distributed to every household in the street offering help to anyone with their shopping and a host of other things too.

We're all having to stay at home ... ideal time for a good clear out - just finished my office area - never been so neat in years - garage could be next.  Problem is I have boxes of stuff for disposal.  Much of it is paperwork and suchlike, stuff that will burn.

Cannot go to the recycling, closed anyway - bin lorries may or may not come ... I have one of those cheap metal bin incinerators.

The very same thing happened here last Sunday. At about 3.30 I went to make a cuppa & opened the door to Mr M's bolt hole, where we have the desk top computer & I had been for an hour, to find the hallway full of smoke. Mr M was fast asleep in the lounge again with the door shut. I had left most of the windows open at the back of the house so of course it had filled the bungalow. I  know who it is, as he did it a few times last summer & if he does it again I shall make a complaint. I have spoken to someone who works for CCBC & they said there has been a large number of complaints regarding bonfires over the past 6 weeks. I'm dreading next winter as all the large houses on the new Beech development behind my bungalow have wood burners. Why they allow builders to install woodburners in this day & age is beyond me, the laughable thing is they boast about installing solar panel & being green to help the environment at the same time. It's about time CCBC banned bonfires in urban areas before this gets out of hand.

Hugo, again a perfect solution,..... and DVT thanks for your consideration, ....I have been thinking that, I have had fires inside and outside in the past, but on reflection, not in built up areas,  it is the smoldering fires that cause the smoke, wrong materials and not enough heat, ....and Meleri I have been caught out like you mentioned, another one is the person who thinks it will be OK if he lights his fire, before going to bed on a nice summers night, and your upstairs windows are open for fresh air.

Owners of wood burners, stoves and open fires will no longer be able to buy coal or wet wood to burn in them, under a ban to be rolled out from next year.
Sales of the two most polluting fuels will be phased out in England to help cut air pollution, the government says.

Bags of logs sold in DIY stores, garden centres and petrol stations often contain wet wood - a type of wood which produces more pollution and smoke.
The public should move to "cleaner alternatives", the government says.

Plans for the ban were first announced 18 months ago, but the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has now confirmed it is going ahead.

The government said wood burning stoves and coal fires are the largest source of PM2.5, small particles of air pollution which find their way into the body's lungs and blood.

Some of you will know Dr Green, from CYD medical practice, a keen but unlikely looking marathon runner, this is his piece from the RNLI
FB site, a deservedly "well done"

" As many may know, yesterday I should have been running the London Marathon, which of course has been postponed until 4th October. This postponement will result in a loss of £60 million to charities including the RNLI. The London Marathon team asked that as many people as possible, especially the would be runners, should do something involving the numbers 2 and 6, given that the London Marathon is the classic distance of 26.2 miles and was due to be run yesterday on 26th April. I decided for my ‪#twopointsixchallenge‬, I would run a metric marathon, that is 26.2 kilometres. This is about 16.5 miles. I did this around Llandudno. It was more of a challenge that I thought, as I had not run any distance in double figures since we learned of the postponement of the London Marathon. I wore a surgical mask because it is known that slipstream can trail a runner for 10 metres. Anyway anyone wishing to support yesterday's run:please go to virginmoneygiving.com/jjgreen

Conwy businesses to support Llandudno's St David's Hospice through pandemic.

A TRIO of volunteers have marshalled more than 60 Conwy businesses to help fill the shortfall in vital hospice funding.

Despite the "uncertain times", 69 businesses from across the county have donated prizes for the Rainbow Raffle in aid of St David's Hospice - which is projected to lose large amounts of funding as its regular income streams are squeezed by the pandemic.

The fundraiser - which has already smashed it's original £1,000 target by more than £2,400 - is set to be drawn on Friday, May 8 and is the brainchild of Glan Clwyd Hospital and Ysbyty Gwynedd pharmacy technician Alyssa Smee, former hospice employee Daisy Magill and teacher Zoe Hother.

A very well deserved award, and your warning on inflatables is important on two levels, obviously the danger of being swept away, by winds or currents, as has been reported on numerous occasions recently all around the UK coast, the second point is, when an inflatable is blown off the beach and into the sea, it ends up being reported, then both the Coastguard and RNLI have to investigate on the assumption there is a person involved, sometimes taking hours.

