Title: Shops in Llandudno
Post by: DaveR on November 18, 2010, 09:19:14 pm
Another old thread recovered from the dusty archives of the Llandudno Local. I'm afraid that the photo links etc will no longer work but its still an interesting read:

TALK: SUMNERS & ARNOLDS
I remember Sumners, as will hundreds of other people, and Peggy Bleakley who ran it for many years
with help from her Sons Richard and also David, who sadly passed away a few years ago. I remember
visiting Llandudno for the first time with my future wife and being taken with her parents to Sumners for a
Saturday lunchtime G & T. The first of many visits I must confess. It was sad to see it go and it
effectively removed an institution from the face of Mostyn Street and Llandudno.
Sumner's Fish and Chips were the best in town!
Sumners - we used to go there for Tea on Saturdays. They used to serve a great selection of cream
cakes on a silver cake stand.
As I grew up, I occasionally went for a drink in the cocktail bar. It was a great institution!

Sumners was a great shop, I used to go there every Saturday as a kid for a bap! Looking at the photo, I
also see Arnolds, another familiar name. Q. Can anyone remind me what they sold?
A. Arnold sold allsorts, clothes and household stuff, ornament, scarfes purses and wallets, handbags,
hats, it was like an "are you being served?" moment, I remember they had terrific sales, people queued
outside, even overnight to get a massive reduction. They were also very good foe curtains and bed linen.

SHOPS: STANGE & CO
Another shop that hasn't been mention that was an institution was Stange & Co where I worked for years
on saturdays and school holidays. The owner Jimmy Rowlands was a second dad to me, an absolutely
brilliant bloke full of good humour. I remember the Christmas period, it was hectic but great fun,the
blokes staggering in from the Carlton on Christmas eve to buy the missus some flowers, fond memories
of Martin Payne who bought a big bunch of crysanth blooms and by the time he got 20 yds down mostyn
st there was hardly a petal left on them!! also remember Joyce Elias who worked with me for years.
Great fun.
I remember Stange's as well. There used to be a great display of fruit and veg outside on the pavement.
How the sales assistants braved the weather though always amazed me. I also remember the
tobacconists next door ran by Jimmy's brother I think, Billy. When they both collectively closed down,
Billy Rowlands, in a deal to get planning permission for the site, was reported to have promised to use
the elegant wooden shop front from both premises in a new shop development in Conwy. Unfortunately

this never transpired and another piece of Llandudno finery was seemingly lost forever.
going back to Stanges, the brothers jimmy and Billy sold out and bought pubs including the Cottage Loaf
who remebers Dunphys which was next door to Stanges, when I first started working part time for
Stanges I used to drool at the hams and cheeses. Derek.

LOCAL SHOPKEEPERS: 'DAVIES THE JEW'
Anyone remember "Davies the Jew" in Madoc St? My parent's always used to buy our school uniforms
there.
What about "Waterworths" further down on the corner of Madoc / Lloyd St.
:D I remember Davies' the jews all the jeans piled up really high. My mum went there also for uniforms
and things you couldn't get anywhere else. Wouldn't pass the fire regs now all those clothes, how did
the old man ever find anything?
My parents were very good friends with mr and mrs davies he was an amazing shop keeper as you say
every thing was piled high yet he knew were every size and style were i think most of llandudnos
children at the time were clothed out for school from there.
Can still see the shop as it was in my memeory he with his tape around peering over the tops of tje
jeasnshis neck and his wife sat behind the old glass counter.
Hi Pobo.
my Mam always used to go to` Davies the jews` for our school stuff as well,& we always went there for
our jeans & things .
I remember my mother said to him one day as she went in, "morning, mr Jew" he just laughed & told her
that his proper name was `Davies.
He used to come up to the synagogue every week, when i was the caretaker,He was a lovely man, but
he was`nt married ,the lady in the shop with him was his sister, & they both lived just off Gloddaeth ave.
Now i always just took it they were husband and wife i never thought anything other as they were always
together my parents knew them well i obviosly didnt lol my father used to work for coopers when it was
up mostyn street where the horseshoe grill was he used to deliver to the mr Davies at home always
had to be during a lunch time or wednesday afternoon as this was the only time they were not in the
shop But they were relly nice people and never forgot you every time youd go in they would know who
you were.
Hi, do you remember mr Davies favourite saying that whatever you were buying he would say "it will be
going up next week, you are very lucky you bought it now".

