Welcome to the Forum, Alice.  :)

The piece in the Weekly News seems to have done the trick, the record for most users online at any one time was broken again a few minutes ago:

October saw a large rise in visitors and pages viewed on the Forum. Over 2,100 people visited the Forum and the number of  pages viewed increased to 173,810 for the month, compared with 128,026 for September. If we extrapolate the pages viewed figure, that equates to over 2,000,000 page views a year.

are the 3.379 people visiting the forum  individuals -  or the same people visiting more than once? on a day off I can pop in and out of the forum many many times!
Title: Re: Forum Statistics

It is individual or 'unique' visitors... mainly guests having a browse.  But plenty of new members recently too!
I just wish we could encourage them all to post some comments.

Ha... I think I went on here more than 3379 times myself in the last month!

Title: Re: Forum Statistics

That's it, there were 3,379 'unique visitors' who, between them, made a total of 9,425 visits during the month and viewed a total of 171,776 pages.

Forums generally have many more browsers than posters.  There are a number of reasons for that, one of which is that first time visitors are often reluctant to intrude, since they may be unused to forums, and not realise that the apparent familiarity of current posting members is not exclusive , and  new members do get a warm welcome .  That's true for most decent forums...

Is that true?
Because when I joined the (old) Forum I was still only visiting Llandudno at weekends, and I was still working in Yorkshire 5 days a week.
Nevertheless, I decided to overcome my natural shyness,  kick the door down, and walk right in to this place...

I remember either Dave or yourself saying, 'help yourself to a coffee'.. that tickled me.

I was originally drawn to the forum by DaveR and his fantastic old and new photos of the local area.  It was Fester and Trojans posts that encouraged me to start actually posting as their comments were light hearted and humorous.  I promote the forum to anyone who will listen.  Its diverse and interesting topics suit all offering help and advice from gardening to computers.  Having met a few of the members in person it's no wonder this forum is so popular, some really nice members involved.  I love the forum. Dave and Ian you have done a tremendous job and I think I speak for many when I say thank you very much.  :-* :-*

I don't know how these sites work it out as their info is wildly inaccurate:

"Threetownsforum.co.uk has the estimated value of $278 and ranks # 6,618,449 in the World (Alexa). With the daily ads revenue: $1 and pageviews per day: 22. The website is hosted on server that locates in Nottingham J8 United Kingdom."

Nigel is Steve's brother.

'trago mills trojan' baffles me.....it's close to the A***mbly however.  :D

Trago Mills has served the community from its three bases in Devon and Cornwall for some forty four years, offering some three million customers per annum the greatest range of discount goods anywhere in the UK. After years of planning, Trago has recently completed a ground stabilisation project at its 120 acre site on the outskirts of Merthyr Tydfil and close to the home of the Welsh Assembly.

Unless folk are familiar with forums, the easy flow of conversation and chat can be intimidating to the newcomer although the biggest obstacle to the forum neophyte, I'm pretty sure,  is the sheer mass of previous postings.  It's why we've tried to make it as easy as possible (http://threetownsforum.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=420.0), although many don't bother reading the Welcome topics, I'm sure.

I'm sure that this Forum, like others, has the facility to send a PM to every person who has registered.  Maybe a nice chatty mail to the non-posters could encourage them to participate.

There are also other Forums that insist on Members posting at least once in (say) a month, just to keep their Membership alive.   I personally cannot see any benefit to the Forum having "readers only" unless it is just for the purpose of statistics or to swell revenue from advertising.

I have noticed a lack of posts over the past few days, and if posts are not made others cannot respond so a gradual decline in interest can result.

The Forum has 360 Members of which only 147 have posted.  94 of the 147 have posted less than 10 times.  53 have posted more than 10 times.   39 have posted more than 20 times and only 29 have posted more than 50 times.

That's a tricky one. Some people have said that it took them a long time, reading what others had posted before they felt sufficiently confident to make their first posting.

I am responding to the request for more posts. I hope I haven't bored you all to death with mine.
I am new to the forum and I am quite nervous about posting, don't know why really. It's just a bit scarey, you don't want to offend anyone or look like a know it all!
I am guilty of not reading the welcome page first, sorry! I noticed today that some people introduced themselves at the beginning. I didn't do this but Fester and Dave R know who I am because I think I was one of the first customers of the now famous "Llandudno Emporium".
I came to the forum, like many others from noticing Dave R's wonderful photos.
I haven't braved the crowds in Llandudno this weekend but would love to see some photos of all the activities down there.
"What's it like in Llandudno right now" is one of my favourites especially when there are pictures.