Some of the Webb search results..........

Rescue of twin sisters from inflatable brings number to 100 ...RNLI news

Every summer we see the same warnings. Inflatables without intelligent adult supervision are extremely dangerous, and every year people end up having to be rescued. Some people really do come from the shallow end of the gene pool.

I didn't want to make a comment when I made the posting as I thought that people could make their own opinion on the matter but you have summoned it up perfectly Ian
In less than a month we have heard of two incidents involving 6 year old children who have had their lives saved by the efforts of brave strangers who happened to be in the right place at the right time.
Talking about inflatable boats etc made me remember an incident on the beach in Llandudno many years ago,     I was sunbathing on the beach and there was a little girl in an inflatable boat about 12 feet away from the shore, but her father had a line attached to the boat and he was holding the other end of it.       Not once did he take his eyes off his child and after a while pulled the boat back in to the shore so they were both happy and for different reasons
I've also seen other adults who have taken their eyes off their children playing and then I've helped them in their frantic search for the children.
It's neglect, there is no other word for it.

A big well done to everyone......A couple of rescue stories, two methods involved, both good outcomes, but one nearly was not,

Teacher who rescued girl swept out to sea relives the terrifying ordeal - and says it's a 'miracle' he's still here
Leroy Holcroft said he was 'overwhelmed' by the power of the sea as he tried to reach the girl.

"He said: "I am a capable swimmer. I consider myself to be fit, but to cover that distance in an emergency quickly and against the current was absolutely terrifying.

"I understand the power of the sea but to actually feel it was terrifying. I was quite overwhelmed by it. It felt like swimming through lead. I was trying and not moving.
"It was pulling my legs. I was pulled under at one point. I swallowed an awful lot of seawater. I really did question if I would reach her and, by the time I did, my arms and legs weren’t working too well."

Beachgoers formed a human chain to help rescue a stricken swimmer off the Dorset coast.
Lulworth coastguard said the individual got into trouble in choppy seas off Durdle Door beach on Thursday afternoon.

More than 20 people linked arms to enter the sea and successfully bring them back to shore.

The coastguard said the swimmer was unhurt but warned against going in the sea in windy conditions.

A military dog who charged through enemy gunfire to save the lives of British soldiers fighting al-Qaeda in Afghanistan is to be awarded the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross.

During a raid, the Belgian Malinois named Kuno tackled a gunman and was hit by bullets in both back legs.

After losing one of his paws as a result, he became the first UK military dog to get custom-made prosthetics.

The four-year-old will receive the Dickin Medal from vet charity the PDSA.

Now retired and rehomed, Kuno - who was trained to detect explosives, weapons and incapacitate enemies - will be awarded the medal for valour at a virtual ceremony in November.

"The forces, pinned down by grenade and machine-gun fire from an insurgent, were unable to advance.
Kuno was sent in to break the deadlock. Without hesitation, he charged through a hail of bullets while wearing night vision goggles to tackle the gunman, wrestling him to the ground and halting his attack."

A KIND-hearted group of stitchers have donated £765 to the Wales Air Ambulance.

During the early stages of the pandemic, a group of North Wales stitchers set up a voluntary team ‘For the Love of Scrubs’, which made free personal protection garments for desperate NHS staff in hospitals, surgeries and nursing homes across North Wales.

The group, made up of more than 200 stitchers, produced garments free of charge but set up a Go Fund Me appeal to purchase quality material to create all items required.

Moron of the week award.............

The Welsh Ambulance Service Trust has issued a statement following the theft of one its vehicles while on a call in the Shotton area of Flintshire last night (Saturday, November 14).

The vehicle was stolen whilst the crew were treating a patient at their home address.

The Trust were able to dispatch another vehicle without delay to assist the crew and North Wales Police immediately alerted their own teams who later found the ambulance abandoned.

The North Wales Police Interceptors team responded and located the vehicle damaged on Dee View, Shotton.