Another good furniture store was Boote's on Broadway. I think it's a tool hire shop now.
My mates dad owned that with his brother. One of the owners was Graham Boote. Mate was Tim.

I remember the days before you could get any decent "togs" so you had to catch the bus to Rhyl to go to
Horesh and look for a decent Ben Sherman. I used to dread going for fear of being beaten up by the
Rhyl thuggies. It was like mission accomplished when you got home with your new shirt ready to go out
that night and wow your mates. I remember wearing a slightly garish Ben Sherman to school and Curly
Bill (great teacher) said to me "Jones is that a school shirt" "no sir" I replied "it's one of
mine"........detention for me !!

A good trendy clothing store for guys back in the 80s was Kit Clothing. It started in Queens Road,
Craig-y-don, then moved to Vaughn St, around the corner from the Broadway Hotel. It was owned by a
guy called Des ("The shirt is twenty quid-but I'll let you have it for fifteen"). The popular brand of clothing
was Matinique. Those were the days when the aftershave and perfume manufacturers started to branch
out and make clothing, Polo, Ralph Lauren etc.

I nearly p****d myself laughing, that was all he ever said. Another line was "only got the one in so
nobody else will have it" I remeber buying a t-shirt there it was supposed to be 10 quid but he give it to
me for 8! Only one he had, then walk into the cottage loaf and Joe Neary is wearing the same shirt.....

Gaye Gifts was right next to Clare's and the shop featured a curved wall (now in the stock room of the
phone shop) the corresponding curved wall forms the circular staircase of Clare's.
Gaye Gifts was latterly run by a real character, Ian MacInnes, he used to sell all manner of gifts such as
silver jewellery and watches . I can always remember him making a sandwich of four matchboxes inside
two postcards. Apparently they really flew out as novel souvenirs of Llandudno!
Ian is retired now and lives in Deganwy.

SWEET SHOPS
Where did you get your sweets from? Billy Mac's, Red Shop or Jack Leonard's in Madoc Street,
Thompsons in Trinity Avenue, the Tuck Shop by John Bright School to name a few.
Q. What was the name of the other Madoc St sweetshop before it became a bookshop?
Penny shrimps, parma violets, penny chocolate bars, fizzers, sherbert dabs, cherry lips come to mind.
There was a sweet shop called the Kiosk next to the main post office where we would buy sherbet
lollies. I remember the Red Shop and Days by the traffic lights, and Jacks in Alexandra Road. I
remember a shop in Madoc Street where I used to buy Spanish Gold, but it was the one next to the
corner shop where the Christmas shop was for a few years, I don't remember the Book shop one.
Cimattis at the end of Clifton road was another good shop, and at the corner on Trinity Avenue was the
Dairy.
My Grandfather ran the shop (JB Tuck Shop) on the corner of Howard Road in the 1930's - there are a
couple of photo's on the members gallery on this website.
we must have kept the local dentists in business!
Leonards was the one in Madoc street! There was also a Thompsons around the corner by the Carlton
near the prom.
Yes, Leonards was on the corner of Madoc St and Red Shop or Waverleys was next to the pub owned
by the Plumber family but the one in the middle with Welsh speaking chap which he turned into a
bookshop, we used to go there on Sundays after church. I think his name was Mr. Hughes?
Our Historian Richard Sutton says Mr Hughes did run the shop in the middle of Madoc Street, he ran it
with his wife, they had a son called Eryll Hughes. The shop was called Marsdens. Cimattis was more of
a grocers than a sweet shop, a bit of everything really. Thompsons around the corner of the Carlton, sold
beach toys for the tourists, plenty of pop to drink with the likes of Corona and Tizer which you could get
tuppence back for the bottle, they had wire tops in them days which were resealable. We used to have a
giggle with Mr Wright at the top of Mostyn Street corner Church Walks, we would bring in bottles which
we found and he would pay, after we would sneak round back and return the same bottles again,
meaning we'd get four pence for the bottles, he never found out thankfully!
I used to work for John Smith at Thompsons on South Parade, he had an incredible collection of old
postcards etc and knew so much interesting stuff about local businesses and people. his grandfather g r
thompson was known as the postcard king because of the number he used to sell in his several
outlets.does anyone remember their shop in Mostyn Street where the coffee centre is now?
I liked the Premier Tobacco & Sweet Shop in lower Mostyn Street. There were always loads of jars of
wonderful sweets on display.
I used to buy my pipe tobacco from the Premier!!! I used to have a quarter ounce of Liquorice and 3
quarters of an ounce of Vanilla mixed, used to smoke a pipe in the winter time while working on the pier,
good way to keep your hands warm. :)
Getting the thread back on topic, I remember Sandbach used to sell some nice hand made chocolates. I
always remember the aroma as one entered the shop and the mahogany counter running down one
wall, very traditional.
Q. I don't know for certain though, did they make the chocolates on the premises or were they simply
bought in?