Nothing wrong with that, it is something we all do, but it doesn't take all that much confidence to put a short post in.  If there ain't a thread they like, they can even start a new one!    ZXZ

Anyone can read the forum, regardless of if they are a member or not, so it makes no difference to the statistics nor the vast rivers of advertising revenue. Deleting members who haven't posted yet is hardly going to encourage them to post, as they will no longer have the option to do so.

I know from conversations in town that a lot of people (shop keepers, cafe owners etc) read the forum on a regular basis but, for one reason or another, haven't posted yet. They view it as a useful facility to pick up news, opinions etc. That's fine by me.

Post numbers will inevitably be lighter when the weather is good, I've been out and about enjoying the fine weather myself lately and haven't posted that much. Plenty of time for discussions about the Pier Pavilion site when it's pouring with rain or blowing a gale!

I would have though that as most posters shield themselves behind a nom de plume and thereby have anonymity they would not find making their first comment any great problem.  However, I may just be wrong, as usual!    :P

And Member Hollins, a welcome from me too.   No comment is boring.   If someone has taken the time and trouble to post a comment then it is worth reading even if one does not personally agree, disagree or otherwise with what has been said.   More power to your pen!   ZXZ

Another problem is that I think most people are actually conditioned by society not to give their opinion, particularly if it is in any way controversial.

Wonder if that's universal? On forums, I suspect a large degree of reticence is to do with the fear of being verbally 'savaged', which - I suppose - is simply saying what you've just said in another way, Dave.

On the other hand, there are people who will give their opinion irrespective of what others may think.  They are often refered to as idiots, whiners, whingers, busy-bodies, know alls, complainers, grousers, grumblers, moaners, beefers, gripers, wailers or any other such term with a similar conotation.   Those talking of them in such a way are often those unable to accept that there should be, or could be, another viewpoint apart from their own.

Now listen very carefully for I shall say this only once :   "I always have, and always will, express my opinion or feelings as I see things.  I may never be right, or I may never be wrong, or maybe I will sometimes be right and sometimes be wrong, but what the Hell, life is too short to stuff a mushroom!"

I also consider that everybody's opinion is worth listening to, irrespective of one's own.   >>>

The vast majority of members on here are genuine, probably 90%+. I delete the obvious spammer profiles whenever I see them (the username and/or email address tends to give them away) and lots of them get blocked by the forum software when they try to join in the first place (usernames, email addresses and IP addresses are automatically checked against a spammer database on registration).

They don't join to collect email addresses, but to plug websites. There was a guy the other day who mentioned 'moviefunzone' in every message, for example. The usual way they do it is to put a website link into their profile - the idea being that Google will see the link in the profile over hundreds of different forums and boost the website's ranking in the Google search listings.

Trying to keep ahead of the spammers is a constant cat and mouse game.  :rage:

I remember that. It was Batty's Nurseries, but someone, back in the early 80's painted Nora above the sign on the slate roof of the building. It always made me chuckle everytime I ascended Penrhyn Hill.

I was just looking at Oscar Jnr's Blog and I noticed he mentioned how many visitors he got. Apparently, he/she had "Total visitors 24,989 and total pageloads 16,854" last month.

Just one thing (as Columbo almost used to say), how can you have less pages viewed than total visitors?! Surely each visitor viewed at least one page...otherwise they wouldn't be a counted as a visitor? :o

Still, 16,854 page loads isn't bad...the Forum only managed to get 240,000 in the same period...

DaveR, do you also have a record of how many different individuals posted every month?
That would be very useful to know, however, I don't believe it keeps such a record. What I can see from the Stats is that 187 out of a total current membership of 454 members have posted at least once in the last year.

Most Forums consist of a core number of Members who post regularly, together with a greater number who post occasionally. We seem to add about 30 genuine new members a month, of which the majority lately have been ladies for some reason.

There's certainly been a few 'new faces' appearing lately, and I hope that continues. Everyone is welcome to post and all opinions are welcome.

The Forum is one year old today. In its first year, it has had a total of 48,557 unique visitors and 2,866,884 page views.

If we compare the first month (Sept 2010) with the 12th month (Aug 2011), we can see how it has grown:

Sept 2010:
Unique Visitors - 1,796
Page Views - 128,026

Aug 2011:
Unique Visitors - 6,425
Page Views - 543,424

That's always been the great conundrum of any Forum. With this one, I know that many people like to sign up and be a member just so they can view the photos in the Gallery. Others, like local business owners, like to read the posts but wouldn't wish to post themselves.

