Title: Riddles
Post by: Michael on December 14, 2010, 08:56:57 pm
This doesent really fit in Quizs. So Ive made a new topic. I had better tell you all that I have made this up myself----so don't laugh'

A man is looking out of a window in a building in the 3 towns area. Outside he sees another man holding up an enormous mirror, reflecting the building he is in, down to every last detail. Five minutes later the man and mirror have gone. But-------he can still see the reflected picture. Where is the building?      I wouldnt mind betting who will get this right, probably in about 5 minutes  Mike

Well, 13 members have viewed but no takers. So, limit the area.  Its in the centre of Colwyn Bay.  (By the way, moderators are allowed to post!!)

Safe to say this topic is not setting the forum alight. 20 viewers. No takers.  So, in a last attempt, the man is standing in a shop type building, right in the centre of Colwyn Bay.

I thought of someone living opposite the new Welsh Assembly building which is mostly glass, but that's wrong.

Maybe he is opposite an Estate Agents and can see details of the property on show?????? Z**

Other than that my lateral thinking cap has failed me.   Nice one Mike, a bit of a stymie and no par score on this hole!    L0L

Thanks for your response Yorkie. I.m off out now with my camera to take two photos which I will put on here tonight to answer the  riddle. That is if the moderators let it be shown.  LOL  because one of them, well, I would have bet a fiver against anyone he would have got the answer straight away.

I was in Colwyn Bay this afternoon and was looking out for the building or someone taking photos but still no idea. ???
I then drove out of Penrhyn Road and was directed to take a left turn by a Policewoman directing traffic. In fact there were lots of Police in Conway Road directing traffic and there were crowds of people standing on the pavements watching what was going on.
Perhaps Mike is having an escort into town?    Just heard the Police sirens so something is happening down in the Bay.
Can't wait for all to be revealed tonight Mike.             ?{}?

Lateral thinking has pricked me, and I think that the building is on the opposite side of the road to the reflected image, which appears to succinctly answer your question!      )*)&

Well, Hugo, I don't know anything about the Police activity, "Its nothing to do with me, honest gov"    But, you did drive right through the site, its half way up or down Penrhyn Road i.e. on both sides. I couldnt take the photos, nothing to do with the Police, it was just parked vans in the way. So, its Santander the Bank. Two branches  directly opposite each other, both identical decour, two identical cash machines, identical posters advertising all the marvelious financial schemes positioned in identical spots in the windows  identical doors. Yorkie, you are stretching my brain a bit, I'm not too sure I understand what you write. But  it wasent what I had in mind.  Mike

But were the cars double parked by the banks Mike?      They usually are and it can be a pain at times but next time I'm there I'll take more notice of the buildings!

My logic circuits are being overloaded by Mike's riddle. Surely if you looked out of the building at a mirror, then the image you were looking at would be reversed and would, therefore, look totally different when the mirror was removed, not identical?  :rage: :-X

Mike......bad news...

Exactly my thoughts Dave, but didn't like to say anything as the one on the other side could have been set up as the opposite and as a "mirror" image!     ZXZ

Title: Another Riddle?
Post by: Yorkie on December 16, 2010, 01:26:21 pm
For this one has to assume that the World is a perfect sphere of 24,000 miles circumference.

A man (or it could be a woman) lays a piece of string measuring 24,000 miles all the way round the equator.
He then decides that he would like the string to be half an inch above ground level for all of the 24,000 miles.
How much extra string would he need?
An estimate will be sufficient - the nearest to within a limit set by me will get 5 Brownie Points.

The circumferance of a circle is pi x radius.

To increase the radius by 1/2 inch, the circumferance would need to be increased by 1/2 inch x pi.

So I'm going to say the string needs to be lengthened by a little less than 2 inches.
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: Fester on December 17, 2010, 12:58:51 am
Paddy, I think that would only be true if you extended the circumference by 1/2 inch at two points only (i.e directly opposite poles)

its a big number...
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: Paddy on December 17, 2010, 01:01:26 am
Fester, I've done the sums again and I'm convinced I'm right. Although I agree it is a surprisingly small number.
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: Yorkie on December 17, 2010, 08:06:33 am
Of course Paddy is almost correct!   It IS a small number.

The Circumference of a Circle is Pi x Diameter.  We do not need to know the diameter as we do know that we are increasing it by 1 inch.  Therefore the extra length needed is Pi x 1inch  which equals 3.142 inches.

Seems ridiculous but it is absolutely true.  Pddy's mistake is he used radius instead of diameter.  (Area of a circle is Pi x R2

Here is the maths

24.000 miles = 1,520,640,000 inches.  Therefore diameter = that divided by 3.142 which equals 483,971,992.4 inches

Increase diameter by 1 inch gives 483,971,993.4 then x 3.142 gives 1,520,640,003.142

Extra length  3.142 inches!   Well done Paddy- you're the closest - 2 Brownie Points for the effort!
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: Merddin Emrys on December 17, 2010, 08:39:42 am
I'm still not convinced that its only 3.142"

if I have a 10" diameter sphere then the circumference is 31.42"
and if I add 0.5" to the radius and have a diameter of 11" then the circumference is 34.562" which gives an increase of 3.142"

with a 10 foot sphere (120") add 1" to the diameter and the circumference becomes 380.182" which gives an increase of
3.142"  :o

I've just prooved you right yet i'm still not convinced  _))*

Why is it pointless to grit roads with rock salt when the temperature is below -9°C?

A very minor, simple and relevant riddle:

because the water will freeze even with the salt in it at that temperature
Title: Re: Riddles

Yes. Rock salt works by lowering the freezing point of water to -9°C, so if temperatures fall further, it will not work.

  Bags and Beads

You are given 5 bags. There are 10 beads in each of the bags. In four of the bags, the beads each weigh 10 grams.  In the remaining bag,  each bead  weighs only 9 grams. All the bags and beads look identical. You must  find out which bag has the lighter beads. The problem is that all the bags look identical and all the beads look identical. You can use a scale, but it has to be a single-tray scale, not a two-tray balance scale.  Also, you may use the scale only once. How can you find out which bag has the lighter beads?

Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: JasonW on December 17, 2010, 07:32:58 pm
Place all the bags on the scale at the same time.
Remove each bag one at a time.
The heavier bags will lower the total weight by 100g when it is taken off the scale
The lighter bag will only affect the total weight by 90g
Title: Re: Riddles
Post by: TheMedz on December 17, 2010, 07:35:13 pm
With a marker label each bag from 1 to 5. Take 1 bead from bag 1 and 2 beads from bag 2 right through to 5 beads from bag 5. Weigh the 15 beads you have now collected. If they weigh 150 grams then all the bags would have contained 10g beads (Not Possible as one contains 9 gram beads). If the 15 beads weigh 149 grams then its bag 1 containing the 9 gram beads. 148 and its bag 2 etc through to 145 if it's bag 5.

An esy one.

There was this magician who was playing some smart tricks on the road side. One boy went to him and the man said to the boy, "I will just touch your forehead and write your actual name on this paper. If I am wrong then I will give you some of my magic stuffs, otherwise you have to give me £5." The boy agreed as he thought that no matter what name he writes, he will deny it. At the end, the boy was the one who lost the bet. How?