Sandbach's made their own chocolates on the premises. My Mother Nellie Roberts woked in the shop
about 30 years ago for Mr David Sandbach She made up boxes of chocolates to order and putting
customer choices into bags as they waited. I always had soft centres for myself and milk chocolate drops
for children. It is sad this shop is no longer there. There is more info and pictures elsewhere on the
Forum. It is true, as someone said, it was like the Tardis a small outside but amazing inside.

BUNNEY'S CORNER
As I recall, the building shown in the photo was demolished sometime in the late 1980s/early 1990s, as I
believe it had structural problems. It was rebuilt it much the same style but had a corner turret feature
added.
Bunneys corner was the site of "Bunneys" department store, in its day it would have rivaled places like
"Clares" apparently it was a highly respected shop. My Auntie worked there, and they had staff flats on
the premises. The stores basement often got flooded what with the drainage system back then.
FACT: This shop was known as 'Bunney's Corner'

Great pic, you can certainly see the metal bracing that's holding the building together until it can be
demolished.
I love to see the photos from the no-so-distant past (1970s/80s), so we can see how quickly things
change.
Q. What was the shop in the pic between greenwoods and supercards racking my brains here trying to
remember.

What was the sweet shop between the Red Garages and Vaughan Street general post office called?.
We remember buying flying saucers, jubblies, penny arrows, black jacks, mojos and fruit salads and of
course the all time favourite, wooden liquorice sticks from there. It had a small door and window, but
once inside it was like a tardis with bits everywhere!

I reply to Lifes A Trip
The gentleman killed at Dunphys store Was I believe Mr Chamberlin the Managing Director. I do not
know if he was killed by the Woolworth lift or Dunphys Wharehouse hoist that was at the rear outside
the store. I would be suprised if he had been inside the Woolworth lift well. Mr Chamberlin before his
promotion had been the manager of Dunphys store in Craig-Y-Don.They had 5 shops altogether The
others being in Deganwy,Conwy and Penmaenmawr + a WharehouseAnd Bakery where The Cottage
Loaf now Stands. When thet were demolished Several beams were salvaged and used in the Loaf.
These beams originaly salvaged from ships that had been wrecked on llandudno Beach in the late 1850
s and were part of the ships masts.
The comment about the aroma in the store brings back memories. The smells were from various spices
that were sold loose, ground coffeeand the sides of Irish and Danish bacon that were hung from the
ceiling and of course the smoked hams and bacon. a smell you could die for Things you could really get
a flavour and taste from.I am talking about the late 1950s.
Just befre super markets came about. Dunphys was classed as a High CLASS STORE.Most of the staff
were characters and long serving but that is another story.

That's correct Trevor, the rear vehicle is an Austin A40, which was produced between 1958-1967. The
vehicle in the front is a Rover 80 which was produced between 1960-1962.

in my 1969 trade directory, Arnolds is advertised as Rochester House, 83-85 Mostyn Street.
The Arnold family originated from Narborough in Norfolk. There was a shop in Sussex Street Rhyl, run
by Robert Arnold, and the Llandudno shop was established in 1882. In 1901 resident at the premises
was Alexander Hughes, his wife Charlotte (nee Arnold) and their 6 children. Also resident was
Charlotte's sister Mary.