Guests can view posts but can't post themselves or see the photos in the Gallery. When a member deletes themselves, their posts remain intact but it shows Guest next to their name, which can give the erroneous impression that guests can post.

As Dave says, it is a quirk of most forums, but I think that with 40% (or thereabouts) of the Membership posting one is doing very well.  It is when that percentage starts to reduce one should start worrying!  If the figures do not include Google bots and the like, then it is a very satisfying result for the first year.    :D

Let me know when and I will make sure that there is chocolate cake in the tin. At the moment there is a batch of American Scone and a batch of Crackerjack, but that will probably be mainly demolished by this afternoon's arrivals !

That's always been the great conundrum of any Forum. With this one, I know that many people like to sign up and be a member just so they can view the photos in the Gallery. Others, like local business owners, like to read the posts but wouldn't wish to post themselves.

The bit about local business owners not using the forum more has often puzzled me. I would have thought it would be an ideal opportunity to promote their business. I suppose it is the wish to stay annonymous?
When I started the thread, "room with a view" I imagined lots of hotel and apartment owners putting photos of their letting rooms. There must be some fantastic views from the 3 towns establishments.

I totally agree.

I am a local business owner and I am clrearly not anonymous.

I even had a permanent advert on the previous Llandudno forum but I have never been invited to advertise on this new forum.  :o

Bri, I don't think it is a matter of waiting for an invite...
I think Dave and Ian made it quite clear the other week that the Forum needed advertisers (and more posters) or there was a possibility it might not continue.
Mike (Ormegolf) and myself have adverts on here,  but we both approached Dave R, rather than wait for an invite.
Send Dave a PM, I'm sure he would be happy to add your business to the roster!

Too late for me, Fester, as I am now working part-time from home and starting to take on more voluntary work within our local community.

The point I was trying to make was Craig Ollerton asked for paid advertisers and the likes of me, wrex and many other local businesses supported him on his Llandudno Forum.

I am sure if DaveR and Ian were to do likewise they may be pleasantly surprised just how much financial support they will get for this forum.

It has always said on the front page of the site:

At the Three Towns Forum, we believe that independent businesses are the cornerstone of the local economy. Accordingly, we can offer local businesses the chance to advertise on the Three Towns Forum at affordable rates.

With over 250,000 pages viewed every month (and growing), the Three Towns Forum is one of the most visited local websites and offers an excellent opportunity to get your business noticed by Locals and Visitors to the area alike.

Even better, all surplus revenues from Paid Advertising will be distributed to non-profit groups in the Three Towns area. Everyone's a winner!

The Forum record for most people online at any one time has been broken again, for the second time this month:

Most Online Ever: 82 (January 26, 2012, 11:28:18 AM)

The previous record was 69, achieved on the 12th January, and before that, the record was 62, achieved back in June 2011.

Looking at the Stats, the number of unique visitors looks as though it will end up well over 8,000 this month, for comparison, last January we managed 3,379.

Anyway what's this all about? It means absolutely nothing to me.
What has happened is that someone has entered that particular phrase into Google and found their way to the Forum as a result. The Forum software keeps a record of all such things, as it is useful to know how people find out about the forum and what they are interested in.

As well as the search terms I publish on here, there are many more, including people's names quite often. It's interesting to see the same old names pop up repeatedly....  ;)

That is actually a compliment.
Have you never heard the phrase, 'that guy plays a mean guitar',  or 'my wife makes a mean sunday roast..'' etc etc...

Yes, very quiet indeed. Yesterday saw a total of 1,262 visits to the Forum (obviously one person can visit more than once) and, as you say, 7 posts.

I have to confess I've been spending more time over on the Facebook groups lately, mainly because I get a large response when I post a photo there:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/91560190640/ (https://www.facebook.com/groups/91560190640/)

So, there's lots of people viewing the Forum, just not many posting. Let's hope it picks up a bit

Yes, I see what you mean about the facebook page. There are some great old photos on there and it must be an excellent place for the locals to swop stories from past and present.

I wonder what could be done to encourage more new people to post on here? It's very strange when so many people look at it but don't write anything. Come on all you watchers, tell us about yourself or post an amusing photo or even make a complaint about something!

