Title: Questions about shops, pubs, cafes and chippies
Post by: DaveR on September 12, 2010, 09:15:57 pm
We all know about Hoosons Chemist on the corner of Mostyn Street/Gloddaeth Street but does anyone know where a Hoosons Cafe was in Mostyn Street?

"BUNDLE OF DEEDS AND DOCUMENTS, relating to property "The Grocer’s Shop’, situate on the corner of Gloddaeth Street and Mostyn Street, Llandudno, co. Caerns. Also premises on Mostyn Street known as "Hooson’s Café". Contains schedule of deeds and documents. Annexed: PROBATE OF THE WILL (18 October 1905) of George Burton Thomas of ’The Moorings’, North Road, Caernarfon. Also correspondence relating to the Will and notification of tithe exemption, 1878."

Good work, Sue.  :) Hooson's Cafe at 98 Mostyn Street turns out (unsurprisingly) to be the first floor of Hooson's Chemist (what is now the Asia restaurant). Hooson's grocers at 7 Mostyn street is now Barnacles Chip Shop.

Years ago Hoosons owned the whole corner from their shop round in to Bodhyfryd Road.  Think Nigel from the newsagents now owns and rents out those little sshops.

Hello peeps,

Does anybody know of any decent sport shops that offer “running gait analysis” in the three Town’s area? My google searches turned up nothing so thought I might ask a local.

Cheers.

There used to be one at the bottom of mostyn street but it closed some time ago. Have you tried a visit to a podiatrist? I went to one some time ago and was diagnosed as an "over pronator" so was able to buy running shoes to correct it. They might be able to help you.

According to Google "With the help of specialised computer software and trained specialists, a persons running pattern can be analysed and advice offered as to which type of shoe they should choose."

Bangor Uni  have a Post Graduate department specialisinghttp://www.postgraduatesearch.com/bangor-university/52362248/postgraduate-course.htm (http://www.postgraduatesearch.com/bangor-university/52362248/postgraduate-course.htm) in this area.

As with all these types of courses I believe they would be on the lookout fora  practical application of their threories and may therefore examine members of the public to gain experience.

Rhyl had a "Hoosons Cafe" . It disappeared some time in the 1970s or 80s. An unusual name, anybody know of a connection?

I remember visiting a podiatrist for the same thing.

All he said to me was, "I wouldn't like to be in your shoes"  8)

If you have a look at page 3 of "Everything to do with Conwy" and the list of shops and businesses, there is mention on Bangor Road of Parrys Watch and Parrys Pot Shop. Don't know if these are relevant. One was opposite the Albion where I think Anthony Flints' estate agents is now, and the other either next door or across the road.

Thanks, Bri. That's the shop that Steve Dickens wanted to open as a cafe and had tailors dummies dressed as judges in the window, I think?

It certainly was.

I used to have my own office next door when Fletcher & Poole first opended in 1998.

The manager of the funeral parlour then was Elwyn Jones, who was a prominent figure in the Welsh Conservative Party.

The deeds do mention the brewery that owned it but apart from that im stuck.

Any help would be wounderful

Welcome to the forum!

In 1929 number 12 Lower Gate Street was named "The Royal Oak" inhabited by Mrs Mary Louisa Jones, not listed as a tavern at that time, but apartments. I'm sure someone on the forum will know when it ceased to be a tavern!

Thanks, Miss P, I think I did that one in Photoshop. It's pretty simple, you just highlight the bit you want to keep in colour, then invert the selection and turn the colour down. You can get some nice little effects with it and something like the Smallest House is ideal to practice on:

Just been to Home Bargains for my usual exciting shop of bleach, toilet cleaners etc and was very surprised to see a huge range of artists materials, paints, sketch books brushes and all manner of crafty bits and pieces. I kept my hands firmly in my pockets, as I have so much craft stuff that I could set up a shop ! Might be worth a look !