I used to buy a vast assortment of shoes & boots there as styles changed over the years. Platform shoes
with four-inch heels and gold tipped toes for the Youthie Disco, Jesus sandals for the summer, black
brogues for church and Clarkes Commandoes for school. My first pair of boots were Major Domo's (poor
man's Doctor Martens) before I saved up to buy the real McCoy with 'Bouncing Soles'. I was never the
proud owner of a pair of Hush Puppies though for some reason.

Central place carpets was located on Trinity place until the early 90s (it could still be there) Basically
what he meant was it is just off Trinity Ave so you would look from Mostyn St looking down trinity ave
(approx where Stuarts seconds is) you followed it down past the traffic lights (by where billy macs was)
carry on past the Youth club (old hospital) past the school and just before the park there is a turning on
the left that is trinity place more like 500 yards down the road it was in some old factory buildings and
they had a huge sign on the side that could be read from on the train.
(hope its all accurate as my memory is going and im only 28 :))

My family came to Llandudno for summer holidays almost every year from 1971 to 1982. My sisters and
I always bought our sweets from a shop on Madoc Street just up from The Albert pub. I remember the
name of the shop being "Waverley" and I think the proprietors names were R & A Halliday (although I
could be wrong). The staff were always very friendly and even seemed to remember us even though we
only went there for 2 weeks a year! Does anyone know what became of the people that would have
been running it during that era?
We mostly stayed in Caroline Road at a place called "Celyn" which was run by a Mr A Jones who live at
Ffordd Ysbyty. Sometimes we would go to a curious little chippie in Brookes Street. It was "The Bijou"
and was only open a couple of days a week. I remember a pair of old ladies running it and possibly a
chap in a wheelchair but I was very young when we last went in there so my memory could be a bit
fuzzy. Again, if anyone can shed any light on this I would be grateful. Cheers

The YouTube video for Central Place Carpets was interesting! I'm sure lots of you will also remember
the advert (which played in the local cinemas) for Orme Cycle (on Vaughan Street). I wonder if anyone
on this forum would know how to get hold of that one? :D
The best I have in my collection is about a dozen glass advertising slides advertising local businesses,
The Wool Post, The Buttery, The Roman Room are just a few to name.

I think there was another ironmongers shop on Vaughn Street, a few shops down fron the post office,
and another one in upper Mostyn Street. The man in Nails n stuff really did go to B&Q if you needed
anything he hadn"t got in stock. I remember once seeing him in B&q buying the item I had promised him
I would call back for in the afternoon, and then going to his shop and paying about 50p more than I
would of paid in B&Q. But you expect to pay more for that kind of service. He knew everything about

You will probably find Steve working more sensible hours these days at another newsagents up by the

No, it was in Old Road. There was a semi-detached house called Greenhill (1817) which operated two
shops. Ann Jones opened Llandudno's first Post Office here at 18 Old Road, in October 1838. It was
located in a shed at the side of the house.

I remember that place Mike. Took many a BSA & Webley there for new springs. Wasn't the coal

Just remembered it was Owen Hughes coal merchants.
My husbands Uncle had the Coal Merchants, obviously after Hughes had it up until about 10 years ago I

Basically, it was closed to stop animals from wandering down the hill into town.

Yea, I can see you now in your light tan leather jacket with 'Pearson' embossed with studs on the back,
in honour of Stuart 'Pancho' Pearson, Man Utd's No 9. These were your pre-Leeds days.

The "Dale Jones " Cafe and bakery was next to the Kings Head, and until about 5 years ago the actual
Cafe upstairs was exactly as it was when it closed down in the 70's. Including the kitchen with the old
cooker and so on. The building still belongs to the Dale Jones family and they visit Llandudno often,
unfortunatly Mrs Dale-Jones passed away several years ago. A truly lovely lady!!!

The photo must be pre-1901 as I can't make out any tram tracks, only wheel furrows in the un-metalled
roadway.
Is that a pile of horse manure outside the shop on the right?