Is it the case that if you enter "Kelly the telly" as one example, you end up on the three towns forum?

The Google search engines trawl the site and index every page, every comment and every caption on the photographs. omitting only definite and indefinite articles; therefore, entering almost anything will eventually bring up the three towns forum, albeit in a page a long way down the list. Phrases - which comprise most of the search terms  - will have a higher chance of defaulting to the forum, since if that phrase has been used anywhere on the forum, it'll be picked up. The algorithms employed by Google are quite cunning, and weight some phrases more than others in respect of sites already indexed.

All this means that any forum has a far-above-average chance of appearing for almost every query, and it's one reason why you should always couch search terms in the most unambiguous way possible.
Title: Re: Forum Statistics
Post by: Ian on October 28, 2012, 08:21:54 am
As an example. if we enter the second phrase on the list "chris o neill forces for good" we can see that it was a news item concerned with a chap living in Colwyn Bay and about whom a copied article from the NWWN appeared in here.

No Dave - I use the same Google as you do.  My point, which you obviously missed, is that to the layman (such as Ormegolf), to get this Forum from many of the search criteria used could appear odd.   I have no problem as I try to use the best key words I can in my searches to minimise getting rubbish.  And there is plenty around.  In fact why is it that merely entering xxx in a search one picks up every sexually explicit site on the net, or a 2002 American Film?   :D

Ian explains it well.

The best way to get an accurate result in Google is to enclose the search term in speech marks if you are looking for a specific phrase etc. e.g. "David Roberts Photography", rather than just typoing David Roberts Photography.

Well---thanks everybody. Now Ive got the idea, but Im not really computer illiterate. Ive been reading comuteractive for years and years. But, Dave, in your first post you list things that people have googled in and, you state "they have put in trying to find Threetownsforum." But,obviously, the vast bulk of them, probably all of them, were not looking for TTF but brothels etc. I now realise that the forum came up way way down the list.
One last question, more to Dave himself but I am sure others know the answer. How do you know all these strange searches that end uplooking at TTF.?  Does every search that ends upon the forums plate tell you what they entered, or does something or someone give you a list, or----WHAT.
At least I now know something. A few years ago I made a blog entitled "Am I a Bank Robber?"  Just by chance I found the site was right at the very top of a Google search. If anyone keyed in "Bank robber fancy dress" my blog came up. I never knew why,I thought of even trying to sell it to some fancy dress shop. But now I know. Somewhere amongst the thousands of words I printed I mentioned going infancy dress to a Chester Motor Club annual knees up. Puzzle solved.

We get batches of site statistics through which include all that sort of thing. Most people who write blogs or run sites, etc. either install a stats package or already have one through their hosting company.

Yes, the Stats package for the Forum is very detailed, even down to showing how many people are using Windows or Mac, which browser you are using, how long people spend on average looking at posts, what time of day is busiest etc etc. As well as keeping  a  record of search terms used in Google, it also tracks other websites that link in into the Forum.

Interestingly, I just logged into the Stats package and we're on course to have the largest number of Unique Visitors ever this month; we're already up to 11,972 this month, with a couple of days left. The previous record was 11,893 back in May 2012.

good. I assume a unique visitor will get al the adverts. So my header for the golf will be seen by a lot of people. Thank goodness I've just paid my subscription before it goes up.

October saw a new record for visitors to the Forum, a total of 13,007 unique visitors, significantly beating the previous record of  11,893 from back in May.

Since the start of the year, a total of 5,793,799 Pages have been viewed and 253.59 GB of Bandwidth used.

Certainly has to be the most successful local Forum in North Wales.

Today I decided to have a browse of my Forum Statistics!   I then thought it would be interesting to have a look at other regular posters and it was quite illuminating.  As of this moment:-

One Member only needs to post another 121 to reach 10,000
Another Member has posted during every hour of the day.
One can surmise those that work as most posts are in the evenings.
Likewise one can tell those who don't as they post all day (unless it's the firm's computer, of course)

Have a look, its quite an eye opener!   :D

Sorry!  Forgot to mention that it is NOT obligatory to view either your own, or those of other Members!   However, the facility to inspect such information was included in the Forum make up, and it would be a waste of the Administrator's effort if it were not used.

It's been a little difficult to get any statistics since our stats software crumbled under the strain but, using the Forum's inbuilt Stats software, I can see there were a total of 1,014,271 pages viewed during October.