“The theft of an emergency ambulance is an extremely irresponsible act placing patients and the public at risk.
"Had the crew needed to access additional emergency equipment from the vehicle, or to urgently convey the patient to hospital, this act could have led to very serious harm."

A SIX year old superhero schoolgirl stayed cool and raced to get help when her mum collapsed with a heart condition.

Bea Dean-Lewis’ bravery was recognised with a virtual assembly at Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn, Colwyn Bay, where she is a pupil.
A spokeswoman for the school said during the recent half term holiday Bea showed extreme bravery in challenging circumstances.
She said: “Her mum collapsed due to a heart problem. Bea acted promptly and beyond her years.

“She called 999 from the landline to get her mum medical help that was vitally needed.

“Before using the landline Bea had the foresight to lift up her mums hand to place her thumb on her mobile to unlock it.

“After she could not find the contacts on the phone she resorted to the landline and called 999.

Meet the people giving up their Christmas Day to look after us during the coronavirus pandemic
Staff and volunteers will continue their tireless work and dedication over the festivities - just like they do every day          $salute$   $salute$    $salute$

Christmas isn't going to be the same for anyone this year but, for emergency workers, crisis volunteers, cleaners, carers and cooks, it's almost business as usual.

While many of us will be tucking into our Christmas dinners or relaxing in front of the television on December 25, there will be many people giving up the festivities to save lives or help bring new ones into the world.

Staff across the region's hospitals and care homes will swap presents for poorly patients as they prepare themselves for any scenario while juggling the pressures brought by the coronavirus pandemic.

Clap for Carers is set to return on Thursday night as the nation heads into a third national lockdown.

Annemarie Plas, the woman behind the Clap for Our Carers initiative has confirmed it will return at 8pm this Thursday.

Although rather than just focusing on carers the message will be widened to Clap for Heroes to acknowledge everyone who has played their part through the pandemic, not just health workers.

In March last year, people across the UK would stand on their doorsteps every Thursday evening to clap for carers.

Now Ms Plas has called for a return, she posted on social media hoping for it to “lift the spirit”.
She said: “We are bringing back the 8pm applause, in our 3rd lockdown I hope it can lift the spirit, of all of us.

“Carers teacher, homeschooling parents, those who shield and ALL who is pushing through this difficult time! Please join & share! #clapforheroes”

I would like to nominate David Jones and all the Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue Team for the Special award of the week.   They like the RNLI are heroes in my eyes.
David Jones has been doing rescue work for many years at home and abroad and if my memory serves me right he went to El Salvatore with his dog Meg to search for survivors of the earthquake there many years ago.
A local experienced walker on Friday  walked with his dog from his home in Dwygyfylchi up on to the Carneddau and while they were there they were caught up in a snowstorm and the pair were separated.      Thankfully there is a happy ending to it all thanks to the efforts of David Jones and the Mountain Rescue Team

Well done everyone that was involved in the rescue        &well&

Worth pointing out that the MR team members are entirely voluntary and are not paid, unlike the RNLI.

Not knowing the facts I've just copied this from Google
"Most of the members of its lifeboat crews are unpaid volunteers. ... It has 238 lifeboat stations and operates 444 lifeboats. RNLI Lifeguards operate on more than 200 beaches. The lifeguards are paid by local authorities, while the RNLI provides equipment and training.
Volunteers: 40,000"

They are all heroes whatever the facts are and I wouldn't fancy going out in all weathers whether that is on land or on the sea

Google is misinformed, I'm afraid.  From the RNLI site itself:

"Whilst our operational volunteers give their time freely to help save lives, the RNLI does make payments to recognise the cost and disruption that this can cause.

To ensure they are not out of pocket, these volunteers can claim necessary expenses and, in specific cases, a contribution for lost wages, such as when attending a residential training course.

The RNLI also, in certain circumstances, may make a fixed payment where there is a shortage of specific skills, such as maintaining and operating our increasingly technical lifeboats."

There's a great deal more about this and all members of the lifeboat crew are either fully salaried which may surprise many, or are provided as shown above.

I agree that their work is very worthy indeed, but examining the annual accounts for the RNLI can provide interesting reading.

