Title: My Grandmother's Chair
Post by: Keith Edwards on May 13, 2019, 08:49:05 pm
On page 81 of the 4th edition of Ward Lock’s Red Guide for Llandudno, Colwyn Bay and North Wales (© 1967) it lists “Pleasant Walks for Llandudno”. Walk number 2 is My Grandmother’s Chair. The description reads, “A seat formed from two flat stones a few hundred yards to the North of Gloddaeth Woods. Follow the shore road until Nant-y-Gamar Road is reached. Continue along this road to a gate at the end. Beyond gate approach wall bordering the wood and keeping wall and wood on left a farmhouse is seen below. Turn right past farmhouse and the stones will be found on the slope of the hill. On a clear day, the view from this point is very beautiful.
To reach the seat from Gloddaeth Woods, make for an old mill house, on the hill, bear to left, around wood until the farmhouse is seen below. Then turn right as above.

Armed with the above description and the relevant OS map we set off in our quest to find My Grandmother’s Chair (MGC).  I have attempted to show all of the locations mentioned in the route description on the map below and the photos show what we found.

We were pretty confident that we had found MGC. However we then stumbled across this blog entry - http://www.threetownsforum.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,33.msg14460.html#msg14460 (http://www.threetownsforum.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,33.msg14460.html#msg14460)

This places MGC in a different location - please refer back to map. This MGC doesn’t seem to fit the route description and is made from three flat stones, two vertical and the third bridging across. To me it appears more like a neolithic burial chamber.

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

Which one is My Grandmother’s Chair, and is the alternative the remains of a neolithic burial chamber?

I believe Kate's MGC is the 'official' one; I've been to both several times, but when I was first told about it - in the '50s - the stones in Kate's blog were referred to as MGC.

Thanks very much Ian for clearing this up. I have visited the boulders on the hill a couple of times previously but this is the first time I had found the real MGC. There is a very nice area of limestone pavement just above it.