When Sheldon's closed down, Alpha Business Centre (ABC) further down Penrhyn Road started to stock artist's materials as they saw a gap in the market.  That said my missus goes to a specialist art shop inb Bangor that has a lovely little gallery upstairs to get all her stuff!

There have been a couple of them in recent years, both run by the same lady who has threatened to open several businesses in Upper Mostyn Street, but never actually got them off the ground.

One was on Bodhyfryd Road, (behind Nigel Robert's Newsagents).. the other by the Con Club in Upper Mostyn Street.

Sadly, despite long hours and hard work, they proved to be not viable.

Fruit and Veg is available in Sainsbury's, Marks and Sparks etc....

These guys have been selling fruit and veg in 'dudno for years..at least since I was a kid in the 80's. They are wholesalers but will sell to the public at their warehouse.

That's really kind of you Llechwedd. If you do get the opportunity I am looking for black hat elastic to re-thread a bracelet, so only need a small amount. The stuff on the internet seems to involve large amounts.
I re-did it with some spandex stuff, but it has gone very loose, so I don't think that it was the correct thing to do it with.
If you have any luck, please let me know and I will arrange a meeting with you.

Golly Hollins-you must be as bad as me-- I have a chest of drawers full of bits and pieces ( no hat elastic though), some of it must be 100 years old as it was my Grandma's. I took an empty spool to the shop when I wanted some button thread to explain what it was that I needed. The chap in the shop had hysterics and asked where I had got the old spool from.

Back to the matter in question. Thankyou, but I think that could be too thick, I imagine that 1mm would be what I would need. That seems to be the usual thickness on offer as I have looked on the net.

Yes, you are right. I have just measured it again under a magnifying glass and I think it is 1mm. Presume it has always be made that thickness.

Hi Nemesis,

I've been trying to work out how to pm you but given up!

I have got you a meter of 1.5mm hat elasatic from London -just back.  The man in the shop said they don't do any narrower but they had shirring (?sp.) but he thought it too thin and unable to support heavy beads.  You'd have to double it over which kind of defeats the object.  PM me and I'll pass it on.  Don't worry if you don't want it now as I may in the future you never know when bracelets are going to explode!
Title: Re: Questions about shops, pubs, cafes and chippies

Hi Llechwedd.

Thankyou very much indeed. We don't have a pm system anymore, don't know why, but it makes life very awkward at times.

The elastic sounds great, Hollins has also found some, so I shall be able to make plenty of bracelets including my own ( mine is magnetic).

The only thing I can think of is that we arrange to meet, or if you tell me how much I owe you I can leave the money for you and I can collect the elastic from Hope House Shop if you are in town.

Thanks again

Nem.

Many thanks Llechwedd, I have just called in and collected your envelope. I have also made the donation as you suggested.

Thanks again

My pleasure Nem.  I love that shop in London it's dead old fashioned but they have everything.  Never knew there were so many types of elastic.
Thanks for your message Ian re. private messages don't need to now!

Have been in a couple in the North of England, could have been in York and / or Hexam ( long time ago). They were like that -- I could have spent hours in there !

Can anyone tell me if their is a decent (any even mediocre) music shop in the area?

I needed to get hold of half a dozen tin whistles last week, and wanting to 'buy local' rather than order online I took a walk round Llandudno and Conwy without success.

No apology needed Sir, things change.

Thanks for the good wishes, as I said earlier would take me seconds to order online BUT I will always try to buy from a local business where possible.

When we bought our new house in Llandudno we tried to buy our furniture from a local furniture shop (not a chain shop) thinking we would be doing the local  economy a good turn.  Bed - delivery 4 weeks they said  - then 6 then 8 then when they told us 12 we cancelled as we were now sleeping on a blow up bed and bought from a chain store in Mostyn Park -   Same with a chest of drawers - linen etc was in a box in the bathroom.  Ikea was next week delivery but we wanted "real" wood.
Shutters - no we can't do them - so went to J.Lewis in Chester although the delivery was 12 weeks we knew this  - nobody was interested  in the local area to do or find out about them.
Carpets - again J Lewis came out from Chester and did them immediately -  whole house - worth lots of money but local were not anywhere near the time limit or service.
So when we wanted other things we just went to Chester and  picked out a sideboard and freezer etc and they were with us within 2 days.