Thanks very much for clarifying that point Ian,  but no amount of money would entice me to doing that work on the RNLI.       It takes a special type of person to want to do that type of thing.
They risk their lives every time they go out  on a call as do the Mountain Rescue teams.    I can't speak highly enough of both groups of rescuers for their efforts and dedication
As for David Jones, he's a legend in my eyes

A DIGITAL project funded through charitable donations is providing a lifeline to hospital patients during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Virtual contact has been a saviour for many throughout the pandemic, and nowhere has this been felt more than in healthcare settings across Wales where visiting has been restricted.

Funded through the Awyr Las Covid-19 Response Fund and Macmillan, more than 250 devices have been deployed by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB) since last March. These are now enabling older and vulnerable people to keep in touch with their loved ones whilst in hospital.

“We have an eye on the future and digital health, telehealth and those types of online services, will continue to become the norm in many situations post-Covid and beyond.

“For example, it’s likely that remote consultations with GPs or virtual visits to hospital outpatients clinics, will increasingly be offered as an available option."

As part of its commitment to the digital inclusion agenda, BCUHB is now working towards assigning the digital devices to specific patients, so they can be used to aid visiting in hospital, virtual clinics and remote consultations.

BCUHB are also hoping projects like this will help tackle digital exclusion across North Wales, particularly in the areas of Mental Health and Learning Disabilities.

Readers can donate to the Awyr Las Covid-19 Response Fund by visiting: www.awyrlas.org.uk/donate (http://www.awyrlas.org.uk/donate)

I posted this article on the NHS thread, which has a connection to the above..............

IN THE new Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board chief executive’s first in-depth interview since taking on the role, she revealed how some North Wales healthcare could be going “hi-tech”.

This time last year, Jo Whitehead was chief executive of Mackay Hospital and Health Service in North Queensland, Australia.

A POLICE officer from North Wales who helped save two lives in two days has been nominated for top honours.

PC Richard Shea, who works for the Armed Response Alliance jointly run by police in North Wales and Cheshire, has been nominated for an official commendation from North Wales Police and a Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society award.

PC Shea is trained in advanced trauma care as part of his role, and he and his fellow members of the armed response team always carry a high level medical kit.

The first life saving incident he was involved with happened when he and his partner, PC Damien Boyle, responded to a medical emergency on the eastbound carriageway of the A55 near Broughton.

'Scumbag' thieves caught on camera stealing eggs and pocket money from Anglesey youngsters
Farmer Gwion Jones only set up the camera two weeks ago after a previous raid on his daughter's egg enterprise

They also made off with an honesty box installed by eight-year-old Eleri Jones and her little sister Megan, aged four, so they could earn some pocket money.

The enterprising sisters began selling eggs from their 30-hen flock set up by parents Gwion and Mannon.

Having been targeted just two weeks ago, when thieves made off with four dozen eggs, Gwion bought a security camera and fixed it up at the head of the farm drive.

SELFLESS heroes who give up their time in the community are trying their hardest to help an overstretched ambulance service.

Now more than ever, Community First Responders are providing vital support across North Wales as the Welsh Ambulance Service and NHS Wales are facing demands never seen before.

When a person becomes seriously ill, every second counts and the role of a community first responder can make a vital difference.

Community First Responders are volunteers who give up their spare time to attend 999 calls and provide emergency care to people in their community.

When a 999 call is made, First Responders are sent to provide essential care until the vehicle reaches the scene. But lately, these volunteers are finding themselves on the scene for a while whilst they wait for an ambulance vehicle due to increasing demands.

St David’s Hospice recently picked up the Resilience and Innovation award for their Great Orme Goat fundraising initiative.

The local palliative care charity were announced as the proud winners of the Go North Wales Tourism award for resilience and innovation at a recent presentation ceremony.

In April 2020, following the global coverage of the Great Orme goats taking over the deserted streets of Llandudno in Lockdown, the St David's Hospice Income Generation Team created a bespoke t-shirt design featuring the Great Orme Goats.

Due to COVID-19, fundraising events were cancelled and retail shops closed. Sold on the Hospice’s website, the t-shirts were a bid to help replace significant funds that were lost.

