I'll kick off with one from the early 1970s:

1995, taken from the Clarence Hotel. The Palladium cinema is still open and it's a few years before this area is remodelled.

Good find Dave.
Looks like Apollo 13 was playing at the Palladium, the RNA club was still open, and Vollams was a thriving business.
-
RNA Club? thats where we've been tonight isn't it? ... Dave R, The Festers and Pendragon...... Mmm likes it in there....Burp ZXZ ZXZ ZXZ

The complete eyesore that was Mostyn Estates' attempt at redevelopment in the 1970s. The Victoria Centre now stands here.
[smg id=1070]
-
Not quite in Mostyn Street, this is the original Market Hall, built in 1857. It was demolished in 1919 and replaced by the Palladium Theatre & Cinema (now Wetherspoons pub):

Robins Cafe in the 1950s (now the site of Fifth Avenue Amusements):
[smg id=1071]
Robin Gubay did have an amusement arcade there himself (where Fifth Avenue is today) in the 60's,70's & early 80's. and the cafe was above.
I always remember the antiquated arcade machines (compared to the Royal & Goose) the Elton John posters on the walls, and the juke box belting out Showaddywaddy...."Hey Rock & Roll, we're into town lets go...."
There was also the Prize Bingo in the 70's with the Manc bingo caller...."It's on the blue, five and two....fifty two".
The Gubay's also owned the Oriental Stores on the other side of Bog Island.

Heavy snow in Llandudno around 1980. Fountains was the Horseshoe Grill back then!

This crop of a 1960s postcard show the Ford garage with petrol pumps outside that was situated where Listers is now in Upper Mostyn Street (now Listers). I can't remember what this garage was called?
-
I can't either. :'( I remember we talked about it in the old forum.
Dwyforite, Norman08, Bri, *Edit* Suepp....help!
-
It was Francis Garage ltd. in 1969

It was Francis Garage ltd. in 1969
Ah, thank you. Didn't they also used to be in Colwyn Bay as well? The one in the West End that was later Gordon Ford?
-
They were at 130 Conway Road, West End
The Llandudno entry has them at 108 and 114 Mostyn street
-
why does KELLYS come to mind?
-
I think it became Kellys after Francis
-
Kellys is the one I was thinking of. Here's an advert from 1958:
[smg id=1149]
-
Yes, Kelly's was the name I was thinking of too.
Cheers Dwyforite!
While we're on the name Kelly, who remembers "Kelly the Telly", who had a television & radio repair shop in one of Llandudno's back-streets?
I think it was Somerset Street.
-
Yes Kelly’s was in Somerset Street, opposite the Elsinore’s Garage. After Kelly’s it became a Tandy franchise but was put out of business when Tandy opened there own shop on Mostyn Street in direct competition. In the end the shop and attached building next door became uninhabitable and was pulled down. The site was acquired by Clinton Cards and they built an extension to there stock room with a façade that that retained the footprint of the original building
-
KELLYS was also in vardre lane,it was directly behind gimberts on mostyn street it was in one of the old cottages backing on to a promenade hotel,we are going quite away back, after retirement i think mr kelly went on to doing work like driving people to hospital and doctors on night duty.