Tried hard with LLandudno suppliers but not good service.

Hi Folks, apologies if I have posted this in the wrong place but I'm new to the Forum and this is my first post.

A friend of mine moved into a house in Llandundo last year which came with an outbuilding which he has been told used to be a chippy. The "shop front" of the building is on Brookes St. Several people have mentioned that it used to be "Greasy Lil's"? I'm presuming this was a local nickname for it? Any info about its history or stories about its time as a chippy would be much appreciated, and if anyone knows if there are any photos of it when it was still a chippy anywhere then that would be fantastic.

Many thanks.

Paul C.

When I was in the Boys Brigade, one of the men in charge ran the chippy.   I can't seem to remember his real name but he was nick named Hitler so he must have been quite strict in the drill parade.
He must have been a nice person though as we always went there for fish & chips after BB  and it was always handy when we were in Llandudno Youth Centre which was  just around the corner

a gang of us lads had our last drink in the albert on a foul wet night and decided to go for chips on the way home,so we went to greasy lils,as you may remember the ordering area would only take about four people at a time you ordered then stood out side till it was ready.the owner was frying and the other lady sat down talking to the eggman,on top of the range was two cats, suddenly one of the cats got up and pi**ed on the top and the pee dripped into the boiling fat which started spitting, meanwhile lil kept on shaking the basket and talking across to the eggman, the next thing to happen was one of us started to heave up then another then another in the end we were all honking outside in the rain, there must have been twelve of us ill, needless to say there was no takers for chips that night nor I believe in the future.

I remember seeing the older lady (Thick Irish?) frying up a fresh batch of chips. She picked one out and chewed on it to see if it was soft enough, it was still quite hard so she tossed it back into the fryer and carried on cooking it!

Some people have no shame, I remember about 2 years ago a young lad came in the Legion and asked me if it was legal to pour slops from the drip tray into your pint.  I told him no it wasn't.  He said he'd been down the pub (Now got different owners) and caught the landlady topping his pint up from the slops.  When he questioned her she said "what's the problem, I cleaned them out this morning" and then threatened to bar him if he kicked off  :o

Hugo, mentioning the Archway Chippie in the same thread as "Greasy Lil's" is sacrilege! I can clearly remember the two sisters and also the "Eggman", who I think was married to one of them and was from Penrhynside and used to drive a green Austin A55 van. We only ever used to go there only if every other chippie in town was shut and then only with a certain amount of trepidation as I got I right hiding from a local "hardman" and his mates late one Saturday night who thought I was somebody else and then when he realised his mistake apologised profusely and offered to buy me some chips as a peace offering!
While we are on the subject of old chippies can anybody remember the one in Bodafon Street behind the Savoy cinema which I think used to be called "Harry's"?
By the way the walk you described recently up the Gribyn is a great walk/scramble and the photos were excellent. We did it the other way round many years ago  by going up Bristly Ridge and then back down the Gribyn to Ogwen Cottage.

.
When we used to go to the Savoy Cinema we would use the emergency doors at the back and go out that way to the Chippie.
We also used the same emergency door to get into the Savoy when  one of our gang would actually pay to get in and he would then open the door and about half a dozen others would be waiting outside ready to get in for  free.      :-[

I expect you all know the American style diner in Mostyn street that got such a terrible press after it opened. And it's trip adviser reviews were  even worse.
But never mind, it hasent put them off. The old Marsh, also once called the Marsh Warden, in Rhuddlan is now being comprehensively stripped down to its bare roots prior to opening under the same name and style. They are brave. It's right next door to a travel lodge restaurant and either a Pizza Hut or a KFC, I'm not sure which.

I wondered about that too, Mike. The restaurant next door (Table Table) is pretty good for a chain restaurant and the KFC is always very busy. I'm not sure Harveys can stand up to the competition there.