Twenty months later, selling over 9,000 t-shirts worldwide, the goat themed merchandise has raised over £300,000 and continues to raise funds for the Hospice in these difficult and challenging times

The group have been a driving force in caring for Welsh communities and protecting biodiversity throughout that time

The group are known for their work across the country, especially North Wales where they've been involved with a wide range of projects over the years, especially in the last few where litter has seen a significant rise thanks to a surge in staycations brought on by Covid. The group have grown and changed many times over the years, but their central goal has always remained the same.

Thousands of retired NHS workers answered an urgent call by the government to go back to work as the Covid-19 pandemic threatened to overwhelm hospitals. Two years on, many of them are still there. The BBC spoke to some about their unwavering need to help.

Elaine Millership, 62, was looking for a slower pace of life to spend more time with her grandchildren and elderly parents after decades as a community staff nurse.

But as the pandemic began to spread across the world, she was "absolutely horrified" to watch it unfold on television.

"I couldn't sit at home watching that, knowing I had all these skills," she said.

"I really felt like 'I can do this. Let me have it.'"

Mrs Millership is one of about 10,000 former workers who signed up to help and are continuing to work in the NHS as the country prepares for another surge of Covid cases this winter.

Its the small things that make a big difference ......

Trainee nurse at English hospital wrote down Welsh phrases to help comfort sick child
She wrote down the phrases so colleagues could comfort him in his native language

A trainee nurse wrote down Welsh phrases and left them at the bedside of a two-year-old boy battling cancer so colleagues could comfort him in his native language. Morgan Ridler, from Swansea, was awaiting surgery at Birmingham Children's Hospital to remove a tumour in his abdomen, when a student medic overheard his mum Natalie speaking to the toddler in Welsh.

The nurse decided to write a number of reassuring phrases in Welsh - including 'You're okay' and 'You're safe', written phonetically to aid pronunciation, reports WalesOnline. It was so whoever was on the ward could help him feel less scared when his family weren't around

It wasn't until a year later, when relatives requested copies of Morgan's medical notes, that the kind act was finally discovered. "I was skimming through the notes and one stood out from the rest because of the handwriting," said mum Natalie, 32.

"That?s when I found she had put in this entry of some Welsh phrases to comfort Morgan when he was distressed. She was a student nurse on the intensive care unit and she heard me speak Welsh to him when he was upset and took it upon herself to do this for him.

Recognising a snippet of Morse code made all the difference when an Asda delivery driver went above and beyond her duty. Sam Speechley, from the Queensferry branch, sprang into action when she heard someone in distress tap out what sounded like SOS on their car horn.

When she went to investigate she found 90-year-old Keith Turner who'd slipped on the driveway of his Flintshire home and had broken his hip. He had managed to drag himself to the car so he could sound the alarm.

Widower Keith, who's now back home after spending three weeks in hospital, said: "Sam saved my life, she really did, and I can't thank her enough. I'd been laying there in the rain and cold for half an hour and if she hadn't come along when she did I don't think I'd have made it. She's a Godsend.

A CELEBRATORY event to mark the achievements of more than 100 healthcare support workers from Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board at Venue Cymru recently.

The event was held to mark the academic achievements of 111 healthcare support workers who had been students at Coleg Llandrillo.

Presenting to the students were the health board?s Chief Executive Officer Jo Whitehead and Executive Director Nursing and Midwifery Angela Wood.

The healthcare support workers gained the Level 4 Certificate in Higher Education in Healthcare Practice following secondment to Coleg Llandrillo for one day per week, over one year, by their healthcare employer.

The celebration event was the first event in three years (since November 2019) due to the Covid pandemic. All successful graduates studied during the pandemic whilst working as key workers in healthcare settings, making their achievements even more remarkable.

The programme develops higher-level knowledge and skills which enable the healthcare support workers to apply for increasing numbers of roles that extend their responsibilities, and it also means that the healthcare support workers can carry out higher-level duties within their post, therefore meeting the workforce needs of the health board. The intensive course involves both academic assessment at college and assessment within the workplace, the latter by clinically qualified NHS staff.