46 years ago.... and STILL nowhere to park!
-
everyone was double parking, I remember it well!
-
Not a Traffic Warden in sight! :)
Nice line-up of cars there Merddyn. ^*^0
-
I remember Mr Kelly coming to our house to fix the tele. We had it on rental and everytime we had to call him out he would say "are you sure the kids havent been fiddling with the television", he always blamed us but we werent allowed near it anyway
-
Welcome to the Forum Mollie!
My Dad worked for the TV rental company, and our telly used to conk-out on Xmas eve every year.... and I always got the blame.
The telly would miraculousy work when the engineer arrived... and promptly go kaput again as soon as he drove away!
-
Yes welcome Mollie. Would this be Mollie from the old Llandudno Enthusiasts forum?
We had an Ultra B&W television. When ever we lost signal, the entire family would stamp on the living room carpet with one foot, thinking the vibration would make the TV surge back to life.
We then progressed to a colour Radio Rentals telly from the shop near the library in Mostyn Street.
-
Upper Mostyn Street in the 1850s, maybe? There is a Market Garden, owned by Mr W. G. Roberts, on the left hand side where Hoosons Corner is,.
-
It could be a little later.... I don't think the Empire was extended up to a 3 or 4 story level until the 1880's....
-
It could be a little later.... I don't think the Empire was extended up to a 3 or 4 story level until the 1880's....
I would say it was later.....Tabernacl Chapel was rebuilt in 1876.
The Empire was built in 1854 - with the amount of stories it has today. It started life as the town's first modern block of shops - chemist, grocer and Italian Warehouse, run by a Denbigh entrepreneur named Thomas Williams, who was 23 years old.
-
If you look at the block on the right, where it ends at Vadre Lane, the last premises was Ellerby's Central Library. You can just see the advertisement on the Vadre Lane side of the building.
The building far right on the corner with Gloddaeth St was the Post Office.
-
In this view circa 1890 you can see that Thomas Williams has moved from his Italian Warehouse and is now occupying the premises on the left, later to be known as "Hoosons Corner" after T. Esmoor Hoosen moved in.
Again, the Post Office can be seen on the opposite corner.
-
Re, the Empire Hotel.
Trojan I can see by the early pictures that you are correct.
I read somewhere that an additional 2 floors were added (extended upwards) ... but that is obviously not the case.

Hello again folks.....
On the way to picking up some more 'visualisations' of cinema and theatre connections, have encountered the following prints-not postcards-but Mostyn Street nevertheless
No 1 is very similar to that in post No 21 earlier, but earlier to that one according to the dating (1961) but the last time I was in Llandudno for a few weeks than just a few minutes.
The second is dated 1968 and of the same location-a few hard-to-spot differences maybe?
My own interest goes back to the 1961 period and the (imaginary?)memory of a permanent model railway exhibition somewhere halfway up the incline-or at least permanent during the holidays seasons annually?
Does the name St.Tudno's Hall have any relevance to this, or am I going completely AWOL?
-
Hi Ritchie,
I remember a permanent model railway exhibition in Masonic Street. There was also a doll exhibition as I recall.
-
Thought it would be easier to put these two together to compare:
-
The Empire Hotel at the top of Upper Mostyn St looks noticeably different, also the lampost on Hooson's corner looks like it has been re-conditioned in the bottom photo.
The Gemyddwyr sign above Phillips Jewellers is missing in the top photo.
Oh look Wrex.....Christmas lights in the bottom photo! %0%

Some photos of the Railway & Doll Exhibition in Masonic Street in the 1970s:

Excellent! $cool$
All the trains were made by Hornby. The Flying Scotsman (the fire-box would glow when the engine moved) steam engine and a class 35 Bayer Peacock Hymek diesel hydraulic are down in the right corner.
I had one of those red cranes in my layout too.
-
Thanks everyone so far, keep 'em coming please. Being a hot-blooded alpha-male the dolls' museum would have been a nothing, but the model railway is located only one street down from Mostyn Street-is that spooky after 50 years or what? D)

My Dad was the General Manager of Kirbys the Ford main dealers here from 1964 to 1967 when he was made redundant as the garage closed down. We lived in the flat above the mechanics across the road now Club 147 - of course nowadays you wouldn't be able to live in a flat above a garage! One day my Mum, who had 5 kids under 11 smelled burning - one of the mechanics had left an oily rag burning. Imagine Health and Safety police these days!
-
Welcome to the Forum, Maggie, keep those memories coming! :)

From 1968, this is the south side of Mostyn Street.
Shops are now:
District Bank = Animal Clothing
Hepworths = Next Clearance (just closed down)
Hilary Gerrard = Jessops
Wagstaffs/Baxters = Cafe Express