I also see that the record for people visiting the Forum has been breached again:

Controversy is the fourth studio album by Prince, released on October 14, 1981. Keith Harris of Blender calls the album "Prince's first attempt to get you to love him for his mind, not just his body" .

Go on! Call me an anorak, but I just browsed through all 24 pages of "Forum stats" and it found it all very interesting.  $thanx$
I read with a little sympathy DaveR's comments about encouraging folks to "post here" on the Three Towns Forum.  I try to do my bit by mentioning and referring folks here from the various Facebook pages, but I have to say that Folks find Facebook's software considerably easier to use than this SMF 90's style forum software.  I've been using PC's since 1981 and still find this type of software very unintuitive and "cranky" to use (and I've really persevered).  The "search" function remains a mystery to me as it does to many members (judging from the lists of search terms that have been used)  :o
As an example: I spent all morning "trawling" through what seemed like all of the 69,000 odd pages, trying to find a list of Conwy shops from late 40's, early 50's that John Thom compiled in about 2002.  I knew it was here somewhere as I saw it last year.  After failing with my search attempts, I looked at every page in "times past" to no avail.  I eventually found it in "All things Conwy".  I'm retired with loads of spare time - but many wouldn't be bothered.  I shall continue to point folks this way and learn to use the software, but thought I'd "just say".  >>> Many thanks admins, for a great forum.  $good$

Before we decided on SMF to house the forum we looked at a lot of others. I used to use IRC in the early '90s, when the internet was something most hadn't even heard of and that was a difficult way to do things. SMF has remained in vogue across the world for a number of reasons,  It's easy to use once you've been doing it for a while, it allows for precise categorisation, it's extremely flexible and it can accept plug-ins and extensions, none of which Facebook can. However, the main reason is it's far more secure than Facebook, and with Facebook's acquisition of the infamously insecure WhatsApp you can expect a lot more problems with the already leaky Facebook.

Facebook, Twitter et. al. are all commercial entities, that want to separate you from your money in as many ways as possible. We only have a few ads on here to cover hosting and we don't make a penny from it ourselves, so we have no axe to grind and can afford to allow members who reach a certain posting total to enjoy it without the ads.

You're right about the search function - sort of. There's trick to using it that isn't that well known. First off, it's pretty stupid, so don't expect the smooth correction algorithms like Google's. You do need to be very precise in spelling terms. Secondly, however, it will only search the section you're actually in at the time you invoke the search. The trick is to force the home or main page display and then enter the search parameters.

But, overall, we believe this offers a secure forum with the best mix of functionality and organisation for the cost (it's free:-).

There is always the option to search the Forum by Google itself. I've entered the term Conwy in the example below, this can be changed to any search term you desire:
https://www.google.com/search?q=conwy&sitesearch=threetownsforum.co.uk (https://www.google.com/search?q=conwy&sitesearch=threetownsforum.co.uk)

As the Forum has grown, searching has inevitably become more problematic, as the list of results obtained grows. With over 60,000 posts, there is a lot of information within this site!  :)

As a comparison to this Forums massive figures here is the monthly report for a small very specialised Blog thst I have been running for a few years.   They do not change much from month to month.

Page Load        Unique Visits   First Time Visits          Returning Visits
Total       1,795             1,497           1,271                   226
Daily Av   58           48                  41

The difference is remarkable!   :D

I'm quite happy with what I have.  It is not the sort of Blog that will ever get hundreds of pages indexed.  In fact I am sometimes surprised at the attention the Blog gets, although it does attract visitors from all over the World.   The 200 odd returning visits give me a lot of satisfaction, particularly that it is found worthy of a return visit!  Thanks anyway for the advice.

Just compiling the forum stats (about half way through generating them) but one thing which has surprised me is that just in Forum Central and the Local plus Times past .there have been eight million, seven hundred and ninety thousand,  one hundred and sixty nine views in total - 8,790,169

Seems like the word's got out.  Well done, everyone, and particularly those like Steve and Hugo who are always willing to help new members out.

Nice, Steve.  Working through it seems we've exceeded ten million page views by a fair margin.

Some interesting stats: Hugo's walking topic has an astonishing 362822 and growing, and from a pal in BBC I know the gang in Cardiff read it regularly. The Colwyn Bay topic has also had a hefty number of views: 318005 at the last count, with the Conwy topic trailing at 309574. The What's Llandudno Like Right Now? topic beats them all, with more than one and a quarter million views.

So I think it's clear we're doing a good job and the number of times we're first with a local news item is very impressive.