I think this is a great idea, allowing families to be together at Xmas...... What do you think ?

Welsh gran charges family up to ?15 each for Christmas dinner including the grandkids
'When people read it, and not just look at the headline, they?ll actually think ?hmm, yes, that?s actually not a bad idea'

A grandmother from Wales has revealed that she charges her family for Christmas dinner every year - and says it helps her avoid waste and cover the rising costs of preparing the meal. Caroline Duddridge, 63, from Cardiff, will be hosting up to 12 people for Christmas dinner this year.

She'll also be putting on a buffet on Christmas Eve, and another on Boxing Day. So, she said, charging a fee is a sensible solution. "I've got to be clear," she told WalesOnline, "I'm not out to make a profit. It's a contribution; I'm not getting one up on my children.

"It sounds, on the face of it, like 'oh my god, how could she do that?' But it started when my husband died just before Christmas 2015. My income was halved and I lost my job, so I said to my kids that they'd have to contribute to all the food."

Among the famous faces on the lists are comedian Frank Skinner, who is made an MBE for services to entertainment. He said he had not yet told his family because he thought it may have been "some sort of administrative error".

Frank Skinner becomes an MBE, while actor Stephen Graham gets an OBE
Merseyside-born This Is England actor Stephen Graham becomes an OBE for services to drama, while David Harewood receives an OBE for services to drama and charity.

Dame Mary Quant, 92 - the fashion designer widely credited with popularising the mini skirt in the 1960s - joins the elite Companions of Honour.

And Virginia McKenna, the 91-year-old actress and co-founder of the Born Free Foundation, is made a dame for services to wildlife conservation and to wild animal welfare.

I would like to nominate Sammie Hewitt for a Special award of the week for her refreshingly honest deed on Friday

My wife had a senior moment on Friday and when she arrived home from shopping she realised that she had left her handbag which contained her purse and other items in the trolley at Home Bargains.      She was very upset about it but then so relieved when she phoned the store and was told that the bag had been handed in
She then made a quick dash to the store and collected the handbag and wanted to thank the person who had been so honest and handed it in but unfortunately the person did not leave a name or contact number
However on the Saturday when I spoke to my walking buddy in Prestatyn  he was able to trace Sammie thanks to Social Media and Mrs H sent a letter of thanks to Sammie for being so honest
It restored our faith in human nature and if only everyone was as honest as her, then the world would be a better place for it

A well deserved award, glad all worked out to the good, Mrs H. lost her purse last year, the hassle of getting new cards etc, especially her new bank card, you said you had trouble paying for something recently, try using a new card with your old suppliers, security drove her mad, I know it was for her own good, but what a pain.

I'm really sorry to hear that Steve, it must have been so stressful for Mrs H and yourself.   All those thoughts went through my head in just a short time before we found out that my wife's handbag had been handed in.    Our appreciation foe Sammie's honesty is really appreciated and I wish everyone was like her.

If this works a great use of wool world wide, if not a special award.... certainly a  &well& for trying.

A NINE-YEAR-OLD football fan is set to take part in a sponsored walk to help raise money for a new pitch for Llandudno FC.

Hollie Jenkins, a pupil at Ysgol Craig y Don, will be joining a sponsored walk organised by Gareth Owen that will take place on Easter Sunday (April 9).

The group will be walking from the summit of the Little Orme to the summit of the Great Orme, and Hollie has already set up a JustGiving page to raise money.

The pitch at Llandudno FC has prevented the team from playing at their OPS Wind Arena home since September, after being designated a health and safety risk after inspection by the FAW and UEFA.

Beverley Lewis claimed the top prize in the Wales Air Ambulance Summer Raffle but, rather than keep her ?3,000 winnings, she donated it back to the charity whom she owes her life to. Beverley, who is from south west London, had been travelling to Criccieth, in Gwynedd, on holiday with her friends last September when she was involved in a road traffic collision in Bala.