I was just wondering what happened to Hepworths and I found out that is is now known as...Next PLC!
-
Next PLC did not really originate from Hepworths though.
It was an offshoot, a seperate venture which eventually came back and swallowed Hepworths up.
It was the brainchild of George Davies (now better known as Asda George) from scratch in about 1982.
I met him personally many times, and he was ruthless and difficult.
I was working in Bradford when the embryonic idea of NEXT PLC came about, and the company I worked for handled thier warehousing.
I was offered shares in the NEXT brand at 6p. They were new, I was skint, so I declined.
Sometime later they were trading at 2700p and I would have been a millionaire.
But no. Ohhh No,

hi dave ,you left a shop out on your photo ,do you notice the clock under the hepworth sign

Don't think this one has been put on the forum before

Like the classic Jag in Church Walks-- must have been two-way traffic then !

A close look at the Wagstaff's Tobacconist & Baxters Butchers shops, now merged to form the Cafe Express premises.

Interesting photo from 1900. The corner behind the car is where Cafe Culture is now, whilst the Westminster Hotel can be seen across the road in St Georges Place, with Harry Jones Leather Stores on the ground floor.

Upper Mostyn St early '60's.
-
This was taken the same day.
I know it's been posted before, but I never get tired of looking at it....especially those vehicles. ^*^0
9311 NA is an almost new 2553cc Ford Zodiac, the top of the Ford UK range at the time.
The car opposite with 777 showing having the smallest engine available in that body, the 1703cc Consul.
Between the Consul and the camera is a 1952 Austin A40 Somerset.
The other side of the Consul, and driving away are Hillman Minxes of the post 1957 type, and a Morris Minor 1000 Tourer, double parked, probably belonged to the district nurse. :D
The van with a white roof is an Austin or Morris 10 cwt with a forward control driving position and the bus is a Bristol Lodekka, operated by Crosville of Chester.
The lady with the fashionable skirt stands behind a Bedford CA van with a minibus type conversion, probably by Martin Walter or Dormobile.
A Ford Anglia 105E approaches the camera in the distance to the right of the bus and a badly parked Vauxhall Victor Series 1F sticks out into the road just in front.
-
Mostyn Street in 1996. At first glance, it looks little different from today but there are quite a few subtle differences. Sandbachs cafe, Bakers Oven, Tandy, Diskos, Moss Chemists, Woolworths...all gone now.

A photo from 2006, showing two shops in Upper Mostyn Street. Both businesses have now changed, into Grumpys Sweet Shop & Kava Coffee Shop respectively:

How odd that there was no Red Windmill on top of the signpost outside the 'Moulin Rouge'
Yet, now that it is no longer the Moulin Rouge, there IS a red windmill high atop the sign outside!
-
Maybe the new windmill was being made, reprinted?
-
If memory serves me correctly, the windmill went away for refurbishment just before the cafe changed owners to become Kava.

should have said repainted :rage:

Apropos which is that one of the Moulin Rouge dancers lives in Llandudno...

The Dutch Cafe was up the stairs and had a different windmill. In my memory it was green but who knows. The down stairs was a ladies hairdressers run by a Miss Roberts..... I think, it's such a long time ago, ho hum :-[

Some cousins of Blodyn have recently found a series of glass photographic plates, showing Llandudno amongst other places. This one shows Mostyn St outside the Savoy Cinema (simply known as "The Cinema' at that time). Savoy was built in in 1914, so photo must have been taken after that.

I love old pictures and postcards. I collect them already 5 years. Last week i ordered in this print shop[/ a few postcards with nice old pictures.
Link removed as we don't permit this sort of advertising.

Oh dave I've never seen the sheep picture before . Were they coming down from the farms on the Orme and where do you think they were going?

Member 'Tick' is indeed a spammer.

Perhaps, but not a known one. I've removed the link, anyway.

It's a very old photo indeed, I wonder if they were going up to Wyddfyd Road on the Great Orme. Along that road are the remains of stone pens where a sheep fair was held annually on 22nd September until Mostyn Estates "legally stole" the common land in Llandudno. The local people then lost the common land on which they could graze their livestock.
-
Apparently all the sheep are black?
A particular breed perhaps?
-
Black Welsh Mountain Sheep. A special breed and the only all black breed. Z**