Hi SnakeCorp,
The building was designed by the prominent Llandudno Architect, Arthur Hewitt, (he also designed the
Savoy, Palladium and Winter Gardens to name a few). Somewhere I have a photo taken of Victoria
Buildings (which is the name of the parade of shops) shortly after they were built. If I find it I will pass to
Craig to see if it can be scanned in.
I think the shops are now owned by Janet Finch Saunders (see also Garages) and rented out.

at it from victoria st. i always remeber going there with my dad on a saturday ,he use to go and get a
couple of bottles of beers to take home,i remember the bottles they had a rubber screw stopper with a
red washer .we would take the empty bottles back as you got i think a penny back on each bottle, and a
pint of mild in those days was only about 11 old pennies a pint.

Yes - if I got clothes that weren't from rummage sales (social institutions in those days - anyone else

I wouldn't say that - Millets was established by J.M.Millet in 1893 with stores in Southampton and Bristol.
It moved to Northampton in 1986 and was bought by Blacks Leisure plc in 1999. It now has over 260
stores in the UK and is the largest travel and outdoor chain in the country.
but who cares - the tents are half price :D

I know it used to be a butchers, as when Ethel Austin revamped the building last year, the tiled walls
were exposed and the tiles made pictures of animals, sheep pigs cows etc. On the sign it says

Trojan, I seem to think the shop was owned by a well-known local family who farmed up on the Great
Orme.
The ornamental sign probably goes back to the mid-nineteenth century.

Well done 'thelittleimp' & 'bri roberts', it was indeed a butchers shop. The proprietor was Edward Owen -
you can see him standing in the doorway, wearing the suit in the photo below. The sign also states his
business was founded in 1834, but this was some time before there were any buildings like this on
Mostyn St. It is believed he started his business in the hut on the beach, where Lord Mostyn, John
Williams, and Owen Williams had their historic meeting, implementing the development of Llandudno.

I was thinking along the same lines as you - the inscriptions were probably blacked-out so as not to
detract shoppers as to the usage of the modern store's that have been there over the years.
I was wondering if the sign has a preservation order, for it to have been kept in place all these years?

I think there is a preservation order of some sort on it,same as the Clock above the Halifax Building
Society (86 Mostyn St)a few doors up. There is a fund set up to keep that running. It used to be "The
Clock Vaults" (Overton House)owned by Richard Owen. I have yet to find the connection between the
two families but i have a birth certificate dated 1882 stating a birth at 80 Mostyn St for one of Richard
Owens decendants

The rear of Boots the chemist (as was) along with the old Hotpoint building in the distance. I think the car park used to be run by the Royal British Legion??? Then the second picture was taken when they knocked the hotpoint building down and got ready to demolish all the old shops ready to build the Victoria Centre.

That area brings back memories. Had many a game of football in that car park during evenings when it was empty.

Wrights Cafe near the junction with Stephen St for a hearty breakfast, and Davis' Car Hire next-door.

The Leun Hong Chinese Restaurant (or was it the Hong Shing Bri?  ;D) was further east of Boots, near Williams Typewriter. The rear of the restaurant bordered the car park and had a small yard where they kept crates full of beer bottles.  ZXZ

The store frontage in that photo dates from the Liptons days, I think. I remember there was a separate entrance on the right hand side (visible in the photo), with a flight of stairs leading up to the first floor. The stairs may still be there as there is still an unused doorway onto Mostyn Street. Didn't someone say there was a cafe on the first floor once? If you look up through the first floor windows now, you can sometimes see a large domed ceiling if the lights are on up there.

Ah yes, I remembered the discussion on the old forum. Mr Wan had a son Tony I recall. The Hong Shing was in Lloyd St. It became an American style restaurant for a time, DC's Chuckwagon. Isn't that the place Ainsworths have just refurbished into a cafe?

Nostalgia: How Clares department store earned place in North Wales folklore

THIS week’s nostalgia feature looks at a Llandudno department store steeped in almost 100 years of history.

Clares, at 97-99 Mostyn Street, was established by the Baxter family in 1927, which saw it rebuilt into a ladies’ dressmaker’s and milliner’s.

Born into a poor family in Runcorn, Robert Clare Baxter had been so successful by 1927 that he had seven businesses along the North Wales coast.

This included Baxter’s Bon in Lower Mostyn Street, which sold good-quality men’s clothing.

He later married one of his employees, Mary Lewis, and when he died in 1950, the business continued under the guidance of his son Dougie and grandchildren John and Ann.