The Wales Air Ambulance team arrived swiftly to the scene and provided advanced critical care that proved to be instrumental in stabilising Beverley before airlifting her to the major trauma centre at The Royal Stoke University Hospital, where she spent nine days and underwent surgery. The 65-year-old keep up to date with the Wales Air Ambulance following her accident and through email updates and learnt about the Summer Raffle which had a top prize of ?3,000.

Llandudno girl makes mum so proud after cleaning up litter in park                       ref pioneer

A YOUNG girl from Llandudno took it upon herself to clear all of the rubbish left in one of the towns parks earlier this week.
Pippa Greenwood, three, tidied up Freddys Park, near the Asda supermarket, after it was left full of litter.

She had wanted to play in the park after school, only to find it strewn with rubbish, before cleaning and sanitising hand afterwards.
Using a shopping trolley which had also been left at the park, Pippa and her dad, Stuart, cleaned the area up together.

Her mum, Tasha Griffiths, said: ?She?s done it quite often, and a couple of times before at that park.
Whenever we?re out walking and she sees any rubbish, she always picks it up and puts it in the closest bin.

She just likes to clean the place up. The trolley was left in the park as well ? it was full by the end! It took her a good 20 minutes.
Im so proud of her.

I'd like to nominate Kevin Sinfield for a Special award.

I was having my breakfast today in the warmth of my home when Kevin was on the news doing another ultra modern marathon in aid of MND       What a modest and incredible person and a true friend to Rob Burrows.   My wife and I both said "why hasn't he been knighted after all the effort he has made to raise funds for the terrible illness of MND
I was looking it up on Google and this  is the reason given:-
why isn t Kevin Sinfield knighted?
Former teammates of the star have backed calls for him to be knighted. But bureaucracy could block the move because former Leeds Rhinos loose forward Kevin, 42, was given an OBE last year. Rules mean he could have to wait another four years before receiving a higher accolade.

It's time that this outdated rule was changed to acknowledge  exceptional deeds such as Kevin has done.  He is not doing it for himself but for suffers of this awful condition.        It's so refreshing of Kevin and so  unlike a well known ex footballer who poses at every photo shoot and then has a tirade of four letter words when he didn't get the knighthood that he thought that he deserved

A TEA ROOMS in Llandudno has praised the ?heart-warming? support it has received after its poetry shelf was ?ransacked? in recent weeks.

The Habit, a popular caf? at 12 Mostyn Street, offers a poetry shelf for customers to browse and enjoy while they dine, having ?worked hard? to source several books spanning different ages and genres.

Despite the scheme being in place for around six months, and proving ?extremely popular? with customers, books have been stolen on a number of occasions, with five to six books taken twice.

The Habit said they were ?determined to restock and get the Poetry Shelf back up to its full inspirational strength?.

However, the business has received messages from all over the UK in support, with people offering to send books from as far as North Yorkshire.

A spokesperson for The Habit told the Pioneer: ?I have messages from a number of people offering to send books from their personal collection to fill the gaps on our shelf.

?And not all from North Wales either, some from as far away as North Yorkshire.
?It is really heart-warming.?

With a revived shelf, the business will not bear the burden of buying the expensive books on its own.

The business has a sign advising customers to return books after use, seemingly to no avail.

KIND individuals who have lost their jobs spent time volunteering at a now 'closed' vital centre so they could return scooters and equipment back to customers.

Staff have been left "broken hearted" for their vulnerable customers following the sudden closure of The Disability Resource Centre located in Glan Clwyd Hospital grounds.

Staff were made redundant from The Disability Resource Centre on Thursday, January 25. It is understood trustees came in to tell staff the centre was "now closed."

Some customers had been "left" without their mobility equipment; mobility scooters for customers were locked up in the workshop.

However, caring individuals came to volunteer at the site on Tuesday to help return items to customers.

"Volunteers were at the centre from 8.30am and stayed all day.

"Equipment including scooters etc for customers were released by administrators at 1pm. Some customers collected in person but kept waiting until 1pm.

"Some customers waited about three hours in the centre. We felt awful leaving disabled customers that long. We made them tea and coffee and they wanted to pay a ?1 or so for it and we said absolutely not. They were so nice."

Redundant staff are currently looking at ideas to reform the centre and are seeking sources of funding and are open to ideas.
